ast Friday morning I was invited along to the Peachester CWA’s 70th Birthday celebration.

While the group’s membership is small, and definitely on the more mature side, they are definitely a dynamic bunch who contributes much to our community.

CWA is synonymous with wonderful craft work, inspiring cooking and delicate floral work, however what I loved hearing about the most was the influence that CWA has had over the years and the different projects they have been involved in.

The group’s President Coral Beutel shared stories of the things they had achieved through their determined lobbying or in Coral’s words, “if you whinge enough you get things done.”

Well they have definitely been successful and like all CWA’s around the country they are keen to recruit new younger members to continue their momentum.

Local News $1M for Mary Cairncross Last Friday, Sunshine Coast Council welcomed a Federal Government announcement that it has been successful in obtaining a $1 million Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund grant towards the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Building Renewal Project.

The successful funding application is a key part of long-term project to build a world-class discovery centre at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

The Queensland Tourism Infrastructure fund is part of the Commonwealth’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program, which provides Queensland with $7.8 million to be invested in local projects over four years.

Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP said that the Federal funding would give tourism in the region a boost.

“Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is truly a special place in our Hinterland and I am very pleased that the area will now be further enhanced as a result of this funding announcement,” Mr Brough said.

“Tourists and locals, including the wonderful volunteers of the Reserve, will benefit greatly from this project and I am happy to see all three levels of government working together for the betterment of our region.”

The new discovery centre will cater for increased numbers of visitors who are attracted to and are keen to learn about the area’s natural scenic beauty, thereby reducing the impacts on the rainforest walking tracks.

The new ‘Academic & Cultural Cup’ draws on the same sporting house culture and team spirit that has seen Beerwah High dominate the sporting fields for two decades.

This year our four school houses, Miketeebumulgrai, Ngungun, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla have been vying for the title of ‘2015 Academic & Cultural Cup Champions’.

Last Friday, the spectacular, homemade perennial cup was crowned with a mortar board in the house colours of our inaugural champion house; congratulations Tunbubudla!

After the awarding of almost 25,000 points, it is remarkable that our top two teams were separated by a mere 23 points, with the lead changing several times throughout the year.

Year level male and female champions were also awarded, with the victorious students having the honour of signing their name next to their achievement in the ‘Scholastic Almanac’; a beautiful leather bound book of parchment paper that will provide a cherished record of our champion students and points earned.

From jazz to hip-hop, a dash of Monty Python, a sprinkle of sublime vocal pop harmonies and a burst of (almost) deafening rock music, the entertainment, awards and list of achievements provided a fitting summary and reminder of the academic and cultural year that was.

The future is certainly looking very sparkly.

Teachers and students are enthused by the many Academic & Cultural Cup specific events that are on the cards for 2016. This year’s ‘spelling bee tennis tournament’ was certainly embraced by all. Passion for all things cultural and academic is taking off at BSHS.

Kids and parents enjoy ‘This & That’ Bestselling author, Mem Fox and illustrator, Judy Horacek held a very special storytime last Wednesday at the Maleny Community Centre.

The duo was in Maleny for the only Sunshine Coast stop on their nation-wide launch of their new book, ‘This & That’.

Hosted by Rosetta Books, the last minute venue change meant that an even larger crowd of wide-eyed children and adults were witness to the magic behind some of Australia’s best loved children’s stories.

Mem and Judy delighted audiences with a reading of their new book, ‘This & That’, followed by their other books together, ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ and ‘Good Night, Sleep Tight’, with Mem very energetically acting out some of

the stories. She even managed to find the Green Sheep, being held very tightly by a little girl in the audience.

Question time was equally as entertaining with Mem and Judy sharing their love of reading with the audience.

Mem’s advice to the parents and educators in the room was to read at least three books a day to your children, from when they are two days old until they go to school.

“I know people might be daunted by the thought of reading three books a day, but they don’t have to be long and it will change their lives forever.

