Hi Everyone

F

ollowing on from quite a few rainy days, I imagine all of the event organisers for each of the local Australia Day events were pleased when the sun came out on Sunday morning.

With so much going on for Australia Day last week end, this week’s ‘Out and About’ is a bit of a team effort .

Sarah our ‘super receptionist’ headed to the Show and Shine and Family Fun Day held at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club.

Carrol our sub-editor went off to the Maleny Hotel. She was so intrigued from our write up last week about the Comedian Magician who had been described as amazing and hilarious,

What's Happening that she wanted to check him out for herself.

On Monday morning Brownie and I headed to Maleny Showground for the 2015 Sport Recreation and Service Club Expo. While a little on the sticky side (very humid!) it was great to see the kids and their parents having some fun.

I know Australia Day is about celebrating what we love about our country, but it seems that for most the ‘having a bit of fun’ must be pretty important as well. Between racing dunnys and pigs, chucking thongs, wellingtons and kegs, egg and spoon and sack races … it seems we really don’t need too much modern technology to enjoy the great places where we live.

Election Day Unless you have already pre-polled or postal voted, on January 31 – Election Day – you will need to make your way to a polling booth to cast your vote.

You can vote at any polling booth in Queensland – you don’t have to stay within your electorate.

So, don’t think you can’t go visiting, surfing or shopping somewhere else. You’ll just need to find a polling booth near where you are and complete an absentee vote. Look for a school or hall, or check the Electoral Commission Queensland website (www.ecq.qld.gov.au).

Don’t forget to take a suitable form of identification with you – such as the letter sent to you by the electoral commission, drivers licence, passport, Commonwealth or State identity card, proof of age card, credit card statement, bank statement, utility statement or rates notice.

Remember you can vote for one person, a couple of people or for all candidates – but you must show your order of preference if you’re voting for more than one (using numbers ...1, 2, 3 etc).

The choice of who you wish to vote for is purely your decision.

At the polling booth, people will be handing out ‘how to vote’ cards. These are merely their suggested voting preferences – no one has to follow what the ‘how to vote’ cards suggest. And don’t feel pressured into taking them if you don’t want them.

Also, those handing them out are just volunteers, supporters and family – so please show them some common courtesy. Don’t be rude to them, blame them, abuse them or harass them. If one of them is discourteous to you, report it to a polling official for them to handle.

You may take the ‘how to vote’ cards into the polling booth to assist your decision making.

Afterwards, it’s always a good idea to hand them back to the people who gave them to you so they can reuse them, or you can leave them in the location marked at the polling booth.

The $90 million water theme park planned for Steve Irwin Way, Glenview is hoped to be a step closer to reality after tomorrow’s (Thursday) Council meeting.

The 24 hectare block opposite the Holcim sand quarry – and where Dan the Mango Man is currently selling from – is currently zoned for rural production.

However, Sunshine Park (QLD) Pty Ltd have applied to have the land rezoned to ‘Tourist Attraction and Resort Complex’ which will allow them to start their long-awaited resort and water park complex – including possibly the world’s largest surfing wave pool.

The report being presented to the Councillors recommends that the rezoning be given Council preliminary approval as the … ‘proposed development has the potential to enhance the Sunshine Coast’s tourism brand and reputation and is consistent with the natural values and key lifestyle attributes of the Sunshine Coast.’

During construction, the project will create around 430 jobs, with approximately 250 new jobs created when it is operational.

The flow-on effect to the Sunshine Coast community is the generation of $11.8 million when operational, with some 440 full-time equivalent positions as a result.

The public consultation phase raised a number of issues – one being the noise generated in relation to the amenity of neighbouring landholders.

The report noted that it is expected the site will generate noise emissions that may impact on adjacent residential land and that further noise assessments as part of subsequent applications will be required.

If the development gets the go ahead from council, it will contribute much needed tourism and accommodation to the mix of local opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Sports Club is reaching out for public help Just before Christmas last year the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club was forced to close down the commercial operations of the club, this includes meal service, bar and function room hire.

Last Thursday night the club’s committee called a public meeting to explain the current financial position of the club and how the club can continue to move forward.

The club’s focus now is to ensure that the players can continue to have access to both the sporting grounds, as well as the facilities (change rooms, grand stand, canteen, and function room etc) for playing competitive netball, touch football, cricket and soccer.

Over the past few months, the committee have been liaising extensively with both State and Local government, who have both been very supportive and have advised solutions on how they can ensure that the allied clubs can continue to have access to the sporting fields.

However neither level of government is able to pay out the debt that the club has over the building, a sum of $160,000.

Club President Ken Fullerton was keen to reassure the group that the relationship with the ANZ bank was a positive one and the bank had shown no intention of calling in the loan. In actual fact they have been working with them to ease the pressure.

Unfortunately the Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough wasn’t able to attend the meeting, however he has also been in close contact with the Club and has offered his support on ensuring the club’s future.

Mr Brough said my children and I have played multiple sports and used the club’s facilities over the years so I know just how important the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club is for the Hinterland community.

“We will work with the committee and the community to save the club” he said.

Both State representative for Glass House Andrew Powell and Councillor Rick Baberowski attended the meeting.

They explained that legally they were not able to take on this debt. In the case of local government this is stated in the Local Government Act. However the club needs to raise the funds as quickly as possible to get the mortgage paid off so that the allied clubs can be guaranteed certainty for their future access to the club’s buildings.

The committee has proposed a ‘Save our Club’ Campaign which is calling on members of the community and local business people to be a ‘Save our Club Hero’ and to donate funds to get the loan paid off.

The campaign will run until February 20 and the club will be working on plans for how to publicly acknowledge these community heroes (they are also happy if people wish to anonymously donate).

Over its long history the club has played an important part of our community, and over the years the club has always been able to ‘pay its way’. However over the past few years, with the economic downturn and the huge reduction in the poker machine revenue, things have changed.

And the committee is keen to spread the word and remind people just what a special place the

club has been to them and their families and how important it is now to ensure its future.

So how about kicking in some dollars, to ensure that the local area continues to be able to create great memories around their sporting days?

