Hi Everyone...

This week’s front cover features Glass House Mountains local Tic Davis in her happy place - her garden. Tic is a passionate gardener and over the years she and husband Cliff have opened their garden to share with others and to raise funds for charity.

When they open their garden on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20 from 9am-4pm they will donate the money they raise to Beyond Blue.

Beyond Blue is a wonderful organisation. Its goal is to equip Australians with the knowledge and skills to achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they live.

It struck me that this is a really great match, as for people who garden, or who just enjoy being in the garden, it can be a wonderful place for their mental wellbeing. It’s a place of peace that brings them joy and satisfaction.

So it seems rather fitting that by Tic sharing her love of gardening with the rest of our community, she is able to assist those that are doing it tough to get some extra support when they need it.

Kicking off at 3pm this Saturday, October 12, the Mooloolah Valley Country Club will be decked out in a German beer hall theme.

Hard work recognised

Hive Haven of Beerburrum has once again been announced as a finalist in the 2019 Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award, which is part of the Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

The business has also been listed in the top 50 Australian business leaders by the Australian Small Business Magazine and is a finalist in the food and agribusiness category of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards.

Jeff and Ann Ross, who farm both European honeybees and Australian stingless bees, founded Hive Haven after losing their bees in 2013 due to heat waves when they developed the Hive Haven V9 native bee box.

The bee box is specifically designed to maintain a stable temperature in both hot and cold climatic conditions meaning native bees can thrive in areas where previously they would have perished.

Hive Haven hopes to help farmers produce high value export quality products while safeguarding their pollination capacity.

The dynamic duo will be in the running for a $2,500 award prize from the Commonwealth Bank on the night, as well as the possibility of being announced as the winner of the People’s Choice Award through the Facebook page of Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

The winners will be announced in Brisbane on Friday, November 29 at a gala presentation dinner.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace will once again showcase our beautiful region on his Christmas card this year.

He is calling on local residents to submit photographs of our spectacular region to the 2019 Photos of Fisher Christmas Card Competition.

Residents of Fisher are encouraged to submit photographs by uploading them to Instagram with the hashtag #photosoffisher and the location they were taken, or by emailing them to andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au. The closing date for submissions is Monday, October 28.

A selection of submitted photographs will feature on the Instagram page @photosoffisher.

The winning image will be used as the front cover of his 2019 Christmas card, which is widely distributed in Fisher, and will be printed on canvas and hung in his office in Parliament House, Canberra.

“My colleagues are already jealous of the fantastic views that decorate my office from the past two competitions. This year I’m hoping to remind them all once again why they should make a visit to the Sunshine Coast today,” Mr Wallace said.

This year Tic has chosen Beyond Blue.

“We’ve personally seen what an important and caring role Beyond Blue performs. And with so many rural producers suffering personal stress from droughts across Queensland, Beyond Blue can do with all the financial help they can get,” Tic said.

A Beyond Blue representative will give a presentation about their important work on the Saturday (October 19) at 12noon.

Tic hasn’t opened her garden for a few years and has been hard at work making changes and improvements. So if you’ve been before, come along to see how the garden has evolved.

And if you haven’t been before, you’re definitely in for a wonderful day.

Entry is $5 per person and you will also receive a ticket in the lucky door prize, which is a beautiful hand-crafted coffee table that will be drawn at the end of the weekend.

Food and drinks will be on sale across each day including morning/afternoon tea $3, sausage sizzle $2.50 and spring rolls $2 each, with coffee/tea/water free.

If you are looking for some inspiration for your garden or just enjoy poking around someone else’s garden, then you are in luck.

Tic's carefully curated and immaculately kept floral wonderland has many water features and corners to explore.

There will be loads of stunning cacti, succulents and a variety of other plants available to buy on the day, as well as expert advice on how to care for them if you are new to gardening.

Tic has opened her garden to the public only five times over the years, and each time hundreds of people have come and have been impressed with all her efforts.

Get up close and personal with Rick Price

By Sonia Clark 1990s heartthrob and pop sensation Rick Price is returning to Australia to once again showcase his ‘Heaven Knows’ album cover-to-cover tour in intimate solo acoustic mode. Ladies (and lads), if you missed out on last year’s intimate musical affair then now is your chance to get up close and personal.

Last year his shows were so well received he decided to repeat the effort and will showcase his talent at two venues in the hinterland - the Palmwoods Hotel on Wednesday, October 16 and Beerwah Hotel on Thursday, October 17.

Beerwah Hotel’s marketing manager Cassie Orreal said that last year’s show was awesome and she believed Rick would also be premiering some newly written material along with the crowd favourites.

“I believe he has been busy writing so I think he plans to treat fans to some new compositions along with his ‘Heaven Knows’ acoustic set. His last show here was great with fans loving hearing him play the album, which sounds incredible performed in an intimate acoustic mode.

“They also loved the chance to get up close and personal after the show, which was pretty exciting! After the show Rick was happy to chat with fans, which was a big highlight of the evening for many people,” Cassie said.

Rick Price’s debut album ‘Heaven Knows’ was originally released in July 1992 and peaked at number three on the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) albums charts.

