The bedroom is a place to rest and unwind and a good night’s sleep is crucial to total wellbeing. A comfortable mattress and bedroom setting is an essential ingredient to sleeping restfully, but getting it right, can be an overwhelming and difficult task. Forty Winks Group Manager, Kara Norris says with almost a third of our time spent sleeping, it’s important the environment in which we do so is appealing, yet relaxing and comfortable. “Consumers are becoming far more educated about the importance of sleep and the different options available in mattress surfaces and bedroom furniture,” says Kara. A number of factors affect how long your mattress will continue to provide optimum comfort and support. “The lifespan will vary considerably depending on its quality; its frequency of use; the wear and tear it receives, and how well it’s been cared for. “As a general rule, a good quality mattress, with normal use, should be expected to last around 7-10 years,” she said. “Be sure to do plenty of research to know the different options available and always head in-store to talk to a bedding expert before making the final purchase.” Updating the bedroom can be easily achieved through a few simple design updates. “Clever colour selections and complimenting surrounding furniture and furnishings can transform a dull and uninviting space into a bedroom sanctuary,” says Kara. Forty Winks bedroom makeover tips: • Bring the outdoors inside with fresh plants, open windows and plenty of light. • Consider clever storage solutions which maximise space. • When choosing colour, consider tones that make you feel comfortable and complement bed linen, carpets, curtains and soft furnishings. • Introduce an accent wall behind the bed for a feature. • Consider the bed linen theming you have chosen. You can highlight some colours from your linen to tie in the whole setting together. • Accessorising with pillows and throws is a great way to introduce bursts of colour. From budget to luxury – Forty Winks has a range of bedding suites available. See advert Page 1.

Jaz Build

Business feature

Recently Jaz Build has been working on a renovation for a special local client who has had to overcome great personal challenges. On Christmas eve 2011, Sandy, an experienced registered nurse, was driving home to Glass house Mountains when she was hit by a drunk driver and her life was turned upside down. Critically injured, she had to give up her long term nursing career. With ongoing mobility issues and given the severity of her injuries, Sandy and her husband Chris, were looking at the unfortunate prospect of having to sell up their much-loved family home of 28 years. With time on her hands and a determination to overcome these challenges, Sandy threw herself into designing a home layout that would suit her long term mobility needs. Referred to Jaz Build by her

local plumber Mark Simpson, Sandy contacted Barry and Jannean at the end of July, and the renovation project to allow the couple to remain in the family home began. It was a collaborative process from beginning to end, said Sandy. “It has been a delight to deal with Jaz build,” she said. Initially Barry from Jaz Build asked what subcontractors the couple wanted to use for the renovation that included a new deck with balustrade, platform stairs, reworked bathroom, toilet and laundry. Sandy and Chris were keen to use local tradespeople – and the whole renovation has included local tradespeople as well as locally sourced services such as timber from the Peachester Timber Mill. Jaz build has taken the couples ideas and brought their knowledge and expertise to provide their clients with a renovation that happily fits their vision, needs and budget. The design is based on earthy colours, and inspired by Uluru, as well as the clients love of timber. A focal point of the renovation has been the Western Australian Jarrah deck with a stunning oak feature wall. The oak feature wall provides a special “touch of the mother land,” said Chris who is English. To suit Sandy’s mobility needs, the deck has been extended out to massive 135 square metres and the new fit-out includes tiling, new roof and ceiling, lights and stairs. Jannean from Jaz Build says that they have

loved working on this project as “it has added to someone’s life and brought them joy.” “We have been happy to come up with solutions that have provided a good outcome for Sandy and Chris, and importantly, allowed them to stay in the family home,” she adds. Given that the job was booked in by July, Jaz Build were able to complete the project with plenty of time left over before Christmas. One consideration that Jannean would like clients to bear in mind, is that if clients would like to enjoy their renovations in time for family and friends to enjoy for Christmas, to please book in earlier in the year. Ideally by June/July at the latest, as they often get inundated in October, with requests to complete jobs in time for the festive season.

Promised loved ones the lawn of their dreams? Do you have family and friends coming for Christmas? Have you promised a loved one the lawn of their dreams in time for summer? Don’t wait and miss out in the end of year rush – get those brownie points in early (and before they go Christmas shopping) by booking in a brand new lawn to revitalise your yard and provide a complete facelift for your garden area. Wild horse Turf is locally owned by Dean and Amanda Smyth who have been providing quality turf for the last nine years. Located at Glass House Mountains, they supply a range of quality domestic, commercial and recreational turf. Dean is always happy to discuss the conditions at your place and offer guidance as to the best grass to suit your individual needs. The secret to great grass is personal service. When you phone Wild Horse Turf, you'll speak to the person who will harvest your grass. Dean will listen to your requirements, and offer a tailor made solution to provide the lawn of your dreams. You'll get great back-up service and

ongoing advice for maintaining your lawn, long after you've laid it. Wild Horse Turf are confident that customers are getting the best quality turf available as they grow it themselves. Turf begins to deteriorate from the moment it’s harvested, so limiting the time from the paddock to your yard is a great way to give your lawn the best start. When you buy turf off the pallet at a hardware store or landscape supply shop, you risk buying turf that has been declining in freshness and quality - which affects the long term viability of your lawn. Wild Horse Turf will cut your turf to order ensuring the freshest grass that will establish in your new backyard faster. They supply and lay Sapphire Soft-leaf Buffalo, Empire Zoysia, Tropkia and Wintergreen Couch. If you are after a low maintenance option then consider Empire Zoysia which requires about a third of the mowing required by the other varieties and also has a degree of resistance to lawn grubs. Wild Horse Turf also offers a comprehensive laying service which includes the application of

