Hi Everyone...

For the past few weeks GC&M News has been full of stories of local politics, which candidates were offering what, and plenty of encouragement from letter writers as who was most deserving of your vote.

While we won’t know the final outcome for the state for some days or into next week, it would seem that our little neck of the woods will once again be represented by the local serving LNP members Andrew Powell for Glass House and Mark McArdle for Caloundra.

Being part of a local newspaper during the election lead up, you get to see a bit more of a behind the scenes view of democracy at work, and I have to say I admire the determination and commitment shown by all the candidates to stand up and have their say.

Running a campaign, co-ordinating a group of supporters, being interviewed on TV and radio, speaking at candidates events, writing columns for local newspapers, door knocking and everything else that comes with the process over a one month period is a massive effort and I congratulate the candidates on their hard work.

Now it seems fitting to say, the election is over, so let the fun begin – bring on Christmas and the holiday season.

Yes, Christmas isn’t just a day it is a whole month and we have so many celebrations and activities happening locally that you will want to check out our Christmas event listings on pages 10 and 12 so you don’t miss out!

Local News No change to local members

By Greg Brown Despite early predictions, both local sitting members appear to have retained their seats, with Andrew Powell clawing back some of the support he lost at the 2015 election.

At the time of going to print (midday Monday) and with some votes and preferences yet to be counted, the results show that the LNP’s Mark McArdle looks certain to be returned as the member for Caloundra with 9,798 primary votes, and the rest as follows... Jason Hunt – ALP (7,272), Rod Jones – One Nation (5,508) and Marcus Finch – Greens (2,605).

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) gives the two party preferred preference allocation as 53.81% to Mark McArdle and 46.19% to Jason Hunt.

In the electorate of Glass House, Andrew Powell (LNP) received 8,925 primary votes, leading Brent Hampstead – ALP (6,691), Tracey Bell-Henselin – One Nation (5,662), Sue Weber – Greens (3,137) and Sue Mureau – Independent (694).

After preferences, the ECQ have Andrew Powell at 52.27% and Brent Hampstead 47.73%.

This result is a slight improvement for Andrew on the 2015 results which saw him squeeze into a victory with 50.9% of the preference vote.

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party candidates both polled in the low 20% range – 22.5% for Tracey Bell-Henselin and 21.9% for Rod Jones.

This was well above the state average of 13.7% for One Nation primary votes, making the local region a core of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation’s support base.

Across the broader region, the Sunshine Coast now has a deeper ‘blue rinse’ with the LNP holding every seat – Glass House, Caloundra, Kawana, Buderim, Nicklin and Ninderry. The only splash of colour appears to be in the north, where former Noosa Mayoral candidate Sandy Bolton has defeated the LNP’s Glen Elmes as the new Member for Noosa.

While the bigger picture of who will form a government remains open, the ABC’s Anthony Green gives Labor 43 seats, LNP 35, Katters Australia Party 2 and one independent, with 12 seats still in doubt.

The ABC’s modelling gives Labor 48 seats, one more than the 47 needed to form a majority government.

This situation brings into doubt the election promises made by both Andrew and Mark... funding for the Maleny pool, funding for the Beerwah Bulldogs facilities, a secure lease for the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre, upgrades to schools, funding to maintain the CCTV cameras in Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House... not to mention the railway duplication.

Time will tell whether the re-elected local members will have the capacity to make them achievable... the voters may not be so forgiving next time.

Beerwah and Glass House Mountains will receive substantially improved mobile telephone coverage following the announcement of Federal funding for two new mobile towers in those locations.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace announced the funding at an event at Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed last week.

Mr Wallace said: “This is great news for these two local communities. Many people have complained to my office about the lack of mobile phone reception in parts of the Hinterland. I’m very pleased to announce that both of these towns are now going to be the beneficiaries of Federal support.”

The funding is being allocated under Round 3 of the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program, and roll out of the towers is scheduled to begin in 2018.

“The tenders will be in by the end of December, and a decision will be made on exactly where the towers will be built and which company will build them in the early part of 2018,” Mr Wallace said.

President of Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce Ursula Starkovsky, who has campaigned extensively for improved mobile phone coverage, said: “We at the Chamber have been working for a better result for residents and businesses in the area for a long time.

Good mobile reception is a must and up until now Australia has been lagging behind the rest of the world. Thank you, Andrew, for taking this up and helping us to improve this local service.”

Work continues for Friends of the Forest

Friends of the Forest (formerly Steve Irwin Way Forest Group) would like to thank all the supporters of the Save Your Steve Irwin Way Forest campaign, for their encouragement and involvement which been invaluable in securing the 744ha addition to the Mooloolah River National Park – Meridan section.

Road works are still in progress by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), and The Friends of the Forest group have a meeting scheduled for December 4 with project team for the Bruce Highway – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway.

The group’s spokesperson Carolita Fuentes said they are keen to get an update on the design that will be used for fauna fencing, structures and koala crossings as well as an update on the Jowarra Park rest area, which is owned by DTMR.

“We would like to see the area tidied up, with designated seating and an informative memorial installed in honour of the old trees felled to make way for the new road interchange,” Carolita said.

“We envision the structures and seating being made from the remains of the old Guardian (Blackbutt) trees which used to be at the entrance to the forest.”

Queensland Parks and Wildlife are currently in a planning process to design low-key, nature-based recreational opportunities for visitors in the future, which will protect the forest from any further damage by installing regulatory and orientation signage.

