PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

HERE’S TO A GREAT SEASON!

s I put pen to paper for this article in late April, the weather is gorgeous (+20) today, but will change rapidly (-1) with snow tomorrow. Our weather volatility is similar to our COVID situation, with highs and lows of cases, hospitalizations, vaccinations and COVID variants creating uncertainty in the population about how to react and protect ourselves, our families and friends. The result of these uncertainties impacts our Golf Club tremendously. We find ourselves in a situation very similar to what we experienced last spring, with high demand for tee times, and a need to comply with AHS restrictions impacting our tee times, our food and beverage service, and visits to the Clubhouse. All of these matters are issues which management, your Golf Committees and Directors have been addressing as we open on a limited basis and move towards opening all 45 holes. Your patience and understanding are much appreciated.

The golf courses and the Clubhouse services will not be directly impacted by the commencement of renovations and will remain open until our usual closing dates. The renovations will ensure The Glencoe Golf & Country Club continues to be a premier club, providing a first-class experience to its members. We continue to attract new members who are looking for a full golf and social experience. Our Trial Membership Program has been renewed this year and has attracted new downtown Glencoe members who want to experience our golf membership before joining the Golf Club. In previous years, a significant number of these have converted to full club memberships. We look forward to welcoming these trial members this season.

We anticipate a very busy, but very fulfilling golf season and to that end, there is much good news to pass on.

We are also very proud to be again hosting our premier golf event, the Digital Commerce Bank Glencoe Invitational on June 17 – 19 and celebrating its 25th anniversary. We are carefully watching all COVID restrictions and modifying the tournament as needed.

First and foremost, the golf courses wintered well, the Practice Facilities and Clubhouse are open, the Pro Shop is well stocked with new equipment and clothing, our Food & Beverage is open for outdoor dining, and members are using each of these services every day.

This event will include a 54-player field made up two divisions, one of 30 men (amateurs) and the other of 24 women (12 amateurs and 12 professionals). Thanks to Dale Goehring and his Committee who are working hard to ensure another successful Invitational.

Our Kitchen renovations are complete, on time and under budget, and Jordan, our Executive Chef, and his team are creating delicious culinary experiences for all of us. Be sure to treat yourself and your family to a delightful dining experience at the Clubhouse on the patio for now and inside when restrictions are lifted.

As our courses open and we move towards our full complement of 45 holes, we ask that you be aware of, and comply with, all COVID restrictions, that you be patient regarding tee time availability and access, and most importantly that you stay safe and care for yourself and others.

A

s I write this article the practice range is open for bookings, the turf team is working around the clock, the snow is melting fast on most parts of the property and spring feels like it has arrived. I would like to welcome all our members “back home” for the season as well as the returning seasonal staff. It has been a long winter (even with the outstanding winter activities at the Club) and to get back teeing the ball feels even better than most previous starts to a season.

With such a trying past year, having golf back as a place to connect is a welcome escape. I appreciate everyone has had their own COVID journey since March 2020. While everyone has experienced and approached the pandemic in different ways, we can all come home to The Glencoe Golf & Country Club and feel united and welcomed.

Your staff team is dedicated to making this season the most memorable one yet, with exceptional golf, amazing food and an environment that exceeds your expectations. While the Club cannot forecast all aspects of health orders, restrictions or Mother Nature, what the team can forecast is the dedication to exceptional experiences. Speaking of restrictions and mandates, we will always adhere to AHS and the government guidelines, but the Club will try to do so with the absolute minimum impact to the membership. I look forward to reconnecting with the membership in what will likely be a very busy and hopefully extremely successful 2021 season.

WELCOME TO THE 2021 GOLF SEASON!

I

hope the winter season was a good one for you and your family. As I write this note, its wonderful to have some spring-like weather and with the warmer weather temperatures over the last few weeks and a good forecast ahead, it is anticipated that the golf season will start sooner than later. After a long winter and everyone bundled up indoors, we anticipate members will be itching to get outside and play golf. We all had hoped that by this time COVID would be behind us and we would see very few restrictions in place. Unfortunately, that is not the current reality. COVID is still very much here, and restrictions are being lifted very slowly, much less than what we had wished for. Please join me in thanking our health care workers for their selfless, heroic efforts in keeping us and our loved ones safe. Providing the best possible service to our club members and their families is always at the heart of everything we do. We have been working diligently this winter reviewing 2021 operations and figuring out ways to improve our member experience. The current COVID-19 situation does have a bearing on our member service delivery mechanisms, which is both an opportunity and a challenge for our team. Our team is ready and looking forward to giving you exceptional experience and making our club feel like your second home.

COVID-19 has changed the way our members are using the Club. Golf as a sport is seeing a resurgence due to COVID implications to all our lifestyles. As a team, we have a collective responsibility toward varying degrees of member expectations, and member engagement which changes with each membership category. We all just need to be very thoughtful, patient, and understanding of every member need and wants as we collectively navigate through these unique times. A little empathy and kindness in times like these goes a long way! Similar to last year, we will continue using a multi-phased and controlled approach, which will ensure the greatest success with the ever-changing regulations and restrictions. There are many variables and unknowns at this time, but we will continue to listen, evaluate, and are committed to being flexible. In conjunction with the various Member Committees, we are looking forward to having an exciting year of golf and social activities. Please take the time to look at not only this edition of The Flag magazine which has been completely remodeled, but also the various emails we put out regularly, so you can stay on top of what is happening at your Club. In conclusion, I hope to see you at the Club and hope you will take the time to let me know how we are doing. Your continued feedback is critical to me so that adjustments to operations can be made quickly and with minimal impact to your experience.

s we return to the 2021 golf season, I’m excited to welcome everyone back! I’d like to take a moment to encourage everyone to get involved in an event that they have not previously participated in. Whether that is trying out Match Play, joining a league or testing your relationship in the Mr. & Mrs., the Club holds a variety of events that fit every skill and social level! If you’ve never participated in any of our programming, our committee members are a great resource to suss out what might be best for you. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team of volunteers who work very hard at ensuring our programming fits all of our members. If you’re more of a “I’ll figure it out myself” type, jump online and head to the programming section of the website to check out the opportunities that await! My last plug will be on getting involved with our committees. If you’re one who has been thinking about it over the years (or months as you’ve been cooped up at home), someone who has great ideas to help jazz up an event, or you’ve found that you have some spare time and want to give back – wait no longer! Get in touch with our committee chairs, Judy, Ash or myself and we will make sure to add you to the list as we form committees in the future. We love new ideas and look forward to continuing to enhance the programming at the Club.

WELCOME TO THE 2021 GOLF SEASON!

I

t’s been a long winter and I’m excited for this season as golf continues to be one of the activities we can enjoy with friends and family during the pandemic. It helps take our mind off the daily stresses going on around us.

