FROM THE EDITOR WE know the school holidays didn’t get off to a great start for many local families with the COVID lockdown, so we were keen to focus on something a little more fun and positive for our front cover for this edition.

When we saw the wonderful photos of the craziness embraced by the Mooloolah IGA staff recently for their Give Me 5 for Kids fundraising day we just had to share them.

The IGA staff’s enthusiasm, along with support from other local businesses and the generosity of local shoppers, meant they were able to raise more than $3,000, which will assist in funding the Sunshine Coast Clown Doctors service at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The inspiring program treats young patients with laughter medicine featuring jokes, music, silly dances and songs.

2021 Telstra Innovation Awards winners STUDENTS from the Glasshouse Christian College took out the top gong at the Sunshine Coast Telstra Innovation Awards on July 23 as well as the Emerging Entrepreneur Award.

Ten Sunshine Coast high schools entered the competition. The winning project was LEDPlates, which has the potential to give learner drivers a bright new way to display their L plates, along with a compatible phone app to change the plates as needed from Ls to Ps. The winning team, comprising students Arno Mens, Charlie Bidgood and Josiah from Glasshouse Christian College, led by school coordinator Tanya Cullen, were thrilled with the result.

The Emerging Entrepreneur Award also went to a Glasshouse Christian College student – Ebony Quinlan for Heart Attrack, a wearable ECG monitor for cardiovascular outpatients.

These outstanding students, along with the second and third place winners from Sunshine Coast Christian College and St Andrew’s Anglican College, will share in $10,000 worth of technology prizes for their schools including tablets, headphones, mentoring sessions and a 3D printer.

Arno Mens, from the LEDPlates project, said there was an emphasis on learning about the target market for the product.

“Going from there really taught us how to structure our pitch for the awards event and how to move forward in the future for when we go to market,” Arno said.

Students from years 9, 10, 11 and 12 on the Sunshine Coast created applications or inventions for the Sunshine Coast Telstra Innovation Awards.

As part of the program, the students were mentored by some of the sharpest technology minds and entrepreneurs in the region to help the students develop and refine their ideas.

The competition, which is delivered by Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Telstra, brings creative ideas to life while connecting students with industry mentors to develop their entrepreneurial thinking.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, who has been a champion of these awards since their inception and was part of the judging panel, said all entrants in the awards program were outstanding.

“Their innovative ideas reflected the great talent and innovation that we are nurturing here on our Sunshine Coast, particularly with our children and young people,” Mr Jamieson said.

“These skills have never been more important in the digital age.

“The young people involved in this competition demonstrate that we are well and truly on the right track in encouraging opportunities for our young people to succeed in the 21st century,” the Mayor said.

Council budget … giveth and taketh away SUNSHINE Coast Council endorsed its $816 million budget for 2021/22 on Thursday, June 24, describing it as “creating a safer, secure future for our community”.

On the good side, the budget has no increase in basic rates, gives an increased pensioner concession and they will re-establish the $5 million disaster rehabilitation reserve.

On the other hand, the council has ditched the popular 5% early payment discount, increased waste collection fees and increased the environment levy.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the budget would continue to support the region’s recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 by investing $268 million in job-creating local infrastructure projects, supporting pensioners through increased concessions and increasing spending on frontline services for the community.

“We have delivered a considered budget focused on local recovery with no increase to the minimum general rate, which is good news for a majority of ratepayers,” Mr Jamieson said.

“Our council is also responding to what matters most to our community by increasing our investment in on-the-ground services, such as parks and gardens maintenance, community facilities, sporting precincts and providing health and wellbeing programs – all of which will help more people, more often.

“The re-establishment of the $5 million disaster rehabilitation reserve and the increase in on-theground services will be funded by removing the 5% discount for on-time rates payment.

“This is a financially prudent approach to support our growing community, while avoiding an across-theboard increase in the general rate,” he said.

The early payment discount on the minimum rate is $63.45. Scrapping the discount is estimated to benefit council by up to $10 million a year.

With $5 million of that earmarked for disaster relief, the remaining $5 million will be a windfall to council’s coffers.

The Mayor said the council recognised the financial difficulties being experienced by some in the community.

“Anyone experiencing financial hardship only needs to contact council before their rates are due to arrange payment by instalments over a six-month period, without interest being charged,” he said.

Mr Jamieson said that pensioners would benefit from a 14% increase in their pensioner rate concession.

“Sole homeowners on full pensions will receive a $262 concession, an increased benefit of $32,” he said.

“Those receiving a part pension will also benefit, ranging from $9-$25, taking their concession to between $74 and $205, depending on whether they own the property solely or jointly.”

The $4 increase in the environment levy will raise $600,000, which the council says will be used to fight weeds.

“This will entail targeted weed management demonstration programs, building community, industry and other agency partnerships, and a focus on exploring and trialling new technology to improve identifying and managing weeds,” Mr Jamieson said.

To account for increased contractor expenses, the cost of collecting a standard 240L domestic wheelie bin will increase by $7.70 from $309.10 to $316.80.

Starting the detailed design of a significant two-lane upgrade to Johnston Road Glass House Mountains, and upgrades to numerous roads, playgrounds and parks are among the Sunshine Coast Council 2021/22 budget highlights for Division 1.

State Treasurer comes to Caloundra QUEENSLAND Treasurer Cameron Dick says the recent state budget builds on the government’s economic recovery plan by investing in the frontline, the future and communities across the state.

To explain the budget and some of the implications for the Sunshine Coast, Mr Dick came to Caloundra on Thursday, June 24 as a guest for the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce’s business lunch at the Caloundra Events Centre.

The opportunity was the idea of Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt, who, working with the Chamber of Commerce, thought the region had earned a visit from the Treasurer after surviving the economic impacts of COVID-19 in the past 18 months.

Mr Dick said he had been buoyed by the results of the Queensland economy over the past year, as compared to the rest of Australia, and credited good government planning for the positive position the state finds itself in.

“Our economic recovery plan has seen Queensland bounce back faster than we could have possibly believed a year ago,” Mr Dick told the crowd.

“Queensland is the first state to recover all the jobs lost due to the COVID downturn.

“In fact, jobs have grown by over 80,000 more than before, and internet job advertisements are 99.5% higher than they were pre-COVID. “Our success in managing the health challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic means that the state’s $360 billion economy has begun to recover sooner and is stronger than the rest of Australia,” Mr Dick said.

