As I write my column on Friday afternoon, I have to say I am a little distracted with my internal countdown to the weekend – thinking about all that I am planning to do.

I was recently chatting to Fiona Cran, the School Chaplain from Glasshouse Country Christian College, who told me all about the upcoming Mega Garage Sale that the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church is holding on August 4.

It should be a great day of bargains, with a jumping castle and food as well as an opportunity to raise funds for the Beerwah and Beerburrum school chaplains, Mike Turner and Steph Alksne.

As an avid recycler and re-user I think it is great to have a garage sale as a fundraiser, and to ask the community for suitable donations to sell.

I say this as someone who has quite a few items at home that I really don’t need, but which are still in good working order. So, it looks like I will be doing a bit of very early spring cleaning this weekend.

If you are like me and also have suitable items for the Mega Garage Sale, all you need to do is drop them down at the Baptist Church in Roberts Road at Beerwah between 8am and 8pm on Friday August 3.

Local News Fortunate escape in Glass House During a busy Friday night at Frankie J’s Pizza at Glass House Mountains, staff and customers narrowly escaped injury when a four-wheel drive vehicle crashed through the front of the business, smashing into the wall between them and the IGA supermarket next door.

Once the shock of the incident had passed, the business owners Debbie Franks and Brian Lord were absolutely thankful that no one had been seriously injured.

Debbie said it was a miracle, as if it had happened five minutes earlier or had the collision involved the gas lines that operate the ovens, there would have been a different story.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Reed Street, Glass House Mountains about 7.30pm on Friday.

The woman driving the vehicle was treated by paramedics who took her to Caboolture Hospital in a stable condition.

At this stage what caused the accident is unknown and the police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Beerwah sign makeover Have you noticed the rejuvenated Welcome to Beerwah entry statement at the Steve Irwin Way Roys Road intersection?

Back in November 2011, Glasshouse Country News ran a front page story on its installation, featuring the local councillor at the time, Anna Grosskreutz, unveiling the new sign with Sarah Rayner, the Maleny artist responsible for the design.

It marked the start of the ‘Place +’ project which eventually saw the redevelopment the Simpson Street CBD area, including the large colourful timber Beerwah entry sign at the roundabout.

“To get the most from the sign, lighting is being installed which will be fully operational very soon.”

The funds for the upgrade were provided by Cr Baberowski from his Divisional funds.

Towers okay next to childcare centres and schools, according to Council In last week’s letters page, Jim Straker from Maleny raised some concerns with proposed changes to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, specifically relating to softening provisions for controlling where telecommunication facilities (i.e. mobile phone and NBN towers) are permitted to be constructed.

Deep within the 94-page document outlining a raft of proposed amendments to the Planning Scheme, Jim discovered some fundamental changes to the Telecommunications Facility Code.

The code was written so as to make sure that these telecommunication towers – which emit and receive electromagnetic radio frequencies – are sited away from “sensitive land uses”.

The key to this was a distance setback from a range of land uses and facilities such as schools, childcare centre, community centres, residential areas, parks and pathways.

But now, Sunshine Coast Council wants to take out a reference to the term “sensitive land uses” as well as specifically deleting “childcare centre”, “community care centre” and “educational establishment” from the code.

This effectively means that these towers, which once had to be kept 500m away from places where children were spending much of their day, could now be located adjacent to – or even within – a childcare centre, school or other such facility.

As Jim asks in his letter, “Why would such vulnerable sections of the community (i.e. children) be excluded?”

When asked for a rationale behind the changes, a Council spokesperson explained that they were in response to an earlier internal review of the code which relates to visual amenity being given greater relevance.

“Due to community interest generated from various development applications for telecommunications towers in the Sunshine Coast hinterland areas, the review considered the intent and outcomes of the telecommunications facility code,” said the spokesperson.

“In particular, it was determined that some refinements to the telecommunications facility code were required to clarify that the setback distances mentioned in the code are, in essence, about protecting the visual amenity of nearby residential uses and public spaces and are not related to health and safety considerations, which are separately dealt with in the code.”

The review went to a full Council meeting for ratification last October.

In the same suite of changes, Council has flagged that multiple dwelling and rooming accommodation developments will need to provide more onsite parking.

An example of these residential developments is the controversial proposal at 37 Maleny Street, Landsborough (pictured above).

Under the current planning scheme (which the 37 Maleny Street proposal is being assessed against), multiple dwelling developments only have to provide one carpark per unit and rooming accommodation developments one car space per six rooming beds.

In the proposed planning scheme changes (which the 37 Maleny Street proposal won’t be assessed against) the rooming accommodation category will need to provide one car space per two beds.

The multiple dwelling developments will be subjected to a sliding scale depending on how many bedrooms there are per unit. For every one-bedroom unit, one car space will be needed; 2-bedroom units will require 1.25 spaces; three bedrooms 1.5 car spaces; and four-plus bedrooms two car parks per unit.

After months of planning, a 3D photogrammetry study and an archaeological investigation, work has begun to restore the state heritage-listed shed at Bankfoot House at Glass House Mountains.

Constructed by William Burgess in 1935, the condition of the shed had deteriorated significantly in recent times due to the building materials used, timber decay, termite infestation and ground water damage.

Sunshine Coast Council’s $250,000 Cultural Heritage Levy funded conservation project involves the careful replacement of building fabric that is beyond repair, repair and re-use of fabric that can be saved and the sensitive incorporation of new material.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said: “To commemorate this historical milestone, our Cultural Heritage team is developing a revised, contemporary, interpretation plan for the site, which will include new displays in the shed, Bankfoot House and the Mary Grigor Centre.

