hen the Rotary Club of Maleny invited me along to see them turn pumpkins into petrol I have to admit I was a bit sceptical of how this was going to happen.

I remember from my childhood that Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother turned a pumpkin into a carriage to transport her to the ball. So I figured that the Rotary President had a magic wand that he used – and who can turn down an invitation to a magic show?

Alas I was definitely on the wrong path, the transition from vegetable to fuel was done in a more traditional way, by turning the pumpkin into soup, then selling the soup to raise funds, then the funds were handed over to purchase fuel for the Blackall Range Care Group, District Nurse. So while there may not have been a magical element to the process, it was definitely a great example of the kindness that runs through our community.

It is great to see generous locals taking the time out to make the soup and hungry locals at the Maleny Show purchasing and enjoying it.

Rotary are just one of the many groups that extend the hand of support in our community and it is always heart-warming to see Regards, the end results (oh and to enjoy the soup along the way).

Local News Turning pumpkins into petrol

When Maleny locals receive a visit from the Blackall Range Care Group, District Nurse, they have the Rotary Club of Maleny’s pumpkin soup to thank for helping to run the nurse's vehicle.

No, Rotary haven’t invented a new type of ecofuel made from the humble vegetable, however they have used the sale of their pumpkin soup at events like the Maleny Show to help raise the required funds.

Last week Rotary members were pleased to be able to show their support of the great work that Blackall Range Care undertake in our community by presenting them with a cheque for $2,000.00 which will be followed up by donations of $1.500.00 over the next two years.

President of the Blackall Range Care Group Ann Koenig said they are really pleased to receive the funds and knowing that the arrangement will continue for three years definitely assists them in their planning.

“We live in a very generous community and receive a lot of support locally which we really appreciate,” Ann said.

At the presentation, Rotary member Rick Townsend explained the complex formula required to work out the transformation of pumpkin soup into community support.

To take advantage of the slump in civil engineering with the slow-down of the mining sector, the Federal Government has brought forward the funding for the upgrade of the Bruce Highway and the Caloundra and Sippy Downs intersections.

Consequently, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads have revised their plans, time frames and project information.

The $1.134 billion development is anticipated to commence in 2016 and will be delivered as one massive construction package.

Along with the benefits of more efficient traffic management and improved road safety, the project will bring.

A number of major issues and drawbacks – including loss of direct access for local Glenview and Palmview businesses and residents and the loss of high value native habitat. These issues have been raised previously and appear not to have been given serious consideration in the released revised plans.

All concerned would agree that there is a need to get the planning spot on to ensure a balance between enhancing the benefits and minimising the impacts.

But with the time frame being dramatically brought forward, there is now limited time for locals to make their views known to Main Roads and our elected representatives.

Although the Steve Irwin Way / Caloundra Road intersection road layout has been scaled back, meaning less State Forest will need to be cleared, the footprint still impacts on a significant part of

the forest behind the Mooloolah Cemetery where protected and endangered flora and fauna can be found.

Businesses at the Aussie World complex will still lose their direct highway accesses, which they have planned their business developments around.

Local Palmview and Glenview residents will also lose their direct highway accesses, adding many kilometres onto trips to schools, shops and work.

Palmview residents on the eastern side of the highway will only have one entrance / exit point, meaning that if an accident occurs they will be cut off with no alternate route into or out of their homes – along with no access for emergency services.

One continuing problem for locals has been the lack of genuine information and dialogue that Main Roads engineers have been willing to provide.

Apart from the limited information available on the Main Roads website (www.tmr.qld.gov.au – then search for ‘Bruce Highway—Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway upgrade project’) little is known as to why alternative options have not been considered.

To link with other locals and to be more informed, you can join the facebook pages dedicated to protecting the forest (Save the Iconic Forest at the North End of Steve Irwin Way) or one trying to keep the highway on and off ramps open (Save Exit 190).

Road information session disappoints Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough held an information session last Thursday evening at Daisy’s Place, Glenview to inform locals of the new Bruce Highway road upgrade plans.

Mal’s staff were recording questions which would be presented to Main Roads, but that was of little comfort to many of those taking the time to attend with the intention of finding answers.

Despite this, Mal was happy with the proceedings.