Personally, I find reading to kids to be just divine!

They are so funny and they always smell so good after a bath,” she said.

In fact, the inspiration for ‘This & That’ came from Mem trying to get her own three-year-old grandson in to bed by promising to tell him stories of this ... and of that.

Mem says though, it is a very different story now, with Judy completely rearranging the verses before illustrating the book.

“That’s what’s so rare about the collaboration between Judy and myself,” says Mem, “no other illustrator could get away with changing the script, but she made it much more interesting.”

“Brilliant ... actually,” quipped Judy.

Wonderful opportunity for Allycia Former Maleny High School student 20-year-old Allycia Staples is heading off for an opportunity of a lifetime as an Artist in Residence with Accessible Arts Australia's Catalyst Program at Carriageworks in Sydney.

Having been born with a rare chromosome deletion on the 18th chromosome, Allycia's prognosis was bleak, due to the multiple physical and intellectual challenges the condition presents.

However she has grown and continued to thrive, having benefited greatly, from her involvement with Dance and the Performing Arts.

This highly competitive residency is a 12 month program where Allycia will be mentored by some of Australia's finest performing artists and will be assisted in mapping out her future career path.

Cathy Freeman from the Performing and Creative Arts Team at Nambour based disability service, Spiral, will be accompanying Allycia as her support person.

"Together we will be engaging with leading performers and learning from the best. We're excited about bringing all our knowledge back to share with our emerging talent here on the Coast," she said.

From Allycia's perspective, it is another opportunity to perform.

"I just love being on the stage and have loved dancing since I was little," she said.

Maleny High School teacher, Cath Grey was one of many who supported Allycia, by ensuring that she could complete dance as a Year 12 subject by supporting her with a modified curriculum. Cath was always one of Allycia's greatest fans.

After the week-long residency Allycia will then have bi monthly skype sessions with a mentor and will then return to Sydney in 2016 to complete the residency and perform her final piece.

A scattering of dead leaves on the ground glow with the remnants of their past lives and the warmth of transitioning into their next life. The shy King Parrot stops for a brief moment to open his wings and expose his glowing red chest before flitting back into the forest again. The sun shining through a ceiling of densely layered foliage generates a patterned tonal range of extraordinary depth, even the Raven’s sleek plumage glints with an insularity matched only by the insolence that slips through the guard of his wary eye!

Have your say on the future of Maleny recreation facilities The Maleny Recreation Draft Master Plan 20152030 which covers the Maleny Showgrounds, Witta Sportsground and the sport and recreation uses across the Maleny Community Precinct, is now open for comment.

This opportunity will allow residents and the sport and recreation community clubs and groups to provide their feedback on a series of recommendations.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said they want to ensure the project will be consistent with community demand and meets the needs of clubs and organisations within the Maleny locality and the wider region.

“The community now has the opportunity to view and discuss the draft Master Plan with council representatives and planning consultants on Thursday, October 29 from 3.00pm to 6.00pm at the Maleny IGA. “It is important to note council has not made a commitment to fund all recommendations from the Maleny Recreation Master Plan and its implementation will require external funding assistance.

“It is vital to have a well-researched plan in place to ensure council is aware of Maleny’s needs and take advantage of funding opportunities as they arise.

“This is an important project for Maleny and we look forward to hearing from residents.”

Tour de Stroke awareness ride

Seventeen-year-old teenager Josh Goyne is on an incredible mission to raise awareness and support for stroke sufferers. Inspired by his Peachester grandfather Barry Maxwell Graham who sadly passed away in August last year after his sixth stroke - Josh has embarked on a 2000+km bike ride from Canberra to the Sunshine Coast.

Josh and his team of riders left Canberra on Saturday, October 10. The ‘Tour de Stroke’ bike ride will travel up through inland and coastal NSW to the Gold Coast and then on through Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast.

