Why not make a difference with the ‘gift of literacy’? Beerwah and Maleny Libraries invites you to join in the annual Books 4 Kids Christmas book drive from November 9 until December 11 so you can brighten a child’s life with the gift of reading.

You can simply buy a new children’s book and drop it into your local library branch (no need to wrap it as the Salvation Army is taking care of this).

At our local BOQ branches at Beerwah and Maleny they are supporting The Smith Family’s Toy & Book Appeal, so expect the banks to be transformed into Santa’s Little Workshop from November 6. Throughout the month, they will be collecting (unwrapped) gifts for children in disadvantaged families so that they will wake to a gift on Christmas Day. The Smith Family has indicated there is a particular need for gifts that target the nine to 12-year-old age group, such as educational games, sports equipment or children’s novels.

While you won’t see the look on the recipient’s faces, at least you can feel it in your heart!

Local News SES on the job for 40 years This year, the Queensland State Emergency Services has been operating for 40 years. They recently held awards ceremonies across the state recognising the contributions that their members have made during that time.

Maleny's William Sebbens was awarded with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Plaque and Meritorious Clasp for 40 years’ and Pamela O'Connor received her 35 year Clasp for service to the SES. Julie Peters received a National Medal for 15 years service and Jared Ashcroft, Daniel Sandeman and James Drake were awarded with the Queensland State Emergency Service Meritorious Service Medal for 10 years plus service to the SES.

Local university student impresses Paramedic Science students from the University of the Sunshine Coast showed they were a force to be reckoned with at an international emergency simulation competition in Melbourne recently.

A team of third-year students including Cassie Luck from Mooloolah, Fran Watt from Beerwah, and Laura Bitcon – finished second out of 10 teams in the annual Ferno Australian Simulation Challenge.

The challenge is run as part of the Student Paramedics Australasia International Conference, and sees student paramedics enter simulated emergency scenarios ranging from a heart attack to a trapped and injured patient.

A panel of judges assesses teams on their ability to quickly assess a scene, manage risks and treat patients using best practice.

USC Paramedic Science student Cassie Luck said her team was thrilled to have taken out second place in the demanding competition.

“It was pretty amazing to receive that recognition,” Cassie said. “We dealt with a scenario of a campfire explosion and our team communicated really well throughout the challenge.

“It was obvious that all our effort in preparing and practising for the event paid off.”

Lecturer in Paramedic Science Belinda Flanagan said all USC students involved had worked hard to master their skills in the lead-up to the competition.

“It’s fantastic to see our students stack up so well against teams from universities around Australia

“A lot of training goes into it for them, because they have to deliver spot on, evidence-based practice in the simulation settings.

“The students need to have a level-headed approach, excellent communication skills within the team, and quickly develop a plan of attack.”

Ms Flanagan said it was critical that students had hands-on, practical experience in working as paramedics.

“At USC, the Bachelor of Paramedic Science includes practicum opportunities in each year of the three-year degree, which is really important for their transition to the workforce,” she said.

“Many of our courses offer simulation as an additional learning activity to help develop students’ clinical decision-making skills.”

British Bulldogs come to Beerwah Women’s international rugby league came to Beerwah Tuesday last week, when the UK Batley Bulldogs played against the Sunshine Coast Falcons, hosted at our own Beerwah Bulldogs home ground.

The two women’s under 15 teams played in front of an large and enthusiastic crowd under the spotlights of the Beerwah Sportground fields.

According to Club President Steve Savage, the game was very competitive.

“Both teams played some very good football, with the girls displaying an excellent range of skills, commitment and sportwomanship,” he said.

“Both teams showed just how the game of rugby league should be played … with talent, heart, flair and fairness.

“Although the Sunshine Coast Falcons girls were the eventual winners, beating the never-say-die Batley girls 22 to 12, the real winner on the night was the sport of women’s rugby league.”

The Batley Bulldogs Rugby League Football Club

is an English professional club from Batley, West Yorkshire. Batley is one of the original 22 rugby football clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895.

Since starting three years ago, the Batley Bulldogs under 15 girls team, have twice been UK national champions and claim now to have made history by being the first girl’s rugby league team to tour Australia.

Steve said that Queensland Rugby League contacted the Sunshine Coast Falcons to host one of the tour games, and that Beerwah was their first pick for the match.

“The Beerwah Bulldogs have championed the sport of women’s rugby league for many years, and so that commitment was recognised with us being asked to host the game and the after-game presentations and celebrations.

“It was probably one of the best nights we’ve had at the club for quite a while. The girls from Batley are definitely welcome back to Beerwah anytime.

It was a great endorsement for the girls and

women's game of rugby league,” he said.

Three Beerwah Bulldogs girls played in the Sunshine Coast team – Paige Lawrence, Rhianna Oschar and Taylah Temple.

After the game, two other Beerwah women’s rugby league representative players – Courtney Lockwood, who plays for Queensland and Annette Brander, who plays for Australia – presented awards and spoke about their experiences in women’s representative football.

According to a Batley Bulldogs official, they thoroughly enjoyed their Beerwah experience.

