Beerburrum quarry quashed

By Greg Brown IT has been two years since Sunshine Coast Council, in a debate led by Cr Rick Baberowski, overwhelmingly voted to support the people of Beerburrum and refuse an application for a large hard rock quarry to be established on the outskirts of Beerburrum.

This refusal prompted an immediate appeal to the Planning and Environment Court by the applicant, construction company Barro Group.

After a protracted court battle, last week Judge Michael Williamson backed the council – and the Beerburrum community – agreeing that the development, as it was presented, was not in the overall best interests of the people of Beerburrum or the Sunshine Coast community as a whole.

The quarry application, submitted in 2017, stirred a groundswell of opposition from residents who formed a new community group – the Beerburrum Action Group – to rally against the proposal and highlight the impacts that the quarry and quarry trucks would have on their quiet township and surrounds.

Council rejected the application, citing concerns around the need for

the development, the impact on local roads, loss of vegetation and habitat, and the degradation of the amenity and character of the Beerburrum township.

In making his ruling, Judge Williamson said there was little doubt of the general need for good quality quarry materials and that this resource was of significant value to the community.

However, he declared that all three areas of conflict with the planning scheme that council identified in rejecting the original application were found to be proven. These were: (a) The impact of the development on the safe and efficient operation of the road network (site access). (b) The impact of the proposed haul route on the amenity and character of the adjoining development. (c) The impact of the development on the ecological values of the land.

Judge Williamson said the likely impacts of the quarry in these three areas were significant enough to override any discretion the court might have to approve the application on the

grounds of greater community good.

“On balance, the matters relied upon by Barro in support of approval fall well short of persuading me that an approval should follow in circumstances where a traffic safety issue is unresolved and known impacts of the use will not be avoided, or managed/mitigated in the manner anticipated by the planning scheme,” Judge Williamson said.

“Put simply, an approval does not withstand scrutiny against the planning scheme.

“The appeal will be dismissed.

“Council’s decision to refuse the development application will be confirmed.”

The council has welcomed the decision, with Deputy Mayor and local councillor Rick Baberowski saying that he knows the Beerburrum community will be extremely pleased.

“This is a win for the safety, character and amenity of this heritage town over the commercial interests of a further quarry, which we didn’t need,” Cr Baberowski said.

“They would also be delighted that

the site’s remnant vegetation will now not be cleared and will continue to support a small but valuable population of local fauna and flora.

“For well over the past two years, even as [the action group] built on their identity as a recreational trail head to the fabulous Glass House Mountains, they faced the prospect of an intense haulage route running right through the town.

“Now the community action group can move forward with confidence and work together with council on its future as a great little country town that celebrates its role as a natural and social history destination.

“I believe our legal team did an exceptional job in presenting arguments based on the greater good and that is what has prevailed in this case,” Cr Baberowski said.

In the next edition, we will report on what the win means for the Beerburrum community and for those who fought so hard to have the quarry proposal rejected.

Green light for Anzac commemorations THE state government recently announced that Queensland’s Anzac Day dawn services, marches and commemorations can go ahead this year, which has pleased the local RSL sub branches who have been busy planning local events for Sunday, April 25.

The Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it means we can gather in our streets and at cenotaphs to mark the sacrifices of previous generations, serving men and women, and their families.

“I discussed Anzac Day with Dr Jeanette Young [Queensland’s Chief Health Officer] and she is fully supportive of allowing crowds back to mark this special day,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

Outdoor events including dawn services will proceed without the need for check-in procedures while indoor events, such as in-side the RSL clubs, will require normal sign-ins.

RSL Queensland state president Tony Ferris applauded the decision and said that the RSL was overjoyed.

He said the popular Light Up the Dawn initiative introduced last year in response to crowd-free 2019 commemorations will continue this year.

This week GC&M News caught up with representatives from the Beerwah and District, Maleny, Glasshouse Country and Mapleton RSL sub branches who are all working on how they will hold their events while incorporating the necessary COVID safe practices.

Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch president Brian Machin said they had made a number of changes to this year’s events with the Glass House Mountains march taking place between the Glass House Mountains train station and the RSL sub branch hall where an outdoor service will take place instead of the usual service at the community hall.

In Landsborough only the dawn service will be held followed by the gunfire breakfast at the Landsborough Hall. There will not be a 9am march or service to follow this year.

Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch secretary Libby Brown has advised that the morning tea following the Beerwah service will move from inside the Beerwah Community Hall to be held outdoors under a marquee in Turner Park.

“Due to the number of people who participate in the Beerwah march there will also be additional COVID safe sign in/recording measures that will be implemented for those participating in the march,” Libby said.

Keeping alive the Anzac spirit

By Sonia Isaacs Clark MEMBERS of the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop are dusting down their uniforms and polishing up their saddles in preparation for Anzac Day 2021. Troop quartermaster Chas Morris said that this year a key focus would be on having members and their horses in full regalia proudly keeping the Anzac spirit alive with a parade through the main street of Maleny.

“Anzac Day is the big day of the year for us. This year we hope to have at least eight riders in full dress with their rifles, swords and bayonets along with their horses in original Light Horse tack, which includes saddle, bridle and reins, travelling along Maple Street for the parade at 11am from Watson’s Garage

to the RSL and back,” Chas said.

He said he felt it was more important than ever to keep the spirit of the Light Horse and the Anzacs alive and he hoped that younger people, especially young men, would consider getting involved to help continue to preserve the incredible stories and heroic history from this era for future generations.

“It’s important to Australians in this century to remember what people fought for and the heroism and sacrifices involved during World War I and, of course, the contribution of our Light Horse regiments. By wearing the uniforms and having our horses in Light Horse tack we can provide a living history reminder of the importance of

keeping this memory alive,” Chas said.

The 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop, formed in 1992, is a volunteer-led association, affiliated with the Australian Light Horse Association,

and is based at the Beersheba Living Museum Parklands Drive North Maleny.

