While in the process of renovating our 1980’s Italian built house we have worked hard to keep the character and individual style, but with a modern twist. When we looked at the kitchen I knew exactly who we would call – the go-to man. Having known Kev for 20 years I was in no doubt he would listen and make our dream kitchen happen. From locking in a timeframe to suit our busy lives, to re-using existing glass panels to ensure the flow through to the dining room, Kev and his team ticked all the boxes. The pop-up electrical points in the island bench is a personal favourite gadget – thanks Kev!

Professional renovations by QKB Distributors Queensland Kitchen & Bathroom Distributors and Reno-VateIT Cabinets are the same business; and we have been trading in Beerwah since 2006. Robert Turner as director of both businesses has been cabinetmaking and building for 26 years. We have had some changes over the past two years, including the change to our business trading name from Reno-VateIT Cabinets to Queensland Kitchen & Bathroom Distributors to correspond with our website www.qkb.net.au Other changes to the business saw the retirement of Jeff, hanging up the boots after 50 years in the building trade. QKB today is predominantly a renovation specialty company. Our online store allows our clients to shop from home, relieving the pressures of today's busy world. Our cabinetmaking shop specialises in kitchen, bathroom, laundry or office renovations. We also make and install wardrobe fit-outs. QKB Stone make and install Natura stone tops and splash backs in our Beerwah workshop. We’re excited to have also now joined with Pressed Tin Panels from Bathurst, New South Wales to supply and install kitchen splash backs, bathroom wall panels, ceiling panels or home feature wall panelling. WE CLEAN WATER TANKS

Do it right with Brush Right Painting!

Healthy Water… Healthy Life! Pristine Water Systems offers a wide range of water purification products and replacement filters / cartridges for homes, boats, caravans and restaurants etc. Our body relies on clean, pure water for general good health and well-being. It’s as important as the quality of air that we breathe. The fact is however that the water we drink from our kitchen taps is not always 100% water at all – it can also contain a weak solution of the chemicals that are added to make it “safe” to drink. Chlorine and chloramine additions are necessary to control bacteria levels in drinking water. These chemicals should be likened to the lunch wrap that is used to protect our sandwiches. Whilst it is beneficial in keeping the sandwiches clean, it should definitely be removed before the sandwiches are eaten. The good news is that there is a solution. Good quality drinking water filters / purifiers effectively “unwrap” the water that we consume – for both drinking, food preparation and cooking. So whether you rely on town or tank water, Simon or Allen can assist you to make the best informed decision on what’s available to make your water the purest for you and your family. Glass House Mountains We were looking for someone to both prep and paint our two storey home, so we shopped and priced around, and were very happy to find Davie from Brush Right Painting. It was great that we could support a local, and he was also very easy to work with. We had full trust in him working around our family home – the overall transformation is outstanding! We would definitely get him back for any future work, and highly recommend if you are thinking of contacting a painter please give him a call, you won’t regret it!

Leave the stress to the experts For most of us the idea of renovating our homes sounds a little daunting, particular when it includes modifying or installing totally new kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and robes. However there is no need to stress, as Kev's Joinery and Shopfitters at Beerwah are confident they will be able to work with you to turn your ideas into reality. Kev has over 40 years in the industry and more than 15 years manufacturing in Biondi Crescent (near the Beerwah Golf Club). Kev and his team have transformed the homes of many locals, who are keen to vouch for the quality of the work, professional service and overall results. Over the years Kev’s team have taken on hundreds of individual projects, including major shop fitouts such as the Monty’s at Montville and the latest brand new florist ‘Ivy Lane’ at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, right through to one-off cabinets. While they love a big project to get their teeth into, they are also happy to do the smaller jobs as well. When Kev meets his new clients the first thing he likes to do is listen to their ideas and concerns and then, with the knowledge and experience gained over his lifetime in the industry, he can generally provide plenty of ideas and suggestions that the clients may not be aware are available. Quite a few years ago Kev became aware that many of his clients valued being able to shop locally, however they assumed that they would have to travel outside of the area to purchase the electrical and white goods that would be required for the project. This is not the case. Along with offering the complete joinery service, Kev is also able to source all your electrical appliances and white goods at a great price. With an attention to detail which is second to none, Kev and his team strive to offer a personalised service and always go that extra mile for their clients. If you would like some expert help and advice with your next home project, please give Kev and his team a call on 5494 6500.