Our goal as a Committee is to be an advisory group that works with management and the Turfcare team to provide the best possible conditions on the property. We have an eclectic group of members on this year’s Committee, and I feel we will be able to provide the membership with a reliable link with management to provide information while being open to members’ comments, concerns and general feedback on the overall course conditions. The main way to stay up to date on current course conditions is through the weekly course updates from Brock and his team in the weekly emails and the Club News blog at glencoegolf.org. Mother Nature continues to behave like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the property does still have snow on the north facing and shady areas but progress is being made. Overall, the property wintered nicely despite heavy usage from many members participating in the winter activities. The bentgrass greens are in superb condition with tee and fairways throughout the property showing minimal winter damage. Rodent damage was observed in isolated areas on the Meadows including the greens (a very rare occurrence but also being observed at other courses in the city as well). Brock and his Turfcare team are focusing on getting these areas back to normal as soon as possible.

Last year’s fall projects were impacted by weather limiting the construction window causing the fall/spring projects to bleed into the start of the season, but are scheduled to be completed prior to the prime playing months. Some projects to note are improved drainage on Lakes 1; tree stump removal and landscaping on Lakes 2 and 3 and Forest 1, 2, 7, 8, and 11; brush clean-up of marshy areas on Bridges 1 and 4; bunker rejuvenation on Lakes 2 and 8; improved drainage on Slopes 1 and 2 including the entrance road; and irrigation at the Practice Facility. In order to minimize impact to member tee access and opening dates, the Turfcare team intends to use modified tees (Lakes 1) if needed, along with Ground Under Repair areas and limited closures in the certain areas of the hole where work is being performed. We anticipate this season to see strong demand like last year, which is great for the Club and the sport in general, but with the added demand comes added foot traffic and just greater wear and tear on the property. That being said, we encourage all members to do their part in taking care of the property so that it can remain in the pristine form that we have all come to expect and appreciate. Not only does this help the course, it provides relief to the Turfcare team so they can focus time on the more detailed work around the property. We look forward to a successful 2021 season working closely with management and the Turfcare team and encourage feedback from the membership in order to provide the best experience possible. COMMITTEES: WHO, WHAT & WHY? Looking forward to the season! Emily Gauthier, Golf Committee Chair

A

nd, we’re back! Here we are again, living in a world of uncertainty amongst (hopefully) the final grips of COVID-19 that most of us hoped would be in the rearview mirror by now. As we look to the spring and summer months, there is one certainty we can count on — and that is that our beloved home away from home, The Glencoe Golf & Country Club, will do everything in its power to ensure that we have another great year, despite the challenges we may face. First, on behalf of both the membership and management, I would like to express our appreciation to Rob Heaton for his hard work and dedication as Golf Committee Chair over the past two seasons. Rob’s enthusiasm and attention to detail, especially as we navigated ‘the Vid’ last year is to be commended. Thank you, Rob, and congratulations on a job well done. I am honoured to have been asked to be the Chair of the 2021 Golf Committee and I am excited to be working with a very dedicated and knowledgeable group of volunteers who are all working very hard on their respective programs and events to make the coming season the very best it can be amidst the barriers that may be present. As an introduction to the season, I would like to highlight the importance of our committees, how they come to be, and the work that they do (almost year-round) to enhance our experience at the Club.

First, committees are selected at the end of the preceding calendar year. The Chairs/Captains of each committee are appointed by the Golf Club President, Golf Committee Chair, and the General Manager. Once the Chairs are in place, they work with the Golf Chair and management to select committee members from the membership at large who put forward their names as volunteers. Secondly, the role of our committee members is three-fold, 1) to act as a conduit and communication liaison between the membership, management, and the Board as to the pulse of the membership, 2) to work together with management and the Directors in making recommendations to the Board concerning areas such as, but not limited to, the state of the golf course and the facilities, annual operating and capital budget and privileged membership applications, and 3) to work in cooperation with management in several areas including, but not limited to, building participation and promoting the development of golf, support programming to meet the varying needs of the membership, interacting with outside organizations with the Golf Club in mind, and ensuring the Club operates to serve the best interests of the majority of the membership. I would like to extend a thank you to all members who have served on our committees over the years. The work that has been done and the time that has been contributed does not go unnoticed.

W

e are looking forward to what the golf season has in store for us. As always there is a full calendar of Ladies events that can be found on the website with sign up options as posted. Our Opening Par-Tee was a great success and included a ‘how to make’ signature cocktail, fashion show, and draw prizes. All the Ladies leagues focus on social connections through various golf games. Those with a more competitive focus can look towards match play. Two new initiatives coming up this season include Chippin’ Chickens and a Round Robin as an introduction to match play. Ladies are welcome to indicate their willingness to become involved in assisting the organization of various events such as the Glen Derby, please contact either Shannon or myself. Although we have all been educated about the many birds we have living on our beautiful sanctuary, we know that the Golfer’s favourite bird is the Birdie! Let’s have a great season.

T

he Men’s Committee is very excited for another year of golf and although things might look similar to the 2020 season with regards to COVID protocols, we are eager to build on the successes we enjoyed with last year’s events. This year’s first event is the Captain’s Dinner on May 18, followed by Burn Your Bridges on May 29, Stampede Stableford on July 10, Member/Guest on July 29, and Club Championships August 20-23. Individual and 4-Ball Match Play (both Handicap and No Handicap) will commence in May as well as the weekly Men’s Night which starts on May 4. Similar to last year, Men’s Night bookings will be available online each Wednesday prior to the next Tuesday’s Men’s Night. Registration is now open for all events! Be sure to go online and check out the full event schedule along with their corresponding dates so you can plan your season and register early. We are anticipating similar demand to last year with most events filling up quickly and eventually selling out, so we are advising members to register as early as possible. Here’s to a great season!

I

am thrilled to be the current Chair of the Junior Committee. This is my third year sitting on the Committee and first as Chair. I am pleased to welcome back Erin Murphy and Barbara Joy as returning committee Members and welcome Chris Cameron and Greg Thomas as new Committee Members this year. I am also very excited to welcome back Georgina Barr as the Junior Girls Captain and Carter Code as the Junior Boys Captain. After a long winter we are all excited to return to our course! We still face some uncertainty coming into this new season for full programs and events, but are leveraging last years’ experience. This Committee has been working hard with management to make sure our Junior Programs are scheduled and delivered under as close to normal conditions as possible. We are also working through the various scenarios in hopes that we can run the golf components of tournaments even if regulations prohibit the banquet portions of events. We are hoping for a great golf season ahead for all our Juniors!

WELCOME BACK MEMBERS!

I

t is crazy to think about the season already being back in full swing, I feel as if the winter months have flown by! I hope you were able to enjoy our winter activities this season thanks to the incredible job our Turfcare team accomplished with the groomed ski trails, dog walking path, snowshoe trails and gorgeous skating rinks! We even had Professional Figure Skater Eladj Balde (below) grace us with his presence and make many of his ‘viral’ videos from our

skating rinks to showcase to the world just how lucky our members are! Now as the season gets underway and we start to open the course slowly, we are still keeping many of our opening practices from last season when COVID protocols were at an all-time high. It seems we are somewhat in the same position as April 2020, but more aware of what the season can look like going through this pandemic. Thank you, members, for supporting these protocols and moving forward with a positive mindset and confidence in the season ahead. It will be a good one! We saw a very positive 2020 season in membership sales last year, as well as a successful Trial Membership with a conversion rate of 62 percent. We are continuing to see growth and welcoming new members to the Club for the 2021 season and beyond. After touring and getting to know new members who have never been to the course before, the most exciting things they are looking forward to this season is getting to know fellow members, playing all 45 holes, the upcoming Clubhouse Renovation and fully experiencing the programs, leagues, and events available to them.

