notification was received alerting authorities to fire activity near Roys Road and Dianella Road Beerwah.

Dry and windy conditions saw the fire rapidly escalate with over 50 crews from the Rural Fire Brigade, Queensland Fire and Rescue

Mitch Gaynor IT is frankly astonishing to learn that as the dry season commenced, so did attempts by some idiots to try and light the place up. As we reveal today, there has been a marked increase in the number of arson attacks on hinterland forestry that now amount to one a day (p4-5).

Over the past month three large and threatening fires have broken out with two of those being investigated over their ‘suspicious’ origins. In fact there are four ongoing investigations into blazes that are absorbing the resources of police and other emergency service operators that should be better spent elsewhere.

Someone must be in a pretty poor frame of mind to make the decision to go out and start a fire such as we’ve seen. Last weekend it was Landsborough’s turn to feel the ferocity of one of these blazes. It came after a tragic week across Queensland - the images

of fires tearing around Tara and claiming the life of two people show how quickly things can take a devastating turn.

With those images fresh in our minds, the Landsborough blaze, the emergency declaration and live updates made for a very uneasy Saturday night.

Sunday was little better with further evacuations as fires continued to flare, but thankfully no lives or property were lost thanks to the enormous efforts of emergency services and volunteers.

On the theme of long hot summers we also report this week into the deep water that the Maleny and Mooloolah Valley pools are floundering in.

Both look like they won’t open this summer due to the complicating factor of being owned by the State Goverment and on school grounds, face increasing regulatory demands

and the management must be organised by voluntary P&C committees. The easiest solution would be for the council to work with the state to manage these assets, but there doesn’t appear to be any love for this - as commonsense as it may seem to the average rate/taxpayer.

The last word is that the council has no budget for it, but we are pretty confident if there was a will to guarantee the service to these towns, it could be achieved.

You would think the paper is filled with bad news! Not so.

Hopes of pool opening drains Mooloolah pool unlikely to open as regulatory, insurance issues play havoc

By Sonia Isaacs INSURANCE woes and ongoing operational challenges will mean Mooloolah Pool is unlikely to open to the public for the second year in a row. Changes to insurance regulations has meant the Mooloolah State School P&C who have traditionally managed the Education Queensland owned facility outside of school hours has been forced to hand operations back to the school.

Over the years public access to the Mooloolah Pool has been

managed through various volunteer organisations and supported by a community based aquatic facility grant offered by Sunshine Coast Council.

A spokesperson from Mooloolah State School P&C acknowledged this outcome was extremely disappointing for the community; however the association was not prepared to open the pool to the public without adequate insurance.

They said not having the pool open over the coming summer

months was the least preferred outcome. They also said they understood Council was looking into a ‘work around’ option; however they were unable to provide any confirmation of what that might entail or the time frame involved.

“Because of the insurance issues we obviously can’t manage the pool anymore or engage a third party provider to run it, so the only option is for the school to look at doing something. The school will have

to try and work something out with Council and see what they can make happen,” they said.

“While we sincerely hope the pool will be able to open in the foreseeable future, at this stage we are unable to make that call of when that will be.”

A spokesperson from P&Cs Queensland said they were unable to confirm the specifics of the insurance changes.

“P&Cs Qld understands the frustration of the school and P&C to solve this issue. However, is it

imperative that all policies and procedures are strictly followed to ensure the safety of students and others who seek to use the school swimming pool,” they said. sonia@gcnews.com.au

Forests under siege by daily arson attacks Plantations are forced to close

A QFES spokesperson said the fire (on Monday Oct 30) was now within containment lines and a total fire ban had been issued for the Sunshine Coast Region until November 6.

the fire was initially detected by a HQ Plantations lookout in the Landsborough Logging Area from its Beerburrum tower at 12.20pm.

HQP firefighters in light attack vehicles were onsite by 12.45pm and were joined shortly afterwards by QFES. HQP initially deployed 30 specialist forest firefighters on site yesterday and overnight, while 42 were on site Sunday from Beerburrum district and neighbouring HQP districts Blackbutt, Imbil, Toolara and Tuan.