Ken Fullerton said how the club will be run in the future will basically be ‘a return to the past’, with it being run by volunteers. A new committee will be formed at the Club’s AGM on Tuesday, February 10 and that group of people will be tasked with taking the club into the future.

If you are a 2014 paid up club member (either social or player) you will be entitled to run for a position on the committee and have voting rights at the AGM. So if you feel that you would like to get involved in being a part of the club’s future then make sure you head along to the meeting.

Lee’s larrikin tales Peachester resident Lee Patterson has had such an outstanding response to his first foray into publishing his larrikin tales of his intriguing and sometimes tough country upbringing that he is now penning his full story.

Lee published ‘The Wheat Wanderers’ in November last year, raising vital funds to help struggling farmers, a cause very close to his heart.

"My first book is about 100 pages long and is a small excerpt of just one chapter of my experiences and stories I have heard along the way," Lee said.

"The book launch raised in excess of $500.00 to go towards Aussie Helpers to help out our troubled farmers, along with two other books launched on the same day, which helped to raise over $1,000.00 for research at the Prince Charles Cardiac Unit."

Lee began writing by enrolling in a U3A (University of the Third Age) course to further his writing skills in his attempt to record his family history for future generations.

"The tutor asked me to pen 300 words on my life experience, having never heard of my style of work before," he said.

"They encouraged me to add to the story, which somehow turned out to be published into book, and ‘The Wheat Wanders’ is chapter three of that bigger picture.”

Lee has many yarns to recall, and stresses the next book will not necessarily be about him or any particular person.

“It’ll be about a lifestyle and all of those that rose above the challenges we encounter along life’s highway,” he said.

Lee was born in Crows Nest on the Darling Downs, attending up to four different schools a year due to his father's work commitments.

"I never really settled down due to an often unhappy home life, I think because of the pressures of a difficult life, so I was often billeted out to aunties and the like, as circumstances demanded," he said.

"My happiest times were spent on an auntie’s farm at Delaneys Creek. Here, along with my cousins, we milked 29 cows each morning and afternoon and seldom made it to school, but it was a life I thoroughly enjoyed," Lee said.

"My uncles cut timber all week up on Stantons Flat. They would come down on Friday, go to the Festival Hall Friday night, and then help with the milking every weekend.

"Playing football on a Saturday afternoon allowed them to let off some steam and then they would go to the Saturday night dance. Then they would go and cut timber all week," Lee recalls.

"They were not alone. These men had served in World War II and were never looked after on their return, and I have always believed this was their way of dealing with the horrors of war they had witnessed."

Lee believes this way of life instilled him with a sense of teamwork and ethic. He said he couldn't wait to finish school and join the ranks of the "working men."

"In those days, there were no government handouts. If you didn't work, you didn't eat.

"So off I went, taking work wherever it could be found: ring barking, yard building, fencing, ringing, droving, well sinking, stone pitching, and a hundred other tasks," he said.

"Friendships were forged that lasted over 50 years and more. A boss I worked for over 50 years ago contacted me and brought back memories of wonderful times and requested I pen something of those days," he said.

"So it is for these people, along with all who helped guide me through my first attempt, and all who supported me by purchasing my first book, that I have started to write what I hope will be the complete story that I can share with everyone."

Tibro's Netball Club has produced some outstanding netballers in its time but rarely in the club's history of national calibre.

Seventeen-year-old Chloe Lovatt's sporting prowess, developed over her eight years with Tibro's, has earned her a coveted spot in the Indoor Netball Tri Nations Series playing for Australia against South Africa and New Zealand in Perth in July.

It will be the first time the Glass House netballer, who now progressed to the Caloundra representative competition, has combined netball codes with indoor netball.

Chloe will also continue to play in the outdoor Mount Franklin Challenge Premier League in Brisbane this year, which has been a weekly commitment for the past three years. However it is her national indoor selection which Chloe says is the pinnacle of her sporting career to date.

"It's awesome. I cannot believe I would ever reach this level of competition," said Chloe, who enters Year 12 at Beerwah High School this year.

"I decided last year was going to be my year and I gave it everything I had.

"I'm undecided as to whether indoor or outdoor is my preference but I know I want to take my netball as far as I can."

Her ambitions don't end there with the teenager wanting to study to be a sport physiotherapist or health and physical education teacher.

days training and two competitive games a week, as well as vital mentoring from Tibro's Netball Club and her mum Bo Robertson who has had a long association with Tibro's.

"Many of the Tibro girls have worked their way through to the Caloundra rep level," Bo said.

"Tibro's is just one of nine clubs in the Caloundra catchment however is one of the largest which is testament to its quality of coaching and support."

Tibro's Netball Club President Dimi Young said the Club was proud of Chloe's achievements and the Club's involvement in the development of her netballing skills from a very young age.

Community News Twinnies could do with a hand By Lea Parkes Regular Glasshouse Country News readers would be aware of the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue operation that is located on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough.

Paula and Bridgette Powers (known as the Twinnies) do an amazing job providing a 24/7 Rescue and Rehabilitation Service for seabirds, water birds and native birds and other Australian native animals.

However while they, along with their mum Helen, are the backbone of the organisation, they rely on the dedication and support of many volunteers to be able to achieve what they do.

Recently Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski visited the facility. He said that we are fortunate the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue service is based in our area, and seeing first-hand the work that they do right across South East

“The Twinnies and their mum Helen are tireless workers. They are fortunate to have a number of dedicated volunteers to assist them, however I would encourage others in our community to consider volunteering with them, I am sure the experience would be very rewarding,” he said.

Helen said that they have some great people that contribute to what they do in so many different ways, depending on their skills and the time they have available.

“We appreciate all of them for their efforts,” she said.

And while there is plenty of hands on work required to keep the ‘rescue centre’ and the rehabilitation areas running, there is a lot of administrative work that has to happen each day, along with the work required to co-ordinate the volunteers. The girls are looking for someone in the community who would be able to take on this volunteer ‘Secretary’ role.

It wouldn’t need to be full-time, but the person will need good computer and organisational skills.

If you are interested in doing any kind of volunteer work, including yard and maintenance work, the best thing to do is to give the Twinnies a call and arrange a time to drop in and see them. They can show you around and explain the types of jobs they need assistance with.

