Hi Everyone...

Well it's official - the Christmas season is now on. For me it kicked off in Beerburrum last weekend, as you can see from this week’s front cover we headed along to our first Christmas Party.

You might be thinking that GC&M News has been banging on about Christmas for weeks, which is true, but until I get my first sighting of 'Santa' in his red suit I don’t really feel it.

So I am glad that the Beerburrum Community Christmas party took place quite early.

Now it’s OK for us to put the rum balls, bowl of Roses chocolates and shortbreads out for morning tea every day until December 25!

As always, we are keen to include as many of your photos as possible taken at festive events locally in the upcoming editions.

Christmas variety concert in the Hills

The final 2019 concert in the St George’s in the Hills series will be a Christmas variety concert at St George’s Anglican Church this Saturday, November 30 at 2pm. Featuring Kim Kirkman, tickets are $20 and include afternoon tea, which will be served following the concert.

Local News Proposed quarry site bought by council A 65 hectare parcel of bushland in Landsborough has been purchased by Sunshine Coast Council recently to create a new environmental reserve.

The land, situated between Hapgood Road and the Bruce Highway, was the subject of a 2017 application by Shadforth Industries Pty Ltd to turn the site, known as Alfs Hill, into a large quarry.

The application was rejected by the council in May 2018 on a number of grounds including impacts to vegetation, fauna, hydrology and visual amenity.

Shadforth Industries appealed the refusal to the Planning and Environment Court but in an unexplained move, lawyers for Shadforth recently discontinued the proceedings, abandoning their plans for establishing the quarry.

It appears the council and Shadforth had been negotiating behind the scenes before this happened, as the May 23, 2019 ordinary meeting of council included an agenda item - Proposed land acquisition Landsborough - that was tabled and taken behind closed doors into a confidential session.

For the discussions and subsequent decision, Mayor Mark Jamieson withdrew from the chamber declaring a personal interest due to electoral donations received from a range of Shadforth companies, totalling $47,339.89.

A council spokesperson confirmed that the purchase was approved in the May confidential agenda session and council bought the property

for $1.1 million through the environment levy land acquisition program.

“This property is environmentally significant and strategically located adjacent to part of the Glass House Mountains National Park, which is why council sought to acquire the site,” the spokesperson said.

As it is surrounded by state forest and national park, protecting the forests, habitats and wildlife living there was a priority for the council.

“This acquisition by council provides greater certainty around the future use of the site for environmental purposes and contributes to the protection of matters of national, state and local environmental significance including Commonwealth-listed fauna species such as the vulnerable koala and associated habitat,” the spokesperson said.

“This acquisition supports the protection of the surrounding area’s landscape and character by contributing to the green frame of the future Beerwah East major development area and provides opportunities to plan for and deliver complementary nature-based recreational activities such as trails and supporting infrastructure.”

The environment levy is a ratepayer contribution to protecting and conserving our special places across the Sunshine Coast and has contributed to the acquisition of more than 3,590 hectares of land since the early 1990s.

Beerwah Homemaker Centre

Call for an obligation free consultation

The Beerwah Homemaker Centre proposal – with a Coles supermarket, McDonald’s, petrol station, retail showroom, hardware/nursery, gym, bulky goods homemaker centre and a zone for service/ light industry development on 16.5 hectares on the southern corner of Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way in Beerwah – has been a hot topic of discussion around the region.

“Yes I’m loving the idea of development, shops, etc going in. The place is growing, homes are going up everywhere. So it’s a need - bring it on.”

“It will definitely bring more attention to Beerwah and only grow the area even more! Will also save us all the trip to shop further away at places like Sunshine Plaza, Caloundra and Caboolture.”

Some had a bet each way “All for it if they can get that intersection right.”

The topic was also one for letter writers, including this from Joan Tucker: So many of the "Benefits to the Beerwah Community" as outlined in the proposal by the Coles Group simply do not stack up.

A zoning change to accommodate this proposal will result in less available industrial land while owners of land in the current commercial precinct will be denied the opportunity to develop the potential of their investment.

As for additional jobs created by the proposed development. Our local supermarkets would not be able to retain their current level of staffing once Coles captures the predicted 21.4% of

the market. Job cuts within the established supermarkets would have to be factored in when forecasting increased local employment if the Coles proposal were to go ahead.

Furthermore, who in this community would want to see Beerwah township split into two commercial precincts and divided by a busy road.

Joan Tucker Glass House Mountains The process will take time to work through the mechanisms of Sunshine Coast Council.

As Cr Rick Baberowski said in GC&M News last week, there won’t be any decisions for 6-12 months and the community will have the opportunity to have their say through the official submissions process.

Clive Waring Candidate for Division 5 Clive is a seventh generation Australian but was educated in England.

He and his wife Elizabeth, a nurse at Selangor Hospital in Nambour, built a carbon-positive home in Maleny 10 years ago and are both passionate about the hinterland lifestyle.

Clive has a 40-year background in the photography industry, operating studios in Sydney, Brisbane, London and Hamburg.

“During the 1990s, I was a consultant for Polaroid and responsible for the Queensland Department of Transport, Department of Health and Queensland Police, which provided valuable knowledge of government purchase procedures,” Clive said.

“In the late 1990s I established a company for import and distribution from UK photographic manufacturers.”

