Australia Day 2019

T

he questions being asked on Australia Day 2019 are, “Should Australia Day be held on 26 January” and “Do we even need to have a day to celebrate being Australian at all?” At the Glenlyon Reserve the traditional flag-lowering ceremony was attended by a small, but dedicated group. The aboriginal flag was held alongside the Australian flag by many in the audience. Following a welcome by Bob Kennedy, Daylesford Mayor Don Henderson delivered the address on behalf of Hepburn Shire. His message was that basically Australia “works”. It is home to a people with the oldest known continuous culture and we, as relatively newcomers have come to appreciate their culture. The Mayor said that Hepburn Shire is in the process of a reconciliation program. He brought with him a message from the Dja Dja Warrung Corporation in Bendigo that they hope to be able to participate with us in the future. Cr Henderson also extended a welcome to all immigrants. He reminded the audience that last year was the centenary of the end of WW1; unfortunately the respite was brief before returning to war. “There are no winners in a war, only those who have lost less,” he said. He said another war being waged now is against disadvantage because there is a gap between those with plenty and those with barely enough. On a more positive note he thought that young people are coming through who have hope for the future. Finally Cr Henderson paid tribute to CFA, SES and Police. He suggested we think of their contribution and he thanked them on behalf of those present. Brenda Blackmore and Steven Kennedy presided over the barbeque, provided by Hepburn Shire, which was enjoyed with much appreciation while Peter Walsh and his “Beat Brother”, Steve White, entertained with well-remembered popular songs. The general opinion among those who gathered was that Australia Day should remain on 26 January as a day when we celebrate moving forward together. Judy MacLeod, from Daylesford, said we should “Stop arguing about it because it is dividing the country.” Others who also did not want to change the date, said that we should acknowledge the problems of the past, but concentrate on the future. To finish off the celebration Colin Priest assisted Bob Kennedy to lower the Australian flag and put it away for another year. Playwright Wesley Enoch, when being interviewed on the ABC’s One plus One ABC that night, summed up by saying that if we only see Australia as a young country, like adolescents seeking their identity, and not as elders in the world, we are missing out on all that knowledge. He suggested all aboriginal history be seen as Australian history.

Council Meetings at Glenlyon

By Murrell Osborne he small amount of rain at the beginning of February has, for the moment, put a halt to the “Hanrahan” mood of local gardeners.

Festival of Small Halls Concert

My hope is that the weather will improve and so I have embarked on a planting mission putting in cabbages, broccoli, cauliflowers and turnips. Against expectations I have picked a good crop of satsuma plums.

Glenlyon Weather Summary January 2019 By John Cable ot an encouraging start to the calendar year with a hot and dry January.

N

part of 2019 Festival of Small Halls, The Once and A sJohn Flanagan will be performing at Glenlyon Hall on

The Loddon river ceased flowing at Butlers Lane on or about 12 January and the dry weather was accompanied by warm to hot days and nights with a top temp of 44C recorded on Friday 25 January. In the ”rain” competition Andrew Hitchman recorded 7.5mm at Dairy Flat Road, Murrell Osborne 6.5mm at Glenlyon and the author 5mm at Butlers Lane.

The BoM predicts there is a 75% chance of receiving 50mm over the next three months. Daytime and evening temperatures are forecast to continue to be “warmer than average” following Australia’s warmest December on record.

Wednesday 3 April at 7pm. The Once, from Canada, and John Flanagan, a Melburnian, will be performing at the Port Fairy Folk Festival and we are lucky to be able to catch them on their way through to Melbourne. This is a family friendly night.

CEO Talk to GPA Postponed

King was unable to come to the GPA meeting on E van 4 February as he had to be at a community event for

the Hepburn fire. A new arrangement will be made for him to talk to our community about the future of the Glenlyon Community Plan.

Recent fires close to Hepburn and Hepburn Springs underline the high fire danger associated with the above average temperatures, extremely dry conditions and the lightning which often accompanies dry storms. Stay safe.

Ramblings from the Bramble Patch is nice to have the family care about us, but I think that I tBenjamin and Felicity were a little too solicitous during the fire at Hepburn. After the first three or four times, the regular phone calls became a little tedious. In the end we did decide to leave, not because of the fire, but simply to escape repeating our assurances that the fire was nowhere near us, and yes, we were fine. That brought us to the question of where to go. Daylesford and Ballarat were out of the question due to the amount of emergency vehicle activity in the area and the thought of facing Melbourne traffic was too daunting. So on a stinking hot day we headed north to Bendigo. Thank goodness for air-conditioned cars. We spent a relatively pleasant afternoon in the gardens and found a nice, cool, quiet place for a meal. We

returned home in time for the wind change which, had not our CFA done such an excellent job, would have been the only time we were under any threat. The experience made us think very carefully what our plans will be in future on days of high fire danger. We decided that we need to plan more than one possible destination. Had a fire flared up between us and Bendigo it could have been difficult to get home again, so there should be the option of being able to spend a night or two as well. We used to be able to stay with Benjamin and Felicity in Melbourne, but now that we don’t have family in this State the situation has become quite different. Obviously, we will have to give it a lot more thought. Time for a drink on the verandah while we discuss it.

