Spectacular orchids on show

EVERY WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 27 - 2017. VOL 32-21

The Glasshouse Country Orchid Society held their 30th annual Spring Orchid Spectacular at the Beerwah Community Hall last Friday and Saturday. The group’s members were kept busy from 8.30am by local orchid enthusiasts wanting inspiration and getting in early to purchase the wonderful orchids on sale. Fortunately the club’s youngest member, Caitlin Smith, aged 8 (almost 9), was on school holidays so she was busy working on the day with her fellow members who ranged in age into their mid-80s. It would seem that you are never too young or too old to admire these beauties and appreciate the work involved in keeping them.

Wow! On Saturday morning we headed out to the Mooloolah Recreation Grounds (on the left hand side of Mooloolah Connection Road when you are heading into the township) to the official opening of the town’s newest recreation facility. Finally the younger kids of Mooloolah have got their own skate park to use and, on the day of the official opening, it was amazing just how many local kids were giving it a go. Timed to be open for the school holidays, it was certainly proving to be pretty popular with kids on skateboards and scooters. This facility is a great place for the younger kids to learn and develop their skills, however for someone like myself with appalling coordination, I still think as a kid I would have been intimidated. However, there were kids as young as two (on their little pedal-less bikes) even giving it a crack, so it seems there are plenty of young fearless kids out there! So, for all the media attention that is given to discussion about young kids these days having too much screen time – this has got to be a great addition to our community. It is a great place for the kids to expend some energy and for families to catch up and connect while having fun in the great outdoors! Regards,

Having only recently bought our house, the kitchen was high on our to-do list. We didn’t worry about looking for other quotes as we heard how great Kev’s work was, and on meeting him we knew we had found the team for us. Kev was able to give us plenty of options, and come up with ideas we hadn’t thought of – he was absolutely brilliant! Kev and the team are very clever at what they do; we would definitely use them again, and highly recommend their work.

Mooloolah Skate Park grand opening! Last Saturday, the Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA), in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Council, officially opened the brand new Mooloolah Skate Park to an appreciative crowd. The celebrations, which kicked off at 10am, were well attended by local families and community members as well as Cr Jenny McKay, Mark McArdle MP and Andrew Powell MP. Long standing secretary of the MVCA, Anita Verwayen, is thrilled that the association has been able to respond to ongoing community requests for a local skate park and, after nearly two years of discussions, community engagement and project applications, Mooloolah now has a fantastic new kid-friendly facility located in the heart of town at the Recreation Ground. “The new skate ramp has primarily been designed for children under 12, however we would hope that children of all ages can enjoy it and be respectful of the younger kids who may well be tomorrow’s skateboard champions!” Anita said.

Mooloolah cowboy riding high Even though local Mooloolah cowboy Ian Day was bucked off his bull at the Mooloolah Rodeo, he continues to lead the over 40s Gundy Pub Jackpot Bullriding series. Ian, 41, travels hundreds of kilometres each weekend with his partner and kids, "living the dream" as he puts it. After being stepped on by his bull last month he had a few weeks off bullriding and slipped a few places in the Queensland standings, but he remains in the top five and in with a good chance to qualify for the senior pro bull riding world finals in the USA.

Ian is looking forward to competing in round three of the Gundy Pub series on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend at Gundiah. Ian often competes in the novice event against men as young as 18. The over 40s series has more suitable stock for the guys who can’t get up and run as fast as they use to. Ian is currently seeking sponsorship for the 2018 series to work alongside current sponsor East Coast Images Sunshine Coast. Received your Postal Survey?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has confirmed that the progressive mail-out of the Australian Marriage Postal Survey is going to schedule and all eligible Australians should have received their forms by Monday, September 25. ABS Deputy Australian Statistician and Taskforce Lead Jonathan Palmer said, “We’re aware that there are people who’ve moved house and haven’t updated their address on the Electoral Roll. “To make sure they have their say, they can update their address by contacting the ABS via our website – www.marriagesurvey.abs.gov.au – or by calling the Information Line on 1800 572 113. “A replacement form will be sent to their current address and the form sent to their old address will be made invalid,” he said. “After 25 September, people who haven’t received their survey materials can also request new materials via the ABS website or the Information Line. “The survey materials will contain a new survey form, a Reply Paid envelope and instructions on how to complete the survey,” he said. Mr Palmer said the ABS was also aware of media reports of people opening former tenants’ mail and returning their completed survey forms. “If you receive a survey form not addressed to you, do the right thing and just return it to sender. It’s illegal to open others’ mail, unless you have their express permission as a trusted person,” he said. “When a replacement form is issued, the previous form will be invalidated and if it has been received its response will not be counted. “Stealing or tampering with mail is a criminal offence that carries serious penalties,” he said.

Tree Planting for Hot Dry Weather

with Scott and Haidee from Polyculture Holistic Land Services

With the climate outlook for this coming summer looking like below normal rainfall, we thought it best to share our tree planting guide. Give the young trees a big loose pad of soil to get their roots out and down without competition from the grass. Water them in well with some added nutrition. Then cover the tree pad with cardboard to suppress grass and weeds. The cardboard protects the young tree from any toxins leeching from the new wood chip you put on top. As the cardboard breaks down, it releases carbon back into the soil and allows the fungal based compost from the wood chip to spread down into the tree roots where it is needed, all while keeping the soil at a steady cool temperature. You won't need to water as often. After your tree is twice the size from the first day, you can start watering around the edges of the cardboard. To learn more about this method and much more.

Andrew Powell welcomes two big wins for the environment

Single-use plastic bags and drink containers are among the worst polluters of our environment. Drink containers are estimated to contribute nearly a quarter of all litter collected in Queensland, while single-use plastic bags contribute to the death of hundreds of thousands of birds and sea mammals nationwide. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said plastic bags are persistent and toxic in the environment and every year Queenslanders use one billion plastic bags, many of which cause significant environmental damage because they take 1000 years to decompose. Call Scott and Haidee “So called ‘biodegradable’ bags pose an even on 5499 4656 greater risk, because they break into smaller www.polyculture.com.au bits that resemble food for sea creatures. Nearly POLYCULTURE HOLISTIC LAND USE ADVISOR a third of sea turtle deaths in Moreton Bay are caused by ingestion of plastic bags and 70% of Loggerhead turtles in Queensland have ingested BDSc plastic,” Andrew said. The bag ban will affect lightweight plastic shopping bags, including the biodegradable kind, Shop 2, 7 Turner St, Beerwah which will no longer be supplied to the customer. (next to Beerwah Post Office) The ‘Container Refund Scheme’ is similar to HOURS: Monday to Thursday 8.00am till 5.00pm the model used in South Australia for 40 years, Friday and Saturday mornings by appointment which has effectively cut down on littering. “Many constituents have reminisced to me the days when, as a kid, they could collect cans and make a dollar or two. Well, those days will be returning and I’m confident the community will be as excited as I am,” Andrew said. To promote public awareness of these upcoming changes, Mr Powell will be joined by the Boomerang Alliance for a community and business forum at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club on October 19. The forum will be an opportunity for local businesses and community organisations to learn how these schemes will work, how they will affect them, and how they can participate. Of particular focus will be how local organisations could contribute to the container collection network and how the refund scheme can help with community fundraising. Mr Powell will chair the event, which will include a presentation by the Boomerang Alliance and a Q&A to discuss issues and concerns about the new policies. Whilst the event is aimed at local businesses and community organisations, there will be something for everyone, so interested locals are welcome to come along. Business News

