Hi Everyone...

on the Cover

I don’t imagine when readers are looking at the GC&M News front cover they take a lot of notice of the volume and edition numbers each week. To be honest, even I don’t give it much more than a passing glance when checking the edition date is correct. However, this week I am making special mention of the fact that it is volume 34 edition 1, signifying that GC&M News is another year older. It is amazing in the digital world we live in that the support we have in our local community continues to allow us to publish a newspaper each week and this week we kick off our 34th year of operation. Since 2011 we have also been putting our editions online each week and we have 6500 Facebook followers. However, it seems that most of our locals still prefer receiving a hard copy of the paper each week. I love to hear how people still enjoy the ritual of grabbing a cuppa and sitting down to go through the paper each week to find out what is happening locally. So, I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks to all our readers, contributors and advertisers for keeping the local newspaper tradition alive and strong in our community for another year. Regards, Dr Lauren McGrath with Percy and Pixie getting ready for the fancy dress competition at Maleny’s Million Paws Walk and Paws of Thunder. See story page 3

Cover Story Paw-tastic day out Maleny Veterinary Services is hosting a ‘pawtastic’ day at Maleny Showgrounds on Sunday, May 19, in support of two events – the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk and Paws of Thunder. Dr Lauren McGrath, from Maleny Veterinary Services, explained that in previous years the surgery had supported the Million Paws Walk and was once again looking forward to hosting the Maleny event for this national fundraiser for the RSPCA. “This year the Maleny Million Paws Walk will be combined with dog races from the Paws of Thunder event, which has previously been organised by Maleny Veterinary Services and the Maleny Apex Club,” Lauren said. “We’ll start the day with the community walk raising money for the RSPCA, followed by a small market, dog dress up competitions and dog races. We want people to get out, support a great cause and have fun with their dogs,” she said. In previous years both of these events have been well attended so organisers are hoping for a stellar turnout for the combined event. The walk starts on the main oval at the Maleny Showgrounds, then on to Coral St and along the Obi Creek Boardwalk back to the showgrounds. Registration opens at 8.30am with the walk starting at 9am. Please note that all dogs must be on a lead. People can register for the Million Paws Walk online now, which is an easy and convenient way

The $1.86 million dollar upgrade of the Beerwah Aquatic Centre, including construction of a new 17m indoor pool, a new entrance and signage, is expected to be completed in late 2019. During a visit to the centre last week, the Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace announced a federal government grant of $500,000 would be provided for the project. These funds add to $260,000 from lessee Swim Fit Sunshine Coast and $1.08 million from the Sunshine Coast Council to fund the facility upgrade that will help make the centre more accessible to all local residents, while the new pool will allow for a wider range of classes and fitness sessions for people of all abilities.

Mr Wallace said the Beerwah Aquatic Centre had a large and growing catchment area and, following the upgrades, would service Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough, Beerburrum, Mooloolah Valley, Peachester and the wider southern hinterland area of the Sunshine Coast. “Wherever you live in the hinterland and whatever your level of fitness these upgrades will ensure that there will be something for you at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre,” Mr Fisher said. Lifelong dream comes true By Sonia Clark Landsborough local Mike Teague is living proof that dreams can come true when he recently fulfilled a lifelong ambition to fly in a World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane. Now aged 62, Mike has dreamt of going up in one of these planes since he was 12 years old and finally on Saturday April 27, his dream became a reality. Mike’s achievement is all the more remarkable having faced a barrage of health and personal challenges following a horrific car accident nearly 30 years ago that left him with an acquired brain injury. Tragically he was later diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and in recent years has suffered other types of cancers along with other health issues. As a young man Mike went through radio and television school in Brisbane with media personality Andrew Lofthouse, who has remained a long-term friend.

Following graduation, Mike went on to enjoy television and commercial radio success and was at the peak of his career when the car accident, at the hands of a drunk driver on New Years’ day 1989, completely altered his life. Over the years Mike has progressively lost cognitive function and at the age of 46 he voluntarily handed in his driver’s licence. Mike said it was a huge decision to voluntarily give up his independence but the thought of potentially causing harm to others through a neurological malfunction was too much to bare. Mike also handed in his pilot’s licence, which he said was particularly difficult having been flying since he was 16 years old and inspired to follow in the footsteps of his pilot dad. “My dad first took me up in a Cessna 150 when I was just 12 and from then I was hooked. To be able to finally realise a childhood ambition with all my health setbacks has been just incredible and proof that you should always believe in your dreams and never give up hope of achieving them,” Mike said. Over the years Mike says he has lost a lot of acquaintances through changes in his behaviour and cognitive ability but he had retained his close friends. He says having a good sense of humour has helped him through it all. Andrew Lofthouse has been supporting Mike’s bid to raise awareness of the effects of acquired brain injuries.

Andrew Lofthouse with Mike The two have been working on a documentary segment pitched to a major commercial television show that features Mike’s momentous flight. To date, Mike has been fortunate to surpass neurological predictions that he wouldn’t live this long but he feels that his condition is now starting to rapidly deteriorate. The $3,500 fee to go up in the plane was generously waived by Fighter Pilot and Bishops Aviation based at Archerfield Airport. Mike said the hour-long flight was beyond amazing, we went up and did everything – loop the loop, rollovers, the lot! The power of those planes is just unbelievable and I’m just over the moon that I’ve finally achieved this lifelong goal. Luckily going up in the ‘flying undertaker’ wasn’t prophetic this time!” Mike joked.

She has also been a successful competitor in the show ring and in numerous competitions for young judges and paraders. Chloe is passionate about the agricultural industry, particularly the beef industry and youth involvement, and is heavily involved in numerous committees that support the next generation including the Angus Youth Roundup Committee and the Northern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Committee. Quarry appeal means fight not over Beerburrum’s recent anti-quarry victory celebrations could prove to be short lived. In an unsurprising move, the Victorian-based company that plans to open a new hard rock quarry, the Barro Group, lodged an appeal just before Easter against the Sunshine Coast Council’s refusal of its development application. The council has notified the Queensland Planning and Environment Court of its intention to fight the appeal. The appeal comes after council voted to reject its planning officer’s recommendation to approve the application, with local councillor Rick Baberowski leading the charge and convincing his fellow councillors to vote down the quarry. Barro Group general manager (Queensland) Ian Ridoutt leaves no doubt as to the company’s opinion of the councillors’ decision to override the planning staff’s recommendation. “The Sunshine Cost councillors have shown no trust in the recommendations of their own officers’ assessment,” Mr Ridoutt said. “Council officers’ 28-month assessment of the Burrum Quarry development application was thorough and exhaustive and the conditions contained in their recommendation of approval were made in consideration of both the local community submissions and the needs of the greater Sunshine Coast community,” he said. “It is our opinion that in some cases the conditions recommended were in excess of what a court would consider to be reasonable and relevant. However, if the councillors had approved the development application, as recommended by the officers, then all the conditions would probably have been accepted. “The site of the Burrum Quarry is one of the best on

the whole of the Sunshine Coast. There are no better or higher land use zonings, planning instruments or legislation that exist for use of the site as a quarry other than those that exist with this site. “Cr Rick Baberowski’s claims that there is no need for additional quarry supplies is disingenuous, uniformed and is in direct opposition to what his council’s officers said in their report.” Mr Ridoutt made reference to last December when Hanson Quarry voluntarily suspended sales, having already sold the volume of rock it can transport in a calendar year. “More recent advice from the state government as well as council indicate that a shortage currently exists in hard rock material readily available on the Sunshine Coast. The proposed quarry at Beerburrum is well placed geographically to commence quarrying and satisfy this forecast shortfall/need. “The quarry material in this part of the Sunshine Coast is already on rations and it is concerning that Cr Baberowski does not either know or acknowledge that the situation will only become more critical,” Mr Ridoutt said. The local community of Beerburrum isn’t giving up according to comments posted on the Beerburrum Action Group Facebook page. “Big businesses need to realise that in lodging an appeal against a decision made by a local council in favour of the community that they represent, that their company is showing utter disrespect for the council and the communities in question,” a Facebook post stated. “Would the owners and operators of these large companies be amenable to tolerating the noise, the dust, and the constant flow of truck traffic through their local

area on a daily basis? The answer to that is no. “So what makes them arrogantly assume that the residents of the township of Beerburrum would, in fact, accept this proposal without so much as a whimper?” The Beerburrum community is being strongly supported by Cr Baberowski. "I will be meeting with the Beerburrum group to help them better understand council’s role in the appeal process and provide what advice I can from the appeals team on what they can do to be prepared, assuming some may have taken up their co-respondent rights as submitters,” Cr Baberowski said. See next week’s Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for more on the issue.