While not a military organisation, the troop aims to portray a military unit and refer to original military manuals and anecdotal evidence to help the regiment conduct themselves wherever possible with historical accuracy. They are custodian to authentic and replica memorabilia, and information boards associated with World War I and, in particular, the 5th Light Horse Regiment.

Creative vision comes to fruition

By Sonia Isaacs Clark PEACHESTER artist Sally Joyce will see a long-held creative vision come to fruition when she launches a deeply personal paint and mixed media exhibition in her hometown of Kyogle on Thursday, April 1.

Her first exhibition in 24 years, Sally’s work will celebrate the innovation and scenic delight of journeying along the picturesque Lions Road in northern New South Wales, a well-travelled journey that resonates with profound significance and personal meaning to Sally.

Sally said the idea to hold an exhibition featuring a series of landscapes had been bubbling away in her mind for more than 20 years.

“Over many years I have travelled along this majestic road to and from my hometown of Kyogle,” Sally said.

“My family still lives there and trips along this route have occurred through all stages of my life. This landscape has always sung to me and travelling this road has always provided solace to me.

“It is the road that I left home on and it is the road that I am so grateful to be able to return home on to visit family,” Sally said.

The gravel road was completed in 1971 and officially opened in 1973.

The road, which is now sealed, represents one of the most ambitious and longest ongoing community-driven projects by Australian Lions clubs, championed by the Kyogle Lions Club almost 50 years ago.

Sally’s exhibition was a way for her to capture just how special this road was, as well as show her gratitude to the people who made it possible by having the foresight, determination and perseverance to build it and the ongoing civic pride it provided for the communities of Kyogle and surrounding areas.

Sally said that two years ago when in Kyogle she had visited the newly refurbished Roxy Gallery in what used to be the town library, and immediatelyy er realised it was the ideal spot to bring her exhibition idea to reality.

She knew it was the right place to show the work that was still sitting in her head. Booking the gallery was a wayy to force her to make it happen.

Originally Sally had hoped to capture every bridge crossing along the route but with 25 bridges and the road being closed for more than 12 months due to COVID-19, along with family commitments, it meant the ambitions of her original idea had to be rethought into a more practical format to ensure it happened.

Future of historic station questioned LOCALS may remember the charming old timber Beerburrum train station building, built in the early 1900s, which was removed when the 2009 rail upgrade came to town.

The heritage structure was sold to private enterprise and is now a boutique accommodation cottage at Secrets on the Lake, Montville.

In its place at Beerburrum emerged what could be described as a train station that looks like it was designed for Woodford prison – lots of cold steel.

With plans well advanced to duplicate the rail line from Beerburrum to Landsborough, a long-term local is asking whether the historic Glass House

Mountains station is next in line for demolition or sale, resulting in another piece of local history that is more than 100 years old being lost from the region.

Keith Murray, owner of the Glass House Mountains Ecolodge, said it would be a travesty if the building wasn’t retained and protected in situ as part of the duplication project.

“Glass House Mountains is known as a heritage town and the station is an echo to our past, which simply can’t be lost to us,” Keith said.

According to a 2019 Sunshine Coast Council heritage study, the station was originally built in 1890.

Although altered over time, the overall form of the structure, in particular the distinct mono-pitched roof and separate awning, have remained intact.

The heritage study identified that the building is the last of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, representing what was a common 19th century rural railway station construction.

When asked about the future of the building, a Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesperson said that the department recognised the historical significance of the Glass House Mountains Station buildings.

“There will be no impact on the buildings during stage one of the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade,” the spokesperson said.

However, the spokesperson said that during stage two some stations would be further updated and replaced, giving no indication as to whether Glass House Mountains station fell into this category.

“During the detailed design for future stages, TMR will consult with the community and carefully consider the heritage value of the buildings,” the spokesperson said.

Maleny gift card to continue WITH the initial 1,000 Maleny eftpos gift cards already close to running out due to tremendous community and local business support, Queensland Country Bank (QCB) has come on board as a key sponsor to absorb production costs for a second run of 1,000 cards.

Facilitated by Maleny Commerce, program instigator Nicole Hilton said that since launching the Why Leave Town shop local community initiative in July 2020, more than $83,000 had been loaded onto the eftpos cards that can be used at 95 local businesses and outlets around Maleny.

“QCB has offered to sponsor the $3,000 cost to purchase the new run of cards, which has come around much sooner than expected,” Nicole said.

“It’s been wonderful to see just how much the town has embraced this shop local initiative with the whole community getting on board purchasing the cards, even high schoolers.

“One of the great things about this scheme is that people come to town to spend on the card and end up purchasing additional items or stopping off for a coffee or meal, which is brilliant for our local businesses,” she said.

The new card design acknowledges the generosity of both QCB and the Maleny IGA by including the logos of both businesses. The IGA has backed the initiative since its inception.

As well as the current sponsor QCB, Maleny Commerce wanted to recognise the support of Rob Outridge and the Maleny IGA team who had not only previously purchased a substantial number of loaded cards in support of the scheme but had also gone over and above to cover staff time and any additional eftpos fees to assist customers to purchase and load cards from the store, which is one of the top five gift card load up stores in Australia.

New housing estate for Maleny

GET ready Maleny, there could be more people moving to town.

Plans were submitted to Sunshine Coast Council last week for a new 65 lot subdivision on the dairy paddocks between Tallowwood and Bunya streets.

As the lands are already zoned for low-density housing, the development is deemed as code assessable, meaning that the planning assessment process is straightforward and no community notice or consultation is required.

The proposal is to split the current three blocks (totalling 9.212ha) into 65 low-density residential lots ranging from 800m2 to 1,728m2 in size, two park lots and three drainage lots.

The lot sizes are equal to or larger than what is required under the planning scheme and the housing density averages seven dwellings per hectare, which the application claims to be consistent with the density envisaged by the planning scheme.