The awareness campaign and fundraiser will have taken two weeks to complete – with the final destination being his grandfather’s farm at Elsa Court, Peachester. Josh and the team are expected to arrive at lunchtime this Saturday.

Hoping to raise funds, as well as awareness for the critical signs of those suffering from stroke, Josh has established the charity ‘Stroke Support and Awareness Australia’. The charity aims to help rehabilitate those affected by stroke in their own home by providing support, counselling and practical assistance to allow sufferers to regain independence.

Australia Zoo welcomes baby rhinoceros!

Australia Zoo is thrilled to announce that on Sunday, October 11, their beloved Caballe the rhinoceros welcomed another baby – a precious male calf. This new addition is the fourth rhino baby to be born at the Zoo in four years!

After a labour that lasted only two hours, both Caballe and her new baby are doing well and will be taking some time out to bond behind the scenes before joining the rest of our evergrowing rhino family.

With a rhino gestation period totalling 17 months, this long-awaited birth signifies a successful rhino breeding program at Australia Zoo, helping us highlight the plight of rhinos in the wild.

A special lunch was organised by the Peachester CWA last week celebrating 70 years since they were established. One of the highlights of the day were the displays of the incredible craft work created by members over the years, as well as a historical display of the group's history, and the reading aloud of the minutes of their first meeting on October 16, 1945. At that meeting it was decided that they would meet on the first Thursday of each month which has continued on to this day.

Rally for Dave a winner

On Sunday, October 4 ‘Rally for Dave’ saw 34 cars set off from the Maleny Showgrounds for a fundraising Treasure Hunt on Wheels. Leaving the Showgrounds, entrants followed driving instructions taking them along both major and minor roads through to Kenilworth, answering a fun questionnaire about local landmarks along the way.

There was time for a quick coffee at Kenilworth before returning for prizes such as the best dressed, best answered, best junior competitor and dirtiest car. Raffles were drawn during the barbecue lunch and bar which was kindly run by the Maleny Apex Club.

This event was organised to fundraise for local carpenter Dave Walker who has sadly been diagnosed with cancer, and was well attended by a many of his friends and supporters, with all proceeds going directly to Dave.

The event was organised by the Maleny Athletic and Cultural Association (MAACA), a group of locals who fundraise to help other locals doing it tough.

The Watson family from Maleny Motor Trimmers will be heading to Brisbane on Friday to participate in the MS Moonlight Walk, a fundraising event to support people living with MS and fund research to find a cure.

In 2014 Joy and Bryan’s 19-year-old daughter Megan (pictured) was diagnosed with MS, so this year Megan is leading the team aptly named the ‘The Ranga Runners’ of family and friends. Megan says together they hope to raise $2,000.00.

“Having MS is scary, it sucks, but I’m determined to keep living life to the fullest and I want to raise money and help fund ways to keep fighting this pesky disease,” she said.

Mum Joy said as her close friends and family, they’re walking with Megan to help support her on this lifelong journey.

Expert attention for cherished orchids

The orchids at Glasshouse Views are now thriving thanks to a visit from the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society.

Society members Jan Gresham along with Susan and Michael Keegan came together with residents Arthur Westwood and Pat Powel and volunteers Julie Palmer and Doug Wilson to inspect, study and review the plants.

Some plants at the aged care home were found to be in desperate need of repotting, while others were suffering from minor ailments.

Members of the society offered advice on remedies for the problems and suggested the orchid house be remodeled to allow for more light; it also requires maintenance and watering system checks.

Residents and staff at Glasshouse Views get great enjoyment out of these beautiful plants.

The members will be back on the first Monday of next month.

Students at Landsborough State School and Glass House Mountains State School will be directly benefiting from the recent fundraising efforts of the Beerwah Hotel Social Club. Last week the Social Club President Garry Cavanagh said they were really pleased to be able to make donations of $1,000.00 to both schools.

Kristy Walton, Principal of Landsborough School said the funds would contribute to Reading Resources.