Forest Fuel Management

T

he recent fire at Hepburn serves as a warning to all of us who live in or near the Wombat Forest. This year has been very dry; a few more of them and we will have another Black Saturday scenario in the making. Now is the time to start researching the best possible way to manage our environment and prepare our immediate locality to mitigate the risk of fire in balance with maintaining biodiversity.

plants that rely on fire to survive. They include planned burning, slashing, mowing and clearing works, creating and maintaining fuel breaks and carrying out maintenance on fire infrastructure (like fire dams and lookout towers).

Wet Weather Work at the Hall

W

hen Hepburn Shire Council undertook street and landscaping around the Glenlyon Hall, they had granitic sand laid on the south side of the Hall. Despite heavy compacting, considerable deep erosion occurred and when it rained, sand ran into and blocked the storm water drains to the point where water backed up against the Hall wall. This situation was untenable and dangerous for pedestrians, vehicles and the Hall structure. Expert advice was sought and it was recommended that the granitic sand be removed, the surface level be graded to reduce potential slippage and replaced with a grassed area. This way future access will be maintained and any heavy rain will no long run off, but will soak into the soil. A contractor was engaged who promptly carried out the work. The granitic sand was removed and the site was graded so that the level of the soil matches the edge of the concrete in front of the old fire shed. Seeding will take place as soon as the weather permits. Ironically, we are waiting for rain. The GPA Committee of Management have now received a schematic design for improving the amenity and comfort of the old fire shed to enable continuity of long standing use of the building. Beyond the call of duty, work continues in the rain as Margret clears sand from the drain.

At time of writing we are still waiting on information from Council regarding their decision about location of the public toilets.

Brigade Activities by Andrew Azzopardi he recent major fire at Elevated Plains and Hepburn proved challenging for crews and equipment to bring under control. Glenlyon Tankers 1 and 2 were called out to provide fire suppression and asset protection, alongside tankers from as far afield as Ballarat, Creswick, Taradale, Malmsbury, Tylden, Spring Hill and other local brigades. As the fire was in difficult terrain, air tankers and helicopters carried out the main attack and ground crews dealt with the fire as it emerged onto unburnt ground. Crews carried out 12 –14 hour shifts over a number of days. Thankfully cooler weather arrived and it was brought under control,

T

however the fire is still being monitored as temperatures are again expected to rise over the coming weeks. Glenlyon Brigade was also called out to a single motor vehicle accident in Tori’s Road in case a washaway of fuel was required. Earlier, a wheelie bin was discovered to be on fire in Scoble’s Road in Drummond. Quick thinking by a passing motorist, who attempted to cover the bin with dirt and called triple 000, prevented a larger incident from occurring. Glenlyon Brigade Captain, Brett Mason asks all residents to be vigilant as the weather heats up again and call triple 000 promptly if they see any sign of fire.

Hotels in Glenlyon By Geoff Palmer efore the spur railway was opened to Daylesford, freight and passengers for the Daylesford gold fields came by rail to Malmsbury and then by bullock wagon or coach, or by walking on the Malmsbury Road to Daylesford, passing through Glenlyon. There were many hotels on this road to cater for this heavy traffic of wagon drivers and passengers. Most of these hotels have disappeared but the premises of Bolton's Glenlyon Hotel is still standing as a private residence near the Shire Hall with the corner entrance to the Hotel Bar closed off.

B

Another hotel in Glenlyon was the Bridge Hotel on the other side of the Loddon River from the Upper Loddon Hotel. The General Store is still operating and this road crossing over the Loddon River now caters for modern road transport. These photos are kept and preserved by the Daylesford Historical Society.

porting Clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting that resembles the unpredictability of real-life hunting situations, with clay targets of various sizes thrown from trap machines at various angles, trajectories, elevations, speeds and distances. A course generally consists of 10 to 15 unique stations laid out over natural terrain, leading to the sport being dubbed as “golf with a shotgun”. The variation of clay target presentation is limited only to the imagination of the target setter. Sporting Clays Australia is the national independent association for sporting clays and universal trench shooting, run by a passionate group of volunteers who are experienced in the sport. It is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes the sport at all levels, creating a community of competitive and recreational clay shooters. https://sportingclaysaustralia.com.au/ January February