A HQP spokesperson said a full investigation will be initiated once

conditions are safe.

The extent of damage to plantations is yet to be finalised but is likely to be significant, further compromising future supplies of timber for the SE Queensland building industry, a HQP spokesperson said.

“We would like the public’s help to stop these arson attacks and are appealing to the public to report any suspicious activity or information about these fires or the arsonist to PoliceLink 131 444 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers QLD 1800 333 000,” they said.

Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade said it was a

“valiant effort” by those involved.

“A super human effort from local Rural Fire Volunteer crews, QFRS and HQ Plantations were able to pull it up before it crossed Steve Irwin Way into Landsborough properties,” they said.

“No houses or lives lost - an amazing team effort defending our communities.”

Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, said: “I want to thank all the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, volunteers, and support staff who have been working tirelessly to protect and assist our communities.

HINTERLAND forests are being targeted in daily arson attacks with four blazes being treated by police as suspicious including last weekend’s devastating Landsborough fires that forced evacuations and at one point threatened Australia Zoo. The spate of almost daily arson attacks has forced HQPlantations (HQP) to announce the immediate closure of Beerburrum and the Glasshouse Mountains forests. With over 40 significant fires including at least 30 arson attacks since the commencement of fire season, HQP has closed all its plantation forests in Queensland to the general public until further notice.

HQP Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Stephanie Hunt, said current conditions, taking into account long term soil and vegetation dryness, strong winds, high temperatures and low humidity was making it extremely difficult to extinguish fires, even when attended to quickly.

She acknowledged that in the past Beerburrum forest has been identified as a national ‘arson hotpot’ and while the research

might be old, the findings were still relevant with HQP currently dealing with an almost daily occurrence of arson attacks.

“Due to a spate of arson attacks, we are declaring a plantation-wide closure until the arsonists are caught. HQP is also in the process of forming an arson task force with key agencies,” she said.

A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesperson confirmed while the September 18 Beerwah Fire had no evidence to indicate it was deliberately lit and the matter was now finalised, the cause of the October 21 Beerwah fire that burnt through 380 hectares, is still being treated as suspicious. They also confirmed that there had been a total of three vegetation fires over the last three months that remain under investigation.

“The October 21 Beerwah fire is being treated as suspicious and investigations are continuing; no arrests or charges have yet been made. Three vegetation fires over the last three months remain under investigation. The cause of each of those fires is yet to be determined,” they said. sonia@gcnews.com.au

This year’s family-friendly festival will feature over 200 artists performing in a packed program of musically inspired goodness.

With acts from Melbourne, Sydney, Northern NSW as well as Brisbane and across the Sunshine Coast; a wide genre of music is catered for, from contemporary folk and funk to alt country, hot bluegrass, ska and blues and even a bit of trance to ‘doof’ it up.

Peaceful Glass House protesters unfurl giant banner at company’s German HQ

By Sonia Isaacs PROTESTERS have taken their opposition to the Glass House Quarry expansion global, with local residents unfurling a giant banner on the German owner’s home soil.

Staging a ‘peaceful protest’, two Glass House Mountains residents, Karin and Remco Stronkhourst, travelled to Heidelberg, Germany earlier this month in a bid to bring awareness of the local campaign to the international stage.

who own Hanson Glasshouse Quarry, to unfurl the banner as well as attending well-known tourist spots around the town.

Designed by local traditional custodian BJ Djinidjini Murphy, the massive 3 metre banner called for the Glasshouse Mountains to be saved and highlighted the local campaign’s catchcry ‘Mountain town not mining town’.

In late July, Hanson lodged a development application (DA) with Sunshine Coast Council proposing to double rock extraction to 1.2 million tonnes a year at their Glass House Mountains

site. This has prompted a strong community reaction and led to the formation of a grassroots community activist group ‘Save Our Glass House Mountains’. In their inaugural newsletter, the group have stated their mission to ‘halt the quarry expansion, protect our community, and safeguard the Glass House Mountains as a natural treasure’.