Update with Spencer Shaw Chamber President

Local food partnership

Glass House Mountains camel milk dairy, QCamel, and Hinterland restaurant and venue, Flaxton Gardens, are demonstrating the power of innovative collaboration in the local food industry with the two businesses having recently partnered to bring camel milk from the paddock to the plates of local diners. Family-owned dairy QCamel was the first to produce pasteurised camel milk in Australia, which they lovingly made Yasmin Brisbane and Alan using ethical, organic and sustainable Tho mpson with Charlie farming practices. Their camels are pasture fed in a no-cull environment where they share the milk with the calves. QCamel Director Lauren Brisbane said their product is “nature’s healthiest milk, camel milk is not only delicious but assists with restoring a healthy gut and bowel. “Camel Milk is nearly identical in taste to regular milk. Some people note it is slightly salty with a sweet after taste. Although low in fat, it has a delicious creamy body to it,” she said. Taking advantage of this unique flavour and texture, Flaxton Gardens’ Executive Chef and Director, Alan Thompson, has created a delightfully innovative dessert, Camel Milk & Vanilla Bean Panacotta with Rhubarb. Alan said camel milk is beautifully sweet to taste and has a very smooth texture. The sweetness of the camel milk balances well with the tartness of the rhubarb. “What better way than working with an exciting product that has been used for centuries but not yet made it into Australia’s everyday diet,” he said.

On a personal note, after a taking a bit of time away from our business for holidays and time off to progress renovations, it’s been great to get back and get stuck into work again. Sometimes in business (and life in general) it’s easy to get tunnel vision and I can heartily recommend time off to rest, relax and get a fresh perspective. As spring rolls on, its time to enjoy to the last of the cool weather and don’t forget to allow for some personal chill time to keep fresh and enjoy your life. Coming up for our October networking breakfast on Tuesday the 10th we have a great venue at Spicers Tamarind and our speakers are Arts Connect discussing Sculpture on the Edge, one of South East Queensland’s premier sculpture events, now in its seventh year. Book via the Maleny Commerce website. This is our second last event for 2017. Hot topic on the streets of Maleny at the moment, is Sunshine Coast Council parking officers visiting to notify and enforce parking regulations on Maple Street and surrounds. After checking in with council we have been informed they are currently undertaking a warning notification period for breaching of timed regulated parking areas, but in approximately two weeks new signs will be in place and fines will be issued for overstaying times indicated in regulating parking areas. It’s unfortunate that Maleny requires regulation and enforcement, but signs by themselves are often ignored and we must remember that these are shared public spaces for the benefit of a growing community and a growing number of visitors. In the long term (long term being next week), Maleny does need more public parking investment by our council to ensure there is adequate parking for our growing popularity. Keep up the good business Maleny, Cheers, Spencer

Community News Mountain View Challenge on again

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, Mountain View Challenge is on again for its sixth year. The annual event has attracted runners from all over South East Queensland as well schools entering teams of pupils and parents. Last year’s event saw over 220 runners, from the experienced athletes competing in the half marathon events, to primary school pupils entering the 3,000m run. The event raises funds for Childhood Cancer Research, a disease close to the heart of many families throughout Australia. Research is ongoing and needs support to try to find a cure for this dreadful disease. The Mountain View Challenge is being held on Sunday October 15 at the Maleny Showgrounds. There is a half marathon (21.1km), 10,000m, 5,000m and 3,000m runs, and a 3,000m family walk. The half marathon, 10,000m and 5,000m event route follows the edge of the Blackall Range overlooking the magnificent Glass House Mountains. The half marathon event has challenged athletes who say its undulating route is the best they have run and the most competitive. The shorter events have attracted both seasoned athletes and school pupils from as far afield as Caloundra. The 3,000m event last year saw the Caloundra City Private School winning the Schools Participation Trophy with 14 students competing. They will again be back to defend the trophy this year.

There is prize money for the Half Marathon, 10,000m and 5,000m runs, with the main focus of the 3,000m run being for primary schools to put in a team to compete for the participation trophy for their school. Cat and dog owners should have received their annual Sunshine Coast Council animal registration renewal notices which need to be paid for by September 30. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said registration of cats and dogs was an important part of responsible pet ownership. “All cats and dogs must be registered with council each year,” Cr McKay said. “Not only does registration information help council to reunite lost pets with their owners, it also helps in planning for dog friendly areas and infrastructure, such as dog off-leash parks.” There are 44,925 dogs and 9,031 cats registered with council. Significant registration fee discounts apply for dog and cat owners who have had their pets de-sexed and micro-chipped with the cost being just $13 or free for pensioners. There is also the option of a lifetime registration for de-sexed and micro-chipped cats that is only $78 with no annual renewal required. Registration is free for pets under six-monthsold. New residents to the Sunshine Coast can transfer their cat or dog registration for free, so if you’ve recently moved to the area now is the time to contact council and register your pet.

Looking for some fun physical activity?

Maleny Bowls Club will be starting their next twilight barefoot bowls competition on Wednesday night, October 4. Club Chairman Graeme Glover said that twilight barefoot bowls is a great opportunity to take advantage of warm Hinterland evenings for some socialising and physical activity. “Bowling is fun, active and definitely not just for the retirees,” he said. The Wednesday nights kick off at 6pm with a delicious sausage burger. Games commence at 6.30pm with teams of three playing twelve ends. After the games, results are announced and prizes awarded and the evening is generally concluded around 9pm. Bowlers enjoy the bowling along with the not so serious competition and, at the same time, show great improvement in their bowling skills. Bowls and instruction are supplied along with your burger, all for just $13. The club invites members of the local community to start to get their teams of three organised and to come along on this Wednesday night to register. Alternatively, they can leave their team details on the club phone: 5494 2335. “If you don’t have a team, come along anyway and we will find a team for you – and no experience necessary,” Graeme said.

Moo fun at Moo Fest

Contributed by Nat Pettingill The recent Moofest held at the Mooloolah Recreation grounds was a huge success with heaps of children and families from everywhere attending. Nickleby the Magician was a huge hit with parents and children, engaging the crowd with his humour and magic. Children also loved the animal farm, photo booth, kids zone, and trying to balance on the slacklines thanks to the Bruise Bros. Everyone enjoyed watching Shane Christensen work on carving a log into a beautiful king parrot which will be auctioned online via the Fusion fundraising dinner next month. Then the last band, Fat Picnic, and their funky tunes got the crowd moving and dancing till the very end. It was a great decision by the Moofest committee to finish at 7pm this year so we could say goodbye to Moofest 2017 with an amazing display of fireworks thanks to KC Fireworks. We hope everyone had an awesome day out at Moofest this year. Thanks again to Whites IGA and Bassett Barks, our major sponsors, and all other sponsors, as well as all our dedicated volunteers that made this day possible and, most importantly, affordable for families. Moofest has always been about families and giving them a quality and affordable fun day out and it just keeps getting better each year. Big thanks also to Fusion and all the volunteers they send to help.

