here was plenty going on over the weekend as part of the Glasshouse Country Festival – and it was great to see so much happening in the township of Landsborough.

Being keen to capture the arrival of Ned Kelly in Landsborough - we made sure we got there about 10 minutes early and there were plenty of others with the same idea!

In the lead up to the event – I had kind of wondered about the inclusion of a ‘Ned Kelly’ being captured in Landsborough re-enactment?

And even though we all know that it was in no way historically accurate, it was a winner with the kids (even

Bras n’ Bikes Run – Breast Cancer Fundraiser 2013, the 200km ride will have a smoko stop at Kilcoy and will end at the Kawana Bowls Club for lunch.

The ride will head off from the Ettamogah Pub at 9.00am, registration is from 7.30am. There is a $10.00 donation per bike, with pink bras also available for $2.00 to decorate your bike. All motorcyclists welcome, organised by Girl Torque Sunshine Coast.

This month’s Coastal Village Market will be held at the Beerwah Sportsground from 8.00am – 1.00pm for a day that can only be described as ‘in the pink’ with this month’s focus on breast cancer awareness. Come along and see the variety of stalls with art, craft, plants, clothes, food and more. Festival celebration continues The first weekend of the Glasshouse Country Festival has been a great success, with events held throughout the region. There is still plenty more fun to be had - with next Saturday being very important to Mooloolah as they celbrate the 150th Anniversary of the town.

Old faces will reunite, children will re-live their great grandparent’s school days, photos will re-capture the past lifestyles and the Mooloolah picnic will re-emerge from the early years of the 19th century.

Mooloolah has a colourful past with Indigenous culture, timber getters, pineapple, dairy and banana farming and two hotels.

Event coordinator and community development worker with the Hinterland Community Development Association, Natasha Odgers, said the 150th anniversary is about honouring and celebrating Mooloolah.

“The vision for the Mooloolah Sesquicentenary is to celebrate the heritage, environment, creativity and unique community spirit that is central to the place and people of Mooloolah.

Primary school kids are being called to come to Mooloolah’s original school, now the Mooloolah Community Centre, to step back in time for a special experience of how school was back in colonial days. The historic classroom re-enactment

will be held from 10.30am to 1.00pm.

The kind but strict teacher, Miss DeGars, gives some words of warning for students coming along.

“When you hear the school bell it will be your turn to go to class ... and watch out for the visiting inspector! Don't be late and be sure to have clean nails and your homework done! You will be marched in and put beside anyone who doesn't sit up nice and straight at the long school desks. Let's hope you're not kept in!”

Step back in time to the original days of Mooloolah’s annual Bush Picnic.

Relive the fun with bush dancing, a big brass band, local band ‘Bamboo Rockets’ and other live music. See Indigenous culture, horse showing and join in the traditional activities, such as the three-legged race and tug-o-war.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads have finally decided that traffic lights would be a good idea to improve the safety of the Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way intersection at Glass House Mountains – just not any time soon.

In our edition of September 11, GCNews reported that, as a result of approaches to the Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson by the Twin Cedars Homeowners Association, his Department would be undertaking an assessment of the intersection.

No time was to be wasted, as the Minister stated in his correspondence to them (dated August 29) that the investigation would be completed in two weeks.

Five weeks later (October 4) we were advised that the investigation by Main Roads was still ‘on going’.

Now after seven weeks, Andrew Powell has announced that the Main Roads investigation, undertaken as part of the Safer Roads Sooner (SRS) program, is complete.

The good news is that they consider the intersection needs traffic lights. The bad news is that – contrary to the name ‘Safer Roads Sooner’ – it won’t be happening anytime soon.

According to Andrew Powell, the assessment determined that while signals could be installed at this intersection, due to competing priorities for

SRS funding, the project would have low priority and at this time will not be a reality.

“I reassure the community that I am committed to seeing this project delivered for our region and will continue to work with the Minister and his Department to achieve an outcome that benefits the Glasshouse community as soon as possible,” Mr Powell said.

When GCNews contacted the Twin Cedars Homeowners Association with the ‘good’ news, they commented on the frustration Andrew Powell must be feeling over the Department’s attitude on this issue.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t take another fatality at this busy junction to persuade Main Roads to adjust its priorities and provide the much-needed lights sooner rather than later,” said a spokesperson for the group.

A change of government with a ‘Can Do’ attitude … a respected local member who is also a front bench Minister … and a new federal member who for a long time lived in Glass House.

You’d think with all that going for us, a simple set of traffic lights would be a shoe-in.

Say NO to proposed spaghetti junction

by Jan Kesby, Coordinator, Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Locals may be aware of the proposed ‘spaghetti junction’ road upgrade at the Bruce Highway – Caloundra Road interchange and the proposal to totally realign Steve Irwin Way through the adjoining State Forest.