The group have kicked off a series of roundtable discussions to galvanise a multi-faceted community campaign strategy and are now currently working on a series of local fundraising activities. A key area of focus is preparation towards the community submission process with organisers developing a template to help simplify the process.

Currently the timing of when the public consultation period will open is uncertain, however organisers understand it could be anytime from now until the end of the year, with a

Members of not for profit community group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network) have also expressed their concern about the proposed DA, and will oppose the application. Secretary, John Quinn, said GMAN had its foundation some 30 years previously when an application to commence quarrying at the current site was initially opposed by the community.

“While the community lost that initial quarry fight, from there many community members

decided to band together and officially form a conservation group. Hence the beginning of GMAN. We will submit our own submission in response to the Hanson Quarry Development Application and certainly encourage community members to do the same,” he said.

Festival of Small Halls lights up Mooloolah

SOARING vocals and heartfelt lyrics set the scene for an evening of world class talent as Mooloolah welcomed the Festival of Small Halls tour with open arms. Featuring three incredibly talented young troubadours; emerging Blackall Range singer Anjali Leonard, Brisbane’s Monique Clare and international headliner Shane Pendergast, the evening proved contemporary folk music has a dazzlingly bright future.

Mooloolah Hall was packed with over 100 people and beautifully lit up to the rafters. Young Mapleton based singer Anjali Leonard showcased her talent by enthralling the audience with her hauntingly beautiful and

soaring vocals providing an earnest and evocative start to the evening, Monique Clare, an accomplished cellist and contemporary folk vocalist proved both mesmerising and engaging as she shared her heartfelt and deeply personal lyrics that connected well with the appreciative audience.

It should be noted that while the musicianship was obviously apparent, the acoustics at the heritagelisted community hall provided an excellent backdrop that took the evenings performances to the next level. Canadian headliner Shane Pendergast hails from a long line of maritime story tellers and musicians. It seemed not

only does he sing from the heart but his talent taps into generational memory that is firmly in his blood as he gently enticed the audience to enter his melodic world.

A softly spoken troubadour from Prince Edward Island, he engaged the audience with seemingly simple songs that resonated with layers of depth. His versatility as a musician was evident spanning blues through to folk, finishing up with a rousing Irish ballad that had the audience clapping and singing along. By Kirra Livingstone THE Maleny Community Gym (MCG) is now looking to expand its gym facilities to keep up with a growing membership base as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

MCG president, April Adsett, said the committee missed out on marking the milestone when the actual anniversary occurred in January, but recently celebrated the landmark occasion on October 25.

“We just had a casual afternoon at the Maleny Hotel. We enjoyed some platters of sandwiches and invited the members along.

It was just had a nice social little catch up,” she said.

The gym’s growth continues to stay strong, with 220 members aged from 12 to 90. The gym has a member who just turned 90, as well as a member who has trained at

the gym since its opening.

As there is no more room to grow in the building, the gym is working with Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) to build

more infrastructure to better accommodate its members. “We are gradually outgrowing our premises over the years.

While we are now in the Showgrounds - we can’t expand anymore, so we’re aiming to look at building on the recreation precinct to expand the gym’s infrastructure,” she said.

MCG plans to fund the expansion through

various government grants, and are hoping to expand as soon as possible, with April joking she wanted it done two years ago.

“Our aim is to expand the gym as soon as possible,” she said.

“We have nearly finished our business plan, and then we’ll be talking with MDSRC. We are working on getting our lease for extra land, then we can apply for state and federal grants.” kirra@gcnews.com

Glasshouse Men’s Shed opens its doors The Beerwah community is where the heart is this November GLASSHOUSE Country Men’s shed will be hosting a special open day event on Saturday November 11 to showcase what they do, and share their products with the community. Local businesses and residents are invited to drop in anytime from 9am-2pm to check out all the different activities, tools and machinery on offer; see what the men actually do and gain a better understanding of the incredible items that can be produced at the shed.