WINTER WRAP UP Thank you to all of our members for a wonderful winter season at the golf course! Skating opened on December 18 with two rinks, one on Bridges and one on Meadows, as well as a beautiful 0.5 km track. With the tremendous snowfall just before Christmas, our Turfcare team were able to prep the trails and open snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on December 23. From that point forward, it was a winter wonderland! From avid skiers to those 10 glencoegolf.org

learning how to skate to family dog walks on Bridges, we were happy to see so many members take full advantage of these fun outdoor activities. The Spike Lounge was open on Sundays (when permitted), so members could come in, warm up and relax with a drink at the bar or hot chocolate by the cozy fire. Thank you for supporting and following the COVID protocols and restrictions that were in place. It was a different season for all, but together we made the best of it!

Payment plan options now are an entrance fee total of $25,000 if paid off by age 36 or $30,000 if paid off by age 40 with a minimum annual payment of $500. From the ages of 25-35 any Associate member can also have the flexibility to lock into a payment plan to add a Spouse or Children to their membership. CLUBHOUSE RENOVATION Building on our past to celebrate our future

The grand opening of our Clubhouse was on June 28, 1986 and over the last 35 years it has served us well. Each season brings new and exciting accomplishments, events and special occasions, and we all look forward to coming back to the Clubhouse after a day on the course or to gather with family and friends for a delightful meal. Between these walls many friendships and memories have been made. From raising a toast to golf victories to celebrating life milestones and everything in between, our Clubhouse has been the central hub for members and guests to come together to eat, drink and celebrate. 12 glencoegolf.org

s with all good things, there comes a time when we need to rebuild, reinvent, restructure or revamp. The needs and wants of the membership change and the Club must always adapt to improve and enhance when we can. With your newly renovated Clubhouse coming in Spring 2022, we are not looking to leave our valued past behind, but rather propel our Club forward into the future. Enhance the members’ second home so we can continue to provide exceptional experiences for many years to come. With 90 percent of members spending 90 percent of their time in the Clubhouse in our dining facilities and the Golf Shop, this renovation focuses on these areas. Members can look forward to a whole new west side of the Clubhouse with a welcoming and modern look and décor, an expansive new outdoor dining space, additional services, and improved function and flow.

KICKING OFF WITH A

NEW KITCHEN A s I write this article, the golf clubs are at the ready for the first practice tee time of the season. Although it feels like we are back to where we were at the beginning of last golf season with respect to pandemic rules and uncertainty, I can assure you that there has been a flurry of activity over the winter at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. As Chair of the Construction Committee overseeing the building of our new kitchen, I am happy to report that the stunning new kitchen is complete, on time and under budget, and is ready to allow our very talented staff to provide you with exemplary service over the seasons to come.

The genesis of this project stems from the initial plans to renovate the Clubhouse and the member feedback received after a number of the open houses regarding the clear need for an update to our kitchen facilities. Those who toured the old kitchen can attest to our amazement as to what the staff could produce on a busy day despite the layout and condition of the very old infrastructure. Hence the decision to go ahead with the renovation was made last spring with the commencement of demolition last fall. Demolition in an older building always uncovers a number of surprises including the discovery of a large water tank to the south of the main entrance. This was not on any of

the plans, nor in anyone’s institutional memory; however, there it was! The many challenges that the renovation of the old space brought were dealt with ingenuity of the project team with a close eye on cost control under the strong management of Ash Chadha, Jan Bloemraad and our project manager Dave Skaret of TPM. With the approval of the remaining Clubhouse renovations having been made now, we believe that the timing of doing the kitchen first has been helpful in planning the second phase. Many secrets of the Clubhouse have now been revealed and can be planned for at the outset.

I would like to thank the members of the Construction Committee for their valuable input. I know we all learned a lot about the intricacies of building an industrial kitchen and now have some envy of the great new equipment that has been installed. It is big, bright and efficient. Quite the transformation!

The brightly lit, new kitchen is designed to improve efficiencies, organization, flow, and infrastructure, therefore providing an enhanced dining experience for our restaurant and event guests. • Centralized coolers, freezers and dry storage space allowing for improved efficiencies when preparing meals as all ingredients are close by and prepared items can quickly be stored. • Separate banquet and bulk production line giving our cooks a designated area to prep throughout day and execute large events without interrupting our restaurant operations. • Easy access to banquet rooms and dining outlets for improved flow of frontline staff from the kitchen to your table. • Two new Rational Icombi Pro ovens allows us to cook proteins, vegetables and other foods all at the same time while ensuring consistent and evenly cooked items. • New pasta cooker allows for bulk blanching of pastas and frees up valuable burners on the oven range. • A banquet serving table with heating wells and heat lamps to streamline plate service and ensure food stays hot and fresh. • Open areas for better communication between kitchen staff as well as front and back of house teams. • Built for ease of cleaning with equipment on castors so they can be easily moved along with seamless floors and smooth paneled walls that won’t trap dirt or grease.

EVENT PLANNING As I write this, we are in the midst of another significant lockdown in Calgary and throughout Alberta. The current situation makes it difficult to plan events decisively, especially for the near future. Social gatherings are not allowed. But in the world of event planning, we’re used to looking three, six, nine and sometimes more than 12 months out.

T

he uncertainties of 2020 undoubtedly made it difficult to adopt a futureoriented mindset, but as 2021 continues, there is a sense of optimism that this year will bring more opportunities to host events, connect with others and celebrate. While this sense of optimism grows, event hosts must keep their planning — and client expectations — realistic, modifying event programming as we go. So, what does planning an event in this COVID-19 world actually look like?

Opting for Outdoor Spaces COVID-19 has pushed venues to rethink the way they offer event spaces, specifically placing more emphasis on the use of the outdoors. A simple patio or patch of grass can be transformed into a beautiful space for an outdoor cocktail reception, awards presentation or dance party. Considerations: • Some coverage from the elements is recommended. Think about strategically placing umbrellas, installing tents and using roof

overhangs to your advantage. • Consider adjusting the event timing to take advantage of lighter morning winds and the warmest part of the day. Pro Tip: Sunset can be the perfect signal that the event is concluding. • It is important to inform your guests in advance that the event will be held outdoors. Instruct your guests to dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for the elements. Event hosts can consider having small hand warmer pads, blankets, and/or umbrellas available for their guests.