Become a home library volunteer Did you know Sunshine Coast Libraries provide a home library service which delivers books to borrowers who for one reason or another cannot access a library branch? You may be eligible for this free service if you: • Live in the Sunshine Coast region and are frail or unwell; • Suffer from a long-term illness (a short-term incapacity may also qualify); • Have no one who can visit on your behalf. This is a vital service that allows people who are unable to visit a library branch to continue to experience the magic of reading. The Home Library Services Coordinator determines eligibility and teams you with a suitable volunteer. The volunteer chooses, delivers and returns books and other items. Items are chosen based on availability and the profile created by you upon entry to this service. The volunteer also offers the valuable social contact that people receive when they visit their favourite library which is a real community hub and meeting place. The Home Library service at Maleny has been running successfully for several years and involves delivering books directly to our residents and suiting the interests of each individual. Some residents who used to read books a lot have changed to audio books as they enjoy the journey while they listen to their stories. To find out more about the home library service phone 5475 8989 or head to the libraries contact form on council’s library website: https:// library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Trees Exhibition For those who can make it into Maleny Library, head to the launch of Judi Parkinson’s Trees Exhibition at 5.30pm on October 3. Judi is a multi-media artist who uses photography and videography to create therapeutic storytelling images for use in the care industry, including Dementia Specific Units, therapists and home carers. In this exhibition, she uses oil paints to explore the strength and harmony of trees and nature in her garden and local landscapes from Flaxton and Landsborough to Harper Creek. No bookings are necessary to attend the launch and the exhibition will run until October 31.

ChristmasFeasting Well, that is it – time to throw my hands in the air and say, “It’s official! The countdown is now on for Christmas.” We kind of have an unwritten rule here at GC&M News that we try not to include too much about the idea of Christmas until at least October (so we are a couple of days early), and then once the first mention has been made, that’s it, we declare the ‘Preparation for the Festive Season’ now open. We are starting off kind of gently with this one

pager on ‘Christmas Feasting’. We do feel it is our duty to scare and shock you with the knowledge that you need to start booking all of your tasty Christmas treats now, as we don’t want you to be disappointed. And most importantly, you need to get busy organising Christmas parties, dinners and catch ups with friend, workmates and family. If it is a nice relaxed lunch with garden views you're after, then you can’t go past the Hideaway at Beerwah, and if you love a great traditional Indian meal, you can’t go past booking a table at Bombay Bliss. Or for something a little different, Daepo Korean BBQ has the awesome buffet along with a great range of items on the menu. But, if it is catering

for a Christmas at work or home that you are thinking about, I reckon just close your eyes and visualise what you would most like someone else to make for you. For Christmas Day you will want to make sure you have the best ham around, and you can’t go past Barry Family Butchers – Peachester Gold, award winning ham. For the work Christmas party, I am thinking platters of tasty chicken wings, selection of some nice lamb cutlets or some fat sausages, then talk to the crew at Meat at Landsborough. Okay, now you are in the right head space – get on the phone and start placing your orders. Ahh, work done... sit back and relax now until December.

School News Blues Brothers rocked Beerwah

Contributed by Deb Ives Students from Beerwah State School were rehearsed, excited and ready to perform at the school's bi-annual concert in the last week of term. With both a matinee and evening show, parents, friends and students alike enjoyed two hours of spectacular performances. The Senior Band performed under the direction of music teacher Ms Deady, while the Junior Beginner Band had the opportunity to make their debut to an enthusiastic audience. Highlights of the concert included the combined Prep classes who delivered a Disney's 'Moana' rendition that delighted the crowds with amazing props and stage presence. The Blues Brothers, Fireflies, and The Trolls also made guest appearances. Year 6 students entertained the crowd between acts with hilarious and simple skits. The students and teachers will enjoy a welldeserved rest in the holidays after all the time and effort of planning, costume and prop making, and performing on stage. Congratulations to all those involved.

Jungle Book success

Contributed by Chelsa Harry Students from Glenview State School gave an extraordinary performance of the Rudyard Kipling favourite, The Jungle Book. Over three days of performances, students enjoyed a full house of stunned parents, friends and members of the Glenview and Mooloolah communities. “It really was well beyond what we expected,” said one visiting mother. Plenty of blood, sweat and tears had gone into the production of the musical. Costumes made by Lee McCrae were “theatre company” level and the naturally brilliant acting from the lead roles left many suggesting that the show should be taken to theatres in Brisbane. As a director the experience was a humbling one, you put in the hours and hope like crazy that

you’ve chosen the right kids for the job, and then you sit back in awe as they totally blow you away with their confidence. Glenview has created a name for itself over the past five years, with a steady flow of musical accolades coming their way. Where to from here? It seems the sky is the limit.

Science exploration at Australia Zoo

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Students from Year 3 & 4 at Mooloolah State School took a great Australia Zoo adventure to consolidate their science curriculum this term. Year 3 students attended a 'Tribe talk' about life cycles and animal classifications, whilst the Year 4 students attended a separate talk about endangered species, ecosystems and protection. The students then had opportunities to explore the zoo and visit the animal hospital and attend the croc and bird show. They saw zebras, tigers, crocs, birds, koalas and a whole lot more. They all had a wonderful experience and many had not attended the zoo before.

When asked what their favourite experience for the day was, they answered with: “Zebras, tigers, the animal hospital and the shows." They just wished they could just stay longer.

Helping your child become school ready Did you know that Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre offers a quality driven Kindergarten program with highly experienced teaching staff? With the added convenience of providing long day care hours if required, both working and at home parents may also be eligible for the government funded Kindergarten program subsidy offered through the Centre. With an aim to providing complete social and emotional preparation for school, the (kindergarten) School Ready Room focuses on developing independence and self reliance in children. Building ability and confidence, developing sound decision making choices and encouraging children to ask for assistance if required are some of the skills the children develop - all within an engaging and stimulating environment. Silvia Thomas is the early childhood teacher at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre and as a highly qualified teaching professional she brings 30 years experience to her position. Silvia has a wealth of knowledge behind her, and over the years she has worked in a range of different types of educational settings including long day care and preschools, community based and privately run kindergartens.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

She has lectured at TAFE in early childhood studies and is constantly engaged with new developments in her industry to ensure that she provides an excellence of teaching that benefits her own passion and the nurturing of her students. Running the ‘School Readiness Room’, Silvia loves engaging with the four and five year olds as she helps them build the skills and knowledge to ensure the smoothest transition possible to ‘big school’. The Centre has a strong focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities as well as plenty of nature inspired play. Earlier this year the classroom added a brand new interactive ‘Smart Board’ which is proving to be very exciting for the school ready children. Other popular projects this year have included an intensive ‘Paddock to Plate Vegetable Program’, learning about the life cycle of lizards (including watching them hatch!), building with project blocks and using counting and matching shapes skills, as well as using problem solving skills to make ‘monster trucks’. Locally based staff member Reanna Randall is Assistant Educator in the school ready room and is currently completing her Diploma in Childcare services from the Australian Institute of Early Childhood Studies.