“We would also like to see a more suitable toilet installed for the many visitors who use this spot on their way to and from the Sunshine Coast,” Carolita said, “Our group will be continuing to be a voice for the forest and encourage members of the community to be vigilant in their localities and to speak up in defence of natural spaces.

“We are also aware of a number of new urban developments proposed for the area which isn’t good news for our flora and fauna.

“Many local residents are not fully aware of these proposals and it is important that developers be kept accountable by those who will be affected.

Friends of the Forest members with QPWS Rangers and Narelle McCarthy (SCEC) “This is a matter of urgency since the National Park will be locked in like an island without connectivity to other green areas if current plans go ahead without these considerations.

“This would lead to inbreeding of fauna with serious problems for their future survival; it would spell the death of some species.”

Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) has been working hard to educate and inform about the need to protect and enhance our green areas, and the Friends of the Forest would encourage the community to engage with SCEC. “The time to act is now as the present loss of habitat is at a critical level,” Carolita said. “If you would like to get involved in working with us to maintain the wildlife corridors in our region please make contact via our Facebook group.” See www. facebook.com/groups/1367048740076940/.

Fast 5 netball is coming to Glass House A new, faster and shorter version of traditional netball has been created, ‘Fast 5’. Think shorter quarters with rolling substitutions; five playersa-side; shoot for one, two or three points, and Power Plays to double your score.

Tibro’s Netball Club at Glass House will be running its very own four week social ‘Fast 5’ competition over December and January, and would love to see Tibro Club members as well as other locals who are keen to give the new sport a go.

The games will run for 29 minutes, over four, six minute quarters and there is no limit to the number or timing of player substitutions.

The competition is open to either women’s or mixed teams. Mixed teams must have a minimum of two and a maximum of three males on the court at any time. Teams of between five and 10 players can be registered (with no limit to player substitutions) and players must be 14 years or older.

The court remains the same, however an additional semi-circle is marked halfway between the goal post and the existing goal circle.

The area inside this extra semi-circle is called the ‘Inner Circle’, and the area between this semi-circle and the existing goal circle is the ‘Outer Circle’.

Shots made from within the Inner Circle are worth one point. Shots made between the Inner Circle and Outer Circle are worth two points.

For maximum points, you’ll score three points when the shot is made from outside the goal circle! Your team also gets to nominate a ‘Power

Play’ quarter before the game, where all points scored are doubled.

The Tibro’s upcoming competition will be played on Tuesday night, with games played at either 6.30pm or 7.30pm on December 12 and 19 and January 9 and 16.

Teams are welcome to register, or you can register as a single player and be placed in a team.

Fees are $50 per team per game and if you are a registered Tibro’s player, there is no registration fee. Players from other clubs or new players will need to pay a $20 registration fee per player.

In fact wherever you are in the world during these 16 Days of Activism you would see Zontians in orange T-shirts doing something eye-catching to focus attention on the worldwide pandemic of violence against women and children – and they will all be wearing orange T-shirts that state “Zonta says NO”. And they will be asking if you, too, would like to tie a ribbon on a cow.

Zonta’s International President Sonja Honig Schough says: “Violence against women crosses every social and economic class, every religion, race and ethnicity. At least one in every three women worldwide has experienced violence during their lifetime. We in Zonta International cannot accept this.”

Community News Missing children update

Sunshine Coast detectives will seek the extradition of a woman from New South Wales after she allegedly took two children from an address in Beerwah on November 21.

Police will allege the two adult occupants of the house, a 31-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, were threatened by the group before the woman was struck on the head with a metal pole, sustaining a laceration to her head that required hospital treatment.

Two children, a three-year-old girl and her one-yearold brother were removed from the house, with the group then leaving with the children.

The woman and two children were located safe and well in Moree last week, and detectives will travel to New South Wales to seek the woman’s extradition.

Not for profit organisation RangeCare were welldeserving finalists at the recent Queensland Community Achievement Awards held at Royal on the Park, Brisbane on Saturday November 18.

The Flaxton based organisation was recognised as a finalist in the Prime Super Employer ‘Excellence in Aged Care Award’.

Traineeship a great opportunity

Georgie-Leigh Snow from Glasshouse Christian College was one of 39 local high school students who graduated recently from the Caboolture Hospital Health Care Academy and School-Based Traineeship programs.

Georgie-Leigh undertook her traineeship at Caboolture Hospital and graduated with a Certificate 3 Health Services Assistant (Nursing).

She was the regional winner (Metropolitan) in the Queensland Training Awards’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year award, where she was also a finalist in the state awards.

The traineeship was provided through the Australian Training Company.

Georgie-Leigh said: “This traineeship has set me on the right path and has opened so many doors.

Fishers raise funds for Wishlist

Club Glass House Manager Sharon Bochow recently handed over a cheque to the Wishlist foundation for $8,761, raised at the 2016 and 2017 Annual Charity Fishing Competition run each August, and sponsored by many of our local businesses.

Sharon said: “We are fortunate to live in such a generous community.”

Glass House State School teachers honoured

Glasshouse Country Rotary last week presented the teaching staff at Glass House Mountains State School with a Pride of Workmanship award.

“This was a well deserved accolade,” said Rotary President Rod Jones.

“The teaching staff are so well regarded by the school community and the community as well as a whole.

“This gesture of our appreciation is to express that wider community gratitude.”

School Principal Peter Lloyd accepted the award on behalf of the teaching body of the school.

The Rotary Pride of Workmanship award is an initiative aimed at recognising those in local communities who are outstanding in their vocational field.