“Thank you to all the residents and business owners who attended the information session,” exclaimed Mal. “This upgrade is very important to address safety issues, reduce congestion and future proof that section of the highway,” he said.

“It was very obvious that there are a lot of questions out there in the community about the project and I want to work with residents to ensure that those questions are answered.”

Although over 140 people flowed through the doors to view the maps, read the documents and speak with Mal and his staff, many left feeling disappointed.

Hoping to hear a presentation on the plans and to be able to speak with Department of Transport and Main Roads representatives, attendees came away with a miniaturised A4 map of the plans accompanied by some text copied from Main Roads and Mal Brough’s business card.

There was one large map on a table around which people tried to jostle for a view.

“We will coordinate questions to and from Main Roads and keep the community informed of responses,” said Mal.

The Development Applications for the proposal

by NBN to use microwave towers at Bald Knob is now into the Notification phase. Signs have been placed on the site and objections to the scheme have to be lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council by August 7.

On behalf of the Maleny & Hinterlands Towerless NBN Group, we ask that all people who oppose the concept of broadband by use of microwave towers in our area to send in an objection.

To assist, the group have draft sample objections available for use as a basis for objections.

The Maleny & Hinterlands Towerless NBN Group says that the main objections to be raised with the council include: • Proposal does not meet the Acceptable Outcomes as set out in the council’s Telecommunication Facility Code (TFC) • About 30 houses are within the 400 metre TFC exclusion zone • Proposal does not provide evidence of any environmental studies on flora and fauna

• Proposal does not meet other parts of the Council’s Planning Scheme – Scenic Amenity overlays • Proposal does not set out the total microwave radiation already emanating from the equipment already there on four very large towers • Proposals are just part of a much larger scheme for our area. More tower proposals will soon come. Hit the new trail at Maleny A special attraction for Maleny was officially opened last week, giving residents and visitors the chance to get up-close to one of the Sunshine Coast’s most scenic areas.

Mayor Mark Jamieson, Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell combined to cut the ribbon on the Maleny Trail, incorporating the Riverside Boardwalk and Reynolds Circuit Boardwalk, which allows walkers better access to enjoy the rolling hills of the Hinterland town, Obi Obi Creek, and the township itself.

The 4.8km trail and boardwalks form part of the Maleny Community Precinct plan which was endorsed by council in 2010 to create a place for the whole community to enjoy. The trails overview plan was completed a year later.

The Southern Wetland Crossing and Heritage Trail from Fairview to Bails were the first parts of the project to be completed.

Thanks to successful negotiations with the Riverside Centre and the Katsaras family, the Riverside Boardwalk in the town of Maleny was completed earlier this year and the Reynolds Boardwalk circuit, adjacent to the newly opened golf course, was the latest stage to be finished in May. Many parts of the trail to Maleny, which finishes near the showgrounds, are a work in progress and will be completed as funding becomes available.

This includes roadworks at Parkway Drive which, when completed, will offer an alternative pathway to the Maleny township.

Bardic gathering

Contributed by Yvonne Hortin What is a Bard? Bards deliver the magical art of storytelling, poetry, plays and song. The Druid Bard of ancient times spent 12 years learning the art and the stories were orally passed down with the word never written.

They depicted events and special times and the Bards were greatly respected. Today’s Bard is similar but now their word is written.

They are storytellers, poets, playwrights or songwriters who enjoy delivering their art to a receptive audience. Bards tell stories of the land, our ancestors, places, animals, families and events. Why not come along and listen for yourself.

On the first Saturday of each month between 10.30am and 12.30pm, listen to present day Bards share their art. Hear the works of others come alive with the magic of voice and presentation.

We meet at The Sacred Tree Cafe, 19 Caloundra Road, Landsborough. No monetary fees involved just lots of fun and enjoyment.

Menshed supporting the next generations Contributed by Bob McLean We all know how important it is for the whole society to contribute to the education of the next generation. That is what the Glasshouse Country Menshed has been doing over recent weeks.

Ian Williams, a local music teacher, sent a request to see if the men could build a Uki Trolley to store some Ukuleles, that could also be mobile, to move between class rooms.