I visited the coast recently to look at the new extensions to the major shopping centre and the thing that is missing from not only this shopping centre but most of them is unique one-off shops. Everywhere I turned and looked it was another chain store. I could have been anywhere in any shopping centre in Australia seeing the same stores selling the same mass goods. When asked what I love about Maleny the first thing I usually tell people is that I love the unique shopping experience. The shops showcase beautiful products and many source and sell locally made products, whether retail or food, so we really are blessed. We know the tourists love Maleny because they keep coming but it’s important that locals keep spending locally too. This will ensure our small businesses not only survive but thrive in the times when tourists are not around. We want to

keep the unique shopping experience alive and we must support local to keep local. The Chamber launched the Live, Love, Shop Maleny campaign this year and you will see more about this in the coming months. Like our Facebook page Maleny Commerce to keep up to date. Small Business Week is coming up in May and our breakfast on Tuesday, May 14 will be held at the Maleny Hotel. It will showcase several local businesses and our guest speaker with be Amanda Gooddy from the Sunshine Coasts Council’s economic development department. Amanda has a wealth of knowledge to share and her presentations to the local community are always interesting and lead to great conversation. Beerwah local celebrates 90 years By Sonia Clark Beerwah local Dorothy (Dot) Harrison (nee Weyer) recently celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by family, friends and neighbours. While Dot may not be Beerwah’s oldest resident, she is pretty confident that she is the oldest Beerwah born-and-bred local. Born in the hospital at Beerburrum in 1929, Dot grew up on the family farm and attended Beerwah State School until she was 12. She is confident there isn’t anyone older than her from her primary school days that is still alive and living in Beerwah.

Kim Howden, Joy Rowe, Jan Schumacher, Kay Brook with their mum Dot Harrison

Dot’s family originally moved to Beerwah in 1906 when her family bought 160 acres (65 hectares) of farmland at the base of the Peachester range. After attending primary school at Beerwah she went to the rural school at Nambour where she learnt to cook, sew and knit. She married Roy Harrison and they built a house in Katherine Street in 1952 and went on to have six children. Today the family boasts five generations, which were wonderfully represented at the birthday lunch celebration held at the home of her daughter Kim Howden in Beerwah on April 27. Dot’s parents also built another house in Katherine Street in the late 1960s or early 1970s, where they retired. After her parents died, the house was left to Dot and she moved there in 1983. She continues to live there independently to this day. Dot’s daughter Kim bought the house that Dot and her husband Roy originally built and plans to keep the house in the family, which has also seen four generations of children attend Beerwah State School. Dot says she is unsure about her secret to a long life but if she knew she’d probably live longer! Kim credits her mum’s longevity to her passion for gardening and travel.

The play is about a senior couple who escape Melbourne in a camper van and settle in what they hope will be a sub-tropical paradise. It resonated with local audiences who appreciated the blend of serious themes and witty dialogue. Director Andrew Wallace said the success of the production confirmed the support for live drama in the community. The Maleny Players are already making plans for their next production of three one act plays that will be performed in August, two of which are written by local people. They are always keen to recruit more actors. If you would like to keep up with what they are doing make sure you like their Facebook Page.

This is a day for all to experience the tastes of Lithuanian food at a luncheon, as well as seeing displays of many different artefacts and entertainment. Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains

It looks like the cosiness in the winter will also be welcomed. The planned outing to the historical village Probians living up to their had to be called off at the last moment because of the weather. We are hoping for motto of fun, friendship and sunshine at Mary Cairncross Park for our fellowship next outing on May 22. A big thank you goes to the speaker at our April meeting, Ivon Northage, who both educated and entertained us with the history of our very special Glass House Mountains. It was sad to learn that one of our members, Stan Kibbler, died last month after a short spell in hospital. Stan with Marita joined Probus in its first year. Sign of changing times

Contributed by Elaine Reeves Glass House Mountains locals may have noticed a new sign at the park adjacent to the Community Hall in Coonowrin Road. The sign has been erected to acknowledge the involvement of the local Junior Farmers in the construction of the park and to provide a permanent reminder of its name – Junior Farmers’ Park. In the 1920s a tennis court was built on the grounds adjacent to the then School of Arts building. The work proceeded slowly but eventually the court was finished, a fence was erected and the court was opened in January 1923. Although the court was well used in the early years, it eventually fell into disuse and became a bit of an eyesore. In 1958 the Junior Farmers were approached by Mr Bill Fullerton to clear this area as a community project and very soon the ground where the tennis court had been was returned to its original contour and the whole area cleaned up.

This park became known as Junior Farmers’ Park. In 1959, a large community event, the Golden Pineapple Festival, was held in the park to celebrate the centenary of Queensland’s separation from New South Wales. A report in the ‘Nambour Chronicle’ said: “On Saturday afternoon, 1000 people joined in the festivities to celebrate Queensland’s Centenary with the Golden Pineapple Festival held at the Junior Farmers’ Park at Glasshouse Mountains”. Mr Frank Nicklin, along with other Glass House residents, planted trees in the park, although it is not known if any of these remain today. There was a procession, which included a pipe band, marching girls and floats entered by the Junior Farmers, Scouts and Forestry Department, as well as the Queens’ float. The photo of the Glass House Mts & District Junior Farmers’ float includes local men Lex Gilvear and Bill Smerdon depicting changing methods of weed control in the pineapple industry. (The truck belonged to the Millburns.) The Queensland Junior Farmers Organisation was founded in 1947 under the direction of Mr Tom Williams for young people aged 15-25 years. It provided social and educational resources, and apparently had a great impact on young people – skills were learnt, citizenship enhanced, leaders trained for office, friendships formed and lives enriched.

Glass House Mountains Hall committee president John Winterhoff remembers the Junior Farmers’ fruit and vegetable exhibits at the RNA Show, debating competitions, the silver ploughing competition and the balls held for the Junior Farmers after the show closed each year, as well as annual conferences throughout Queensland. Trophies for the ploughing competitions were donated by George Walton of Beerwah and John won two of these, which are still in his possession today. Initially the local organisation was known as the Glasshouse Mts & District Junior Farmers, but later, in the 1960s, became known as the Elimbah Glasshouse Junior Farmers after a merge with Elimbah due to a drop in membership numbers.

95 years of employing locals “I’d like to further extend my thanks to our loyal customers and team members over the years.” Office manager Nic Lister, who has been with the co-operative for more than 26 years, said she felt it was great that a small business could keep going strong after so many years. “I think it’s great for our community to have a locally based business still going strong after 95 years and I’m really proud to be part of such a great team,” Nic said. The origins of the co-operative first started with a special meeting in April 1922 held at the Beerburrum Soldiers Settlement. A motion was moved that a branch of the United Fruitgrowers Association be established and a committee was formed to organise the branch. Three weeks later, 19 people attended a meeting at the Glass House Mountains School of Arts Hall and a committee was appointed to carry out details of construction of a building on land leased from Queensland Rail. Once the building was built the association was able to trade. During the following months progress was swift and well supported by local farmers. In 1924, the Attorney General felt that it would be better if the association were registered under the Primary Producers Co-op Association Act 1923 without share capital. That registration was completed on May 3, 1924 and marks the official launch of the co-op. The current building was built in 1971 and the entire operation moved from the building

which is now occupied by Glasshouse Country Auto Body Repairs. It was officially opened in 1972. In the years that followed many changes have taken place in the way the United Fruitgrowers serves the needs of the local community. Local history notes that the co-op was more than just a place for farmers to get their supplies and handle fruit to be sent to the Golden Circle cannery. The association provided a voice for the local community and was also heavily involved in the local progress association actioning road repairers, installation of street lights, guide posts and even the first speed limit signs each side of Glass House Mountains. In 2001, the store expanded and joined Thrifty Link, and in 2008 the co-op became part of the Mitre 10 hardware franchise. The co-op looks forward to serving and supporting the local farmers and community for many more years to come.