While most people will agree that the Bruce Highway needs to be upgraded, the benefits of this proposed interchange upgrade just aren’t worth the likely economic, environmental and social fallout. The current plan to clear, fill and bitumen large portions of the State Forest behind the Mooloolah cemetery is unacceptable.

Despite reassurances from the Department of Transport and Ministers Emerson, Powell and Dickson that ‘comprehensive’ ecological assessments have been undertaken, at best, consultants working for the department have done some desktop analysis and spent a day or two walking around the forest.

Fortunately there are many locals who know this forest well and have been bushwalking and bird watching there for years.

During this time they have observed many animals, including threatened species that the governments ‘comprehensive’ surveys seemed to have missed.

Koalas have been seen in the forest by numerous locals with a number of people having to stop traffic in recent years to help them across the Steve Irwin Way. The area to be cleared for the road contains hundreds of Koala food trees.

The proposed interchange upgrade involves importing huge amounts of fill to the site in order to ramp the road sufficiently for the eight metre high flyover of the Bruce Highway. Ironically this section of the new ‘Steve Irwin Way’ will totally destroy this wetland habitat that is home to threatened species of frogs.

Wetlands such as this one are the ‘kidneys’ of our catchment. Covering them with fill and bitumen will do little for our river’s water quality or for local fisheries.

There are also patches of ‘lowland sub-tropical rainforest’ in this forest. The federal government recently listed this ecological community as a national critically endangered ecosystem, such is its rarity.

These patches of rainforest contain the rare Richmond birdwing butterfly vine, and the butterflies breed here every year. Thousands of Sunshine Coast residents have helped in the recovery of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly by planting these caterpillar host vines.

This proposal severely undermines their admirable community conservation efforts.

One of the things that make this forest iconic is the sheer abundance of massive old growth ‘habitat trees’. Each of these trees has multiple hollows, all of which provide annual nesting sites and permanent roosting sites for wildlife such as Gliders, Cockatoos, Parrots and Owls.

Many trees that will be lost if this project proceeds are centuries old. A eucalypt tree generally takes between 100 and 150 years to

develop even the smallest cavity in their limbs. Large hollows like those found on many of the habitat trees within the forest are likely to be in excess of 300 years old!

This makes them twice the age of even the oldest structures made since white settlement.

These trees hold great heritage value. How can you ‘off-set’ trees this old? Simply put, you can’t.

They are irreplaceable!

The few other lucky regions in Australia that still have stands of trees this impressive have seized the opportunity to promote them to tourists by establishing roadside ‘giants of the forest’ walks with information on the local area, its environment and heritage.

There is an alternative interchange design created by a very experienced local engineer, Charlie McMonagle that addresses the traffic and safety requirements of the project, avoids the forest, has much reduced impact on local businesses, avoids inconvenience to Palmview residents and at a much reduced cost.

Unfortunately at this stage Main Roads seems unwilling to listen or look at Charlie’s design.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the Beerwah Aquatic Centre undertook a valuable upgrade as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s ongoing commitment to providing quality community recreation venues.

“Just in time for the busy summer season, the entire 25m pool has been tiled, which is a significant improvement as it means the pool shell now has an expected 30 year low maintenance future instead of needing to close and drain the pool and repaint the surface every couple of years,” he said.

“This facility is an active healthy lifestyle option for Beerwah residents and an important community meeting place.

“The main tile colour chosen is a pale blue which reflects much less glare and makes the water look very inviting indeed.”

Cr Baberowski said swimmers will also benefit from the safety features including new finger grip tiles when they hold onto the edge of the pool.

“The tumble turn area at the end of each lane is also now non-slip providing benefits for those involved in squad training and competition,” he said.

“We have also improved the dive stands so they are solid platforms which will provide better dive angles and, last but not least, the timber deck area has been resealed and looks like new again.”

The Beerwah Aquatic Centre is open through summer Monday to Friday from 5.30am to 6.00pm, Saturday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Sunday from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Located on Roberts Road, Beerwah, the centre contains a heated teaching pool, a heated outdoor 25 metre pool, and a fun toddler's pool and specialises in Learn to Swim programs for infants to mini squads, competitive swimming squads, adult squads and stroke development lessons for adults.

Changing times

With Sunshine Coast Destinations decision to sack their 17 staff that work at the Visitor Information Centres across the Sunshine Coast, a number of the long-term volunteers at Glass House Mountains have decided not to continue with the role.

So last Tuesday a small farewell was organised for the Centre Co-ordinator Jayne Wilson and the volunteers who have resigned.

The volunteers who all attended thanked Jayne for the dedication she has shown to her job and the support she had given them.

The most senior volunteer at 81-years-of-age, said she thought it was great that Jayne had encouraged her to get involved with the centre and assured her that she wasn’t ‘too young’ to take on the tasks.

Look who just dropped in!