Ian sent a draft drawing, the men sorted through the stockpile of pre-loved timber and before long the trolley was presented to the Beerburrum State School at their Monday assembly. The Uki's were then set in their new home.

The students were very happy to accept the gift from the Menshed, are looking forward to their ukulele lessons, and are appreciative of having such a great storage unit.

The men are also half way through another project requested by the Beerwah Kindergarten, rebuilding wooden building blocks.

There are about 40 blocks around 40cm x 20cm x 10cm, these are substantial enough for the children to let their imagination go wild to develop some building skills.

The men are also working on the completion of a clean work area within the shed where the leather work team are working at present.

They will soon be joined by the new kitchenette surrounded by wall mounted benches to accommodate computer and art groups.

The intention is for these activities to take place on days other than our normal Wednesday morning.

Link from Landsborough and Tanna

Contributed by Kylie Merola When Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Pam tore through Vanuatu in March, the island of Tanna suffered widespread destruction.

An island normally lush and green, was stripped bare. The houses, villages and schools were gone - flattened by Cyclone Pam. However, the people remain trying to rebuild their lives.

Many visitors from Australia have been helping with the rebuild project, including the Pryde family of Beerwah.

Cassie and Jono Pryde, along with their three children, Madison, Eli and Lara, made the journey to Tanna Island to lend a hand.

Madison Pryde, who is a Year 5 student at Landsborough State School, wrote the following article about her experience: ‘Recently my family and I had the privilege of travelling over to Tanna Island, in Vanuatu, to help run a camp for children at Kapalpal School.

It was an amazing experience to interact with such a happy group of people and to see how they live with so little. Some of the children walk for two hours to get to school, with no food for the day and most don’t have enough clothing to keep warm.

Earlier this year, Landsborough State School purchased a set of new athletics shirts so it was decided that we would donate the old shirts to the students of Kapalpal School. It was wonderful to see the faces of the students at Kapalpal School when they were each given a shirt. They wore them everywhere and were so grateful for this unexpected gift.

The whole experience has really made me appreciate the equipment, comforts, technologies and teachers I have here at Landsborough State School.

Kapalpal School wanted me to pass on a big thank you to Landsborough State School for their generosity and kindness.’

Beerwah composer’s Choral Mass

When Jennifer M Carr requested the Sunshine Coast Choral Society premier her a cappella ‘A Choral Mass’ last July, there was a buzz of anticipation.

Music Director Adrian King was given a copy to examine and the Music Committee sang it through while Adrian played the piano, and the decision was made: it was to be part of a concert with works by Rutter, Bruckner and Tavener to be performed on August 9 at the Lake Kawana Community Centre from 2.30pm.

The concert will be perhaps the most challenging presented by the choir, as members appreciate the responsibility of presenting a work, to an audience for the first time.

Born and educated in Scotland, Jenny graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, to commence her teaching career in Dundee in 1970.

Four years later she arrived in Brisbane to experience the worst floods on record. She was posted to Townsville and remained there for 36 years.

During that time she started jotting down some little tunes and songs as there was a shortage of resources in schools at that time.

This writing developed into compositions for young string orchestra and primary school choirs. Over the years, she completed many student works and arrangements and in 2008, commenced work on her Choral Mass. This work in progress was completed in 2013.

The second part of the concert will be ‘Magnificat’ by Jon Rutter, with Brisbane - based soprano Lauren Lodge-Campbell and accompanist Natasha Koch.

Conductor Adrian King has put together this program of works from the 19th, 20th and 21st century choral repertoire.

Audience members will have an opportunity to meet both Jennifer and conductor Adrian King before the concert. The session will take place an hour before the concert at 1.30pm.

The composer and conductor will be discussing the processes of composition and the preparation involved in premiering a work for Sunshine Coast audiences.

The Landsborough Masonic Lodge are happy to report that Beerwah Recycle Market patrons will once again be able to support their charity fundraising sausage sizzle each Saturday fortnight.

Lodge member Bob O’Conor expressed his pleasure that council came to the party.

“After some misunderstanding, council has recommitted their support for our fundraising sausage sizzle,” said Bob. “We’ve worked with the new contractor – who is more than happy for us to continue – and can let all our hungry regulars know that we’ll be back behind the barbecue on Saturday, August 1.”