This month marks the significant milestone of 95 years of trading for the United Fruitgrowers Co-operative Association Ltd (now trading under Glasshouse Mitre 10). Officially the oldest registered co-operative still trading in Queensland, this incredible milestone is a testament to the loyalty of local community members, customers and staff members over the years. Manager Warren Moffat, who originally started with the business in the early 1970s, is pleased that the store can celebrate this trading achievement and feels that it is especially notable in this day and age. “Not many businesses these days can now say they’ve been running this long. It’s a great milestone that we are very pleased to let people know about and we’ll be having specials instore all month to mark the occasion,” Warren said.

New markets planned for Beerwah An exciting new market is being planned for Turner Park in Beerwah. Lyndon Wittingslow, who recently opened the popular Fat Frenchman Patisserie and Café on Turner Street, has visions of starting weekly Sunday markets in the park. His concept would include stalls for food, art and crafts, trash and treasure, a kid’s area and competitions such as barbeque cook-offs, cake making and special events such as meringue pie eating. Lyndon is looking for people to register their interest in becoming part of the market. He is holding a public meeting on Tuesday, May 21 from 6pm for anyone wanting to get involved. Register your interest to attend the meeting either in person at The Fat Frenchman or by calling him on 0488 355 844. Depending on numbers, the meeting will be either at The Fat Frenchman or an alternate venue to be announced. Lyndon has spoken with locals who love the idea and Cr Rick Baberowski is also supportive. “I really want these markets to showcase the wonderful local produce and products we have here in the hinterland and draw people from near and far to our beautiful area,” Lyndon said. Ideally, he would like the market to start in July. If you are keen to be part of the market, give him a call.

Decluttering expert to speak at Caboolture lifestyle resort The Caboolture community will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of decluttering and downsizing at a free workshop to be hosted at Living Gems Caboolture Riverfront on Wednesday, May 15. Motivational speaker, author and interior designer Tanya Lewis, the Eco Organiser, will share her knowledge at the hour-long ‘Declutter your life’ workshop. Attendees will learn how to ethically declutter, how to identify clutter and how to downsize and live life well – all the while saving money. Resort sales manager Sherry McOmish says that while decluttering is on trend at the moment, retirees have been doing it for years when they go through the process of downsizing. “The workshop is designed to help you start the process and give you some helpful tips along the way,” she says.

The Declutter your life workshop aims to decrease stress levels, clear minds and save valuable time and money by exploring strategies to better organise and manage household clutter. Ms Lewis says the audience will be encouraged to rethink their relationship with clutter in order to live richer, happier lives. “I will cover topics such as how to honour and respect your treasures, how to save money and energy, and how to let go of ‘stuff’,” she said. Guests will be treated to a delicious morning tea and there will be eight display homes open for viewing, along with the opportunity to tour the resort’s award-winning Country Club and some of its many recreational activities, such as the golf simulator or ten-pin bowling alley. In last week’s edition (May 1) GC&M News ran an election feature where the candidates were asked “Why do you want to be a politician?” and “Can you outline one significant issue that you think is concerning for our local readers and what you propose to do about it?” Tracy Burton (The Greens) did not respond before deadline. Due to apparent email problems, she did not receive the emails and reminders asking her for comments. In the spirit of equity, below is her contribution subsequently received.

I got into politics because we need a strong, progressive voice on the Sunshine Coast who will fight for fairness and equality, social justice and our environment. My plan will provide free TAFE and university, dental care into Medicare, affordable housing for all, free childcare, gender equality and a serious commitment to tackle climate change. We need more honesty and integrity in politics, which is why I support the creation of an anti-corruption commission and the banning of donations from corporations trying to buy influence. We need a representative who will stand up for our community’s interest, not the interests of big corporations. The most important issue in this election is the environment. We are facing the destruction of our natural environment, habitat, beaches and tourism industry due to climate change, pollution and overdevelopment. We need strong environmental laws that will protect and preserve our natural habitat, forests, natural reserves and threatened species, clean up our beaches and oceans and save our marine life, create more Indigenous ranger jobs and restore the funding that has been slashed by the government to protect our environment. We need to stop overdevelopment, give the community more say in the planning decisions that affect all of us and create a future that is ecologically sustainable. We also need to take strong action on climate change to address the drought, bushfires, rising sea levels and coastal erosion that is threatening not only our environment and community but our vital tourism industry. Our plan calls for a transition away from coal and big polluters to renewables, which will create thousands of clean energy jobs for our community and bring down our power bills. The Greens are the only party in this election with a serious plan to tackle climate change. We need to stop the damage being done to our climate and hand over a better, safer future for generations to come.

You Said It Surplus

I received a letter from Andrew Wallace, the Member for Fisher, enclosing an unsolicited application for a postal vote. In his letter, Mr Wallace stated that the LNP government will deliver a budget surplus. The Coalition is only forecasting a surplus but is yet to deliver one. The 2018-2019 financial year is actually projected to end with a $4.2 billion deficit. Not a good track record for five years of LNP government. The projected surplus for 2019-2020 comes from cuts such as removing thousands of seniors from the part aged pension and tightening eligibility for the family tax benefit. These austerity measures are designed to make people feel less dependent on what the government likes to call “welfare”. Many economists consider the forecast of a surplus for 2019-2020 as highly optimistic and dependent on factors outside the government’s control such as economic growth, wages and the global economy. In reality, the LNP government has shown a profligate waste of money. Two examples will suffice: Over $20 billion will have to be written off the NBN for it to have a viable and modern future after the government opted for an inferior system. The opening and closure of Christmas Island at a cost of $185 million does not suggest a government that is good at business management. It was all political posturing at the expense of the taxpayer. The LNP’s claim to be better economic managers is a myth. Thomas Whitton Eudlo

Vote for a change of climate

Changing your light bulbs will make a tiny reduction in carbon emissions but changing your politician could be much more effective. How to vote depends on your time scale and your compassion for future generations. Around 2050 the planet’s temperature will be up 1.5C degrees and major problems will be developing. If you are over 50 you will likely not be around to complain. Vote LNP if you want to maintain your current lifestyle and do not care about the next generation. I assume we are addicted to fossil fuels, so around 2100 the temperature will be up 3-5C degrees and climate disruptions will be severe. If you have kids who will be alive at the end of the century and care for their welfare, vote Labor. They propose substantial reductions in carbon emissions and this will delay the disruptions. Sea levels will be up 1.5m and rising, even if all countries meet their Paris targets. Millions of displaced coastal people will be on the move and the global economy will be struggling. Feeding 11 billion people will be difficult when arable land decreases and the cost of diesel and fertiliser sky rockets. Beyond 2100 conditions are speculative but can only get worse. If you care for the future of civilisation, vote for the Australian Greens who will take quicker and stronger action on carbon emissions. This will give our descendants more time to deal with the chaos. Industrial civilisation will be in irreversible break down. I expect population will be in severe decline and there would be less human misery if we start an orderly population reduction now rather than leave it to the usual methods (war, famine, plague). Beerwah Street Party

I am very excited to announce that our much loved Beerwah Street Party is coming back this year, to be held on Friday, October 18, from 4-9pm. The team at Celebrate Glasshouse Country put a lot of effort into running the 2015 and 2017 street parties and have been overwhelmed at the positive responses from people and businesses from all over Glasshouse Country. Celebrate Glasshouse Country is a not-for-profit group run by volunteers. We work to strengthen Glasshouse Country as a region and love to encourage community pride. Our dream of hosting the party annually is a possibility now as we have engaged local event director Bob Burns to guide the project and make it sustainable as an annual event. People of all ages have stopped to ask me when the next street party is and relate what fun it is to have a relaxed night out, meeting friends and neighbours. They love seeing the skills of our young people, learning about community groups and businesses, trying new foods and taking over Simpson Street when we close it to traffic. The market stalls are of a high standard and there are lots of free activities and great music to enjoy. To pay for these activities we rely on sponsorship and donations. The Sunshine Coast Council has awarded us a major grant of $7,500 to get

