The Young Creative Spirit is the Children’s Art Center residency at Glen Echo Park. Coordinated by artists/ instructors Katherine T. Andrle and Denise Dittmar, the center’s goal is to serve the community by providing art instruction to children and to broaden their appreciation of the world by giving them an outlet for creative expression. Every child has both a tremendous visual awareness of the world outside and a wonderfully imaginative inner eye. The program encourages children to trust in their own interpretations and uses a wide variety of media to expand their experience. Small classes, taught either online or in the Crystal Pool Studio, serve ages 6 through 12, and focus on the individual. Early registration is strongly encouraged. Instructors and students are required to wear masks indoors at the Crystal Pool Studio.

Working with Clay: The Basics (Ages 6-12) $150

Painting with Acrylics (Ages 8-12) $150

Create beautiful acrylic paintings, learn about different painting surfaces, kinds of brushes, mixing color and painting techniques. We will paint landscapes, still life and abstraction. Supply fee of $20 payable to instructor. More info: 301.980.1538; andrle@youngcreativespirit.org

Young artists will observe and represent the world by exploring a variety of media including drawing tools, tempera or acrylic paint, clay that will be fired, printmaking, and more. We will explore shape, form, line and design, color, landscapes, objects, people, and animals. Students will be encouraged to be imaginative, utilize stories, and find their own expression. Bring your own sketchbook or one is provided. Painting, drawing, plaster, clay, firing, and other materials are also provided. Supply fee of $30 is payable to the instructor at first class. Fine Art Drawing (Ages 7-12)

Create expressive drawings through the use of pencil and charcoal then move on to the use of color with chalk pastels. Draw different subjects each week from perception and imagination.
