Hi Everyone...

Each week I try to make sure the paper has a good blend or balance between the stories and photos on a range of topics, so that hopefully it reflects the broad cross-section of our communities’ interests.

However, I am not so confident that I have managed the idea of being balanced this week as our ratio has been tipped on its head and it’s all about events and the photos.

With three high school graduations happening last week as well as Remembrance Day and Armistice centenary events taking place across five of our townships on Sunday, November 11 – there is plenty to report on.

We have included three full pages of gorgeous photos showcasing the arrival of students at their glamorous graduation celebrations, hosted by Glasshouse Christian College and Beerwah and Maleny State High schools.

It is truly remarkable to see the transformation from their uniform wearing, daily lives to how stylishly they were presented at the big events. See our photos on pages 27 to 29 and if you would like to see more photos you can check out our Glasshouse Country & Maleny News Facebook page.

Local News Victory parade in Maleny

By Lea Parkes About 18 months before this year’s Remembrance Day, well known Maleny community member Chris Brooker decided it would be a great idea for the RSL to organise a re-enactment of the Maleny Victory Parade that took place on November 30, 1918.

Fortunately Chris was able to access a comprehensive newspaper report printed in the Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser on Friday, December 6, 1918 that provided great descriptions and detail of the original event to help him with the planning.

The article said the function of the procession was to “adequately display the joy and pride of the people of Maleny at the great victory achieved

by Great Britain and her gallant Allies, a day of festivities and rejoicing”.

The original parade involved a couple of hundred people, which would have been quite a lot of Maleny’s population at the time. There were 17 families or individuals named in the report, including the Hankinson, Brooker, Rough, Warne, Bradley, Thomason and Tytherleigh families.

Chris was determined to make as many links to the Maleny residents and the jobs of people who participated in the original event, and started the search for descendants and family members.

While each element of the parade had its own interesting back story, Chris said the re-enactment was not necessarily historically accurate, but it definitely recreated the essence and feeling of those who were there on the day.

During the months leading up to the event, there was plenty of research required and a high level of attention to detail that was incorporated in the planning.

Relatives of many of the original families travelled from around Queensland and from other states to be able to participate on the day, including Chris’s daughter who travelled from Tathra, south of Bega in NSW. Chris calculated that 212 people and 22 community organisations participated in this year’s parade as well as 20 people who performed auxiliary tasks. While GC&M News would like to include every detail for this article, we are including just some of the highlights of the day.

There were a dozen returned servicemen in the 1918 parade who this year were represented by members of 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny troop wearing their World War I uniforms and carrying a replica of the honour flag, which was given to towns or districts in Australia that raised their allocated quota of funds to the Seventh War Loan.

Mrs Rough’s peace tableau was lovingly recreated by members of the Maleny Quilting Group and made into a banner, which was carried in the 2018 parade by two members of the Rough family.

In the original parade Master Ted Hankinson, aged 15 years, performed the role of John Bull who was the symbol of the English and Englishness. This year Ted’s son Bill took on the job on horseback with family members walking beside him.

When Chris contacted Maleny and Conondale schools to encourage the student’s interest he ended up with a combined group of about 80 enthusiastic students as well as the stylishly attired Maleny State School principal and deputy principal.

The replica of the ‘Sydney’ was originally built around the car belonging to the publican Mr Cook and manned by him and his sons. This year the fellas from the Maleny Men Shed spent around 140 hours recreating the float, which was crewed and dressed by staff and cadets from TS Centaur, Maleny’s Naval Cadets.

Chris explained that one thing that had definitely changed over time was the amount of bureaucracy involved in organising

community events, with permits from the Sunshine Coast Council, police and Transport and Main Roads Department including 68 conditions that had to be met in managing the day.

Standing on the sidelines, the whole event seemed to go like clockwork. The excitement of those in the parade definitely indicated that they were not just in character but were feeling the love in the air and the feelings of the townspeople back in 1918.

Chris said the RSL would like to thank everyone who was involved in the event, acknowledging that it was the combination of all of the individual contributions that created such a wonderfully successful event.

He plans to compile a report of the 2018 event and lodge it with council’s heritage team.

Who knows, the Maleny locals of 2118 may just want to do it all again.

It’s always too early until it’s too late We spend a lot of time planning for the birth of a child or a wedding, but 75% of Australians have not had end-of-life discussions with their doctors, family and friends.

Advance care planning is the process of planning future health care for a time when a person may not be able to communicate their decisions. It promotes care planning that is consistent with a person’s goals, values, beliefs and preferences.

Wendy Pearse, end-of-life care project officer at Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, said an advance health directive (AHD), statement of choices and enduring power of attorney are forms to lead people through that communication.

“It is important to have the conversation with family and close friends, but it’s very helpful to have your wishes in writing,” she said.

Wendy is one of the speakers at a community event at the Maleny RSL Hall on Tuesday, November 27 from 10.30am.

The event is being organised by community member Jenny Fitzgibbon, who explained that her father was completely well until he suddenly became very ill and unable to think clearly. Sadly, they weren’t able to ask him what his wishes were, bar the very basics.

“I resolved to do my own AHD, then when going through it with my doctor she showed me that I had maybe misinterpreted question two,” Jenny said.

“It’s not as straightforward as I thought, however

“Many friends have said they want to do one, and some who have done it had valuable tips,” Jenny said.

The one-hour presentation will be followed by morning tea, and time for an informal chat and questions. A gold coin donation is suggested for those attending on the day.