Mooloolah Valley Christmas Party The community Christmas Party will be held at the Mooloolah Community Centre from 5pm-10pm this Friday December 1. Come along to 43 Bray Road, Mooloolah and celebrate the festive season with other local families.

Twilight Christmas Market Beerwah CWA is proud to present their Twilight Christmas Tower Green Artisan Markets, bringing you everything handmade, hand baked and hand grown from your local community. Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Party Come along on Friday December 8 and enjoy heaps of fun rides for kids of all ages, free face painting, amazing musical entertainment in the Community Centre Hall, dancing in the streets with ‘Unusual Suspects’, demonstrations and performances by local groups. Christmas Concert in Maleny Elimbah Uniting Church Carols The church will hold their annual carol night on Saturday December 2 from 5pm. Christmas News Glass House Mountains Christmas Party The first ever Glass House Mountains Christmas Party hosted by the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will be held on Friday December 8!

Christmas spirit will fill the air from 5pm-7.30pm in Uniting Park, Ryan Street (opposite the post office). There will be a visit from Santa, treats and festive tunes. Bring your friends, family, neighbours, or just yourself to meet other locals. Everyone is welcome. Entry is free, and barbeque food will be available at $4 per plate, $2 for a snag on bread, and $1 for drinks.

Christmas Food Truck Fiesta

This year the event will be held at Turner Park, Beerwah on Saturday December 16. Come along and celebrate Christmas with the community and enjoy a traditional Carols by Candlelight event.

This wonderful family friendly evening features great kids’ activities, community dance groups, pre-show entertainment from 4.30pm and a night filled with local artists and a choir performing your favourite Christmas singa-long carols. Carols start at 6.30pm followed by fireworks at 8.15pm.

There will be plenty of food and fun at the Christmas Food Truck Fiesta at the Caboolture Hub Town Square on Friday December 8 from 5pm-9pm.

The final meeting of the Caloundra Family History Research for 2017 had a Remembrance Day theme which concentrated on the medals likely to feature in family research.

Sometimes referred to disparagingly as “those little bits of tin” with their “little scraps of ribbon”, they can have great historical and emotional significance to those who wear them and to family and friends.

CFHR member Ian Ewardson gave a very enlightening presentation on this topic.

There has been recognition for bravery and loyalty since the caveman. The Egyptians recognised outstanding bravery with plaques of brass and copper, while the Norman followers of William the Conqueror were given whole sections of England.

The first British medals were struck by Elizabeth 1 in 1588 after the defeat of the Spanish Armada. In 1975, the Australian Gallantry and Service Medals, such as the Cross of Gallantry, were introduced. However, the VC and George Cross remain at the top of the list of Australian gallantry awards.

At any Dawn Service, whether at a country memorial or a grand cenotaph, it’s the gentle tinkling of medals that represents generations of service and duty, bravery and mateship, loss and survival.

Inspired by suggestions from the kids, centre co-ordinator Ange Hardey and the team have put a lot of thought into creating a school holiday program that offers an engaging mix of excitement, creativity, relaxation and excursion fun. Some of the creative activities planned include making marbled wrapping paper, making homemade Christmas gifts for home including bath salts and bath bombs, creating felt Christmas ornaments and tie-dying. In the New Year there will be a “messy play day”, Italian cooking day and talent quest, obstacle course water fun day and a healthy food science experiment day. Some fun excursions are on the program including a visit to the Caboolture Historical Village, a trip to the iconic Big Pineapple and Wildlife HQ, a visit to Caboolture Region Environmental Education Centre, bowling and mini golf and more! The popular Sunny Kids Writing Camps will run over four days these holidays (December 14 and 19, January 10 and 17).

Facilitated by one of Australia’s best known children’s authors, Aleesah Darlison, these fun, full day writing workshops will let kids’ imagination flow and are suitable for ages 7-14 years ($55 per day + eventbrite booking fee).

Artist and author Elaine Ouston will be holding ‘Choose your own adventure – writing and illustrating a picture book’ workshops suitable for ages 7-15 years (December 13 and 18, January 12 and 18). Boredom Busters Glasshouse Mountains Riding School

If you have a child who loves horses, is an experienced rider or would just like to try horse riding for the first time, then have a look at what Glasshouse Mountains Riding School can offer over the coming school holidays. Offering personal and professional instruction that caters for all ages and ability levels, the riding school will be offering workshops, sporting and jumping clinics, as well as trail ride activities through the beautiful Glass House Mountains.

Santa wants your letters early!

The busiest night of the year is fast approaching for Santa and his little helpers, and Australia Post is urging children to post their letters to Santa early to ensure the jolly man in red has plenty of time to reply.

Santa will soon be gearing up his sleigh and coming to town, but not before he has replied to tens of thousands of Santa Mail letters from children across Australia.

And for the first time, children can track the progress of their letters online via the Australia Post interactive Santa Mail tracker.

Michelle Skehan, Australia Post Head of Media, said Santa received over 130,000 letters and wish lists from young Australians last year.

“Christmas is a very special time of year at Australia Post, and it’s also our busiest as we send thousands of letters to the North Pole. We always encourage children to write and send their letters early to ensure they receive a reply from Santa before Christmas Day. “It’s a fun approach to letter writing at home or the classroom, but if you get stuck, Australia Post has some helpful letter writing tips and templates on our website,” said Ms Skehan.

To ensure Santa and his little helpers receive your letter, send your letters and wish lists to Santa, North Pole, 9999 with a 65c Christmas stamp on the front of the envelope.