At a glance, the state budget includes: • A $3.34 billion Queensland jobs fund, including a new $2 billion Queensland renewable energy and hydrogen jobs fund, to stimulate job creation and industry development • A record $22.2 billion health investment, plus a $2 billion hospital building fund to help meet growth pressures across the health system • $14.688 billion for infrastructure in 2021-22, with 61.2% of that supporting 29,800 jobs in regions outside greater Brisbane • $16.8 billion to improve education outcomes for students and teachers • A $1.9 billion commitment over four years towards social housing and establishment of a $1 billion housing investment fund to help boost supply At a local level, the Sunshine Coast is not left out with $730 million earmarked for local infrastructure spending; $1.4 billion for health; $140.5 million for school improvements and upgrades; $38.5 million to improve social housing; and $20 million earmarked for building the Sunshine Coast Stadium.

For our hinterland region, funding has been allocated towards: • Helping fund the creation of the Australia Zoo campground ($4.2 million) • Continuing the construction of the new fire and emergency services complex at Maleny ($1.8 million) • Upgrading visitor facilities at Booloumba Creek, Conondale National Park ($900,000) • Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade stage 1 ($29.4 million from a total of $160 million)

New Beerwah traffic lights get tick of approval THE new traffic lights are up and running outside the Beerwah State School at the intersection of KilcoyBeerwah Road (locally known as Peachester Road) and Old Gympie Road.

Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said he was pleased to deliver on his election commitment to upgrade the busy intersection.

“Upgrading this intersection was a priority for the Beerwah community and the travelling public,” Mr Hunt said.

“It not only enhances safety for all road users, it also increases traffic capacity and flow.

“Before construction, the intersection often experienced delays during drop-off and pick-up periods at the Beerwah State School.”

Next on the agenda is resurfacing a 1.5km stretch on Peachester Road from Old Gympie Road to Blackbutt Street, which will start in the coming weeks.

Mr Hunt thanked the community and key stakeholders for their patience during construction.

“I especially thank the Beerwah State School community for their ongoing patience and cooperation while this important intersection upgrade was undertaken,” he said.

GC&M News asked our Facebook community if they thought the changes had made a difference. The majority response was a resounding “yes”, qualified with “about time” or “it took a long time”.

Judy Allen commented: “Hoobloody-ray! It’s about time! So tired of taking up to 12 minutes to get across there!” in reference to the extended wait times during peak hour.

Some thought a roundabout would have been preferred and others think the light change timings need to be improved.

“At long last! Need to be letting more than about three cars through at a time though,” commented Francis Mary Nicholls.

Before the changes, the road crossing required a crossing supervisor for the children to safely cross. Now there are crossing lights some felt sorry that the “lollipop lady” may be out of a job.

However, others commented that she was still there helping the kids cross safely at the lights.

One major concern is a large bump in the road at the end of the roadworks on the Beerwah side of the intersection.

“Hope they sort out the speed bump just before the left turn into Old Gympie

Road from Beerwah township,” Sarah Stout said.

“Lights are good but what about the difference in road levels??? It’s like hitting a pothole coming from town,” Rachel Verkade echoed.

When asked about the bump, Mr Hunt said that this would be sorted out soon.

“We still have to smooth out some bumps with some last minute re-surfacing and mark out some bike lanes,” he said.

“But it’s up and running and already delivering a safer intersection for motor vehicles and, perhaps more importantly, the students of Beerwah State School.”

Beerwah keeps growing

By Greg Brown WITH the popularity of hinterland towns on the increase, the pressure for infill development will only gather pace.

Following the article in GC&M News (22 June) about a development application for five units on the 901m2 block at 1 Henry Street Beerwah, two further applications have been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to increase density on existing blocks.

The first is to split the 2,023m2 residential block at 6 Simpson Street into three small land lots of 400m2 and one of 447m2, plus a driveway access.

The smaller blocks are allowable under the planning scheme, as the land is within the medium density zone.

The property is surrounded on both sides by similar existing unit and townhouse developments. The planning report states that the proposal is “consistent with the existing land use and settlement pattern of the surrounding area”.

The land and house belong to June Wimberley, who has just celebrated her 90th birthday. She has lived there for the past 67 years.

The second application, over the 3,656m2 block at 2758 Old Gympie Road Beerwah, is a proposal to split the land into four new allotments.

As the land is zoned for low density residential, the blocks must be larger than the Simpson Street proposal.

In this case, the blocks range from 966m2 to 1,233m2 in size.

The existing house will be retained on one of the new parcels.

The land is situated in front of the Twin Cedars Estate and is next door to 2752 Old Gympie Road, which has a current development application seeking to split the block into six lots with sizes ranging from 600m2 to 840m2.

The third and most recent application is for ten three-bedroom two-story units at 2 North Street Beerwah.

Five of the units have a one-bedroom self-contained space downstairs and two bedrooms with kitchen and living space upstairs, which would allow for the downstairs space to be rented as a separate space or be used as a granny flat.

The other five units have their living space downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs.

All have a two-car undercover garage, a small rear yard and access to two communal spaces.

The planning report notes that the proposal exceeds the allowable site density for the 1,946m2 block (69 dwellings per hectare rather than the maximum 50) as well as the allowable percentage site cover (49% rather than 40%).

In comparison, the similar sized block next door has eight units.

The flurry of development applications may be because the current planning scheme is poised for review and amendment, making land developers unsure of future development opportunities.

Mark said he and Lisa originally met doing a charity walk in Melbourne a few years back and bonded over their mutual love of VW Kombi vans. The couple moved to Mount Mellum in 2017 before buying their current 24-plus hectare property Mali in Crohamhurst.

Mark said that they loved the serenity of the hinterland region and had enjoyed being welcomed into local community life, which offered a peaceful and relaxed reprieve from the demands of work, travel and hectic city life.

“We love coming home and being able to get away from everything, to really enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of where we live and to take a step back and reflect on the simple things and what is really important in life. Our family and friends love it too,” he said

PEACHESTER Hall is set to get ‘all shook up’ on Saturday, August 7, when actor and entertainer Mark Andrew (Mark Tabone) stars in a very special Grease Night tribute show as a fundraiser for Peachester State School.

Mark has an extensive 25-plus years of experience as an internationally renowned entertainer and impersonator, bringing Elvis, Danny Zuko and Buddy Holly to life. The intimate show will support the local community that Mark and his wife Lisa Curry are now proud be part of.

Mark said that he had always had a passion for performing that started as a young kid singing at local church services in Melbourne. In the early 1990s Mark formed rock and roll inspired band Blue Suede Dudes and went on to tour with the legendary Chubby Checker.

From there Mark’s love of performing and his inherent appreciation of rock and roll saw him kick off his national and international touring career impersonating some of the most memorable artists of the 1950s and ’60s. He continues performing today with often sell-out shows that pay tribute to artists such as Elvis, Buddy Holly and Dean Martin.