Messy Church underway for 2015

Messy Church will commence on Sunday, February 1 with the focus on games and food – and lots of creative play and activities.

Messy Church is held at St George’s Anglican Church, 2 Walker Drive Maleny and begins at 4.00pm and ends with yummy food at 6.00pm.

The team plans to share in making pancakes, making a sack cloth bag, creating a cross and some fun games. As always participants of all ages have the opportunity of reconnecting with other families and friends over a sumptuous meal prepared by the Messy Church Food Team - where enjoyable conversations happen. Top Cancer Researcher to address Local Support Group

The Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group at its first gathering for 2015 will have an exceptional speaker, Associate Professor John Miles.

John is the team Head of the Human Immunity Laboratory at QIMR Berghofer Medical Professor John Miles Research Institute, Brisbane.

He will be speaking on ‘Rising Therapies: Using the Immune System to Kill Cancers’.

His research is focused on the cellular immune processes which determine the host's response to infectious disease, cancer and innocuous agents. The laboratory uses information from these basic studies for immunomonitoring and for immunomodulation via rational vaccine design and therapeutic interventions.

One of QIMR Berghofer's three Research Programs is cancer, one of the major causes of illness and death in Australia and the developed world. The Institute researches 13 different cancer types.

In 2012, more than 120,700 Australians were diagnosed with cancer (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). Cancer accounted for about three in 10 deaths in Australia, making it the second most common cause of death, exceeded only by cardiovascular diseases.

Cancer is a disease which is caused by abnormal cell growth and eventually spreads to other parts of the body. Some cancers are common within a family history and are clearly inherited, while others are caused by factors in the environment interacting with genetic susceptibilities. Many forms of cancer can be treated successfully if detected early.

Professor Miles will show a short video on T-cells killing cancer cells.

The support group offers an open invitation to all interested members of the community to join us to listen to this address. We also have a shared meal after the speaker, so please bring a snack for yourself, plus a little extra to share, we will provide a cuppa.

Gladys scores a century

By Lea Parkes It’s not often you get to attend the party of someone celebrating their 100th birthday, but for the McNamara family of Glass House Mountains last Tuesday saw them mark the special occasion with Kel’s mum Gladys who lives at Sunnymeade Park Retirement Village (and the first resident there to celebrate her hundredth birthday).

And with Glady’s sister Doris turning 99 this year, they could well be back at the Sunnymeade Park Retirement Village where both the ladies live, doing it all again in 2017.

Gladys lives in an independent duplex and with the assistance of regular carers she enjoys her semi-independent life.

Gladys is mum to two sons Noel and Kel, grandmother to six and great grandmother to 12, which will be 13 next month when Kel’s daughter KeleJane (pictured with Gladys) has her second child.

Kel said his mum didn’t have any pearls of wisdom about reaching her 100 years, but her mum did live to 97 so they are putting it down to the good genes in the family.

One of the jobs that Gladys had was working in the fashion department in David Jones in Brisbane and the family recall the pride she took in her appearance … from the photo it is clear that she still does.

Caloundra Clubs’ funding wins

Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle has congratulated three Glasshouse Country community groups who have received funds from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund funding grants to benefit their group / club.

These include Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club which has secured $28,800 to upgrade their tennis courts and the Glenview Primary P & C Association can now upgrade their hall and purchase required equipment with a funding grant of $33,735.

Landsborough School of Arts has been successful in securing $32,000 to assist them to implement stage two of their hall upgrade.

The Gambling Community Benefit Fund provides one-off grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations, with revenues sourced from gaming taxes placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines.

“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is an initiative that provides funding of up to $35,000 available to community groups on a quarterly basis.

The changing face of Beerwah

At present most Glasshouse Country residents are probably enjoying the benefits of progress, especially the new modern shopping centre at Beerwah.

However, change often brings with it nostalgia and interest in the past, so it is a good time to review the history of Beerwah and district.

Photographs of the town at various stages of its development are of particular interest.

Peachester History Committee is fortunate to have an extensive collection of Beerwah photographs as part of its local history collection.

Thanks to the efforts of the late Grace Hodgens (nee Simpson), who was a keen photographer from her teenage years, we can gain a fascinating insight into the growth of Beerwah township, especially Simpson Street and the buildings which formed the streetscape in the early 20th century.

Later decades, especially the 1940s to 1960s, are also well represented. There is a wonderful series of photographs of the town and local farms taken by the late Randall Wimberley (thanks to June Wimberley); and several PHC members and other families have contributed items of interest over the years.

Randall was a member of the Wimberley family who made a major contribution to the district through their grocery, hardware and drapery

Alvon Raddatz, who worked at Wimberley’s stores from 1958 until he retired in 2003, has a unique knowledge of the Wimberley family business and also the commercial changes in Beerwah generally. Alvon will be our special guest at the first PHC meeting for 2015 on Sunday, February 1. We will have a combined slide show of photos from the PHC collection and Alvon's personal files, and he will give a talk on the history of Wimberley’s stores.

Anyone with an interest in Beerwah history is welcome to attend, and you are invited to bring along photos or other memorabilia for display.

The meeting is at Peachester Hall from 11.00am, and includes a shared lunch.

I give a moo for mooloolah Give it a go and keep the heart of Mooloolah beating Funding for Mooloolah Memorial Oval

Last Thursday State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle announced funding of $250,000 to restoring Mooloolah’s 100 year old Memorial Oval and have a plaque dedicated to the soldiers who fought in World War 1.

Mr McArdle said the project had been in the works for a while and it was Mooloolah local Mr Jim Armstrong who first pursued the idea of restoring the Mooloolah oval.

“The restoration will honour the men who built the oval in 1909 and also will improve not only the game of cricket right across the Sunshine Coast, but provide an array of sporting facilities,” the Member for Caloundra said.

“I am very happy to announce funding of $250,000 contributed by the State Government to restore the oval. “The work will include a cricket pitch and multi-sport facilities,” he said.

Ben Haycroft of ‘Loggers Cricket’ was elated the funding had been approved and has already begun preparations for the restoration.