The fortnightly sausage sizzle raised $2,300 last year, all of which was donated back into local community groups.

And as all the barbecue products – the sausages, the bread, the onions and the sauces – are bought locally, the Masonic Lodge efforts put money back through the cash registers of local businesses.

Bob hopes to see you all from 8.30am on Saturday morning.

Glass House Mountains Rotary

Contributed by George McKenzie Rotarians do have fun – even in jail. Some time ago, Rotary members, partners and friends travelled to Boggo Road jail for a tour of the complex.

Boggo Road jail was named because of the boggy roads; apparently the jail was built on a swamp. The jail opened in 1883 and closed in 2002 after 119 years in operation. It is now heritage listed so will never be demolished.

Rotary members cooked a barbecue for Joann Gripske and Wendy Ward (Boobs on Bikes) who were raising money for the Cancer Council and they did a marvellous job organising the event, with about 180 people attending.

This event was held at the Glasshouse Sports Club. All money raised (over $2,000) went to the Cancer Council.

Members from Glasshouse Rotary Club and Woombye Rotary Club had a very pleasant tour of Glasshouse Gourmet Snails at Glass House Mountains owned by Cliff and Mary. These snails are supplied to South Australia and also Brisbane.

In the month of May, Rotary clubs in District 9600 (which includes Glasshouse Rotary) conducted their annual Bowel Scan Project. All kits in the Glasshouse area were sold, and a total of about 2,304 kits were sold over the Sunshine Coast area. This is a good result as it can save people's lives with early detection. Many thanks to Beerwah, Glass House and Mooloolah pharmacies for supporting us in this project once again.

Bruce Highway Information Session

The size of the crowd was a clear indication of the interest in the project and it was great to be able to discuss the revised maps and give the opportunity for residents and business owners to ask questions.

News from Parliament

It is pretty safe to say that this year’s budget was disappointing with no money being allocated for any new local projects and certainly no funding for big infrastructure items like the North Coast Rail Duplication. My job now as the local Member is to continue to fight for the North Coast Rail Duplication project and many others in the Glass House electorate. I have started my ‘Fighting for Glass House’ campaign and you can see the announcements made to date by visiting my website. While on my site you can also see my Budget Reply speech from July 16 where I talk about the local implications of this budget and relate stories from constituents in Glass House.

It was also a great pleasure during the Budget sitting week to pledge my support to our local firies as we proudly introduced the Protecting Firefighters Bill to Parliament.

The #LNP's Presumptive Firefighters Bill will ensure that if any full-time, auxiliary and volunteer firefighters in Queensland contracts one of 12 specified cancers, they will be covered.

These changes will provide the highest level of support in the country.

Out and About

You would have seen me popping up all over the place with my mobile offices in recent weeks.

I visited Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum and Beerwah where I chatted to locals about issues important to them. Matters such as roads, vegetation and also the future construction of the Reed Street traffic lights were among the topics covered.

At this stage I can advise that TMR are on track to start construction by the end of the year and I know we all eagerly anticipate the commencement.

While out and about I also dropped into the Glasshouse Men’s Shed where I combined morning tea with a chat about some of their road access concerns.

Have your say on proposed changes to smoking laws In the last Parliament sitting week I tabled a Bill that seeks to ban smokers from lighting up within five metres of Queensland Government buildings and certain public areas, and to prohibit the sale of cigarettes at ‘pop-up’ shops.

The five metre ban would also apply to public transport waiting points, pedestrian malls, swimming pools and skate parks.

School News Students marvel over Mapleton camp!

At the end of term two Mooloolah State School students from Years 5 and 6 were super excited to leave school work behind and get on the fast travelling bus to Mapleton camp. They were blown away with the facilities and activities that they participated in during their week at camp!

They overcame many fears and showed resilience when they had to engage in new and exciting activities such as abseiling, the flying fox, giant swing, canoeing, rock climbing and archery. They couldn’t believe how lucky they were that the facility, service and food were amazing or as the kids would say, “absolutely awesome!”

The children engaged in team work and team building all while supporting each other through the hair raising adventures for the duration of the camp. All the students had an incredible and unforgettable time, with great experiences, claiming that they didn’t want the week away to end!