Adjusting Food & Beverage Offerings Self-service food and beverages likely will not be a viable option for a while. Instead, it is necessary to limit common touch points. This can be achieved through strategic menu design and service. Considerations: • Plated dining is an alternative to buffets if you are hoping to plan a more formal event that centers around a meal. Keep in mind that some venues could charge more for a plated meal as it requires additional trained staff members. You will not find such extra charges applied at the Golf Club. • Instead of traditional passed or stationed hors d’oeuvres for a cocktail reception, individually portioned hors d’oeuvres can be plated live by chefs. Not only is this a safer option, it is also an impressive service experience for your guests. • If you are hosting an event outdoors, consider hiring a food truck where guests can order their food or offer a simple BBQ-style menu that can be cooked and plated live by a chef.

• Perhaps the safest option: Consider whether a pre-made, boxed meal is appropriate for your event. Boxes can be placed in various locations or placed directly on each guest’s seat. This is most appropriate for meetings or events that are less formal. • If buffet dining is what you are interested in, some venues can offer a modified buffet in which partitions are used to separate guests from staff. Trained chefs will dish out the food instead of it being self-service. This is an offering that we have added for 2021 at the Golf Club.

Considerations: • The physical setup of a room signals a lot about the event. It is not just about distancing; thinking strategically about how guests will flow through and move throughout the room is important, too. Where is signage required? Do guests have a safe path to the washrooms? Are there secluded seating options for someone who desires more distance? This is something the venue should be able to offer guidance about, but it is also recommended that you physically walk through the space in advance. • While we continue to limit in-person attendance, consider offering a way that people can join you from the comforts of their own home through a live stream. Or hire a professional photographer or videographer and make their album available after the event. Many photographers and videographers can even offer a same day edit version of their work, if requested. • Communication before and after the event is key. Set expectations for all attendees and clearly communicate said expectations in advance (for example, “All guests are asked to remain masked

2021 DRAFT BEER LINEUP by Courtney Tanaka, Banquet & Events Manager

This season, after several years of transitioning away from mass produced beers, we made the final leap towards offering exclusively local-brewed, craft beers on tap.

T

his decision was made for many reasons, but our two main considerations were: a) the Alberta economy has been hit hard by the pandemic so we want to do what we can to support local; b) the Alberta craft beer scene has drastically changed over the past few years – now offering many lighter, more approachable styles. According to an article published by Avenue Magazine, “Alberta’s first brewery was, confusingly, the Saskatchewan Brewery in Medicine Hat located in the region that was then the Northwest Territories. It was founded in 1882 by Englishman Thomas Ireland. The brewery only lasted five years and closed in 1887 eight years before Alberta became a province in 1905.” (5 Things You Didn’t Know About Alberta’s Beer History by Andrew Guilbert, published April 4, 2016, Avenue Magazine Calgary). Since that colourful start, Alberta’s local beer industry slowly but surely carved out a niche until the early 2000s when it EXPLODED! By 2015, Alberta had just 20 craft breweries that offered a diverse portfolio of styles featuring locally grown ingredients. Now, in 2021, there are over 150! This exponential growth has brought numerous changes to the industry; in particular, a notable shift from really unique, aggressively hop-forward beer styles to more subtle, balanced, and classic beer styles. Here are the wonderful craft breweries, and their delicious beers, that we have selected for the 2021 season!

Banff Ave Brewing Co. Banff Ave Brewing Co. opened in 2010 and was the second brewery to open in a Canadian National Park. This season we will be offering the Banff Ave White Wit on tap. This is their take on a classic Belgian white wheat ale. This delightfully refreshing ale is spiced with orange and coriander. The crisp citrus notes are well balanced with its slight spiciness. If you are a fan of a refreshing wheat ale with a slice of orange, this one is right up your alley!

This season we will be offering the Cabin Brewing Sunshine Rain IPA on tap. This award-winning beer is their refined take on a classic northwest American IPA. We will also be offering the Cabin Brewing Super Saturation New England Pale on-course, which is one of the top selling craft beers in the province.

Blindman Brewing

Cold Garden Beverage Company

Located in Lacombe, Alberta, Blindman Brewing is right next door to where they grow and malt their amazing barley. This season we will be offering the Blindman River Session Ale on tap. This late hopped session ale features notes of citrus and tropical fruit. The category of ‘session ale’ is growing in popularity as people gravitate towards beers with a lower alcohol content. (To be classified a session ale, the beer must have an alcoholic content below 5%). The Blindman River Session ale is a delightfully crushable beer at 4.4% ABV but is by no means light in flavour.

Cold Garden is another favourite Calgarybased microbrewery that offers an eclectic taproom and dog-friendly patio. This season we will be bringing back the Cold Garden Dandelion’s Blonde. This quintessentially light-bodied beer has subtle touches of citrus, fruit, and malt sweetness. The Cold Garden Dandelion’s Blonde is designed as a craft option for people who just want something simple and easy to drink.

Cabin Brewing Company Cabin Brewing may be a name you have heard more recently. Cabin is a Calgary brewery that offers a family-friendly

Inner City Brewing Fahr Beer Fahr Beer is on a mission to brew proper, traditional German beers right here in Alberta. Fahr’s lineup of core beers have won numerous Canadian and International Beer Awards. This season we will be offering the Fahr Pilsner on tap. This award-winning Black Forrest style pilsner is unique to North America. It is fuller-bodied with less hop and bitterness than many other pilsners brewed in Canada. This beer is filtered for clarity and has the perfect crisp finish making it super easy to drink. We will

Inner City Brewing is another local Calgary gem that offers a vibrant taproom experience. This season we will be offering the Inner City Heart of the City Lager on tap. Inspired by Pullach, Germany, this authentic Bavarian-style lager is malt forward with just enough hops to support the unique flavours that come from the German malts. The light honey, hints of graham cracker and very subtle spice make this beer incredibly easy drinking.

Rocky View Brewing Company Rocky View Brewing Company is a microbrewery that is only a pitching wedge away from the Golf Club, located just outside of Cochrane. Starting as a home brewing hobby, the facility has more recently expanded into a fully operational brewery located on an acreage. This season we will be offering the Rocky View Amber on tap. This tasty amber ale has a medium malty flavour with caramel and chocolate tones which balance the hoppy bitterness. English-style hops are used to create a well-balanced, easy drinking UKstyle ale that is sure to please!

We will also be offering the Inner City Hub & Spoke Vienna Lager on-course which is a classic amber lager with rich, yet soft malt characteristics.

CARROT-GINGER VINAIGRETTE 1 cup 2 tbsp 2 tbsp 2 tbsp 2 tbsp 2 tbsp ½ cup 1 tsp ½ cup

finely shredded carrot lime juice ginger, peeled and finely chopped honey shallot, finely chopped soy sauce seasoned rice vinegar sesame oil canola oil

STEP 1: Blend the first 8 ingredients together for 1-2 minutes, until well blended and the carrot has been pureed. STEP 2: While blending on a slow setting, slowly drizzle in the canola oil until completely added and the dressing has thickened. *This dressing will last 7-9 days in a refrigerator and yields 1 L.