During the past 17 years Clive has travelled across North America and Europe as the editor for 'Silvershotz' magazine. His tenure has just finished.

“I describe myself as a workaholic with a lot of energy to burn, someone who has to have major life goals to pursue and accomplish.

“Travelling the world on business for 25 years heightens my awareness of the destruction of the planet and just how special the Sunshine Coast hinterland biosphere is, and it must be protected at all costs”.

Clive has recently joined a network of Australian scientists and researchers on energy security, climate change minimisation techniques, integration of alternative energy sources, waste recycling innovations, food production

(commercial and home) sustainability and minimising electromagnetic radiation from communication towers.

"The combination of addressing all these issues provides a healthier lifestyle and local council can implement smarter and safer procedures," Clive said.

“I look forward to joining a progressive council to provide strategic direction, while delivering infrastructure and supporting the community’s needs.

“I am apolitical, which means I am not interested in politics but I am optimistic about the efficiency of local government as a strong organisation that delivers exceptional services to the community.

“As an Independent candidate I don't have ties to a traditional party group, which means I can be flexible and act in the best interests of the electorate.

“I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of Cr Jenny McKay during her 20-year tenure of Division 5.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Big thumbs up to Rotary’s generosity Christmas came early last week for ten local community groups when the Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains presented almost $10,000 from its community grants program for 2019 at the Beerwah Hotel.

The Rotary Club advertised in September for notfor-profit community groups that operate in the Glasshouse Country region to apply for grants of up to $1,000 for a specific purpose that would benefit the local community.

Ian Hope, from the Rotary Club, said that the program had generated a lot of interest and that they were pleased to be able to assist in funding a broad range of projects.

On Monday, November 18 representatives from the successful community groups came to the club’s dinner meeting for the official presentation of funds and a 2019 Rotary Calendar.

The funds went to Mooloolah Hall for a professionally constructed community noticeboard outside the hall; Landsborough Scouts to buy camping equipment so Joeys, Cubs and Rovers can camp at the same time; Morris House to put towards air conditioning the small office used for meetings and appointments; Landsborough Community Kindy and Landsborough Love Where We Live towards creating websites; Beerwah Sportsground to build

a barbeque shelter; Tibro’s Netball Club for an internal ceiling in the club house; Beerburrum State School P&C for its Stephanie Alexander garden; Glass House Mountains State School P&C to buy 20 new trestle tables; and the War On Waste Glasshouse Country for current recycling projects.

The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains raises about $25,000 each year through a number of initiatives including car park duties at Australia Zoo during peak events and doing barbeques at local community events such as the Beerwah Charity Sports Day and at the regular community barbeques at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre.

Business News Introducing - Dr Siobhan Larkin Beerwah Dental welcomed a new dentist, Dr Siobhan Larkin, to their team earlier this month.

Siobhan said she enjoys all areas of dentistry and has a particular knack to support patients who may experience some anxiety when visiting the dentist.

Originally from Port Stephens in NSW, Siobhan completed her qualifications at Charles Sturt University, and now calls the Sunshine Coast home.

Before joining the experienced team at Beerwah Dental, Siobhan worked as a dentist with the Australian Defence Force Army in Brisbane and the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Dubbo. Siobhan says her experience with the flying doctors was very valuable.

“It was a very rewarding experience, as the people have very limited access to services in these remote locations,” she said.

“It was great to be able to help the people that need it most.”

She would frequently fly to remote locations such as Lightening Ridge and Bourke to provide essential dental services.

It was in this role that she encountered many people who were apprehensive about visiting the dentist and, for many, it was their first time seeing one.

Siobhan said being able to help people through this anxiety was the most rewarding experience and she enjoys being a gentle and caring dentist.

Siobhan enjoys all areas of dentistry having worked with patients from age three right through to patients in their 90s.

She’s looking forward to continuing to contribute to a wonderful practice and helping locals with their dental needs.

Maleny yoghurt finalist in national awards It’s a ‘legendairy’ nomination for local business Maleny Cheese, named earlier this month as finalists in the Australian Grand Dairy Awards 2020 for their mouth-watering product Maleny Gourmet Yoghurt Apple and Cinnamon.

Sara Bucher, of Maleny Cheese, said they were excited to be named as one of three finalists in the national awards, particularly given competition across the nation was fierce.

“It’s a credit to our team and also to our wonderful suppliers - Helen and Bruce Page, and John and Emma Ruddle of Ruddle Dairy - who are the basis for our success,” Sara said.

Sara and husband Markus also use their own dairy cows to supply the Maleny Cheese Factory.

This isn’t the first time Maleny Cheese has been named as a finalist in the awards, having won the Champion Flavoured Yoghurt category in 2009 and 2014.

Sara said that in order to be named as a finalist in the awards, they first have to go through rigorous judging and win gold in qualifying competitions.

“To be named in the top three out of close to 100 entrants really is extraordinary,” she said.

This year Maleny Dairies are also finalists with their Maleny Dairies Farmers Choice Guernsey Non Homogenised Full Cream Milk and Kenilworth Dairies for their amazing Chocolate Mousse.

Community News Glass House District Park upgrade continues

Mystery bus trip Contributed by Russell Modlin Glasshouse Christian College recently ran its third annual overnight mystery bus tour for year 12 students after the college formal. Sunrise at Mt Cootha at 5am The tour is run as an alternative to the after parties that sometimes happen following a formal and is a drug and alcohol-free event.