Electric vehicles

Lack of knowledge of electric cars was evident in my letter (GC&M News, April 17) but no more than Labor leader Bill Shorten’s answers showed. Thanks to the critics of my letter (GC&M News, May 1) who offered some useful information but not answers. The happy EV driver writes of “low maintenance, smooth, quiet and with instant acceleration” but no mention of running cost. I can only presume the cost of electricity charging is bad news! I have raised the question of cost of proposed replacement of coal-fired power with renewable energy. The higher cost and less reliability of electricity at present in this pre-electric car, transition to renewables is not promising. Suggestions that the transition to renewables should be properly planned and gradually introduced in conjunction with coal-fired generation are met with irrational hysteria. To questions about costs, Labor and the Greens say “the cost of doing nothing will be far worse later than the cost of tackling climate now”. That is not an answer! Those are the tactics used by shonky salesmen, urging a prospective buyer to rush into an ill-considered purchase contract. The Greens are urging hasty abandonment of coal mining and coal-fired power and give us no answers as to what revenue will replace the coal royalties to sustain the economy. There are too many unanswered questions about how the costs of Labor and the Green’s promises will be funded. We have heard about their raids on retirees’ savings and taxes on superannuation but many

started and local businesses are coming forward to offer sponsorship. We make sure we let everyone know who these sponsors are and how they make it possible to bring Beerwah alive for an evening in October. If you have any questions or would like to offer your services as a sponsor, volunteer, artisan stall holder, food vendor or entertainer, please contact us via email at events@celebrateGC.com.au. If email is not possible, leave a message on my phone 0408 445 988. Please follow us on Facebook, Celebrate Glasshouse Country, for the latest updates. See you at the party. Judy Tomlinson President Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc more taxes must be expected to meet the costs of their extravagant unexplained largesse to capture the votes of the unwary. Just wrong

The article in the Health & Wellbeing section in GC&M News, March 27, is wrong. Cognitive function was not improved by eating a handful of nuts. It was only that the decline in brain function was slightly less. The study endeavoured to eliminate other factors but since it was a Chinese cohort it might be difficult to apply here. What, for example, if the whole population generally ate less protein or everybody ate rice several times a day? What, I wonder, would happen if you gave up fish to eat more nuts? You have to read these pop science items with scepticism. Frances Harper Maleny

Re: Doesn’t add up

How disappointing that the Poddy Dodger (GC&M News, May 1) should be so negative. The other sites he mentions have various drawbacks. All that the school parents are seeking is that the land not be sold for a developer to profit at the community’s expense. As Peachester unfortunately becomes more urbanised future generations will thank them for having the foresight to have this parcel of land in the heart of the township preserved for the community, for possible later development as a park. Fight for Fisher 2019 Preferencing explained

When you go to vote on May 18 (or before if you are pre-polling) you’ll be asked to number every box (one to seven) on the green House of Representatives paper for Fisher. On the long white Senate paper, you must number at least one to six above the line for the parties or groups of your choice to make it a formal vote. If you prefer to vote below the line in the Senate, you must number at least one to 12 to make a formal vote. This system is called preferential voting. This is where you indicate, using numbers, who you prefer to represent you, from your first preference of candidate through to your last preference (again, one to seven for the green paper and at least one to six above the line or one to 12 below the line for the white paper). Take care with how you mark the ballot papers as doing it incorrectly could cause your vote to be informal and so not be counted. There will be information available at the polling booth and officials to help if required. If you make a mistake, you can return the ballot paper to the polling official who issued it and receive a fresh one. Outside the polling station supporters of various candidates will hand out their suggested preferences on how to vote cards. Remember … these are only their suggestions and you don’t have to follow any of them. For a fuller explanation on how to vote, where to vote, when to vote and all the candidates, see our special election webpage – www.gcnews.com.au/content/2232/fightforfisher2019.aspx. Here’s a summary of how the candidates are asking you to direct your preferences: Trevor Gray (United Australia Party) 2 – Liberal-Nationals; 3 – Labor; 4 – Greens; 5 – Love Aust or Leave; 6 – One Nation; 7 – Fraser Anning’s Party Daniel Parsell (Australian Labor Party) 2 – Greens; 3 – Liberal-Nationals; 4 – United Australia; 5 – Love Aust or Leave; 6 – One Nation; 7 – Fraser Anning’s Party Tracy Burton (The Greens) 2 – Labor; 3 – Liberal-Nationals; 4 – United Australian; 5 – One Nation; 6 – Love Aust or Leave; 7 – Fraser Anning’s Party Chris Paterson (One Nation Party) 2 – Love Aust or Leave; 3 – Labor/Liberal-Nationals; 4 – Labor/Liberal-Nationals; 5 – United Australia; 6 – Fraser Anning’s Party; 7 - Greens Andrew Wallace (Liberal National Party) 2 – United Australia; 3 – Labor; 4 – One Nation; 5 – Love Aust or Leave; 6 – Greens; 7 – Fraser Anning’s Party Mike Jessop (Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party) 2 – Love Aust or Leave; 3 – Liberal-Nationals; 4 – One Nation; 5 – United Australia; 6 – Labor; 7 - Greens Paul Monaghan (Love Australia or Leave Party) “No preference deals have been done; we’re leaving it to the voter to make up their own minds.”

One Nation Party

Phone: 0436 457 747 Email: fisher@onenation.com.au Website: www.onenation.org.au/our-team/chris-paterson Facebook: www.facebook.com/patersonforfisher With recent events not improving the party’s reputation and One Nation having an unstable history resulting in the party being on the fringe of government influence, why shouldn’t voters think that electing you their federal member, rather than a candidate from a party who will form government, would lead to less government investment on local roads, rail and job creating projects? It takes around eight minutes for the Sun’s light to reach Earth but only milliseconds to ‘think’ about the Sun. You’re probably thinking what’s that got to do with politics. Albert Einstein said it best: “We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that create them”. I believe it’s time for a new kind of thinking and would encourage people to have a good think about how they vote this election. If One Nation were to hold the balance of power it would be a great chance to show people what we have to offer. Many politicians forget that they work for the Australian people. They may say they are listening but they make decisions like they know better than us. Having a minor party in parliament would be an Australian insurance policy against whatever major party we end up with. There will be no more bully tactics from the major parties. One Nation will be there to hold them to account and try our best to keep them honest. Whoever you choose to vote for please do some research. You have more power than you may realise. 22

How can local voters take seriously that the party is one that can bring together all sides of society rather than being a divisive and alienating force in the community? I welcome and thank you for this extremely important and relevant question. The matter of focusing in on divisive issues is a smokescreen by the opposition which has taken and used completely innocuous events and remarks to instigate dirty tricks against Fraser Anning who has been contesting successfully for parliament since 1998. However, we have a free press and all publicity is good publicity. The LNP and Labor have presided over a complete disaster for the past 11 years that they blame everyone except themselves for, and the clueless Greens and others who are a policy free zone. The West has been at war with one Arab country or another for the last 29 years and Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party will not shy away from issues that threaten our security - indeed the very existence of Western civilisation and culture itself, which so characterises this 45th parliament, such as the tacit approval of murder, rape, torture, stoning, beheading, crucifixion, hanging, shooting, decapitation, amputation and gouging that occurs on a daily basis in these countries. Being a peacemaker means standing up to these barbaric practices wherever they may occur including Korea, China and even Russia. We should live in peace with our neighbours as far as possible but not at any price and certainly not to obfuscate game-changing policies that are being completely ignored, which can be implemented at minimal cost and will put money back in the pockets of the taxpayer straight away. It's called the WHIG Party GGST (Gifts Goods and Services Tax) and can be implemented within months to replace both Income tax and the current GST and reduce the cost of living at the same time. Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party is the only party with policies to maximise each and every opportunity available to us and is the only party worth voting for at this election by a country mile.