The event will feature guest speakers, a sausage sizzle stall with cold drinks, a variety of shed made products on offer for sale also, such as timber slabs, wooden and leather items and a special ceremony for Remembrance Day at 11am.

By Kirra Livingstone IT HAS been a torrid few weekends for Glasshouse Country residents with major fires causing genuine fears but the Beerwah Heart Community Day this weekend could be just the tonic for those struggling with the impact.

The annual event at the Beerwah Heart Precinct (including the community hall and library), is a free family friendly event that features live music, market stalls, free workshops, face painting, yoga and much more.

It is supported by Sunshine Coast Council and is run each year thanks to being a recipient of the 2023 Queensland Mental Health Week Community Events Grant Program.

Division 1 councillor and deputy mayor, Rick Baberowski, said the event highlights mental health, and the Sunshine Coast community is getting better at checking in with ones mental health and well being to ensure a balanced lifestyle.

“Events like these give us a perfect prompt to take that moment for ourselves and help to connect to each other,” he said.

“It’s also a great chance for our community to see what is on offer and what you can get involved with in Beerwah.

“Try your hand at various free craft activities, including the super

sewing machines. All materials will be supplied, and our ladies will be on hand for guidance and support.”

On top of that, the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade and the Landsborough Scouts will be serving cakes and slices and cups of tea from the Hall kitchen from 11am, and hosting a sausage sizzle from 11am, respectively.

The Dance Academy will also provide a performance from 2pm, along with workshops and activities from Bijam of Yoga, Lives Lived Well, iDriveSim Training, Beerwah High School, Suzy the Face Painter, the Mend-it Cafe, Rhythm Culture, and local creative Sharron Walters.

Approved providers nominated supervisors must ensure that every reasonable precaution is taken to protect children from harm and from any hazards likely to cause injury.

When making decisions about sleep and bedding equipment and to inform our professional judgment we will conduct risk assessments for all sleep environments, consider sleep and rest needs of each child including health needs, consider best practice, ensure there is always adequate supervision and monitoring of children at all times during sleep and rest periods, ensure sleep and rest policies are created and reviewed regularly.

A healthy approach

David Marr offers fascinating insight into the cruel past

By Sonia Isaacs ACCLAIMED journalist and author, David Marr spoke with both candour and conviviality to a sold-out crowd at last week’s Outspoken event at the Maleny Community Centre.

In conversation with Steven Lang, David (both pictured) discussed his latest book ‘Killing for Country’ which delved into the bloody, dark and brutally shameful history of Australia’s colonial frontier wars, and explores the callously cruel role of the Native Police; which when researching his own family history David was appalled to discover a familial connection to. The evening commenced with an introduction to award winning writer Mirandi Riwoe, speaking about her new book, ‘Sunbirds’.

An engaging author who enjoys success through

her historical crime work written under a ‘nom de plume’, Mirandi presented a fascinating and delightful book reading. David Marr proved to be a droll and engaging interviewee who was well versed in intelligent and amusing asides that drew in the audience

despite the often harrowing revelations of the subject matter and discovery that his greatgreat-grandfather was in essence a ‘professional killer’.

While his family history provoked a curiosity and journalistic hook that served as a spine for the story, the book represents years of collaboration and archival research based on public

records, letters and memoirs to present a ‘clear path through an ugly forest’ of under-reported history. David spoke of how that curiosity led him to investigate the history of early Australian politics and question how the native police with their violent suppression of Aboriginal resistance to European settlement was able to be sanctioned for nearly 60 years.

The evening concluded with a robust Q&A with some insightful and thought-provoking questioning from audience members, some of whom shared their own deeply personal and poignant connections.