“Beerwah Bulldogs colours are blue down under [being only slightly different to the Batley Bulldogs], but it feels like home. There is a good community-ground vibe here,” he said.

“The women’s World Cup will be played in Australia in 2017. Now that’s something for our girls to aspire to, as they sing their way back to the accommodation, heads held high.”

Neighbourhood Centre doorknock

Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, in collaboration with Hinterland Community Development Association, have been reaching out to the local community by knocking on doors and asking people to share their thoughts about what it’s like living in Glass House.

The ‘getting to know the community’ door knocking project started in late August and will run until the end of the year. A small group including the Neighbourhood Centre’s Helen Wilkinson, and local community development workers Jenny Blagdon and Ana Greenfield, have been out and about in the community. The group say the project has been a lovely way of getting to know local people and understanding the essence of what makes up the local community and what connects them.

As the Glass House area continues to change with new developments and an increase in residential movement, the Neighbourhood Centre is keen to connect more with local residents.

The informal conversations also provide a touchstone for how the Centre can also evolve and grow to best reflect the community.

Over 50 informal conversations and chats have already taken place, with many residents generously giving their time – often chatting for over an hour. From the conversations a number of observations have been shared, such as discussions around ageing and being able to stay in the family home, to adjusting to the increased growth of the town. Multi generational living appears to be on the rise and while many people spoke of feeling connected to their local

There is a general sense that people genuinely love living in the area.

Jenny says the group have met some wonderful characters and have heard many interesting and inspiring local stories.

“It’s been a really enjoyable and fascinating project.

It has almost been a bit addictive as we have listened to some wonderful local stories and met so many interesting people so far,” she said.

Young people learn from mission trip Most teenagers spent their school holidays relaxing and taking time for themselves, some however, spent theirs helping out in Fijian cities, eating some strange food and teaching the people about the hope of God. Sixteen Year 11 and 12 students from Glasshouse Christian Collage (GCC) in Beerwah, along with several staff members and volunteers from Glasshouse Country Baptist Church, have recently returned from a two week mission trip on the beautiful island of Fiji.

The group was based in the city of Lautoka and also travelled north to a smaller town called Ba. The students and leaders ran kid’s clubs, youth groups and also helped out at the local churches and homegroups.

They also had clothes drives and raised money to support some of the families living in the area.

In their free time the students and leaders would go into the town and put on free music performances for the people going past.

The group’s main mission was to go into the local high schools and talk to the students there.

They’d originally planned to perform a skit called ‘God in a Box,’ however, the day before they were going to go to their first school, they were informed that there had been a large number of suicides in the area over the last month and were asked to speak to the students about depression and suicide instead.

GCC Youth Pastor Mick Spann said it was encouraging to see the students just rely on God. “They had no idea what was going to happen that day or what they would be asked to do, they simply were making themselves available, saying, ‘well God here we are; use us’.”

“My entire life I’ve read books on mission trips and I’ve always wanted to go on a mission trip so that, I guess, is why I wanted to go,” he said.

Cynan Lindsay, 16, was another of the students who went on the trip.

“The best part was going to the kid’s clubs, seeing the happiness on the kid's faces as we played games and sung songs,” she said.

Police Beat with Constable Susan Lowndes

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated all of the finalists and winners for their outstanding achievements in the third annual Caloundra Electorate Community Awards held last Friday.

More than 150 people attended the awards hosted by Mr McArdle with popular Sunshine Coast media personality Caroline Hutchinson as M.C at the CCSA Hall in Caloundra.

Mr McArdle said he was astounded by the number of nominations and calibre of finalists from across the electorate.

The category of Volunteering Group of the Year was hard to split this year, with two groups jointly receiving the award. Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Committee were selected for their dedication to managing and maintaining an ageing building of historical significance, while the Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary, was awarded for their enormous fundraising capabilities.

The Hall Committee members do a wonderful job of managing and maintaining an ageing building on a very limited budget with a committee who are not only few in number but most of whom are in their later years.

The Hall plays an active part in the community, e.g. weekly markets, classes, and an annual morning tea for cancer, as well as providing a venue for private functions. The grounds are always tidy and well-maintained.

Another of the nominees’ was Daryl Jennings, of Mitre 10 Mooloolah, who was nominated in the Community Volunteer of the year category.

The reason Daryl was nominated was because he is a long-standing member of the community. He has a successful business in town and is the ‘go to man’ when you have a complaint or something you need to put right and don’t know what to do.

He’s always willing to listen and is the first to offer help, donate or sell tickets, or promote an event that may be happening. You don’t need to ask; he is always there and willing to put up his land.

ATO Scam

Over the past couple of weeks Beerwah Police have received a number of calls from concerned locals who have been targeted by persons purporting to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). These ‘scammers’ state that there is an outstanding debt which has resulted in an arrest warrant being issued for the person they are calling. The aim is likely to be either convincing the target to give them money or to obtain enough personal details to commit identity theft.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the ATO in relation to an arrest warrant, hang up. For more information on this and other scams check the Scamwatch website.