The inclusion of larger blocks is a consequence of the site having slopes of up to 20%, which under the planning scheme requires larger lots to be provided.

The council said no vehicle access would be allowed via Cudgerie Street road reserve, which adjoins the landholding to the north. Consequently, a single access road in and out has been planned onto Bunya Street, adjacent to the current National Parks and Wildlife Service complex.

A traffic assessment report submitted with the application finds that Bunya Street will adequately accommodate the extra traffic resulting from the 65-lot development.

Two play parks have been included as well as an area where development is constrained and maintained as open space by slashing.

To alleviate water quality issues, a drainage biofiltration basin block is included that will retain and process stormwater run-off from the development before it reaches the sensitive Obi Obi Creek. According to the engineering consultant’s report there will be “…no worsening of the upstream and downstream waterways …” because of the recommended stormwater management.

Other surrounding undeveloped blocks outside of the application will likely be targeted for associated residential developments in the future.

However, two large adjacent grazing blocks adjoining the Obi Obi Creek opposite Coral Street have development constraints included in the planning scheme, making it unlikely that they will be targeted for subdivision.

The application has been made on behalf of RM Developments (Qld) Pty Ltd. An owner’s consent form supplied with the subdivision development application shows that the land is owned by the RMD Maleny Pty Ltd AFT RMD Maleny Unit Trust, with the form signed by Remi Rafter and Ben Crosby, but with no positions or titles given.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Remi Rafter is associated with development company Pindan as an acquisitions manager. His wife Lara Rafter is listed on her LinkedIn profile as a property developer with RM Developments.

RM Developments is a Sunshine Coast-based property development, project management and construction business that manages multiple projects across the state.

Ben Crosby is the son of the late Peter Crosby who owned the farming land at Palmview that has been developed as the Harmony integrated residential estate.

Maleny Show’s cookery camaraderie

AFTER more than 30 years with the Maleny Show Society, chief steward of the cookery, junior cookery and cake decorating sections, Glennis Barber, is untying her apron strings and preparing to retire after many happy years.

The Maleny Show Society is now on the lookout for others who are keen to become a cooking steward.

GC&M News caught up with Glennis to find out what kept her volunteering year after year.

Glennis was keen to let us know that the success of the cookery section at the Maleny Show was not just down to her but due to the team effort of the ladies involved, especially longstanding stewards Laurelle Newton and Linda Fawkes.

Glennis said the role was never an arduous one, generally only requiring a couple of hours a week at certain times a year. The busiest time was the competition judging day, always held on the day before the show opens to the public.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working closely with the other ladies who ran the section, as well as committee members of the show society,” she said.

“The show was always a friendly and fun event, and while many traditional aspects have remained, over the years there have been some changes including the introduction of using computerised information to streamline processes and new classes of entry.

“For many years, our class categories were virtually the same since the early days. However, in more recent years we’ve seen people’s cooking habits and ideas evolve and so we’ve tried to adapt to those changes, for example, in healthier food options and trialling different classes such as a men’s only class (packet chocolate cake with icing!) and other varieties of homemade bread.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time working as a steward and it’s been very rewarding and a lot of fun, as well as a wonderful way to develop some longterm friendships, meet others and be part of an important calendar highlight for the Maleny community.”

While Glennis is now ready to hand over the spoon to someone younger, she said there were many good perks to the role, including learning useful cooking tips from the judges and, if you were particularly lucky, you might even get

She said computers and emails had made many of the jobs involved with being a steward much easier and less time consuming. Glennis is happy to help people interested in becoming stewards by assisting them to move into the role.

“There isn’t a requirement to be a

great baker, cake decorator and cook at all, just an enthusiasm to get the job done and to make things run as smoothly as possible,” she said.

Mooloolah bus win

No right turn from Moroney Place

By Sonia Isaacs Clark MOOLOOLAH local Lisa West’s battle to have a subsidised school bus service for her children and others who attend their local catchment high school is a step closer with a subsidised service to Maleny State High set to start in term three this year.

Lisa said the issue was one she had been fighting for the past four years, particularly when Education Queensland amended the catchment zone for Maleny State High to include parts of Mooloolah.

“Ultimately I have always felt that kids attending high school should be eligible for safe subsidised transport irrelevant of their address or chosen school,” Lisa said.

“When our high school catchment area changed and our children were unable to access a subsidised bus service from Mooloolah I felt the system wasn’t fair and equitable, and that fired me up to go into bat.”

Lisa said she originally approached the Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle in 2017 with a local petition signed by more than 200 residents and parents that was presented to Parliament. In 2018 she approached her new local representative, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell,

Since then, Lisa noted a substantial increase every year in the number of kids from the area attending Maleny High and she continued to persistently pursue the issue.

She said Andrew Powell’s office had been very responsive in acknowledging her concerns and following up the issue.

“While this is a fantastic outcome for us in the Mooloolah area, the School Transport Assistance Scheme still needs to change, and so I urge people to sign the current petition of review put forward by Andrew Powell,” Lisa said.

AS part of the development application for the proposed Coles supermarket in Beerwah, the state government has provided information to Sunshine Coast Council on what needs to be considered when assessing the impacts on the statemanaged road network.

The State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) provided its response on March 15, outlining a number of conditions that must be attached to any development approval it may give in the future.

Among a suite of conditions, SARA said that if the development was to proceed, the Moroney Place and Roys Road intersection must be changed to force all traffic to only exit left from Moroney Place and not turn right towards the Steve Irwin Way traffic lights.

This will result in all exiting traffic turning down Roys Road towards the highway, even if they want to go towards Beerwah.

If drivers want to come back to the Steve Irwin Way traffic lights, they will have to travel down Roys Road to a new intersection providing access into the Coles, petrol station and McDonald’s developments, travel

into the development, go around an internal roundabout and back to the intersection with Roys Road and turn left onto Roys Road towards Steve Irwin Way … except trucks.