Tracy Burton

The Greens

Phone: 3357 8458 Email: tracy.burton@qld.greens.org.au Website: https://greens.org.au/qld/person/tracy-burton Facebook: www.facebook.com/TracyBurton.Greens With a dire lack of local infrastructure and real employment, and locals suffering cost of living stresses, how could voters really think that voting for the Greens will improve the road and rail networks, grow the construction industry and provide business confidence to improve the standard of living for locals? The Greens’ policies are committed to building a fairer, more equitable society with an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and powerful. We have a plan to educate, up-skill and protect people as our industries change. That means developing strategies to plan for the future of work to overcome the threat of insecure work, casualisation and automation, protect workers’ rights and entitlements, close the gender pay gap, and support small business and the industries of the future. Our plan to transition away from the big polluting industries like coal and invest in renewables will create thousands of new jobs in the clean energy industry to address the job shortage in our community, tackle the threat of climate change and protect our local environment and thriving tourism industry. Our bold plans will transform the way we transport people and goods by kickstarting the electric vehicle revolution and building the necessary electric infrastructure to re-power our economy, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and provide clean and affordable transportation. We will also make the necessary investments to build a cheaper, faster and more reliable public transport system to service the needs of our community, ease traffic congestion and ensure that everyone has access to affordable transportation options. Our plans will also help ordinary people with their cost of living pressures by creating a national energy retailer to stop price gouging and bring down energy costs, provide free TAFE and university to give people the skills and knowledge they need to compete in the changing economy without being saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in student debt, and put dental care into Medicare to save people money when they go see a dentist. We will ensure that public schools and hospitals are fully funded and invest in public housing and essential services such as childcare and the NDIS. We can do all of this by making the wealthy pay their fair share in tax, ending corporate subsidies and banning corporate donations so that our representatives work for the community and not their donors.

Fight for Fisher 2019 Daniel Parsell

Australian Labor Party

Phone: 0436 111 179 Email: daniel.parsell@queenslandlabor.org Website: www.alp.org.au/our-people/our-people/daniel-parsell Facebook: www.facebook.com/laborforfisher In what has become a safe LNP seat over many years, why should local voters think that you’ve got so much more to offer than all the previous defeated Labor candidates for them to stop supporting the current local member who is stable and delivering results? This is not a contest between current and former Labor candidates. This is a contest between Labor and the LNP. A choice between a chaotic alliance of LNP, One Nation and Clive Palmer, or a stable Shorten Labor team offering a genuine fair go for middle and working class people. Having said that, my predecessor Bill Gissane, who proudly ran for Labor in Fisher in 2013 and 2016, would have made a superb local MP. Fisher residents would have been far better served with Bill Gissane fighting for us in Canberra than the sad turnstyle of LNP seat-warmers in the form of Peter Slipper, Mal Brough and Andrew Wallace. The reason people should carefully consider voting Labor is that after May 18 we may well have Labor in office at both a federal and state level. If Mr Wallace and Llew O’Brien in the Wide Bay electorate are returned the Sunshine Coast may have every one of its state and federal representatives in opposition – just sitting across the divide, throwing rocks at the government instead of working collaboratively for our region. This election is about the future, which is why one of the biggest issues differentiating the two major parties is climate change policy. Labor has a comprehensive plan to cut pollution and address global warming. Labor is committed to reducing Australia’s pollution by 45% by 2030 based on 2005 levels and achieving net zero pollution by 2050. We are also committed to 50% renewable energy in our electricity mix by 2030. We know Sunshine Coast residents are pragmatic about renewable energy as we have one of the highest take up rates of rooftop solar in Australia. Sadly, the LNP has no climate change policy. For the past six years they’ve squabbled amongst themselves over climate policy crumbs and finally rolled Malcolm Turnbull when he dared put up a half decent plan. More of the same under this government simply isn’t fair for the people of Fisher. A Shorten Labor government will commit to real action on climate change, get wages moving, close tax loopholes, help ease the cost of living and properly fund our education and health systems.

Paul Monaghan

Love Australia or Leave Party

Phone: 0424 869 110 Email: paul-monaghan@bigpond.com Website: www.loveaustraliaorleave.com.au Facebook: www.facebook.com/LoveAustraliaOrLeaveParty Being a federal member is about fairly representing the interests of everyone in the community. Why should voters think that the candidate for a fledgling party based around the narrow philosophies of its creator with no track record has the maturity and character to be a truly representative member of parliament? A political party is lawfully made up of a broad cross-section of the community and, given a political party requires a minimum of 500 people to register, this automatically negates the concept that any party has narrow philosophies, particularly when a party such as Love Australia or Leave encourages members and the public to contribute their ideas. A democratic government works at its best when a blend of long-standing elected officials are mixed with fresh blood to keep things fresh. New members can breathe new life into old outdated ways of thinking while re-elected members can show them the ways that have stood the test of time. The number of new minor parties that have arrived on the political scene are in direct response to the major parties moving away from their core beliefs, values that they once stood for, thus opening the gateway for new parties that will uphold the original values. Maturity and character are being able to recognise that while we believe our ideas to be worthwhile and for the betterment of Australia we also acknowledge that our ideas are not the only ideas or the only way. As ardent believers in real democracy we welcome the opportunity to have our ideas challenged as this ensures we have to defend our beliefs and why we believe them. This ensures that they stand up to public scrutiny. We strongly believe in representing the whole community and taking all ideas to parliament. I have a long history of service to our community. Imagine how many greater things I could achieve with the letter MP after my name and the government cheque book in my back pocket.

Trevor Gray

United Australia Party

Phone: 0438 953 142 Email: fisher@unitedaustraliaparty.org.au Website: www.unitedaustraliaparty.org.au/candidates/trevor-gray Facebook: www.facebook.com/TrevoryGrayUAP The last political party Clive Palmer set up ended with division, elected members abandoning their voters and leaving the party, and the party being deregistered. Why should voters think it will be any different this time? Prior to endorsement as the candidate for Fisher I was not a member of the PUP (Palmer United Party) or involved with the party so I can’t speak for anyone from that time or with any authority on what happened during that period. Clive has spoken about those days of the PUP in great detail and there are numerous interviews online for viewing. During those years I was working in remote Australia with farmers and land owners and I’m not here to talk about the past. It’s a distraction to the real issues, I’m here to call politicians to account for their unfair pensions and entitlements and pull them back in line with everyday working Aussies. What I do remember was Clive became a politician in 2013 because the government was charging his QNI business $27 million a year in carbon tax and if that tax continued the refinery would close. Clive gave up his career at the refinery and set up a political party to hold the balance of power in the Senate and abolish the carbon tax, which is why I voted for him in 2013 when I lived in Buderim. It’s very different this time for many reasons. 1. 150 candidates in every seat across Australia in the House of Representatives and the Senate. 2. A full suite of transformational policies that put Australia first and put the Australian people first and help the most disadvantaged. 3. Tax reforms that benefit all Australians not just foreign investors, big business and political interest groups. 4. 10,000 members and growing. 5. Save $30 billion on submarines that are a proven successfully tested design. 6. 70% of the country is now dissatisfied with the current major parties. 7. Unprecedented financial investment to give the Australian people an alternative voice in parliament that cannot be ignored. As the candidate for Fisher the level of support I have received personally is amazing and a credit to all those working behind the scenes for years to make the United Australia Party a force for the future that will put Australia first.