Rail OP results

Beerwah Police recently conducted a Rail Operation in collaboration with the Railway Squad, Caboolture and Burpengary Police and Queensland Rail staff.

The results of the operation are a great example of proactive policing with 25 people charged with a total of 28 offences, some offences were detected at the time and others involved the location of suspects wanted for questioning in relation to past offences.

A total of 65 Infringement Notices were issued including 12 Traffic Infringements. There were 58 warnings given and a missing person located.

Information was also gained from the operation in relation to who is travelling on the rail network through the division and identifying potential offenders. This is part of an ongoing strategy to detect and prevent criminal and anti-social offences from occurring in relation to the railway corridor in the Beerwah and Landsborough division.

By Sonia Clark Landsborough Post Office has just been awarded a ‘Quarterly Achievement Award’ for their service to the community in the first round of Australia Post Retail Achievement Awards for 2015/2016.

The Australia Post award highlights a shift from corporate sponsorship to a more community based focus, and as a winning post office, they receive a $250.00 retail rewards letter.

Previously this year they also received an ‘Overall Retail Award’ coming third in the entire Central Queensland network.

Winning this current award is a lovely achievement for Landsborough Post Office and their ongoing support of their local community.

The post office has actively supported community ventures. For the last three years they have been a drop off point for ‘Winter Angels’ knitting, a legacy that was developed by a local customer that collects balls of wool to make scarves, gloves and beanies for the needy.

Readers may remember staff member Stacy Bentley, who volunteered as the Maleny Show

Charity Girl for 2015. Supported by the entire post office staff that helped sell raffle tickets, display posters and promote the various charity fundraisers, the community rallied behind her. Over $4000 was raised, with funds going towards the local showgrounds and annual show.

The post office also stocks the hand created work of local artists and donates old store stock to a local charity organisation. Gayle and the staff pride themselves on continually offering all their customers that extra level of customer service and are always happy to support their local community.

Mountain Quilters shine

Contributed by Ann Dunne There were smiles all around at Mountain Quilters in the past couple of weeks after the results of the recent Brisbane Quilt Show at the Convention Centre in Brisbane.

Two of our talented ladies, plus the group itself, were among the prize winners.

Bernadine Hines received a first for her entry and Chris Harvey a second, not only that, but her 12-year-old grandson received a highly commended for his first quilt.

The group received a first in the Group section for their charity quilt entry which will be raffled at the group’s quilt show next May. Tickets are on sale from Beerwah Patchwork and Stuff at Beerwah and Sew This and That at Morayfield.

The proceeds from the sale of tickets will be donated to the Sunshine Linus group based in Nambour who do great work for the community.

Beerwah Lions Visit Bankfoot House

Contributed by Bob Banner As part of their social program the Beerwah Lions Club recently paid a visit to Bankfoot House.

Built in the Glasshouse region during 1868 by the Grigor Family, Bankfoot House became the local post office, store and butcher shop.

More importantly it was a significant stop for Cobb & Co coaches travelling through to Gympie.

Leaving Brisbane at approximately 5.00am, the coach after changing horses every 12 miles, would arrive at Bankfoot house around 12.00noon.

Here the horses would be changed once more and the passengers provided with a sit down lunch. After a 40 minute break, the Coach would continue its journey, arriving at Cobb’s Camp before nightfall, where the passengers were accommodated before completing their journey the following day.

The journey between Brisbane and Gympie cost just over three pounds, a sum that equates to a little over eight hundred dollars in today’s money.

An important and fascinating part of local history, the heritage listed Bankfoot House is one of the very few Cobb and Co coaching stops still intact.

After listening to the informative talk from Ron Gillinder, Chairperson for The Friends of Bankfoot House, I would encourage others to visit for yourself.

Bankfoot House is open on the last Sunday of each month to visitors.

View Club keeping busy

Contributed by Judith Mason Following on from our very successful fashion parade at the beginning of the month where we raised almost $1,000.00 we had a guest speaker at our lunch meeting in October, Ian Ezzy from Life Line.

Life Line’s goal is to have an Australia free of suicides, which at present is seven per day, and is Australia’s leading cause of death. Remember you can always call someone who cares at Lifeline if you have problems, on 13 11 14, available 24 hours seven days a week.

It was a very interesting talk and enlightened those of us who did not know what Life Line was all about! They are always looking for Volunteers for the Help lines and shops. Their shops help fund the counselling unit.

Our next outing is the Melbourne Cup Lunch at Club Glass House and then our November lunch meeting on November 18. December sees our Christmas function on December 2. For friendship, interesting speakers and laughs please come to our lunch meeting, but we need to know for catering. Still loving their cricket at over 70

By Lea Parkes While I have witnessed firsthand the passion that some family and friends have for the sport of cricket (well at least spending hours over the summer watching it) little did I realise just how popular Senior's Cricket is.

Senior's Cricket, for the Over 60s and 70s, has been well established in England but these days it is the fastest growing area of the sport in Australia.