Australia Zoo is thrilled to announce the birth of our first giraffe at 10.10am AEST, on Wednesday, October 16.

The female calf, named Skye, was born to Rosie and is the first giraffe to be born in Queensland.

Both Rosie and the calf are healthy and doing extremely well, according to Australia Zoo Africa curator Laurie Pond.

“Our little giraffe has already taken her first wobbly steps after two or three concerted efforts to stand up,” Laurie said.

“She is already suckling and we couldn’t be happier with her progress. Rosie is also doing

well and is a fantastic first-time mum, and seems quite content with her new little calf.”

“Our other two giraffe girls, Sally and Penny, are also expecting calves in the next few months.”

Recently Year 11 students from Glasshouse Country Christian College and Beerwah State High School attended Corbould Park Raceway for the annual RYDA ‘Rotary Youth Driver Awareness’ program conducted by the Rotary Clubs of Caloundra Pacific, Caloundra, Kawana Waters and Glasshouse Mountains.

The program includes five presentations and promotes the responsibility of owning and maintaining a motor vehicle for students in Year 11 who are about to embark on becoming drivers.

Police gave an in-depth account about road rules, alcohol, speed hazard distractions and risks and also important information about fatigue, alcohol and medication. They also stressed the importance of having a back-up plan so as you are not tempted to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

Another part of the course involved the students going in a car to gauge stopping distances where they witnessed actually stopping 10km an hour faster than normal speed. This was demonstrated graphically with a dummy.

Students also learnt about the importance of maintaining the condition of their vehicles such as tyres, brakes, steering, lights etc. and everything associated with safety of the driver / passengers and other road users.

A crash survivor who is in a wheel chair for the rest of his life talked to the students. Young people sometimes think they are indestructible, but in an instant, a lapse in judgement could result in a car crash which could result in that outcome.

Remember, driving is a full time job. If you text, talk on mobile phones, or become distracted it only takes a second to crash. People die on our roads every day and the trauma for the families and loved ones is terrible. The RYDA program is there to help students, to prepare them for their lifetime of driving and hopefully help to save lives.

PLACE+ Beerwah Draft Public Domain Masterplan

In August 2012, Council engaged with traders, property owners and community reference groups to provide input into the master planning process for Beerwah.

Council has now completed the Draft Public Domain Masterplan – this plan aims to reflect the vision, priorities and aspirations of the community, which emerged through the engagement process.

Council invites the community to a series of ‘drop in sessions’, to launch and present the Draft Masterplan for community review and feedback.

Leanda makes the assessments through one-onone consultations where she uses her skills as a nutritionist, iridologist, bowen and massage therapist, as well as undertaking mineral analysis, and checking your blood pressure.

When explaining her process she uses the example of when someone comes in to see her and asks for advice on swelling in the knee. While she may be able to offer a product to help with it, she would also want to look at what has been going on in the body to cause it and whether there is something else needed to address the issue in the long term.

“I won’t just make things look pretty, I will transform your ideas into tangible products offering eye-catching, effective designs to communicate the marketing message you want,” Shelly said.

Black belt for Codey

Beerwah High School student, Codey Madden, was successful at the recent Action Day in attaining her Junior Black Belt in Rhee Tae Kwon-Do. Codey was personally assessed and promoted by World Master Chong Chul Rhee.

Master Rhee is the founder of Tae Kwon-Do in Australia and President of the Tae Kwon-Do Instructors' Federation of Australia and New Zealand and visits the Sunshine Coast every three months to assess and upgrade students like Codey.

Codey demonstrated to Master Rhee her knowledge of the Art of Rhee Tae Kwon-Do exhibiting great technique in her performance of a complicated 30 move pattern, a gruelling free sparring session against multiple opponents followed by a board breaking sequence showing that Codey has learnt the Art of Self Defense.

Treasures required for Garage Sale Planning is underway for a massive fundraising garage sale to be held in early November as a fundraiser at Landsborough.

The event is being organised by Kristy Christopher to raise funds to assist with installing a pool for hydrotherapy for her baby niece Zahlia who suffers from a very rare condition called Aicardi Syndrome.

Having Aicardi Syndrome can mean the absence (complete or partial) of the part of the brain which sits between the right and left sides and allows the right side to communicate with the left.

Kristy is putting the word out for locals who would be happy to donate items small and large that are suitable for a garage sale. They currently have a drop off point in Landsborough and Mooloolah and are happy to pick up in other areas.

Thanks for a job well done Last weekend GCNews brought you some ‘social pics’ of Lorna and Graham Buxton being thanked for the volunteer work they have contributed to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club over the last 18 years.

Lorna and Graham travelled from North Queensland to Glass House Mountains in 1994 staying temporarily in a caravan, while they were deciding on where they would settle. Soon after arriving they read about the tennis club in Glasshouse Country News. They met Sue Fullerton at the new tennis courts at Glasshouse Mountains Sportsclub, and Lorna became involved in the tennis club.

