Dear Glendale Members and Staff,

I want to take a moment this month to recognize Mike Montgomery and his incredible team. Whether it's running our tournaments, coaching us to improve our games, managing the pro shop, or keeping the bag room and carts in top shape, everything they do is focused on creating a great experience at Glendale. We deeply appreciate their thank you, Mike and team!

Dining Room and Patio Remodel

As you read this, the dining room and patio remodel should be substantially complete just in time for the Men’s Invitational. The project was completed in record time and delivers a beautiful indoor-outdoor space we can enjoy year-round. In next month’s newsletter, I’ll highlight the many members and staff who worked together to bring this vision to life. I hope you enjoy the upgraded areas!

Golf Course Project Update

We’ve launched a new section on our member website where you can find all the latest updates, videos, and key information about the golf course project.

If you haven’t already, be sure to watch the excellent overview video by Clint, Steve, and Mike. It explains how this project is both a restoration and renovation rebuilding greens, bunkers, and tees, improving drainage, and making enhancements that will elevate playability and golfing experience for years to come.

This effort is aligned with the irrigation project, which will be primarily funded by the upcoming land sale expected to close in Q1 2026. By combining the two efforts, we reduce disruption and save costs. We plan to begin construction in September 2027, with completion expected by May 2028.

Much of the work will take place during winter months when play is typically lighter. The course will remain open throughout construction, though hole availability will vary from 15, to 12, to 9 holes at different times. Where needed, temporary greens (well prepared and maintained!) and tee boxes will be available to ensure course access with a good playing experience.

We currently estimate the total project cost at $6–7 million. Members will likely have two payment options:

• one-time assessment of approximately $15,000–$16,000, or

• monthly payment of $150–$165 over 10 years

Members choosing the monthly option will only pay while they remain at Glendale. If someone leaves, for example, after 2, 3, or 5 years, payments stop, and new members pick up the remainder of the term.

Please note: These figures are preliminary and will be refined as plans are finalized, but they offer a good directional sense of what to expect.

Look for more videos and updates in the coming weeks. We also plan to host an open house information session in August once the final plans are ready.

As always, feel free to reach out with any questions. Glendale is a special place, and I’ m grateful we get to enjoy it together. Let’s continue to make the most of it and each other.

Warm regards,

President

Dear Glendale,

In this month’s column I wanted to talk about a very common issue I see on and around the greens that I think could be improved and implemented with just a bit more attention for some great gain. It has to do with practice strokes. Most golfers make practice strokes on and around the green before they play their shot, however these practice strokes most often don’t reflect the stroke needed for the shot they are about to play. They are often way too big, or way too short.

Make Your Practice Stroke a “Preview Stroke”

The purpose of a practice stroke is to get you prepared to execute the shot in front of you to the best of your ability. Most golfers though are quite careless when they make these strokes so they are often not even close to what is needed for the shot. They are practicing the wrong stroke, and this is going to make it harder to execute the correct stroke when you step up to the ball to play your shot. Instead, treat these practice strokes as “preview strokes” and try to make them as real and reflective as possible for the shot you are facing.

During lessons I have students make their preview strokes and I ask them to imagine if the ball got in the way of this stroke, would it be long, short or just right? Through this simple exercise they realize pretty quickly how their practice strokes aren’t reflective of what they actually need. So we try again, and I ask them to visualize and imagine the ball coming off the face as they make their preview stroke and following in real time with their eyes the ball rolling towards the hole, slowing down and going in. Soon they start to connect the preview stroke for the actual stroke needed, and this lets them better replicate the stroke for the actual putt to hit the shot they want. The mental imagery of seeing the ball trail off the face and in the hole is a very powerful and positive feeling right before you play your shot. It certainly beats not imagining the ball going into the hole, or thinking about what would happen if you missed it!

Next time you are practicing or playing just pay attention to your practice strokes a bit more. Instead of 2, 3 or more careless practice strokes practicing the wrong putt, try to make 1 or 2 preview strokes as real and reflective as possible for the shot you are about to face.

I am excited to again host former PGA Tour player Richard Lee for an all day comprehensive golf school later this month. After playing on tour, now Richard currently coaches several tour players as well as club level golfers in Arizona. This is a great opportunity to get your full game dialed in and play some holes with one of the top coaches in the country!