This year a huge majority of the school’s year 12 students chose to take the bus with 42 students enjoying a great night of good, clean fun.

First stop was at Game Over on the Gold Coast where students enjoyed two hours of unlimited access to indoor karting, laser tag and climbing walls.

The second stop was the Pancake Manor in Brisbane for an early morning feed followed by a trip to Mt Cootha to see the sunrise. The last stop was a bacon and egg breakfast (with lots of coffee) held at Settlement Cove in Redcliffe.

Throughout the night there were games and competitions with almost $1,500 in prizes donated by local businesses.

Work on the newest stages of the district park in Glass House Mountains continues to power along, with the fast approaching Christmas holidays adding extra impetus for Sunshine Coast Council to complete the schedule.

Even though the newest playground structures are in place there is a backlog in getting equipment professionally inspected and certified to meet all Australian safety standards.

According to Cr Rick Baberowski this may, unfortunately, mean that the new play equipment will not be open on day one of the school holidays.

“But I’m sure the wait won’t be too much for local families to enjoy the latest play area,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The fantastic existing structures remain open and available, as well as a whole lot of other new facilities in the park … such as walking paths, a new picnic shelter and improvements to the fenced dog park.”

Entry statements including eye-catching public art will also be installed at a number of entrances.

“Once the work is completed, we’ll have an official opening and then let the community utilise the space,” Cr Baberowski said.

“This will inform us of any tweaking that will be needed and let the site settle in before we embark on the next stage of developments.”

Carer friendly business awards By Sonia Clark

Members of the Beerwah Carers group have helped two Sunshine Coast businesses win commendation awards from Carers Queensland for providing outstanding service in the annual Carer Friendly Business Awards held recently during National Carers Week.

Beerwah Carers group member Carolyn Robertson nominated I Age Well, with the business director Tanya Dave accepting the Great Business Commendation award. Margaret Thompson nominated Ozcare Currimundi’s dementia advisor Pauline Hope, who received the Great Employee Commendation award.

Margaret said she nominated Pauline because of the way she had tirelessly helped her navigate the challenges of dealing with a loved one with dementia.

“Pauline was just incredible - giving practical advice, assistance and support," Margaret said.

“I felt like I had someone I could finally talk to who understood what I was going through as a carer.

“It was very comforting to know there was someone I could just call up when I needed to and that she was always there to help,” Margaret said.

The Beerwah Carers group meets on the first Friday of each month from 10am-12noon at Beerwah Library.

The next meeting will be Friday, February 7 and anyone who cares for others in any capacity is welcome to attend.

Disaster management sub-group forms

A new local disaster management community sub group has been established in the Mooloolah/ Eudlo area and it needs a volunteer secretary to join it.

While the Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) will still be responsible for maintaining the overall regional disaster management plan, the re-established Mooloolah/Eudlo community sub group, with its local knowledge, will act in the local community’s interests to prepare for and, wherever and whenever possible in the initial stages, respond to a major incident or natural disaster.

Jason Carroll has been appointed the new coordinator who will oversee the Mooloolah Valley/Eudlo/Diamond Valley and Glenview area.

Currently the group has Judi Brown as its deputy and Ryan Cornett as communications officer. Jason said that once the group was fully established it would meet four times a year, with a full activation of the disaster plan once a year.

Four brothers - Stan, Ernest, William and Albert Pattemore - constructed Fairview, a sturdy farmhouse (also now known as Pattemore House) from white beech timber in 1907 for their parents, Emily and JR Pattemore.

The family came to Maleny in 1906 from Central Tilba, where Emily and JR operated both a butchery and a property called Myrtle Vale.

They raised their four sons and three daughters there and, according to family folklore, the 1902 drought was so severe that the Pattemore family decided to move to a farming area with more reliable rainfall.

Bill and Stan heard of the lush Blackall Range in Queensland, then being promoted for its dairying opportunities. By 1906 they were cutting timber there and sawmilling at Maleny in partnership with Maleny fruit grower ET Thynne, as Thynne and Pattemore.

"While we are in the initial set-up stage there will also be a requirement to meet regularly to fully establish the group."

The purpose of the Mooloolah/Eudlo local disaster management community sub group is to establish a core group of people within the local community who possess the local knowledge and expertise to ensure that disaster management and disaster operations within the local area are managed.

Bill and Stan were joined by their brothers Ernest and Albert in 1907 and together they built Fairview. The brothers pit-sawed the timber on the property, hand planed it and made six inch tongue and groove boards with a single beading.

Fairview is significant as one of the few remaining buildings constructed in this way.

We also learned a great deal about the vast services provided by Sunshine Coast Libraries from our guest speaker Patricia Stahl. Most of our members already use the library but were unaware, like many local people, of what is on offer to us all. They even provide free lessons to assist members to learn more about using their services.

Our last get together for the year will be our Christmas party on Wednesday, December 4, which will be held at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11am. This will include Secret Santa, a trading table with lots of Christmas goodies, raffles and a buffet lunch. Anyone interested in joining us would be most welcome. Lions busy year draws to a close

Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions Club recently held its final dinner meeting for 2019, which saw another new member, Col Baker, inducted into the world of Lionism by zone chairman Chris Sang. In welcoming Col, Chris pointed out that joining the world’s largest service organisation provided the opportunity to help your fellow man in times of need.

