In the Garden with Murrell By Murrell Osborne hile the weather remains unhelpful for gardening I have written the wisdom for this month’s newsletter.

For those Glenlyon gardeners who think that the local climate offers challenges, the June rainfall figures are interesting. This June was eight times wetter than last June but still 20 percent drier than the long-term June average. Despite these fluctuations I am continuing to put manure on the vegetable beds in anticipation of spring. I intend to plant peas in early August and I hope I will be finished pruning the fruit trees by the end of this month.

Glenlyon Weather Summary — June 2018 By John Cable ainfall for June was below the long-term average with Murrell Osborne in Glenlyon recording 77mm for a yearto-date (YTD) total of 333mm, Andrew Hitchman at Diary Flat Road, 87mm for a YTD of 347.5mm and the author 77mm for a YTD of 308mm. This compares with the Daylesford long-term average of 106mm for the month but a big improvement on the 9mm recorded in June 2017.

The BoM website indicates that winter in south east Australia will be drier and warmer than average with an 85% chance of the region receiving between 100 and 200mm over the next three months. For comparison purposes the long-term average for the winter in Daylesford is 310mm. The ENSO forecast remains neutral, neither El Nino or La Nina, but the various models indicate an increased probability of reaching an El Nino threshold during spring.