A mother of four, Reanna comes from an Indigenous background and loves to help educate and encourage child friendly activities that incorporate the importance of Indigenous cultural heritage. With the support of the Centre, Reanna draws upon her cultural connections to plan activities for the children that familiarise them with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture such as painting, Dreamtime stories and dancing. Assisting with the children aged between four and five, Reanna truly loves interacting with them as they discover new things, learn and grow. Outdoor play is a huge focus for the children and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about outside environments. Recently the children discovered a beetle and small lizard in their outdoor area and so there have been fresh activities and discussions around the habitat and eating habits of these creatures. This is great example of the Centre’s focus of encouraging learning activities that lead on from the interests of the children. For an obligation free tour of the centre, or even to just ask a few questions, please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

Community call out! To assist with current STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities, the Centre is looking for a donation of a pH water testing kit.

Sculptures on the Edge 2017 is now in its eighth year and this year is shaping up to be the biggest year yet and for the first time the event includes ‘Dinner with the Stars’ to be held on Sunday October 15. Sculptures on the Edge features around 40 sculptural pieces, created by over 30 artists, set amongst the stunning rainforest gardens at Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny. As the sun goes down guests will be able to wander the tranquil grounds whilst admiring the sculptures and enjoying canapes and beverages. This will be followed by a Thai banquet prepared by The Tamarind Head Chef Dan Jarrett, along

with matching wines. Kaye Leach, president of Arts Connect, will then host the evening, interviewing Elli Schlunke the artists throughout the night to hear their inspiration on creating their unique pieces. The artists include last year’s first prize winner Miles Allen, Montville based glass artist Tina Cooper, first time entrants Jules McRae and Charles McGuire, and Elli Schlunke from Kenilworth, the 2015 People’s Choice Award winner for her work Mammuthus. Peachester Rural Fire Station progress report

The Peachester Rural Fire Brigade Management Committee wishes to thank Peachester residents for their overwhelming and ongoing support for the construction of a fire station at The Old Dip site adjacent to the sports oval. We had over 600 positive responses in support of this site which is the only option that provides the community with reliable access to water for firefighting. We are pleased to report that after a long and often arduous journey, QFES has recently approved the commencement of the land acquisition process. The Public Trustee has commenced our Trustee Lease Application and last month contacted the Peachester History Committee (current trustees of the whole site) to obtain approval for the subdivision of the existing Trustee Lease to proceed. Once the Peachester History Committee grants permission, the application can be re-lodged with DNRM and any remaining statutory requirements can be addressed. We look forward to the Peachester History Committee's cooperation in this regard. Secretary Peachester Rural Fire Brigade

Definitely worried

It would appear our LNP State Member doesn’t read the local paper or listen to the voters’ comments, as I am still seeing plenty of signage featuring his photo, which leads me to think he is most definitely worried. We know of his history when in actual Government

and the mess he made of his various positions, not to mention the people who lost their jobs, courtesy of his party. He wrote a letter a couple of weeks back regarding the flashing lights at Glass House Mountains State School and wished the writer the very best of luck, saying that he had been advocating himself over the years and his efforts were falling on deaf ears. That caused me to sit up and pay attention. Why didn’t he get his mate, the then Minister for Transport Scott Emerson (remember him?) to do something? They had their photo taken at the Reed Street intersection at Glass House Mountains about two weeks before the last election, to announce that traffic lights would be installed, and in my mind, this was the only thing that got him through by the paltry 100 odd votes against the first time Labor bloke, Brent Hampstead. Apparently Scott Emerson didn't take any notice of his efforts then either. We do not need a bureaucrat in Glass House, we need a candidate who is willing to stand up, open his mouth and fight for us. I have not had much to do with Brent Hampstead, however, I believe we need a change and a new broom, someone who will stand up and open his mouth and be heard. Who knows, perhaps he will get the flashing lights flashing once more, or get a new system that will work without continual breakdowns. Remember, they are used at schools and children attend schools. Olive Hocking’s letter (GC&M News, September 20) says that farmers now face unchecked regrowth. This is not true, in fact regrowth older than 1989 is protected. Any clearing of remnant, old regrowth, riparian areas, or steep land requires explanation. You now have to apply for the right to clear. This annoys some, but most landowners know that land use reaches beyond the farm fence. As to the claim that Labor should create more National Parks, here’s a story. In 2000, following extensive research of Queensland biodiversity, the Labor Government, the timber industry, and the conservation movement signed the South East Qld Regional Forest Agreement. The timber industry based in State Forests was in decline, and these areas contained endangered species which deserved protection. The agreement meant that many State Forests were to transition, by 2025, to National Parks. Plantations were to increase supply of timber. It was a historic collaboration of stakeholders, carefully designed, such as we should expect of our governments. And, unbelievably, the LNP refused to support it.

Federally, Howard refused any funding. Much later the LNP with Environment Minister Andrew Powell (2012-15) reversed some of the original transitions. These included part of Beerwah State Forest, and Brigalow Forests, a large area of Queensland with about 1% protected. Let there be no doubt that the protected estate and all the amazing creatures which live there are safer under a Labor government. For the record Queensland now has almost 8% protected land with 70% of this in National and Conservation Parks, and 30% on private land as Nature Refuges and similar. Large areas are being jointly managed by Traditional Owners; these are not part of the 8%. Gillian Pechey Maleny

What an all round champion!

A great win to the Cowboys recently against the Parramatta Eels and I wonder how many people noticed Johnathan Thurston walking around the team room picking up the cans and rubbish and placing it in the garbage bin! While his former team mates sat, pondered and enjoyed a drink, Johnathan quietly took charge of the ‘housework’ – what a great guy and wonderful role model. May he enjoy an exceptional future and his talents be utilised and appreciated throughout the football arena (and beyond). Footy Fan Peachester

In the Garden Orchid spectacular

The Glasshouse Country Orchid Show last Friday and Saturday was a roaring success again. Despite the big dry, orchid fanciers from Gympie to Bribie displayed hundreds of blooming wonders. Every year we sponsor the cash prizes for the native orchids sections. The native orchids may not be as big and bold as some of the more extravagant breeds ... but they have a charm all of their own. Anyone can grow orchids – whether it’s a basic crucifix variety of one of the tough-as-nails Cymbidiums. And the best place to start is to come along to one of the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society meetings. They’re a friendly mob and will be more than willing to pass on their knowledge and experience... and maybe even help you out with some orchids to get you started. Their next meeting is October 12, 7.30pm at the RSL Hall in Glass House Mountains. New members are always welcome, so don’t be shy. Contact Robyn on 0427 138 168 for more details. They’ve also got a Facebook page (just search for ‘Glasshouse Country Orchid Society’).