Large trucks, including b-doubles such as those from Armestos in Moroney Place, and potentially many others making deliveries into businesses through the industrial estate won’t be so lucky.

They will have to enter the new development but won’t be allowed to go around the internal roundabout.

Large trucks will have to turn right into the new petrol station where they will turn around within that complex and exit back to the Roys Road intersection, turning left to head back towards Steve Irwin Way. The development application for the Coles supermarket is under active assessment by the planning staff at the council. No date is set for a decision to be made.

The other two associated applications – one to split the land into four parcels and the other to build a petrol station and fast food outlet (McDonald’s) – have been put on hold by the developer.

Easter time will be Kombi time

FOR well over a decade, Volkswagen Kombi lovers from all over Australia have gathered at destinations up and down the east coast at Easter time for their annual Kombi Club Bus Stop.

This Easter, keep an eye out over the long weekend as a ‘komvoy’ of Kombis will be heading our way. Everyone’s favourite happy (or should we say hippy) vehicles will be gathering with their owners at the Maleny Showground from Easter Friday, April 2 until Monday, April 5, for the three-day VW love fest that marks the annual social event and campout for members of the online KombiClub Australia Forums community.

One of the event organisers, Trish Larfield (owner of a ’74 model called ‘Merle’), said they were expecting around 170 people to attend, with about 80 Kombis already registered.

Bus Stop Maleny 2021 will have a packed program of activities including kombi toy races and a Kombi Club grand prix, a gala Australian TV and film themed fancy dress dinner, and awards night at the showground pavilion.

Balmoral Ridge park from 10am will no doubt be a highlight, as well as an awesome sight for local residents and visitors.

“We’re not really like a normal car club. We all travel up in our vans and believe there are no bad Kombis, so we have a real mix of vehicles from ratty ones that have old and rusty patinas to beautifully restored ones that can be quite expensive,” Trish said.

“We are all passionate about our love for our vehicles and they’ve all got names and even their own personalities!”

Trish said the KombiClub Forums community was a friendly and supportive bunch of Kombi aficionados who all look out for each other and enjoy socialising.

“Kombi people are always chilled out and happy. Many of us are either old hippies or people that have had Kombis in their family or memories from their youth,” Trish said.

“It great to see how much happiness they bring to people, including ourselves, when we have our cruises. People love to see all the different types and colours on display.

“They always bring a smile to people’s faces.”

Maleny man wins gold

MALENY local Russell Eggins won gold in Maydena, Tasmania at the AusCycling Mountain Bike National Championships masters event on March 12.

This was Russell’s first year competing in the national championships and he won the race convincingly, with a lead of more than two minutes despite sustaining a broken toe in training rides leading up to the event.

Leesa Tilden, from Flaunt Maleny, said it was a fantastic fundraiser that was a lot of fun for everyone. She said she was blown away by the incredible support from everyone who donated their time and the Maleny businesses who backed the event with generous donations of vouchers and merchandise.

Ewen Maddock Dam is back on track

IF you have driven past the Ewen Maddock Dam since the last big rains, you’d have seen that the water level is on the rise. And it seems that it’s going to keep rising too.

According to a spokesperson from Seqwater, the upgrade project which required the dam level to be significantly lowered so that repair works could happen on the actual dam wall, have now finished.

“We can confirm that the 60% restricted supply level to safely undertake the dam embankment construction works were completed in December last year,” the spokesperson said, “and the dam is naturally returning to full supply level.”

The dam level now sits at over 75%, so a few more significant rain events should see it overflowing once again.

The news from Seqwater is also good for the users of Maddock Park on the Glenview side.

“Works are currently 3 - 4 months ahead of schedule with the opening of Maddock Park now anticipated within the next few months,” they announced.

Although the news is all good for Ewen Maddock Dam, the same can’t be said for the combines south-east Queensland water grid network.

The recent wet weather has seen the region’s combined water supply level rise by 3% to be at 59%, with Wivenhoe Dam, the region’s largest and most important drinking water storages, only reaching 37.3%.

The majority of rain fell in the coastal catchments, rather than in the western regions.

Have your say … hinterland recreation trail AS part of the Beerburrum to Nambour upgrade (B2N) rail duplication project, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) plans to construct a recreation trail for cyclists and pedestrians linking Beerburrum to Landsborough alongside the new rail corridor.

The Queensland Government has allocated $6.5 million to plan a 17km-long recreation trail and to construct the first stretch between Beerburrum and Landsborough.

A TMR spokesperson said the project would benefit the local community and wider region, providing connections between townships and access to local tourism attractions and numerous national park trail heads.

“The recreation trail will also improve safety by providing an alternative to Steve Irwin Way and other busy nearby roads and intersections for local pedestrians and cyclists,” the spokesperson said.

A keen supporter of the idea is newly elected Caloundra state MP Jason Hunt.

He said there was opportunity to convert part of the current rail corridor into a trail for use by pedestrians and bike riders.

“Speaking with the community, I know just how passionate they are about better active transport,” Mr Hunt said.

“This is the type of infrastructure that attracts visitors and locals alike, creating new opportunities for local businesses, cafes, shops, accommodation providers and other tourism operators.”

He has been relieving in the role since late last year and we are happy to have him as our new permanent boss.

it’s great to be able to think about getting away for a few days over Easter this year after being in lockdown at the same time last year.

I’m sure lots of readers are planning trips. I hope you are also planning your drive. Fatigue is one of the fatal five causes of serious traffic crashes in Queensland.

Tragically, this year’s road toll is already at 61 – that’s 21 more than the same time last year. Police across the Sunshine Coast will be out in force across the holiday period.

There has recently been an increased focus on one of the other fatal five, which is drug driving. There have been several operations run in the area recently with increased testing capabilities.