Lions auxiliary chair Gail Farren reported on the donation of $300 worth of groceries to The Shack, a charitable organisation at Nambour.

The ladies are also assisting with Trees of Hope, involving filling bags with essential items for the homeless and disadvantaged. The ladies also handled the catering for the recent RSL Remembrance Day service.

Members of the Mooloolah Valley Lions Club, who judged the entries, said all of the work was of a high standard. However, in all competitions there has to be a winner, which was Kyra Montana Stewart.

Kyra’s quote on what peace means to her was: “We all live in one world with love and humour”.

Second prize went to Grace Duce, who received a highly commended certificate. Both students were presented with a book voucher. Kyra’s painting will now proceed to the next stage of judging.

UnitingCare Australia and Target Beerwah recently launched their annual Christmas Appeal to raise funds to provide emergency relief and support to thousands of people doing it tough this Christmas.

The appeal calls on all Queenslanders to support their community this festive season by buying a Christmas Appeal bauble from their local Target store.

The simple act of buying a $1 bauble can make an incredible difference to Queenslanders in need, helping to reduce the financial strain to allow more people to experience the joy of Christmas.

Christmas can be a difficult time of the year, with many people facing financial hardship and needing support with daily necessities such as food, shelter and basic living costs.

UnitingCare Queensland group executive of child and family services Brent McCracken said this year it was hoped the appeal would raise $100,000 to support individuals and families experiencing hardship across the state.

“The appeal encourages Queenslanders to be there for someone”, he said.

“We’re incredibly grateful for all of the donations we receive through this appeal, with 100% of all Target Christmas Appeal contributions going directly to people in need.

The Target Christmas Appeal runs until Christmas Eve on Tuesday, December 24.

When is a plum pudding a trophy?

By Lea Parkes Since expanding the circulation of Glasshouse County News to include Maleny, the Maleny Bowls Club has become a regular sporting contributor to the newspaper.

Over the past few years I noticed that around mid-October there was always a special acknowledgement to Kay Gesch who had done a great job in rallying the troops to make plum puddings for the major bowls fundraiser coming up early in November.

Not being an avid sports fan but someone who definitely has a passing interest in Christmas pudding, it got me wondering what this was all about.

Thanks to the research and interest of Maleny local Linda Fawkes, I can confirm that plum puddings have been making an annual appearance on the trophy table at Maleny Bowls Club for more than 30 years for what is now known as Plum Pudding Day. In the club’s 40th report dated October 6, 1986, Linda found the following quote: “We all entered in to the fun of a ‘Plum Pudding Day’, the men agreed it was a great idea” and the report was signed by Enid Neill, president, ladies section.

Even though there was some concern raised in the 1988 report that you can get padding after too much pudding tasting, the day has clearly continued to be popular.

“Preparing for the day is quite a big job as we need approximately 20 plum puddings for game prizes, eight small puddings for the lucky table draw at lunch, as well as six puddings to serve as part of luncheon," Graeme said.

“Plus we also take orders including gluten-free puddings to sell.

“All the cooking is done by members past and present, young and old, which has involved around 20 people over the past couple of years.

“Myth and legends speak of a clubhouse cookup sharing secrets and cooking up to a 100 puddings," he said.

Any puddings not sold are used as a catering option for local groups who hold Christmas parties at the club as well as for visiting social bowls groups, served with some Maleny Dairies custard and cream.

If you would like to see why these plum puddings are so popular here is the recipe supplied to Linda by Fay Peterson.

Plum Pudding Day pudding

Ingredients 700g mixed fruit 2 cups chopped dates 2 cups brown sugar 2 tablespoons plum jam 125g butter 2 cups water 4 teaspoons bicarb soda 4 cups plain flour 1 dessertspoon mixed spice 1 cup rum Method Place first six ingredients into saucepan and simmer until syrupy.

Remove from heat, add bicarb soda, stir well and allow to cool.

When cool add sifted plain flour, mixed spice and rum. Stir well.

Spoon into a steamer leaving at least 3cm space at the top.

Cover with a steamer lid or kitchen paper and tie securely around the rim of the bowl.

Place steamer into large pot filled with boiling water and steam 3½-4 hours for large pudding, 2½ hours for medium pudding (depending on size), and up to 45 minutes for small. Place puddings on to upturned saucer on the bottom of the pot to stop them sticking to the basin base. Check water level in saucepan regularly and if necessary top up with boiling water.

When cooked remove pudding from bowl allow to become cold and wrap in foil and store in the fridge. This mixture makes one or two medium and 3-4 smaller puddings.

PS. Add an extra 60g of butter if you wish

You Said It Counting the scientists

In reply to Fred Gee (GC&M News, November 13), the statement I made is based on a study

by Anderegg et al 2010. In that study it was determined that 97-98% of the 200 mostpublished climate scientists supported the International Panel on Climate Change in saying that recent global warming has been mostly caused by human activities.

Another study asked nearly 2,000 scientists a series of questions (including ones about the Sun) and got similar results (Verheggen 2014).

Interestingly, in their replies, those who said that human influence on climate change was insignificant also reported having had the most media coverage.

Perhaps that helps explain why some of the public do not realise the high number of scientists who actually agree that the planet is warming dangerously and that humans are causing it.

