COMMODITY: COAL
R72.5 million. It took 118 087 hours to complete. Kinross reservoir repair was completed in December 2014, after the project commenced in May 2013. This was the cheapest project and although R1.5 million was budgeted, the actual spend was only R1.2 million.
Local economic development projects Health centre and fire station
“While Koppies, in the Free State, received a community health centre to the value of R5.5 million, which took seven months to complete, Leandra in Mpumalanga, received a new fire station,” says Louw. The fire station also took about seven months to complete and cost R6.7 million. Both the projects were started and completed in 2014.
Nthoroane roads The project that took the least time to complete was the Nthoroane roads project. During the six months from March to September 2014, Sasol Mining constructed 2 km of paved roads and V-drains for the community of Nthoroane, in Greylingstad, Mpumalanga. Once again, the project team managed to save some money and only spent R9.7 million of the approved budget of R10 million.
Affordable housing project As part of Sasol’s social and labour plan, the company will build 300 affordable houses for its workers. Of these, 100 will be in Secunda, 100 in Sasolburg, and 100 in eMbalenhle. The infrastructure for the houses is ready in Secunda and eMbalenhle, but the project is yet to commence in Sasolburg. Louw explains that, although Sasol built the infrastructure, the employees will have to carry the cost of the top structures themselves. To assist the employees in obtaining bonds for the houses, Sasol negotiated with FNB to assist the workers with more than just the financing of bonds and other hidden costs. This project started in November 2013 with an approved budget of R67.7 million. The Sasol Mine Replacement Programme
has been a huge undertaking by Sasol and the company has involved the communities, where it could, to ensure that they also benefit from the programme. Sasol Mining supplies 42 million tonnes of coal a year to Synfuels. Considering that Sasol has a strategy to keep on supplying coal to Synfuels, until at least 2050, there will surely be more replacement and investment projects to look forward to.