By Dr Michael Whiticker I HAVE a rather quacky chat for you this month – it’s the “Good Doctor” part of me… and depending on your response, I might return to this subject again in future articles. It was inspired by a musician colleague mentioning just the other day, “Ooh I look so fat in that video!”

My ears pricked up as being healthy has become a little of an obsession with me of late. Some minor health issues a couple of years ago drove me to begin researching and I read widely from who I believe are the best medical thinkers writing on the subject of diet and health, including Drs Jason Fung, Mark Hyman, Joseph Mercola, Nora Gedgaudas, Michael Mosely, Carole Hungerford and Dr Eric Berg’s YouTube channel amongst others that I follow. We have learnt so much new about good health in these last 20 years.

Much written before the 2000s can be taken with a grain of salt – so much of it about marketing of industry products (Food, Pharmaceutical etc), that have since been caught out.

Here are some tips that might work for my overweight colleague and perhaps for you too: 1. Intermittent fasting is good for you. A sensible approach is to

exceptionally well without food in the morning!

2. Only have 3 meals a day.

Eating at roughly 11am, 3 and 7pm works for many. Not snacking between meals might disappoint some but that 4 hour break allows your body to do a lot of its important work. If you eat within 2 hours of finishing a meal you are interfering with your body’s job. Don’t do it! Have a glass of water or tea instead.

3. Drink more water. Most of us err on this one. Try to drink 2 litres a day!

4. Reduce sugar and carbs (also sugar). We used to think that eating a lot of fruit was good for us. Much of it is but a lot of it isn’t and that lot’s the sugar (the fructose) part. Similarly cut the carbs – breakfast cereals, pastries, potato chips, white breads and pasta dishes might be tasty but they are largely bad for you…

5. Fat is an important part of your diet. Google “why good fats are good for you” if you’d like to learn a little more. To get started here is a few healthy high fat foods: Fatty fish (eg salmon), Eggs, Avocado, Flaxseed, Nuts.

6. Eat as much unprocessed, organic and grass fed foods as you can.

Enough already! Have a superb, healthy and musical month.

Transforming Coochin Creek to Coachella Festival site ‘will be tourism driver’

By Kirra Livingstone PLANS for Australia’s largest musical festival site have been unveiled with the developer saying it would generate millions in local tourism on the Sunshine Coast.

The site off Roys Road at Coochin Creek is currently agricultural land.

The venue, known as Coochin Fields is expected to host up to six events per year.

Plans were recently lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council by the Comiskey Group.

The group first proposed the plan in 2022, but was delayed due to Covid and issues with

international travel as well as logistical issues.

Comiskey said it had already attracted national interest from a number of entertainment providers, securing events for the venue, expected to open in two years time.

“Some of the largest Australian and international touring companies and festivals have already shown substantial interest in holding events at Coochin Fields,” it said.

THE first cohort of local Glass House Country Chamber members to complete their Certificate IV in Entrepreneurship and New Business have celebrated their graduation.

How would the Voice cut through those inefficiencies?

The Voice was seen by many as another layer of bureaucracy.

Australia has a large diversity of citizens with different ethnic backgrounds, cultures and religions. We are a tolerant society.

We are all Australians. It is wrong to recognise one culture from another in our most important document, the Constitution. It is contrary to the very nature of egalitarianism that Australians aspire. It is divisive.

No detail was given regarding the make up of the Voice advisory group; the number of people, the method of appointment, their duties, their budget, their salaries,

their authority.

All Commonwealth legislation affects all Australians to a certain degree. Would the Voice comment on each and how will that affect the efficient workings of government? Within the working papers of The Uluru Statement of the Heart includes such notions as a treaty and financial compensation; matters not explained by the government.

Treaties are between countries.

It is sad enough that we have two flags flying representing Australia and that we are obliged to suffer “Welcome to Country” (my country) every time we have public gatherings.

Finally, it was naïve of the government to consider a referendum without bipartisan support. It was ill advised and done in haste. It has damaged the cohesion in our society.