Tracey Blake, a teacher at Glass House Mountains State School, and representative of the P & C said they would be putting the funds towards completing the project to air condition classrooms.

She was nominated by Mike Turner, who wrote ‘Coralie has been a longterm and excellent supporter of our local community. She is one of those people who dedicate a lot of time and energy to building community – and she has done it because she loves people and community.

Coralie has been President of the Beerwah Primary P&C and is currently the President of the Beerwah High P&C. She was the main organiser of the very successful ‘Big Night Out’ event held each year at the Beerwah Primary School which attracted thousands of people.

Coralie and her family are very involved in local sporting teams and clubs too. She has been a wonderful champion of the chaplaincy service of Beerwah High too, I find Coralie to be a very positive and encouraging person. Thanks Coralie for who you are and the way you care about others!'

School News Celebrating the French language

By Lee-anne Gordon Celebration of the French language is strong at Glasshouse Christian College.

This year the primary students came first on the Sunshine Coast in the Language Perfect Competition. Last year senior students went to France on a French study tour and over the recent holidays middle and senior students enjoyed a learning trip to Noumea, New Caledonia.

This was the first time Glasshouse Christian College organised a study group to Noumea, but if this trip is anything to go by, it probably won’t be the last.

Students spent the first hour of each day in their hotel doing French lessons then joined with their French buddies at College Champagnat.

The days were packed with language and cultural activities and firm friendships were formed between the GCC and the Noumea students.

GCC students presented videos they had made in French, showing off the scenic beauty of the Glass House Mountains and another one telling about their school. Then it was the turn of College Champagnat’s students as they made their video presentations in English.

It was not all work and students were able to take a couple of island trips where they enjoyed panoramic views, crystal clear water and incredible snorkelling.

The students returned home with a deeper knowledge and understanding of the culture and language of French New Caledonia and a much greater appreciation of what we have here.

Children were encouraged to investigate and get comfortable in their surroundings while new parents got informed and met current parents bringing their younger children to Peachester in behind their older siblings.

The vast green surrounds, welcoming vibe, true sense of community and variety of educational activities available at Peachester Primary were on showcase on the day.

Worm Walkabout

The KinderMarlee Kids would like to thank Bob the Worm Farmer in Landsborough for allowing us to visit him at his farm. The children developed lists and drawings around worm habitats, diet, lifestyles and their general worminess and decided to enlist an expert to check their theories!

Bob was very gracious and accommodating; showing our young scientists a hands-on and close up view of how worm farms work, with a follow up visit to the centre to set up our own worm farm. Thanks Bob, pop in anytime for scones and tea in the Kid’s Café!

This weekend will see plenty happening at the Mooloolah State School, kicking off on Friday night with an adults only 'Art Gallery opening night'.

Students make a splash

Whilst most kids are busy writing their own Christmas lists, students at Mooloolah School are writing lists and buying gifts for others!

Over the next three weeks students will be busy buying gifts and filling shoe boxes with gifts for children just like them but born into less fortunate circumstances. For some children it will be the first gift they have ever received and for many it will open up opportunities to go to school for the first time because they have simple school equipment that will allow them to attend.

Last year our amazing school filled 130 boxes of love and hope and this year we hope to continue our tradition of blessing even more children.

Each year several community members also help us by donating items for the boxes or by completing their own boxes and bringing them to the school office where they will be gratefully received.

The RI team who coordinate the school’s involvement, know that not only do the boxes bless others, but they also teach the giver to appreciate what they have and encourage a more compassionate attitude towards others.

Acts 20:35 says ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ and this school project really demonstrates that truth.

Contributed by Michelle Lenz This week swimming has begun for all students at Mooloolah State School from Prep to year 6. We would have to be one of the luckiest schools around to have a pool right at our doorstep, and swim for 20 weeks out of the school year. With the pool being right here this allows for more swimming sessions for the students and allows it to be available at a low cost.