They both liked the sports club and the members, as well as the local area, so they decided it was the best place in Australia and they made it their home.

Lorna was a committee member of the tennis club during that time, and was involved in organising social and competition tennis. Graham and I also kept courts and surrounds well kept, she said.

“In all this time, we were involved in canteen duties and functions, especially Christmas month when we regularly set up for three different functions in one day,” Lorna said.

“We were there for week long soccer, the start of touch footy carnivals, the rodeos and GMAN 100 mile run events.

“We cleaned and helped anywhere, anytime when asked. Graham was doing office work when Gary Watts was manager, he also has worked tirelessly for Lions Club and View Club, saving both the sports club and these clubs an extra wage,” Lorna said.

Lorna started the multi draw and selling raffles Thursday and Friday nights and over the years has raised thousands of dollars for the different clubs based at the Sportsclub.

“We both have received certificates of appreciation from various clubs which encouraged us to continue volunteering,” Lorna said.

On the night of their farewell the club President, Ken Fullerton thanked the couple sincerely for all of their efforts over the years of their involvement.

School News Local author has lots of new fans Regular readers of GCNews would remember our story about local author Cathy Bauman.

Cathy recently visited the Goodstart Early Learning Centre Glass House Mountains and shared her four lovely books with the children.

She allowed all the children to ask questions about the books after she had read them and answered all their questions.

The children loved listening to Cathy and were very happy when at the end of the session Cathy so kindly donated her books to the centre.

The children and staff at would like to express their gratitude to Cathy for sharing not only her lovely books but also her time.

Volunteers are love in action

When people ask why aren’t volunteers paid, the answer is always because volunteers are ‘priceless’. Volunteers are the backbone of every organisation and this is very true at Glasshouse Country Christian College.

Volunteers help in the kitchen garden, the library, the classrooms, the uniform shop, with sports activities and carnivals, on the P and F, fundraising, in the tuckshop and much more.

Each year GCCC pays homage to its volunteers with a special lunch and a small gift. This year the lunch was held at Beerwah Community Hall and was catered by the GCCC’s very talented hospitality students.

Tables were decorated in blue with yellow roses and a scrumptious buffet feast was prepared.

Main courses included baked salmon with a light crumb and herb topping, braised lamb, stuffed chicken breasts, Asian salads, side dishes and a different sauce or condiment for every dish.

Just when the volunteers thought they couldn’t fit any more in, dessert was served. The choice was between a deliciously moist French chocolate brownie with a peanut butterscotch sauce and a wickedly creamy cheesecake with pink candy floss topping. It was a lovely day made all the more special by having such wonderful volunteers as the honoured guests.

For a number of years, Mooloolah local Debbie Peters Registered calmbirth® practitioner has been running ‘Calmbirth Pre Natal Education Program’ from her home in Mooloolah. She offers weekend workshops for people from all over the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and throughout the state.

However it was only earlier this year that the first Mooloolah calmbirth baby was born at Nambour, the gorgeous Satori was born to parents Kelly and Dan White.

Debbie explained that the Calmbirth Pre Natal Education Program was established in 2005 to assist mothers to feel calm and in control, to trust their bodies and the process of childbirth.

“The program guides couples during the prenatal period to give them knowledge and skills to create their own unique birth experience,” Debbie said.

Kelly and Dan White, were glad they did the calmbirth course in preparation for their baby’s birth.

Their daughter Satori Imogen White was born at Nambour Hospital via C-section on May 25, after a long labour, which had its unexpected challenges along the way.

“In the end I experienced every kind of birth,” said Satori’s mum, Kelly. “She’s such a chilled out baby, it doesn’t seem like the events have

affected her at all, and we are closer together as a result.”

Childbirth can be one of life’s most empowering experiences, said Debbie.

“Couples simply need the practical skills and confidence to do it their way,” she said.

Debbie runs the courses every weekend from 9.00am – 5.00pm on Saturday and Sunday or over five evening session and on Sunday from 7.00pm – 9.30pm.

Recently the Superdads ran a barbecue at the Beerwah State High School one evening, inviting a bunch of dads from the local primary and high schools to attend. We had dads from all walks of life who came along for a feed and a chat - electricians, computer techs, fire officers…

We wanted to ask these dads for their opinions on what some of the things are that affect fathers nowadays.

The dads were very keen to talk (something people often don’t acknowledge) and had real concerns about the increasingly challenging role of being a dad. The dads all had at least one thing in common – they loved their kids and wanted to be a good dad.

We were quite surprised with some of the responses. Some of the things we talked about were – struggling to find time for their kids; wanting to get personal development to help be a better dad; the hassles that come from there being vastly different parenting styles in the community; teaching kids respect and values; helping kids understand where things come from e.g. food in the supermarket; and wanting an opportunity to connect with other dads and families.

