Sixth East African Weekend of Remembrance 25-26 November 2022

Image courtesy Susila Anand The East African weekend of Remembrance marking the end of WWI in Africa was held over 25th & 26th November, two weeks later than Europe, in keeping with history. A memorial service with a KDF Quarter Guard, overseen by Brigadier Andrew Gituma, 2 i/c of the Kenya Navy, was held in Mwashoti, to remember the African Askaris and Carriers that died in WWI. Other services were held in Maktau for the Indian soldiers who lost their lives and in Taveta War Cemetery, to remember the fallen in the German East African Campaign. www.mcc.co.ke
A ground breaking ceremony was also held on the site of the new Indian Memorial Pillar, which will be part of the Indian “Trail of Remembrance” sites around the world, where Indian soldiers have died in action. The services were attended by representatives from eight Diplomatic Missions, as well as numerous MCC Members including organisers Tom Lawrence and James Willson, author of the ‘Guerrillas of Tsavo’.