Rick smashed the ARIA charts with his hit singles ‘What’s wrong with that girl’, ‘Not a day goes by’, ‘A house divided’, ‘Walk away Renee’ and ‘Heaven knows’. Overall the album spent 23 weeks in the ARIA top 40 charts during the 1990s. The second single and title track ‘Heaven knows’ charted across Europe and Asia and won the APRA (Australasian Performing Rights Association) song of the year award in 1992.

The Australian singer songwriter is returning to Australia for this special solo acoustic mode tour from his home in Nashville, Tennessee. Audience members will be treated to a performance that is sure to thrill avid fans and iconic Australian music lovers alike.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Maleny Rotary celebrates 60 years The Rotary Club of Maleny will celebrate 60 years since the club was chartered on Wednesday, October 23.

The club has a rich history of service projects in the district, which include being an integral part in the establishment of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, the Maleny and District Disaster Relief Fund and the Rotary bridge across the Obi, which connects the town to the showgrounds.

The celebration will be held in the Maleny RSL hall, the same venue that hosted the presentation of the charter at a dinner on October 10, 1959.

Sherryl Gregory, the current president of the club, would like to invite all current and past members, Friends of Rotary and community members to attend this special occasion to celebrate with the club.

David Wilson (pictured far right) is the only surviving charter member and he will be guest speaker at the upcoming dinner.

In 1959 the Nambour Chronicle reported that the dinner was “one of the biggest functions ever held in Maleny”.

Business News Local IGA supporting rural firies The team at IGA Glasshouse and Landsborough recently donated two pallets of water to the local rural fire brigades. The generous donation from the local family-run business allocated a pallet of Community Co water each for the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade and Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade.

David Gower, from the Glass House Mountains brigade, said that the donations of bottled water were very gratefully received and with the fire season coming up it was a much appreciated donation.

“We’ll donate 12 slabs to Peachester Rural Fire Brigade and the rest we’ll use in the trucks and to hand out to volunteers,” David said.

Felicity Grigor, of IGA Glasshouse and Landsborough, said that the rural fire brigade service did such a wonderful job assisting people in need that she and the team were more than happy to offer support.

“As a local business we see first-hand how our

Organic month a success

Organic wine month at the Landsborough Hotel was fantastic, says organiser Julie Ryder, with plenty of interest and a big turnout over the month of September.

In its sixth year, the month-long event celebrated all things organic including organic, preservative free and biodynamic wines, beers and cider.

“This year’s event went very well and we had a lot of First prize hamper winner Leisa

interest, especially in the hampers,” Julie said.

“We had some great specials throughout the month of September, and we still do on some of our organic range.”

Julie said she was not surprised by the success of the month considering the current popularity of organic wines and beers.

The highlight of the month was the announcement of the hamper winners, with Leisa Bright the lucky winner of the $320 hamper.

Local craft brew takes off

Travellers can now enjoy a locally brewed tipple before they travel, with Sunshine Coast Airport announcing new additions to Swell Café from local brewery Brouhaha.

The brewery is renowned among locals for craft beer from its picturesque Maleny premises. Now a couple of the Brouhaha beers will be on tap, alongside others in cans, with flavours that pair well with the food on offer from Swell.

It’s all a collaborative effort by Sunshine Coast Airport, Brouhaha and food service providers at the airport.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie said part of the travel experience Toby Stodart from Brouhaha is enjoying the Brewery with David Jackson sights, sounds from Sirromet Winery and flavours of a destination.

“By incorporating local businesses like Brouhaha into the mix offered at the airport, we’re not only showcasing local boutique producers and supporting the Sunshine Coast economy, we’re giving travellers those unique experiences,” he said.

Matt Jancauskas, founder and head brewer at Brouhaha Brewery, said they were really excited to be partnering with Cater Care’s Swell Café.

“We’re passionate about great beer made from locally sourced ingredients and we love nothing more than sharing our passion with the world.”

Maleny Chocolate opens their door

Maleny locals were licking their lips last Thursday as their very own Maleny Chocolate Company opened its brand new retail space, offering free tastings to locals.

For the past 14 years, Maleny couple Dorothy and Steve Hills have been running Maleny Chocolate Company and supplying wholesale high-end chocolate products to specialty stores from Brisbane to Noosa.

The team at Shell Beerwah, located at the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative, are again part of another awesome national competition that invites customers to win free fuel for a year – and also for four friends.

President steps down after 18 years and 18 holes In December 2001, retired scientist and former hockey player Dr Max Whitten was elected president of the newly formed and aspirational Maleny Golf Club. At the time the club had no land on which to build its dream golf course.

Fast forward to December 2019 - four years after the first nine holes at Maleny Gold club were built - and one of the finest 18-hole golf courses in South East Queensland will be completed and open for business.

After almost two decades at the helm and with the mission finally accomplished, Max has handed over to newly elected president Jeff Kruse to facilitate a seamless transition.

The quality course, serviced by a top-drawer maintenance facility, was largely constructed by

Max and club superintendent Mick McCombe marvelling at the new growth on one of the six new greens

volunteers supported by local contractors, Bernie Porter and David Lowden, together with strategic input from professional golf course architects.

In fact, Max won the Queensland Government’s 2016 Sports Volunteer Award in recognition of his volunteer engagement.