As an in-demand Elvis tribute show performer, Mark said he had spent many years honing his craft and had been fortunate to spend time, gain insight and even tour with people who were personally close to Elvis.

He said that as a performer he was often travelling and was equally happy entertaining people at larger

What’s with the fencing at Landsborough? Maleny represented preparation for demolition and clearing.

HAVE you noticed the fencing and at Showgirl finals “This will be completed as part of government hoarding on the northern side of Caloundra Street, just before the railway crossing at Landsborough?

The fencing surrounds the houses and land along Caloundra Street, Dyer Street, up to Gantry Road and along the top boundary of the light industrial site and back to the railway line.

The land and houses were identified as being required for the Beerburrum to Nambour railway upgrade project and have been acquired by the state government.

An enquiry to the Department of Transport and Main Roads confirms that work is to start soon on a new park ‘n’ ride facility planned as part of the upgrades.

“The Landsborough Station park ‘n’ ride will be expanded as part of the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (B2N),” a departmental spokesperson said.

“Properties between Dyer Street and the train line have been bought to allow for this upgrade. Fencing has been installed to secure these properties in

the stage one early works, which are expected to start later this year, subject to environmental approvals.”

The new facility will provide about 300 additional parking spaces on the eastern side of the train station, eliminating the need for commuters to travel over the level crossing to find a parking space.

Plans also show that a new bus interchange will be built on this eastern side of Landsborough Station.

“Park ‘n’ ride expansions at Landsborough, Nambour, Beerburrum and Palmwoods are planned as part of the B2N project,” the spokesperson said.

“The upgrades will help meet current and future demand for commuters. They will also encourage people to use public transport to help manage congestion on the road network.”

Chloe, who lives on her family’s farm at Conondale, recently won the Near North Coast Sub Chamber Showgirl and Rural Ambassador finals hosted by the Gympie Show Society, paving the way for her to become a state finalist representing both the region and the Maleny Show Society.

Chloe said the sub chamber covered 15 regions in an area from the Fraser Coast to Redcliffe and she was absolutely honoured and excited to be flying the flag for the region.

“I was really pleased to have won our regional finals but also quite surprised as the other entrants would have all been very worthy winners,” Chloe said.

“I’m thrilled that Maleny finally got into the state finals again after a tenyear break and I’m honoured but also a bit nervous to be representing our region.”

“I thought the car design competition would be a great idea. Originally, I bought the car to do up to sell but then thought it would make a great local competition for the kids,” Juan said.

“Once it’s completed, I’ll either auction it off to support a local kidsrelated charity or keep it as our business courtesy car – either way, it’ll be a real buzz for the young winning artist to see their work being driven around the hinterland.”

Maleny Observatory - it’s official!

THE Astronomical Society of Australia, the peak professional astronomy organisation, has recognised the educational and community contribution and facilities operating from the Maleny Golf Club.

It has now declared the Brisbane Astronomical Society operations a designated observatory and it can now be referred to as the Maleny Observatory.

The Standards Association of Australia and New Zealand recognises the need for restrictions on outdoor lighting in the vicinity of designated observatories, so this will assist in keeping the precinct dark.

Free plants swap till you drop

A better Beerburrum Road BACK in March local Beerburrum resident Kirsty Levis was concerned about the state of the road surface along Beerburrum Road, which was dangerously uneven and posed a serious danger to motor vehicles and cyclist alike.

Taking the issue to her local state member, Andrew Powell, the Member for Glass House, a petition was organised for locals to sign that Mr Powell subsequently presented in parliament.

It seems the local voices of concern have been heard, as Mr Powell recently received a positive response from Mark Bailey, the Minister for Transport and Main Roads.

Mr Powell said while the detail in the Minister’s response was vague, he had advised that design work for extensive road treatments between Eaton Road and McDougall Road was almost complete.

“The response does indicate that Beerburrum petitioners have been heard and the road will be properly resurfaced in the near future,” Mr Powell said.

GC&M News called Mr Bailey’s office to find out more details.

Mr Bailey said the design work was almost complete on a $2.5 million plan to upgrade the road surface on Beerburrum Road at Elimbah.

“Construction will begin in the coming months to address the rough and uneven surface on a 2.5km stretch of Beerburrum Road,” the Minister said.

“Right now, we’re delivering a $28.8 million project to improve safety along sections of Morayfield Road and Beerburrum Road, and it’s important for us to get the surface right on this section.

“We have listened to the concerns of local residents and motorists who regularly use this section of Beerburrum Road and I thank them for highlighting the road’s condition through their local community.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell with Beerburrum resident Kirsty Levis “Transport and Main Roads has been working on a design for the right treatment to provide smoother and safer driving conditions for all road users.

“The treatment for Beerburrum Road will be a granular overlay from McDougall Road to just north of Eaton Road,” Mr Bailey said.

In December 2019 the speed limit on this section of Beerburrum Road was lowered from 100km/h to 80km/h as a temporary measure while a more extensive treatment was investigated to improve its condition.

Member for Pumicestone Ali King said once works were completed later this year, the original 100km/h speed zone would be reinstated.

“Beerburrum Road is a key link between the D’Aguilar Highway and Steve Irwin Way with almost 6,000 vehicles travelling this road daily,” Ms King said.

“It will improve safety and reduce ongoing maintenance costs along this section of Beerburrum Road.

“I would like to thank motorists and the local community for their patience while the design was being finalised.”

A project update will be provided to the local community before construction works begin.

THE Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) is hosting a free community plant swap meet at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre carpark at 8.30am on Saturday, August 7.

The morning will be a fun way to meet fellow gardening enthusiasts and a great opportunity to thin out unwanted plants in your garden and replace them with other varieties at no cost.

Apart from plants, any seeds, seedlings or produce will be gladly accepted. Plant containers need to be clean, plants labelled and, if possible, any growing/ care details provided.

Our scone queens shine

Farewell send off for Mrs Frohloff

By Sonia Issacs Clark THE talented Beerwah QCWA ladies took out the top trophy in two out of six categories at the recent scone bake off competition between Country Noosa, Mary Valley Country and Glasshouse Country.

Our region was proudly represented by QCWA Beerwah, Glass on Glasshouse and Burrum Coffee Shack, with CWA ladies Katrina Odgers and Dianne Kay taking out the top crown in the pumpkin and gluten-free categories.

There were some interesting inclusions in the rogue category, including “almost Turkish delight” that contained pistachios and the intriguing “champagne scone” made by the QCWA Imbil Branch ladies, who took home three trophies with wins in the savoury, fruit and rogue scone categories.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Jenny Broderick was an invited judge, joining Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton and QCWA stalwart Marcia Dorricott.