HOME & Garden Gardening ideas made easy With some good rains finally here, our attention is able to turn back to rehabilitating our garden landscapes. It doesn’t hurt every now and again to rethink just what it is you want from your gardens. Is the layout suitable for your lifestyle now? Are the plants suffering from increased shade or changes in drainage? Have plants outgrown their spaces or their attractive lifespans?

maleny

So many decisions and options. Wouldn’t it be helpful if you could take inspiration from what others have already developed and established. Never fear, your solution is here … the Gardening on the Edge event in June. Organised by the Maleny Garden Club, the Gardening on the Edge weekend (June 10 and 11) sees six gardens across the Maleny region opened for inspection. The gardens are selected not because they are magazine-like glamorous rambling estates (although some are); they are selected due to their variety, use of design, clever use of plants and features, ease of care, suitability to the local conditions, and general attractiveness and appeal.

They are both smaller urban and larger rural-style gardens. The beauty is that we other gardeners have a chance to wander about, take photos, see how plants perform, see how they respond to different situations and speak with the garden owners. Not only are you able to gain huge inspiration from the gardens, but you can take away practical ideas which can be used in your garden projects. Things like: • planting combinations for both looks and companion planting • encouraging wildlife into your garden • introducing hard structures into the garden – like paths, gazebos, edging and walls • productive gardening • garden design to withstand kids or pets, and • how to fill those troublesome shady spaces. Between now and June, GC&M News will preview a couple of the Gardening on the Edge open gardens to whet your appetite. But in the meantime, we’ve included a couple of photos from gardens featured last year.

Bush food banter with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery

Celebrating native ingredients Davidson plum

Davidson plums, also called ‘ooray’, are one of my favourite bushfoods. They grow on a Dr Seuss-like tree of dark purple fruit sprouting in grape-like clusters from its narrow, straight trunk. There are four varieties of Davidson plum which grows from the far tropical north of Australia to northern New South Wales. The two commercially cultivated varieties are Davidsonia pruriens and Davidsonia jerseyana. These beautiful rainforest trees are very ornamental with outstanding leaves – growing up to 1m in length, pinnately divided with prominently toothed leaflets. Small pink flowers in Spring occur in long sprays on the trunk of the tree and are followed by bunches of purple plums. Harvesting Davidson plums requires no effort – the fruit simply fall when ripe. The dark fruit are high in acid and contain 100 times more vitamin C than found in oranges and also contain lutein, a compound that plays an important role in eye health, along with magnesium, zinc, calcium, potassium and manganese. The plums are 3 - 6cm across and contain one or two flat seeds. To prepare for cooking, cut in half and remove seeds. The skin is edible and the deep red flesh is delicious when cooked into jams, syrups, chutneys and sauces. Dried plums are also stunning. Here’s an easy recipe to enjoy your Davidson plums.

Davidson plum jam Ingredients 700g Davidson plums 700g sugar 1 lemon, juiced ½ vanilla pod, cut in half lengthways Instructions Start off by washing your plums and then cutting them in half and removing the two seeds in the middle. Place them into a non reactive pot. Weigh the plums and add equal parts sugar. 500g of plums equals 500g sugar, etc. Add the lemon juice and vanilla pod and heat the mixture over a moderate heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a light rolling boil and allow to simmer for an hour or until the mixture has slightly thickened. Test the mixture by putting a small amount on a saucer and place in the freezer for a minute to see if it sets. Once the mixture is ready, pour out into to jars. Put the lids on immediately and allow to cool before storing. Davidson plum and chilli jam – To turn into a savoury jam, add two star anise, ½ ts ground ginger and 5 small chillies.

Would you like to know more about some unusual and little known plants? The event will be to be held at Forest Heart Nursery, 20 Coral Street, Maleny on Saturday, April 1 from 10.00am. Cost is only $15.00 per person and includes morning tea. Bookings are David with one of the essential. Please email nursery@forestheart.com. n itte books he has wr au or phone 5435 2193.

Plant of the Month

Grass Trigger Plant

Stylidium graminifolium This delightful little plant can be seen flowering in moist sandy or rocky areas of the Glass House Mountains area, but is also common in other states and as far as the north of this state. A hardy species, Trigger plant will happily grow in full sun or shade, and due to the small size is suitable for most home gardens. The leaves form a grass-like rosette at the base of the plant which may not be obvious in the natural habitat until spring, when the slender spikes of pink orchidlike flowers appear. The name ‘Trigger Plant’ derives from the interesting process of pollination. Insects visiting the flowers stimulate a ‘trigger’ on the plants which springs up hitting the insects and releasing pollen onto them! What a clever way of ensuring species survival! Growing to a maximum height of 80cm even when in flower, Trigger plants are suitable for growing in containers. The GMAN nursery has good supplies of this attractive plant.