And please note - I am not arguing because I want to be right. I am deeply saddened by the crisis we are facing and wish we could just get on with solutions.

Community engagement

I refer to the community's rightful concerns and ongoing reports relating to the Sunshine Coast Council's approach to community engagement, transparency and accountability.

Becoming a council that operates in a transparent manner is well beyond simply live-streaming council chamber debates and decision-making.

The fact of the matter is that for each and every decision made, significant planning, work and recommendations are developed over months and sometimes years. Additionally, many decisions and projects are part of a broader departmental strategy and actually don't even make it to the chamber floor for voting.

In leading the way on transparency we need to search for a best practice model and collaborate with our community to develop a council that is inclusive and truly transparent.

For incoming councillors this means understanding the true role of community engagement and its ability to shape the future while also reducing scope creep, costs and issues that impact on the successful operations of council.

Community or stakeholder engagement is not a fluffy waste of time. It is a risk management tool that, when used properly, helps us to truly capitalise on opportunity and build decisions where the community feels and is empowered and a key part of the solution.

model of community engagement. However, I believe this model is outdated. I have consistently seen this model manipulated in government to justify an "inform" approach to community engagement rather than "consult". I would like to see our council move towards a hybrid model of community engagement that also capitalises on co-design and approaches implemented by engagement specialists and leaders such as Twyfords and 2ndRoad.

If elected, I will be advocating for a new model of true engagement being designed in collaboration with the community and this model integrated with the way our council does business on a dayto-day basis.

Goodnight sweet prince

On November 9, our cat, a ragdoll, was ambushed on our property, and killed by dogs belonging to a neighbour.

We are devastated by the brutal death of our cat and our hearts go out to others who have suffered and who are suffering the terrible results of others irresponsible dog ownership.

It is hard for us to understand how dog owners that have multiple dogs can leave them for long periods of time in the back yard without supervision or any form of enrichment such as bones or toys and then seldom, if ever, walk them despite there being a dog park just a five minute walk away.

For the past two years we have been subjected to three dogs digging under our fence and fighting with each other, as well as their uncontrolled barking.

The council has been assisting us in dealing with this matter and in return, we have supplied them with detailed records that we hope will enable them to take the strongest action possible under the current laws regarding animal management.

However, council representatives can only do so much.

People who fail to look after their dogs appropriately may, wittingly or unwittingly, make monsters out of otherwise decent animals.

Irresponsible pet owners are completely out of touch with community expectations, that where we reside, must be peaceful and safe.

The needs of the selfish few do not outweigh the needs of the many.

Climate change debate

I'm reading a lot of information about our climate and whether we are changing it. My opinion vacillates from one viewpoint to the next, depending on which article I'm reading. Perhaps if we gave more credence to ex-prime minister expert Tony Abbott (“Climate change is crap”) and current Prime Minister optimist Scott Morrison (“Coal is beautiful”) we could all stop worrying and get on with our lives.

Shopping centres have one aim – to destroy/ eliminate the little shops that are already struggling and to have a monopoly all for themselves.

There is absolutely NO NEED for another centre, particularly where it is proposed. This corner is already very busy at any time being a major four-way intersection. And with more traffic from the centre, what will it be like coming in and coming out?

We came to Australia almost 50 years ago and we have seen so much change since and many not for the better.

There used to be so many little shops here and there and not many selling the same items.

Today in the centres, many shops have the same products for sale and so many are empty, or with very few clientele.

And don’t get me started about parking … this is another headache subject.

It does not make any sense. Wake up Australia. Do not imitate the world. Stay the way YOU WERE. We have a story in France about a toad who wants to be as big as a bull, so he puffs himself up and up and up and … explodes and dies.

Australia, do not be like that toad. Just be yourself and let the rest of the world struggle to stay alive.

Beerwah is growing without another centre. There are shops in Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum and there is also already a development approval in Glass House Mountains for a shopping centre.

What about all those … do they count in your agenda?

Please assess the development not in dollars but in objectivity and keep in mind the little businesses that have kept Australia going for so long – as someone called them “the little battlers”. We/you need them.

Outdoor classroom day and exciting new playground plans Glasshouse Early Education Centre participated in the annual Outdoor Classroom Day held on Thursday, November 7. This was a great opportunity for educators to take the children's learning outdoors for the day and see what magic happened.

Centre coordinator Dee Shaw said when children are given the time and space to engage in learning environments in the great outdoors, it can have positive impacts across all aspects of their learning and development. She said with sustained outdoor play, educators see improvements in self-regulation, a sense of wellbeing, pure joy with connecting to nature, peer groups excited to learn with a shared vision and children who can feel inhibited by an indoor curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment.

“When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors,” Dee said.

“Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.

“Here at the centre we believe that having our children out and about in nature, both at the centre and in the community, is amazing for their mind, body and soul.”

Some of the highlights of the day included science exploration with shaving foam and colours, which the children loved! Dee said educators posed some

scientific questions such as how to mix the colours in the shaving foam and what foam feels like (soft, squishy). They extended their research by adding ice to the mix, observing how the shaving foam colour would go on the ice bricks.

The children then added natural leaves and paint to their science experiment to take their learning and creativity to the next level.