Max said the course covered around 25 per cent of the Maleny Community Precinct, with the rest of the area devoted to other sports, effluent disposal, heritage, walking paths, rainforest and wetlands.

“After extensive community consultation over the precinct, construction started in 2014 with a total budget of around $1.6 million,” he said.

Max said the club’s superintendent Mick McCombe had worked miracles with volunteers and contractors to oversee the transformation of dairy pastures and some dense weedy patches into a quality course. “In the process he won two national and one state award for excellence,” Max said.

Businessman and former chartered accountant, David Killeen, was the treasurer during the club’s growth period and led a team developing the office and governance systems, ensuring the club stayed out of debt during the construction phase.

“The young club is now well placed to generate sufficient revenue from members and visitors to meet the operating expenses for maintaining a quality course,” Max said.

“Former journalist and business editor of The Courier-Mail, Richard Owen, served as the club’s first golf shop manager from June 2015 to October 2017 with a remit to establish and

David Killeen, Max Whitten, Wayne Perske, Richard Owen and Mick McCombe raise the new club’s public profile by generating regular news stories in the local media and golfing magazines.

“Last December, the club recruited former tour golfer and PGA professional Wayne Perske as the club’s pro to continue this work in putting the club on Queensland’s golfing map, developing its profile and attracting visitors,” Max said.

Golf Australia largely agrees with Max in recognising that the future of golf lies in quality community golf courses located in regions with mild climates, abundant water supply and proximity to urban areas free from the severe land use pressures being experienced in larger cities.

Max and his wife, Dr Penny Edwards, worked closely towards creating this great vision and now look forward to a tad more free time for other pursuits.

Work gets under way

The renovations at the Glasshouse RSL have started and the plan is to reopen for meals on Friday, November 18.

Specialists have removed the asbestos from the building in preparation for the next stage, which will be to ensure the integrity of the roof structure before installing the ceiling and walls for the main dining area.

Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch president Brian Machin said stage two would be the rebuilding of the administration area and secure alcohol store, followed by the new bar area. A disabled access ramp and new stairs will be added to the main entrance.

“We will keep the community updated as the work progresses through GC&M News and via emails to our members,” Brian said.

He also reminded the community that the sub branch was still searching for a capable person to take on the volunteer position of secretary.

They are looking for someone who could deal with their administration, including attending meetings, writing minutes, dealing with stakeholders and physically attending the sub branch for about 14 hours a week.

The secretary takes on a high level of accountability and trust as well as being able to work autonomously.

New Witta multiple cabin proposal

Order of the bath No, we are not talking of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, which is a British order of chivalry founded by King George I in 1725.

We are referring to the order of bathing by early pioneering families, usually in a galvanised tub in front of a wood stove.

There were no designated bathrooms in early houses and bathing usually took place in the kitchen in front of a warm fire. Water was also a scarce commodity and had to be carted from a nearby creek or water hole.

Using the same water in the tub, the order of the bath may have started with mum or dad, or from the youngest child who didn’t use much water and was probably the cleanest.

If the youngest child was at the end of the queue, that old saying “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water” would be good advice.

As a young child in the Burgess family at Bankfoot House, Ethel Burgess can recall her grandmother (Clementina) bathing her in the galvanised tub in the kitchen and then wrapping her in a warm towel to go to the bedroom to get ready for bed. The towel had been hung over the partly opened oven door to make it warm.

This galvanised tub remains as part of the collection at Bankfoot House.

It wasn’t until 1942 that the Burgess family bought their first proper bath, made of concrete, and it was installed in an enclosed corner of the house verandah.

The Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct is open to the public Friday to Sunday from 10am–3pm and is closed on public holidays.

Property owners Kevin and Joan Zelow have plans to convert their rural block at 143 Curramore Road Witta into a holiday cabin accommodation facility.

According to material change of use plans lodged with Sunshine Coast Council recently, the plans involve the creation of seven cabins and a manager’s residence on an eight hectare site, which is currently zoned for rural purposes.

As the Sunshine Coast planning scheme recognises that short-term accommodation is an allowable development on rural lands, the application has been identified as code assessable, meaning that no public notifications are required and no public submissions can be made.

According to the application report, the development should not be a concern to local residents as it “… reflects the existing character of the surrounding area and will not diminish the amenity of surrounding properties”.

The report said the “… proposed use will not disturb the surrounding neighbourhood amenity with the cabins to be sited in a low impact manner that is sympathetic to the natural features of the site. There is a significant spatial and vegetation buffer between neighbouring properties that will screen the built form and block any additional noise …”.

That is also a great description of the three enthusiastic organisers who have brought the concept together - Sarah Williams, Marie Shannon and Nicole Hilton (pictured below).

The creative trio have combined their individual strengths to create this regular event, which is sure to prove popular with locals and tourists.

Their goal is to bring together the local area’s absolute best craftspeople, authors, woodworkers, designers, artisans and food creators to showcase and share what they have created.

After sharing their idea for the quarterly handmade market in Maleny, they received great feedback and support for the concept and are now really looking forward to the first event next Sunday.

They reckon that visitors to the market are sure to find something to suit their personality as well as being a great place to buy a gift or simply take something home that has been made in Maleny and the surrounding areas.