The students are lucky to have the opportunity to learn important swimming skills, as well as allowing them to have fun. It’s great for the kids to enhance their skills and learn new ones.

It teaches them important survival skills for the water and gears them up for the Swimming Carnival held in December.

The students in all grades had a great time for their first swimming lesson of the season. The Preps and Year 1 students learnt about safe entry and exits from the pool, blowing bubbles and going under. The older students that were confident swam laps, looked at different strokes and diving, etc.

Swimming is a huge part of the school community and I am sure as the term goes on we will have students swimming like fish.

Re: Waste oil disposal

I read the article in GC&M News this week, ‘Oil a big no – no in bins’.

Two weeks ago, I had a cleanup around my home. Apart from a wheelie bin full of rubbish and heaps of steel, I also had 40 litres of waste oil, gathered from oil changes over the last 12 months. I could dump steel at no cost, paid for the extra household rubbish, but was only allowed to leave 20 litres of the 40 litres I had on the ute. I queried this and was advised that if I paid another $20.00, I could leave the extra 20 litres. So I recycled 20 litres, and had to take the left over 20 litres home. How dumb is this?

I could turn up an hour later and again recycle the other 20 litres! And then you wonder why people put oil in bins? A bit of common sense please.

There were a mother, father and three chickens, now there is only the father left, the mother and the chickens perished in the fire. That area had been their home for 20 years. Following the success of Wittafest, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is holding a Longest Lutheran Lunch on November 1 in their church grounds on Witta Road, Witta.

With what science has discovered about the neuroplasticity of the brain and the beneficial effects of meditation, mindfulness has gone mainstream.

For decades now, people with chronic pain or mental illness have benefited from these centuries-old traditions from the east. Mindfulness emphasises being aware of the present moment in a nonjudgemental way and stilling the mind using various techniques such as focusing on the breath.

However, there is another ancient teaching called Dzogchen arising from Tibet, which goes one step further. Dzogchen introduces us to the natural state of mind which is pure and perfect from the beginning.

Acupuncture

This is a state beyond thinking, beyond judgement and with the ability to liberate our strongest emotions into wisdom.

The benefits of being in this state of Dzogchen are endless. To begin to experience the relaxation, ease and non-dual awareness of this state, it is necessary to be introduced to the state of Dzogchen by a master who has directly realised this state.

Chögyal Namkhai Norbu is such a master and is able to introduce students to the nature of mind and then encourage them to deepen and develop this knowledge. Chögyal Namkhai Norbu says that Dzogchen is appropriate for our busy western lives as

it helps us live with more relaxation, presence in the moment and awareness.

Chögyal Namkhai Norbu will be holding a retreat at Namgyalgar in the Glass House Mountains from November 3 to 8. He will be giving teachings each day for two hours and there will also be yoga, contemplative dance and modern Tibetan dancing.

According to new research at the University of the Sunshine Coast, a sticky substance produced by native Australian bees has been identified as having a unique chemical profile that could hold the key to a medical breakthrough in how wounds are treated.

In a research world first, USC Biomedical Science PhD student Karina Hamilton has studied the cerumen produced by stingless Australian bees to explore possible medical benefits.

While there has been significant research done with European honey bees and associated health benefits over the years - previously there has never been any research carried out with Australian bees.

The PhD student has found that the cerumen from Australian stingless bees possessed up to 180 different chemical compounds, and was chemically different to the resin, or propolis, produced by the European honey bee. By painstakingly extracting the raw material, Ms Hamilton was able to isolate the four components that possessed woundhealing, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics.

To confirm that Australian stingless bees do produce cerumen with these beneficial properties is very exciting and the next stage for the project would be to look at human trials. With additional funding, research would look at whether the application on superficial wounds might hasten wound healing in patients.