Don’t forget to write your name and return address on the back of the envelope so Santa knows where to send his reply.

Santa Mail letters can be placed in either a dedicated Santa Mail box found at most Post Offices or any red street post box. Children can pick up free Christmas postcards and write to Santa on the spot at selected Post Offices.

Students hit the beach

This term Mooloolah State School students from both Year 5 and 6 have taken to the beach for essential surf skills as part of the school curriculum in conjunction with Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club.

Each week the students can’t wait to get to the beach to participate in the program.

The program teaches valuable skills about surf lifesaving and the beach.

They do basic drills and games such as flag runs, board rides and swimming. They learn how to read the waves and look for rips and learn how the tides and swells work.

The confidence they learn around surf and beaches is invaluable for their learning and survival around water activities.

The students try new things and, who knows, maybe they will join a local surf club, participate in Nippers, or there could even be a future iron man or woman amongst them?

Back to school Once again Beerwah News will be filling the 2018 book lists for Beerwah State School.

This has been an ongoing partnership for many years and one that has proven beneficial to both parties.

Parents simply drop their child’s booklist at either the school or the Newsagency. The packs are then available for collection from the Newsagency at a date nominated by the parent. No payment is required until collection and the newsagency even offers a lay-by facility. At this busy and expensive time of year this proves most helpful for families.

For a number of years now the Newsagency has been assisting the school by donating a percentage of total bookpack sales to them.

Over the past six years this has equated to just in excess of $16,000. This demonstrates the importance of developing a relationship with local businesses which proves beneficial to all.

This is the time of year when thousands of young people leave school to go into the workforce or to look for employment. These days, machines are starting to do many of the mainstream jobs. I understand there are computer programs available listing all the different sorts of employment and assessing one’s suitability for any job that takes one’s interest, all done without having to meet with or speak to a person.

I watched the game between Australia and Samoa but something seemed wrong right from the start.

For a while I couldn’t work out what it was but then it clicked. The Aussie commentators were mispronouncing the Samoan national name.

They were calling it Sar-mo-an, which when rounded out becomes Sarmoan. Now I would have thought that commentators involved in a World Cup would at the very least be expected to know how to correctly pronounce a participant country’s name correctly.

Obviously not the case – Sam-oan would be correct, I believe.

By half time I was irritated by their continuous errors – half way through the second half I’d had enough of their blundering, switched off the TV and went to bed thoroughly disgusted.

Traditionally the Samoans are recognised as a nation of gentle giants, but this must have been an affront to them. I think an apology would be appropriate as I don’t think a confrontation with one of these gentle giants would be a very pleasant experience.

What a delight

When visiting friends in Beerwah recently we called in for a bite to eat and a coffee at a place called the ‘Kwerky Cafe’. What a delight it turned out to be. Lovely ‘kwerky’ décor, really yummy food at good prices and the couple who run it are the most friendly and interesting people you could meet. Well 18

Do people have nine lives?

During my short commute to work in Beerwah the other day I happened to see some of the driving habits of a few people from our community.

I was cruising along and it all kind of unfolded in front of me as if I was watching one of those “20 Worst Drivers” clips on YouTube – but this time unfortunately it was real. One driver pulled out in front of a huge cement mixer truck, not once, but twice. I honestly couldn’t believe it. I could only imagine what the truck driver thought about it. Then, as I turned onto the overpass heading into Beerwah I saw two cars completely ignore the lane markings of the round-about and charge on straight across both lanes when there were a lot of cars around them.

The thing that made this even more concerning to me was that it was raining and the road was wet.

As I pulled into my work carpark I was shaking my head, feeling so thankful that I had not been caught up in the middle of that driving chaos.

We all have heard this message before, but can we all please be extra careful on the roads? All it takes is one careless manoeuvre and somebody’s life can be changed forever. Everyone is busy, but that is no excuse. When we drive, we are not just having a responsibility to keep ourselves safe, but also our passengers and people in cars around us.

I have met many people who have had loved ones die in road accidents and their pain never leaves.

People don’t have nine lives, only one… So, come on Glasshouse Country, can we be known as a region where people drive competently and courteously? I think that would be pretty cool.

Children are suffering

As the festive season rapidly approaches and families across Australia make plans to get together, hundreds of thousands of families camping out in Bangladesh are not so fortunate.

In Bangladesh, the world’s fastest growing humanitarian emergency shows no sign of easing, as more than 618,000 Rohingya people are now in an impossibly difficult situation.

Plan International is there to help. Our aid workers are working hard to make life in these appalling makeshift camps safer for babies, children and

women, who are particularly vulnerable.

It’s estimated more than 60% of the Rohingya who are now living in makeshift camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, are women and children. Ensuring their safety in a precarious environment is a huge responsibility. Thanks to generous donations, we have now been able to reach almost 60,000 people living in the camp with aid.

Plan International has already constructed 400 toilets and has distributed thousands of hygiene kits to families living in the worst conditions imaginable.

We aim to construct 1,000 latrines and 200 bathing spaces over the next year.

Work to reunite children with their families is urgently required and Plan International stands ready to support this effort and to set up childfriendly spaces. We must ensure children living in these appalling conditions have the chance to play and just be kids. For these people, the future is bleak. But we can all do something right now to help keep them safe and to reunite families.

You can support any of the wonderful Australian charities on the ground in Bangladesh, who have joined forces for a special joint appeal via the ABC. And that’s something to truly feel good about this Christmas.