Currently the England over 70s team are touring Australia, as part of the over-70s Ashes series, which will be contested over three ODI Tests (Brisbane, Kenny Bennett and Noel Cox Sydney and Canberra) with another six tour matches to be played.

On October 20 the tourists played the Queensland Country over 70s cricket team at Caloundra Cricket Ground.

The Queensland Country team included a number of Glasshouse Country players, Noel Cox from Beerwah and Kenny Bennett of Glass House, as well as Dave Walton.

England were the winners on the day, batting first they scored 4 for 242 while the Queensland Country were all out for 220.

Noel (or Coxy) who is formerly of Maleny, was also selected in the Australian Over 70's Cricket Test Team as wicket keeper, and played in the opening game of the test series against England at Allan Border Oval in Brisbane on Thursday, October 22.

Noel still plays fourth grade club cricket on the Sunshine Coast and I have heard that he was a tough-tackling second-rower in Redcliffe’s first rugby league premiership in reserve grade in 1964.

Noel’s very proud daughter, Alison Edwards said unfortunately the storms rolled in mid-afternoon and stopped the Australia run chase, handing the win to England.

Re: J&P Aitkens letter in the October 28 edition about no one responding to their request for a builder.

Unfortunately we have had a similar situation looking for vehicle repair work in the Beerwah area.

We personally approached a local repairer, who said quote, "will have a look at what we needed the next day." About five weeks later we got sick of waiting, (no courtesy of a phone call), so approached their business again and received the same very poor business attitude.

A couple of weeks later, he finally came to our residence, looked at what we wanted and assured me that he would get a quote to us.

Now approximately six to eight weeks later, no quote, no phone call, no response at all.

Phone calls must be expensive in Beerwah.

Unfortunately this is not the first very poor customer service we’ve experienced from businesses in Beerwah. It happens far too often. Unless it is urgent, both ourselves and two of our neighbours do our business anywhere but Beerwah. Woodford has the opposite attitude and is full of very positive business owners and that is where we do all of our business.

Note the repair work has now been completed by a repairer outside of Beerwah. Excellent job, and all up took four weeks only from looking to finishing the job ($3,500).

A very professional attitude and we have recommended them to all of our friends.

Beerwah Street Party such a success Without going too over the top, the ‘Celebrate Beerwah’ street party was for me pretty much as good as it gets. It was well-organised, unpretentious and a really great grass roots family event.

Many thousands of locals and visitors strolled through the streetscape, stalls and entertainment, enjoying all that Beerwah as a modern country town has to offer.

Thanks must go to the local businesses, schools and service organisations that supported the event, and especially to the extremely dedicated local ‘Celebrate Beerwah’ team of Judy, Marie, Deb, Roger, Anna, and Becky (to name a few).

In the space of just two years this event has successfully moved from being council organised and funded (in its first year), to a community organised and largely funded event with good council support.

This means it can keep happening year in, year out as long as the community wants it to. It has my full support and admiration for a seriously good social event and attraction to our fantastic Glass House Country townships. Well done to all involved!

Saturday, December 19 Glasshouse Country Community Carols will be held at the Beerwah Sportsground, starting at 5.00pm with pre-show entertainment. Food and drinks available all night. Nativity Scene, baby animal zoo, face painting, jumping castle and local dance groups performing.

Main stage show starts at 6.30pm with a massive line-up of great local artists singing our favourite Carols to sing along to. The night will be topped off with our fireworks finale at 8.00pm.

Christmas is only eight weeks away and by now the dedicated locals have unpacked their decorations ready to create another dazzling show of lights, tree, figures and stories, all to make us (young and old) feel the joy of Christmas ... and for this I thank you. On the way to these festive creations wouldn’t it be nice to drive past business houses also lit up like a ‘Christmas Tree’ with windows of twinkling lights, Santas, reindeer, even nativity scenes?

An implementation update for the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan shows that two years in, 88% of the 41 actions are either in progress or completed, demonstrating the power of a partnership between Sunshine Coast Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council and 30 other local organisations.

The achievements to date have been outlined in a progress report, available now on the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Regional Council websites.

Sunshine Coast Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said getting 30 plus organisations to work together is a significant achievement in itself, toward the commitment the groups have to the passage and its catchment, and the high value they place on the role of the passage in our region.”

“From farming and forestry to urban development, there are many competing land uses in the Pumicestone catchment that influence the quality of the Ramsar listed wetlands and state designated Marine Park and Fish Habitat Area.

“This year’s Healthy Waterways report card results for the Pumicestone catchment are encouraging and demonstrate the importance of partnerships to the sustainability of our waterways for future generations,” she said.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Keep our bushland dog-free There are approximately 4.2 million pet dogs in Australia. Exercising dogs is important for their health and wellbeing and councils provide many dog walking areas.

On the Sunshine Coast there are more than 30 off-leash areas, including several beaches, a park at Beerwah, and the Maleny Showgrounds, and many parks where dogs can be walked on a leash.

Despite this, many owners choose to walk their dogs in natural areas.

National parks have been created solely to protect Australia’s native flora and fauna, and are vital to the survival of many species. Visitors to bushland appreciate the peace and serenity, and enjoy seeing wildlife.