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Where is the rain? With Sue Tanner Walking through the forest with a school group last week I was stunned to see how much leaf litter is on the ground, probably because of the extremely dry weather. Although we looked carefully we found very little fungi and even the giant worms seem to have gone to ground (or deeper underground), but the birds are still calling. We heard whip birds, cat birds, the whompoo and even the Paradise Rifle Bird. A very excited German tourist told us he had seen the male Rifle Bird displaying and the female nearby, only about an hour before we got there – how lucky was he! With school holidays here again (yes, already), the Discovery Centre is humming. Unfortunately the Friends still do not have a retail area, so our visitors, particularly from overseas, can’t get a souvenir of their time here. All in good time I suppose! The volunteers in the centre have been kept busy showing folk around the centre and sharing their knowledge about our beautiful rainforest. The Friends of Mary Cairncross AGM will be held in the meeting room on Saturday October 14 at 10am. Come a little earlier and share a coffee / tea and a chat. All the positions will be declared vacant and this year we really would like a secretary.

Jobs for the yard in October

• Look at top-dressing your lawn. A thin layer of top-dressing soil is best. Any hollow areas need the turf lifted, the soil added underneath, and then replace the turf. Don’t just pile it on top as it will kill the grass and encourage weeds. • Prune fruiting figs so that they shoot new growth – fruit is only produced on new growth. • Watch out for leaf miner in your citrus trees. Recent new growth is susceptible to this burrowing caterpillar. Spray every two to three weeks with a pest spray or white oil to control the problem. • Prune your poinsettias by two thirds to promote strong growth for next autumn. • Vines – flowering or fruiting – will be growing quickly, so keep training them so that they grow where you want them to (not the other way around). • Aphids will start attacking the new growth on roses and citrus. Treat them with a low toxic spray like Natrasoap • Dig lots of compost and manure into the spot where you will be planting your dahlias next month. • Tidy up your pawpaw tree by removing any fungal diseased leaves or fruits. This will help the developing fruits stay healthy as they ripen. Vegetables Plant asparagus, silverbeet, capsicum, pumpkin, choko, zucchini, shallots, cucumber, beans, eggplant, lettuce, okra, radish, spring onion, tomato, sweet corn and sweet potato. Flowers Plant alyssum, amaranthus, torenia, bedding begonia, gomphrena, cosmos, gerbera, marigold, petunia, coleus, portulaca, carnation, salvia, zinnia, aster, celosia, sunflower, calendula, californian poppy, chrysanthemum, dianthus, gloxinia, phlox and snapdragon.

What’s on for gardeners in October

• Elimbah-Caboolture Herb Club – October 4, 10am meeting at the Caboolture PCYC in Toovey Road, Caboolture. Hear a talk on mushroom plants. Call Ruth on 5496 7649 to find out more. • Native Plants Sunshine Coast – October 8. Due to limited space at our venue this will be a members only event. For further information contact Marie on 5494 9187 or npscevents@gmail.com. • Hibiscus Society, Sunshine Coast Branch – October 8, 10am for morning tea followed by a meeting and bloom competition at 10.30am at the Woombye School of Arts Hall, Woombye. For more information, call Audrey on 5476 2771 or Ted on 0407 440 999. • Faunawatch – October 11, 8am at Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens, Tanawha. Walk, survey wildlife, and learn about Faunawatch. Phone Paul on 0422 429 594 for details on how to get involved. • Glasshouse Country Orchid Society – October 12, 7.30pm at the RSL Hall in Glass House Mountains. New members are always welcome, so don’t be shy. Contact Robyn on 0427 138 168. • Peachester Garden Club – October 19, in the garden of Margaret Wallace, 9.30am. Please bring along a chair. Visitors always welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169.

The Spring Open Studio Trail

Eighteen Artists are welcoming visitors to Arts Connect’s popular Spring Open Studios Trail over two weekends: This one, the Queen’s Birthday long-weekend, Saturday to Monday, September 30 to October 2, and then the following weekend, Saturday October 7 and Sunday October 8. The Spring Trail presents a variety of fifteen studio/galleries, each with its own unique ambience. The road trip runs from Maleny and surrounds, through the towns scattered along the top of the Blackall Range, then on to Kiels Mountain and Nambour. Mother Nature will be in full bloom providing scented studio gardens and picturesque scenery along the way. Come and meet the artists! Some are award winning, some are self-taught, others are professionally trained, beginners and advanced. Listen to the stories behind their artworks or browse quietly through their studio/gallery displays; watch them demonstrate their professional skills and feel free to ask about their techniques, materials and inspirations. Many works of art will be available for sale – the perfect memento from meeting the artist and visiting their studio. These Spring Open Studio weekends are in conjunction with the ‘Sculpture on the Edge Exhibition’ at Spicers Tamarind Resort. For more information and studio maps visit www.artsconnectinc.com.au.

Maleny local, Ketakii Jewson-Brown, will be holding a photographic art exhibition at Sarah’s Unplugged for the months of October and November, with the opening night being on Thursday October 5 at 5.30pm. Photographer and poet Ketakii grew up in Maleny and the photographs featured in the exhibition are mostly portraits of Maleny locals with a few landscapes as well. Also in the exhibition is the portrait of her daughter Lalita that was a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2015, which has

Award winning photo ‘A look I've Never seen Before’ never been on display in Maleny previously. As a mother with serious time constraints, most of her work is focused on the simple things in life and investigates our relationship with the everyday and often mundane aspects of our lives.

Recollections Landsborough, eight artists, eight stories Starting in mid October, eight local artists will be offering a series of free or low cost workshops to be held at Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. Covering a variety of visual art techniques, each of the artists will conduct their workshops over the course of four weekends commencing Friday October 13. Some workshops will be suitable for adults only and others will also offer a separate children’s workshop. The project will kick off on Friday October 13 with ‘Multi-Coloured Reduction Linoprinting’ presented by Neville Field ($15, not suitable for kids). Casia Faron will host ‘Intuitive Mark Making’ on Saturday October 14 for children under 10, followed by an adults’ workshop Sunday (gold coin donation). The following week Glenis Grey will facilitate ‘Layers of Meaning’ on Friday October 20 which will be an introduction to text and collage ($20, ages 10+). Join Peter Hughes on Saturday October 21

(children under 10) and Sunday November 5 (adults) as he discusses ‘Connecting with Country’. On Sunday October 22 (children under 10) and Saturday November 4 (adults), Cholena Drew Hughes will guide attendees on the process of making ‘sun prints’ ($10) and on Friday October 27, Wayne Smith will demonstrate how to make ‘Memory Keepers’ (free, not suitable for under 12). Michele Deveze will present ‘Stories without Words’ on Saturday October 28 (children aged 6 - 10) and Sunday October 29 (adults) which will use found objects to create personal stories. The final workshop in the project will be presented by Joy Joyce on Friday November 3, entitled ‘Kookaburra Watercolour’, where students will learn basic watercolour skills painting a kookaburra ($15, ages 10+). Bookings are limited. For more information on the workshops, visit Landsborough Hall’s Facebook page or email reddoorart@bigpond.com.