We were able to use some of this feedback to help us with putting a few resources on our website, but we would like to hear from other dads about what works for you as a dad? What do you think the community could do to encourage dads more? What would be some of the things that dads face nowadays that may be they didn’t have to in previous generations?

You can contact us via the website www.superdads.com.au and there are some resources on there that may be of use to you and other dads that you know. In 2014 we are planning on organising monthly events where any dad can come along and connect with others e.g. barbecues, learn to make pasta nights, guest speakers etc. Plus we may see you at a gig somewhere around the traps.

Disco action for kids Kiddo Disco This month the Beerwah RSL will hold the first of their monthly ‘Kiddo Discos’ this Friday night, October 25 for kids 5 – 12 years. The event will run between 6.00pm – 8.00pm in their function room and will be fully supervised. Playgroup at Mooloolah Mooloolah Valley Community Playgroup is held each week at the Mooloolah School Outside School Hours Care building (next door to pool) 48 Kings Road, Mooloolah Valley. Playgroup is for all ages (babies to pre-school and caregivers).

It is a great way for children to meet up and play and for the parents to meet up with other local parents.

For the past couple of months James and Sandra at Latte Da Café have been opening for dinner on a Friday and Saturday night, which is making locals happy to have another choice for casual ‘byo’ dining.

Brownie and I popped in for the first time recently and I have to say they have come up with a great menu, with most of the main meals being priced under $20.00. The most expensive item was $24.95 and that was the Seafood Cacciucco (prawns, fish, crab, calamari, mussels and scallops) in a rich tomato broth with char grilled bread. If you are a seafood lover like Brownie, this was a total winner.

As I cannot cook a decent steak it is always my first choice when we eat out and the 300g rib fillet steak with potato rosti, mushroom and bean

jus and vegies for $23.90 was excellent.

James said that they like to source their meat locally and have been really pleased with the meat they have supplied by Beerwah Meats.

On the night we went, there was a big group sitting at the tables next to us, having a celebration – so being able to rock up with your eskies seemed to work well for them!

What I most enjoy about sitting next to a big group (other than the numerous conversations to eavesdrop on) is that it’s a good way to get a look at other meals on the menu, as they’re brought out to the table. So I have already decided what I'm having next time.

Mooloolah pool open for business

In 2012 the Mooloolah Pool was advised by the Sunshine Coast Council that operational funding for pool facilities would no longer be available.

As this funding represented the majority of the operational budget, the pool was forced to close down.

Understanding the importance of this facility to the community, in particular the Mooloolah State School, I was keen to facilitate a meeting with the Mooloolah Community Association, Education Queensland and Council.

It was at this meeting the community made it very clear that the pool would not be closing forever.

The pool opened for business on October 12, 2013 after an impressive facelift and I would like to sincerely congratulate the Progress Association for passionately fighting to keep the pool open.

What a great example of community minded people working together with positive energy to achieve real and tangible outcomes for their community.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new pool Managers Andrew Cowan and Georgina Taylor to the role, and to wish them all the best with this new venture that adds so much value to the Mooloolah community.

Andrew and Georgina held an open day on Saturday, October 12 and were delighted with the number of people who came to celebrate the opening of this facility.

The pool now offers the community swimming lessons for all age brackets and also has squad training for all groups from mini’s through to seniors. You may have already seen the advertising for a new campaign the State Government has launched to encourage our community to ‘Get Ready’ ahead of storm season.

This campaign focuses on encouraging the community to know your own local risks, anticipate what sorts of things could happen in your local area and helps you to make a plan for your family should you find yourselves in a dangerous situation.

Former Schools Remembered

Among the many small schools which appeared throughout the Sunshine Coast hinterland in the early 20th century were Crohamhurst and Commissioner's Flat State Schools.

As was often the case in country areas, where distance from the nearest school proved a challenge for many families, both these schools were established in response to community pressure. After letters to the Department of Public Instruction, and even a public subscription list to raise funds, Commissioner's Flat School opened on January 22, 1912.

There were 19 students enrolled on the first day (listed oldest to youngest in Admission Register): Janet Cochran, Catherine Ferris, Marian Page, Herbert Kropp, Margaret Page, Edward Brown, William Brown, Mary Jane Ferris, John Charles Ferris, Robert Kropp, John Simpson, Ada Pearl Page, John Winkel, Stanley Winkel, William Cochran, Mary Cochran, Ernest Kropp, Olive Kropp and Horace Page.

When Crohamhurst State School opened on July 21, 1913, the first day enrolments were: Mabel Collins, Mary Sutherland, Gladys Collins, Elizabeth Sutherland, May Roycroft, Oscar Ostwald, Alice Maloney, Gertrude Ostwald, Marion Jones, Lionel Collins, Gordon Craig, Elsie Sutherland, Ursula Jones, Marjorie Buchanan, Bernice Collins, Albert Ostwald, John Giblin, Edward Giblin and Waldemar Breton.