However, even a well-behaved dog will scare away native fauna, or change their behaviour, because of their barking, scent, urine or droppings.

Uncontrolled dogs have even more insidious effects: chasing, harassing, trampling or preying on vulnerable wildlife, and disturbing nest sites.

Vulnerable native plants can also be affected, as dogs love to roll and dig.

Diseases such as parvo-virus, leptospirosis, and parasites such as ticks or tapeworms, may be passed from dogs to native species. The reverse is also true – dogs visiting bush areas risk picking up ticks, which can be deadly. Baits have recently been laid in local forests to eradicate wild dogs, so unleashed pet dogs are at risk of being poisoned.

So next time you visit natural areas, leave your canine friends at home, or risk receiving a fine. Your dog will enjoy the dog park just as much.

Home fit for a king!

Cluckingham Palace comes to Peachester School.

School Captain, Jacob Barbeler pledged to establish a hen house at the school last year and happily he has now achieved this dream.

Materials, live and static were all donated by local families and in particular huge thanks to families Good and Twidale.

The chickens are fat and flourishing thanks to the school kitchen scraps and wet recycling lunch program. All proceeds are going to the school canteen with the revamped healthy eating menu.

School News Students perform at Beerwah Festival

The students of the Mooloolah State School choir and Spanish Dancing Team performed for the Beerwah community at the recent Street Festival.

The young choir students, led by Mrs Frishkorne sang to the people on the main stage in the centre of the festival. They sang beautifully and were applauded for their efforts. They represented the school with such pride.

The talent didn’t stop there, with the Spanish Dancing Team led by Mr Miller, coming out to perform after the choir and danced some of their intricate dances for the crowds to marvel at.

They twirled, turned and danced for the crowd that thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle.

Both groups were supported by friends, family and staff members from the school and as a school community we were very proud of the two talented groups that are always happy to express their passion for their commitment to the art of singing and dancing.

Well done to all the students that performed!

Legends of speed

Brad Hampson Recently Glasshouse Christian College held its annual CO2 Drag Racing Championships. Vapour trails burst from each machine as many close battles were fought with only hundredths of a second separating some competitors.

Year 10 Technology Studies engineering students designed and constructed their own CO2 powered balsa wood dragsters, based on their studies in the aerodynamics of high speed car design in Formula 1 and drag racing cars. Students investigated the principles of friction reduction and the properties of various plastic and metal materials to design and construct an efficient axle system. The quality of racing was exceptional.

The 15 competitors faced a double elimination challenge to decide the overall winner with the fastest CO2 powered dragster. Speed records were again broken this year with races averaging 1.2 seconds over the 20 metre track. Spectators were entertained by exciting close photo finish racing with a few mid-track high speed collisions.

Throughout the competition Jackson Tregea's ‘Monster Energy’ dominated with consistent times averaging 1.1 seconds. However, Jesse Wood's ‘MacH VI’ had improved his consistency over the duration of racing to match similar times in the semi-finals, even clocking a time of 0.985 seconds. The two of them met in the grand final.

In the best of three final, ‘MacH VI’ clenched the first race by only 0.2 of a second; however, ‘Monster Energy’ won the second race with a time of 1:009 seconds. The final deciding race

Jesse Woods, Jackson Tregea and Toby Glover took out first, second and third places respectively was won by ‘MacH VI’ by only 24 hundredths of a second. Commentators and fellow competitors were ecstatic over the close finish.

Congratulations to all competitors, pit-crews and officials - a great adrenalin rushing competition.

Podium finishers Jesse Woods (first place), Jackson Tregea (second place) and Toby Glover (third place) were awarded trophies designed using GCC’s CAD software and laser cutting technology. These ‘Legends of Speed’ go into the Hall of Fame and we are all looking forward to the 2016 titles.

Art Fair a huge success

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State school students, staff and parents put on an Art exhibition and a Fair day that was a wonderful success and lots of fun.

It was a spectacular weekend of art, music, entertainment and fun.

The children and their families had a wonderful time showcasing their art and talents to the sunshine coast community.

The Art Gallery was officially opened on the Friday night by Jenny McKay and visited and supported by Mark Mc Ardle. It was busy with wonderful food, drinks, live entertainment and fabulous art.

On Sunday we hosted the Fair and the entertainment kicked off with the school choir, the band and Spanish Dancing Team, as well as other performers from the coast, that sang, entertained and demonstrated to the guests. The students set the scene for an awesome day!

Some students ran stalls and served people that came from around the coast for an exciting and entertaining day.

The students had a ball trying to outdo each other in games of tug-a-war, races down the giant slide and winning in side show alley.

The student’s art work was also a big hit among the locals, as lots of the children’s art was sold over the two days. There was also established artist’s works sold.

All of these helped the school to raise funds as well as rides, games, food stalls, raffles, etc.

The events were hugely successful because of the tireless help from staff, students, parents and community members. But without cash donations from local businesses this would not have happened on this scale. And also the generous support from businesses across the coast to provide vouchers, tickets and prizes made for successful raffles.