Jenny said it was a fantastic afternoon that was loads of fun for everyone involved and she was thrilled that local QCWA scone queens had done so well.

“Judging was a fully rounded process led by chief scone judge Marcia, who has been part of QCWA forever and really knows her scones,” Jenny said.

“Each scone was pulled apart and tested for taste, texture and density by Marcia and she then nominated her top two in each category, which we then cast the final vote on.

“Everyone had a fabulous time; all the volunteers did a wonderful job and Martin Duncan (Sunshine Coast Foodie) organised a great event,” Jenny said.

The afternoon proved to be a friendly but highly competitive regional bake off and a fundraiser for Sunshine Coast charity Riding for the Disabled.

Horseless parking AS part of this year’s Maleny Show, the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club was invited to look after the parking on two of the three external sites at Pioneer Village and a Tallowwood Street property.

It was a big job with 32 club members working over the two days to make sure traffic flowed and people were able to board the buses with a smile on their faces.

Club president Graham Bailey said that after a few hiccups at the start, the problems were quickly sorted out with great support from the Maleny Show Society.

Show patrons were very generous with parking donations allowing club members to donate $500 to the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue and $500 to the Cindy McKenzie Breast Cancer Program conducted at Buderim Private Hospital.

For locals not familiar with the club, it has its own clubroom on the Maleny Pioneer Village site in Maleny and at last count had 162 members with more than 270 cars on the vehicle register. Members gather every Sunday and Wednesday morning for coffee sessions or runs. If you are going past at these times drop in, check out the vehicles and talk to the owners.

The next big event on the Maleny Pioneer Village site will be the Kevin Howell Open Day on August 28. Keep an eye out for the flyers about the event.

Maleny Refugee Advocacy helps send Sahar to safety THE non-profit community organisation, Welcome to Maleny Refugee Advocacy, is currently working on a special project to support a young Hazara Afghan woman seeking settlement in Canada.

Sahar is currently in Indonesia and cannot be settled in Australia or return home to Afghanistan.

Canada presents a viable option. The Maleny Refugee Advocacy group is calling for support from the public to help reach their goal of $20,000 to help get her there safely.

Sahar, originally from a mountain village in Afghanistan, is now in her early 20s. She has had an incredible life of loss and terror but is hopeful for her future.

Sahar lost both her parents as a toddler and was raised with her twin brother by her grandmother.

When her grandmother died, the children were sent into the care of their cousin, who was entangled with the Taliban.

At just 19 years old, while she was hiding two Taliban men killed her brother and Sahar was forced to flee her village. Alone and wanted by the Taliban, Sahar fled through borders, eventually ending up in Cisarua, Indonesia.

Welcome to Maleny Refugee Advocacy recently launched a crowd funding campaign to help Sahar as part of her application process. They hope to raise the $20,000 Sahar must have to cover living expenses for her first year in Canada.

Working closely with Canadian organisation Northern Lights, the program has sponsors in place to act as Sahar’s mentors, ensuring she finds the support

needed, as well as access to education, health care and, ultimately, a safe life.

“Sahar is currently in Indonesia, with little to no rights or protection, and no ability to earn an income as a refugee,” a Welcome to Maleny Refugee Advocacy spokesperson said.

“She is an inspiring young woman who now has hope for her future.”

The Maleny Refugee Advocacy Group has so far raised about a quarter of its fundraising goal and is calling on people to chip in what they can to help Sahar to safety.

Fisher community awards recognise locals ON the eve of the recent lockdown federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace hosted an awards event for the Fisher Community Awards.

The awards saw 18 community groups, volunteers and businesses take home medallions, which also included winners from the cancelled 2020 awards ceremony.

Mr Wallace said that despite impending COVID-19 restrictions, he was determined that the awards go ahead safely this year.

Just as COVID-19 did not stop the Sunshine Coast’s volunteers in 2020 and 2021, Mr Wallace was determined to not

let it stop him from recognising their contribution to our communities.

“Over the past 12 months we have needed the resilience, the compassion and the energy of our volunteers and community leaders more than ever,” Mr Wallace said.

Two of the winners from the Glasshouse Country and Maleny readership area were Glasshouse Christian College student Charlie Bidgood, who was awarded Fisher Student of the Year 2021, and the Maleny and District Senior Citizens, who received the Fisher Senior Community Group 2020.

Mr Wallace said that Charlie was an outstanding student who had been a consistent academic leader in science, with a strong interest in the space industry. He had secured work experience with Coletec, an Australianowned company specialising in robotics, coding and prototyping.

“Charlie marries IT and engineering and already has grand ideas that recently inspired his science teacher to tout him as the student most likely to be a young millionaire,” Mr Wallace said.

“Charlie’s focus and dedication to science is extremely impressive but beyond his academic achievements he is also a keen motorbike and mountain bike fan and has attained a 1st dan black belt in taekwondo.”

Margaret Martin and Lyn Burgess from Maleny Seniors with Andrew Wallace (centre) Mr Wallace said the seniors group had been serving the district since its formation in 1977 and had more than 90 members ranging in age from 60 to 99.

The organisation assists with the social aspect of the ageing and meets every Wednesday for indoor bowls and on Friday morning for coffee and fun. Its Busy Needles group knits and crochets rugs, beanies and toys to donate to the Salvation Army, local care homes, a premie babies organisation and the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital.

Throughout the year the seniors supported various local groups with financial donations, including Range Care, Soldiers Memorial Hospital, the Rural Fire Brigade, Life Flight and Cancer

Council of Queensland plus a $200 high school bursary for a year 7 student.

“I want our part of the Sunshine Coast to be the place to be for education, employment and retirement, and that’s why I set up these awards,” Mr Wallace said.

“I want to do everything I can to recognise and encourage the people in our schools, our workplaces, healthcare facilities and community groups who are making that a reality with their work in the community. I am already looking forward to coming back next year with the fifth Fisher Community Awards,” he said.

Initial nominations were called for from the public with well over 100 received in both 2019 and 2020.

Calendar winner announced Rotarian Lionel Tilley congratulates Kay Eastmure

THE ever-popular Maleny Rotary Calendar photo competition, now in its 15th year, was recently judged with first prize to Kay Eastmure for her ‘Sunset Glow’ image.

Second prize went to Wen-Chi Fan and third to Paul Mellick.

The Rotary Club thanked all the photographers who entered into the spirit of the calendar competition by submitting their photos.

The calendar is a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Maleny and its popularity doesn’t seem to be waning.