“Preserving and maintaining this piece of our region’s history and restoring the shed is an important legacy for current and future generations as it helps to ensure the story of this site is retained,” he said.

Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said detailed investigative work was undertaken to plan the restoration project.

“When planning for the shed restoration, archaeological research was conducted in and around the shed to determine whether there was

any significant material beneath the ground,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Amongst the many artefacts you would expect to find in a shed, such as nails, screws and metal fragments, the archaeologists also made an exciting and unexpected discovery, uncovering a cobblestone floor and fragments of nineteenth century ceramics.

“The cobblestone floor pre-dates the shed construction and we believe it may have been from a pig shed and butchery located on this part of the site.

“We are now going to incorporate a viewing window as a part of the new interpretation plan so visitors can see a section of the cobblestones uncovered during the archaeological exploration.”

Restoration work is due to be complete in time for the Bankfoot House sesquicentenary celebration event on October 14.

$1.5 million for specialist eating disorder facility

The Federal Government will provide $1.5 million for Australia’s first residential eating disorder treatment facility on the Sunshine Coast at Mooloolah Valley, helping hundreds of patients each year.

The joint project led by Sunshine-Coast-based endED organisation and the Butterfly Foundation will establish endED Butterfly House.

Minister for Health Greg Hunt said the facility will be located on the Sunshine Coast because the region has a particularly high rate of people with eating disorders and a substantial need for services.

“This centre will provide specialist care to hundreds of people experiencing eating disorders, through in-patient and best practice treatment programs,” Mr Hunt said.

“It will advance the way eating disorders are diagnosed and treated, providing 24/7 intensive care and support as well as training, education and advocacy at the 12-bed facility.

“It will also include rooms for recreation, family therapy and group therapy.”

Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said eating disorders can be devastating, not only affecting an individual’s relationship with food, but also their body image, confidence, mental health and overall health.

“Many suffer in silence with only 25% of people with eating disorders thought to be diagnosed,” Mr Wallace said.

“It will provide a peaceful and home-like environment for the residential centre, which will operate as a not for profit facility.”

Construction is set to start this year with endED Butterfly House expected to open in early 2020.

Mr Wallace said the local council and community have been supportive of the establishment of a residential facility, providing considerable assistance in getting the project started.

“The project has so far raised $1.3 million in philanthropic funding and has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in donated services and in-kind support,” Mr Wallace said.

“My hope is that endED Butterfly House will become a leading light and model for other residential eating disorder centres across the country.”

Business News Bank staff support kids in foster care

Local staff at CommBank Beerwah Branch took their support for the Pyjama Foundation seriously last Friday when they came to work dressed in their PJs as part of the National Pyjama Day campaign.

The Pyjama Foundation provides a one-on-one mentoring program to children in foster care who desperately need assistance with reading, writing and building confidence.

Sadly, there are more than 51,000 Australian children currently living in foster care. Research shows that 75% of children are not finishing school.

The Pyjama Foundation’s literacy and numeracy programs are designed to try and reverse this trend.

Guests at the recent Maleny Commerce Breakfast had the opportunity to get a really great insight into the Sunshine Coast Airport operations and future plans with Steve Prasser, General Manager of Commercial and Aviation, making an interesting presentation.

The growth in international passenger movements at Australia’s top 10 airports has outpaced growth in domestic passengers for more than a decade, and for the past five years the gap has been widening.

The Asia-Pacific market is expected to account for 41% of new passenger aircraft deliveries between 2017 and 2036.

As passenger airlines increasingly look to improve their margins by utilising their belly hold cargo space, Sunshine Coast Airport will be working with the region’s primary producers and manufacturing industries, as well as tourism operators, to jointly attract new international services. This in turn builds regional economic diversification and employment, as well as tourism.

Our second presenter, Rachel Meyer, Director of International Marketing, Visit Sunshine Coast, who is based in Singapore, presented the facts and figures surrounding the regional Australia and international tourist markets with some interesting statistics.

While food and wine are a big tourist pull which has led the way for some years now, a national and international visitors survey showed that

over a five-year period nature and wildlife had the biggest growth of 10.6% compared to a 7.4% increase for food and wine. Culture and Heritage was the next biggest growth area with a 7.9% increase. The Sunshine Coast certainly delivers in the nature and wildlife section.

Rachel spoke about the vision to continue to position Queensland’s Sunshine Coast as Australia’s premium revitalisation leisure and business events destination. It was interesting to see how our region is being marketed to the world.

To sum it up, it was a great breakfast meeting and great to see many members and other business people take part in the event.

Canetoad Cruisers

Following up on local entrants in this year’s Great Endeavour Rally, GC&M News caught up with Mount Mellum’s Nigel and Gayle Pattinson who competed under the team moniker of ‘Canetoad Cruisers’. Raising a whopping $52,000, this team of highly motivated fundraisers has been awarded ‘Highest Fundraiser’ for the second year in a row.

Q: Why the name Canetoad Cruisers?

A: We are avid Queensland fans (Gayle is a sixth generation Queenslander) so hence the ‘Canetoad’, and we are in a 1986 60 Series Toyota Landcruiser and therefore that’s the ‘Cruisers’.

Q: How did you get involved with the Rally?

A: It is something that we had thought about doing for a while and the opportunity arose through a connection with CGU Insurance and we bought the car and ran with it from there.

Q: How many years have you entered in the Rally?

A: Two years – 2017 and 2018.

Q: Do you have the same vehicle and can you tell us a bit more about it?

