For years I have loved reading ‘glossie home magazines’, and I particularly loved all of the projects where they featured the before and after photos. Finally, after living in our home for nearly 14 years, we found the time to do a major renovation and as we got started, I felt like a contestant on ‘one of those reality home reno shows’. I thought it was so clear in my mind what I wanted – boy was I wrong, there were so many decisions to make, and so many things I hadn’t considered that I began to wonder if we had bitten off more than we could chew! One weekend the painter dropped in and I was sitting at the table surrounded by paint charts – who knew there was so many different whites? And I think the painter could see I was getting a bit unhinged. He said to me, he had a sample in the car that he thought would work well and he proceeded to do sample spots throughout the house, choosing spots with different lighting etc. The weight was lifted off my shoulders. It looked perfect and was just the effect that I was hoping for. Once I had said yes that is great, he smiled and said it’s a shade we call builders white! Another day I was speaking to the electrician, he wanted to know where I wanted a particular light switch and I really wasn’t sure. I asked him what he thought and he politely told me that it was my choice. So I decided to rephrase the question and said if it was your house where would you put it and he quickly said well on this corner - this is a light you would turn off on your way out of the room at night so here. Well so much for my extensive knowledge of home decoration gleaned over many, many hours of pouring over magazines. My hot tip is to speak to the professionals and try not to choose things based just on how they look! Regards,

Thinking about renovating? Now is a great time to think ahead about preparing for the upcoming Christmas and summer season. This is traditionally a busy time of year with entertaining and family-time often a priority, and so now is the time to plan those projects and have your property prepared so you can relax and enjoy your time off with friends and family without last minute hassles. Here at Jaz Build, we encourage our clients to consider any preparation and potential renovation decisions before Christmas. Typically, people will call with last minute requests that are impossible to complete in time, but by planning and booking ahead, these jobs can be easily completed to let you enjoy the silly season. People should also be prepared for summer. Leaking structures should be repaired before the rain season – as water damage can be serious. Check your roof, gutters, fascias and other areas that need repairs.
In our region, white ants are also a major concern, so either check your property yourself thoroughly or give John at Glasshouse Country Pest Control a call on 0407 439 526. Christmas is often an expensive time of year. Jaz Build has found that clients are enjoying the great benefits of investing in their own property, and creating a perfect entertaining space. A new bar, deck or outdoor entertainment area will bring the party to you and save money in the long term. Who doesn’t want to relax and take in the great surroundings we have in the Hinterland and Glasshouse Country region? Outdoor zones provide an extension of the family home and the opportunity to have some fun in a safe and comfortable environment. Popular additions currently include pizza ovens, fire pits, pool decking and outdoor barbecues, as well as new patios to extend the family living area. Also popular are requests for extensions to provide
extra room for guests and / or more space for the family. We offer people design advice, that can include changing the feel of a dull room to lighten the space and revitalise your home. You can’t buy the views we have in city real estate – so make the most of this lucky country region and let us assist in helping you fully enjoy your living space.

Local legend seizes business opportunity
Learn about Feng Shui
Business feature Neil Goodall already owns a number of successful businesses. With over 30 years experience in the building industry, Neil is a well known character around the Port Douglas area. Neil currently runs a building company, earthmoving business and operates a number of commercial trucks, employing numerous staff. He recently added Transportable Shade Sheds to his business portfolio when he became a reseller in May. For resellers like Neil, Transportable Shade Sheds is an excellent Australian made product that offers a potential revenue stream that can be managed on his own terms around his existing businesses. Transportable Shade Sheds can provide a financial backup option for established business owners or alternatively the fully equipped trailer can provide a recognisable brand that provides a stepping stone to launch other business options. Neil’s businesses come under his ‘Didja Hire’ company name. The advantage of adding Transportable Shade Sheds is that it provides an alternative avenue of income potential that he can explore in the downtime between his other jobs. As resellers operate as their own boss and are not tied into franchise limitations, this option can be accessed as much or as little as the reseller chooses – they own the trailer so the opportunities they pursue are entirely at their discretion. Neil has identified a number of rural opportunities for selling Transportable Shade Sheds. In the hope of eventually getting one of his staff members to sustainably maintain that side of his business, Neil is looking to garner additional interest in the product by attending rural shows and exhibitions. Looking forward to attending local events with the product, Neil will be able to increase his public profile which will no doubt prove beneficial. Although only recently joining other small business owners throughout Australia in becoming a reseller, Neil has found that having the additional business has already opened doors and provided networks that have benefitted his existing businesses. “The sheds are just so easy to put up and they provide a good affordable option made out of proper steel. It’s a great product with a simple design that can be adjusted and adapted,” explained Neil. Becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller provides small business owners with an identifiable reputable product. The solid foundation is complimented by the access to additional opportunities that resellers can enjoy through the collaboration of Transportable Shade Sheds with the online marketing and mentoring platform Saver6.com which provides online promotion and digital presence across a range of digital platforms including eBay, gumtree and facebook. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Port Douglas and surrounding areas contact Neil via social media or on 0418 757 129. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at a business option that may allow more time at home with your family then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 5405 3620.
Please call Neil Goodall, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you with your Transportable Shade Shed purchase.

