Reality in Flames explores the different ways in which Australian modernist artists responded creatively to the war, producing work which sought to comprehend cataclysmic events. It also provides a visual history of the period, revealing the war as a transformative force that altered Australia and the world.

war art scheme, where artists were commissioned to record the experience of Australians fighting overseas or of home-front wartime activity – a tradition that began during the First World War and continues today.

Artists have always played a crucial role in recording and interpreting the Australian experience of war, and the works in this touring exhibition explore both the dangers soldiers faced abroad and the challenges war brought to the home front and to Australian society itself.

Clay Intersections presents the work of eight contemporary makers who take a range of innovative approaches to making and working with clay, exploring the different intersections of its sculptural and functional qualities.

Highlighting the work of Bridget Bodenham, Cone 11's Colin Hopkins and Ilona Topolcsanyi, Helen Earl, Tania Rollond, Natalie Rosin, Ulrica Trulsson and Kenji Uranishi, the artists in Clay Intersections draw their inspiration from the built or natural environment and how they interact with it – whether in contemplation or in a practical sense – enhancing the way we live.

While some have been discovering the versatility of clay, setting new trends and engaging new audiences, others have set out to the learn age-old practices of wheel forming, casting and hand building, spending countless hours developing techniques and mastering skills.

Together, these eight artists are part of a new generation of craftspeople and designer-makers who have emerged alongside new and non-traditional market places outside the gallery and retail environment.

Get Creative

Meet our local artists: A casual drop in opportunity to meet local exhibiting artists amongst their works. Have a chat or simply observe the artists at work. A wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the artists practice and the exhibitions on display.

Kerry Wheeldon Kerry began her potting career at a local Port Macquarie pottery thirty-five years ago. Working as a production thrower and made thousands of pieces of domestic ware. Setting up her own studio was where the real learnings evolved, where she learnt the necessary skills of glaze making, glazing and firing a kiln. Even after all these years and hundreds of firings Kerry still gets excited to see what comes out of the kiln.

Beric Henderson Beric Henderson has a background in art and science and has been exhibited for over 15 years. His past scientific career involved the study of human biology at the level of cells and molecules, using high-end microscopy to observe the shape of life from within. As an artist his current work aims to capture the complexity, beauty and harmony of nature and to explore the interconnectedness of man and the natural world.

Wander through the Threaded Earth exhibition with artist Vana Ford as she relives the experience of building the collection. Make your own eco-dyed silk scarf and dabble with some natural colours to dye and paint handmade paper. Embellish your scarf with some stitching and printing! $55 Bookings essential.

Artist Talk & exhibition closing celebration.

To celebrate and close our wonderful summer exhibition programming, exhibiting artist Beric Henderson will present a talk exploring the fast-growing influence of science on the art world.

Sunday 12 January, 2pm FREE

Drawing from his experiences as a research scientist, and his recent contribution to an art exhibition in Venice, this talk will present images and video of some amazing international exhibitions from 2019 that cover topics including the impact of climate change, genetically modified foods, environment and technology. Fiona Solley Fiona is an illustrator & surface pattern designer living in Port Macquarie.

“I am a lover of all things patterned, who sees colours, shapes and textures in all that is around me. I combine delicate watercolours, bold colours and graphics, and hand drawn illustrations. My work is inspired by the world around me.”

Rhiannon Simmonds Rhiannon is a self-taught ‘environmental crafter’ living in Port Macquarie.