Maleny Dairies long table

In September I had the honour of opening the Maleny Dairies Long Table Spring Showcase, a creative new way of showing off the fantastic produce of our local farmers and producers. A group of eight local businesses collaborated to create an authentic five-course feast on a long table set up in the paddocks of Keith and Sonya Hopper’s farm, surrounded by their curious cattle. The local producers involved were Maleny Dairies, Maleny Black Angus Beef, Maleny Cheese, Maleny Food Co, Strawberry Fields, Clouds Vineyard, Tim Adams Speciality Coffee and Spicers Tamarind Retreat. Local chef Matt Yurko of the Canape Project designed the menu to showcase the produce of these tremendous Maleny businesses and highlight the hardworking people behind the food and drink that we enjoy on our supermarket shelves. I am grateful to all of the producers involved and the Hopper family for hosting the event. As I said afterwards in a speech in Parliament House, if you haven’t already, check out these Maleny locals’ fantastic produce - you won’t regret it!

State Member for Glass House Glasshouse senior citizens visit Parliament

As you may be aware, I occasionally host community groups at Queensland Parliament for a tour and barbeque. Earlier in the month, I had the privilege of being joined for the day by the lovely ladies and gentlemen of the Glasshouse Senior Citizens.

As we sat in the chamber, I was fired some pretty tough questions! I reckon they were tougher than what I actually get in Parliament! And I always enjoy the opportunity to whip out the trusty Andrew Powell MP chef apron and sizzle up a storm on the barbie.

Road safety

Sadly we have had a spate of accidents and fatalities on Glass House roads in recent times.

I extend my sincere sympathies to the families who have lost loved ones. However, I must also express an incredible amount of frustration, as do the local police, at the increasing number of motorcycle accidents caused by speed, lack of rider experience, rider error, visibility or collisions. Motorcycles make up only five per cent of registered vehicles in this state yet they represented 20 per cent of the 247 deaths on our roads last year.

When this occurs, I often have constituents calling for a lowering of speed limits. As I mentioned, frustratingly, a lot of these accidents are caused by individuals who are not abiding by the existing speed limits, so lowering them is not going to make the situation any better.

However, please know I work very closely with the local road policing command to ensure our hinterland roads are patrolled. And I continue to advocate for road upgrades that will benefit all motorists – such as Maleny-Kenilworth Road both at Witta and Cambroon, improvements to Steve Irwin Way and Beerburrum Road, and additional overtaking lanes and intersection upgrades on the Landsborough-Maleny Road. I’ll keep advocating until these projects are delivered.

Congratulations to the Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade! The members not only keep our region safe with other wonderful Sunshine Coast volunteer firefighters but were also excellent hosts for the recent important fire information night.

Record numbers turned out for the evening, representing Conondale to Coolum and many communities in between. Speakers came from a number of agencies including South East Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Rural Fire Service Queensland, council and, of course, our local brigades.

The evening was about preparation and resilience.

Given the recent nearby bushfires, we all know that no community is safe from this danger.

I’m so pleased to share that the accolades continue to build for the beloved Bankfoot House, Sunshine Coast’s heritage-listed house museum. It recently took home a finalist award at the prestigious 2019 Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards in Cairns. These awards are presented by Museums and Galleries Queensland to honour the achievements of individuals and organisations in striving towards excellence. It’s wonderful to see the great work of council and Friends of Bankfoot House recognised at this level! Hats off to all!

Mooloolah State School swimming pool nearly open Use it or lose it! Each year council provides grant funding of $21,720 towards the Mooloolah State School’s swimming pool to allow for public access. The public is entitled to 40 hours per week at this pool and I’d like to encourage all Mooloolah and nearby residents to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. Following maintenance works and subsequent closure during the winter months, the school will soon announce the pool’s re-opening date. So stay tuned and keep on swimming.

Re: Another mine causing concern

Many people have been out marching in the streets expressing fears about "climate change" and also the proposed Adani coal mine. There are legitimate concerns about the mine, including further assault on the artesian basin. But there is another mine which seems to have escaped the attention of the public and the broader green movement. The Yeelirrie uranium mine was opened in WA in April this year. Did readers hear about it in the media?

Not so many years back there was a huge movement against uranium mining and it seems it has been supplanted by "climate change". Yet uranium is a problem from the time it is first dug up as 80% of the radiation in the original ore body is left behind in the tailings releasing radiation into the environment for thousands of years. The artesian basin in SA is now radioactive thanks to the Olympic Dam mine. Then there is the problem of nuclear waste and the fact that nuclear weapons are still being constructed.

A lot of effort seems to be going into the demonising of CO2 and promotion of the idea that some recent warming is unusual, yet the ambiguities that lie within this topic and any counter-evidence is stomped upon, including the views of solar scientists who actually have a good track record at predicting climate. Notably, NASA continues to observe a greening of the planet due to increased CO2. It is after all a component in the process of photosynthesis. They are also observing a decline in solar activity, which could lead to long-term solar system wide cooling.

I believe if there is one form of mining that threatens the future wellbeing of our grandkids, it is uranium mining. It would be good to see a more appropriate level of concern about this issue.