HALLOUMI CHOPPED SALAD

T

his year we’ve introduced a vegetarian salad on the menu which features Halloumi cheese as an alternative to common proteins like chicken breast, salmon or steak. Halloumi is a semi-hard cheese which originates from Egypt. The robust texture lends itself to cooking methods like grilling or searing for additional caramelized flavour. The beauty of this salad is that you can be creative and replace the vegetables from the original recipe with almost any vegetable that’s on hand. The halloumi and the dressing are the keys to this recipe so feel free to experiment and make it your own. All you need is the lettuce of your choice (we use romaine), and a colourful assortment of hearty vegetables. We use broccoli, red pepper, edamame, red onion and shredded cabbage, then top with sunflower seeds for some crunch.

yields 4 portions: Halloumi 12 oz sliced into 4 thin, even pieces (3oz/ea) 2 heads romaine cut into 1” pieces and washed 1 head broccoli cut into small florets (the stem can also be used if peeled and sliced thinly) 1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced into thin strips 1 cup thawed and shelled edamame 1 cup shredded green cabbage 1 cup shredded red cabbage ½ medium red onion, sliced thinly ½ cup cilantro washed and removed from stem ¼ toasted sunflower seeds STEP 1: Preheat a non-stick saute pan over medium heat. STEP 2: Lightly coat your halloumi with a neutral oil (canola or grapeseed) and arrange the halloumi in the preheated pan. Sear for 3-4 minutes, flipping the cheese over once, until golden brown edge to edge and the cheese has warmed through. STEP 3: In a mixing bowl toss washed romaine with 1/3 Cup of prepared carrot-ginger vinaigrette. Taste and if desired add more vinaigrette to your liking. On a serving platter place dressed romaine lettuce as a bed for the remaining ingredients. STEP 4: In a separate mixing bowl combine broccoli, red pepper, edamame, red and green cabbage, red onion and cilantro with an additional ½ cup of the prepared carrot-ginger vinaigrette. Toss well and taste, if you prefer add another tablespoon or two of the vinaigrette. STEP 5: Top the plated romaine with your dressed vegetables then sprinkle with toasted sunflower seeds top with the caramelized Halloumi. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Favourite player on tour (PGA or LPGA): Rory Mcilroy What inspires you about this player? I really like how he conducts himself on and off the course; he is incredibly humble and respectful. Best tournament/score and placement: Best tournament score was a 66 at the Cordova Bay Invitational, and my best finish is probably 2nd place at the CN Future Links Pacifics tournament. What made you want to participate in the Privileged Membership at the Glencoe? I have been lucky enough to practice and play at the Glencoe for the last couple of years through the Privileged Members program, and every year I have loved this place more and more. The Glencoe is such an amazing place, not only in terms of the quality of the facility, but also the amazing atmosphere that the Club promotes. Everyone is extremely kind, supportive and respectful, and there is a wealth of incredibly good golfers that play here. I decided to participate in this program again this season because I believe that the Glencoe is the best environment for me to push my game to the highest level and have the most fun while doing so. What are you most looking forward to this season at the Glencoe? I am really looking forward to the Forest course getting firm and fast and challenging my game in those conditions. Current College/ School or Grade: I am currently in my second year of Business Communication attending Lewis Clark State College in Idaho on a golf scholarship. I’m absolutely loving playing competitive golf and getting my education its been a ton of fun. At what age did you start playing golf? Who inspired you to get into the game? Originally my sport of choice was hockey, but at the age of 12 I went to the driving range with my dad and tried golf, I fell in love with it right away. I wanted to play just like my dad. Current index/handicap: 1.6 Favourite course ever played: My favourite course has to be Chambers Bay just outside of Seattle, its very challenging and beautiful. Favourite golf club in the bag and why: My favourite club in the bag easily is my driver, I enjoy bombing it down the fairway trying to work the ball both ways. Favourite player on tour (PGA or LPGA): Favourite player on tour easily is Tiger Woods, I share a birthday with him. I have always enjoyed his determination, work ethic and never say die attitude. Best tournament/score and placement: My best tournament score is a 72 in a variety of tournaments, I won a few junior tournaments when I was younger, but I’m really working hard on my game to get my first college win. Hopefully soon! What made you want to participate in the Privileged Membership at the Glencoe? I’ve been a sponsored member at the Glencoe for the last 4 years, I love my time there, I have met so many incredible people and everyone has been so nice to me. The practice facilities and courses are the best in the city by far, its a privilege to play them daily. What are you most looking forward to this season at the Glencoe? The time I spend with Ryan helping out with the juniors. I love going out playing

with them, teaching them different things I have learned over the years. It’s so much fun seeing them laughing, enjoying their time on the course. Golf tip to offer our members: The biggest tip I can give to anyone is have fun. We forget that golf is a game, not a job. Enjoy the process of trying to get better and enjoy the people your sharing the golf experience with.

My mom and my grandpa were the two main influences in my life who introduced me to golf. They would take me out all the time and helped develop my passion for the game. They are still, to this day, two of my biggest supporters and have helped me continue to love golf. Having the opportunity to play on such amazing courses and having access to the outstanding practice facilities was what drew me first to the Privileged Member program. It’s my get out of jail free card, it can be especially useful around the Forest course. Favourite player on tour (PGA or LPGA): Patrick Cantlay What inspires you about this player? Patrick is a very complete player, he does everything well and has a strong mental game. He has also overcome an extremely devastating hardship in a car crash to get to where he is today. Best tournament/score and placement: 66 at the Edmonton Petroleum Club to win the Edmonton City Junior.

My parents Nick and Caroline Sekulic, they introduced me to the game and gave me the ability to play it at a competitive level. Favorite Player on the PGA TOUR: Corey Conners What Inspires you about this player: His ability to control the golf ball. Best tournament/score and placement: Final round 66 in the 2020 Saguaro Amateur to win in a playoff was my best 18 hole tournament performance given the circumstances. What made you want to participate in the Privileged Membership at the Glencoe? Best golf course in Alberta, with the best competitive elite players to compete against. The best practice facility which has helped and will help further to get my game to the next level.

BRADLEY MCKEATING Age: 20 Current College/ School or Grade: Second year university at Barry university. At what age did you start playing golf? Who inspired you to get into the game? I started playing golf at the age of 10. My dad and my uncles were the first people to get me into the game. I started playing golf because my dad used to always go out with his brothers to play and one day, he took me to go play a par three course with him. I instantly got hooked on the game. Current index/handicap: +2 handicap Favourite course ever played: My favorite course I have ever played was St. Andrews in Scotland. Favourite golf club in the bag and why: My favorite club in my bag is my 7 iron. I am known to practice with this club way too much. I love it because I feel like it is the best club to work on your overall swing with. Favourite player on tour (PGA or LPGA): My favorite player is Tiger Woods. What Inspires you about this player: I am inspired by Tiger because of his work ethic. He worked harder than anyone and dominated to world of golf. That to me is inspiring. Best tournament/score and placement: My best tournament score ever was a 67 at the 2017 western championship at Ferine Golf Club. I didn’t play too well the other days and ended up finishing in T17.