Rotarian Lionel Tilley said it never ceased to surprise members how many people sent the calendars to their friends and relatives, even overseas, to show how great it was to live in the hinterland region.

“For tourists to the area, they are a must have souvenir,” Lionel said.

The calendars will be on sale from late August at various locations in Maleny. You can go to the Rotary Club website at www.rotarymaleny.org to be directed to one of the outlets. The club is looking forward to doing it all over again next year!

Leos support others MALENY Blackall Range Leo Club recently presented primary school chaplain Rebecca Francis with 20 toiletry packs for distribution to local students.

Star Discount Chemist Maleny stretched the club’s money further by donating the packs containing three of the necessities and the club purchased the rest from half the proceeds of a trivia night held earlier in the year.

Another $300 of the funds raised was donated to Maleny High School to help purchase a new school banner.

Donation to rural firies

LANDSBOROUGH Hotel owner Terry Morrow recently presented a cheque for $1,148 to the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade from donations made through collection tins at the pub and the sale of surplus sporting memorabilia.

Brigade first officer Mark Jakeman thanked the Landsborough Hotel for the donation and said the funds would go towards purchasing the brigade’s new all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

The brigade used a combination of grants and community funds to buy the vehicle, which is the first ATV fire-fighting appliance on the Sunshine Coast.

The ATV is fitted with fire-fighting capabilities allowing the brigade to access areas where larger appliances can’t go due to their size. It is used for reconnaissance, fire fighting, patrolling and mopping up.

The ATV is a valuable resource not only for the local community but will also be available to surrounding communities.

Simon Denver WHEN asked to describe what he does; multi-award winning director, writer and actor Simon Denver says he likes to add “journeyman” to his role description.

He feels that, even after 40 years of working successfully in the theatre industry, he is still continuously learning and honing his craft.

As a writer, Simon has an impressive catalogue of more than 100 plays, musicals and cabaret scripts performed and published under his name, with a similar number of directing credits.

He has enjoyed an extensive career as a performer and as an acclaimed theatre director and has led a diverse range of professional and independent productions.

A long-term Maleny resident of 46 years, Simon is a founder of the Suncoast Repertory Theatre and has enjoyed a professional career that has traversed an enormous range of creative projects. His work includes writing for TV and radio, working in theatre in education, and directing and performing in classic Shakespeare productions, rock operas, musicals and theatre restaurants.

Simon said he had always held a fascination for theatre that most likely

evolved from growing up with a mother who was a drama theatre teacher.

With COVID restrictions limiting live performance work over the past 12 months, Simon said that for the first time in years he had a bit of time up his sleeve, which he was happy to put towards working with the Maleny Players who will be performing his cabaret show ‘Secrets’ at the end of July.

Simon has written and will direct the production. He said that while writing the script he found the intriguing theme of secrets allowed a lot of material to be explored. However, after 40 years of writing, he was able to put together a script relatively quickly.

“What I have found is that as you get older you have more faith in your abilities and you can use your acquired skills and knowledge to back yourself and not spend time sweating over the small stuff as you know what works and what doesn’t,” Simon said.

He describes the production as a pastiche of comedy, drama and intrigue and said it would be performed by the Maleny Players alongside some members of the Suncoast Repertory Theatre.

When asked, Simon said there were many things he enjoyed about working

“I love that in live theatre we essentially have a contract to pretend with the audience in real time, and if the performance is good enough then the audience will be drawn into pretending along with us,” Simon said.

“I also love the adrenaline of live performance and the heady mix of excitement and fear!”

‘Secrets’ will feature a cast of about 20 and, according to Simon, it promises to be a paella of fun and fury!

The production will run for four performances at the Maleny Playhouse from Friday-Sunday, July 30-August 1, with sessions at 7.30pm on the Friday and Saturday nights, and matinee performances at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.

IGA staff clown around for charityy THE team at IGA Mooloolah take their jobs very seriously but they also clearly know how to have a bit of fun to benefit the local community. They recently hosted a fundraising day as part of Mix FM’s Give Me 5 campaign to raise funds for the Sunshine Coast Clown Doctors Service at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital reaching $3,046 as part of the combined total of $10,500 raised by the 5 White’s IGA stores on the Sunshine Coast.

YOU Maleny Community Precinct walkway

I wish to sincerely thank all the wonderful people who have constructed (and continue to upgrade) the rainforest walk around the Maleny Golf Club. Most afternoons my sweet dog Ellie and I walk right around the loop.

Lots of weeding and hard work must go into keeping the path clear. Joggers and walkers alike enjoy this diverse environment. I understand a lot of the workers are volunteers, which makes our appreciation all the more heartfelt.

Transport Levy

Surely I am not the only hinterland resident who is unhappy with the fact that we have paid a transport levy to council for years and reap no benefits from the fee – kind of like paying the fare and not being allowed to board the bus.

The new transport plan has no benefit for the hinterland.

The proposed rail is to get coast people to work in Brisbane, which they can get a bus to catch, while we still drive. I have spoken to both Anna and Rick over the years about the levy and they both followed the party line “greater good”, etc. I’m fine with no bus lines, I don’t expect them in a more rural environment.

I’m not fine paying for something I am not receiving.

I called the Queensland Ombudsman about this and was told to make a formal written complaint to council and, depending on the response, they would decide whether the complaint has merit.

Was looking through the council web pages today for another reason and came across something interesting in the levy section. The transport levy is across the board but when it comes to the Rural Fire Charge it says: “Council charges those considered to benefit, or have special access to, the service, facility or activity supplied”.

Why does this not apply to the transport levy that does not ‘benefit’ the hinterland?

I think it is time for the people of the hinterland to take a stand against council. Maybe if enough of us make formal complaints and contact the Ombudsman something can be done. I for one am tired of the coast-centric view of council.

It’s about respect

Why isn’t basic respect taught in our schools today? Isn’t life and growth as a human being about mutual respect, ie, boys respect girls and girls respect boys, and the respect they should have for themselves?

Why then is it that boys are subjected to a school curriculum that requires them to be ashamed of being a male? Why must they apologise for the supposed sins of their male gender, now deemed to be the war criminals in the battle of the sexes? In fact, why is it that every negative portrayal of human interaction in the media is that of a white male? Why are the majority vilified by the actions or words of a small minority? We are all not what a few do! Am I to continually apologise for being a male?

Why is it that increasingly life skills can no longer be left to a parent to hand down to their children to reflect their values, while encouraging in a respectful environment? This appears to now be the domain of the ‘social engineering’ department of our education system.