Andrew Wallace

Liberal National Party

Phone: 5493 5556 Email: andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au Website: www.andrewwallacemp.com.au Facebook: www.facebook.com/wallace4fisher With the whole of the Sunshine Coast being such a safe LNP stronghold – both at state and federal levels – why should voters think that a LNP government will treat them any differently or any better if they just keep voting the same way again and again? I don’t believe that there are any safe seats in Queensland. Every federal election the voters of Fisher have the same opportunity as anyone to choose who their representative will be. I have worked very hard and successfully to deliver for Fisher over the past three years. I hope that locals will remember that and give me their trust once again this election. However, the surprise 2013 result in Fairfax, another supposedly safe Sunshine Coast seat, proves that any outcome is possible. If voters in Fisher want to avoid seeing Bill Shorten as Prime Minister I ask them to remember that fact and give their first preference to me and to the LNP Senate team. However, if you want to understand how I and a re-elected Liberal National government would deliver for Fisher in the next three years, you should look at our track record since 2016. I have helped bring more federal government money to the Sunshine Coast than ever before. I have helped deliver $3.2 billion for desperately needed upgrades to the Bruce Highway, to add an extra lane between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane and fix congested intersections. I have helped deliver $390 million to duplicate the North Coast rail line between Beerburrum and Landsborough to get commuters home sooner and safer. I have helped deliver record federal funding for schools and hospitals on the coast, as well as $16.9 million for cutting edge local mental health treatment and research, funding for new mobile blackspot towers at Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah and Peachester, new facilities at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and more childcare placements for Beerwah, Glenview and Landsborough. I have also delivered more than $4 million in smaller federal grants for local community groups like Glasshouse Country RSL, Celebrate Glasshouse Country, Digger’s Retreat, Beerwah Sportsground, Maleny Golf Club, Beerwah Aquatic Centre and many more to help them enrich more people’s lives. That is the LNP’s track record for Fisher since 2016 and it is the same commitment I intend to bring to the next three years should I be given the opportunity. 23

Elected Representatives Andrew Powell

Jenny McKay

State Member for Glass House

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast

Glassies voting The nomination period for the Glass House Small Business Awards – the “Glassies” - has closed and the calibre and number of businesses and employees nominated by all of you is impressive. We are now in the middle of the voting period, which will remain open until May 13. There are 35 businesses and 20 employees you can vote for in the Glasshouse Country region, 13 businesses and five employees in Montville, 30 businesses and 18 employees in Maleny and 21 businesses and four employees in the Moreton Bay region. It is always a tight race to the finish line and every vote counts! Jump on to www.andrewpowell.com.au to register your vote. Free community barbeque On Sunday, May 26 I will be holding a community barbeque in conjunction with Roger and Lea Garner, who were recently subjected to a violent home invasion. The barbeque will be held at 3pm at the Springburn Drive Park and is free for all to attend. If you are concerned about crime in your area, please come along for a sausage sizzle and a chat with your neighbours. In particular, please attend if you are interested in helping us enliven the local neighbourhood watch and ensure a safer community. Glass House Mountains is currently encompassed by the Glasshouse Country Neighbourhood Watch based in Beerwah but needs more members. Please RSVP to Roger Garner on 5493 0123 by May 13. Labor’s health funding waste The ramifications of the current Labor Government spending $500,000 on changing the name of the Lady Cilento Hospital are still being felt state wide and Glass House is no exception. One example of where that money could have been much better spent includes a 60-year-old female constituent who at the same time this name change was occurring suffered a brain aneurysm. She was initially treated at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. She did have ongoing monitoring but unfortunately it was discovered she had a second one. When the priorities of this government were focused on changing the name of our children's hospital, she was listed as a category one patient and told she would have surgery in 30 days. One hundred and seventy-five days later that constituent contacted me after having had surgery booked, cancelled, booked, cancelled, booked and cancelled. Thankfully she did contact my office and surgery was booked within a week and she is at home recovering now. Would it not be far better for the people and patients of Queensland to know that they have a government and a health system that will take them seriously rather than one fixated with tearing down the name and the reputation of a pioneering Queensland woman in Lady Phyllis Cilento. glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell

Build a better business Our fantastic business development team is reaching out to small businesses and gauging interest for the Build a Better Business Workshop and Mentoring Program. In partnership with TAFE Queensland, this program offers the opportunity to obtain a certificate IV in small business management through group workshops and expert mentoring. To learn more, please contact businessdevelopment@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Maleny Visitors Information Centre – 25 years I’d like to congratulate the Maleny Visitors Information Centre, a remarkable not-for-profit and independent community service, on celebrating 25 years of loyal voluntary service. This wonderful information centre is fully run and primarily funded by volunteers who truly reflect our charming town and all it has to offer. It is literally in the heart of the Maleny community where visitors and locals alike are welcomed by dedicated volunteers. I can only begin to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for all those who volunteer their time and energy to this and other community groups. It is thanks to the enthusiasm and devoted efforts of volunteers that community services can continue. Speed limits in Mooloolah Following significant community requests, council is working to review the speed limits on Mooloolah Road and Bray Road. Our traffic and transportation team will be working with TMR to consider a lower speed limit in this area. Get involved in conservation Is division 5 your slice of paradise? Want to help keep it that way? Join the 1200 volunteers from across our region helping council protect and enhance our natural environment. Our volunteers help restore land purchased through your environment levy, preserve private bushland through the Land for Wildlife program, attend environmental events and help in our educational centres. If you’ve got a few spare hours or want to volunteer regularly, there’s an opportunity to suit you. Visit the ‘Get involved in conservation’ page under the environment section of council’s website for all the ways you can volunteer to look after our environment. A batty night! I recently spent the evening at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve with the bats… and some local families and friends too. We celebrated the fifth annual Australasian Bat Night with acrobats, bat-packs from the the wonderful team at Geckoes Wildlife, Jinibara Elder Jason Murphy and the very clever Clancy and Rae Hall, daughter and wife of the late great Dr Les Hall OAM. Many thanks to all who helped organise this batty-ful evening and all who attended. Don’t forget our next Mooloolah business and community breakfast meeting is Thursday, May 9 at the Mooloolah Public Hall. Community Groups Funds appreciated

Contributed by John Andrews The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild has been fortunate to receive a grant to buy a new mitre saw and towards improvements and repairs to the guild shed’s compressor. The funding of $4,475.00 was from the Queensland Government Gaming Fund and the guild is very grateful for the donation.

Peachester Garden Club

Contributed by Patricia Bradford Thanks to Jeff and Rob whose home and garden is one of our favourite meeting places, with its stunning outlook and always plenty of interest to see in the garden, it made for a great venue for our meeting. On the agenda was the future of the block of land on High Street, Friendship Day and our memorial for Nessie Pratten. We hope that the block of land on High Street will be kept as a park for the whole community and not sold off. We decided that we won’t hold a Friendship Day this year. Nessie Pratten’s memorial is now completed with just the plaque to be positioned in the school garden. We hope to hold the commemoration ceremony during our meeting in June.

Viki Blaik and Val Wrayford with their cuttings We have a competition bench every meeting that is open to all members so please bring along your blooms and have a go. We need more competition. Results of the competition bench for February were Pam Innes first with 20 points and Trish Bradford second on 13 points. For March Pam Innes was first on 21 points and Trish Bradford second on 15 points. It was very enjoyable wandering around Jeff and Rob’s garden with some of us choosing cuttings and plants to take home. Visitors and new members are very welcome to join us on Thursday, May 16 at 9.30am at Peachester Hall for our next meeting. For more information phone 5496 9169.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea The countdown is on to Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea with more than 4000 events expected to be held in Queensland this year from now until the end of June. The event is the easiest way to bring people together to raise funds that will make a big difference to those impacted by cancer. The idea is simple - just get your friends, colleagues or community together over some tea and treats to help fund the Cancer Council’s lifesaving research, prevention, support programs and information. You can host your morning tea your way: big or small, at work or home, sweet or savoury, or with a healthy twist. Every morning tea makes a difference! There are already a number of local events being planned but if you would like to host an event there is still time to find out more on the Biggest Morning Tea website www.biggestmorningtea.com.au.

Cuppa for Cancer Mooloolah Valley Slimmers will host a Cuppa for Cancer morning tea in the Mooloolah Public Hall on Thursday, May 9 at 10am. Join your family and friends and come along to share a cuppa, some delicious food, entertainment by the fabulous Seniors Ukulele Group, buy some raffle tickets and help raise funds for the Cancer Council. Entry is $10 and includes morning tea. Everyone welcome. The hall is located at 42 Bray Road, Mooloolah.