GOLF What made you want to participate in the Privileged Membership at the Glencoe? I felt like the Glencoe was the best place in the whole province to work at and develop my game. It has two very good courses with one being a championship course that can beat you up and makes you hit better, smarter golf shots. The worldrenowned Practice Facility at the Glencoe is one of the best I have ever seen and it’s the best place to work on and develop my game for success. What are you most looking forward to this season at the Glencoe? I am most looking forward to practicing and developing my game to the highest level it can be. I am excited to be involved with the members and create a fun environment at the Glencoe while we all try and get better. I started swinging a golf club at 8 years old. Seeing my parents golf inspired me to start trying golf. Current index/handicap: 0.9 Favourite course ever played: Spanish Bay - Pebble Beach Favourite golf club in the bag and why: 560 Wedge - I love the versatility I have with a 560 Wedge and find it satisfying to see the ball’s reaction to spin on a green. Favourite player on tour (PGA or LPGA): Justin Thomas What inspires you about this player? His demeanor on the golf course and his ability to close out tournaments in style. Best tournament/score and placement: Mclennan Ross at Woodside. Score: 66, 1st placement. What made you want to participate in the Privileged Membership at the Glencoe? 1) Glencoe has the best Practice Facility in the country along with 3 amazing courses to play. 2) A recurring theme in junior golf is that most of the best junior and amateur golfers in Canada belong to the Glencoe. I joined Glencoe to uphold Glencoe’s reputation of producing some of the best competitive golfers when it comes to tournament play. 3) I have been working with Luke Workman for two consecutive winters and would like to continue that throughout the summer. What are you most looking forward to this season at the Glencoe? Spending most of my summer at the Glencoe practicing and playing while meeting new members and friends along the way while inspiring other junior

I can always trust it to get me in the fairway. Favourite player on tour (PGA or LPGA): On the PGA, I idolize young stars such as Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, and Matthew Wolff. On the LPGA, I obviously support our very own Jaclyn Lee. What inspires you about this player? I look at the young stars and think about how they aren’t much older than me, and it helps me believe anything is possible. Best tournament/score and placement: Lowest score: 2021 JGAA Thunderbird Invitational: 64(-8). Best result: 2020 Alberta Junior, where I won by 8 shots. What made you want to participate in the Privileged Membership at the Glencoe? The facilities are outstanding, and I have a countless selection of great players to play with daily. What are you most looking forward to this season at the Glencoe? I can’t wait to play all summer on the amazing 45 holes I have access to! What are you most looking forward to this season at the Glencoe? Meeting members and also getting to play. I am also looking forward to using the amazing practice facilities like the chipping areas. My hockey coach was the Head Pro at Carnmoney and got me started. He was the one that pushed me to become a competitive player. The reason why is because I only had clubs that went to a 6 iron in the past. Now that I have a 4 iron it’s a whole new journey and I like the distance that it gets. I find him inspirational in that he’s not the biggest player, yet competes hard and can really crank the ball. He’s fun to watch and stays in great shape. I wanted the opportunity to join because I have heard great things about the courses, Junior Program and the coaches at the Glencoe. I am most looking forward to meeting and playing with other skilled juniors and working with the Glencoe coaches. I’m also very excited to play the Glencoe courses and challenge myself this season. hese are the most common questions we hear when it comes to purchasing new equipment or checking what your current equipment is doing for your game. Club fitting affects your golf swing, your wedge game and putting. It does not matter what your index or ability level is, or if you play for fun and do not keep a score. If you are going to give yourself the best opportunity to improve on the above metrics, a club fitting consultation with our Professional staff is step one.

THE GOLF CANADA MOBILE APP The rapid spread of technology has been heightened by the pandemic. Two such areas of increased usage are virtual scorecards and posting scores digitally. There is shot-by-shot GPS and the ability to track game stats including driving accuracy, greens in regulation, putting strokes, sand shots, and ups and downs. If you have been watching golf during the winter months, you may have noticed that more and more Tour golfers are putting from just off the green. But it is impossible to putt all the time, you will need the chip shot. If you are looking to lower your scores this year, one of the best ways to do this is to have more accuracy and better distance around the green. The PGA and LPGA players on TV make it look so easy getting the ball close to the hole. They can do it in so many creative ways by hitting it high, low, spin or more roll, they seem to have a shot for every situation. Here is a shot that just may be one of the simplest to accomplish called a chip shot with the ‘y’ setup.

Grip down on the club and stand closer for more control. Feet close together, about 2-4 inches apart or one clubhead apart. Make sure your weight is more on your front foot and sternum is level or tilted forward slightly from the ball. 4. Create a triangle with your arms and shoulders and press hands forward so that the shaft leans to the target with the clubface facing the target. This creates the ‘y’ setup position. The key to the ‘y’ chip is creating and maintaining the ‘y’ position during your swing. Keep your shoulders, arms, and the club in a consistent position during the shot. Practice this by making small practice swings back and forth while affirming the ‘y’ position. Then practice hitting shots keeping the structure of the shoulders, arms, and club during the shot. Add a small amount of target leg hip turn to the shot to help maintain the ‘y’ on longer shots. WINTER PROTECTION

H

ow the course wintered is always a concern of golfers and turf managers alike. “Putting the course to bed” is one of the most important parts of our season, as being ready for winter is what sets up the bast chance for a manageable spring. The goal of a good winter preparation program is to mitigate the risks that can occur from: • Cold temperature kill • Ice damage • Crown hydration • Snow mold • Desiccation • Animal damage • Mechanical damage Preparing the greens for winter starts in the late summer and into fall. Ensuring the greens are healthy going into winter is a top priority. You won’t come out of winter with more grass than you have going in! Raising the mowing height, changing nutrition, and applying plant products such as fungicides and biostimulants that protect the plant from pathogens are some of the tools to help the turf over winter. As daylight hours reduce and temperatures start to drop, the plant will produce more carbohydrates to store as energy to help get it through the winter. Raising the mowing height allows a longer leaf blade and more surface area for photosynthesis and helps drive more root growth. As the plant starts to go into dormancy, we will do our final fungicide applications to protect the grass from snow mold. Grey snow mold (or typhula blight) occurs under prolonged snow cover. The pathogen will eat away at leaf tissue and will present as a grey fuzz with black spots, patches can be up to several feet in width. Pink snow mold (Michrodochium patch or fusarium patch) does not require snow cover and occurs

with cool, wet temperatures. It presents with a pinkish hue and severe outbreaks will result in bleached leaf tissue where the pathogen eats the crown of the plant, resulting in plant death. When the plant goes dormant, it has brought sugars and amino acids to the crown. These act as a sort of anti-freeze to protect the plant from cold weather damage. They prevent the crown from freezing and rupturing cell walls that can result in plant damage and even death, while also provide energy for respiration through the winter months. Ice cover can cause several problems for turfgrass. It can block air transfer, which causes anoxia (lack of oxygen) and will prevent the plant from performing respiration which can lead to plant death. This condition is very noticeable as it will result in rotting grass come spring, smelling like rotten eggs. Ice can lead to other problems; with our freeze and thaw cycles, it can lead to buildups of water that result in early crown hydration which can bring the plant out of dormancy and cause the plant to lose its winter hardiness. When another freeze comes through, the plant does not have its natural defenses against the cold as it wants to convert those sugars and amino acids to growth. If the length of time of ice coverage is a concern, the decision can be made to clear snow off the greens with snowblowers or by shoveling. However, this does pose a risk of mechanical damage to the greens so it needs to be weighed against the likelihood of damage from extended ice coverage. Desiccation is another issue that can occur. Without snow cover, the plant becomes exposed to cold, dry winds, drawing any moisture out of the plant and soil. The lack