Enrolments fluctuated, and Crohamhurst remained a very small school; however when it closed in 1960, a total of 256 children had attended. Commissioner’s Flat continued much longer, although always as a one-teacher school, and finally closed at the end of 1972.

Most children continued their education at Woodford or Peachester.

While the school buildings have disappeared, memories remain strong. Peachester History Committee is hosting a reunion to provide an opportunity for anyone connected with either of these small schools – past students, or their families – to come back, meet old friends, and share those memories.

The Centenary Reunion will be held at the Peachester Hall on Sunday, November 3, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Photographs and memorabilia from the PHC collection will be on display, and the organisers would love to include extra items contributed by visitors.

The program will include an opportunity for former students and teachers to tell their stories.

There will be tea, coffee and light refreshments available all day, also a copying and printing service, and a range of local history books for sale.

Good feed

To the family who found Beerwah RSL food prices left a bad taste in their mouths, I have a great place to tell you about. On Tuesday family and friends booked into the TAFE bistro EcoBlue at Mountain Creek. This is a place designed to give on the job training to wait staff in food, beverage and food service. The chefs are qualified so I can tell you it is the best meal we have all eaten out in a very long time.

The menu changes regularly as the food is determined by some of what the apprentice / trainee chefs have to learn i.e. they had to do pastry this week and made frangipani tarts.

The chefs make the menu for service using such items.

And the prices – OMG! A parmesan crusted lamb rack with mash and vegetables was just $10.00.

That was the most expensive main of the day.

Barramundi $9.00, and Curry or Chicken breast was $8.00.

If you are keen for an amazing feed for the best prices I’ve seen and you are happy to have the young students practice what they learn in the classroom it is well worth the $10.00 it will cost to drive there from our region. If you are an elderly couple who prefers a solid meal at lunch, get some friends together and make this trip.

I can’t see how anyone could be disappointed with the price, quality and enthusiasm of all the staff. My dad is still dreaming about the $5.00 green lipped mussels he had for entrée.

Re: Green Waste Craziness, October 9, GCNews

I’m with you Graham Anstis, however, I don’t believe forcing people to have a Kerb Side Green waste bin is the answer, as there will be a whole bunch of rules and regulations that apply to what you can and can’t put in them.

Also in most cases, they would be full after just pruning a couple of small bushes. Most people in the area live on acreage, so in my opinion, kerbside green waste bins in this area are nothing but a waste of money.

I don’t know about the rest of the rate payers in the Hinterland, but I am getting fed up with all the stupid bloody rules these clowns in council are coming up with.

On Wednesday, October 15, I went to the recycling depot in Beerwah with a ute and a trailer loaded with the remnants of some palm trees I had removed.

I was told by the staff that there were three or four pieces that were bigger than 30cm, and I would have to bring them home and cut them into smaller pieces so the mulching machine didn’t clog up, I cannot believe this.

I have seen that machine chew up large gum

trees and spit them out like they were nothing more than a handful of twigs, meanwhile I still got charged the full amount to dump what they deemed as being ‘legal size’. Since when in the history of mankind has there been a ‘legal size’ attributed to rubbish?

I am now convinced that it is nothing more than revenue raising, and council don’t give a damn about providing a service to the rate payers.

We are seen as nothing but cash cows, and I believe we should all get together and let them know that we should be treated better. They seem to forget that ‘we the people’, put them into their positions and ‘we the people’ can soon render them unemployed.

Woolies woes

When my husband read the letter about Woolworths Beerwah from a GCNews reader at Glenview, he came and asked me had we moved to Glenview without telling him!

Seriously though, I even asked the manager of Woolworths, Chancellor Park “do you have degrees of stores as Beerwah is so far below par?” He assured me they didn't, but one look tells me all managers are not equal.

I took the trouble to fill in a survey from Woolworths recently and expressed my disappointment very loudly so I can only hope upper management take the trouble to read the feedback.

Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centre problems

Firstly, who paid for the buildings, especially the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre building at Glass House Mountains? That would be both rate payers and tax payers.

Who are the backbone of the centre? The volunteers.

Who is this CEO Simon Ambrose?

Oh yes, he is the CEO who cannot provide answers to very sensible and straight forward questions.

How the bloody heck would a person of his apparent intelligence get that position in the first place?

For a CEO to sack all paid staff who run the Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centres and then have no bright ideas re the real and imminent need for volunteers to run these centres, without the paid staff, and from what I hear, did a sterling job throughout the Sunshine Coast area it just doesn't make sense.

As for volunteers, they are the backbone of any small organisation. I would not even consider giving my time to this organisation or any other run by a person such as CEO Simon Ambrose and I do not even know him.

I am horrified to read (GCNews October 16) that the Visitor Information Centre at Glass House Mountains might close.

The Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) excuse is that the Centre might close if there were insufficient volunteers. Typical to blame the hard working volunteers for their problems.

Surely SCDL realise that the Glass House Visitor Information Centre is a gateway to the entire Sunshine Coast and not just for visitors to the Glass House area.

The Sunshine Coast Council appointed the board of SCDL and I presume that there is a written agreement between the council and SCDL on the operation of the Centre.

Let us all write to the SCDL Board of Directors, and Council through our Councillor Rick Baberowski. We must galvanise action on this very important issue.

Re: Visitor Information Centre may close

I am saddened by the changes to the operation of the Tourism Information Centre at Glass House.

It seems only a few short years ago when the caravan information unit at Matthew Flinders Park on Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains, was replaced by a handsome new tourism and interpretative centre at Rotary Settlers Park, Glass House.

The multi-purpose building, costing more than a million dollars of federal, state and council funds, has obviously been a successful focal point for visitors and the community in general.

Perhaps electronic information and booking methods have taken their toll on traditional

‘information centres.’

Glasshouse car enthusiasts Derek Prentice and Lloyd Crossley and I are happy to do our bit for local tourism with a visit to northern NSW last weekend (October 19 - 20), collecting some brochures from the Glass House centre to hand out.

The visit was a familiarisation call at Murwillumbah, Casino and Kyogle with a view to arranging a large-scale Sunshine Coast ‘vintage/veteran car tour’ to that region in September next year.

This visit is planned to include a return trip to Queensland via the 40-year-old spectacular Lions Road scenic route north of Kyogle.

As we set off on this promotional tour, it was interesting to note that our info centre effort went back to March 2002, when Caloundra Council, in conjunction with Glass House Country Tourism, established the information service at Matthew Flinders Park under the Regional Assistance Program.

Glass House Country Tourism managed and co-ordinated the service with RAP funds until October 2002 when Council provided a small annual budget to keep the service operating, with the assistance from a large pool of volunteers.

Division 1 councillor Anna Grosskreutz worked closely with state MP Caroline Male to achieve their goal of the new centre, described as the ‘pride and joy of the Glasshouse country region.’

I trust that a working solution can be found for the continuing operation and manning of this significant community asset.

We were quite happy in our van down the road where Alex drove for miles collecting brochures and busloads of oldies would stop and share their baked yummies, then the trucks came and it became very unpleasant.

A new centre was built and a day asking for more volunteers, since numbers dwindled, as we were expected to take bookings, use the till, sell ice creams ... It was a Centre to be proud of and visitor numbers soared from 100 or so a week to thousands.

Helping happy holiday makers has been very enjoyable.

Of course the more stupid decisions were made, the more volunteers were lost. Two shifts a day – 9.00am – 1.00pm and 1.00pm – 5.00pm went to reduced opening hours, 9.00am – 3.00pm and now of course there aren't enough volunteers to fill the roster.

What a joke! And a ridiculous waste of our rates!

For the no doubt small cost of Jayne's wages, the final nail has been hammered into the information centre's coffin.

Happenings Out and About Glasshouse Country Festival (October 18 – November 2) in full swing The steam train from Brisbane puffed its way through the towns. Mobs joined the Mooloolah Mob to walk via the old train tunnel to the Landsborough Museum. Mooloolah was buzzing with people at the Pit Stop Brunch.

The Glass House Neighbourhood Centre was revitalised with lots of car boot market bargain hunters and live music. The William Landsborough Day Festival drew the crowds for some fun with Mr Landsborough and Ned Kelly.

Families celebrated Children’s Week at the Landsborough State School. The Beerwah Skate Park was overflowing with boarders and the Hinterland Relay for Life filled the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. An impressive array of local art was also on show in Beerwah.

The $2 million tree

In a story this week on page 5 by Jan Kesby from Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare, she talks about the loss of habitat trees and how this affects hollow-dwelling native animals.

Jan says that it takes a very long time for eucalypt trees to mature to the point where they have hollows good enough for animals to live and nest in.

In our increasingly urbanised environment, the larger older trees tend to be the first ones cut down for ‘safety’ reasons. They have dead branches, may have damaged trunks and tend to be the target for removal and replacement with ‘nice new trees’.

Across eastern Australia there are 87 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles and 55 species of mammals that will use tree hollows for shelter and / or nesting. Without these hollows, they’ve either got no place to live and breed, or end up making do with our roof spaces and sheds.

This includes bats, sugar gliders, frogs, geckos, owls, parrots, wood ducks, pythons, kookaburras, and kingfishers – just to name a few.

Alan Franks, from Hollow Log Homes (www.hollowloghomes.com) is a national authority on providing artificial nesting hollows for our wildlife. His well respected Cambroon-based business researches, develops, designs, constructs and installs nesting boxes.