Re: Lost credibility

In reference to Ray Clogstoun’s recent letter (GC&M News, November 1) concerning the loss of credibility of the Sunshine Coast Council and the impact of their Dwelling House Code on the resident: It is fair to say they had no credibility in the first place due to the following.

1. The existing Sunshine Coast resident is totally excluded from the process; 2. Prior development notice is not required to be given to a resident; 3. Building site decisions which impact the existing resident’s amenity are at the sole discretion of the neighbour; and 4. Information concerning the development is withheld and not available unless applied for and it takes months to receive and a fee is levied.

The Sunshine Coast Council’s Dwelling House Code has the smallest building-to-boundary setbacks of any of the surrounding councils, meaning your neighbour can erect a two-storey building virtually on the boundary anywhere on their block and are not required to make any provisions to protect the existing resident’s amenity and privacy.

Other more progressive councils have regulation requirements in place to minimise any impact on residents.

Council ignores the residents' right to a fair go and they are treated as if they and their amenity and privacy does not exist. Council has not allocated responsibility, collects no data, nor has reporting systems to monitor outcomes and their impact on the resident.

Expect no support from the Mayor who believes the recent Council staff statement that the loss of amenity and privacy described by Ray Clogstoun is not a widespread or recurring issue. If this were true, why are more and more residents coming forward with stories of lost amenity, privacy and lifestyle?

As Council have abdicated their responsibility and duty of care to ensure that all ratepayers are treated equally, it is time for an independent review of the Council’s Dwelling House Code, its administration and its impact on existing residents.

Stress, being busy, and having many things to worry about seem to be a part of our modern lives. We take on so much and are committed to many different roles.

This can lead to a varied and full life, but it can also lead to excessive stress.

It is no secret that continued excessive stress can lead to physical and mental health issues and can make life quite uncomfortable.

There are many ways we can manage stress and the key to stress management is self-care.

It is important to not put ourselves under constant pressure.

Getting good sleep is also the key to feeling energised and refreshed, as well as a healthy balanced diet and plenty of physical activity.

Relaxation, having fun, and spending quality time with people you love is also something that should be prioritised.

It is also worthwhile to look at the issues that are causing you to feel stressed and work out a better way to manage the situation and solve the problem.

If you feel that stress is taking over your life and you are not managing it in a helpful way then you can reach out for help.

Re: Disgust at flying fox slaughter

Your article on page 3 (GC&M News, November 22) regarding the slaughter of a bat colony in Conondale brings home the absolute disdain that some people have in treating other creatures and is part of bigger issue of how humans treat the rest of the Earth.

Human impacts are significantly destroying the insect populations of the world, with research in the UK and in Germany indicating that insect populations have declined by three-quarters since 1989.

The new data was gathered across Germany but has implications for all landscapes dominated by agriculture, and has been described as "ecological Armageddon".

Hans de Kroon, at Netherlands' Radboud University who led the new research, said the number of flying insects decreasing at such a high rate in such a large area is an alarming discovery.

Prof Dave Goulson of Sussex University, UK said: “Insects make up about two-thirds of all life on Earth and there has been some kind of horrific decline.

We appear to be making vast tracts of land inhospitable to most forms of life, and are currently on course for ecological collapse. If we lose the insects then everything else is going to crash."

A recent UK writer said: "Within commercial models, individuals of other species are not only neglected - their very existence is denied. They are instead relegated to the realm of property, only to be considered or 'conserved' when their bodies are seen as necessary for the health of a system of monetary value."

What political party acknowledged this in the elections? None! We seriously need a return to small scale locally based farming with organic and natural methods based on local regions.

Anything else now seems likely to poison and topple our human race.

No more big head signs please

With the election over now and the result not known yet (as of the time of writing this letter), one would hope that whoever wins the seat of Glass House... be that Andrew Powell from the LNP or Brent Hampstead from the ALP, that they will have a little more respect for our area and refrain from erecting massive signs of their big heads.

Those that Andrew has had scattered across the countryside – which he has claimed in the past as being suitable and appropriate as they are on private lands and are “informational” – have been an eyesore and a blight on our scenic drives.

What sort of message are we sending tourists and visitors when they drive our country roads, when all they see are big signs with a politician's head on them?

Would they think that we’re so simple that we need reminding every day... and multiple times wherever we drive... of who the local member is?

Maybe we wouldn’t have such drastic short term memory loss if the local members would achieve something... like their colleagues down Gold Coast way seem to be able to do with relative ease.

Maybe now Andrew or Brent (whoever is crowned the winner) will have some consideration for locals and abstain from grandiose “look at me” selfaffirmations.

Things2Do The Radiators to rock Caloundra

One of the great Australian rock 'n' roll survival stories is that of the band The Radiators, who in 2013 celebrated 35 years together. Then came the departure of the group’s beloved Fes, the first change in the line-up since 1978, and The Radiators welcomed Sydney guitar slinger and long-time friend Brent Dehn to the band.

Downtown Caloundra is about to light up in true Christmas spirit for the annual family-friendly Festival of Lights with Sunshine Coast Councillor Tim Dwyer flicking the switch on this Thursday, November 30, at 6pm.

There will be exciting street entertainment that includes illuminated stilt walkers, a harpist and a ballerina covered in lights, late night shopping, the unveiling of Christmas window displays by local businesses and the switching on of the festive lights in the trees in Bulcock Street. Santa will be welcomed to his Caloundra workshop by a convoy of classic cars and bikes on December 2 from 10am, with his workshop opening at The Strand (Big Screen Cinemas Centre) at 11 Bulcock Street for free photos with Santa from 11am.