Please stay safe on our roads. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

We were meant to get back into party mode in February. Unfortunately it is just not practical. While it would be possible to cap numbers and the venue is quite large, ensuring that 100odd school children comply with social distancing would require substantially more volunteers than we have.

Hopefully we can restart them soon.

The next date is potentially in April so watch this space.

At this stage our local NHW group is looking as if it may fold completely after the retirement of our president Ron and secretary/treasurer Maree, both of whom have given years of service.

The group had been based on a more traditional formal meeting style, which was originally how all NHW groups were run. Technology has come a long way since the early days of NHW though and there are now options to have entirely online groups or a mix of both.

Skippy Park drainage works

FIELD drainage improvement works at Skippy Park in Landsborough are set to start to improve the useability of the field.

The work, to be carried out by Sunshine Cost Council, has been financed through the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover COVID stimulus funding. It will address the ongoing concerns of the community and local sporting groups about the poor drainage for the well-used sports field, with usage often restricted for prolonged periods due to inadequate drainage.

Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said the improvements would include subsoil drainage to move surface and ground water away from the oval fed by a series of sand slits at 250mm spacing across the field, surface top dressing, concrete lining for the current drainage swale on the southern boundary, and construction of a new crossover to the field from the club area.

The project is welcomed by Glasshouse District Little Athletics, which has had tenure at Skippy Park since July 2020.

Locals March 4 Justice in Maleny

MANy Maleny residents headed to Brisbane and the coast for the important March 4 Justice rallies on March 15, while a small group of Maleny residents also held a vigil in Maple Street.

Joan McVilly, organiser of the impromptu Maleny event, said that, sadly, virtually all women know intimately what the anger was about.

“We are all impacted by the use of gender-driven power,” Joan said.

“The sign ‘enough is enough’ is in response to generations in Australia that have seen such things as women treated as objects, shamed, not have the vote and not be able to work once married.

Club manager John Byford said that over the past few years Little Athletics’ seasons had been severely impacted by rain, with numerous events, carnivals and run nights cancelled. There were also disruptions to local school sports carnivals with water often remaining on the ground for days after a rain event had passed, making the grounds slippery and unsafe.

“The club had been in talks with council representatives and Cr Baberowski before tenure was signed about their concerns with the drainage issues,” John said.

“After council inspected the fields, it was noted that a lot of work was needed and we are appreciative that this project was flagged by council as a necessity,” he said.

Rob Morris showed us his Moon chart and explained how to use it to choose the best time to sow seeds for aboveground plants and the best time for root veges and bulbs. According to the Moon chart, March 30 and 31 are a good time to plant garlic.

New member Mark Jones told us about refurbishing his garden with clearing and building raised garden beds. His favourite garden tool at the moment is a chainsaw.

Results of the competition bench for February were first Suella Lanceley 22 points, second Pam Innes 19 points and third Trish Bradford 17 points.

Fitness centre gets moving The new premises at Turner Park

ALL in One Fitness Beerwah has relocated to its new home in Turner Park Shopping Village, with the finishing touches being put on the freshly renovated new gym space.

Owner Taz Calandruccio said the new location would feature a big open plan room and newly installed amenities including all access facilities open to the community from the end of March.

Taz and his team had already been running group fitness classes in shop five at the shopping village and he is looking forward to welcoming the community into the new expanded gym space located next to the chiropractor and psychologist in the old Pocket Books shop.

“It’s bright and airy with great ducted air-con, which our members will love.

The new location is fantastic, and nice and central to other classes we run at the Beerwah Community Hall for seniors, and the group fitness and yoga at Turner

Park on the weekends,” Taz said.

Purchasing the building has meant that Taz and his business partner Don Meiklejohn could design the new gym space exactly how they wanted.

Their previous location had some heritage listing restrictions, which meant the space had to be segmented.

They are really pleased to be able to offer a more open space in the new building.

The new gym is right near a bookshop and café, which is also great for our members to enjoy after their workout,” Taz said.

All in One Fitness currently employs 12 trainers and four reception staff and offers up to four classes a day. A special relocation offer is available for those considering joining the communityfriendly gym.

Have your say on the new COVID vaccines AS Australia rolls out COVID-19 vaccines, psychology researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) are inviting the public to share how they feel about receiving the vaccines.

Dr Karina Rune and Dr Jacob Keech from USC have launched an online survey to gather as many responses as possible to assemble a snapshot of public sentiment on the topic.

Dr Rune said the findings from the survey at this critical point in the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines could help inform communication campaigns to encourage greater uptake across the country.

“To date, there has been a lot of discussion around the vaccines but not as much detail provided to the public on the rigour of the scientific process involved in their development,” Dr Rune said.

Dr Keech said their study was based on a recent questionnaire completed by a diverse range of respondents from the Sunshine Coast, a region with one of the lowest rates of vaccination uptake generally in Australia.

“We have seen early reports that people who commonly get vaccinated say they might be a bit hesitant this time around, so from this study we want to get a deeper understanding of this hesitancy,” Dr Keech said.

The researchers plan to follow up those who participated in the study after vaccines have been sufficiently rolled out across Australia to understand how early sentiment relates to the actual vaccine uptake.

Maleny Anglican Parish LIFE and death. We see it all around us in all parts of the creation but especially we have seen or heard of so much death due to the coronavirus pandemic, which continues to afflict our world. As we move towards Easter, the themes of life and death are highlighted in our services. We reflect on the life and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. On Maundy Thursday evening we celebrate the communion that he instigated in the Last Supper; then on Good Friday, with the altar and sanctuary stripped bare of all it’s furniture and adornments, we enter into the horrendous crucifixion and death of Jesus. Holy Saturday is a still day in which nothing occurs as we continue to meditate on Jesus’s sacrificial love for us – until the Easter Vigil and Easter Day services that take us from death into life – glorious LIFE as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus’s followers stood by the cross or gathered in secret, filled and surrounded with a sense of death being final – the end of Jesus and all they had hoped for. But Easter morning turned that upside down, bringing joy and hope and the assurance that we are not left alone. That message of hope remains for us today. The great three days of Easter tell us clearly that while darkness and death may seem to triumph, God has an answer. There is light, there is hope and there is LIFE that comes after we walk through dark times. May you find renewed hope and joy as you celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and victorious LIFE.