It is about time we stand up for sanity and common sense before the supposed cure turns out to be worse than the supposed disease.

The Smithsonian Institution says that the Native American people are immensely proud of the fact that their forebears were hunter-gatherers because that is the most ecology sensitive and wildlife friendly way to live.

If you have lived on a farm and had to eat your lunch quickly before the looming dust storm dumped grit in your tucker, you would know that some farming methods are not sustainable or good for the soil.

Why then is Bruce Pascal et al trying to make us feel ashamed to admit that our ancestors were hunter-gatherers? We were the original greenies! The very first environmentalists! It was the Europeans who started the farming craze.

So we don’t need books of fairy stories, unless the proceeds from their sale goes towards real Koori education. There is a Koori lady out at Barcaldine running a school for Indigenous kids. She could use all the help she can get.

Opened up debate

The follow-up letter from Mr Provic (GC&M News, June 8) is a debate now seeming to be in many Australian newspapers. Were the First Nations people hunter-gatherers or did they have systems that involved agriculture, and dwellings that were permanent or semipermanent in some cases?

Basically, it’s two white-fellas here slogging away in the GC&M News about who and what did the original peoples do.

We can read and focus on research but in the long run we are not black-fellas and don’t have that same relationship with the land that 80,000 plus years gives - though we do try. But 230 years isn’t as much as thousands.

The discussion triggered in the last weeks by the book ‘Dark Emu’ and articles by and about Peter Sutton and Keryn Walshe, has set the debate rolling again accusing Bruce Pascoe of making things up about agriculture. Its Culture Wars Two and the ongoing debate about the nature of those here in the past before western cultures came along is increasing - even here!

I think we have to take our hats off to Pascoe who says that he welcomes the works from Sutton and Walshe, as it continues the national discussion which began years ago, and opened up other ways of thinking about our first inhabitants that hasn’t happened in debates before.

Pascoe’s book ‘Dark Emu’ has opened up a can that gives both worms and sustenance – we are going to see the results of it over the coming years. And now his new book with Vicki Shukulogru called ‘Loving Country’ is out. We await the results there as well.

Re: Voluntary Assisted Dying laws

I would ask all Members of Parliament to carefully consider before they cast their conscience vote on Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) what it would be like to spend months suffering unspeakable agony and discomfort prior to dying. I have personally watched family members and friends go through this and no amount of palliative care was enough to save them from this cruel end to their life.

Parliamentarians are elected by the people to represent the people.

Considering an overwhelming majority of Queenslanders want VAD to be voted into law as an available end-of-life choice for the suffering and dying, I would ask all members of the Queensland Parliament to put their personal political and religious views aside and please vote YES. Kill the pain not the patient

Dr Craig Glasby of Dying with Dignity claims that the Queensland Labor government’s euthanasia and assisted suicide Bill has “many safeguards” (GC&M News, June 22).

Yet there is no requirement for terminally ill patients before they request euthanasia to see a specialist in their condition so they can get the best care, or a psychiatrist to ensure they are of sound mind and do not have depression, or a palliative care specialist to relieve their pain.

No safeguards are effective when it comes to euthanasia.

If euthanasia was legalised, any terminally ill patients, who need love and care, would feel pressure, whether real or imagined, to do “the right thing” and request euthanasia so they are not “a burden on their family”.

Allowing euthanasia would be at the cost of putting the vulnerable elderly at risk of coercion, damaging trust between doctor and patient, devaluing human life, and undermining society’s efforts to reduce the overall suicide rate.

There is no dignity in death through a lethal injection or a poison cocktail.

Doctors should kill the pain, not the patient.

False intolerable suffering claims

David Muir of the Clem Jones Group ought to be aware that he is presenting a false choice between “intolerable suffering and a dignified death” (GC&M News, June 22).

This simply does not have to be the case with the advanced health care available today in Australia.

An open letter to politicians signed by hundreds of Australian palliative care specialists stated that only two in 100 palliative care patients would be in moderate or severe pain at the end of life. It explained: “In these unusual cases where when all other methods of palliation for pain and other symptoms is inadequate, and if the patient agrees, palliative sedation therapy is available to provide adequate relief of suffering.”

What the Queensland Labor government should do if they really care about the terminally ill is to boost the palliative care budget by $275 million a year, as called for by Palliative Care Queensland, in order to ensure that all Queenslanders have access to this wonderful service if needed.

Otherwise, the message they will be giving the public is this: Your government will help you kill yourself but won’t provide you the care you need to relieve your suffering.

What some have said about music WHAT does music mean for you? You can probably imagine the range of answers one might get, especially if asking non musicians. It didn’t surprise me to find that the deeply spiritual Albert Einstein, possibly ‘the’ genius of the 20th century, was also a musician.

He said: “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”

Some of history’s most important writers and philosophers have recognised music’s essential part in their life.

Plato, some 2,500 years ago, extended that, writing: “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

Shakespeare, never short of a clever word, said: “The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils… Let no such man be trusted.”

If you are one of the few who feel no music in yourself, I fear you may not relate to that passage but, given that almost everyone I’ve met is comforted by music in their life, I’d like to share more such passages from individuals who weren’t known as musicians but knew music.

Kindy kids ideas contribute to mural LANDSBOROUGH Community Kindergarten takes pride in educating children about Australia’s Indigenous culture.

Learning through story time, song and daily naturebased activities, children are encouraged to embrace the Indigenous connection to land and country.

Thanks to a successful grant from the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains, the kindy was recently able to collaborate with Kerry and Jess from TribalLink and, utilising ideas from all the children, this beautiful mural was created telling the story of how flora and fauna help each other to thrive.

Students dance their way to success BEERWAH State High School’s very own Beerwah Dance Company students competed at the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge on Sunday, June 27 with great results.

The challenge categories included contemporary, lyrical jazz, hip hop, jazz, glee and student choreography with a category for years 7-9 and a category for years 10-12.

Beerwah High staff were proud of the students’ results with the Junior Lyrical and Junior Musical Theatre, as well as the Senior Contemporary and Senior Jazz B coming home with first place awards.

New management for same great Cappriccio’s team CAPPRICCIO’S Italian Restaurant at the Riverside Centre has been a Maleny institution since Phil and Sonya Venditti opened the restaurant in 1995. When Phil and Sonya retired three years ago, their children Tamara and Dominic, aka Tam and Dom, stepped up to take over the restaurant.

The Venditti family decided it was finally time to pass the restaurant onto a new owner and Vineeth Kotha purchased the business in June.

Vineeth, originally from NSW, moved to Maleny recently and is excited to be able to marry his love of cooking with the excitement of owning his own restaurant.