A: Yes – It’s a 1986 Toyota Landcruiser with a 12HT motor and Tough Dog Air Suspension.

Nigel has spent a lot of time getting it ‘Rally Ready’ with all the necessary safety gear and equipment such as snatch straps and extra water and fuel storage.

Q: You mentioned that last year you were the Highest Fundraiser – can you tell us a bit more about this achievement and what you raised this year?

A: Last year we were awarded the Highest Fundraiser trophy, raising $58,000, and we also were awarded the best all round new entrant trophy. This year we raised $52,000 which ended us up as the Highest Fundraisers again with a total of $110,000 over two years which is thanks to our wonderful sponsors – CGU Insurance, Noja Power, Yatala Pie Shop and Positive Fire Protection (our company) along with our supportive friends and family and business associates.

Q: Any key highlights or challenges from the trip to share?

A: We stayed at Wallangarra which is right on the Qld/NSW border (on the Queensland side of course) on our first night. We travelled only 350km but still took until 3.30pm to get in due to some pretty rough, narrow and windy tracks. With minus-2 degrees overnight and 15 to 20km per hour winds, sleeping in the tent was interesting! The next day we had a journalist from News Corp join us in our car for the day.

There was lots of wildlife and cattle about on the tracks and on day two a wallaby decided to bound off the side of the car in

three places before jumping away into the bush!

Half way through the last stage we started getting a nasty clunking noise from the rear diff.

The army caught up with us and removed the tail shaft and we crawled our way into Burren Junction.

Collereina Hall, Ballimore and Lake Keepit were highlights for overnight stays with all of the locals putting on great nights for us. Dubbo Zoo was awesome, especially the lion feeding.

We went through Bogan Shire all dressed as Bogans for the day and visited the giant Bogan.

Q: Anything else you’d like our readers to know?

A: We would recommend joining up for the rally to anyone who has been considering it – it’s great fun, you meet lots of great people and all money raised helps the Endeavour Foundation.

Q: Planning next year already?

A: Yes! We have started planning for next year already which is in July and starts in Bundaberg and heads out to Julia Creek and Karumba and ends in Townsville.

Community News Chooks get their own book

By Sonia Clark Beerwah children’s author Nicole Madeley has recently launched her first self-published book, 'Gloria has Grit and Gets the Goods'.

This is the first title in a planned series of seven 'Chooks on a Mission’ books targeted at early childhood readers from Prep to Year 2. The books draw upon everyday life on a farm based on Nicole’s family experience.

The books focus on the characters of Gloria and Edwina, two spirited chickens “whose adventures take them far from the farmyard and into the hearts of little readers”.

Nicole says that the characters are based on actual chickens the family had while her children were growing up.

“I love chooks and I think they make great characters,” she said. “They are particularly relatable for children and allow children to use their imagination and see life from a different perspective.”

Nicole has spent over a decade working in early education and has worked for many years as a Prep Teacher’s Aide.

She says her work has had a massive influence on her book and how it has been rewritten and designed. Nicole says she wanted to create a series of books that teach a different lesson about the many emotions and challenges we face in every-day life while also looking at different letter and sound combinations.

Written for children, but with teachers and parents in mind, each book will have an instructional page, questions and activities and look at a different set of sounds with a strong focus on developing phonemic awareness.

Huge response to Zonta’s Birthing Kit assembly day

Zonta Club of Blackall Range President Julie Bevan was Zontian Tina Rhode with Linda overwhelmed by the community Costello (Hospital Auxiliary) and response to the recent birthing kit Zontian Carolyn Williams assembly day with more than 65 women coming along on the day to assemble 1,600 kits.

The organisations who responded to the call out for help included Quota, CWA, Hospital Auxiliary, Uniting Church, Maleny Community Gym, Range Readers, Sunstone ladies, Maleny Garden Club, and a family from Buderim whose mother is studying midwifery at USC. The history of the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia (BKFA) has a background within Zonta in Australia.

An Adelaide doctor, Joy O’Hazy, inspired by a talk by actor Sally Field at the 1995 UN Women’s conference in Beijing, researched the products needed and sought the support of the Zonta Club of Adelaide Hills. The first 100 kits were assembled by the members of that club in 1999, for distribution in PNG. Zontian June Robson, who organises the program on the Range, explained that you start with a small zip lock bag and a box of plastic sheets one metre square.

“Our members take these items home and fold the sheets into the bags. This has to be precise, because a hundred kits have to fit exactly into the delivery box,” she said.

“On assembly day the volunteers put in a pair of gloves, a piece of soap to wash the attendants’ hands, three pieces of gauze to wash the baby’s face, a scalpel and three pieces of string to tie the umbilical cord.

“This simple pack has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of babies and their mothers in developing countries the world over. It is a program of which Zonta is, and has a right to be, immensely proud, and we at Blackall Range are proud also to be part of it.

“We want to thank all those people who volunteered at our recent assembly,” she said.

Women among the ‘angry men’ The Maleny Players have been busy with rehearsals for their next production of ‘Twelve Angry Men’, by Reginald Rose and adapted by Sherman Segel.

When the curtain opens the audience may be surprised to see females playing three of the jurors in this famous drama about a murder trial.

The play was originally written for American television. The well-known film starring Henry Fonda retained the all-male jury.

Subsequently, the play was adapted for the stage with an option for females in some roles.

In fact an all-female version exists.

Producer Andrew Wallace explained that these days a jury would most likely be mixed and seems more natural.

“Although we are preserving the 1950s feel of the play in most respects, we had talented local women eager for a part,” he said.