When Jesus was hanging on the cross, the sceptics and critics mocked him and in affect said, if you’re the Son of God, why don’t you just pull yourself down from that cross and show that you’re really God? Jesus had something more spectacular planned. He essentially said, I’m going to let you bury me for three days, then I’ll come back to life to prove that I am the Son of God. In one sense, Jesus Christ is still on trial.

You see, Easter really boils down to only two things. Is Jesus who he says he is? Is he God? Or is he a lunatic or a liar? And two, if he is who he says he is, will you believe and start following what he says to do with your life? What’s your verdict?

Romans 5:8: But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Notice this verse says while we were sinners and not ‘when we finally got our stuff together, Christ died for us’ but while we were in sin he lifted us out of our sin. No one likes being told they are a sinner. But God in His great love wants to free us from everything that doesn’t honour him. God takes us in at our lowest point to elevate us and love on us.

Glasshouse Country Baptist Church JESUS is a fascinating figure. He didn’t play by the religious people’s rules, he didn’t play by the government’s rules, he offended the rich, he went around doing good, saying things no one quite expected, and yet, he ended up being cancelled by the people he came to help.

On the surface Jesus’s life and subsequent death should have been a failure. When he died even his followers ran away. But the Bible says it was all part of God’s plan to bring peace on Earth and goodwill towards men.

Jesus rose from the dead, proving that the government and religious leaders weren’t in control. Jesus’s resurrection gives us the way back to God. As a result of His resurrection, we know what God is like and how much He loves us. We also know what God wants us to do and that is to reconnect with Him. The first Easter gives us hope, meaning and purpose. Find out more by coming to church this Easter.

THE work of Sunshine Coast artist Patricia Wheatstone is currently on display at Vianta Arts Beerwah until April 25.

Patricia loves to create pieces that are fun. She is inspired by aerial viewpoints and colour in its infinite variations and intensities.

Her paintings, although referencing actual things and places, are usually imagined.

Patricia describes her painting style as a fictitious narrative that has its basis in the connectedness of the various things in her painting, whether they be connections of experience, purpose, shape or colour, etc.

YOU Vaccine rollout farce

AGAINST my better judgement I have decided to get the low efficacy AstraZeneca vaccine because it’s far better to get the vaccine rather than catch COVID. I am eligible under the Morrison government’s vaccination program phase 1b but can I find a place to book a vaccination? No. I have contacted the government’s Healthdirect site and they referred me to three places – one in Mapleton, one in Beerwah and the last in Nambour.

The reply was that they were only administering the vaccine to their patients. I thought that this was a national roll out?

My doctor at the Kawana Family Clinic is not administering the vaccine so I am unable to find a place on the Sunshine Coast to get a vaccine.

The whole Morrison government roll out of the vaccines is a farce. If a small country like Israel can have half its population vaccinated in the space of three months, what has the Australian Government got to show for itself in two months? 300,000 people at best.

I would expect better from a developed health system like ours.

Coalition women need to stand up

AS the most dishonest and absolutely useless government this country has suffered, how much longer do we have to wear these clowns?

The series of self-inflicted crises that continue to be revealed confirms that they are not fit to govern.

The women in the Coalition have a responsibility to the women of the country more so than their party and they can bring resolution to the suite of scandals plaguing the government by resigning from the party and going to sit on the crossbench.

Who do they actually represent, because if it is only themselves, they should not be in Parliament drawing a generous salary for doing nothing.

The rorts, lies and sex scandals have to stop but with a spineless PM, who will be remembered for being worse than Tony Abbot and continues to be caught out telling porkies and pork barrelling, the Australian public should not have to tolerate this any longer.

If the Coalition women have any substance, they can put an end to this miserable and feeble government immediately.

Hopefully, the women of Australia lobby the women of the Coalition to stand up and represent them so we can rid ourselves of the inept morons currently destroying our country.

Not always told the truth

I would like to comment on Paul Prociv’s letter in GC&M News (February 16) regarding the validity of Bruce Pascoe’s work.

My comments are this - Pascoe’s book ‘Dark Emu’ literally turns everything on its head.

I am 69 so those reading this of my vintage will relate to the following.

My schooling went from 1957 to 1969. To give two examples of history at that time.

First, we were taught that regarding Antarctic exploration around 1912, that Captain Scott and his three companions were so unlucky as to be the second team to reach the South Pole behind Amundsen.

The real heroes of the Antarctic were the scientific teams of Shackleton and Mawson. These two weren’t mentioned in our history books, just the British connection.

Second, in early Australia John Macarthur was held in high esteem as a great pastoralist and businessman in our history books back then.

When Governor Lachlan Macquarie realised Macarthur was doing deals with the NSW Rum Corp and using convicts and Indigenous people as free labor to build his empire, the good Governor banished him back to England in disgrace.

So we haven’t always been told the truth throughout our history. There is a common trend in society that when someone dares to propose something completely the opposite, we want to tear that person down.

Bruce Pascoe’s ‘Dark Emu’ has 42 pages of direct references. Get the book and have a read.

World Day of Prayer

DESPITE COVID restrictions, 73 people attended the World Day of Prayer service for 2021 hosted by the Baptist Church in Beerwah on March 4.

The country of focus this year was Vanuatu and the guest speaker Matt Gibson spoke about living in Vanuatu as a child and was able to tie in his memories with this year’s theme ‘Build on a strong foundation’.

The generosity of those present amounted to $924.50 being donated towards assisting many worthy projects in Vanuatu – thank you all.