of cover can also expose the plant to more sun, which can cause some bleaching. Greens that experience less snow cover (#10 Forest) will have a permeable tarp to cover it to protect them from desiccation. Certain grasses handle winter differently. Creeping bentgrass is one of the hardiest winter grasses. It can handle temperatures below -30 celsius, 90 days under ice, and resists crown hydration. On The Forest and Bridges, where we are managing for bentgrass, we provide the greens as little protection against cold and ice as we can. Keeping the greens clear until January means that any ice coverage forming after Christmas should be handled by the greens until spring and will hopefully cause problems for any poa that has found its way into the greens. Some bentgrass greens have posed problems with extensive ice coverage as they hold snow and ice much longer (#4 and #18 Forest, and #6 Bridges) and different systems are being tried to protect against ice. For the rest of the bentgrass greens, the winter prep is fairly simple. Spray with a fungicide to protect against snow mold, top dress the greens where the sand will help protect the crown, and then wait for the snow. Annual bluegrass (poa annua) on the other hand does not handle winter very well. Its cold tolerance is poor, especially at greens height. Ice damage can occur after only 30 days of snow cover, with research showing that even less than 30 days of ice cover can cause the plant to lose its winter hardiness and increase it’s susceptibility to early crown hydration. challenging grass to deal with going into winter. To protect against the problems poa annua can face, we have ‘The Sandwich System.’ A permeable tarp is placed on the green. This allows gas exchange, provides some insulating factor, especially in the spring when temperatures can vary and the straw has been cleared off, and makes cleanup much easier. Flax straw is then spread across the green, roughly knee height, to provide the insulation the green needs to stay at a comfortable temperature through the winter. Flax is messy, but is relatively cheap to acquire, resists compaction, and allows enough air transfer to not have to worry about anoxia (plant respiration essentially starving itself of oxygen) during the winter. Once the flax is spread, an impermeable tarp is placed on top, which prevents snow and ice from reaching through to the green. This tarp is nailed down with hundreds of six-inch spikes to keep it in place. Greens with adequate snow cover have often been left out of the sandwich system (#2 and #5 Slopes), but with damage the past few years from changing weather patterns, mostly due to spring thaw cycles, a new system was tried involving a product called ‘Futerra mat’. This is a synthetic, fibrous mesh material that does not provide insulation, but allows the air transfer so an impermeable tarp could be placed over these greens to protect from the ice caused by freeze-thaw cycles, while the snow cover provides the insulation. This is a product and system with extensive use in the Edmonton region with success.

SPRING GARDENING TIPS Cleaning beds When cleaning out your beds in spring, stick to pruning shrubs until temperatures consistently reach above freezing. Keep those early spouting perennials covered with debris as long as possible. This will insulate the delicate growth from spring snowstorms we so often get. Splitting plants tip Splitting plant tips is often done in spring, but this is not always ideal. If it blooms in spring/early summer, dig and split in the fall. If it blooms in late summer/early fall, dig and split in the spring.

When temperatures and the forecast allow, the tarps are removed, the flax is pushed where it can be collected, and the greens can be uncovered. There are no guarantees with turf, but the tarping methods provide the best chance for success for the Poa Annua greens through the winter.

AUDUBON RECERTIFICATION Since 2008, The Glencoe Golf & Country Club has been a certified member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf.

I

t is our commitment to enhance the natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide and reduce the environmental impact our operations can have. Audubon International developed Standard Environmental Management Practices that golf courses could implement to help care for the land, water, wildlife, and other natural resources the course is situated on. With The Glencoe’s position along the Elbow River, which is the source of drinking water for hundreds of thousands of Calgarians, good environmental stewardship is vitally important to our role in the community. The core areas of focus to be an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary include: • Wildlife and Habitat Management • Chemical Use Reduction and Safety • Water Conservation • Water Quality Management • Outreach and Education Wildlife is a familiar sight on the property. From the pesky voles and ground squirrels to deer, moose, coyotes, and even bears. A diverse number of bird species also call the property home, and we even maintain beehives to aid other local

pollinators. Ways we can maintain this biodiversity is by expanding unmaintained areas to provide travel corridors and foraging spaces, the disposal of certain waste material to create habitats, and even building man-made structures like beehives, bat boxes and birdhouses. A diverse gathering of wildlife is a sign of a strong environment to live in. Our biggest advancements in the past several years have been to our Chemical Use and Safety. Since our last recertification, the Club has invested in GPS technology on our field sprayers with single nozzle control, allowing more precision in application and a reduction in product used. Last year the Club

completed the construction of a new maintenance building behind 9 Bridges green that is used to store our pesticides, fertilizer, and application equipment. This building is out of the flood plain, significantly reducing the environmental impact of a potential flood event. The enclosed fill area with sumps means any spills or fill errors are contained and can be dealt with in an environmentally responsible way. The building’s storage capacity also allows us to use a variety of new products that were not practical to store and mix in our old facilities, which help make our product applications more efficient. The expansion of ‘Low Input Areas’ also reduces the areas that need fertilizer and pesticide. These steps have allowed us to use less product, use products in a way that limits the chance of leeching, and apply it more accurately helping to reduce our environmental impact. Even steps taken to reduce poa intrusion into our bentgrass greens has a chemical reduction component, as bentgrass requires significantly less protection from turf disease. In addition to a lower environmental impact, the product savings from managing the bentgrass greens is tens of thousands less than their annual bluegrass counterparts. This money can then be used on other inputs for the golf course to provide the conditions members expect. Our position along the Elbow River means our actions can affect the drinking water of many Albertans, so managing water


quality is of vital importance. We do regular water quality testing at several points on the site: our intake, our irrigation ponds (#4/5/6 Lakes is the irrigation pond for the Forest and Meadows, #9 Bridges feeds the Bridges and Practice Facility), and our output water. This way we can track the effect that our actions have on the water quality. One of the key metrics is the amount of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous in the water. These are key indicators for leeching of fertilizer and contribute to aquatic pollution and weeds. The use of buffer strips (longer grass along water edges) and a change to our sprayer technology helps mitigate the risk of nutrients and other chemicals getting into the water (it also provides a habitat for ducks and other wildlife). The goal of our water management is to have the water that leaves the property be as clean, if not cleaner, than the water that enters it. Another key indicator for water quality is amphibians, which are sensitive to changes in the environment. Wood frogs and salamanders make the ponds and creeks on the golf course home.