Tall and spotty wedding theme When thinking of a theme for your wedding the first one that comes to mind may not be a tall furry animal, but Ryan Colbran and Yuka Kobayashi tied the knot a few months ago by celebrating their wedding at Australia Zoo with family and friends to coincide with World Giraffe Day! In the days leading up to their big day, Ryan and Yuka paid a visit to their favourite animals – Australia Zoo’s giraffe family, with Skye the gorgeous giraffe stealing a few kisses from the

bride (and even the groom)! Passionate about all things tall and spotty, Yuka even hand-stitched her ring bearer pillow to have Australia Zoo’s resident giraffes, Forrest and Rosie, sewed on. Ryan and Yuka are Australia Zoo annual pass holders who often visit and sit along the African Savannah to watch the herd of eight gorgeous giraffes eat, roam and play on the grassy plains – it’s true love.

Wedding Guide

Grab the girls for some Bridal Shower fun

by Sonia Clark The lead up to any wedding can be busy and, let’s face it, sometimes even a teeny bit stressful as you sort through seemingly endless to do lists. For many brides-to-be, a chance to really unwind (a glass or two of bubbles can help), relax and be pampered with a bunch of close girlfriends before the big day is an opportunity not to be missed. A bridal shower or ‘Hen’s Day’ devoted to fun and frivolities is a wonderful way to enjoy pre-wedding time with your nearest and dearest and have some indulgent ‘you time’. Around the Hinterland, we are blessed with a number of options that can suit all budgets and interests, so grab your ‘besties’ and let’s check out a couple of local suggestions. Everyone loves a good pampering session and you can just hear the squeals of joy at the thought of spending a day at the sumptuously appointed Spicers Tamarind Retreat. The retreat offers

Hen's high tea at The Orangery

a wonderful array of tailored spa menu and cuisine options, and you can choose a day of laughs, lunch and bubbly or time rejuvenating and revitalising. For local groups, a free shuttle bus service may also be available which gives everyone a chance to let their hair down. All treatments feature the signature ‘foot bath ritual’ designed to allow a blissful start to your experience. Treatments extend from magical 45 minute manicures all the way through to the ultimate decadence of a five hour spa retreat. Whatever you choose, you can truly immerse yourselves in the art of relaxation all set against a fabulously luxurious setting. If you are looking for something a little more traditional and have a bigger group to cater for, then a sit down high tea at The Orangery at Maleny is a popular option. With a Hamptons inspired decor and lashings of vintage chic, this venue certainly knows how to pull out all the stops for a sumptuous high tea. Using local ingredients their cakes ‘are to die for’ and they can easily cater to all size groups with a lovely selection of finger foods, sandwiches and cupcakes, all beautifully presented on traditional tiered stands. If you like the idea of eating off gorgeous vintage inspired crockery in an inviting and welcoming space surrounded by your ladies, then this is the spot for you. For something a little different, Emily Larkin from The Posy Co has been holding ‘Flower Crown’

workshops as a unique way to celebrate bridal showers. Held in collaboration with the talented artisan chefs at Henry & Co at Landsborough, it means that groups up to 20 can enjoy an interactive and hands-on two-hour workshop and also enjoy gorgeous grazing tables which include fresh and dried fruits, nuts, meats and antipasto, while being served with your drink of choice (or maybe BYO bottles of bubbles). The fun-filled workshops are generally held on the weekends and include the cost of all materials, fresh flowers, instructions, and advice on where to source supplies Grazing table at Henry & Co for making headpieces in the future. Beauty& Health&Wellbeing Wellbeing Oh baby!

Records have been broken at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) with a baby boom in August. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service experienced its greatest number of births in one month, welcoming 284 newborn babies at SCUH. August’s baby boom beat the health service’s previous monthly average of 225 births, and one of these bubs was Harrison Lack of Beerwah, who was born on August 22 at 8.08am weighing in at 8 pounds 10 ounces, his proud parents are Karlee Payton and Mic Lack. Nursing and Midwifery Service Director Cathy Styles said the baby boom kept staff on their toes. “Last month was extremely busy but our staff were amazing, providing quality care to the many new mothers and babies both in the hospital and once they returned home,” Ms Styles said. “We have such wonderful facilities at SCUH

Acupuncture

which is credit to all those who contributed to planning and design. “Our postnatal Extended Midwifery Service provides a home visiting service available to any new mum following the birth of her baby. “The home visits enable midwives to give Harrison Lack at ongoing personalised 3 weeks old feeding and other advice to new mums in the comfort of their own homes. “Each day we have three mobile services visiting new mothers and their babies in their homes, providing the right care and support to allow them to return home with confidence,” Ms Styles said.

Excess weight, however, can be a risk factor in developing a number of health conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and sleep apnoea. As the level of excess weight increases, so does the risk of developing these conditions. In addition, being overweight can hamper the ability to control or manage chronic disorders. Your local Amcal pharmacist can help you manage your weight with a free and personalised weight loss consultation. With no appointment necessary, and taking from only 10 minutes, this will include a BMI assessment, waist circumference measurement and blood pressure check. These measurements will help determine your suitability for weight loss products and the right program to suit your needs. These can include pharmacist-only weight loss medicines, which don’t require a prescription. Your local Amcal pharmacist will also monitor your progress and provide advice and support to help manage your health. Take control of your weight today.

Spring is a very important time in Chinese Medicine – it is represented by the wood element colour green and the liver; and it’s a time for planning and seeing things through. Most people will start exercise and weight loss programs, and eat more green leafy stuff! So how’s your liver? Here are a few signs your body isn’t happy: Unexplained weight gain that exercise and diet won’t budge – this is because your body has been storing toxins in your fat cells to protect you (liver/gallbladder imbalance, Traditional Chinese Medicine - TCM). Allergies (hayfever) – your liver has a huge part to play in your immune system, and antibodies meant to protect you can go haywire creating more histamine with more reactions to allergens (liver/large intestine imbalance TCM). Chronic fatigue or constant exhaustion and brainfog – sound familiar? An overworked liver just can't clear the toxic burden (liver/spleen imbalance TCM). Excessive sweating – have you noticed your body’s odour is more pungent since the weather started warming up? (Kidney/liver imbalance TCM). Acne or skin issues – excessive toxins in your body can change the delicate hormonal balance of our largest organ (liver/lung imbalance TCM). Please call us today for a personalised solution to suit you!