Mooloolah State School would like to thank the local community and beyond for their help, generosity and for coming along to our fabulous event. Monies raised from the event will go toward new computers for the school.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents were treated to a beautiful afternoon tea in our Library while watching a slide show of activities and events that students have participated in during this year.

Students invited their grandparents to visit their classrooms and take a look at what they have been doing in class.

They then headed out to our beautiful Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden area to participate in some fun activities; including planting out some seedlings into our veggie garden.

I had the pleasure of attending this year’s Celebrate Beerwah fiesta and what a celebration it was. Simpson Street truly transformed into a colourful display of market stalls and the atmosphere in the air was electric. Together we can be proud of how much Beerwah has transformed in recent years, especially being one of the hinterland gateways to the Sunshine Coast.

Maleny recreation plan open for comment

Do you want to help shape the future of sport in Maleny? The draft Master Plan 20152030 has been formed following input from key stakeholders and covers the Maleny Showgrounds, Witta Sportsground and sport and recreation uses across the Maleny Community Precinct. Hodgens Road – bridge replacement

Work started last week to replace the Hodgens Road Bridge in Bald Knob that can no longer be maintained to the standard required. The new single lane bridge will be widened and will include steel guardrails. The new bridge will also have a higher deck level to help prevent flooding during major storm events. For those affected your patience during construction is appreciated.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Funding

The receipt of $1 million Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund grant to renew the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve building is fantastic news. Guided by the results of stakeholder consultation, the grant will go towards enabling the establishment of a new $3-4million new discovery centre, cafe, gift shop, elevated viewing platform, meeting theatrette, conservation research area, offices and amenities.

Landsborough Peace Park fence extended

Council has completed the extension of the white picket fence in front of the Landsborough tennis courts. Not only does this help identify the upgraded entry but it also makes it safer for families to use the area of grass and table setting next to the recently upgraded tennis courts. New signage is still to come.

Congratulations to the two Glasshouse Country community groups who have received more than $44,000 in government grants from the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Not-for-profit groups are the backbone of our community and I am pleased to see these welldeserving organisations have been awarded this funding.

Beerwah and District Kindergarten received $12,246.28 to purchase equipment and Beerwah State Primary school P&C received $31,818.18 to install air conditioning.

The fund provides one-off grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations, with revenues sourced from gaming taxes placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines.

I would encourage eligible community groups who had not previously made an application to seriously consider doing so in the future.

It’s a very worthwhile and fair process with the benefits flowing on to the entire community.

4. Improves sleep: Regular aerobic exercise provides three important sleep benefits: it helps you fall asleep faster, spend more time in deep sleep, and awaken less during the night. In fact, exercise is the only known way for healthy adults to boost the amount of deep sleep they get — and deep sleep is essential for your body to renew and repair itself.

5. Protects mobility and vitality: Regular exercise can slow the natural decline in physical performance that occurs as you age. By staying active, older adults can actually keep their cardiovascular fitness, metabolism, and muscle function in line with those of much younger people.

And many studies have shown that people who were more active at midlife were able to preserve their mobility — and therefore, their independence — as they aged.

Living Community Spirit Lives On

‘Above the Blue’ album launch

By Sonia Clark In the belief that music can make a difference, a group of predominately local musicians have banded together to produce an album entitled ‘Above the Blue’.

Fourteen artists have each donated a track to the project that raises awareness for the conditions of depression and anxiety. Many of the tracks provide an insight into the artists own personal journeys, and the music seeks to empower and inspire listeners through the powerful connection of music. Created with the generous support of the local Maleny Apex Club, all proceeds go directly to Beyond Blue.

The album will be launched at the Maleny Show Pavilion on November 14 at a special fundraising event. The event will feature performances from the album songwriters, including ARIA finalist Lou Bradley, Michael Briers, Jen Mize, Paddy McHugh and Brendan Nawrocki. The talent of Maleny artists will be well represented on the night with Andrew Laidlaw Jones, Kelly Cork, Carolyna Lovely, Richo Richardson, Nellie Donovan and Tom Richter.

Tickets are $60.00, which includes a sumptuous two course meal and performances throughout the night. Hear great music live!

Some years ago, while I was teaching in the Music Department at the University in Townsville, a very talented local school musician caught my attention. He sung, played violin, mandolin and drums and was active in orchestras, folk bands and a punk outfit. I remember his bands did a lot of originals and they had albums out. Here was a young musician going places!

The university pursued local talent but Michael elected to take his music studies on to Canberra and I later heard he had moved to Brisbane and was active in the music scene there. And this was where I once more came across him some years later, after I had myself moved to South East Queensland.

Mick Patrick is now the lead singer, mandolinist and one of the fiddlers with The Company. Boasting two Australian Bluegrass champions on fiddle, guitar and banjo, this four piece band has something of a name as a ‘super group’ in folk and bluegrass circles.

Critics rave about them: “a masterclass in bluegrass”, “at the pinnacle of the Australian country music scene”, “the band is raising the bar for acoustic musicians in Australia.”