“In any case, the change of gender makes very little difference. The dialogue is mostly unchanged and there is still a clash of different personalities.”

Our piece of paradise Having been fortunate enough to travel to quite a few different places over the years and having recently returned from France, Germany and the UK, it really hits home how lucky we are to live in a place like the Sunshine Coast and I am certainly grateful to work here. Seeing the sort of equipment and firepower the police officers were carrying around was sometimes a bit confronting and I’m not sure how keen I’d be to put it all on each shift. Lucky for all of us, that’s not our reality in Queensland. It’s always fun to travel but it’s good to be home.

Busy month for Beerwah Lions

Contributed by Bob Banner At their monthly dinner meeting Beerwah Lions looked back at a busy month.

Lion John Nesbit received recognition for his efforts in introducing new members to the world of Lionism.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Kylie Pinwill, a nutritionist who gave a highly interesting address.

She urged everyone to get back to basics with food; eating fresh whole foods helps with healthy ageing and long term well-being.

Club members also undertook other fundraising Guest speaker activities by assisting with car parking at the recent Kyli e Pinwill Queensland Garden Expo held at Nambour and also conducted their twice monthly barbeques at Bunnings Hardware.

In June our group sent off 226 kilos of empty aluminium cans for recycling, rather than becoming landfill. We also continue to collect discarded spectacles at Beerwah Spec Savers, The Beerwah Recycle Centre and Landsborough Chemist. These are sent to underprivileged countries to help restore vision to needy people.

Mooloolah’s Walking Group

Contributed by Helen Weil The Mooloolah Mob started regularly walking in November 2004 and here we are in 2018, still walking each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 6.45am during winter (returning to a 6.30am start in September).

We meet at Martin Rungert Park, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes around the local area. Walking is for about an hour and it is a great way to start the day and to make new friends.

This is a National Heart Foundation group activity with certificates and awards for number of walks and attaining certain goals. Most of all it is about staying active and healthy in a friendly social environment.

You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can.

We have our speedy walkers who cover a greater distance and we have our less speedy walkers who maintain a more average pace but we all walk and that is what is important.

Please consider coming along to enjoy the social aspect of belonging to a friendly group as well as the health benefits of regular walking.

During the nine days, led by choir director Stephanie Arlidge, Sweet Chilli sang at many different venues throughout Hobart, including the Link Library, Town Hall, IXL Atrium, Bright Eyes café by the waterfront and at the nightly singers lounge at Salamanca Arts Centre.

We received a fantastic reception wherever we went and feel we did Maleny proud.

Home on the Range

Maleny’s Don English is justifiably proud of his family home, ‘Fairview’ (Pattemore House), and his enduring connection to the property and he is keen to encourage locals and visitors to enjoy the opportunity to see the house themselves when it is open this Saturday between 1pm and 4pm.

Don and Jan English with The home was built from white beech felled his mum Emily English’s on the property back in 1907, by Don’s portrait grandfather Ernest Pattemore and his four brothers, for their parents, JR and Emily Pattemore.

Don’s mother, Emily English (nee Pattemore) was responsible for gaining State Heritage listing for the house back in 2003. Today the house is owned

by Sunshine Coast Council.

Over the past decade Fairview has been transformed into a successful heritage tourism venture by the Friends of Pattemore House, a volunteer group of which Don is a committee member.

The house has been preserved so that future generations can experience and enjoy a fine example of an early Maleny farmhouse, learn about its construction, the lives of the families who lived there, and its links with early Maleny history.

Pattemore House at 15 Porters Lane, Maleny is open to the public from 1pm to 4pm on the last Saturday of every month. Entry is $5 for adults and children are free. There is plenty of parking, disabled Come and chat to our deli team today!access is available and afternoon teas can be purchased.

You Said It Men’s Shed for Mooloolah

Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc has finally received verbal permission from Education Queensland to build the Mooloolah Valley Men’s Shed at the rear of our Community Centre.

Education QLD is the owner of the site.

This project has been two years in the planning stage. We have been waiting for final permission since February 2018.

Now that permission is in place, we can go ahead and call for interested locals to form a Committee to oversee the project.

The first meeting for public discussion will be held on August 4 at 2pm at the Mooloolah Public Hall, 42 Bray Street, Mooloolah Valley.

Golf is a perennial source of contention in Maleny.

For supporters, the problem is often phrased as 'anti-elitism', as if golf was an elite sport played by elite people at elite clubs, even in humble Maleny.

For the detractors, the problem is not so much golf as the fact that most of the land usable for recreation on the Maleny Precinct excluding environment protected areas is tied up by the course (even the EPAs have been compromised by the course but that's another story).

Nine holes would have sufficed for a town this size, but a plan approved by Council eight years ago provided for 18 holes and by gum, that's what we'll get, never mind the modest number of players and the budget shortfall for community spaces and amenities, not only in Maleny but in other Division 5 towns like Mooloolah.

Some golf club members appear to have their doubts, judging by a survey in late 2017 which

The Maleny Cultural and Historical Society has recently become the proud owner of the Maleny historical jail lock up.

With the completion of the Maleny new Police Station back in 2017 and the sale of the old police station, the Queensland Government

decided that the old jail should be preserved.

The building was recently relocated from its location in Maple Street, to its new home at the Historical Village.

rated a clubhouse with a liquor licence as the top priority, well above more holes.

Despite that, and despite faltering membership and high maintenance costs, the president has announced a six hole expansion “over the next two years” to bring the course to 18 holes. By gum.