Peachester Village Festival

This year the Peachester State School P&C has focused on creating community events that create opportunities for the people of our broader community to come together through fun. The Peachester Village Festival on Saturday October 14 from 3pm to 8pm will transform the iconic Peachester Community Hall into a hub of fun and entertainment for the whole community. Peachester band, The Darlington Stripes will be playing and the gorgeous voice of Innesa, along with Peachester’s school band and choir, will delight. There will be Laser Quest, a jumping castle, dancing, magician performances and children’s activities, plus Peachester’s brand-new fire truck will be there. Many new market stalls with very creative products will delight the gift shopper. If you are new to the area, or have been here for years, come and share what Peachester is all about. Come along for a bite to eat, (they have a licenced bar), start your Christmas shopping, and be entertained. Don’t miss it! Please call Fiona Gray on 0424 112 916 for enquiries. You can also stay up to date by checking out the Facebook page ‘Peachester School Events’.

Meet Australian icon and author Judy Nunn

Avid readers will have the chance to join internationally acclaimed author Judy Nunn at The Events Centre, Caloundra from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday November 8. Judy is a household name in Australian culture thanks to her long and multifaceted career. After combining her internationally successful acting career with scriptwriting for television and radio, Judy became an author in the 90s. Judy will discuss her new fiction release, ‘Sanctuary’, a compelling novel in which compassion meets bigotry, hatred meets love and ultimately, despair meets hope on the windswept shores of Australia. With her trademark stage presence and exceptional storytelling skills, Judy will explore themes of love, hope and survival. Tickets are $25 per person and bookings are a must via council’s library website.

The next Outspoken event will feature Man Booker Prize winning author Richard Flanagan in conversation with Steven Lang at the Maleny State School on Thursday October 12 at 5.30 for a 6.30pm start. In his new novel, ‘First Person’, the celebrated author turns his attention to lies, crime and literature. Kif Kehlmann, a young and penniless writer, is contacted in the middle of the night by the notorious con man and corporate criminal, Siegfried Heidl. About to go to trial for defrauding the banks of $700 million, Heidl offers Kehlmann the job of ghostwriting his memoir. He has six weeks to write the book, for which he’ll be paid $10,000. But as the writing gets under way, Kehlmann begins to sense he is being corrupted. With the deadline drawing ever closer, he becomes unsure if he is ghostwriting a memoir, or if Heidl is rewriting him – his life, his future. All certainty falls away and Kif begins to wonder: who is Siegfried Heidl – and who is Kif Kehlmann? By turns compelling, comic and chilling, this is a haunting journey into the heart of our age. Richard Flanagan is the author of seven novels including ‘Death of a River Guide’, ‘Gould’s Book of Fish’ and the Man Booker Prize winning ‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’. He has also written widely as a journalist for both national and international papers, including the New York Times, The New Yorker, Quarterly Essay and The Monthly. He’s not afraid of courting controversy either, as in his essay ‘Gunns: Out of Control’, which exposed the underbelly of the Tasmanian wood-chipper and their planned mill in the Tamar Valley. Tickets are $20 or $15 for students and they are available from www.outspokenmaleny.com. This event is expected to sell out, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

From the churches The very windy day

Recently we had a really windy day. Anyway, on this day my kids’ trampoline at home was picked up and blown over the fence, down the front lawn, across the road and into bushland. An older gentleman apparently came to our door and asked my wife if we were missing a trampoline. She subsequently discovered that we were. So, after thanking the man, she walked across the road and tried to deal with our wayward trampoline but was unable to drag it out of the bush. My wife tried to phone me whilst holding on to the trampoline in the wind, but I was busy with work. She finally made contact with me and told me what had happened. I left work straight away to go and help her. All the while I was hoping that someone had stopped to assist while I was travelling. Thankfully when I arrived, there was a wonderful family from the neighbourhood who had seen GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Mike Turner Beerwah High Chaplain my wife’s situation just before I had arrived, and lent a hand. We hauled the broken tramp back into our yard. After we’d thanked the kind mum and her kids, I asked my wife how long she had been there waiting for someone to pull over and help. To my dismay she said that she had been waiting for nearly an hour and heaps of cars had driven past and no one had bothered to stop, except for that brilliant family who did, right at the end. So this is my message for this column: In life we have a choice as to how we treat others. We can either live our lives independently and selfishly not concerning ourselves with the needs of others… or… we can treat others as we would like to be treated. The Bible says in Luke 6.31 “Do to others as you would like them to do to you.” I think this is a fantastic way to think about how we relate to people.

Sport Bulldogs mark season successes

The Beerwah Bulldogs finished off their 2017 season with a celebration and presentation at their grounds. One of the day’s highlights was that three more junior players were added to the ‘Bulldog to the Bone’ team – which marks their 10 years membership milestone – and the players each received a jacket embroidered with a unique number. Our major award winners were as follows: Junior Player of the Year, Mitchell Jennings; Senior Player of the Year, Shea O’Keeffe; Most Improved Junior Player, Tyson Krause; Most Improved Senior player, Brodie Marshall; Coach of the Year, Stephen 'Ref' Hammill; Club Person of the Year,

Mitchell Jennings with President Lee Robertson

Andrew Pearce; Most Improved Referee, Damian Tomokino; and Referee of The Year, Jonty Corkin. The club is looking forward to a bigger and better 2018, and a big thanks goes to their major sponsors, Beerwah Hotel, Armesto’s Transport, Roy’s Earthmoving & Plant Hire, Barry Family Butchers, and R & R Hire. Thanks also to our team sponsors, BBOBS, Glasshouse Tiling, Coffee Club Beerwah, Bassett Barks, A Grade Maintenance, Mrs Brown’s Cafe, Matilda Fruit Barn, Andersen's Carpets Caloundra, Security Specialists, Subway Beerwah, and Show Respect. Also thanks to Foggy’s Earthmoving for sponsoring our First Aid Officers shirts.

Lee Robertson congratulates Brodie Marshall

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Jim King This week, social twilight bowls continues Wednesday night 6pm and next week the new competition commences. Saturday social bowls will again be held this Saturday at 1pm and JackAttack for junior players at 9.30am. Tuesday members' pairs saw John Kapetanic and Miles Allen take a win and the Jackpot of $156 remains open this week. The earlier time of 8am for an 8.30 start seems to have been very well received. Wednesday social twilight barefoot bowls was again well attended. Winners were Trevor and Pat Dunn, Ian and Min Chatterton, Christine and Paul, Steve and Tom, and triples by David Burgess, Jim King and Laurie Fawns. Touchers were Paul Kemp, Gary Darcy and Bev Heading. Lucky draw went to Christine, Ian and Ray Spry was delighted with his Mars Bar. Friday play, delayed by a welcome storm, was completed under lights just prior to the main storm and lightning show. Winners were Miles Allen, Kay Gesch, Don Ginns and Scott Alexander. Money Board went to Bryan Fripp and Jim King was present to win the Watson’s Garage $20 petrol. The finals of this competition will be played on Friday October 6. The club will be hosting Andrew Powell’s Charity Fundraiser on Saturday October 7. We will be expecting a big crowd for this event which raises funds for the Lung Foundation of Australia. It should be an exciting afternoon watching cricketers try their arms at a different type of bowling. Club members, who may be able to assist on the day with helping our guests with the technique of bowling or with catering for the afternoon tea, should contact Jim or Kay or leave a message at the club.