Call of the Wild exhibition

From now until December 16, Solitude Art Gallery is hosting the latest solo exhibition of ‘artist in residence’ Darren Trebilco, entitled ‘Call of the Wild’.

Bursting with the artist’s trademark bright colours and bold lines, the exhibition is a collection of artworks inspired by his strong connection with the animal world.

Festival of Small Halls summer tour comes to Eudlo

Sweet problem

What do you do when thousands of bees invade your home? Call your local ‘Bee Busters’ of course!

Last week Maleny apiarists, Hinterland Bees, were called to a Sunshine Coast home where their walls were buzzing, to rescue a massive swarm of around 40,000 bees.

When residents Tracey and Derek first saw insects entering a gap in the brickwork of their David Low Way home they thought wasps were building a nest.

Little did they know a colony of honey bees had decided to set up residence inside their walls.

An inspection from Hinterland Bees using a thermal imaging camera revealed that the beehive filled out at least two stud spaces with as much as 60kg of honeycomb and tens of thousands of bees.

Scott Whitaker from Hinterland Bees said that at this time of the year they are getting plenty of calls about bee swarms and those swarms are looking for new homes, usually in the cavities of buildings and trees.

“Once they move in, they don’t take long to explode in numbers and fill out these spaces with their brood nest and honey stores,” explained Scott.

“While honey bees aren’t naturally aggressive, they can be defensive of their home and can sting anyone or anything they perceive as a threat, including humans and our pets.

“The longer a colony occupies a space, the bigger the hive becomes. Once the colony reaches a certain size it will eventually swarm again, with the old queen leaving with half the population of bees.

“It’s not uncommon for this new swarm to move into another wall or ceiling cavity of the same building, doubling the problem for the home owner.”

matters into their own hands by poisoning.

“Poisoning is rarely successful, with surviving bees becoming very aggressive, not to mention the fact that it doesn’t deal with the bigger problem of what is left behind: up to 100kg of honey which will attract vermin and the comb will slowly degrade leaking huge quantities of honey inside the wall or ceiling cavity,” Scott said.

He said the colony will be removed through a process called a ‘cut-out’, which sees the plasterboard wall cut open and the bees removed using a special vacuum. The honey comb and brood will be placed into a standard bee hive before being moved to one of Hinterland Bees’ apiary sites near Maleny.

All things going to plan, the end result will be some beautiful honey on the shelves of the Maleny IGA. “It’s a time consuming job with the a few stings along the way, but well worth it when you are saving the bees,” said Scott.

“And the homeowner ends up with some honey straight out of their own wall!”

Hidden gem at Flaxton

Hidden away down the end of a cul-de-sac in Flaxton, Marcia and Peter Jensen thought their life was almost idyllic, living on one acre of fertile soil, gardening and pottering about their rural residential block.

Then they agreed to open up their garden as part of the 2017 Gardening on the Edge event, organised by the Maleny Garden Club.

Suddenly, they had to make sure that their garden was ready for hundreds of visitors, walking about, poking at things, sniffing at flowers, asking questions, and probably sneakily taking away a few 'samples' as well.

Will the camellias be flowering, do the beds need remulching, is the grass green enough, will the chooks behave, where will the buses park, will there be enough for people to look at, what if it rains, what if it snows (that’s just going a little too far ... it was June, but really, Peter – snow!)

But over the months before, Marcia and Peter worked everything out, and for that one weekend in June, their property on the Flaxton hillside shone.

Their garden is a good typical example of what can be achieved on a slightly larger residential block – but one which is fairly common for this part of the world.

In one way, the slope of the block gives an opportunity to create a range of levels and areas, which the Jensens have used to their advantage.

With the house set back from the street, they had the opportunity to create ornamental gardens feeding left and right off the main driveway.

Luckily for them, the neighbouring property includes a substantial lake. This has given them the perfect backdrop and Peter and Marcia used the opportunity well to ‘borrow’ the landscape from their neighbours.

By doing this, they’ve enhanced the outlook from their garden and property and created the illusion of a larger space, without having to invest in creating and maintaining something substantial.

This is a clever approach and something gardeners should consider – instead of screening a neighbour, maybe borrow the vista as your own.

Their structured gardens are laid out in an unstructured way, with paths meandering between. They’ve used established trees as the frame and filled the spaces beneath with a range of perennials.

As any gardener would know, if you have something which looks spectacular or unsusual, everyone who comes will most likely ask “what’s that called?”

Name tagging plants is an easy way to negate

the need to remember the tricky names of things ... and it’s so easy to forget over time just what variety that pink rose is.

As productive gardens go, Peter and Marcia have it pretty well sorted. Luckily their volcanic soil means that fertility isn’t an issue, but it still needs organic matter to maintain a healthy soil ecology.

An older garden shed has cleverly been converted into a chook house, complete with choko vine.

Having the chicken pen directly adjacent to the vegetable gardens makes it easy to dispose of the garden waste without having to cart the material too far.

Fencing the chook run is also a smart approach, as it’s important to protect your feathered friends from predators and other wandering animals.

The idea of free ranging birds in smaller blocks sounds holistic, but in many cases ends up with the chickens suffering serious injury or death.

Peter’s next stage is a native garden at the rear of the block. As many native plants have different soil, water and nutrient requirements from standard garden plants, it’s a good idea to create separate beds for your prize native plant collection.