Beerwah High addresses cybersafety issues On Wednesday, July 15, the hot topic of Cybersafety and Cyberbullying was tackled with a Community Conversation being held at Beerwah State High School.

Internet safety expert and former QPS Detective, Brett Lee, spent the afternoon speaking with high school staff on the impact social media is having on today’s teens.

He supports schools and families working together to deal with the very real issues encountered by teens using the range of social media platforms available to them.

Brett was later a guest speaker at a Community Conversation held with parents, staff and interested community members.

Facilitated by Ana Greenhill, Hinterland Community Development Worker, it was a valuable opportunity for open discussion around social media and cybersafety issues.

The small number of parents who attended the event found it to be an excellent opportunity to discuss helpful strategies, ask questions and hear from an expert in the field.

For further information on helping your teen use social media safely, keep an eye on the school website for resources and updates.

To keep communication channels open, the school plans on running future events like this, so watch this space!

Peachester School hosts the Hoggs

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C Recently Peachester School hosted morning tea for the Sunshine Coast Harley Davidson Club again. Fifty five riders roared up to the school at 10.00am Sunday looking for some warm tea/ coffee, pumpkin soup and homemade delights; warm, savoury and sweet.

The Peachester mums and dads never disappoint and for $10.00 a head each club member feasted on a spread of food fit for a king and cheered those who won the door prizes.

The P&C raised $480.00 that morning which will contribute to the new Seniors Playground.

The Harley club are regular supporters of Peachester School P&C and highly recommend us as a great stop over for any auto / bike club planning to drive our scenic hinterland route.

Family Health Kaz Thomas-Roby from Soulqi continued her learning at a recent class with internationally known Sensei Stephen Birch.

Living - History Peachester Hall Fundraiser Contributed by Helen Page An entertaining night out is planned for Peachester on Saturday night, August 8. ‘Dinner and a Show’ starring the Woodford Singers will be hosted by the Hall Trustees and Peachester History Committee, with all proceeds going to support hall funds.

The Peachester Hall has been at the centre of community life since the original School of Arts was established by local pioneers in 1889.

Concerts, balls, meetings, luncheons, weddings, church services and school classes - every type of community gathering took place in that early hall. Eventually falling into disrepair, it was rebuilt and enlarged in 1947. With several later additions, the current hall is now the gathering place for a much larger and more diverse district.

The Hall Trustees are proud of the fact that the Peachester Hall is one of the most well-used halls in the Sunshine Coast region, and this is partly because rent charges have been kept at a moderate level so the hall is accessible to everyone.

In the past year, 14 different groups and many local residents have used the hall for regular community activities and family functions.

However the costs of maintaining and running a public hall are constantly increasing, with insurance dominating the budget, more than doubling over the last three years.

Come along to ‘Dinner and a Show’ and help raise funds to keep the hall in good condition and available to the whole community.

Group bookings are welcome, and numbers need to be finalised by Wednesday, August 5.

Seeking your stories Members of the Woodford Historical Society recently celebrated their success in gaining a community grant for a new computer for the Museum. The RADF grant is for researching and the collection of information and stories from the Woodford / Durundur area, since the Archer brothers settled in 1841, to the present.

They are keen to find people with stories and photos of sawmills, bullockies and the people from Woodford’s history of sawmilling.

Researcher, Donna Grigor said that a lot of the family names in the history books of sawmillers and bullock teamsters have descendants all over the country. Secretary of the Historical Society, Shirley Wallis said that the memories people have of the sawmills are not in any written form.

Friends of Bankfoot House In October 2002 a unique medal for Jack Ferris was received by the Ferris family. This was the Centenary Medal, which commemorated the centenary of federation and was established by the Australian Government as part of the system of honours and awards.

Inscribed on one side of the medal are the words, ‘For contribution made to Australian society’, with the name John Charles Ferris engraved in the centre.

Unfortunately the medal arrived on the day of Jack’s funeral, so he was never to know that he was being honoured in this way.

Jack was one of a select group of people who received the Centenary Medal. Australian citizens born on or before December 31, 1901 and still alive on January 1, 2001 were eligible to receive the Medal. Jack’s life spanned these two dates – he was born on June 8, 1901 and died on October 6, 2002.