Maleny Biggest Morning Tea On Friday, May 17 the Maleny Catholic Ladies Group will host a fundraising event for the Queensland Cancer Council from 9.30am. Or does it look dehydrated, lacklustre and dull? The team at Clynic in Landsborough can give you an 02 Intraceuticals oxygen facial, which they explain as a unique experience that provides instant results you can see and feel. Clynic owner Lyn O’Connor said that just a one hour treatment will make your skin look and feel years younger, feel nourished and hydrated, while cell renewal and skin regeneration are stimulated. “An Intraceuticals facial is gentle, relaxing and soothing and is suitable for all skin types. “The appearance of many common skin ailments such as acne, rosacea, stretchmarks and scarring may be visibly improved,” Lyn said. Believing that no two skins are alike, Clynic therapists offer a 20-minute skin analysis. This examines sebum build up, hydration degree and depth of sun damage as well as dietary patterns. The findings are compiled and a suitable course of skin treatment recommended. The team at Clynic knows that every face has its own interesting and unique features that make up its individual style. Their skills and their passion are to enhance what already exists and to enrich their client’s appearance. Clynic has successfully developed a reputation of being nurturing and professional, reliable and competent in all aspects of work performed and has an excellent record in achieving high level of customer satisfaction, with client’s health and safety being the first priority for any of their treatments. Lyn originally opened Clynic in 2007 and has recently expanded and moved just 700m down the road to 3322 Old Gympie Road, Landsborough. To find out more about what they offer go to www.clynic.com.au or call 5494 8251 to book in.

As movie goers know, a common scenario for film makers is a family wedding or funeral. In ‘Everybody Knows’, respected Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (‘A Separation’, ‘The Salesman’) has chosen a Spanish family wedding, where he brings to the screen the considerable talents of husband and wife team Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. Laura (Cruz) temporarily leaves her wealthy husband in Argentina to attend the big family wedding with her daughter Irene and her son Diego. To Laura's disapproval, Irene immediately becomes attracted to a young man who tells her a secret about her mother, which he says "everybody knows" According to this informant, Laura was in love with local man Paco (Javier Bardem) in the past and broke his heart when she left. Then Laura is kidnapped and mysterious ransom messages appear, causing unfettered suspicion and opening unhealed wounds. The result is the village is plunged into a morass of fear and blame where no one knows who they can trust, a climate that the director skilfully manipulates with pitiless efficiency. Out & About Colour explosion

Contributed by Deb Lawrence Beerwah State School students and their families exploded with colour for their major fundraiser for the school’s new play equipment, held on the last day of term one. The students clearly enjoyed the explosion of colour, hay bales, tyres and other obstacles on our course. It set a new standard of fun and excitement for students and was a great way to end our school term. The school would like to thank all our families, the P&C Association and the many volunteers who helped make the colour explosion fundraiser such as success. Special thanks to Beerwah Discount Tyres & Batteries for kindly donating the tyres and to Fiona and Ian Wild for donating the hay bales. Now that the event has been run, these items will be repurposed and used in our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden.

ANZAC DAY 2019 Reflecting on sacrifices made

More than 1,000 students, staff and guests joined together at Glasshouse Christian College on the Wednesday before ANZAC Day for the school’s annual ANZAC service to reflect on the sacrifices made by the ANZACs. GCC’s special guest was Daniel Sercombe, the pastor at Cannon Hill Baptist Church who was previously a television journalist in Toowoomba before becoming fascinated with documentaries and war history. In 2012 Dan travelled to Egypt, Turkey and Israel as producer of a documentary called ‘The Charge of the ANZACs’. The documentary followed in the footsteps of the Australian Light Horse Brigade, visiting the horrors of Gallipoli and retells the victory at Beersheba in Israel. During the service Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch membership officer Leo Petrie presented principal Mike Curtis with a beautiful book, medallion and certificate in recognition of the important part that GCC has played in the community’s ANZAC Day commemorations. Distinguished guests were invited to a morning tea of lamingtons and Anzac biscuits.

Contributed by Bill Henman What a great turnout - 190 members and guests of the Maleny Garden Club at the show pavilion to hear Claire Bickle’s presenting the very interesting topic of Flower power – why flowers are making a comeback. Claire kept everyone engaged with her experiences with horticulture and permaculture, what grows well and what not to try to grow, for well over an hour. “Many flowers that have gone out of fashion are now coming back with a rush to include various hybrids that provide new splashes of colour,” Claire says. Having a wide range of career experiences, Claire is regularly heard on radio, has a regular column in newspapers and works with the community at various libraries and garden expos. Many schools have embraced gardening to engage students and show them what can be grown and how vegetables are used in cooking. Community gardens are growing in number and locations. Gardening is good for the soul and is often recommended by medical practitioners to minimise depression, anxiety and some mental conditions. Even high rise units in cities and large towns are using flowering plants and herbs to engage with nature. Members of the garden club created three garden art installations using garden tools, wheel barrows and plants to decorate the venue entrance and stage. At every garden club meeting members bring examples of flowers, bunches of flowers, natives, fruit and vegetables to be judged. This month the colour was pink and more than 90 examples were on display. If you want to be involved in gardening, guests are welcome at our meetings. Our website is www.malenygardenclub.org.

Plant of the month

Small leaved lilly pilly or riberry Syzygium luehmannii Riberry is a fast-growing medium sized coastal rainforest native tree that grows to 10m in normal gardens but can reach up to 90m in natural rainforest environments. Small, dense lance-shaped leaves, coloured pink/red when young, mature to green. Bird attracting cream/white flowers feature from November to December, with the pear shaped red berry fruit maturing from December to February (about 4mm in diameter). Known as a bush food, the berry has a tart cranberry and clove-like flavour used to make distinctly flavoured jam, sauces and even used in confectionery. You can eat the berry straight off the tree and it is often enjoyed by birds and flying foxes. The tree can be hedged and is often used as a screening plant. Plant in full sun to partly shaded positions and it will tolerate dry conditions once established. Prune regularly to promote dense new growth. Available in tube stock at Mooloolah Landcare Nursery, Glenview.

Evening VIEW Club Contributed by Glenda Galway On Easter Saturday morning, five members of the VIEW (Voice, Interests, Education of Women) Club were invited to promote our VIEW objective by cutting, buttering and offering a large number of hot cross buns to patrons of Bunnings. This was done over a two hour period for a large number of Bunnings customers, many of whom asked who we were representing. We explained that our objective was to highlight our organisation, which raises funds for the education of disadvantaged children. We thank Bunnings for this opportunity.

Mother’s Day morning tea The Glasshouse Country RSL is hosting a free morning tea for Mother’s Day. All welcome on Saturday, May 11 at 10am.

Come as you are Jesus went to a party Matthew threw for his reprobate friends. Jesus' followers were asked "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners? Jesus said to them: "It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners." Jesus' point was that he came for all who realised they need God's help. At church we've seen many people find faith and healing from addictions but only because they heard us say, "Come as you are". The path to healing starts with creating a culture of grace — accepting people "as they are" and pointing out their intrinsic value, even before they believe. It’s important to show people that God has already valued them — at the cost of sending his Son Jesus to die on a cross in their place. The more people fail, sadly, the more they can feel uncomfortable about coming to church. “Come as you are and “no perfect people allowed immediately puts people at ease because we all can definitely qualify. The church community should be a place of healing for people. In today’s generation that

Rod Jobe Church on the Rise has been spawned in social brokenness, sadly addictions rule. Emerging generations struggle with addictions to alcohol, drugs, pornography, tobacco, spending, sex, eating, working, dieting and gambling to escape the pain of brokenness. For the church to have a healing influence, it must have at its door a mat that says: “Come as you are. Just telling people their behaviour is immoral or wrong won't set them free. In fact, it may exacerbate the problem since shame often fuels the addiction. We need to have a culture that facilitates healing and growth. “Come as you are and find the healer. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Sport Winning streak continues Beegees teams hit the road running this year with some top performances, in particular the U14 boys division 2 with their Saturday, April 27 win, marking a full year with no losses. A brilliant effort saw them defeat Cooroora 1-8. Goals were scored by R Silver, J Hyndman, A Lewis (2), T Bound (2) and J McLeod (2).