Safety upgrades for hinterland roads

Maleny artists win

THIS month the federal government has invested another $4.87 million in road safety upgrades in our region.

In the hinterland these upgrades will include the sealing of Citrus Road between Wilkins Lane and Eudlo School Road in Palmwoods, as well as the resurfacing of McCarthy Road in Maleny, Bald Knob Road around Hodgens Road in Peachester, Old Gympie Road from Coonowrin Road and Sahara Road, and Railway Street in Landsborough.

I know from my Tour de Fisher how rough and dangerous these roads are.

These upgrades, along with the major improvements we are making to Steve Irwin Way, are going to help all of us get home sooner and safer.

CONGRATULATIONS to Maleny’s Marvene Ash for winning an excellence award and Shannon Garson for winning the best three-dimensional prize at the Local Artists – Local Content Art Prize exhibition.

Volunteers grants available now Volunteers are playing a huge role today all over our community helping people who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. To give them a leg up, the federal government is

Bat Night returns

Multi-million dollar road boost I am pleased to announce Division 5 will benefit from more than $3.5 million of road upgrades.

Works are scheduled to begin this year thanks to funding from council and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.

Projects will include improvements to Hodgens Road at Bald Knob, King Road at Mooloolah Valley, Mountain View Road at Maleny and Citrus Road at Eudlo.

THIS fortnight has been all about roads, roundabouts and bike trails, with the launch of my petition for the federal government to come to the table for Third Avenue/Nicklin Way upgrade funding and the consultation now open on the Beerburrum to Landsborough recreation trail.

Caloundra residents are still left in the dark about funding of the upgrade of Third Avenue by Andrew Wallace, the federal LNP Member for Fisher.

There’s now a live petition online that I will take to the federal government to let them know the Sunshine Coast is done with being taken for granted. Plant beetroot, broccoli, radish, cabbage, leafy lettuce, carrot, celery, cauliflower, Asian greens, garlic, leeks, spring onion, potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, kohlrabi, capsicum, chilli, silverbeet, beans and tomato.

• PLANT sweet peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, climbing peas and bush peas. Plant as either seed or seedlings into soil that has had some dolomite added. Maybe try asparagus peas.

• Start to reduce the frequency you mow the lawn and start raising the blade height to allow the grass to keep a reasonable amount of leaf during the cooler months.

• Fertilise your roses, especially if you haven’t done it for a few years.

• It’s time to dig up, divide and replant your hippeastrum and lilium bulbs.

• Bougainvillea cuttings can be taken now and struck in a good propagation mix.

• Clean up the last of the summer vegetable crops. Use all the prunings, weeds and the remains of summer vegetables that have finished to start a compost heap.

• Most winter vegetables can go in now, especially the brassica family – Asian greens, broccoli, kale and collards, mustard and cabbage.

• Plant new pawpaw trees. Apply some boron to existing plants at a rate of 20g per tree and spray them with a copper spray if black spot is seen.

• Carefully cut off side shoots of bromeliads to create new plants. Plant these in the garden or in pots using a well-drained potting mix.

• Prune passionfruit vines. Cut the laterals back to two buds.

• Garlic can be planted until the end of April. Planting after this date reduces the size of the bulbs.

• Try not to be tempted by displays of tulips and hyacinths in supermarkets as they have most likely been grown in cool houses and are very unlikely to do well in our climate.

In the ladies’ event first place went to Laraine Browne 37 points, runner-up Wendy O’Connell 34 points and third Roslyn Hynard 33 points.

Maleny Bowls Contributed by Miles Allen ON the week beginning March 15, the rain forced us to cancel our monthly pairs competition, Tuesday morning bowls and twilight bowls.

of rain. There were some mixed results with many teams making the most of last week’s cancellation to rest their weary bowling arms.

After the games, the John William’s Three Flamingos remain one point ahead of Paul Kemp’s RPT. The Musketeers and the Tutors are battling it out to see who gets closest to winning the wooden spoon. However, there are still three games left in this competition and so in theory, there are lots of teams who could win the coveted trophy.

Scroungers on Friday was played in beautiful conditions. Brett Gillis returned to his usual form and beat Ian Chatterton and Joe Walters. In a very closely matched game, Margaret Ginns beat husband Don Ginns and Dennis Kyling. Ben Fawns beat Wendy Bulger and Judith Lees, but Wendy was not far behind.

Liz Williams, Mick Bulger and John Williams battled it out to the end. John just managed to pick up two points and narrowly defeated wife Liz. In the previous week’s games, the winners were Joe Walters, Brian Squires, Judith Lees, Roy Gesch and Frank Buckley.

In the next seven days we are sending teams to Woodford and Mapleton where we are hoping to maintain our reputation as a friendly club that competes to win, sometimes does, but is not afraid to lose and celebrate with the winners.

BeeGees Football Club Contributed by Jodie Morgan ROUND 2 and this week saw most of our teams take to the fields. Our premier women’s team managed to come away with the points on Friday night. On Saturday night, after leading 3-0 at half time, Beegees reserve men held off a resurgent Buderim team to take their first points for the year. Our premier men’s team were unable to put away some chances early in the game, which was then followed by the hosts scoring four goals. A goal in the final 15 minutes turned out to be a consolation.

Coach Shaun said the U16 girls, gave it their all with a 3-0 win in hot and humid conditions. Many players were getting fatigued so having Maddie, Mia and AJ on the bench to help out was a big plus for us, thank you girls. NYU never broke our solid backline so Poppy was never threatened. Midfield controlled the game and set up many of the chances.

The forwards worked hard again to keep pressure on NYU ‘s defence. Natalia was unlucky hitting the post twice, and credit goes to Kenzis who is getting more involved each week. Well done girls great effort!

Our first home game for 2021 is Friday, April 9 when our premier women’s team take on NYU. Come on down and support our teams!