water crystals and fertiliser before the turf is laid. For complete confidence and to ensure the highest quality, both the Empire Zoysia and Sapphire Soft-leaf Buffalo are grown in certified paddocks. Wild Horse Turf’s harvesting process uses people not automatic machines. This allows a hands-on approach to quality control, and lets the staff keep a close eye on each and every slab. In short, you’ll get a more consistent turf and a flatter, better-looking end result. If you need help to work out how much turf you may require, jump online at www.wildhorseturf.com and use their turf calculator to get an idea of what you may need. Get your home set for summer

Summer (and then Christmas) is less than two months away – meaning that friends will be dropping over for lazy barbeques, the relations will be coming to stay, and you’ll be looking to spend quality time with your family. Take a look around … are there lots of jobs you need to get started / get finished / get sorted? The yard and gardens need tidying up, carpets need a good cleaning, the spare bedroom needs repainting, the front steps need retiling, the gutters are blocked, the pool is looking murky, the front fence has fallen over, the outdoor furniture needs a facelift ... the list goes on and on. If you’ve got the spare time and some basic understanding of what you’re doing, you can get a lot of these jobs done yourself. There are some really great resources on-line which you can access for free to explain and show you how to do whatever it is that you need done. Surprisingly, YouTube can be a source of fantastic information. People have made instructional videos on just about everything you can imagine. However, take care if they are made in another country, as some of the equipment, rules and regulations are very different to those in Australia. The Beerwah Library has a large range of DIY books which you can borrow and study up on. Take a look at their on-line catalogue to see what’s available. Make sure you research any relevant Council rules which may be applicable. What size garden shed needs Council approval? How high can you build a fence? And if you need advice on hiring equipment, make sure you contact R & R Hire. So with not many weekends until those Christmas guests will be arriving – you had better get started now!

When experts are required

You’ve seen them do it on TV. It doesn’t look that hard, and you were pretty handy in woodwork at high school. You’ve got a saw, a drill and a paint roller somewhere in the shed. Redoing the bathroom can’t be that hard … can it? It is understandable that people want to freshen up their home with a few DIY projects, hoping to revamp the house and yard without breaking the bank. However, there are some circumstances where paying for a professional can save you time and money in the long run … and the old saying ‘you get what you pay for’ rings true. Experts caution DIY’ers to be realistic about their skills, abilities and how much time they have available. According to surveys, 60% of adults rate their DIY skills as very good. Yet 25% of people admit to experiencing a DIY disaster, and 51% of people have at least one unfinished DIY project lingering in their home. Our professional trades people say that a lot of their work is fixing up what DIY’ers have tried to start. This usually ends up costing more money and taking more time than if the tradie was asked to do it to in the first place. Worse still, a novice renovator could end up with a serious injury if something goes wrong. So before you get your Bob the Builder tool belt on, ask yourself these three questions: 1. What experience do I have? Just because you’re not afraid to take something on, doesn’t mean you have to. 2. Do I really have the time to get it all finished? Think of the inconvenience of a job taking three weeks instead of three days. 3. Do I have the right tools? If you have to buy something that you’ll most likely only use once – it’s probably not worth it. Supporting our local trades and services means that you are helping keep local people employed, which in turn keeps our local economy turning over. Lifecycle of a DIY project 1. Inspiration – you spot a project in a magazine and think ‘my bedroom will look like that.’ 2. Optimism – you buy all the tools and begin your project with confidence and enthusiasm. 3. Confusion – you’re not too sure about what you’re doing, but you do it anyway. 4. Despair – it’s all gone wrong! 5. Resignation – you accept defeat. It’s time to seek professional help.

Is your home ready for summer?

With the warmer months upon us and dare we mention it - Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to start preparing your home for summer. Security doors and flyscreens may need repair or replacement and areas that you don’t have screened may need a new solution. Ever popular are screened enclosures which add extra living space by allowing you to open your home to your outdoor area, letting in the breezes without compromising security. Also popular are outdoor and external awnings. Custom made awnings are the perfect solution for keeping your home cool in summer. By reducing the heat reaching your windows, you can significantly reduce the temperature inside your home as well as keeping your cooling costs down. There are so many new and innovative products available in the external range that will compliment and add value to your home. Standard Automatic Roll Up awnings are easy to use and simple in design; this versatile and attractive awning is an excellent choice for ground floor windows for privacy and heat protection. Easy function, self-locking arms enable simple shade adjustment, and when the sun goes down, the awning can be rolled away neatly into a head box. Side channel awnings are perfect for decks and verandahs for privacy and weather protection. Custom made to suit your needs, straight drop awnings maximise your outdoor areas all year round, without creating a visual barrier. Aluminium Louvre Awnings are an ideal way to control privacy whilst at the same time not obstructing air flow or the view. Aluminium Louvre blades reflect up to 90% of the heat normally transmitted through a window. To find out which solution will benefit you this summer, arrange a free consultation from Custom Curtains and Shade on 5494 6898 or visit their new showroom at Turner Park Shopping Centre, Peachester Road, Beerwah.