The yes camp had on its side the majority of the press, the majority of funding and we still said no. The reasons flagged during the debate that doomed the referendum were; There were opinions from a former High Court Chief Justice and a Solicitor General, among other legal experts, who

view, is long overdue. Over the years Maleny was relatively well served by Mary Cairncross and Gardeners Falls, and just as these were becoming highly attractive to people from further afield, Maleny obtained the Precinct, with all it’s potential to service the local district in multiple ways.

I am pleased to see how nature has flourished on the Precinct, and how the perimeter path is extensively used for exercising both residents and their dogs.

However, most residents’ expectations have not been met; there is no place that serves the community as a district park.

A future district park would need shady picnic tables, toilets, BBQs and importantly play equipment for a wide variety of ages such as a basketball half court.

A fenced dog off leash area is also sorely needed.

I have imagined such a park on the Precinct, possibly on the area known as Platypus Bend.

I am aware the MDSRC has a lease on this area and I dearly hope that they will see a district park as fulfilling the recreation part of their remit.

However, if this is not to be the case, I see it as Council’s duty to meet the standards they have set themselves under the Recreation Parks Plan 2021 and provide Maleny with a district park.

Enough useless utilities WHY does our Queensland government continue to inflict inefficient, expensive public utilities on us?

Premier Palaszczuk recently advised parliament that we are going to get another desalination plant by 2035, probably on the Sunshine Coast.

In 2013, engineers found that Tugan desalination plant water was costing $4,881 a Megalitre (ML) compared with $256/ML for SEQ dam water.

To ensure water security, surely increasing our dam capacity would make more sense. A new Borumba Dam wall will be built 20 metres higher, increasing the dam’s capacity by 178,000 ML, close to three times the capacity of Baroon Pocket Dam. One new dam would cost a lot less than a desalination plant.

The proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) plant will need all that water to generate electricity so it can’t be used for water supply.

The PHES plant has estimated overall capital costs of over $19 billion dollars. It will probably cost much more as the Snowy 2.0 PHES cost has now escalated to $12bn dollars with another $10bn dollars for transmission lines.

For under $20 billion dollars an APR-1400 conventional nuclear power station could be built in eight years and generate far more constant electricity.

This PHES plant will produce 30 per cent less electricity than it uses to run the pumps. Under a Net Zero policy it will be used mainly at night because only intermittent wind turbine electricity will be available and the PHES turbines may need to provide continuous power for up to 12 hours to keep the lights on.

The solar and wind farm powered reverse cycle turbines would then pump each day for 12 hours to refill the top reservoir.

If the wind doesn’t blow at night this high level of turbine use would become unsustainable.

Sometimes you need fails to know wins I GAVE one of the kids a first warning the other day. There is a zero tolerance rule for the way she speaks to her mother, I said sternly.

To which my better half noted that you can’t have zero tolerance and a first warning. Well whatever, I was super annoyed. Who talks like that?

Even my daughter gave me a quzzical, ‘So just exactly how are you going to kick me out?’.

Details, details. Just know I’m pretty serious. Every time I try to give youth the benefit of the doubt over their entitled obnoxiousness they go off their nut because we won’t drop everything immediately on demand. She also failed her driver’s license test that week which probably sent her over the edge.

Being asked to shut the cutlery door sends her over the edge, so it’s hard to know.

We were secretly (openly) hoping she would fail. She is a menace at home and it is the least I can do as a good citizen to delay her being a menace on the roads.

It was particularly funny when her test paper showed her start time as 10:55am, finish time: 11:00am. She didn’t look for or give way to oncoming traffic while exiting the testing centre.

Immediate fail. Lol. Better luck next time! We love you!

Our rivers show us the way

WHAT is the longest river on earth?

Most people have probably heard that the Amazon River in South America or the Nile River in Africa is the longest. The answer really depends on how you define river. One dictionary defines a river as a body of water flowing towards the ocean. This means the river doesn’t necessarily have to be above ground. The Rio Hamza is a subterranean river in South America. It flows from west to east 4000m below the ground. It is estimated to be about 6000 km long!