Pond maintenance is an ongoing challenge as we are limited in what products can be used for things like aquatic weed management. Natural methods have been attempted such as stocking the pond with fish that eat such weeds, though the ospreys seem to have benefitted the most from that program. Last season an aeration system was installed in one of the ponds to help with water quality and the system will be expanded to other ponds on the property to help manage weeds and algae without chemicals. Repair work to creek valves will also allow certain features to beshut down for manual management of creek foliage. Currently this can only happen in late spring and early fall when the water intake is shut down completely.

By choosing areas based on their impact on traffic and play, with irrigation in mind, these areas can have a minimal impact on play while providing significant environmental benefit. Through our process of getting recertified it is good to look back on the positive changes we’ve made over the past several years for our environmental management and will continue to find improvements to reduce our impact and be leaders of environmental stewardship in golf.

Water conservation is also important. Managing moisture on the golf course is one of the most important ways to provide excellent playing conditions while balancing turf health. Continuously finding more efficiencies in our irrigation system and keeping up with maintenance, investments into the pumphouses to make watering more efficient (using less power) and connecting the Practice Facility irrigation to the Bridges pumphouse are ways we can continue to use our water resources as efficiently as possible. The expansion of Low Input Areas also reduces the number of acres that need to be irrigated, resulting in significant water savings. In previous years, certain naturalized areas were not created based on irrigation

MEET Shannon Raina & Colin Yarchuck

B

etween Judy Forshner, Daryl Patrick, Gord Newis, Glenn Boswell, and myself, we have roughly 100 years of experience working at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. While this vast experience brings a lot of positive contributions to the Club it also has it shortfalls. I can vouch for the fact that one member of this crew is no longer in possession of a full complement of teeth, we all need to take afternoon naps, we are becoming more forgetful by the day, and we never like to miss the Blue Plate special at our local restaurant. At least once per day you will hear one of us utter the phrase, “Has anyone seen my car keys?.” To help counterbalance the aging core of our crew we were very excited to welcome two new Golf Professionals to our team at the beginning of the 2020 golf season: Shannon Raina and Colin Yarchuk. Shannon is originally from Calgary and was previously working at the Sirocco Golf Club in her third year as a Golf Professional. Colin is originally from Winnipeg and was working at the Clear Lake Golf Club near Winnipeg in his second year as a Golf Professional. These two young Golf Professionals had strong skills and experience, and we were very excited to have them join our team. Shannon and Colin brought enthusiasm, energy, and many fresh ideas to our crew. We want the membership to get to know Shannon and Colin a little better this season. SHANNON RAINA When and how did you start playing golf? I started playing golf when I was 10. My family played a lot, so that definitely pushed me to get into it. Do you have a favourite childhood golf memory? I have so many it would be hard to pick just one! I grew up playing at Canyon Meadows with my older brother. I spent most of my days there during the summer. I feel so lucky to have grown up playing at Canyon! When did you know you wanted to pursue being a Golf Professional as a career? I graduated from the University of Victoria in 2016 and frankly, being a Golf Pofessional was far from my mind. I returned to work in the industry as a shop assistant and knew quickly this was the career for me. This was also largely influenced by the Golf Professionals who I was working for. What is the best round of golf you have ever played? The best round of golf I have ever played was in my family’s annual golf tournament. I was playing a match against my brother. Even though I lost, we both played great, and it was easily the most fun I have had on the course. What is your favourite part about being a Golf Professional? My favourite part about being a Golf Professional is the ability to help people. Whether it is a swing fix on the range, new clubs, or simply helping them find something in the shop that they love. Making people happy drives me to be the best Golf Professional I can be.

What are your responsibilities at the Glencoe? My main responsibilities at the Glencoe include running the Ladies Program, club fittings, purchasing and merchandising all ladies wear, and teaching lessons. When you are not at work, and not golfing, what activities or hobbies do you enjoy? I love to cook!

When and how did you start playing golf? I started playing Golf at around age 5 with my grandparents at a local 9-hole par 3 course in my hometown of Winnipeg. Do you have a favourite childhood golf memory? Some of my finest childhood memories include every summer when my parents would rent a cottage for a week up at Clear Lake, and my father and I would play the golf course there. When did you know you wanted to pursue being a Golf Professional as a career? Around the time when I was 18 or 19. I had been lucky enough to play multiple sports as a kid growing up and had just finished working my first year as a pro shop attendant. I loved being at the golf course and around the game, and when I came back the next summer, the head professional at Clear Lake mentored and helped me decide what path I wanted to go down. He was instrumental in showing me different aspects of the business. What is the best round of golf you have ever played? The best round of golf I have ever played was a 65 at Clear Lake. What is your favourite part about being a Golf Professional? My favourite part of being a Golf Professional would have to be the day-today interactions with different members and all of the people you get to meet. I also love to teach and help people get the best

out of their game. The idea that you can always improve from where you are, and that you never quite have all the pieces figured out, is fascinating to me. What are your responsibilities at the Glencoe? Here at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club, I have the opportunity to run the Seniors League, which I quite enjoy. I love being down there on Thursday mornings and chatting with some of the members before they play about any new swing thoughts, tips to help them play better that day, or just talking through different strategies to playing certain holes. I’m also very fortunate to be able to do a few different things like club repair and defectives, and the opportunity to be in the Golf Shop quite a bit helping, and interacting with members on a day to day basis. When you are not at work, and not golfing, what activities or hobbies do you enjoy? While most of the summer is spent at the golf course, outside of work I really enjoy being outdoors, whether that be biking, hiking, or exploring the booming craft beer industry around Calgary. I also really enjoy reading books. I think books provide you with unique insight, and an opportunity to learn new things outside of the world of golf.

LIGHTNING POLICY

In the event of a lightning strike within an eight-kilometer radius, a police siren will sound. It is recommended shelter be taken. All play will be suspended for all Club leagues and tournaments when a lightning delay is in effect. An intermittent horn will sound when it is safe to resume play.

CELL PHONE POLICY

The use of cellular and Wi-Fi enabled devices is permitted in all areas of the Clubhouse. The use of any device, with camera capabilities, is not permitted in the locker rooms. As a courtesy to other players, it is requested that cellular and Wi-Fi enabled devices on the Golf Course and Practice Facility be used only in case of emergencies or when their use will not be offensive to others.

GOLF RULE

Members’ guests are allowed to warm-up on the Practice Facility only if they are registered to play golf the same day. If you encounter slow play on the golf course you are encouraged to call the Golf Shop at 403-571-0055.

DRESS CODE

Blue jeans, in good repair are only permissible in the Clubhouse. Pants/Shorts/Skorts/Skirts that are in good repair. It is advised that skorts/skirts sold in the Golf Shop or major golf retailers would meet both the style requirements and the length of “reasonable standard” regardless of brand and or fit differentials on different body types. For Ladies, shirts may have sleeves or a collar but must have one or the other. Tank top styles are not permitted. For Men, golf shirts with sleeves and collars are required. Shirts must be tucked in at the waist at all times unless designed to be worn untucked. (Defined as buttoned from collar to hem, hemmed and evenly cut around the bottom.)