Overall, Marcia and Peter have achieved a well balanced, relatively easy care garden, which ticks all their boxes and, as was obvious on the open day, ticks a lot of other people’s too.

Jobs for the yard in December

• If you haven’t done it yet, prune your azaleas to keep them nice and compact, and give them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them with Confidor or Multiguard to protect the leaves from the dreaded azalea lacebug.

• The wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veggies overnight. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Dipel) every couple of days. Remember that water washes off any sprays – so repeat after rain or watering.

• Tunnelling ants are active and can cause headaches in pot plants.

Drown them by watering with soapy water, maybe with a few drops of a garden insecticide.

• Paw paw trees which have grown too tall cut be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can.

• Prune back your grevilleas by a third and feed them with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates being burnt back in a bushfire, and stimulates them to grow more branches – more branches means more flowers.

• Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the mornings or the afternoons, so that you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too – keeping well hydrated is just as important.

• Tidy up the garden for Santa – he doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden.

Vegetables Plant tomato, capsicum, snake bean, okra, eggplant, sweet corn, lettuce (leafy varieties), radish, sweet potato, cucumber, zucchini, choko, pumpkin, rockmelon, watermelon and rosella.

Flowers Plant cosmos, marigold, salvia, zinnia, begonia, celosia, gomphrena, sunflower, torenia, ageratum, aster, impatiens and coleus.

Black She-oak Allocasuarina littoralis Black She-oak is an erect conical shaped tree which has dark fissured bark which looks black at certain times of the year. This fast growing tree is a dioecious plant... this means it has separate male and female trees. The male tree bears showy red flowers in spring and the female plant has clusters of small fruiting cones which hold the winged seeds. This species can attain up to 12 metres in height on favourable sites and grows on a wide range of sites, but is most common on well-drained soils on hills and mountain slopes, and prefers full sun to light shade. Black She-oaks produce excellent timber for a wide variety of uses including woodturning and even burning, as they produce very little waste. In the past, its wood has been used for tool handles, yokes, furniture, farm buildings and roof shingles.

They make an excellent wind break and the wind sounds wonderful as it sighs through their branches and needles. Allocasuarina littoralis are one of the favourite food trees for the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo. Most properties would benefit from planting a couple of these hardy charismatic trees.

How does our garden grow at Peachester? Dual living, large family home or B&B? Contributed by Sally Joyce No garden can grow well without regular watering! The last warm dry winter was a test for volunteers assisting with the Peachester State School Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Lots of helpers kept our garden growing.

Now, with many thanks to the Coochin Creek Fruit Growers Co-operative, our garden will be a lot easier to water.

On Monday our school presented Co-op Manager Steve Williams with a certificate of appreciation for their very generous donation of an irrigation system that will allow our garden to be watered regularly with the turn of the tap.

Peter Mundy from Queensland Water Services has committed a donation of labour to install the irrigation system, which will be up and going before the summer school holidays.

Earlier in the year Katya Spierling donated 10 winter bearing blueberry trees that are going to love their new drip watering system.

The children are eagerly awaiting their crops of popcorn, rockmelons and watermelons to mature and will soon be putting in cover crops for the summer holidays.

Supply and demand

Over the last couple of months we’ve talked extensively about the selling and buying process, tips on how to enhance your property value, ways to maintain and protect your property, and values in the local area.

On our run-up to Christmas, I just quickly want to touch on ‘Supply and Demand’.

In essence, what we are talking about is clearance rates in our local area. Being the local area specialist, I have done extensive research of the market and market trends over the last two years.

Today I will be looking at the amount of properties that have come on the market between Glasshouse and the Mooloolaba Valley area between October 15 and the November 23.

Over this timeframe, we have had 47 properties enter into the market space, and 21 of those properties have left the market space. This has put the clearance rate

of properties in the local area under 50%.

Why is this so? What is common at this time of year, especially from the ‘Spring Selling Season’ campaign into the transition of the ‘Summer Selling Season’ campaign, is that through Spring we typically see a 68% clearance rate of properties on the market. So the supply and demand is working together well in unison.

As the market runs hot and property prices rise (in Spring) it is assumed that these prices will continue to rise (this can also be attributed to an increase in seller expectation because the market has been running HOT!). This in some cases encourages agents to look at listing properties at higher values, which can see newly listed properties sit on the market for longer than average periods.

As the buyer market tries to adjust to the new increase

in prices, this can, in turn, see a slight slowdown in clearance rates over the Christmas period.

Advice Look at properties that have sold (great tool to use is the sold section on realestate.com.au) in your local area in the price range you wish to sell in, and compare your property to those that have sold.

Try not to look at anomalies in the market space; those are normally properties that have sold for what seems an incredible price as these can sometimes disrupt the market. Look at five or six properties, add those properties together, and then divide that figure by the number of properties added to give you a median price.

Hint! Try and use properties that are very similar to your own in regards to bedrooms, bathrooms, land size pool, air-conditioning and sheds to get an accurate approximation.

What is Christmas all about?

This year the Maleny Presbyterian Church is looking to answer the question of “What is Christmas is all about?”

Maleny Presbyterian Church’s Rev C Scott Kroeger said: “During December at our Sunday morning services from 9am we will examine the well-intentioned practices of our culture today as well as what The Bible says about Christmas.”

He said the themes for discussion would be: December 3 – ‘Christmas is all about feasting’, December 10 – ‘Christmas is all about being with family’, December 17 – ‘Christmas is all about giving gifts’ and December 24 – ‘Christmas is all about getting gifts’. Also on Christmas Eve there will be the singing of carols from 6pm.