Simon is Pristine Water Systems Australia's latest catch. He services Caloundra, and Glass House Mountains to Kilcoy, as well as the Mount Mee region. He really enjoys getting out in the area and meeting new clients – he loves a chat and is truly committed to his customers’ needs. He also appreciates the daily contact and support with the head office team to ensure the best solution for each client. Simon stresses the often over-looked importance of clean tank water. "Tank cleaning is hugely important, the stuff I have
Simon Lacey (left) and Allen Pitcher (right) pulled out of tanks you wouldn't believe,” he said. "Roofs pick up anything and when you're in country areas there's also dust, crop spraying and pesticides washed into tanks, then there's flying foxes, birds, rats, faeces – the list goes on. "It's not high on people's priority list but tank cleaning is a necessity and inexpensive. "People should probably be getting their tanks checked annually." To get in contact, please phone Simon on 0411 774 767. Introducing Allen Pitcher Allen has come from the commercial mining and gas industry, and also has extensive knowledge of both chemicals and cleaning. Allen made the change to Pristine Water Systems Australia on April Fool’s day this year and the only foolish thing he feels about the move is he wish he had made it years ago! Allen services Glenview and Landsborough, out to Maleny and the hinterland.
Wanting to spend time outside and be mobile, Allen has embraced the opportunity to spend more time closer to home as well. Through his own working experience and the extensive training and support offered by the Pristine Water Systems team, he enjoys offering his clients an individualised service to suit their exact requirements. “Each day I do the best I can to educate clients on how important using the best quality water is – don’t take chances with your family’s health,” he said. “Knowing how different chemicals can affect your body with daily use, I don’t like the thought of people poisoning themselves. Especially the young, elderly or immune suppressed. Correct filtration and water storage can really make a difference in all our lives.” To discuss what Allen can do to make your water the purest available, please call on 0404 302 723 today.

Lea Parkes - editor of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News When I watch those Reality television shows where a bunch of people come into your house, get rid of almost everything you own, and completely makeover your home, I always think, oh no they have taken away the memories and treasures that make the home unique! For me, while I definitely buy new decorator items for our home, I also enjoy having items that have been passed on to me by the people I love. Sometimes this means gifts from friends that they have chosen especially for me or other times it is keeping an item that is a little bit of someone, who is no longer around. In this ‘Home and Garden’ feature I thought I would choose a few items that I love and make me feel like I am ‘at home’ to share with you all. I am not sure what all these items say about me… some people might just call it a house with nothing that matches / co-ordinates but I like to refer to my overall design style as eclectic which is defined as - deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. I look forward to sharing someone else’s treasures next time.

STREET PRIDE I recently sold in Mooloolah Valley and phoned Aaron from Street Pride Pressure Cleaning to clean the external areas of my home in time for real estate photos. The roof, driveway and external walls all looked amazing - the place sold in the first week and I have since had Aaron back to clean up my new house in Glass House Mountains. Great communication and great work - highly recommended. Wendy Sheather, Business Manager

Will the risk of renovation pay off? Beerwah couple, Jessica and Peter Debenham are your regular mid-twenties students, but own a home that Peter secured with some capital from a career previous to studying. With a change in lifestyle needs, and with some spare change in their pockets, the two hesitantly decided to take the risk to renovate over their mid-year study break, with the view to try selling on their own. The big question now is whether the renovation has been worth the time and money for the sale which goes online this week. “It’s been a fun, but testing experience,” says Peter. “I think renovations are a sure way to challenge a relationship,” adds Jessica with a smile. “We know what we like, and we know what makes a home feel like a home to us - but knowing what that means to others is difficult,” Peter says. “We’ve sort of gone with a spend big - spend well, spend small - spend smart approach.” The couple explained that they wanted to do a few things really well, instead of a lot poorly. The property, which is situated in Beerwah’s well established and family orientated Woodgrove Estate, while structurally in top nick, its landscaping and interior finishes were looking a little tired and uninteresting. “The carpets were worn, and there was practically nothing going on in the garden,” she says. “The house seemed average, but we wanted it to be extraordinary - a factor that we hope will be reflected in the sale.”
The couple has mostly done everything on their own. Relatively inexpensive, but effective projects included painting the property’s rough-finish fence and water tank, resurfacing the driveway and garage, and even retiling the kitchen splashback with modern tiles. Jessica says that, for example, the kitchen tiles and grout came to $40.00, which they thought was money well spent considering it completely transformed the space. “These are the small changes we are hoping will add up and make the right impression on buyers. “We had a go at making homely landscaping features from recycled timber, such as the bold letterbox, backyard entertaining bench seating, and a handy herb wall-garden visible directly from the kitchen window. We’re really happy with how our raised beds turned out as well," she says. “We sanded the existing sleepers, stained them, capped them with hardwood screening, and mulched and replanted the beds with a few simple, but sophisticated plants. The backyard looks really smart now - a pleasant place to sit down and enjoy.” The couple did splash out, however, on two key installations that they felt were imperative to
rejuvenating the home’s presentation. “Andersens Caloundra came to our house, with carpet samples, gave professional and useful advice on popular colour and fibre choices, and offered a very competitive quote to us,” says Peter. “Our only reluctance was committing to the cost initially, however, after seeing the remarkable impact the new plush carpet has on the entire interior, we now feel confident that buyers will be just as impressed as we are. The difference is really astounding.” The other big spend was then naturally carpeting the front yard … turf! “We met a friendly local turf farmer in Beerwah' Mick from I Love Turf. He invited us to his farm and took us on a tour of his fields and turf varieties,” Peter says. Mick guided us to Aussie Blue a really lush, deep blue-green, medium-blade grass. It performs exceptionally well on the Sunny Coast, but most importantly suited our budget. He also explained the importance of plant nutrition, and supplied us with his Fertpro fertiliser, which was very important to us as we want the grass looking its absolute best for the sale this week.” The couple are eagerly awaiting to discover the market's reaction this week when the sale goes online. At $449,000, they will surely be getting a lot of interest.