Rivers are one of nature’s most amazing features. They are the lifelines of the land.

They deliver precious life-giving water to everything. Animals go to the rivers to drink.

Life is always abundant on the banks of a river.

The Nile for example flows through a desert. But along its banks, life has flourished for thousands of years, watered by its never ceasing gift.

Rivers only run in one direction. It is their nature to give continually. They cannot flow in the other direction. They do not take back what they have given.

This is the manner in which God desires us to share kindness. Jesus gave us the perfect example. From him flowed never ceasing kindness. Even as he was being nailed to the cross, kindness coursed from him as he asked the Father to forgive his executioners.

It will flow from us in one direction. It isn’t something we are to hold back or try to take back. It is to be as a river flowing from us continually to spread life giving joy.

There’s a perfectly named river in Eastern Tennessee in the U.S. bearing the name Goforth Creek. This body of water represents how we are to live. Kindness should go forth from us continually to everyone we meet just as water continually goes forth from that creek.

This is not something you can do on your own however. It isn’t our nature to give kindness continually. We often desire to withhold kindness from those who are unkind to us.

Every river gets its supply of water from other sources. If we want kindness to flow continually from us like a river, we must be connected to a Source of kindness greater than ourselves.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Ephesians 4:32)

Contributed by Ken Barker Priscilla Vickers and Stuart Craig teamed up to play a game of doubles in a game of Ricochet Croquet on Tuesday against Sally Adams and Lynette Evans, winning a tight and enjoyable encounter 11 -10.

Donna Manning and Dianne Horsman were too good for Lynette on Thursday beating her in a two against one game 22 – 10. Sarah Widin and David Kerr went down to Helen Andrews and Wallace Roy to the tune of 5 – 12. David, a relative newcomer to the game, showed good form with some fine rolls, one from corner 1 to approach hoop 4.

Compared to previous weeks the lawns were almost deserted on Sunday.

Everybody is saving themselves for the November tournament which runs from the 2nd to the 5th of November. Ken Barker and Donna played a friendly in which no scores were recorded. The game only lasted an hour and a bit, about the same amount of time that the second division games will be played over – so it was good preparation for that. Sarah, Wallace, and Dianne played a pleasant threesome which Sarah and Wallace won 9 - 6. Vince Carbery visited to finalize the draw for the November

tournament.

The Doggies Pride for club owner after winning national community gong secure coach for 2024 BRETT Hill will remain at the Beerwah Bulldogs for another year as the A Grade Men’s team coach following their record-breaking 2023 campaign.

Fresh from the club’s first ever Sunshine Coast Rugby League Grand Final win, the Doggies announced Hill would continue in the role.

The A Grade Men’s squad this year went through the season undefeated. Hill has lead the team for the past three seasons, with the squad going agonisingly close to a Grand Final win in 2022.

Brett’s sons Blake and Jamie Hill, also played for the Beerwah Bulldogs A Grade Men this year, making the team feel even more like a family , with brothers Mathew and Daniel Kidd established A Grade players in the squad. The club’s committee heading into the 2024 season remains the same, with President Stephen Hammill continuing in the role.

Oldies show they’ve still got the moves ON October 14 and 15, a number of ex and current BeeGees players competed in the Sunshine Coast Masters Tournament, where two out of three teams made it into the grand final, with one securing the title.

The Coastal MixUps, made up of 10 current and former BeeGees players, had a convincing grand final win 7-0, in the ladies over 30s division.

Another BeeGees filled team, the over 40s division side, finished just short in an exciting match, just placing as runners up in the grand final.

The men’s team made up of 10 current and former BeeGees players, called the Silverfoxes, placed third in their division.

Versatile ex-Beegees player, JD, who has switched to AFL, took out player of the tournament.

San Training kicking goals with club award BEERWAH’S San Training Centre has won the Community Club of the Year award at the Australia Taekwondo National Awards on October 13.