One drought affected property U3A Beerwah Grafx had a photoshoot in August on a drought-affected sheep and cattle property located 80 kilometres west of Longreach.

Several members took part and brought back many photographs which evidenced the severity. Until one actually sees and experiences the desolation, the effects of the drought cannot be appreciated. The country folk are just surviving in the worst drought many have ever seen. Little rain has fallen over the past four years and, as a result, little or no grass has been able to grow. All animals are starving, including any stock that are being hand fed, just to get them strong enough to be put on a truck to the sale yards. All water still remaining is all but putrid and is only just able to keep some animals alive. Wildlife is suffering with many native animals dying where they lie. Only rain will break the drought and regular follow-up rain over several years might allow the country to recover over the next eight to 10 years. The people are trying to keep their spirits up and visits from caring city folk, together with charity donations of food, hay and normal daily domestic items recognise that the country people are not alone.

By Bev Dooley I have a lot to report this month. The biggest event is the hosting of 70 delegates from Information Centres around Queensland. Every year the meeting moves to a new location and this year it was the Sunshine Coast’s turn to host. What a great few days they had! Not only did the Sunshine Coast turn on the best weather, but I was privileged to escort one group through the Glass House Mountains, where they were treated to a look at our Information Centre, and a chat from Ivon Northage, one of our local experts. Australia Zoo offered a brief but exciting stop, including a visit to the dingo cubs. The second group had an equally good time with a visit to the Ginger Factory, a trip to Montville, and sight-seeing along the way offering more promotion for our wonderful area.

It is not often that we are able to showcase to such an influential group, a group that will go back to their home with the Sunshine Coast well and truly embedded in their mind, and pass on to travellers moving through Queensland just how wonderful our local area is. I felt very proud to be a part of it.

The same time as our conference was taking place, the cruise ship Pacific Pearl arrived in Mooloolaba. Now this may seem a bit distant to us here, but let me assure you the Glass House Mountains is one of the iconic destinations that these huge cruise ships offer one day trips to when they pull in – that means a boost for the local tourism, spread across the Sunshine Coast. The greeting of these visitors and the safe transfer to coaches and to the shopping areas is completed by a team of volunteers.

This adds to the great experience that our visitors have by providing a welcome smile, and local knowledge of the wider coast. These volunteers are drawn from all areas; some are students, and many are already long term members of Information Centres enjoying an extension to their role.

Master instrument maker showcases his work

Local luthier, Doug Eaton, works away quietly in his workshop at Curramore designing and fashioning stringed instruments as well as repairing and restoring people’s treasures. It has been a passion of his for over 40 years. “Each instrument is different,” says Doug. “You never know how it will sound until you string it up and play it.” This, after 200 hours working on each creation. He must be a patient man. Occasionally, Doug leaves his workshop to display the products of his toil. On Sunday, November 1, he will be at the Maleny Sunday Markets at the RSL with some of his instruments for people to try, and ask questions.

Growing roses in our climate can be a struggle, considering that they come from regions of the world which are much less humid.

One consistent problem all rose growers have to battle is black spot and from now on you need to start your preventative care program.

If you see circular black spots (up to 12mm diameter) with fringed margins, usually on the top surface of the leaves, you know you’ve got black spot on your roses.

When the problem gets bad, the black spots can join together Treat your black spot and you too can to create large, irregular black grow beautiful roses areas.

Black spot will cause roses to drop their leaves, meaning that your rose has to put its energy and nutrients into trying to grow more leaves rather than into making flowers.

Prevention is the best approach to fighting black spot, because once a rose has this disease, it's very difficult to eradicate.

Selecting black spot resistant varieties is a good start, and then plant them in a sunny position which receives plenty of morning sun. This is important so that the night's dew evaporates off the leaves quickly.

Give your roses plenty of space. Crowding them together doesn’t allow enough air movement around the leaves.

Roses like regular watering, but try to avoid spraying the leaves as this only promotes the black spot fungus to grow.