Cr Jenny McKay has advised our campaign that the $225,000 grant made to the club in the latest budget will be used for "agreed works” for one year, 2018-19.

This exceeds by $40,000 the tranche limit set in 2016. Why? And what happens in 2019-20? Us ratepayers are paying for this!

Just think of the community park we could create on Platypus Bend, one of the most beautiful spaces in Maleny and the only one that is both park-perfect and an easy walk from town, if we had $225,000 to get started.

He clearly had lots of creative energy and plenty of ‘big plans’ and these days, sitting in his Vianta Espresso & Wine Bar in Turner Street at Beerwah enjoying the mellow atmosphere on a Friday and Saturday night, it is obvious that Steve knew what he was on about and has created a really special place that the local area really embraced.

Hinterland Kids A ‘beary’ special playgroup

Contributed by Helen White The weather was glorious and the teddies were feeling very mischievous last Wednesday morning at the Coonowrin Kids Playgroup at the Glass House Charlotte Mountains School.

They wanted to go on a bear hunt from playgroup over to the school oval for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. They blew bubbles, the children tossed their teddies in the air on the parachute, played musical bears and shared a beary scrumdidlyumptious morning tea that the parents provided.

There was also a photo booth so the bears and their owners could dress up for their photos, and the children made teddy bear necklaces, sang songs and read a story all about teddy bears.

If you would like to join the playgroup they would love to welcome you along. They meet on Wednesdays from 9am-11am during school terms.

Tibro’s Netball players represent district

Contributed by Britt Holley Over a four day period in July, four girls from the Tibro’s Netball Club represented the Caloundra District at the State Netball Championships at Ipswich with teams coming from as far away as Cairns and western Queensland.

Kaitlin Morris (Under 12 Division 2), Adelie Tomokino (Under 12 Division 2), Isabel Holley (Under 15 Division 2) and Boni Gray (Under 15 Division 1) played their hearts out during 12 games of netball.

Watching 336 players across 24 courts all playing simultaneously from 8am to 8pm daily was quite a sight.

All four girls improved their techniques through a comprehensive training program and their teams excelled. In pools of 30 teams, Under 15 Division 1 came eighth, Under 15 Division 2 came eighth and Under 12 Division 2 came sixteenth.

This was a great effort and all of the girls are looking forward to other netball opportunities.

Connecting through dance Students from Landsborough's Black Swan School of Dance recently visited the residents of Glasshouse Views Retirement Village as a part of the school's ‘Connecting Through Dance’ community project.

In addition to putting on a mini concert, the students demonstrated dancing technique and spoke with residents about their time at the dance school and the many things they love about their classes.

Director of the Dance School, Rebecca Willshire, said she and the girls were delighted to spend time with the residents, many of whom remain enthusiastic dancers.

“I believe that having a strong connection to your community is important and I am proud to be able to give my students the opportunity to feel that connection through dance,” she said.

Health &Wellbeing Have your say on sugary drinks

This month Cancer Council Queensland and the Heart Foundation launched an Everyday Health Survey on sugar-sweetened beverages, aiming to identify consumer habits, determine understanding of the health impacts of sugary drinks, and assess support for proposed regulations to reduce consumption of these products.

The findings will enable organisations to develop new campaigns and advocate for regulations that will positively impact the health of Queenslanders.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan is encouraging people to speak out and have their say on the future of sugary drinks.

“Sugar-sweetened beverages are a major source of sugar in the Australian diet – yet we know that these beverages have little or no nutritional value, provide excess energy, and lead to weight gain,” she said.

“Although many factors influence obesity, research indicates sugary drinks play a significant role in driving up rates – which is an established risk factor for chronic diseases, including cancer.

“It’s our priority to combat this weighty issue, and advocate for changes in our community including marketing restrictions and a 20% levy on sugary drinks.

Trump's recent meeting with Putin may have reminded some of us just how bleak and soulless life in contemporary Russia can be for many of its citizens. ‘Loveless’, a bleak and uncompromising portrait of a Russian family in crisis, will do little to dispel those notions.

Written and directed by the highly respected (not by the Russian government!) Andrey Zvyagintsev (‘Leviathan’), this 2017 drama depicts the story of a bitterly unhappy couple, Boris and Zhenya, who are going through an acrimonious divorce. It seems neither parent wants their 12-year-old son Aloysha and there's talk of an orphanage.

At this point, the boy goes missing. Tellingly, his parents only notice his absence when the school phones to tell them the following day. Local police are indifferent and unhelpful, so Boris and Zhenya have to rely on volunteers to try to find the boy. Surely this is a sad comment on the state police of Putin's Russia.

Commentators of ‘Loveless’ see it as a metaphor for everything that's wrong with Russia today. The director himself says: "It's like living in a minefield, this is the feeling you live with here today." The country seems to have lost its humanity. The bleak landscapes of a wintry Leningrad stunningly emphasise the cold heartlessness of the tragic narrative.

Critically acclaimed, ‘Loveless’ won several awards, including the 2017 Jury Prize at Cannes.

Go with the Flow

Vianta Arts in Beerwah is all set to host the work of Noela Mills in her exhibition ‘Go with the Flow’ between July 30 and September 1.

Noela has been a practising artist since the 1970s when she had a career for over 20 years as an Art and Design Secondary School Teacher.

Since 1995 she has focused on her own practice, with many successful artist residences, and solo and joint exhibitions across Australia.

She is represented in such diverse places as Uluru, The Marriott Hotel Brisbane, Tatebayashi City Council Gunma Japan, and Monash University Victoria.