Consisting of guitarist Jamie Clark, fiddle and banjo player George Jackson, upright bassist Markus Karlsen and Mick, The Company are all outstanding soloists who bring a range of musical backgrounds and interests to the band.

Their individual influences on The Company sound is subtle, but is certainly heard in their solos and the songs they play. I say songs, as although known for their instrumental prowess, they are also fine singers and rich harmonies are a feature of The Company sound. Their recently released second album, Trouble, features a fascinating collection of songs which display their extensive folk roots. Jamie Clark says that the band’s music derives from the American bluegrass tradition, but the sound and storytelling is from Queensland.

Yes, we have been able to grab them on their way through our region for a show at the Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre in Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains.

Contributed by Helen Page When Peachester branch of the QCWA celebrated their 70th birthday recently, the Peachester Hall was packed with visitors and well-wishers joining the current members to mark this special occasion. Among the visitors it was interesting to see so many descendants of early members; and I believe that if we had taken a survey, most visitors present would have claimed CWA members in their families. Many of these people follow the example set by their mothers and grandmothers in working for the community, so the spirit of the CWA lives on in another generation.

The record of service to the community by the QCWA generally, and by our local branch in particular, is an inspiration to all. Peachester History Committee congratulates current members on keeping up the good work started and carried on by previous generations, and we are delighted that many ladies are members of both organisations.

Current branch President Coral Beutel read from the minutes of the first meeting, and highlighted some early events and activities, reminding all present how much the CWA story reflects the history of this district.

Following are excerpts from a booklet compiled for the branch’s 50th anniversary, ‘Memories: Peachester CWA 1945-1995’: ‘Fifty years of Peachester CWA involvement is a story of service, of love, giving, fellowship, caring and humility. Picture that inaugural meeting on 16th October 1945 in the Peachester Hall, with some twenty-five ladies gathered. The meeting had been convened by Enid Macdonald who was a very close friend of Ruth Fairfax the founder of CWA in Queensland… The officers for the ensuing year were elected resulting in Gladys Turner, who had been in CWA out west becoming the first President, Mabel Breton Secretary, and May Loveday Treasurer. The President thanked everyone for coming and then proposed a dance be held to raise funds to function as well as to start building a tennis court for a social outlet for the ladies…. Without delay Mabel wrote to the Hall Trustees to book the first Thursday of the month for CWA meetings [and they still meet on the first Thursday].

Imagine the difficulties in a dairy farming community. These women were truly isolated. In the main they were farmers’ wives, few with cars, and living up to five miles from the township. In the first years many members walked to meetings - often across neighbours’ paddocks to shorten the trip, carrying lunch in a cake tin or wrapped up in a tea towel. Many had young children accompanying them, and some even pushed prams. A few, more venturous, rode horses often with a young child up front. One dedicated member on numerous occasions dragged a corn sack of produce across the paddocks for the Bring and Buy stall. As more members joined, those with cars went out of their way on dreadful roads to ensure every woman had the chance to join the CWA fellowship each month. Those men who took time off to drive a group of women to meetings were fondly referred to as CWA husbands. It is this caring attitude that has made Peachester a special branch right from the start…

Enid Macdonald who was Divisional president in 1947 and Branch President from 1948 to 1951 described those early gatherings as,“meetings which radiate good fellowship, where each member contributes in some small way to each other’s happiness.”

It is this philosophy which has kept the CWA alive through changing times; and country districts like ours are fortunate that generations of ladies have continued to set this example of community service and care for others.

The Lookout Cafe With Christmas coming up soon, this is the time of year we start to get our end of year seasonal visitors and think about where we will be holding our Christmas parties and celebrations. The Lookout Cafe is the perfect place to showcase the breathtaking natural beauty of our local area while enjoying a meal.

With one of the most stunning visual backdrops of our Glasshouse Mountains cafes, the tranquil visual environment is a lovely accompaniment to a menu that includes breakfast options, light meals, more hearty dishes and afternoon tea.

With the festive season coming up, the cafe can also easily cater to group bookings.

Lea and I decided to take a lunch break from the office and we both went for a lighter lunch option

this time. I ordered the sweet caramelised onion tart layered with chunks of creamy camembert served with salad and turkish bread for $16.00.

Lea decided to have the cheese platter which had a nice selection of cheeses (a hard, soft and tri-colour option), homemade fruit paste and crackers for $12.00. My lunch was really tasty and definitely hit the spot; Lea enjoyed her platter which also came with a really cute set of cheese tools.

The cafe was nice and busy and the layout lends itself well to catch the surrounding breeze - giving it a lovely airy feel. While we were there, a larger group came in to dine and were seated easily as there is plenty of room for both small and larger groups.

Along with all day breakfast options and a menu that has both substantial lunch or lighter options, there is a daily specials board. When we were there options on the board included chicken, spinach and pumpkin tart with salad, vegetable lasagne with salad and chicken mango and avocado salad with toasted almonds and chilli lime dressing (all $16.00).