The best news for locals is that Vineeth has no plans to implement any drastic changes at Cappriccio’s.

“I really want to keep everything to the same high standard that locals have come to expect while learning from the best as Tam and Dom will be staying on and teaching me and my new team members the ropes for at least the next couple of months,” Vineeth said.

“I do have some ideas that I am wanting to try but we will be keeping the old favourites.

EVERY school has maintenance and upgrade issues. Every year the Education Department works to address these. State budget response

In the last Parliamentary sitting, the state government handed down its budget for the coming year. Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, it failed to address many of the glaring problems and concerns facing the Glass House electorate and broader Queensland.

This budget will not build the infrastructure we need in Glass House.

Perhaps the most disappointing part is that the government has not brought forward the funding for the much-needed Maleny-Kenilworth Road upgrade at Cambroon. It is still not slated to commence until 2023-24.

COUNCIL’S latest major grants round awarded more than $930,000 to 112 volunteer groups across the region. Locally, we’ll see new fencing for the Rocky Creek Scout campsite, installation of large shade structures for Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club and Baringa Football Club, new junior goal posts for Glasshouse Hinterland Australian Football Club and a large storage shed for QCWA Beerwah. Time to unite our full vaccinator workforce Safety warning about restraining kids THE Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) is calling on all governments to urgently allow pharmacists across the nation to administer COVID-19 vaccines in the wake of Australia’s most recent lockdowns.

PSA national president Associate Professor Chris Freeman stressed the importance of involving the country’s most accessible healthcare workforce in the vaccination rollout.

“Pharmacists are our most accessible healthcare workforce and many pharmacists are already trained immunisers,” Professor Freeman said.

“Pharmacists are already administering COVID-19 vaccines in some community pharmacies in remote and rural areas, in vaccination hubs and in GP clinics around the country. But we have thousands of other community pharmacists who are ready and raring to go to help protect their communities.

“Ensuring as many Australians as possible can access vaccinations is critical if we are to keep ahead of this deadly disease. Allowing community pharmacists to vaccinate across Australia will massively increase ease and accessibility,” he said.

Professor Freeman said many regional and remote communities did not have access to health services such

as hospitals or local GP clinics, making community pharmacists ideally placed tto support the rollout. He ssaid 97% of the population iin capital cities and 65% in rregional areas lived within 22.5km of a community p pharmacy.

“However, even in capital cities, we know that many people are struggling to get appointments at vaccination hubs, with some queuing for hours,” he said.

“At a time when Australians are being encouraged to restrict their movements and avoid crowds, these long queues are very concerning.”

Professor Freeman said pharmacists were covered by the federal government’s indemnity scheme.

“This is not about funding, politics or protecting turf. This is a pandemic and PSA’s interests lie in enabling pharmacists to support their patients and public health during this time.

“Governments need a patient-centric approach to put the community first.

“Pharmacists need to be activated now, so that as more supply becomes available they are already on board and can be fully utilised to vaccinate in pharmacies alongside vaccinations occurring as part of the general practice network and vaccination hubs,” Professor Freeman said.

RACQ has revealed that thousands of drivers risked the lives of children by failing to properly restrain them, prompting an urgent safety warning.

The latest data from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, analysed by RACQ, revealed more than 1,700 people were fined in 2020 in Queensland for restraint-related offences involving children.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said it was disturbing that so many drivers were risking the lives of babies and children.

“Failing to make sure they’re safely restrained could lead to the unthinkable in a crash,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Police caught drivers either incorrectly restraining their child, having their child in an incorrect restraint or some not having their child buckled up at all.

“We want to remind parents and caregivers they must make sure their children are buckled up properly.

“Aside from the obvious tragic consequences, they also risk a $400 fine and three demerit points.”

Ms Ritchie urged parents to ensure their children were also in the correct restraint for their age.

“Once your child is seven years old it doesn’t automatically mean they should come out of a booster seat,” she said.

“They should be 145cm tall so the seatbelt is able to secure them in a crash. Check the shoulder height markers on the restraints to see when it’s time to upgrade.

“Babies under six months of age need to be in a rear-facing restraint but best practice is to keep them rear facing for as long as possible, up to two years old.”

Local Christian singer-songwriters Anna Beaden and Kemy Ogendi are hitting the road together on their coast-to-country concert series. The final destination on the tour is the Sunshine Coast with a finale concert in Landsborough.

MY citrus trees have a silver mould on their leaves. I wonder if you could give me an idea of what to do?

I wonder if you would know the name of this plant. They have them in apartments blocks, I think in Caloundra.

They grow very large about 3-5 feet (1-1.5m) and have a spike but they look quite magnificent. I have attached a photo of a small one that is about 3 feet x 1 foot wide (1m x 0.3m).

Sue Wilmott, Beerwah This is one of the decorative agaves – most likely called Agave angustifolia Marginata (or variegated Caribbean agave).

Like you say, they look attractive but can grow very large if given enough space – so keeping it in the pot like you have is a good idea.

Also, they have a rather nasty sharp hard spine on the end of their leaves and hooked spikes along the leaf margins as well.

The end spine has a waxy coating that can result in a painful swelling if you get jabbed, which isn’t hard to do if you get too near them.

The sap is also a skin irritant, so take care if you’re cutting back the leaves.

Like all agaves, they are very drought tolerant and live for a long time, so they are great set and forget plants.

They will send up a flower spike after a number of years – nothing spectacular, but interesting nevertheless. The flowers will turn into multiple tiny plantlets.

They grow lots of pups from around the base, so you can end up with lots to repot (watch the spines) and give away if you want.

Another word of warning (apart from the painful spikes) – they are considered an aggressive environmental weed in bushland areas, so be wary if you live around bushland reserves or national parks.

So enjoy the unusual look of this agave … but definitely take care where you grow it (unless you want to keep unwanted visitors away, for which they are very suited) … ouch!

It looks to me, Patti, that it could be one of two things.

It’s most likely the result of damage caused by a mite infestation (probably broad mite but maybe two-spotted mite).

Mites are microscopic so you won’t see them. Citrus is a favourite of the two mentioned along with (unfortunately) a lot of other garden edible plants.

The other thing it may be related to is the brown scale I can see on the leaf.

This is a very common problem in citrus and, when it gets serious, you end up with sooty mould covering the leaves.

However, in the early stages of the infestation when the baby insects (yes, scale is an insect pest) damage the leaf skin (or epidermis) it causes it to have this silvery look.

In both cases, the treatment is the same – a horticultural white or pest oil.

This, mixed with water as per the label and liberally sprayed on both sides of the leaves, smothers the mites and the scale insects, causing them to suffocate.