Meanwhile, some other friends explored transferring water from one place to another, with the educators extending the children's learning by asking "how will we transfer the water from the trough to the wheelbarrow?".

“We loved seeing the children working collaboratively as a team to problem solve how to achieve their shared vision and have a fun time as they did so,” Dee said.

“It was a really fun day for all of us!”

Glasshouse Early Education Centre is excited to announce that its long-awaited playground renovations will be taking place over the coming weeks. This will be a complete re-naturalisation of the centre's outdoor learning spaces to embrace nature play teaching and holistic philosophy

for children's learning.

Dee said she was looking forward to bringing back the excitement of ‘risky' play and challenge to play spaces, which seem to have disappeared from early learning centres over the past decade. Risky play involves children experimenting and pushing themselves to figure out what will happen, without knowing the exact outcome. If children don’t go far enough with their play, it can get boring and if they go too far, it gets too scary.

Dee said it was important that children were given the trust and opportunity to test out their environments and determine what they were comfortable with. When children engage in play, they are actually researching how the world around them works, how their body works and that they have power and control over their learning, she said.

“Risky play in early childhood can help develop a child’s selfconfidence, resilience, executive functioning abilities and riskmanagement skills,” Dee said.

“Not to mention that when children engage in risky play it can actually reduce the risk of injury as they learn to listen to their body cues.”

It is all in a day's work for the children at Glasshouse Early Education Centre and the centre educators are proud to support the children as they grow into happy, confident and innovative risk takers in the future. Watch this space for renovation updates.

Note from the Mayor This year we have achieved some major milestones with our region shaping projects, but I’m especially proud of the work that council has been able to do with a wide cross section of community representatives to develop our proposed new Community Strategy.

Our proposed new Community Strategy 2019-2041 is a product of the engagement we have had with members of our community and seeks to reflect their aspirations for our Sunshine Coast – both today and in 20 years’ time. The collective vision of Together we Thrive is a strong common thread across all of the feedback and messages we have received in developing this Strategy. The proposed strategy will be considered by council before the end of the year. What makes our community special is our ability to support and reach out, not just to our friends and family, but to our neighbours, acquaintances and community groups.

We open our homes to others in times of natural disasters, we turn out in great numbers to show our commitment and we make time to share with those most in need. Working together makes for a stronger community and that is what the proposed strategy seeks to achieve. Over the past two years, more than 800 community voices have shaped the Landsborough Place Making Master Plan, to breathe new life into the country town.

As part of the place making project, $3.3 million will be injected into Cribb Street. What we have heard so far, is that the community wants a place for people with improved transport, a beautiful and defined town core which retains an authentic country town look and feel. It really will be a place for all lifestyles with a village atmosphere and gathering spaces specifically designed to sustain Landsborough as a loved destination. To do this, the place making team and residents have drawn on Landsborough’s rich heritage which will continue to be celebrated in the designs for its future. It’s great to see so many energised community members and businesses roll up their sleeves to deliver exciting miniprojects to bring Cribb Street to life. We saw an opportunity to provide a place that can be a focus for community life, which will be enjoyed by current and future generations.

Construction of the Streetscape Project is expected to start late February 2020.

Glass House Mountains District Park has been hailed the playground capital of the hinterland with new pathways, a playground extension and eye-catching public art for completion in December, while nearby Turner Park now offers an impressive 8.5 metre high, multi-level tower and slide. I am always trying to improve our parks and welcome more ideas, so please get in touch!

Beerwah is making a big splash with a $1.8 million upgrade at the District Aquatic Centre.

The major upgrade offers the centre a new 17 metre heated and covered pool with accessibility features including a wheelchair ramp. There’s also a new entry and refurbished amenities. The upgrade comes just in time for summer, meeting the growing demands in the township and surrounds.

The new ‘Rail to Trail’ track will offer hikers an adventurous journey connecting the southern Glass House Mountains National Park experience, to the rail line and Beerburrum township. Having acquired the parkland at High Sreet, the existing shelter and table at Peachester Town Park are proposed to be replaced early next year, with a heritage look shelter in keeping with the town’s vernacular.

As I hope you can see from this community update, it’s been a great year for Division 1 especially with our new and upgraded parks. In this last edition of the term, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and New Year.

Aura’s Baringa community has celebrated council’s $3 million district community centre.

The vibrant hub includes three multi-purpose rooms, office areas and a kitchen. Meanwhile, the unlit Kawana Forest underpass to Birtinya will soon have a bright new look after $15,000 was granted to install under-bridge lighting to improve visibility and safety for walkers and cyclists.

Living - Arts Glass House Mountains the winner Sippy Downs resident Shane Farmer’s photograph of the Glass House Mountains at sunset has been declared the winner of federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace’s 2019 #Photos of Fisher Christmas card competition. Now in its third year, the competition asked Sunshine Coast residents to submit photographs of our stunning region.

Joining Mr Farmer in the shadow of the mountains, Mr Wallace congratulated him on winning the competition.

"I want to say a huge thank you to him and to everyone who submitted an image for doing such a great job of showcasing our spectacular region,” Mr Wallace said.

The winning image will be featured on the front cover of Mr Wallace’s Christmas card,

which is widely distributed in Fisher, and will be printed on canvas and hung in Parliament House in Canberra.

