This year at Maleny Wood Expo it’s all about tapping into your creative side. What will you make? There’s an exciting choice of workshops and projects to suit everyone, from age four to 104.

Carve a spoon, build a cubby, make a didgeridoo or even create a canoe.

Boat builder Brian Jones will be at the expo to assist you and your team in creating a 3.6m hooppine plywood canoe. Seven craft will take shape over the three days of the expo, so get in quick to reserve a spot for your team.

If land-based construction is more your style, how about creating your own play space? The expo cubby house workshops will to guide you in making your own wild thing - a bamboo artwork like no other, designed for children's outdoor play, exploration and creative experimentation. Working with bamboo, foraged garden materials, plywood, cord and wire you will make your very own cubby to take home, decorate and enjoy.

Japanese Tools Australia will host Japanese woodworking classes taught by Takami Kawai and Dylan Iwakuni from the Suikoushya International Craft School in Kyoto. This will be a unique opportunity to be taught by master craftsmen who will guide students through the process of making their own 70mm Japanese smoothing plane.

Why not try your hand at coopering? Coopering workshops will teach the basic techniques of coopering to create a unique wooden bucket, complete with iron hoops and a rope handle.

You will learn how to fashion a stave using hand tools, rough assemble and then shape your bucket using a custom-made hand plane.

Spoon carving with Carol Russell is another great way to release your creative side while making something practical. This is an introduction to using carving tools and getting the feel of working with wood by using a roughly cut out spoon blank and carving a spoon of your own design under Carol's tuition. You will learn basic carving techniques as well as design, tool sharpening and whittling techniques. Carving spoons is a great way to get into woodworking and has a strong creative element and plenty of opportunity to create your own style. But beware - it’s highly addictive!

There will be many other hands-on opportunities to make Mothers’ Day presents, paper making with plants, make a boomerang, weave with natural fibres, make chopsticks, build a model boat, master some macramé, learn hand carving or make bush critters and jewellery.

For some workshops it is best to book beforehand while others will be on the go throughout the expo, so why not explore and see what appeals to the artisan in you.

In the Garden Just a reminder to mark up your diary for the dates of this year’s Gardening on the Edge weekend … which will be on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9.

The Maleny Garden Club (who organise this wonderful event) have been hard at work with plans for this year’s event.

With six open gardens in and around the local area, and a massive plant and garden expo at the Maleny Showgrounds, it’s definitely one to put into your diary now.

It’s only $5 a garden, $13 for three or $25 for all six, and the expo is free entry.

One of the great aspects of the event is that the Maleny Garden Club gives all the proceeds from the weekend back to local groups and organisations.

So, not only are you getting to see some truly lovely gardens, but you will be supporting local community organisations in the process.
