As we look back over the past year, we are truly grateful for the many visitors who came to Glen Echo Park a unique place that blends the fun of family programming with the finest aspects of creativity through the visual arts and social dance We at the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture couldn’t be more pleased with all that the Park has to offer and we welcome everyone to join in these experiences
Dear Friends,
During 2019, more than 370,000 area residents and tourists participated in the Park’s diverse programs, including arts classes and camps, children’s theater performances, exhibitions, social dances, festivals, concerts, and so much more. We are thrilled with the success of new offerings, including PAGE, a parent/child program that engages preschool age youth in arts, music, and nature programs, and Words Out Loud, a free monthly spoken word series that features readings by accomplished authors followed by an open mic session. Also, we hosted our first LGBTQ Family Day in celebration of Pride Month in collaboration with Councilmember Evan Glass We extend our appreciation to Montgomery County, the State of Maryland, and the National Park Service for their support of the Park and the Partnership, especially as we began major capital repairs and preservation of our 1921 Dentzel Carousel including replacing the roof of the Carousel building, upgrading the fire detection system, renovating the band organ room, and painting the exterior of the Carousel building. All of these efforts will ensure that this historic icon will continue to delight children of all ages for generations to come. In addition, we restored the exterior of the historic Spanish Ballroom and replaced the roof of the Hall of Mirrors Dance Studio We treasure many things here our talented artists and performers, our beautiful Art Deco structures and natural setting, and our shared community values We offer our thanks to everyone who makes the Glen Echo Park experience possible Sincerely, Chris Fromboluti President, Board of Directors Katey Boerner Executive Director

Our Mission
The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Inc. manages one of the liveliest visual and performing arts sites in the Washington area. Each year, more than 370,000 people come together at Glen Echo Park to renew their creative spirit through classes, festivals, exhibitions, dances, children’s theater, music performances, nature programs, and more Established by Montgomery County in 2002, the Partnership is a nonprofit organization charged with managing Glen Echo Park’s programs and facilities. In collaboration with Montgomery County and the National Park Service, the Partnership works with resident artists and organizations to develop distinctive arts programming; operates the historic Dentzel carousel; presents an extensive social dance program; produces festivals and special events; conducts fundraising and marketing; and manages and maintains all facilities.
About the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture
With Glen Echo Park’s historic Dentzel Carousel closed early for the 2019 season, the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture offered free weekend activities to give families an opportunity to enjoy something new at the Park while the carousel building was undergoing major repairs.
On Saturdays, a chalk artist drew a unique and colorful rendering of our carousel animals under the iconic Glen Echo Park neon sign. On Sundays, a climb wall and inflatable carousel was set up on the lawn by the Park’s playground for kids to jump and play and pretend they are back on the carousel!
On two weekends in August (17 18, 24 25) and September (21 22, 28 29), kids of all ages enjoyed activities such as climbing wall, inflatable carousel, chalk artist, face painter, Saturday Art Explorers, photo ops with carousel cut outs, and a misting tent.

MajorCarouselRepairsBegin
The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture closed the Park’s historic Dentzel Carousel early in the year in order for the building that houses the carousel to undergo major maintenance and repairs. For the 2019 season, it opened with Carousel Day on April 27 and closed on June 30. The work took approximately 6 9 months. The carousel was scheduled to open again in Spring 2020. These much needed repairs will keep the carousel safely protected for many years to come Major repairs included replacing the roof of the carousel building, replacing the outdated fire suppression system, and rebuilding the band organ room, which houses the Wurlitzer band organ. The work was done in two phases In the first phase, the roof was replaced The new carousel building roof was replaced with the same painted design that is a prominent feature of the current roof. The carousel building exterior also received a new coat of paint in the existing color scheme. Although a full restoration of the decorative elements of the carousel was concluded in the early 2000s in addition to a $23 million renovation of other Glen Echo Park facilities in the mid 2000s the carousel roof was not in need of full replacement at that time.
The total cost of the project is $1.059 million, with contributions from the National Park Service, which owns the property and buildings at Glen Echo Park, the Montgomery County Arts Council (through a Capital Improvement Grant) and the State of Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.
The work had to be completed during fair weather to ensure appropriate temperatures for the roofing materials to be applied. In phase two of the project, the fire suppression system inside the carousel building was upgraded with a new sprinkler and fire alarm system. The band organ room was also renovated to better protect the historic 1926 Wurlitzer 165 Band Organ.

Shop Arts Saturday The Partnership continued to expand our newest holiday event, Shop Arts Saturday, with resident artists demonstrating their creative talents and visitors able to try their hands at a few art techniques as well. A reception area with free hot cider and music provided by the Washington Conservatory made the shopping experience festive and relaxing. Fine arts and craft sales included glass, pottery, photography, jewelry, painting and drawing, in addition to a variety of works in our annual Holiday Art Show & Sale. This event was a celebration of Small Business Saturday on November 30.
The Partnership showcased the dance program with six dances each with a different band and dance style On September 21, Soul Crackers visited the Spanish Ballroom to put on a "soul dance party" with tons of Blues music. There was a special sitting area for visitors who wanted to listen to the music while enjoying refreshments. Bad Influence visited the Ballroom on October 19 to perform Blues music for dancers On November 23, we hosted the Cathy Ponton King Band where dancers got to enjoy blues and swing music. Music Unlimited Big Band came to the Park on March 30 to perform swing music for both dancers and listeners. During this dance, there was a section set off for people to watch dancers and listen to the band. On April 13, we partnered with Gottaswing who taught the dance lesson before Hot Club Baltimore started their set. The last dance we presented was on June 7 which was presented in conjunction with American Swing & Dance. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy performed swing music for all the dancers