“This year, I hope the image on my Christmas card will also stand as a beautiful reminder for Sunshine Coast residents of local legend Ivon Northage, who sadly passed away this month, and the mountains that he loved so much,” he said.

For the competition, Mr Wallace asked people living in the electorate of Fisher to submit photographs of the region by uploading them to Instagram with the hashtag #photosoffisher and the location they were taken. The competition received scores of entries featuring a wide variety of subjects and locations.

“We had images from Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba, from Glass House Mountains, Maleny and Kawana. We received photographs of mountains and beaches, of course, but also stunning pictures of local residents at work and play. It was a real pleasure looking through all of the natural and man-made wonders that our region has to offer, but Shane’s image really stood out,” he said.

The previous two winners of the competition were Jacky Vonhoff of Maleny and Lyn Crandon of Dicky Beach, and their photographs will also continue to hang in Mr Wallace’s parliamentary office alongside the 2019 winner.

Vianta Arts presents Lizzie Connor Vianta Arts in Beerwah will feature an exhibition

by Sunshine Coast professional artist and art tutor Lizzie Connor during December and January.

Lizzie fills each day with a balance of family and work teaching classes from her home-based studio affectionately known by her students as the ‘she shed’.

She is an award-winning artist and also holds art tutoring sessions all over the world including the Greek Islands, Norfolk Island and a regular annual week of art in Fiji.

Creating art that depicts natural surroundings, often the ocean and beach environment, is Lizzie’s talent.

Her art is a mixture of mediums and techniques including pen and wash, acrylic, watercolour and lino print, that have you peering into the piece recalling an experience dancing around your memory evoking wistful smiles.

With one in eight Australian women being diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85, it is the most common cancer diagnosed in Queensland women.

Out & About Christmas Party time There was plenty of excitement when Santa made a special appearance at the Beerburrum Community Christmas party last Saturday at the Beerburrum Hall.

The Beerburrum Hall Committee put together a great program of entertainment for the area’s little (and big) people including a petting zoo, a reptile display, face painting, craft activities and outdoor games.

St George's in the Hills' final concert for 2019 will be a Christmas variety in the church on the corner of Walkers Drive and Tallowood Sreet Maleny at ith Jud and her Christop 2pm on Saturday, Ross-Smith November 30.

an eye to proportion and clean lines to enhance expression of the space.

With an inherent belief in the benefit of sustainable design, as well as low environmental impact buildings and interiors, wherever possible spaces are assessed to incorporate existing, recyclable and surrounding natural materials.

One of their recent wins was for the residential design of R-B House in Maleny, which was originally a four-bay shed, renovated on a tight budget into a comfortable family home. With a goal to make their designs look as simple and graceful as possible, Norm and Fiona put an incredible amount of thought into the project to ensure a finished product that is elegant while also using less embodied energy, minimising artificial heating and cooling and in harmony with its environment.

“Good design, like many endeavours, requires a lot of work to make the result appear effortless,” Norm said.

He said his general approach to design was to be as understated as possible while still retaining elements of comfort and elegance. Ideally, he seeks to use restraint to allow the building to disappear into the surrounding space.

“My goal is to design buildings

that enhance their surroundings with spaces that make people feel good, whether that’s as simple as being warm in winter and cool in summer, the joy of natural light, or the subtle feeling of contentment from being in a well-proportioned space," Norm said.

The team has been blessed with some great likeminded clients who share the innovative vision of the designers. Norm said that he loves what he does and feels that he has to pinch himself every day to be working with such great clients.

Projects are designed using 3D gaming-based software and real time rendering allowing design from the inside out.

“The software lets us walk around inside the virtual spaces. When we have finished a project our clients often comment that it is just like the model! At the end of the day, our design goal is to enhance the experience of each site while maximising comfort and sustainability,” Norm said.

“Once you’re satisfied your new decorations and lights are quality products, before you plug them in check them for any obvious faults or frayed cords because they could have been damaged during shipping.

“Buying cheap Christmas lights and other powered decorations may seem like an attractive proposition now but the serious safety risks faulty or low-quality items can pose may far outweigh the savings later on,” Kevin warned.

Local residents are being urged to keep their rainwater tank safe this summer with regular, effective maintenance.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) manager environmental health, Peter Dyer, said using rainwater tanks involved low maintenance, not no maintenance.

“Like all drinking water supplies, rainwater systems need to be monitored. The associated maintenance is not too onerous but it is necessary,” Mr Dyer said.

“Monitoring your rainwater tank is an important responsibility, consisting of a range of visual inspections rather than laboratory testing of rainwater quality.

Maintenance is needed to maintain good water quality and prevent mosquitoes breeding.”

Here are the top monitoring and maintenance activities that will help you keep your rainwater tank system safe: • Clean gutters (six-monthly and after storms) • Clear first flush device of debris (monthly and after storms) • Check for evidence of animal, bird or insect access (six-monthly) • Check roof and gutters for accumulated debris including leaf and other plant material (six-monthly) • Check and trim overhanging branches (six-monthly) • Inspect and repair downpipes, check condition of the roof (six-monthly) • Check tanks for sludge accumulation (at least every 2-3 years). If sludge is covering the bottom of the tank, siphon it out or completely empty the tank.

Mr Dyer said that for most people, especially those who had been drinking rainwater for most of their lives, there would be very little health risk in drinking rainwater, provided the rainwater collection and storage system was well maintained.