‘Go with the Flow’ is a reflection on the pace of life that we live these days.

Noela says: “In this day and age of globalisation – instant information, political intrigue, economic bullying – how are we to absorb and process all of this? It can be enough to send us crazy! My philosophy, when it all gets too much, is to ‘go with the flow’.”

She believes that: “Each of us can make small changes on a local level according to our interests and abilities, and then hopefully a positive global change will evolve.”

This exhibition, of up to 20 acrylic and mixed media paintings on canvas, explores her philosophy of “accepting, encouraging and making changes where possible and of appreciating things that make us feel good, happy, loved, and fulfilled”.

Serge Grimaitre exhibition

The Maleny Library will feature an exhibition of works by Witta artist Serge Grimaitre throughout the month of August.

Serge has been painting for most of his life and his latest paintings were done spontaneously, going with the flow of shades and lines already on the board, not knowing what would appear next.

Serge loves the surprise of seeing his paintings appear almost of their own accord.

Climbing back up the bank she hurt her ankle so spent the time taking in the view while her friend searched for the car. It couldn’t have been better – late afternoon sun, snowy mountains, water reflections and brilliant yellow autumn trees.

She took a series of photos, ten minutes apart, showing how the light changed in the hour she spent there. This one, taken at f20,1/125s at ISO100 was her pick and won for her ‘Picture of the Month’.

From the churches How do we know the Bible is true?

It’s a good question to ask. The Bible claims to contain accurate, reliable and trustworthy information about God and about the life of Jesus Christ. But we cannot ignore the fact it is an old book passed along for many generations.

The Bible’s critics argue it seems obvious that the Bible would change over the generations and what we read today is vastly different from what was written.

So, let look at the evidence.

For starters, those people who were copying various parts of the Bible, from very early on, seemed to have a great respect for the documents they were copying. They took a lot of care as the pages were rewritten.

The greatest piece of evidence was discovered in 1948 in Israel with a group of ancient manuscripts known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, named after the area they were found in. You can “Google” the story if you want to know more.

Some of these scrolls were copies of parts of the Old Testament portion of the Bible which dated from around about 100 BC. Most of the Old Testament was finalised by

Up until this discovery the earliest Old Testament documents we had dated from around 900 AD. So with one discovery 1,000 years was wiped away.

Scholars were keen to compare and what they discovered was that nothing much had changed.

There were some spelling errors and rewordings – but nothing that changed the meaning whatsoever and the two documents were way more similar than they weren’t.

Jesus once told a story about a man who claimed he didn’t know about God, nor was he warned about his fate. The reply was: “He has the Bible he should read it.” The man’s response was: “No, but if someone gets up from the dead they would believe him!” To which Jesus said, “If they do not listen to the Bible they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.”

Jesus is right. There is enough evidence to prove the Bible to be historically reliable and unchanged – the real issue is that people don’t want to believe.

By Lea Parkes With many of us now keen followers of television shows like The Block and House Rules, I reckon I feel like I can talk like an expert about colour trends and styles for winter.

Well actually, while I would like to think I am secretly an interior designer, I have gone to the experts to see what someone with a title of Colour and Communications Manager for Dulux considers what’s on trend for choosing colours to paint with this winter.

The professionals advice is you need to create a cosy, sophisticated vibe with cool greys and warm accents.

This winter, the mood is minimalist, casual, yet elegant, with a colour scheme of cool greys and warm natural tones.

Think uncomplicated design combined with pale grey and accents of putty, rust, grey green and terracotta.

Dulux’s Andrea Lucena-Orr said that with its soft, muted shades, this palette is all about laidback sophistication and simplicity. It’s incredibly easy to live with and works beautifully in Australian homes.

“Colour is a powerful decorating tool. It can change the mood of a space and elicit emotions in those who spend time there – whether it‘s a cosy and inviting living room that encourages guests to relax and settle in, or a bedroom that feels calm and restful the moment you step foot in it,” she said.

The ‘Essential’ palette is also the perfect pairing for the warm neutrals many of us already have in our homes.

“When updating your colour scheme, you don’t necessarily have to go all out – sometimes small changes can create all the impact you need.

“The cool natural tones of the Essential palette sit wonderfully alongside warm whites such as Dulux Whisper White.”

If you’re cautious about introducing colour, start small.

• Look to add colour accents in unexpected spots, such as behind shelving, on the edge of doors or around a window frame.

• Experiment with one of the season’s biggest colour trends – the tonal look – by using different shades or strengths of the one colour on walls, details and even furniture.

• Texture is another key driver this season – think raw, matt finishes and textured effects such as Dulux Suede Effect for walls, all of which will add depth and natural appeal to a space.

• Pair this with simple furniture with minimalist lines, and accessories in untreated timber, leather and brass for an understated, luxe look.

• Colour is enormous fun, so don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new.

Low Tox Spring Clean

It’s not long now until Spring which means it’s time to start thinking about all those projects you have on your Spring cleaning ‘to do’ list.

If the idea of Spring cleaning raises concerns about the amount of cleaning products involved with their harsh chemicals, then you might want to think about booking into one of the upcoming workshops to be held at both the Maleny and Beerwah Libraries which are all about ‘Low Tox Spring Cleaning’.

The session at Maleny will be held on Thursday, August 23 from 1pm – 2.30pm and at Beerwah on Wednesday, September 5 from 10am – 11.30am.

It’s a great way to learn how to make your own cleaning products that are healthy, natural and effective and find out how easy it can be to detox your home with the help of essential oils.