“This is great news,” Mr Haycroft said.

“We have had discussions with a representative of the Caloundra RSL and we will be exploring a memorial / scoreboard to commemorate those who cut the oval in 1909.”

Mr Jim Armstrong was humble after receiving the news.

“It’s like a message from heaven,” he said.

“The oval will be serving as a field for all sports with a built in cricket pitch, the possibility of a home cricket club in the future, and a memorial plaque dedicated to our brave soldiers.

Mooloolah researcher aims to enhance animal-assisted therapy New research is being conducted at the University of the Sunshine Coast to help improve the delivery of animal-assisted therapy.

Master of Social Work, research student Natalie Menyweather, who runs a private equine therapy service at Mooloolah, is keen to help establish procedures to ensure the ethical support of animals in social work practice, research and policy.

While her service gives children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) the opportunity to connect with horses, other animal-assisted therapy services involve clients spending time with cats and dogs.

“The human and animal bond is such a special relationship and I want to ensure, going forward, that animals are treated with respect and equality in the field of social work,” Natalie said.

Natalie started her own private practice in 2013 and has been amazed by the outcomes, whether animal-assisted therapy is used exclusively or in

conjunction with conventional forms of therapy.

“I run a support group with USC for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It amazes me how people, especially those with ASD, are drawn to animals,” she said.

Natalie said animal-assisted therapy in Australia was an area that had not been researched significantly.

Her research supervisor, USC Senior Lecturer in Social Work Dr Dyann Ross, said the study was very timely.

“This research is ground breaking in recognition of the absence of multi-species ethics and practice standards in social work and, in this regard, has much to contribute to the future development of social work and related helping professions,” Dr Ross said.

“We are seeing an increased adoption of animalassisted practices in society and with this comes the real challenge of 'doing things differently' so that traditional ways of working with animals shift and perhaps enable gentler, more mutual relationships with people as well.”

Promises promises

Yes the air is full of promises, but then we are right in the middle of an election, so what's new? This time around though, we should even be a bit more cynical, as a lot of these goodies are dependent on the current State government flogging off (leasing) various assets to would be or might not be buyers.

Having been told by the LNP Federal counterparts that each household will be $500 better off with the demise of the carbon tax (has anybody out there caught sight of this mysterious $500?), I do not have any confidence in the current promises e.g. the up-grade of the Sunshine Coast rail and the saga of the Glass House intersection lights. So many promises and the track record is nothing if not dismal.

Local bloke must be worried

Our state member who cannot make a decision in a month of Sundays, has his cohorts in their 4x4's and trailers all over the place with his photo placards, some left in spots that actually obscure the view of motorists. How many of those signs are they legally allowed again?

Remember the issue of upgrading Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way with traffic lights; it seemed that nothing could be done. He even had Scott Emerson (Minister for Transport and Main Roads) turn up a few months ago and stated that there were no monies available. He did advise that if they got back in power, and if the assets were sold, then it would be considered.

Now I am informed that within a week before the Premier announced his decision to call an early election, this Emerson character allegedly states he will update the intersection.

When and where did the money come from all of a sudden?

My other questions - why can they now say they will create 209,000 new jobs and 12,000 new apprenticeships? Why didn't they do that in their first term or even try to do it?

Electricity costs lower over next five years? How will that occur, when they want it sold off?

The LNP had to listen finally to the Queensland people who told them not to sell off our assets.

Thank God the people of Queensland are waking up, our local bloke is very worried and his signs and placards show that. I voted for him on the last occasion, I am allowed one mistake, but it will not happen on this occasion.

I will vote for the bloke who has his sign out on the road just up from the Reed Street intersection, can't tell you his name, and can’t see it, because of the jungle on the sides and in the median strip.

Concern re: Zipline

I understand some members of our community are concerned about consultation on the proposed Obi Obi Zipline. Whilst I have expressed my support for the project since day one, and know many in the community share in that support, I am listening to the concerns that have been raised by others.

Furthermore, I feel I need to remind the community that nothing has been signed and sealed on this project, and that as per my media statement on 30 May 2014, this project is only in the very initial proposal stages and nothing further has progressed in recent times. Should I be fortunate to be reelected as the Member for Glass House, I will most certainly be seeking further input from our community and I am confident that we can work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for everyone interested in this project.

Rail duplication – what a wonderful concept. Shame that 24 years ago when I moved to the hinterland and started my six year commute to work in Brisbane, the duplication of the rail lines was a hot topic – and now almost a quarter of a century later it’s being touted as a new idea, (subject to long-term leases of assets of course).

Every State Government whether LNP or Labor have chosen to ignore this vital piece of infrastructure to support the Sunshine Coast’s exponential growth through private development. Where has any Government negotiated a commitment from private developers to contribute to relieving their impact on hard and social infrastructure?

Is that because the Sunshine Coast is seen as blue ribbon LNP seats, so they don’t need to pay attention and commit support to the region’s huge growth to secure votes? Or because Labor Governments considered the Sunshine Coast was a lost battle?

The Green candidate for Glass House made a whole lot of sense, in my opinion, when questioning that the Government can only commit to rail duplication with long-term leasing of assets, yet the Newman Government has committed $450 million to developing a railway line for Adani’s Galilee Basin mining to ship Australia’s assets (coal) overseas for value adding and profit for an international company (of course via increased port movement potentially impacting on the Great Barrier Reef).

Then there’s social infrastructure – where is the mandate to the rollout of the NDIS in Queensland due to be released in December 2014? – will this be another election promise/announcement to make the Newman look good for a commitment that is already legislated?

Premier dilemma

If Campbell Newman loses his seat of Ashgrove and the LNP retain government, who will be our Premier? This is the question the LNP refuses to answer.

A poorly constructed Reach Tel poll last week returned Maroochydore’s Fiona Simpson as preferred Premier, but of course this is not a popularity contest, the LNP inner sanctum will ordain our next state leader.

For the sake of hard-working Queenslanders and those on low, fixed incomes.

On the front page of the Courier Mail on Saturday, January 17, Treasurer Nicholls in commenting on Labor’s economic plan said this: ‘You can’t use your income to both buy the groceries and pay down the mortgage. It’s just not possible.’