The medal shows the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star, representing the six Australian states becoming one, the Star being a major element of the Australian national flag. At the centre of the Star is an indigenous styling of Aboriginal traditions at the heart of the continent surrounded by the words Centenary of Federation 1901-2001. The medal, a miniature and a tie pin nestle in a navy leather case in a large box which also contains the citation stating that Queen Elizabeth awarded the medal to Jack. The document is signed by Governor General Peter Hollingworth and Prime Minister John Howard. The box is safely stored in the Mary Grigor Centre, still to be there in another 100 years to grab the attention of future generations.

The ladies held their AGM and their International Day Celebration last Wednesday at the Maleny Uniting Church with the focus of their study being the English Midlands.

Bruce Highway interchange design

On July 23, I attended Mal Brough’s information evening on the planned Bruce Highway interchange design as a member of the Save Steve Irwin Way Forest group.

Thanks to Sue from Daisy’s Place, Mal and the TMR representatives who shared their evening with us.

It became clear during the course of the evening that this design, which each local candidate at the recent State election branded as ‘dumb’, is going to happen.

Recent tweaks have only made the design worse.

I conducted a straw poll of attendees - no one liked the design.

TMR have previously chosen their words very carefully, having told us that they’d ‘optioneered’ this design to death. They determined that it is just not possible to build the Caloundra Road section without a roundabout on Steve Irwin Way, thus putting the road through the forest and making access to the Aussie World businesses much more difficult. The excuses were vague, such as ‘it may cost too much’, ‘site constraints’ etc.

But last night when I asked TMR representatives exactly how much extra it would actually cost to avoid these impacts, I was told they have never even considered an option that does not involve destroying the northern end of the forest.

Now after years of ‘planning’, TMR are going to flick the problem to construction contractors, assuring us that the contractors may be able to come up with a better design.

Four years of construction chaos, dying businesses and forest destruction to achieve a ‘dumb’ road design? Surely we can do better than this!

Looking back – looking forward

After nearly four years as Director and CEO of the Maleny Credit Union, Terry Scolari stepped down on July 10 this year. This week he took time out to look back at the four years – and forward to the future of the Credit Union.

What was really important to members when you took on the role?

‘Vote No’ … that’s what members were saying.

Four years ago, members of the Maleny Credit Union voted overwhelmingly against a merger with Credit Union Australia. The clear message then was ‘We are unique and individual’ and that message still stands.

The 2011 AGM saw four directors on the board of the Credit Union. I was one of them.

I remember the next few days and weeks clearly. We met and gathered new directors from our contacts in the local community. Some stayed on whilst some filled a temporary gap and moved on.

The ensuing four years seemed to rush past. On the whole, they were productive and successful.

Regaining our great local reputation was forefront on our minds. Looking back, I believe that members and staff did a great job in achieving this.

What do you see as MCU’s biggest achievements in the past four years?

The financials are now the envy of others in the Mutual community (Mutual is just an up-todate meaning for an entity that has co-operative values and structure).

Personally I think the biggest achievement for the Credit Union over the past four years is the way it has broadened its footprint in the local community. It’s extended its reach to the sporting and business end of town, schools and our wider demographic.

We have strengthened our working relationships with the peak sporting body in Maleny - the Maleny and District Sporting & Recreation Club (MDSRC).

Strong working relationships have been forged with local businesses and continue to support the major service and recreation clubs.

Looking for help

I am in the process of writing the history of the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall and would like to put the call out for locals or former locals who may be able to share their memories with me in this task.

'Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall was erected in memory of those who served in World War One. A stump capping ceremony was held on the 24th November 1923 by Mr Warren M.L.A who stated he appreciated the fact that Landsborough was moving in the matter of erecting a Soldiers Memorial and the numbers there that day and the nature of the function showed that the committee meant business.

The official opening of the hall took place on the 4th May 1924 which was attended by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan.

A grand procession was held from the railway station to the hall.’

The hall has been in constant use since the day it was opened, always has been and continues to be an integral part of this Community and in 2024 will celebrate its Centenary.

Playing a big part in the MDSRC ‘Come and Try’ Sports day on the long weekend in January this year.

The creation of a Financial Literacy Program in partnership with Maleny High School.