He has worked out that a large 200 year old tree can have up to 20 nesting hollows. If that tree were cut down, we would need to provide those 20 hollows as nesting boxes for the next 200 years until a new tree was old enough to develop that many homes for native animals again.

The 20 nesting boxes would need to be maintained and replaced every 10 years. Taking into account inflation, Alan has worked out that this would cost over $2 million.

If you’ve got a couple of acres with say five of these trees – that means you’re block has $10 million of habitat trees. That’s some major investment that just gets chopped down, chipped or burnt.

We can all look to helping out our local wildlife by putting up one, two or more nesting boxes in our backyards.

We should look to vary them – so there is something for small possums, parrots, large possum and large birds (like kookaburras). And let’s not forget the specialised box for insect eating microbats.

I’ve got four boxes on my acre and a quarter block. I put a new one up every other year – so I’m due for a new one soon – and I’m going to try the bat box.

Occasionally you’ll need to check that the boxes are all OK and that the lid hasn’t come off or the box taken over by Indian Myna Birds or feral bees.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Father Kevin Smith Catholic Church I love all of Sandra Bullock’s movies so I was keen to see her latest film, ‘Gravity’ where Sandra co-stars with George Clooney. One of the many amazing aspects of Gravity is that the story takes place amidst no gravity whatsoever. Set hundreds of kilometres above the earth there is no oxygen, no sound (since there is nothing through which sound can travel) and no way of judging with the naked eye speed or distance. The views of earth are spectacular and the vastness of space beyond our comprehension.

Of course in the absence of gravity one cannot walk in the usual way, or confidently move from one place to another. Instead you spin and turn and are tossed around with little control. In the movie, disaster strikes and all the usual supports disappear. The crew is totally isolated from Houston.

by feelings of isolation or helplessness. Illness, death of a loved one, uncertainty in employment, or difficulties in a relationship can often mean that the simplest things that we have taken for granted now become impossible tasks requiring a huge effort. Quite suddenly it seems the supports have disappeared and one is lost amidst darkness and the vast fast moving world.

Who or what gives us a sense of direction when the usual compass has gone or is temporarily misplaced? Who or what will provide some meaning and purpose when it seems we are drifting along in isolation or tumbling out of control? With my last breath do I step into a vastness of empty space? Or is the one who has quietly accompanied me, steadied the faltering steps, who has provided some balance and meaning while all else tossed me about, the one who in fact has taken that very same journey before me; will He do what He has always done?

He will love me so much that the vastness is filled and true meaning is revealed.

Fair play for BeeGees

Contributed by John Hesse It gives me great pleasure to advise that the Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club was recently presented with the Fair Play award at the annual Sunshine Coast Football dinner.

This award is presented to the club that has the least amount of disciplinary actions throughout the season.

Congratulations to all of our teams for their contribution towards this achievement and for their spirit of fair play.

Our club prides itself on being a community based club run by volunteers and now that the season has come to an end we would like to thank all of our volunteers who pitched in to make the club run. Without you we could not get teams on the field.

Our club AGM is being held from 6.30pm on November 11 at the Glass House Sports Club, Steve Irwin Way and we are always looking for new people to become actively involved in the running of the club.

It’s a fun way of introducing cricket to both boys and girls aged five -10 years. The registration fee is $65.00. Each participant receives a plastic bat, soft ball, t-shirt, bucket hat and backpack.

The club is holding a registration day on Saturday, October 26 from 12.00noon – 3.00pm at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club.

Shanoa Russell boxed willingly, going down in a brutal contest in the 66 kg division. Leroy Macnamara started his bout strongly in the 60 kg division before being out pointed by a slick opponent in the final two rounds; Leroy will take a lot out of the experience.

Jake Molloy boxed well in the 38 kg division going down to an quality opponent with experience being the telling factor in a split decision fight.

In the 40 kg division, Dana Coolwell in his first fight, defeated an opponent with four fights experience in a willing and entertaining bout that had the crowd on their feet. Very proud of all the boys.

We will now head to the Impact Boxing Academy Tournament on November 2 at Cooroy.

Contributed by Sue Williamson Beerwah 2013, Lady Club Champion, Andrea Campbell, proved once again the Champion she is by winning the North Coast Zone Ladies Golf Association, 27 holes Silver and Bronze Closed Championships, held last Friday, at Gympie.

Windy conditions didn't stop 57 lady golfers competing in last Thursday's Single Stableford event at Beerwah.

Jo Evans won Division 1 with a great score of 43 points, runner up was Mavis Brimelow, achieving her personal best score of 39 points.

Division 2 winner was Joan Fletcher, who won on a count back with 43 points and Runner up was Julie Hughes. Pin shots were won by Lyn Nichols on the 2nd, Teresa Keast on the 5th, Carol Fraser on the 16th and Andrea Campbell on the 18th. The ball rundown went to 35 points.