Is this bloke living in a parallel universe? I don’t know how they work the household budget there in Nicholls’ well-heeled seat of Clayfield, but for most of us there is only one pay packet and of course it buys the groceries and pays the rent / mortgage.

Nicholls’ lacks a grip on the real budget pressures of Queensland families.

With Labor what you see is what you get. If Labor wins office, Annastacia Palaszczuk will be Premier.

Are we mad? Can it really be true as the polls suggest that some of us want to return Campbell Newman to power?

This is a man so lacking in understanding of matters of principle that before he got into Parliament he breached Parliamentary Privilege by instructing Opposition members of Parliament how to vote.

After becoming Premier he appointed people he liked to senior positions, and changed the law so that his Attorney-General has the power to put anyone he doesn’t like in gaol for 15 years.

This is a man whose record in local government was such that his shoot-from-the-hip ‘can do’ boasting left the city of Brisbane with unused tunnels and yellow bikes?

A man who broke key promises about electricity prices and unemployment.

A man whose behaviour has alienated the legal and medical professions, and who wants to turn public schools into private schools at the cost of equality of opportunity for our schoolkids.

A man who blithely accepted a salary increase that the rest of us could not aspire to in our wildest dreams.

A man who talks about infrastructure for the people but whose only notable project to date has been a new executive building.

Most deceptive of all the elements in Newman’s election campaign, is all the talk about leasing public assets to pay for infrastructure.

It seems to be based on the naïve assumption that private firms somewhere out there can hardly wait to pay more to lease these assets than the government is already getting for running them.

And all of us know that any operation put in the hands of the private sector, whether leased or sold to them, can reward that sector only through the steady escalation of charges upon us, the poor consumers.

Think wisely as a vote for Newman is a vote for poverty and deprivation.

The single biggest issue is employment and the opportunities for employment.

The Sunshine Coast University Hospital will open in late 2016 and will need to employ an additional 2,000 staff. The hospital will expand to 6,000 employees by 2021 and will need an additional 2,500 staff.

Additionally the duplication of the railway from Beerburrum to Landsborough will require 3,000 jobs during construction and provide 130 services. These services will attract more people into the hinterland region thus providing opportunity for expansion of businesses and new businesses to set up.

As I said earlier the development and economic growth of the hinterland is most important and that can be undertaken by ongoing consultation with the local community, including the Chamber of Commerce and more importantly understanding the needs and aspirations of the people of the region.

Importantly the hinterland has a very strong future and by combining the growth in the hospital precinct plus the development of the railway duplication we can kick start further growth therein. Again it is important for that region to develop a niche market.

Question 2 The two issues in regards to cost of living are electricity prices and water charges.

In regard to electricity what we have done is removed the gold plating thus helping to reduce the cost of poles and wires which constitute 50% of every power bill. Energex has indicated that they are looking at an increase in power prices of 2.4% commencing 1 July 2015.

The LNP’s commitment to remove the costs of the solar bonus scheme from people’s bills will reduce the network charge by a further 9.7% approximately. These figures could even be reduced further based upon work to be undertaken by the Australian energy regulator in regard to the application I referred to. This will be the first time in a long time power bills will reduce.

In relation to water, the LNP government amalgamated bulk water entities. The bulk water charge would have been $83.00 per annum but we reduced it to $49.00 per annum. The government, if it obtains a mandate from the people, will set aside $2 billion to pay down debt owed on the water grid. One million people across South East Queensland will benefit from this debt reduction commencing in the 2016-17 year.

Question 1 The future. Residents want to be able to earn a living on the Sunshine Coast. They want their children also to grow up and have a quality of life based around their local community, and jobs built around their homes and locality. People in Caloundra have families to raise, mortgages to pay and in many cases, businesses to run. They can’t meet any of these needs without secure local employment and a willingness from the State Government to help them meet the rising cost of living. They also expect the Government to provide good quality and affordable health care and education.

There is no ‘quick fix’. It will take hard work and a genuine desire to listen to get things done for local communities. I believe the economy exists to support the local community; the local community does not exist to support the economy as an end in itself. Residents want a thriving township where they can prosper both economically and socially. They want enough income to live comfortably, provide for their children, and engage in a few modest luxuries.

When local residents achieve this, their confidence will grow and they will increase their spend with the local business community, therefore generating more local prosperity and local employment.

Question 2 We are standing on the shoulders of our parents, and grandparents. Through their sweat, hard work and taxes, they laid the foundation for the community services we have today.

We must not be the generation that oversees our assets being sold off for a paltry short term gain. Our public assets must be maintained in public hands so that the profits they produce, some billions of dollars per year, continue to pour into Treasury.

Asset sales will result in enormous increases in the cost of living for our communities. You only have to look at the southern States to see that this is true. The high prices and job losses that go hand in hand with privatisation will put huge pressures on the cost of living for our local communities.

These cost of living pressures can be met head on, simply by maintaining State ownership of our assets.

We can avoid this by simply voting for the Labor Party who will protect the assets and the jobs that go with them for the benefit of current and future generations.

Question 1 From working on the pre-polling booth in Caloundra for the last week, and talking and listening to residents, the majority are very concerned with asset sales and how that will impact on the cost of living and their ability to afford certain services.

This includes both electricity and water costs, and how much this will increase if the LNP retains Government and Asset Leasing goes ahead.

As energy prices have already increased quite substantially, it has already put pressure on low to medium income earners, the unemployed (which in itself is also of concern to the residents) and their families, so it’s understandable that this current issue has caused concern amongst our constituency.

Question 2 Outside of lobbying the elected Government to retain our state assets, we have plans to rejuvenate the economy by investing in more renewable energy incentives – specifically solar – as per our Fair Go 4 Solar initiative.

With our financial incentives we would expect more residents to take up solar alternatives, thus reducing their electricity bills and stopping their dependency on the big energy companies who are heavily invested in the fossil fuel industry.

Myself and The Greens will continue to push for the NBN – faster internet will in turn ensure greater competitiveness amongst providers and thus contribute to a reduction in costs to the consumer.