Join Sarah Harmon from The Essential Village and start freeing your home of what can be

described as nasty chemicals and find out more about the benefits of using essential oils in the home environment. A demonstration will be included as part of the workshop.

In the Garden From butterflies to birds

Tree Planting Day is a significant event at Peachester State School.

Each year the entire month of July is when the Enviro Club students and Dorothy Robb dedicate time to preparing the school’s Indigenous Forest Walk track for new plantings.

Each year every student at our school plants a tree or shrub or grass that is then staked with the child’s name, the plant’s scientific and common name and the use of the plant.

These are all added to a now significant data base that tracks the plantings for future learning.

Last year the students planted native butterfly attracting species, including the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines and, with thanks to the previous years of plantings, we had healthy sightings of this endangered butterfly at the school in February 2018.

This year the focus is on planting native Bird Attracting Species and teaching the importance of the fruit, nectar, seeds or insects unique to each plant that provide feasts for individual birds.

One bird that is dear to the hearts of Peachester students is the Black Cockatoo featured in our school emblem.

Therefore the ‘Peachester Yellow’ Banksia Spinulosa will have special pride of place not only in our forest walk but also with plantings this year in our front entrance to the school.

Weeyal is the local Aboriginal name for the Black Cockatoo, derived from its call as it flies through the air being likened to the o kato Coc The Black sound pronounced Wee-arl.

Remember this sound as you hear the cockatoos flying high over our school during tree planting week.

Many thanks to Mrs Dorothy Robb, who passionately dedicates hours of work to this project each year and in turn gives the gift of nature learning to our students.

Tree planting day is an open day for all community members to enjoy our forest walk, and celebrate the planting efforts of the children. You are welcome to come and join the students on Friday July 27 at 1pm.

A great way to support our Enviro Club projects is to purchase a Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Car Sticker.

The stickers are available at Peachester Café, Fine Line Hair Studio, Beerwah, Peachester Fruit Shop and the Peachester State School office.

Jobs for the yard in August

• It’s a good time to fertilise and prune hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer.

• If you have a veggie garden, don’t forget to water it once or twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the drier winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil.

• If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime or dolomite.

• Spray the flowers of your mango tree with a copper-based spray to fight anthracnose disease.

• Plant your new roses now. Bagged and bare-rooted roses are in plentiful supply.

• Fertilise your existing rose bushes by mulching around them with cow manure.

• Keep your strawberries fruiting with a fortnightly feed of fish and seaweed solutions.

Vegetables Plant carrot, lettuce, radish, beetroot, capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, beans, pumpkin, silverbeet, spring onion, choko, squash, sweet potato, tomato, zucchini, broccoli, Asian vegetables, cabbage, peas, spinach, coriander, rocket and turnips.

Flowers Plant marigold, petunia, calendula, bedding begonia, Californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, gaillardia, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, phlox, portulaca, snapdragon, zinnia, amaranthus, salvia and statice.

Look out for fireweed

At this time of the year landowners need to be on the lookout for fireweed, a declared pest plant which is very poisonous to grazing animals.

Introduced from Madagascar, fireweed is a branched herb that grows up to about 60cm high, with serrated leaves and small yellow daisy-like flowers approximately the size of a $2 coin.

If you think you’ve found fireweed, it’s important to contact the Sunshine Coast Council on 5475 7272 so that they can check it out before it has a chance to spread.

A colour factsheet on the toxic weed is available on the Biosecurity Queensland website (www.daf.qld.gov.au – search for fireweed).

Another yellow flowering weed often confused with fireweed is flatweed, which has yellow flowers but leaves which grow flat against the ground.

Tibro’s Netball Club at Glass House has mixed and ladies social netball competitions starting now.

The ladies competition plays on a Monday night with games starting from 6.30pm. Players are still able to register and join the competition, please contact Megan on 0412 115 421.

The mixed comp is played on a Tuesday night and games also start from 6.30pm.

The mixed competition would welcome another team or are happy to take individual registrations with a view to creating another team.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley After two sets, the score was equal, Witta Wagtails didn’t score enough against Maleny Magics to secure a win, but a fun day of tennis was had by all. Thanks to Gerry, Cynthia, Janet and Sonia.

The Wildcats were at home to Nambas No Faults – the wind was incredible but thankfully it died down towards the end. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Jenie came out firing and lead all the way. It was very close in the final set and the end result was also very close. The final score was 5-3 sets and 40-37 which was a great start to the season.

At Ballinger Tennis Courts the temperature reached 26 degrees, it was sunny with a swirly wind. Heavy machinery on the adjoining courts as their grass court was being resurfaced led to interesting conditions for mid-winter tennis!

Whistlers team of Brenda, Donna, Liz and Maree winning the day with 6 sets 43 games to Ballinger Smartini's 2 sets 28 games.

B Grade – in first place was Jon Fairman on 43 points on a count-back from runner-up was Grant Flynn on 43 points and in third place also on 43 points was Trevor Fairley. Wednesday, July 18: our Ladies played in an 18 Hole Single Stableford event in first place was Karen Heading with a score of 41 points, runner-up was Anne Devane on 39 points and in third place was Toni Bishop with 35 points. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Saturday, July 21: Men’s Pennant Round 3, Division 2 were away to Bongaree, not the best day for our Glasshouse boys who were outplayed on all 3 rinks, and the final score going down 42-72. Next week’s game is away to Caboolture Lakes. Division 4 were away to Narangba, it was awesome to see our men have their first win of the season on both rinks, final score 48-31. Next week is home to Bongaree.