For me, it’s been a productive, often hectic but thoroughly enjoyable four years.

Much has been achieved – however there is so much still to do at your local credit union.

Where would you like to see MCU heading in the future?

I would like to see greater support for our local community, businesses, environmental and sporting groups. As well as new initiatives in the Crowd Sourcing of local initiatives and supporting the development of new Community Housing projects which are such a big part of how we assisted our members in the past 30 years.

Another area I feel I have left as a ‘work in progress’ is the present make up of our board.

Over the past 26 years (and right up to the time of the proposed merger), all our directors were local.

Today approximately 80% are either Brisbane based and/ or work in Brisbane.

Just recently, a member said to me, “we need to keep a Maple Street, not a Queen Street view here at our local credit union.” And I agree.

If the Credit Union is to continue to ‘reach out’ to our community, we need our community to be involved on the board.

Nominations for Directors for election at our 2015 AGM in November open in August.

Let’s bring back the ‘Maple Street’ view to our MCU board.

This is only one – it’s My second point is, I believe that people often use their vehicles in this way because they are frustrated and angry. This is only one example of an inappropriate way that people release their frustration. There are many!

Abuse of alcohol is a much more common example.

We all get frustrated at times, it’s just whether we let it control us or not. There are many causes for this too – sometimes it is due to relationship problems, financial pressure, miscommunication or low self-esteem. The important thing is that we find a good way to release this anger and frustration. I believe that anger is like our body’s way of saying ‘something is wrong!’ So, if anger is something that you struggle with, consider talking with a trusted friend, family member or even a counsellor about it.

There are also things like sports, getting outdoors, listening to music, building stuff, and being active.

Many people find praying to God an awesome way to deal with anger – they say that when they talk to God about their problems and anger and ask him for help that God gives them peace. In the bible, 1 Peter 5v7 says ‘Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.’

My family and I have lived in Glasshouse Country for nearly nine years now. It is a fantastic area – it has an awesome indigenous history and also a rich farming heritage. It is agreat place to raise a family in a relaxed rural atmosphere. Lately however, I have noticed an increase in the amount of black streaks on local roads made by people doing burnouts in cars.

I have two points to make. Firstly, what right to these drivers have to trash the roadways around our town? How is what they are doing, benefiting our community? This is not what our beautiful region is about. We live in such a gorgeous iconic part of Australia I think it is a shame that a small number of people are making it look trashy.

Because it’s not trashy – it’s amazing! My second point is, I believe that people often use their vehicles in this way because they are frustrated and angry.

Sport Competition produced some good competition, with Burrum Berries from Beerburrum taking out the round with a strawberry weighing 162 grams.

This is an impressive effort, but still a way off the weights we are aiming for. The leading contender so far this year is Braetop Berries' Round 1 winner (176 grams). So growers, to win the 2015 comp, can you improve on 176 grams?

Then the big challenge is to aim for the Guinness World Record. Remember earlier in the competition we reported that the world record holder, from a Japanese farm, was announced recently at 250 grams. In past

years, we have had winning entries weighing 240 and 245 grams, so it must be possible for this district to produce a world champion!

The winning grower each week receives a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel, sponsor for this annual competition run in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival.

The 2015 champion grower also wins a dinner for two at the hotel Bistro.

Round 5 closes on Friday, July 31. Bring your entries to Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-op any time during the week for weighing and recording, but no later than 4.00pm on Friday.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Sue Greentree On Thursday, July 23 the ladies played a Single Stroke competition for trophies donated by Jan Corfield and Kathy Moffat. It was a lovely day and the competition attracted 33 players who braved the wet conditions underfoot to compete in 2 divisions. The worthy winners were Division 1 winner Teresa Keast with 72 nett and runner-up Mavis Brimelow with 76 nett. Division 2 winner was Heather Coyle with 68 nett and Division 2 runner-up was Bridget John with 76 nett.

NTP’s were won by Kathy Moffat No 2, Cathy Stone No 5, Lea Garner No 16 and Karen Gannon No 18. Next week’s competition, July 30, will be a 4 Person Ambrose sponsored by Brenda Briese, Heather Henn, Cathy Stone and

Andrea Campbell. The ladies welcome new members, beginners and visitors.