Our plan to diversify our economy by investing in research and innovation rather than fossil fuels and the mining industry will help create employment and encourage small businesses and entrepreneurs to expand.

Taking into account our plans for a world-class transport system here on the Sunshine Coast, as well as steps to create tax incentives for businesses, I believe we can create a vibrant and sustainable economy.

Barry provided the following as a way of introducing himself to the voters in the Caloundra electorate.

I am 50 years of age, my wife and I have operated the Aussie Battler Pie Van on Caloundra Road for the past 24 years. We have two adult children and one granddaughter.

I have served nine years in the RAAF; and I have been actively involved coaching junior basketball and cricket on the Sunshine Coast.

The reason why I want to represent the seat of Caloundra is to serve the people who have supported me and my family for the past 24 years.

If I am elected to the 55th state parliament, I would become the 5th person to represent the seat of Caloundra since 1950. I intend to donate a quarter of my wage to non-for-profit organisations within my parliamentary term.

Question 1 With the increased population the main issue in the seat of Caloundra is road infrastructure.

Our roads are congested, the type of infrastructure needed includes roads west of the Bruce Highway, and also the entire Steve Irwin Way needs to be four lanes all the way from Glass House Mountains to Mooloolah which would link in to existing road upgrades.

We also need a secondary road into Bellvista, and research into a Caloundra interchange option which is environmentally friendly, while maintaining viability for current businesses.

The countless benefits from these upgrades will see the economy thrive through increased business. The roads will also be safer, so therefore less accidents.

Question 2 Consideration should be given to financial assistance through subsidising manufacturers, growers and dairy producers. A cost benefit analysis would need to be carried out to help compensate farmers through difficult times.

Working closely with and support for small businesses is a major policy for me.

Small business is the back bone of the Sunshine Coast and needs to be promoted to encourage the community to buy locally to enable money to remain in the area.

I am frustrated when I go to any of the large supermarket chains and can’t purchase locally grown and produced goods. For example, I could only see strawberries grown in Western Australia, on the shelves, which I personally refuse to buy, considering all the strawberry producers on the Sunshine Coast.

When we buy locally we all benefit as it creates more jobs, it is environmentally friendly as there is less transportation needed, and it’s an investment in the community.

Question 1 Residents of the Glass House electorate considering voting Labor in this election want to know that Labor has a comprehensive, responsible plan to manage the state’s economy and reduce Queensland’s debt, which has risen some $15 billion over the past three years.

Labor’s treasury spokesperson Curtis Pitt admits the current level of debt is an issue that must be dealt with and has outlined a modest, methodical approach that provides debt reduction and increased frontline services without the need for asset sales.

Let me be perfectly clear on that point: if elected to office on January 31 Labor will not sell your state owned assets. The people of Queensland stated loud and clear in the 2012 election that they do not want their essential public assets flogged off into private hands.

The assets slated for privatisation return a net dividend of $2 billion to state revenue every year. Labor will use two thirds of that $2 billion annual income to pay down $5.4 billion in general government sector debt over six years, with a target of paying down $12 billion in debt over 10 years.

On the back of this fiscal plan, Labor’s spending commitments are very modest compared to those of the LNP but, importantly, our power stations, power lines and ports remain in the hands of all Queenslanders.

Keeping power stations and the poles and wires network in public hands is essential. None of us can withstand another surge in power bills.

As we have seen in South Australia, handing over the state power network to multinational corporations drives power prices up.

From an environmental perspective it is also vital to retain control of our coal-fired power stations. Anyone with a 49 year lease on a coal-fired power station will require a state guarantee they can operate that power station for the full term of the lease, locking us into coal fired power well beyond the point at which we should have transitioned to renewable energy. By retaining these power stations, the Queensland government controls the cautious, measured transition from coal to renewables.

Question 2 The most effective way to bring down the cost of living for people in Glass House is to create local jobs and stimulate local business. By giving residents the opportunity to work locally you reduce their travel time and travel expenses, freeing up more time and more disposable income to spend in the local community. This in turn has a flow on effect to local retail, hospitality and service businesses. Labor will not be handing out short-term cost of living bonuses in an effort to gain your vote. Our plan is to build a stronger state economy and local job market that will be self-sustaining over the long term.

Question 1 I mentioned in my last contribution that I felt achieving balance is something that many people in our Glasshouse community strive for.

That answer still rings true for this week.

Being able to balance the economic outcomes that so many in our community want to see whilst maintaining our environment and heritage is a huge concern for so many of us.

Our small businesses want to see economic growth and prosperity so they can continue operation and we need to maintain the landscape that made so many of us choose to live in our Hinterland towns.

Growing our local economy, growing our small businesses, will increase investment in our towns, and will generate more local jobs. Local employment is something I know is important to the people of Glass House.

More than 209,000 jobs will be created in Queensland over the next six years as a result of the LNP’s strong plan to secure the state’s economic future. For example, the $532 million rail duplication project from Beerburrum to Landsborough will see some 3,000 jobs created – many of them local.

I will work hard to grow employment opportunities in the Hinterland, but I will do it by balancing economic growth with the environment and wonderful local lifestyle.

Question 2 As the father of five young children, I have a fair idea of what families go through to juggle the budget each month.

People are doing it tough - which is why the LNP’s Strong Choices Cost of Living Fund has been created to provide $3.4 billion to directly ease cost of living pressure for families.

An LNP Government will draw on this fund to reimburse the electricity networks for the Solar Bonus Scheme payments they make, meaning local mums and dads will not have to pay it through their own electricity bills.

The Newman LNP Government’s Strong Choices Electricity Price Relief initiative gives us the opportunity to lower electricity prices by $577 on the average household’s power bill over the next five years.

The LNP Government knows that every little bit helps which is why we also announced that young drivers who do the right thing on the roads will be rewarded with a free three year license. And in addition to that, our strong economic management has seen public transport fares cut by 5% and now capped. This is the first time that fares across the State have gone down in Queensland’s history, and they will not increase again next year.

The LNP Government will continue to look for opportunities to tackle cost of living pressures on Queensland families, making sure our State is the best place to live, work and raise your family.