“All these things are what Christmas is about,” Rev Kroeger said. “Come join us and celebrate the season with us. You and your family are most welcome to join us at these services at 14 Cedar Street, Maleny.”

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese Once again the rain has affected our golf.

It's quite unseasonal for November but cool temperatures are very enjoyable. Due to the rain we had no ladies competition on Saturday, although a couple of brave souls played in the Medley Stableford.

Thursday November 23: We ended up with only 31 players. Prior to the rain there were 72 on the time sheet, so quite disappointing, but understandable due to the conditions.

We played a Stableford and the winner was Hope Hannah with 32 points on a countback from Jackie Collinson, on a count back from three others. NTPs - 2 and 5 Cathy Stone, 16 - Sue Williamson, 2nd shot 18 Karen Gannon.

BRD went to 29 pts. Hope to see many more ladies on the fairways and good golfing.

Beerwah Golf Club Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Men's and medley results Heavy rain caused the cancellation of Wednesday's competition, the TotalSpan Garages Blue Marker Challenge. A few players stormed through the tempest, but the majority faced one or more unplayable greens. The pro shop siren brought an end to their woes.

Fortunately the course and weather dried out by Saturday for round one of the weekend's Beerwah Cup, a nett stroke two-day event. The sunny conditions were much appreciated by Saturday's 154 starters and 22 finished on nett par or better.

John Merritt (hcp 10) was the star of day one with a great 64. He was pressured by Tony Richards (19) on 65 and the two 67s of Brendan Griffiths (1) from Nudgee and local boy Paul Du Vergier (31). The fine weather held on for day two, Sunday, and John maintained the rage with a strong follow up round, 69, to earn him a winning 133 total. Paul Handley (15), who shot 70 on Saturday, completed the event with a wonderful 65. That gave him a 135 total and second prize money.

The Beerwah Cup is one of the Club's oldest events and, as the 2017 winner, John Merritt will join a stellar list of golfers. Congratulations.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Jim King The weather certainly got the better of us last week with a saturated rink and Tuesday members’ bowls and Wednesday nights barefoot social bowls both washed out. Fine weather returned, temporarily, on Friday and we had a big turnout of bowlers with six full rinks for scroungers. Winners were Scott Alexander, Kay Gesch, Ian Chatterton, John Long (recently returned from the UK), Brett Gillis and Gary Darcy. Thanks to Joe Walters who took on the task of games director for the afternoon. The money board was won by Ray Pantlin.

The club received the official letter last week from Sunshine Coast Council advising that we have been successful with our grant application.

We have received $8,000 towards the cost of the refurbishment of the bar area. We hope this project will now be undertaken early next year.

This week we hope for fine weather on Wednesday night for our barefoot bowls – 6pm for a 6.30 start. Visitors are welcome, just come along and introduce yourself – it's $13 for burger and game, bowls and instruction included. There will not be any scroungers or members’ draw on Friday as we have our presentation night commencing at 6pm – Presentation, Paella and Pie. There are still a few places available. Cost is $30. After the meeting, most people adjourned to a very pleasant Christmas party at The Orangery.

The lawns were renovated last Wednesday and the rain worked well on that day to water the sand in. Thank you to the workers who managed to stick to their task through the heavy falls.

To allow the grounds to recover they will be unavailable for play for the next couple of

weeks. To ease the pain of this inconvenience, players are advised to take advantage of the club library to plan new strategies for their games in 2018. The 'Oxford Croquet' website is another good source of information or inspiration, whatever it might be that is required to fill the gap.

Club play days are normally Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds.

Thursday November 23: Social, winners of the day were Bob Bloomer and John Annakin with 2 wins + 20 margin, runners-up were Ernie Sherwood and Robi Dean with + 26 in the 2nd game. Lucky draw went to David Wiley and Graham Nicholson. As we are getting more numbers please be aware you may play triples.

Saturday November 25: Mixed fours semifinals saw Don Teirney, Di Garland, Warren Blackbourne and Graham Nicholson def Maz Idle, Sue O’Hagan, Bill Tumbridge and Barry Kirk 21-20 in an absolute thriller.

While Eileen Pierce, Bob Bloomer, Lindsay Henderson and John Annakin defeated Jan Lawson, Rae Farrell, Ernie Sherwood and Robi Dean 22-16. In the mixed fours final Don Teirney, Di Garland, Warren Blackbourne and Graham Nicholson def Eileen Pierce, Bob Bloomer, Lindsay Henderson and John Annakin 28-8 to win our last club competition for 2017. Well done, everyone.

Our Club Presentation lunch is this Saturday, December 2, at 12.45pm at Club Glass House and tickets can be purchased from our office now. Tickets are $20 for members and $30 for non-members, which includes a full buffet lunch. Arrive by noon and come and celebrate what has been a great bowling year and enjoy a nice cold beer with fellow club members.

There will be some live music plus a few raffles.

We had a great turnout on Sunday for the 'Come and Try Day'. Thanks to all the club members who turned up to help and support the morning, it was also great to see a few new faces too.

The final Police Bowls day is this Sunday, December 3, start time will be about 11.30am with a cost of only $7 for the game. Place your name down at the club, we need more bowlers.

Our club Christmas Break-up Party is Wednesday December 13, with fun bowls to be played with plenty of prizes and raffles.

Morning tea, lunch and bowls will cost $20, non-players $16. Please bring a $10 gift for the tree.