“However, there are some members of the community for whom microorganisms (such as bacteria), when present in rainwater, could pose health risks, including infants, the elderly and immune-compromised people such as transplant, dialysis, HIV or cancer patients with severely weakened immune systems,” Mr Dyer said.

“These people should consider disinfecting the water before drinking or cooking with it. You can do this by boiling the water.”

Community herb garden sprouts

Landsborough’s first community herb garden has sprung to life with the first plantings going in recently.

The garden is located under one of the shelter sheds in the park near Landsborough train station.

It is part of a Cribb Street upgrade and Sunshine Coast Council’s broader Landsborough Place Making Master Plan currently under development.

The idea for a herb garden came from Landsborough locals Sue Eadie and Bekky Hoge, who are both volunteers working with council to implement the project.

"Fresh herbs are great for eating and using in cooking, so we thought it would be fun to create a convenient place where locals can get them for free," said Sue, the director of KinderMarlee Early Childhood Centre just a block away.

"Once the plants are growing nicely and are well established, we are more than happy for people to pick a few sprigs of their favourite herb to toss through whatever they are eating at home," she said.

"All we’re asking for in return is that people help keep the herbs growing strongly by watering them as they pass by," said Bekky, a volunteer with Landsborough’s Rural Fire Brigade.

"We’ve made it easy by leaving a couple of watering cans next to the garden.

The tap is just a couple of steps away," she said.

• If you haven’t done it yet, prune your azaleas

to keep them nice and compact, and give

them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them

with a systemic insecticide to protect the

leaves from the dreaded azalea lace bug.

• The wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veges overnight. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Success or Dipel) every couple of days. Remember that water washes off any sprays, so retreat after rain or overhead irrigation.

• Watch out for fruit fly in your tomatoes. You can protect your tomatoes by using an insect exclusion bag or by a chemical spray designed for the job.

You can use a baited trap but most only capture the male flies, so are best used as an indicator of fruit fly activity. A good one to try is Eco Naturelure that attracts both the male and female fruit flies and contains a natural insecticide to kill them. My advice is not to spray it onto the | plants you want to protect as it will attract the fruit flies to them before killing them. I suggest spraying a nearby fence or other structures nearby to lure the flies away from your precious fruits.

• Fertilise your bananas and cut out any suckers you don’t want. For each mature plant you should have one sapling and one sucker. Regularly remove yellowing leaves to keep the clump tidy.

• Paw paw trees that have grown too tall can be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can.

• Prune back your grevilleas by a third and feed them with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates the plant to grow back if burnt by a bushfire, and stimulates them to grow more branches – more branches means more flowers.

• Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the mornings or the afternoons so you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too – keeping well hydrated is just as important.

• Tidy up the garden for Santa – he doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden.

Sport Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Wildcats were the grand final winners defeating Eumundi Echo at Maroochydore Tennis Club. It was a very close match with the lead changing after each set. It came down to the last set and the Wildcats held on to win. The score was 5-3 sets and 37-33 games. The pro-am is back for a third year at Maleny Golf Club on Saturday, December 4, with about 60 tour regulars competing, including golfing icon Peter Senior.

Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club Contributed by Ray Semmens Summer tennis is now under way with the Australian Open coming up in January.

Our senior teams have just concluded their season with two of our teams reaching the grand finals. In division two the Mungrels won their grand final and in division three the Maddogs were runners up, which was a fantastic effort by all players. Well done.

In the juniors our team in division two, the Meerkatz, are again in the finals, so good luck boys. All of our other teams played exceptionally well and are getting great experience.

The club has three excellent Plexipave courts for hire to non-members and social players. We also have a Thursday social night starting at 7pm for players of all standards, so come along and join in.

Police Bowls breakup this Sunday and this will be our last visitors for the year. If you can play on the day please place your name down at the club as we need more people. Start time is now 10.30am with lunch at 1pm for those who intend to eat.

Membership fees for 2020 are now due and are to be paid by December 31. The cost remains at $95. If you do not intend to renew please let our secretary know.

Our trophies and presentation luncheon is at 12noon on Saturday, December 14. Please arrive at this time to mingle with fellow club members and have a drink. Lunch will start at about 1pm, which is a full buffet style meal. After lunch presentations will begin with the club person of the year as well as most improved bowler of the year to be announced. We will then take to the green barefoot with a couple of closest to the spider games, etc. Dress is neat casual and with a cost of $25 every member should be there for this great afternoon.

Due to a storm at about 2pm, the field was called in and some ladies chose not to continue with only 13 ladies completing the day. Sunday, November 17 unfortunately had to be abandoned due to the crazy hail storm. So the winner was decided on the first round. Vanessa Aland on 69 nett, won on a count back from Mary Hepburn from Caloundra Golf Club.

Thursday, November 21: A stableford event in two divisions with 62 players. Division one winner was Meg Ferran with 39 points from Karen Madsen 35. POSITION VACANT - OFFICE MANAGER Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group is a small dynamic not-for-profit community group based in the Maleny district of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, working with the local community to improve water quality in the catchment.

We seek a responsible and experienced administrative assistant to take care of an array of clerical and administrative duties.

Key responsibilities of the role include: financial recording and obligations, website management, developing and maintaining filing systems, preparing reports, maintaining policy and procedure documentation and general office duties.