It also kicked off the start of the Australian Taekwondo National Championships at which two athletes from San Training competed.

San Training Owner, Cameron Taylor, said he was extremely proud of his club’s achievement, and credited the success to the support of the local community.

“We have great members who come and support us all the time but we do try very hard to be inclusive,” Cameron said.

“We never turn students away even if they are having troubles in getting the discipline or the culture.”

“We are very committed to following that through, that’s what I believe the point of our club is.

“We want to ensure we have an environment where everyone feels welcome.”

Cameron still doesn’t know who nominated his club and said he certainly didn’t expect to be a finalist, let alone a winner.

“I still don’t know who nominated us and what they wrote about us,” he said.

“I am feeling really happy to win and its been great to see the

support from the community and the club members.”

Division 1 Glasshouse cricket team is back in the runs

THE Division 1 Mens Glasshouse Cricket team has bounced back from a slow start to the season, winning two matches in two weeks against Caboolture and Gympie.

“I am really proud, I was quite shocked when we were nominated, someone must have seen the good work we do in the community, regardless I am very grateful for the support.”

Athletes Connor and Sonia both competed at the national championships with Sonia securing a silver medal after two gruelling fights, while Connor lost his fight in a close match, seeing him place fifth overall in his division.

“Sonia won her first fight really easily actually,” Cameron said.

“You have to win two out of three rounds and she won the first two rounds in 30 seconds, and then went down to a national team member in the final.”

“Connor unfortunately went out in his first fight, again he was fighting an experienced fighter and I wasn’t disappointed with his performance, he went really well by all accounts.”

The San Training Centre is now entering its off season following the national championships, however it will be back stronger than ever in 2024.

Joel detailed the team is struggling most with batting, but are working on strengthening this.

“We keep losing a lot of wickets, we lose a lot of momentum and its really hard to rebuild from that,” he said. “ In training and during games, we are working on trying to bat through time, so if we can bat for long periods of time the runs will come.”

The team has also received a number of new recruits, one from England, a couple from Gold Coast and one from Maroochydore, and the transition of joining the squad has been seamless.

“It was a pretty smooth transition with the new and established players, it has been good getting to know everyone, we’ve kind of gelled really nicely,”

Joel said.

Jobs for the yard in November

HERE we go again – another month down and we’re hurtling towards Christmas. So there’s lots that needs doing around the garden before then. Don’t leave it too late. Pick one or two and start this coming weekend. For me, it’s going to be pruning back the azaleas and grevilleas, then putting the cuttings through the mulcher to go into my bulk compost bin.

• Once your spring flowering bulbs – such as jonquils and daffodils – have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry dark place.

• Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed

along the flower stalks. Just plant them into a pot of quality potting mix and wait for them to grow.

• Rains and warm temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers in the garden. Pick them off and squash them or use a pyrethrum or a bacteria based spray (such as Dipel).

• Time to prune your azaleas and dead head roses to encourage continual flowering.

• Zucchinis may be showing powdery mildew (a fungal disease) on their leaves. Spray with Mancozeb or try the old one part milk to 10 parts water technique.

• Keep an eye out for bronze orange bugs on your citrus.

Knock them off and squash them. If there are fruit or flowers on the tree, spray with a pyrethrum product. If not, you can use something like Searles ‘Conguard’.

• Fruit flies will start to appear.

Keep them at bay by cleaning up old rotten fruits and using a splash bait, such as EcoNaturalure. Bag susceptible fruits with close-weave mesh or paper bags.

• Prune back your grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness and better flowering later.

• The vigorous branches of wisteria, jasmine and other energetic climbers should be taken off this month too.

• It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are developing small fruits, otherwise they stress and fall off.

• Keep spraying your developing mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose.

• Asparagus will be finishing the spring harvest of spears and the bed will now be full of ferny fronds. Keep the plants wellmulched and watered to keep the fronds actively growing as this will feed the crown for the following year.