Re: Quarry expansion

After reading V M Smith’s views on the extension of Hanson Quarry in Glass House Mountains (GC&M News, September 25) I would like to point out that the quarry is a major employer in Glass House and surrounds.

It employs 70 or more private truck contractors, diesel mechanics and fitters and turners as well as office staff, bringing prosperity to a large number of individuals and their families.

It has been operating for more than 20 years in its current location and I have noticed how courteous and professional the drivers of these trucks are, with their own children attending schools in the local area and safety being paramount among all quarry staff and truck drivers.

The population is increasing in the area and with everyone chasing their piece of nirvana here, gravel and rock is a commodity we use to repair retaining walls, driveways, etc.

Traffic will increase and nirvana may be lost to humanity.

Accountable development

Our two-year campaign to achieve a spacious park on the Maleny Community Precinct has yielded unexpected insights into Sunshine Coast Council’s approach to development.

Apart from public infrastructure (roadworks, a public toilet and a walking trail) council has outsourced development to, chiefly, Unitywater, the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) and the Maleny Golf Club. The clubs

were granted 30 year leases (council policy is 10 years) based on business plans indicating or assuming that there will be a reliable demand for spectator equestrian events and 18-hole golf at least until 2045/46. The case for golf will be tested once the last six holes are launched in early 2020. After months of correspondence, council advised us in September that while the “equestrian activity” remains an approved use, it will not go ahead due to “lack of demand”.

The community has been aware of this for years, prompting our campaign to encourage MDSRC to consider a park. To this day it remains a mystery why the club considers a park unacceptable.

This will be old news for many folk but we are greatly concerned that council has not set a deadline on MDSRC to produce its new business plan, which is based on multi-use sporting fields aka multi-use exercise and playing fields.

We are also concerned that in considering the new plan, council takes proper account of the following. First, MDSRC campaigned successfully for the removal of field sports from the precinct. It cannot simply say we want them back. Second, its lease requires it to meet “timelines for development”, ie, it cannot experiment with unfeasible outcomes indefinitely.

Third, the lease doesn’t prevent council from encouraging MDSRC to support a park and nor does the planning scheme, which allows parks on council-owned lots zoned community facilities and annotated for sport and recreation, as in this case. Finally, most modern parks include exercise equipment and space to play ball games informally. Win-win.

You Said It Timely spider reminder

We found this spider the other day at our front door. At first glance, it looks very much like a male funnel web spider but there are other local spiders that look similar – like trapdoor spiders.

I have lived here for 13 years and I understand a lot of people have moved to the Maleny district more recently from other areas and simply may not be aware that we have funnel webs here.

A few years ago I had an encounter with an aggressive female funnel web spider in my laundry tub. We just never know when and where they’ll appear.

With the recent little bit of wet weather, funnel web spiders may be on the move now – either males looking for mates or females washed out of their burrows.

Always check your shoes and don't leave your washing basket on the ground. Be careful when handling wood and other materials outside and if you find something that looks dangerous – keep away from it. If you’re not comfortable dealing with it, ask someone who is.

If you are accidentally bitten, it pays to contain them if safe and possible so that the authorities can make an accurate identification for appropriate and prompt treatment.

As a society, we should be environmentally aware of the crucial ecological role all animals play in the natural web of life and we should not be killing them (including spiders and snakes) just because they are ‘dangerous’. Simply be aware of them and treat them with respect.

Water: who is looking?

Like many environmental issues, water has become political. Anything to do with science becomes the target. While our universities and the CSIRO fund and do the scientific research, we find people cooking up opinions and plots to discredit the results.

One area we hear this talk is in the building of dams and diverting of water. In the real world, viability of dams involves hydrology, meteorology and maths. It has nothing to do with politics.

Ground or artesian water needs much more research. It is not an infinite resource.

In the previous long drought Labor built a desalination plant and a water grid in South East Queensland knowing from history that there would be another drought.

The LNP has used this regularly to say Labor spends up big and wastes money - a common thread across much populist media.

Since the Water Act in 2000, Labor has set up and administered water plans for all catchments in Queensland. These involve readings of gauges and weather across catchments, and calculating what can be taken for industry, livestock and people. It involves metering of irrigation water.

Again Labor is blamed for, a. wasting money, creating red tape, harming farming; and b. bothering about the environment, ie, fish, turtles, birds, wetlands, coastal areas, tourists.

The water plans may not be perfectly done, partly because of the political opposition in regions, but these plans are totally the right thing for this dry continent.

Valuable water

If all three levels of government were to show as much enthusiasm towards the Bradfield scheme for diverting water from the north to the inland as they do towards the Olympic Games, then by 2032 the country would actually have something beneficial, instead of several half used stadiums.

The cost to build the water scheme may well be equivalent to the cost of staging the Olympics, and the benefits to the country water supplies would be enormous.

A target of 100km a year would have water flowing into the northern Warrego River and on to the Murray-Darling system by the year of the Olympic Games.

Water usage would enable fresh food to be grown and exported to the north of Australia, and then delivered to Asia within 24 hours. Consumers on the entire east coast of Australia would also benefit from the potential nearby food supplies.

Hinterland Families Kindy open day

The Beerwah and District Kindergarten will hold its open day on Saturday, October 12 from 9.30-11.30am. The community-based not-for-profit association provides a nurturing and educational experience for children in the year before they attend prep.