This year we are running the bar as well – if you want to help out with the bar or canteen on our home games let us know – we are always looking for more volunteers.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley Sunday, March 7: Wikings had a great day out travelling to Gympie for the first match of the vets season. Pauline Fraley drove us in limousine-style comfort in the VW camper (which needs a name).

Short of men players for the first round, Wikings were Glenno Smith, Robbo Weller, Mikey Hooley, Paulinee Fraley, Cindy Harris and Maree Hooley. It’s not a score line we wish to remember, so we don’t, but pleased to say that the champs of the day were Cindy (playing number four man) and Glenn winning a set!

Wednesday, March 10: Witta Wagtails played against Maleny Magics. There were some long games but the Wagtails only came away winning two sets, with the Magics the winners on the day.

Nevertheless, the Wagtails thoroughly enjoyed the competition. Thanks to Gerry Gabriel, Cheryl Cavanagh, Cynthia Garvie and Sonia Douglas.

DEATH NOTICE TEAKLE - Graeme Leonard Lily and Hayley

Kids living their dream show jumping Contributed by Kelly Wall THREE students from Glasshouse Christian College – Hayley Wall year 3, Lily Short year 6 and Tyler Short year 9 – recently competed at the Victory College Interschool Competition at Gympie.

Hayley placed first in the 50cm and second in the 60cm height riding her horse Indie 500 and was awarded Overall Primary School Champion for the weekend. Lily placed third in the 80cm and fifth in the 70cm on her horse Sonny, and second in the 90cm on her

other horse Tommy, placing second overall. Tyler placed fifth in the 1m10 and second in the 1m20 on Cora, placing second overall for high school.

Earlier in the month the students competed at the Wide Bay Regional Interschool Equestrian Championship on March 6-7. Lily was named overall winner in the primary 70cm jump and second in the 90cm jump; Tyler placed in the top ten in both the 90cm and 110cm jump height; and Hayley placed third overall in the 60cm height.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker THE Fun Rovers group visited on Thursday, March 4 to play golf croquet in the morning. It was pleasing to see 25 people playing on half-courts having a great time. Unfortunately, they stole all of the good weather for the day. In the afternoon it was too wet to play.

On Sunday, March 7, Miggy Mackie beat Vince Carbery 20–9. Nick Cram played well against Val Carbery winning 19–10. Ken Barker and Stuart Craig were away to a good start against Helen Andrews and Sarah Widin but Sarah showed class to come back late in the piece to make a winning break with the final score 14–13. Janelle Wilson played well to beat Wallace Roy 11–6, scoring, she thinks, her first singles win in club play. Well done Janelle. All games were played in a lively manner with a fair amount of banter adding to the enjoyment of the day.

On Thursday, March 11, Sarah, who pegged out her ball, and Donna Manning made 17 to beat Val and Vince 12. Helen Uhlmann and Lynette Evans teamed up to play a good game against 40

Wallace, eventually going down 8–11.

At Glasshouse Mountains Coffee – Moby Vic’s on the highway We at based on the Bruce Highway at Glasshouse Mountains and have a busy Cafe and Drive thru we are expanding our team to cater for our increased demand.

We are seeking a capable and experienced BARISTA who has experience with a proven track record. to serve our loyal customers and maybe have ability to run a shift at the Cafe.

We are also seeking an experienced TILL STAFF MEMBERS with a great manner on welcoming our customers and who can take accurate orders and deliver fabulous Coffee.

We at times are fast paced and busy, with high demand for our coffee, which requires the successful candidate to be able to cope with a fast paced environment in which to operate and this absolutely requires an experienced barista who can consistently make great coffees.

Our onsite Roastery imports World Class beans, and we are looking for that someone who has a love and passion for coffee. If you can show experience in the above areas, then we are looking for YOU! We have earlier morning starts at 5am weekdays in our drive-thru, 6am on weekends and must also be available for rotational roster on weekends. Some shifts will be offered for afternoon later starts at 11-5.30pm.

As a Barista you will need a can-do attitude and to have at least 2-3 years experience and capable of handling a fast pace environment that the morning trade requires at times. We require the skill set of being able to set all grinders, and good knowledge of timing of shots on the coffee machine with knowledge so as to be able to fully set-up and close down the machine. We require you to have the ability to be able to make cold drinks and handling of food for grab and go orders will also be a part of the duties; and have knowledge of POS to take orders from time to time.

We are looking for good staff members to join us and you will be rewarded accordingly to your skill sets, attitude, responsibilities and overall work ethic.

The successful applicants must be able to hold a drivers license, (as no public transport is available to our location), provide a medical certificate of fitness to work, police clearance and provide work and personnel references.

Our successful applicants will have immediate start over the next few weeks once going through the interview and trial process. We look forward to receiving your applications.

A man was driving along the freeway when he noticed the Easter Bunny hopping along the middle of the road.

He swerved but unfortunately the Easter Bunny jumped right in front of his truck and sadly the Bunny and his basket of Easter eggs went flying all over the highway.

The man pulled over to the side of the freeway and got out to see what had become of the Easter Bunny.

Much to his dismay, the Bunny was stone cold dead.

The driver felt so guilty he began to cry.

A woman driving down the freeway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She jumped out of her car and asked the man what was the matter.

“I feel so terrible,” he explained. “I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny and now it’s dead. There may not be an

Easter ever again because of me. I don’t know what to do.”

The woman went to her car, pulled out a spray can, walked over to the limp, dead Bunny and sprayed the entire contents of the can onto the little furry animal.

Miraculously the Easter Bunny came to back life, jumped up, picked up all the spilled Easter eggs and Easter candy, waved, then hopped down the road.

Fifty metres away the Easter Bunny stopped, turned around, waved and hopped on down the road another 50m, turned, waved, hopped another 50m and waved again!

The man asked: “What was in that spray can?”

The woman turned the can around so the man could read the label.

It said: “Hair spray. Restores life to dead hairs. Adds a permanent wave.”