Coach Tim Ross said the boys had gone from strength to strength and were only getting stronger. Team managers Blair and Fiona said they couldn’t be prouder of what the boys had achieved and plan on building further towards a successful future. Well done boys!

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Rain has made getting a game of bowls in a real challenge. Congratulations to those members who managed to get in some bowls last Tuesday morning between the showers and well done to all those who supported this event. Wednesday night bowls and some fine weather made it possible to get some of our regulars back onto the green. Some great fun and excellent bowls were played. The results saw the Outlaws showing good form in a convincing win over Amigos. Kingston Trio found some form to get back into the winner’s circle. Mighty 10 with their reinvigorated leader Grandad Yorkston leading the way scored a good win over the very confident Bridge Club. Paul Kemp feels Marg Ginns’ skip skills are being missed more than they would like to admit. They are confident next week things should be back to normal with the return of the guiding force. The Handels had a convincing win over Krackerjacks with skip Miles Allen showing that driving is a part of his DNA. Well done guys. The Tutors and Mavericks had a great tussle with the cool headed Tutors holding on for a close win. It was agreed by our Wednesday crew that any Wednesday washout will be played on the Thursday to provide bowls fun under lights for our regulars. A reminder that all nominations for the club singles championships have been posted with the draw and playing guidelines. Thanks in advance to those participating for your cooperation in helping these run smoothly.

Contributed by David Hayes The Ladies Presidents at Home (PAH) is on Monday, June 10 and they will be celebrating 60 years of our ladies bowls section. Please put your name down if you are interested in playing. It will be a big celebration for our club. Wednesday, May 1 was ladies day championship pairs and Marilyn Podmore and Rae Farrell defeated Joy Reason and Di Garland 21-19, Lee Meyers and Chris Dougan defeated Sally Squires and Sue O’Hagan 34-9. Social: Dick Coppa and Rob Scullion defeated Graham Meyers and Gail Dawson 29-8, Brian Squires and Rae Farrell defeated Di Hume and John Annakin 20-19 while Jenny Morris and Bruce Angus defeated Viv James and Joy Reason 25-21. Thursday. May 2: The winners of the day were Di Hume and Rae Farrell with two wins + 22 margin. The runner up winners of the losers were Grant Podmore and Lindsay Henderson with + 15 in the second game. The lucky draw went to Don Teriney and Allan Pashby. Pennant nominations for both men and women are being taken at the club. Sheets are up so please put your names down if interested to give us an idea of numbers. Men we are looking at division 5 for our first year along with 10 and 11. It’s a starting point to see where we stand against other clubs. District mixed pairs nominations are open and you can put your nominations in at the club. Also, Champion of Club Champion will be sent in when all club competitions are completed, with May 24 being the cut off. Men’s club championship pairs results will be in next week’s paper.

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Brenda and Gary Winter teamed up to beat Wallace Roy 7–6 in a game of golf croquet on Sunday, April 28 on lawn two. Teams were switched around and in the second game Brenda and Wallace were soundly thrashed by Gary 7–3. On lawn one Robert Elliot and Sarah Widin played a close game with Robert getting up 8–6. Meanwhile Donna Manning and Kath Smith played Stuart Craig and Ken Barker in a game where nobody seemed to be able to hit a ball or, if they could, get a break going. Still, they had a good laugh about it, with the weather beautiful and the company good, fighting their way to a mind bogglingly tedious four-all draw. The photograph was taken at a Saturday morning training session and shows the three participants after a game of low roller. Here players count the number of strokes taken to make six hoops in order. It is fun and develops hoop-making skills along with putting the correct weight on a ball. Wallace Roy (centre) went through with 16 strokes, Stuart Craig 17 and Sarah Widin 19. Congratulations to Wallace on the win – a man to be feared in endgames where two balls have been pegged out and each player is left with a ball apiece. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days on the lawns are on Thursdays and Sundays at 1pm for 1.30 pm. Our web address is https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Sport Witta Tennis Club Contributed by Maree Hooley Whistlers played at Witta against Yandina Dare Doubles. We had to wait for the court to dry and had to stop when a shower came across. However, the rest of the day was good. Lots of rallies and good shots as usual and a win. The score was 48-15 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper and thanks to Nat Rienstra for filling in. The sun was out and it was a great day of tennis when the Wildcats travelled to Yandina. They fought hard and had a fantastic win - four sets each, 36-31 games. The team was Sonia Douglas, Jenie Riding, Jo Williams and Michelle Macaree.

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 A sudden shift in your finances may be explosive and urge you to make some changes. You are about to stabilise your bottom line, maybe because of an impulsive Mother`s Day purchase to help your personal family life. You want to provide more support. The weekend lays ground work for a longterm project for fiscal professional gains. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week you will have no shortage of bright ideas. Mother`s Day weekend could be a positive aspect with good suggestions. Based on various meetings you should schedule some activities and then some backstage manoeuvring can pave the way to profitable arrangements and deals. You get a sense of what is possible to achieve. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 A swirling controversy surrounding a friend could pull you into a debate through some person’s resentment. One party is extremely resistant. It is imperative that you see the humour in it all and try to make people laugh over the silly items that they are debating. From your sensible Mother`s Day planning, the weekend plays out pleasantly. CANCER June 24 - July 22 It would be wise if you would clamp down on spending! Watch out for a slick conman who is trying to put one over on you. Spending on high-tech items will not deliver the goods that you expect. You are about to figure out certain costs relative to an overseas trip. That will bring a harsh wake up call. Mother`s Day has a surprise!

LEO July 23 – August 22 You are very lucky to have the Moon in your sign making things go your way. An exuberant celebration of life, love and happy exploration starts the week, boosting your moods. Of course there is always somebody jealous of you being too happy! The weekend sees affections reciprocated and enjoyed. It may just be breakfast in bed. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You should be in a good mood on Sunday for Mother’s Day. The weekend offers good opportunities to take time out and enjoy the mental challenge of how to please the whole family including your mother. The planet Uranus suggests an impromptu change of scene. Next week boosts your status and allows you to lead confidently. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 A good suggestion is to get up early to take advantage of a lively activity over the weekend with your best friends, family and perhaps take an adventure over Mother’s Day. Avoid moods that are grumpy. Do not let lunchtime debate spoil an otherwise harmonious activity. Best to skirt around dinner time discontent re extravagance. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Your career and money interests, whether independently or in sync with partners, benefit from a boost. Making headway with your job and even other goals such as Mother’s Day requirements suggest it is no time to let your ego get in the way. A meeting of minds between yourself and a partner generates a few sparks of new ideas.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 A sudden shift in everyday routines, and perhaps a new and exciting change, could be in the wind regarding Mother’s Day. Your love of life and spirit of impulsive adventure move you to have joyful connections and deep gratitude from parents this weekend. Enjoy the warm-hearted feelings of confidence with the Moon in Leo. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This week sees each day feeling as if it will be calm and peaceful. However, seeing things as either black or white could upend good relations with your family or friends. Some can speak out of turn today or let the cat out of the bag! It is possible that something does not seem to add up with your financial dealings. Give mother a good hug! AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 You are feeling jubilant as there is a big reason to celebrate. There is now a wonderful new phase of life and you have overcome many bumps in your life. You get to restructure and place a sound foundation on an ambition or ongoing agenda that impacts good finances. If your Mother has passed away send spiritual love and light. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Matters around the home get set in motion and have planetary support. So this is a great time for family activities and because it is Mother’s Day weekend see about having a nice adventure together. The week is positive and the benefits are sure and satisfying. Just deflect any critical views. Always have plan B on hand if needed.

Smile bright with Dental Excel.... Dr David Marley

Dr David Marley has 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. “I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued. Healthy teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in

supporting good general health,” David says. David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all. David said their aim is to provide a comprehensive service to the local community for many years to come.

Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those

annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a postgraduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.

Dr Tiffany Chan Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool UK in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in putting

people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Tiffany has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.

Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to Indigenous communities.

Shirly is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, aesthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.

Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his dental degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working in busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Raj has particular passions for endodontic (root

canal treatment) and orthodontic (braces). He is doing additional training in orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