Young equestrians win state titles

By Sonia Clark Six riders from Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club representing zone six recently competed at the Pony Club Queensland State Equitation and Show Jumping Championships.

Glasshouse Christian College students Lily (10 years) and Tyler Short (12 years), Beerwah State High students Emma Simsir (14 years) and Lillian Evans (15 years), along with Cody Tinknell (14 years) and Nora Palasthy (14 years) travelled to Rockhampton for the championships held on September 24-26.

The riders were successful with Lily, Tyler and Cody winning their age groups and becoming state title holders. Lillian won reserve champion, with Nora placing third and Emma fifth. This is an incredible outcome for riders coming from a small local club, especially as they were competing against the best in Queensland.

Brooke Short, mum of Lily and Tyler, said she was incredibly proud of the efforts of all the riders and the support and encouragement of their club.

“All our riders placed in the top five at state level competing against the best riders in Queensland – so this is an incredible effort! No club that I know of has this many rider placings at state level. We are only a small club so this an even greater achievement,” Brooke said.

Along with these placings, three of the riders gained the highest zone points, which helped zone six achieve highest points of all zones in Queensland.

Cody and Tyler were chosen to represent Queensland in the national team.

With only four riders picked in all of Queensland, this was also quite an accomplishment.

Cody and Tyler plan to compete at national level with representation at national championships to be held in Toowoomba 2020. Go team!

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has announced the winners of the third round of his 2019 Local Heroes grants. Usually, four grants of $250 are available for individuals or groups in the electorate four times a year. In this round, however, six winners were chosen with two from the GC&M News readership area.

Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club will use the funds it received towards buying a small junior goal to provide younger players with improved equipment, as part of its aim to support the growth of football in the local area.

Peachester History Committee Inc also received a grant to cover some of the costs of celebrating the opening of the committee’s new shed and the 130 year anniversary of the Peachester Hall on October 26.

From the churches Consider the lilies At this time of year, we remember the feast day of St Francis, the 12th century founder of the Franciscans. He has a long association with animals and nature, which is why often in our churches we invite people to bring their pets to be blessed. Francis is remembered for a poem called ‘Canticle of the Sun’, which has been turned into a well-known hymn ‘All creatures of our God and King’. In this hymn he refers to the Sun and Moon, wind and water, fire and earth as brother and sister. This encompasses all of the created order - air, water, earth and fire were the four elements that people thought were the basis of everything, and the Sun and the Moon represent things above the Earth. All of these are seen as in an intimate relationship with humankind.

Everything speaks of God and praises God in fulfilling its own nature and function in the vast web of relationships and interdependencies that constitute creation, us included. This relationship of mutuality and respect and affection reflects God’s own love of the world God created.

SCHHS social worker Christine Hegerty said learning how to manage anxiety was the key to controlling it.

“The Managing Anxiety Program teaches participants how to stay afloat when waves of anxiety start rolling in and how to surf them to safety,” Ms Hegerty said.

“Learning how to disarm anxiety-provoking thoughts and problem solve helps participants take charge and reclaim happiness.”

Anxiety is an extremely common condition, with one in four Australians experiencing it at some stage in their life.

“No one is immune from anxiety as it affects people of all ages, genders, occupations and social standing,” Ms Hegerty said.

MAP is a free four-week program that requires participants to attend a twohour session each week. Participants learn a range of anxiety management techniques from a team of qualified social workers.

The next program will start on Friday, October 11 from 9.30–11.30am at the Maroochydore Health Hub, 60 Dalton Drive, Maroochydore.

A GP referral is not necessary but bookings are essential and limited.

What's on in October Hinterland Alive

Fri The new curators of Vianta Arts have put 11 together their first exhibition - Hinterland Alive - featuring the work of seven local artists on the walls of Vianta Espresso & Wine Bar in Simpson Street, Beerwah.

An official opening of the exhibition will take place this Friday, October 11 from 6pm and it will be on display until November 15.

If you don’t make it to the opening night, you can always pop in during the café’s opening hours to take a look or, if you need a quiet moment during the Street Party on October 18, you can sneak inside and take a look at the work of these talented locals.

This exhibition will feature works from local artists Carolyn Davies, Glenis Gray, Kay Pauli, Wayne Hill, Noela Mills, Wayne Smith and Raquel Manson and encompasses a broad variety of styles, with brilliant mixed media submissions, stunning Aboriginal art and thrilling landscapes.

There will be something for every enthusiast!

Model trains on display

Sat A free model train display and sale day 12 will be held on Saturday, October 12 at the Uniting Church hall in Queen Street Caloundra from 8.30am-1pm.

The event is being hosted by the Sunshine Coast Model Railway Club (formerly known as the Caloundra & District Model Railway Club).

The club will have its T-Track layout operating as well as its interactive children’s layout where younger train enthusiasts can run their own trains.

There will be 25 vendors offering a wide variety of new and pre-loved locomotives, rolling stock and railway accessories at competitive prices.

A test track will be available to test purchased locomotives.

Club members will be on hand to answer questions and give advice on all things model trains.

The restaurant car will be open and offering a variety of tasty food, coffee, tea and soft drinks.