The voters of Glass House are certainly concerned about the economy and cost of living but don’t want to see the environment play second fiddle to coal and gas mining. Nor do they believe that we should privatise income generating assets (whether it is a sale or a lease, it is still a privatisation plan).

Voters are concerned about the Government’s approach to spending billions of tax-payers money subsidising private mining companies and promoting more casinos when small businesses are struggling. Unemployment continues to increase not decrease, funding for the community sector has been gutted, and vital support services have had to close their doors.

There needs to be a readjustment of the economic levers so that there is greater support for communities rather than just for big business and it isn’t just wealthy donors who are supported by Government policy.

By creating an economic ‘crisis’, the Government have attempted to justify putting the burden of repairing the budget onto the shoulders of the most vulnerable – low and middle income earners – while protecting the corporate welfare and support for the most wealthy.

The voters are telling me there needs to be a change to the way things are done in Queensland, where the Government leads for the benefit of the whole of Queensland, not for a privileged few.

Question 2

Cost of living, especially electricity price increases, is a massive concern to the residents of Glass House.

Research has shown that the biggest driver behind recent electricity price rises has been over-investment in ‘poles and wires’, which now account for 50% of our power bills.

Rooftop solar ‘flattens’ peak power use during the hottest part of the day and reduces the need to ‘gold plate’ the electricity network, which lowers power bills for everyone.

For this reason, The Greens plan to shift away from the massive tax-payer funded, fossil fuel subsidies paid to big mining companies and reinvest $170 million of that money into the rooftop solar sector to keep prices down for everyone. We want to help Queenslanders take control of their power bills with clean, cheap electricity.

We will set aside $30 million for 60,000 lowinterest loans for solar installation, $40 million for 40,000 solar power and storage systems for social housing, low income households, and charities, and kick start research into solar generation, storage and transmission and into solar business models with a $100 million investment. This is on top of our plan to implement a Queensland renewable energy target of 90% by 2030 to drive investment in renewable and provide a steady transition away from the carbon intensive industries that are putting our planet at risk from climate change.

Local Craft Show entry underway Chief Steward of the Tapestry and Cross Stitch section of the Maleny Show, Lindy Hassall, took time out to visit one of her competitors in this section.

Hilda Penney has been entering ‘Counted Cross Stitch’ in the over 70 years class for the past nine years. Lindy was pleased to see that Hilda has almost completed her 10th entry.

Hilda’s children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren will each receive one of her prize winning entries in due course.

Turning 90 this year, Hilda takes particular care with this type of work as the Judges get out their magnifying glass to check on the stitching.

No squares should be left un-worked and every stitch in a piece must be worked in the same direction, it’s something that requires a lot of concentration and detail, when following a chart to produce the end result.

All entries in the needlecraft sections must be completed in the last two years, and when these items have a lot of detail, it is amazing to see the overall results of the finished article.

Lost art of rug making going strong in Glasshouse Country By Lea Parkes Judi with some If you have been into the Beerwah Library this month you will have seen the beautiful ‘Under the Sea’ display of traditional rug making in the foyer. These works have been created by the Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters who meet regularly at the library.

The group’s co-ordinator Landsborough local Judi Tompkins is passionate about ensuring that the ‘lost’ traditional craft of rug making is retained, and she has encouraged many others to join her in this journey. The first thing that Judi emphasises is the craft is not ‘latch hook rugs’ that many of us made as kids.

The traditional craft was significantly different; it was developed in the northern hemisphere where people needed rugs as warm floor coverings.

In those days, rug making was for practical purposes and the floor coverings were produced from rags or scraps of fabric that was available.

Sadly the rugs did not last long, since they were made from feed or flour sacks and fell to pieces over time, which means there aren’t many samples available today.

Judi, along with a number of other artists and craftspeople across the country, have been working to revive the traditional techniques used in the craft.

With the incredible range of fabrics available for rug hooking, now the ‘traditional craft’ extends to include wall hangings, fibre and 3-dimensional art. It’s re-emerging as an accessible art form.

Judi has been involved in the rug making since 2010, and established the Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters group in 2012.

The group meets from 2.30pm – 5.30pm on the second Monday and third Tuesday of each month in the meeting room at the Beerwah Library.

Beerwah CWA - are offering learn the basic stitches of embroidery at their hall in Simpson Street at 9.30am on Monday, February 16. You will need to bring scissors and an embroidery hoop if possible. The hoop is not essential but it does make for more even work. Everything else you require will be provided in a kit that will cost $5.00. In the kit will be ruled sampler material, thread, needle, needle threader and photocopies of some of the basic stitches. RSVP by February 10, Debbie on 0400 027 591, bookings essential. Council is committed to increasing the pathway networks across the region in line with development opportunities and budget – and I’m pleased to advise that Beerwah will soon be showcasing some new additions.

Over the next two months, locals can look out for new pathways coming to Chantilly Crescent, Parkside Drive, Belton Court and between Beerwah Sportsground and the railway line.

Works will also start this month on replacing the existing timber footbridge on Peachester Road, Beerwah due to it reaching the end of its serviceable life. A new pathway has also just been completed at Beerburrum State School to help keep parents and children safe when travelling to and from the school grounds.

Community invited to have their say on waste

I’d like to remind residents that they still have a chance to comment on council’s draft waste strategy. The strategy shapes future waste infrastructure needs for the Sunshine Coast, supports the development of resource recovery markets, ensures waste management remains cost effective and customer focused and protects public health and the natural environment. You can view the strategy on council’s website or you can find hard copies in council libraries and customer contact centres. Submissions close February 13.

The draft waste strategy, including any amendments from the consultation process, will be presented to Council for adoption in April.

While council has an ongoing proactive control program to monitor and combat mosquitoes, residents also play an important role in reducing the numbers. From cleaning up your yard to emptying water out of old pots, containers and tyres, there are a number of small things you can do to help prevent mosquitos breeding around your home.

Mooloolah Rec Reserve improvements

Given the hot temperatures we’ve been experiencing lately, I’m happy to advise that construction of a new shelter at Mooloolah Recreation Reserve has started. The new facility will include a new barbecue and two sets of tables and chairs. It is anticipated the new shelter will be ready for community enjoyment by mid February (weather permitting).