Division 5, were home to Bongaree, the home side had a hard fought win to now be sitting to wins from 3 starts, final score 42-38. A big come back from Warren Blackbourne’s side who were 20-1 down and came back hard to only go down by 23-18. Next week’s game is away at Caboolture Lakes.

Congratulations to Di Hume and Rae Farrell who made it through to the ladies pair’s final for Champion of Club Champions which was held at Solander Lake last week. Their first game they beat Kilcoy 26-11. Next they were to good defeating Bribie Island 24-12. The final was held Wednesday and they played the home side, the ladies from Solander lakes only losing by 3 shots 17-14. Top effort ladies, you both must be very proud.

Not so lucky were our men’s team of Warren Blackbourne, (sub Terry Little) and Barry Kirk who lost their game against Caboolture 27-19 Sunday week ago at Solander Lake. Maybe next year boys!

Lindsay Henderson, Mac Townson, Rodney Dick and Ron Wilson won their Champion of Champions Four’s 22-18 against Narangba, with semi-finals at Bribie next week.

The Police Bowls day, the “Iona Challenge”, will be held Sunday, August 12, please place your name down on the sheet at the club if you’re interested in playing, all welcome. Arrive by 12.30pm for a 12.45pm-1pm start. Cost is $12 with hot nibbles after the game. Thursday, July 5 was a Monthly Medal played in very wet conditions by 18 keen ladies.

Winner was Sonia Kenway 72 nett (great in the conditions!) and runner up was Cathy Stone 79 nett. NTPs 2 – Cindy Godfrey, 5 – Felicity Smith, 16 – Leith Barnes and 18 – 2nd shot Sonia Kenway. Sonia also won the putting 26 putts.

Saturday, July 14 was the Mixed Foursomes Championships over 27 holes, with 19 pairs competing the winners were Brendan Griffiths and Sonia Kenway, runners up were Geoff and Sue Williamson on 27. Hole Nett winners were Rod Eccles and Joan Swyny, runners-up were Andrew Betts and Robyn Ryan. 18 Hole winners were Rob and Carol Cork, 9 Hole winners were Bernie Stone and Karen Gannon. Thursday, July 19 was the last of the championship events, with ladies’ foursomes with 25 pairs competing. The winners were Sonia Kenway and Karen Kemp 134 gross, runners-up were Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone on 140.

27 Hole nett winners were Kathy Moffat and Toni Grant 114.5, runners-up were Barb Drury and Di Flint 117.25. 18 Hole nett winners Monica Dangerfield and Libby Gemmel 78. 9 Hole winners Lea Doyle and Sharon Phillips. NTP’s 2 – Monica Dangerfield, 5 – Sue Greentree, 19 – Lesley Eggleston, 20 – Robyn Ryan, 23 – Karen Kemp. BRD went to 119. Sonia Kenway has certainly hit her straps during the Championships having been in the winner’s circle for both of the Foursomes after missing the Ladies event due to injury. Well done Sonia!

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker The grounds and lawns are looking fantastic thanks to a very good turnout at the working bee on Saturday. Thank you to all those who contributed.

Beautiful weather made for almost perfect conditions of play on Sunday. Kath Smith and Stuart Craig played Sally Adams and Robert Elliot. In a tight match Kath and Stuart triumphed 10 hoops to 7. Nick Cram and Vince Carbery also played with Nick winning 16-11. Donna Manning and Sarah Widin had some practice on Lawn 2.

Ken Barker was away for the weekend playing seven very pleasant games at Tweed Heads in the Gold Coast Tweed Region open tournament.

He lost all seven, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He would like to thank the Tweed Heads Croquet Club and the organisers of the tournament for their hospitality.

Our Lochwood team comprising Donna, Nick and Ken played away in Noosa on Wednesday.

Noosa fielded John Olsen and Brian Rudd. In the singles Nick played Brian and Donna played John. Nick began well and was well ahead when Brian engineered a good fightback to finish only three points behind. Nick won 17-14. The other singles game saw Donna win 23-22 in a very close game. Ken and Donna finished hard-tobeat John and Brian 22-18 in the doubles in the afternoon. Thanks to Noosa for providing a great venue and a close competition. The Range, Maleny won the round 3-0.

Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details, contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover The quality of bowls has been exceptional at MBC recently. We have seen a number of great final games in the club championships and some excellent tussles in the lead up games in the open triples competition. Congratulations to all members who have taken part in any of these games. Your participation has added much to the enjoyment of a quality competition for so many members and for that we are thankful. Follow all the details of these games on our app or in newsletters for updated comments on all games.

Thanks to those bowlers who travelled to meet our club commitments at the monthly Woodford triples. Congratulations the John K, Scott A and Curley P for their win on Tuesday. The jackpot was not won so come on down, you could be the lucky one.

Wednesday night saw a good roll-up with the green playing well as a result of the cooler temperatures. Some close games were the order of the night. Mobile Kingdom suffered a shock loss after previous good form in the earlier competition. Form indicates the early favourites could come from the North Maleny boys. Coach has his team hitting their straps early with three wins and a perfect record. It was great to see a few of the teams getting players back and so form over the coming weeks will be more predictable.

Scroungers had good numbers with some new recruits showing good form. Come and join the fun and stay on for the club draw.

Monday has the club hold their monthly pairs and a complete roundup on all the winners will be in the next edition.

Students from Maleny State High will start their Term 3 competition. This competition is sponsored by Maleny Paint and Paper. Thank you to Les and Linda Fawkes.

The club hosted sixty members of the Queensland Caravan Club for bowls, burgers and beers.