Water from the bottom, which can be a challenge if you use misting microirrigation or large over-head sprinklers.

If you haven’t done so yet, add new mulch around the base of the plants.

This will cover any black spot spores on the ground, preventing them from reinfecting your rose. It also helps to keep the roots cool, which is important for roses.

Clean up any fallen leaves which may be diseased, put them in a plastic bag and put them in the wheelie bin. Don’t compost them, as the black spot spores will survive the composting process and you could spread the disease with the compost.

Spraying your roses with lime sulfur in winter will help prevent the growth of the disease spores in early spring.

If it’s too late and the roses show black spot symptoms, most gardeners resort to a chemical control, such as a triforine spray (like Yates Triforine) or a combination fungus and insecticide (such as Yates Rose Shield).

An alternative to chemical spray is mixing half a bucket of water, three teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda and 20ml of fish emulsion. Spray it on every week in the early morning – using it in the heat of the day could burn tender new growth.

Willow bottlebrush

Melaleuca salicina This small tree flowers from September to November and can readily be identified by the lovely pink tips and cream / green bottlebrush flowers. Willow bottlebrush grows naturally along water courses in moist soil, often together with the common paperbark Melaleuca quinquenervia. It can be found across a wide range, from northern coastal Victoria to North Queensland. Both species of Melaleuca have papery bark once widely used to line wire hanging baskets for ferns and other plants.

While classified as a small tree, willow bottlebrush can grow to a height of 12 metres in a natural habitat, where it reaches to the light. As a home garden tree, this bottlebrush responds well to pruning, and can be kept manageable. Like most bottlebrush shrubs and trees, Melaleuca salicina is a great source of nectar and pollen for bees and other fauna.

The natural swamp habitat of ‘paperbark’ trees, has been widely destroyed by clearing for canal developments or damaged by weed invasion.

Margaret Niethe - Glasshouse Country Uniting Church I live by the river and many times I have sat contemplating life’s little and bigger problems as they present in my life…. Watching the river flow and the tides change, the river, constantly flowing and changing, is an image which I began to discover that I could use to transverse these challenging experiences. A river is powerful and watching it can produce many creative insights.

The characteristics of a river: its changing width, current and direction as well as features such as whirlpools, islands, rapids, waterfalls and forks, can represent changes and events in our own stories. My river and its surrounding landscape represent for me the environment that forms me and in many situations it helps me to map an individual personal journey or a community or organisational issue I am trying to work through.

It’s the quietness and also the fast flowing nature of parts of this river that assist me to clarify a problem, watching and listening to its soothing sounds helps me to focus; often just being able to sit quietly with eyes closed

The mixed triples final was played on Saturday, October 15 with Di Garland, Mark Ellul and Bill Tumbridge 26 defeating Gordon Dyer, Vic Muscat and Joy Reason 23.

The mixed fours spring carnival was played over the weekend with teams coming from all over the district.

Great efforts but no national gold this year Contributed by Norm Taylor A small team from San Taekwondo last week travelled to Adelaide to contest the National Titles. Aaron Lerch, Kasia Bartnikowska and Cameron Taylor all represented the club at the titles which brought together hundreds of fighters from every state in Australia.

Aaron Learch had a tough division and was unable to replicate last year’s national title winning performance. He was dominatingagainst his first opponent from New South Wales, taking the win on points gap in thesecond round. In the quarter finals against South Australia, a number of contentious decisions went against Aaron and he eventually lost by just two heartbreaking points.

Cameron Taylor finished with a bronze after losing the semi-final to South Australia in sudden death overtime in one of the most exciting competitions of the day.

Kasia had the best results from the club finishing with a silver medal. Kasia controlled the match and led the fight until the final two seconds when she and her opponent both scored head kicks within a second of each other. After a long video review Kasia unfortunately lost her points due to not being able to clearly see it on the video replay resulting in her losing the match by just