In more good news, the upgrade of the amenities block is currently in the design phase and will be out to tender soon.

Last but by no means least I am excited to confirm the Mooloolah Rec Reserve will soon have a new cricket pitch. We are currently finalising design plans for the cricket wicket and relevant safety works around it.

I know local residents will appreciate having this facility completed in time for Anzac Day as I am informed the men used to play cricket there before they left for war, so this may form part of the local commemoration.

Grants galore

During 2014 council provided more than $3.5 million in grants to community organisations, and four terrific council grants programs are open right now for application. Artists and cultural organisations can apply for a Regional Arts Development Fund grant for projects that provide professional development opportunities for local artists.

Private rural landholders can apply for a Landholder Environment Grant to assist with environmental projects. Not-for-profit community organisations, with a project, activity or event that benefits the Coast community or environment, can apply for a Community or Environment Levy Grant.

Funding is very competitive from a wide range of groups so we encourage interested applicants to plan and prepare and contact us if they need help. Our grants information sessions, being held throughout the region in February, provide a great opportunity for applicants to get grant writing tips and explore other funding opportunities.

The green came back into play after its annual renovation last Wednesday with 20 players enjoying their first game back after the Christmas break. Results of the Triples were Trevor Bertram, Maurie Dawes and Steve Palmer 22 def Grahame Young, Brian Larkin and Kerry Capern 12; and Millie Freshwater, Noelle Dean and Rae Farrell 24 def Doug Loveday, Ron Wilson and Joy Reason 12. In the Pairs games, Graham Anstis and Di Hunt 25 def Bob Bloomer and Marleen Bertram 12; and Julie Palmer and Warren Blackbourne 24 def Leisa Craven and Dave Clarke 8.

Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Rodney Dick and Vic Muscat with two wins and the Highest Margin of +12 and the Runners-up, with the Highest Margin in either game of +12 were Bob Bloomer and Bob Moss.

The first round of Super Challenge was played at and against Ferny Grove on Sunday, January 18. Our Ladies won both their Triples and Fours games scoring 10 points and the Men’s side went down, winning two of the five rinks. Round 2 will be played on Sunday, February 1 ‘at home’ with the Ladies playing Beenleigh and the Men playing Wynnum.

The Summer Series of the Business, Community and Sports Bowls Competition commences on Wednesday, February 4 and will run for eight Wednesday nights through to March 25. Teams are requested to arrive at the Club by 6.00pm or soon after as play commences at 6.30pm. Come along for a meal or just watch the game from the Club’s new deck.

Not a popular competition, but none the less an intricate cog in our golfing calendar. The trophy was sponsored by the club and was keenly contested by 50 players. The players were divided up into 2 divisions and the winners were: Division 1 Winner Helen Lewis with a -2.

BeeGees Soccer Club prepares for 2015 This season BeeGees have a new Senior Men’s Coach.

Johnny Boyle has taken over from last season’s Senior Men’s Coach Shaun Decourcy, who has had to leave for personal reasons.

We would like to thank Shaun and his team of David Payne and Gavin Thistlethwaite for their efforts last season with limited squad numbers.

We saw some improvement from the previous season and we are confident that Johnny Boyle and his back room staff can improve us again this season, with the addition of a few players.

Johnny’s love of football began at a young age, and he’s looking forward to his new role with the club.

“I arrived in Australia from bonny Scotland in February 2003, married to Sharon, and have two sons, Gary and Tony,” said Johnny.

“Always been a football mad player and fan since I was born.

“When a serious condition hit me, I had to give

up playing, and decided to move into coaching, where I’ve have coached from Under 5’s to senior’s.

“Previous clubs I have coached over the last five years include Caloundra and Kawana, and when Paul asked me to consider coming to BeeGees, I jumped at the chance.

“It is a very well-run club with very loyal players and a great committee.

“I am looking forward to the challenge ahead, and hope the community comes along and gives us a great deal of support, " he said.

The senior men’s team has already started training each Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30pm and any new players interested in joining the team are welcome to come along.

You Said It Cycling is good for you

I agree, in part, with Kim (GCNews January 21) and her safety concerns for cyclists.

I am an avid cyclist and regularly cycle around this region, even down the Beerwah-Woodford Road. But you won’t see me without a flashing red light at the rear and another at the front.

The groups I belong to actively encourage visibility with the use of lights and bright jerseys (often orange, red or yellow). I suspect the cyclists Kim saw are not from this area and may have come up here from the coast, where of course there are much wider shoulders on the road and it is safer to cycle two abreast.

However, motorists have their part to play as well. There are still some who come too close to us or toot horns loudly because they do not want us to exist. And yet cycling should be encouraged.

In a recent study by King’s College, London, scientists analysed the physiological functions of more than 120 regular cyclists aged 55 to 79 and found they were physically and biologically much younger than most people of the same age.

Demands on Australia’s health system are at unsustainable levels due to the obesity crisis and alcohol-related problems. In contrast, intense exercising like cycling can only have societal benefits. It is not only good for you, but also lots of fun.

I belong to several clubs in this region that cater for all levels of cycling. Bush Rangers (bushrangers.org) is for mountain bikes riders.

Maleny Lycra Lizards (malenycycling.com) meets on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday mornings at the Maleny Library. And the Sunshine Coast Bicycle Touring Club (scbr.org.au) has weekend rides which cater for most levels of proficiency.

Their rides start from various locations, including Landsborough or Beerwah. I will be leading two rides in the next few months (March 8 and April 12) and local cyclists are welcome to come along.

Christmas Lights 2014

We would like to thank all the wonderful people who visited us at our Christmas Lights display.

To see the happiness on everyone’s faces brought us much joy. Thank you to Beerwah Recycling and Glasshouse Country news for running the competition.

However on a sad note, to the person who stole our musical moose on Christmas Eve from our verandah display, please return him to his home on Old Landsborough Road. He has been a member of our family for the last eight years.

We will be back again this year with many new additions to our display, but maybe not as trusting.

While walking down the street one day, a politician is hit by a truck and tragically dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St Peter who explains that they like politicians to spend one day in hell and one in heaven, and then they choose where to spend eternity.