Men's and medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme An unfortunate fact of golfing life is that twice a year (September and February) our lovely greens are pounded by a million hollow knitting needles and roughed up by a stiff bristled, revolving broom. After sanding and fertilising, we have the putting greens from hell. The treatment is called “greens renovation”! Despite this process, last Wednesday's Totalspan Garages' Blue Marker Challenge saw some remarkably good scores returned. In A grade, two 69s led, with John Runge beating Kevin Norton on a countback. Good to see these two back in the winner's circle again. In B grade, countback was again used to split Jeff Wilson and Peter Connor, both shot 71. Jeff got the nod. Not to be outdone, C grade also finished in a tie with Robert Goymer and John Leitch both returning 69s. Robert won the cigar. NTPs: 2 - Kev Norton, 5 - Charlie Bevan, 16 - Jo Malone, 18 - Doug Young. The outstanding result of the week went to Col Blundell / Les Ramage who won Saturday's two ball aggregate Stableford with 80 points. Robbie and Chris Russell missed out by a mere point. Perhaps we should leave the greens heavily sanded all the time! NTPs: 2 - Cam Wallace, 5 - Craig Johnson, 16 Daniel Hick, and 18 - Doug Young. Col Baker continued his recent good form by combining with Barb Drury to win Saturday's mixed Stableford on 74 points. Runners up were Corey Wally / Pauline Masen, a point behind. NTPs: 2 - Col Penney, 5 - Geoff Williamson, 16 Jo Malone, and 18 - Phil Sell. Interestingly, Doug Young and Jo Malone recorded two NTPs during the week on the 18th and 16th respectively.

Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Our Friendship Day was very well attended on Thursday. A variety of activities as well as Golf, Ricochet and Association were played. Popular was ‘Hurry, scurry’ and a game involving bottles, ably supervised by Giani, Vince and Val Carbery’s grandson. Giani was so good at golf that it might be the beginnings of a junior league with other clubs – shades of his grandparents. Many players from other clubs attended. Caloundra, Coolum, Headland Buderim and Nambour all joined in the fun of the day. It was great to see mid-nonagenarian Bill Bray from Nambour. Pat Mann took out the raffle. To all accounts it was a fun day and anticipation is high for another. The Fitchen Trophy was played on Saturday in beautiful conditions. Lew and Barbara Fitchen, who were members of Maleny, donated the trophy which Lew made. The morning session began badly for Maleny with Ken and Donna 7 being roundly defeated by Cliff and Theo 26. Both Nambour players played fine innings and it was a deserved result. It went downhill for Nambour from there. Nick and Ted defeated Shirley and Eileen 22 - 11, Vince and Kath 19 outplayed Ross and Peter M 13, while Sarah and Helen had a good win against Miggy and Peter S 15 - 9. Going into the break it was Maleny 3 games to 1. In the afternoon, the results split on lawn 2 with Vince and Nick going down to Shirley and Theo 15 - 18, despite Nick’s potentially brilliant play (all that was missing was the roquet), while Ted and Donna got up 16 - 12. Ted’s 12 break was the best of the day. This left lawn 1 as the decider. Ken and Kath made a last minute save to win 16 - 15 against Miggy and Ross. Sarah and Sally played a brilliant game to defeat Eileen and Priscilla 13 - 11. Both games could have gone either way on the last turn. Well done all players. The play was good, the company was good, the food was good. Great day. Thanks for coming, Nambour. Unfortunately, there is only one winner’s space available on the trophy per annum. Maleny won 6 games to 2. First win in five years. We play again next year at Nambour.

A woman went to the doctor's office, where she was seen by a young, new doctor. After about four minutes in the examination room, the doctor told her she was pregnant. She burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story. After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 You are ready this week to impulsively take a chance to expand your life and create that breakthrough! Yes, it’s good to take a risk, even to help somebody else. The planet Uranus creates unexpected levels of excitement. Mercury, entering Libra now, sees you wandering through shops buying classic art, music and special jewellery items. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 Perhaps you may feel that changes are disruptive but this is the week to face them with courage and you will forge a new path. As one door closes, another door opens. The weekend should see educational, travel and action on legal concerns. All are favoured if you are determined and back it up with everyone’s skill and then you will succeed. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 This is the week to ignore any disagreements between family members and then you can avoid all the bad moods and cold shoulders that go with that. Make sure your commitments have structure and proper rules. Uranus will push you forward to handle joint money matters. Mercury, entering Libra, means interactive harmonious words of love. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Some setbacks bring you down to earth with a thud. However, all this means is a cue to rethink your strategies. What starts out looking negative could have a silver lining, so instead of being discouraged you and your partner, or roommate, can look to the timing of the program that went astray. Be positive and accept the need for some change.

Week Beginning 27/09/17

The doctor marched down the hallway to the back where the first doctor was and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs Terry is 59 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?" The new doctor continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said: "Does she still have the hiccups?"

LEO July 23 - August 22 From last month you are now heading into many chances to expand a big life affair. Over the next few weeks you may find a sudden exciting and potentially life changing situation! Now that Pluto moves forward again it tests your efforts in overdoing your work, which affects your health. There is an irresistible urge to over indulge at times. Be careful. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 During this week the Capricorn Moon emphasises a responsible attitude which is right in your element. Keep your schedules in mind and don’t go astray in wild new directions. Positive thinking and moving straight forward generates luck energies around you. Some obligations come up, but still leave plenty of time for meaningful connections. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 You are coming out from feeling under the weather or in a far too self-critical mood. Avoid escaping into worries and isolation, look for constructive paths forward. Mercury, entering your sign this week, will give you a fresh new start to communicate with your best friend and roll the dice on freedom and expansion. There’s a whole lot to say! SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Plans can be upturned by people changing their minds. Avoid the negative and see that most changes can still work for the better. Harness the results of positive thinking and make advantageous use of your connections and associates. Make an effort to right any past wrongs. It may be fun to have an infatuation for someone you have just met.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 This is your best week to take a chance on a big breakthrough. You don’t have to keep looking as one will suddenly appear. Then life can expand in a big way if you follow your dream and chase lucky changes. Pluto moving forward in your financial affairs means you have to be accountable in your bookkeeping and perhaps revise your resources. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Where business is concerned timing is essential and you are getting ready to resolve things with people around you with an ambivalent non-caring attitude. With a supportive Moon in your sign, allow your intuition to find the best way to what you would like. You achieve the best success by formulating a long range program for real estate. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 From the last August Eclipse you now have a six month’s cycle to achieve your greatest success in jointly held money and property. There are some private deals that may be worth your interest. Take a good look at your potentials and of course, keep on restoring your health and vitality. Pluto moving forward releases you from some inherited karma now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You are moving into a space where you see someone as absolutely perfect, and then elsewhere you see others falling disappointingly short of your ideals. Make allowances for any shortcomings, but keep a space to yourself for you and any partner. This month closes with an emphasis in teamwork with your relationship. Be willing to lend some support.