There will be a raffle that’s drawn on the day plus free admission and plenty of free railway magazines.

Based on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, 20-21 the Viva Vivaldi Festival celebrates the music of Antonio Vivaldi and his contemporaries.

The brainchild of local musician Kim Kirkman, the festival will showcase six performances of Baroque period music at a variety of interesting locations.

“Many people in Maleny have said that they don’t get a chance to hear classical music in town.

Well, we are changing all that for the weekend,” Kim said.

“Vivaldi had a vibrant, unique style 300 years ago that sounds fresh today, especially when it is performed passionately by local performers,” he said.

The performances will be held at the Solothurn Chapel on Reesville Road, White Eagle Lodge in Witta and the Maleny State School hall on October 19-20.

The Heiresses (Las Herederas) comes to us from Paraguay and depicts a 30-year relationship between Chela (Ana Brun) and Chiquita (Margarita Irun). The women are from the declining elite class and live in a large home in the nation's capital Asuncion.

The house - which is falling into ruin - and their lifestyle are relics of a past time and the women gradually find themselves in a society where class and privilege no longer have any cachet. It is while facing an uncertain future that Chiquita begins to sell off family silver and crystal to pay for the huge debts she has incurred. Then she is charged with fraud and is sent to jail. For the first time in decades, Chela, the more timid of the two, is alone in a near-empty house and has to fend for herself. What results provides us with a fascinating and surprising insight into her transition. As has been remarked, this is a film whose impact mostly lies in the unspoken. It is quiet and observational, encouraging the viewer to read between the lines. And that is its great appeal. It’s an amazing directional debut for Marcelo Martinessi.

In the Garden Don’t blame flowers for your hay fever

Hay fever … it’s the time of the year where people start with the sneezing, the runny nose, the itchy throat and the watery eyes.

If you’re one of the estimated three million people who suffer from hay fever, you’ll know how terrible it can make you feel.

And the one thing people most often blame for their hay fever … pollen from flowering plants.

Damn those gardeners!

However, according to the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney director of horticulture, Jimmy Turner, the fact is most pollens, especially from flowering plants, are too heavy to float in the air.

He wants to set the record straight and combat the annual fake news on flowers and share facts about spring allergies.

“This time of year allergy sufferers walk outside, sneeze and then look for the nearest flowering plant to blame. Just because your neighbour’s wattle is in bloom doesn’t make it the evil culprit,” Mr Turner said.

“Pollen from flowering plants usually travels no more than a few inches by wind and these plants rely on butterflies, bees and other pollinators to move their pollen from plant to plant.”

By and large, the cause of our allergies is mostly from wind pollinated grasses and trees, and the one that may be causing your head to feel like it is going to explode could be hundreds of kilometres away from your home.

It’s easy to blame flowers because you’ve most likely never noticed ryegrass, couch or other grasses in bloom. The large tree culprits you need to be aware of include plane trees, privet, oak, pines and sheoaks.

Studies show that most hay fever is caused by mould, dust and especially pollen from grass and trees as these particles are light and easily blown by the wind in large quantities.

The fact is your garden shouldn’t have to take the blame for your allergies.

Top tips for low-allergen gardening The best type of low allergen plants to have in your garden, especially at this time of year, are plants that are pollinated by birds and bees.

Low allergen plants for this time of year include roses, kangaroo paws (native), begonias, orchids, snapdragon, native fuschia, nemesia, cut leaf daisy, fan flower, nodding blue lily and billy buttons (all natives).

Other top tips from Jimmy Turner, from the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, to keep your hay fever at bay include: • Garden early in the morning when pollen levels are lower.

• Mow your lawn regularly to keep grass pollen down.

• Keep on top of your weeds as these are the cause of most of your pollen issues.

• Choose the right plants in your own landscape, ie, low allergen plants.

• Have a good air purifier for indoors during the hay fever season.

Bangalow palm There’s nothing like palms to create a tropical atmosphere in the garden. But not all palms are created equal. There are some species that are not suitable for this area. For example, Cocos palms have fronds and fruit that can cause digestive problems, injuries and deaths in flying foxes.

A species that is suitable for our local area is the Bangalow palm (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana), also known as the piccabeen palm. The Aboriginal people used the old leaf sheaths as carrying vessels (pikki).

Belonging to the family Arecaceae, Bangalow palms are prolific in subtropical and littoral rainforest and wet eucalypt forest throughout Queensland and New South Wales.

The flowers are a favourite food source for rainbow lorikeets, while many species feed on the fruit including flying foxes, Australian king parrots, Australasian figbirds, many doves and pigeons, pied currawongs and sulphur-crested cockatoos. The leaves are chomped on by the caterpillars of orange palm dart and yellow palm dart butterflies.

Bangalow palms make a great choice as a backdrop for a rainforest garden.

They are fast growing to about 25m, with tall straight stems and have shallow roots so can be planted near buildings. They are relatively low maintenance, requiring no pruning, and they are tough, tolerating both heat and light frosts. However, they do appreciate a good amount of watering, especially during hot weather.