The artwork on the wall, and local preserves and soaps for sale are a nice touch especially for visitors, and while there is fully comprehensive menu, the cafe has a relaxed and charming feel. The Lookout Cafe is well worth the visit and provides one of the most picturesque dining experiences in our area.

Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair

Swan School of Dance at Landsborough are proud to present ‘Movie Magic’ at the Nambour Civic Centre on Friday, December 4. Tickets are on sale now for this end of year performance spectacular. Held at the Nambour Civic Centre venue, the concert is an amazing opportunity for the students to showcase what they have learned throughout the past year.

Jobs for the yard in November Bindi-eye is rampant at the moment – spending time hand weeding now will save a lot of pain this summer. Or you can use one of the selective herbicides – just ask for advice at one of the local produce or hardware stores.

Just an update note about the Peachester Garden Club meeting on November 19 … it’s actually the final meeting for the year and is being held at Trish and Gary Bradford’s house. Bring your own meat and chair.

• Once your spring flowering bulbs – such as jonquils and daffodils – have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry dark place.

• Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed along the flower stalks. Just plant them into a pot of quality potting mix and wait for them to grow.

• Rains and warm temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers

in the garden. Pick them off and squash them, or use a pyrethrum or bacteria based spray.

• Time to prune your azaleas and dead head roses to encourage continual flowering.

• Zucchinis may be showing powdery mildew (a fungal disease) on their leaves. Spray with Mancozeb or try the one part milk to 10 parts water technique.

• Keep an eye out for bronze orange bugs on your citrus. Knock them off and squash them or spray with Confidor.

• Fruit flies will start to appear. Keep them at bay by cleaning up old rotten fruits and using a splash bait, such as Eco-Naturalure.

• Prune back your grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness.

• It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits.

• Keep spraying your developing mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose.

Leptospermum semibaccatum A hardy shrub to two metres which will grow in a range of soil types. Its pale to deeper pink flowers appear mainly in Spring making it useful as an ornamental. A white variety is also available. The leaves are slightly aromatic when crushed and it will grow in either full sun or partial shade.

It is of high wildlife value being a host plant for the Common Jezabel Butterfly and habitat for the Ground Parrot. When in flower the nectar loving birds flock to it as do native bees and other insects.

It responds well to pruning and can be propagated easily by seeds or cuttings.

The versatility of this plant makes it an easy, attractive addition to any garden.

Ps Aaron Jackson - Church on the Rise HEBREWS 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11 is renowned as the great faith chapter. It speaks of faith in the realm that we can understand. The reason we can understand it, is because it is written in the context of everyday people living their everyday lives.

Fathers, sons, wives daughters, those adopted, those living in sin, barren, slave, falsely accused, all received a reward according to their faith. We can relate to that.

Faith seems to be just about everywhere we look these days. People place their faith in many things, and yet it’s our faith that should lead us through life. Placing your faith in God gives life, purpose and meaning. The great love chapter in 1 Corinthians13 speaks of faith. Faith must have an outlet. It must have a function and that function needs a result. Faith in God gives us function and the result is love. When we place our faith in Christ we begin to understand how He loves us, and in turn we share that love with

So when you come to God it pleases Him because it demonstrates you believe HE IS and because of your faith (even if it is the size of a mustard seed) you shall reap the rewards of a life nestled in Faith Hope and Love.

Sunday, November 1 - Club Glass House held its AGM. Denis Steer elected President. With a strong Committee he has steered the Club through tough times and with a small number of member volunteers, have given the club an appealing appearance and improved the amenity for all members. Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club Contributed by Jill Forster The 2015/16 cricket season commenced, Saturday, October 3 and this season Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club has fielded 2 teams in the Sunshine Coast Junior Competition – Under 10 and 12 and 4 teams in the Senior Competition – Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The Under 10 games are played under lights on Friday nights at various venues around the Sunshine Coast, with Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club being host venue, holding three games at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Ground on Friday night,November 6 from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.

Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club is also running the Milo in2CRICKET program again this season.

It’s a fun way of introducing cricket to both boys and girls aged five -10 years.

This season there are 16 Milo in2CRICKET participants in the program. The Milo in2CRICKET program is vital to the future of our junior cricket with nine members of our Under 12 team this season having previously participated in the program.

The committee is very excited to welcome back Maleny Apex Club as the major senior sponsor for this season which will see them sponsor the

club’s Division 1, 2, 3 and 4 teams.

The committee is also extremely pleased to announce that our major junior sponsor, Hy-Tec Concrete,has renewed their sponsorship forthe club’s junior teams for another season with this being their 8th season.

The committee would also like to take this opportunity to welcome back our other valuable sponsors – Braetop Berries, Scooters & Mobility, Jeff Brown Electrical, Woodlands, Beerwah Hotel, justemp Hire–Temporary Pool Fencing Specialist and Subway, Beerwah. By George you've done it now George was lying in bed and remembered he didn’t turn off the shed light, he opened the door to go and turn off the light, but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things.

He immediately phoned the police, who asked, "is someone in your house?" and George said, "no, the shed." Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available.

George said, "okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them all." Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars redhanded.

One of the policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