It won’t work if it rains within three days of spraying.

There are other options if the problem persists – like Naturasoap.

Mites are eaten by predatory ladybirds but if the mites breed rapidly, the ladybirds can’t get on top of the problem. The oil spray helps them out and it’s non-toxic to the ladybirds.

Scale isn’t controlled naturally by any other beneficial insect, so the oil spray is the only option.

Ants actively ‘farm’ the scale insects as the scale produces a sticky sweet substance (honeydew) that the ants eat.

The same honeydew is the cause of sooty mould growing on the leaves.

What we tend to think of as a traditional hedge is a one species planting of the same tough, readily pruned, bushy to the ground species that is basically a living fence and not much more than that. However, this is a relatively recent invention of our production line landscaping and the hedges of old contained a diverse range of species and resources for both humans and wildlife. Multiple row or staggered plantings that include shrubs and groundcovers such as Lomandra can help create a dense privacy and noise screen.

Some of the great local plants for creating hedges include most of our Lillypilly’s and Myrtles such as Creek Lillypilly - Acmena smithii, Silky Myrtle - Decaspermum humile, Grey Myrtle – Backhousia myrtifolia, Riberry - Syzygium luehmannii (dwarf forms), Scrub Cherry - Syzygium australe (dwarf forms). However, there are so many more including Common Aspen - Acronychia oblongifolia, Muttonwood - Myrsine variabilis, White Alder - Callicoma serratifolia, Blueberry Ash -Elaeocarpus reticulatus, Velvet Leaf - Callicarpa pedunculata and Bottlebrushes - Callistemon sp. just for starters.

WE haven’t played a lot of bowls in the last two weeks due to the rain and the lockdown, however, much has been happening behind the scenes.

We had a working bee a few weeks ago when repairs, maintenance and trimming took place - thanks to all the volunteers who took part.

Our honour board will soon be updated as will our Twilight Bowls trophy and the club’s new website will be completed shortly.

We have applied for a grant and more applications are in the pipeline, the fire brigade visited us and the Queensland Ambulance will be assisting with training on our defibrillator.

At our last Twilight Bowls there were some very close games. JAM and the Mavericks had a great tussle with some excellent bowling by Lorrie Fawns, Brad Williams and Bob Galligan, with JAM winning by 1 point. Mo and the Marauders gave the Mighty 10s a fright and beat them 8-7; it was a low scoring tight game with neither side giving away much. The game of the night was the Flamingos playing against the Outlaws; Christine Lister and Min Chatterton led

from the front for the Outlaws, whilst Trish Edwards and Liz Williams were the pink backbone of the Flamingos. The final result was 8-8, a fair result. Pegasus beat a full-strength Tutors 19-6 despite Bryan Fripp playing some wonderful bowls with his new stick. The Golfers, fielding two newcomers, couldn’t do much against the Oblimeys who won comfortably. The big news of the night was that Paul Kemp finally managed to get a toucher, his first one in 26 games, and won himself a chocolate bar. With 6 more games to go, it is still wide open at the top of the table with only 8 points separating the top 10 teams.

Our monthly pairs competition saw Adam Kelly and Ray Auer from Woodford take home the honours. Not to be outdone, local team Mick Bulger and John Kapetanic, boosted by an excellent lunch, comfortably won the second round.

Our games on Tuesdays start at 9am, Twilight Bowls on Wednesday start at 6pm for 6.30pm, and Scroungers on Friday start at 1pm for 1.30pm. Come along and join the fun.

After a break in the winter weather, Witta Wompoos had a very tough battle with a strong Nambas team who dominated in both men’s and women’s matches. Haydyn Craven and Tony Keenan produced a great win 6-1 to lighten the load as well as Jim and Paula Cudmore successfully winning the final mixed doubles together 6-2.

Several close tie break sets unfortunately went the opposition’s way, otherwise the games were hotly contested. Thanks to Haydyn, Tony, Andrew Blows, Jim and Paula and particularly Brenda Warner for making the drive from Gympie to play some very strategic tennis. First round of the Vets tennis has been completed with the next round on July 27.

Nambour victorious with eight sets to Witta’s four. The men played particularly well – with very close sets and three tie-breaks throughout the day. Wikings were Glenn Smith, John Bradshaw, Mike Hooley and Mal Wright making his Wikings debut, along with Maree Hooley and Pauline Fraley.

THURSDAY, June 17 was an exciting and busy day for our players, with our team of Gillian Bradley and Janelle Wilson part of the Maleny Nambour team playing in the Ricochet Pennants at Nambour, taking on a team from Headland Buderim. In a close fought game, Gillian and Janelle prevailed over Lesley Johnston and Pam Shepherd 12-11. In the singles, Bill Habner beat Lesley 19-10, while Janelle finished ahead of Pam 17-13.

Meanwhile, on the same day in Maleny, we had our regular social play day. Bev Sockhill and Sally Adams teamed up to make 9 hoops against a valiant Helen Andrews who made 6.

Wallace Roy and Kath Smith played Lynette Evans and Sarah Widin to win 16-13 in a well fought match up. Ken Barker played Donna Manning in a very even game, with each making 6 hoops.

Sunday, June 20 offered another brilliant, clear day for club croquet and a very pleasant afternoon on our lawns with several games played. Nick Cram defeated Kath 16-9; Vince Carbery won against Val Carbery and Stuart Craig 7-5; Miggy Mackey teamed up with Wallace against Helen A and Lynette to win 10-8. Sarah 19 played a cracking game against Janelle 4.

In other club news, on Friday, June 18 we welcomed a group from Caloundra for a morning of golf croquet. Several rounds were played with a friendly cup of tea. It was a great way to spend a beautiful sunny winter’s day here in Maleny on our lovely lawns.

Gloomy weather moved in on Thursday, June 24 yet the play was bright. Janelle played well against Wallace beating him 14-7. Val and Bev had a tight finish against Helen A and Vince, ending up slightly ahead 12-0.

Donna, Ken and Janelle competed in the Queensland championships recently. Ken and Donna played in the open at Toombul from June 19-22 with mixed results but had an enjoyable four days thanks to the hospitality of the Toombul club. Janelle played on June 26-27, also at Toombul, acquitting herself commendably as the only fourth division player in the third and fourth divisions.

Perfect weather on Sunday, June 27 encouraged enough players out to necessitate the use of two lawns. On lawn one Helen A and Lynette scored 9 hoops against Kath and Stuart who made 6. On lawn two Sarah beat Vince 21-11 while Miggy pegged out against Wallace beating him 26-4.

Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Coaching is available on Saturdays at 8am.