Sport Cricket’s Junior Blasters Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club is running the Woolworths Junior Blasters Program again this season. It is cricket’s entry level program for girls and boys aged 5–7. The program teaches children the basic skills of cricket in an environment that is fun and safe. Most importantly, it promotes a healthy lifestyle where children develop social skills and make new friends. The registration fee is $99. All participants receive a t-shirt with their name on it, a bucket hat (in a choice of Big Bash team colours), personalised plastic bat, rubber ball, sticker sheet, a welcome note and sticker and a Woolworths Cricket Blast passport.

Unfortunately, some members had their vehicles hail dented. Winner was Liz Fravelle on 39 points on a count back from Mavis Brimelow also 39. NTPs: 2 - Andrea Campbell, 5 - Joey Eccles, 16 - Dianne Flint and 18 - Karen Gannon (second shot). Birdie box - Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone. BRD to 36 points.

Thursday, September 3 was the monthly medal, including medal of medalists for 2019. We had 53 ladies in three divisions. The division one winner was Cathy Stone with a great score of 68 nett from Sonia Kenway on 72 nett. Gross winner was Jo Malone with 79 off the stick. The division two winner was Leith Barnes with another good score of 69 nett from Toni Grant on 71 nett, and

the gross winner was Alice O'Connell on 94 gross. Division three winner was Diana Smith on 73 nett and runner up on a count back Pat Chapman on 73. Gross winner was Heather Coyle on 106. NTPs: 2 - Robyn Medal of medallists Ryan, 5 and 16 - Jo Cathy Stone Malone and 18 Andrea Campbell (second shot). Putting was won

by Mavis Brimelow on 26 putts. BRD went to 75 nett.

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Kath Smith and Gillian Bradley played one game of golf croquet against Donny Griffiths and Bev Sockhill on Thursday, September 26 beating them 7–5. Afternoon tea and a visit from Ken Barker and Vince Carbery led to a rearrangement of the schedule. Gillian and Bev played Donny to a four-all draw. Kath played Ken in a 14 point game of association that Ken won 14–6.

The club’s division four championships were played on Saturday, September 28. Stuart Craig, Priscilla Vickers and Gillian all acquitted themselves well. Stuart, playing with the handicap of being ill, was beaten 5–4 by Gillian and 4–3 by Priscilla. In what would become the final, Gillian played Priscilla and, in another tight finish, edged ahead 8–7. Congratulations to Gillian, division four champion for 2019. In the attached photo Gillian and Priscilla are facing off before the final. No ankles were hurt in the performing of this activity.

On Sunday, September 29 Helen Andrews and Vince teamed up in a game of association against Nick Cram and Kath. Helen starred making four hoops, with her team winning 7–4. It’s not the score that matters but the spirit in which the game was played. This was a game punctuated by numerous visits from other players and a social success on that basis alone.

The Range Care group played board games in TS Centaur because of the weather but had a good time nonetheless. The rain is very welcome on the lawn.

Sport Easy Find Classifieds Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover What a winter season we’ve had at our Wednesday night competition, with holidays, a little rain, new team members and still the Musketeers came through to show all teams a clean pair of heels with their runaway form.

Well done to Steve Ellet, Dave Edwards, Ian Spence and Ian Dickson for the great form and team work shown throughout the season.

They finished in good shape with a win over close rivals from North Maleny, the Amigoes , whose skip Dave Coffey, despite some touchers and good form, had to concede to his mates over a cold beer in the club house. Well done Musketeers, but remember Amigoes have already had a seasonal win. This friendly rivalry will be continued over the spring/ summer competition.

Contributed by David Hayes Monday, September 30: Ladies district triples was a full day of bowls with three games of 18 ends. No results were passed on but it is great to see the club holding such an event for the ladies of our district.

Tuesday, October 1: Fire brigade visitors arrived at 11am for a few cold beers followed by lunch then a 1pm game of bowls with 18 fire brigade bowlers and 12 of our members playing 16 ends. The weather was not the best but we managed to play and it was a great afternoon. Happy birthday to Nev Black and thanks to their president Bob Lynch for his assistance. Overall Glassy got up 57-54.

Wednesday, October 2: Ladies day but wet weather meant a few players didn’t turn up to bowl so it was decided a game of scroungers was the way to go.

The biggest scrounger was Di Hume on 160 with runner up going to Noelene Annakin on 120. It will be ladies jackpot this Wednesday, October 9, at 8.30am for morning tea and a 9am start.

Thursday, October 3: Winners of the day were Mac Townson and Tony Verdonch with two wins + 24 margin. Runners up on a count back were Noelene Annakin and Grant Podmore with + 1. Lucky draw winners for the second week in a row were Bob Bloomer and John Annakin.

Please be aware our mixed fours have changed from 4pm to a 12noon start on the dates in our calendar due to Club Glass House having Christmas functions and barefoot bowls bookings. On behalf of our committee, sorry for any inconvenience.

Mixed triples are now open with play at 6.30pm on Friday nights in November. Mixed pairs start this weekend. Make sure you are aware of when you play.

October is Bowls Queensland’s Come and Try Lawn Bowls month. On Sunday, October 20 our club will be hosting a come and try day or bring a friend day. They could be a friend, a family member, grandchild, neighbour, anyone you can think of.

Time is 11am-1pm with a free sausage sizzle. We need to introduce new people to our club for us to have a future. So members, please support this morning and try to bring someone you know along.