Neonatal intensive care units

By Sonia Clark This month is Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness Month, which highlights the vital importance of neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and the incredible work of the medical staff who offer specialised care to babies born premature or very ill. The month also honours the families who have experienced the immensely challenging journey of having a baby admitted to NICU. GC&M News spoke to Tara Moodie, owner of local Beerwah business Total Microsystems, who shared some of her experiences following the premature birth of her twin boys in 2017.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your journey with the twins that led to NICU? I just suddenly went into labour at only 27 weeks and two days. I initially went to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where they administered drugs to try to stop the labour. Unfortunately, it only brought us enough time to be transported down to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) where I then delivered my twins that evening. Harrison was 1251g and Ethan was a tiny 886g.

Q: What advice would you share with others who may have friend or family members with a baby in NICU? Mainly do not visit or ask to visit unless it is specifically requested of you. The NICU is not a normal ward, and parents are often distraught while they are with their babies.

There is also a huge risk of germs. These babies are so incredibly fragile and what might be a sniffle or a sore throat for you, could put their life on the line. Do not touch or ask for or expect cuddles until Mum and Dad are ready and they offer. They will likely be very protective and incredibly cautious when it comes to the risk of germs - even months down the track. The best way you can help a family with a baby in the NICU is to offer to deliver home-cooked meals, babysit other children, do some washing or clean their house. Or give them fuel vouchers as the driving to and from hospital gets incredibly expensive. Q: Can you tell us what happened following the birth?

Both boys were taken straight into the NICU. Unfortunately, our little Harrison was too special for this earth and gained his angel wings on July 21, 2017.

Ethan spent considerable time in the NICU and was very fragile for a long time. Being born at only 886g, he was classed as a “micro preemie”. Aside from one cuddle on day eight with his brother before he passed away, Ethan’s first proper cuddle with me was not until day 38. Up until that point, we were only able to put our hands in the incubator and touch his little hand.

Q: What type of support was offered to your family?

It has been a very long, traumatic and stressful road for our family. In total it was 256 days before we were allowed to go home. I was offered a room at Ronald McDonald House next to the hospital and ended up living there for the full 8.5 months while my husband Daniel commuted back and forth from Beerwah each day. The accommodation was hugely beneficial as it meant I was able to get from my room to Ethan’s cot side in five minutes.

The staff were absolutely amazing. They were patient and kind. They became a second family to us as we spent so long with them.

The Beerwah and District RSL Sub-branch hosted a Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph in Turner Park on Sunday, November 11. Acting principal of Beerwah State School Tanya Hayden was the MC for the event, which also involved the school captains of both Beerwah primary and high schools.

The primary school also held its own remembrance activities on Friday, November 9 with school captains Macey Searle and Natalia Verkade reciting the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ and delivering a short speech about the meaning of Remembrance Day and how on November 11, 1918 - 100 years ago - the guns fell silent and it was the end of World War I. Staff and students also paused for a minute silence to remember those who have sacrificed so much for us all.

Mooloolah

Since 2016 Mooloolah has embraced the creation and use of the knitted poppy as a tribute to and reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served their country.

Mooloolah local Lyn Peck is behind the town’s poppy project, and she and a small group of talented women have been meeting twice a month at Andy’s Bar & Café (formerly Kenny’s Café) to knit and crochet together.

Lyn said others in the community had dropped off poppies to be included in the tributes to commemorate the centenary of Armistice Day. Each Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, these poppies have been placed in the garden beds around Andy’s Café.

For this Remembrance Day about 3,500 handcrafted poppies made a fitting tribute to honour and remember those who lost their lives during all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations since World War I. Lyn said the latest addition to the project, made specifically for the Armistice Day centenary, was a ‘We will remember them’ wall hanging of about 750 knitted and crochet poppies.

“There were photo buttons of most of the 16 men from the Mooloolah area who died during World War I and three men from World War II. The two men whose photos could not be found were remembered by a slouch hat and an RAAF emblem,” she said.

At this year’s Remembrance Day, the Last Post was played followed by a minute silence and former Mooloolah resident Ron Bell BEM recited the Ode.

Eileen and Richard Woodhouse “We intend to continue placing the poppies around the café on each Anzac and Remembrance Day to remember not only the 19 men from Mooloolah who did not return home but all servicemen and women, their families and their communities,” Lyn said.

Morag Gamble

Permaculture power to the people

By Sonia Clark Conondale permaculture teacher Morag Gamble is heading to Uganda and Kenya early next month to support practical community permaculture programs for women and children in need. With a focus on assisting local people to address their health and wellbeing through the establishment of sustainable food gardens, Morag will be travelling with her two eldest children Maia, 12, and Hugh, 10.

GC&M News caught up with Morag to find out more.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve?

We have a number of locally driven objectives we hope to provide practical assistance with. For example, we will be co-designing a sustainable food garden for the African Children’s Choir School (the Ubuntu Choir visited Maleny recently). We will also be mentoring young African permaculture teachers during a permaculture design course for teachers, farmers, activists and community workers (my kids are going to be students of this course) and working in a school garden demonstration centre that feeds more than 300 orphans daily. We also plan to take laptops and permaculture books to resource the permaculture education centre in Uganda. Ê Additionally, we will meeting with the Ê UgandanÊ Minister of Education to seek support Ê Ê for the development of a permaculture curriculum Ê and gardens for primary schools throughout the Ê Ê country.

Q: What assistance are you planning to offer when you travel to Kenya?

We will be working with women’s self-help groups to set up community-based gardens where they can grow their own food to take home and feed their families. We will be offering an introduction to permaculture program and supporting the provision of education and washable sanitary kits for vulnerable girls in western Kenyan villages.

Q: How are you funding this project?

Jack and the magic beans

A giant, a troll, a scarecrow, a giant chicken and a cow are all a part of the Maleny Players’ Christmas production ‘Jack and the magic beans’ by Vera Morris.

This well known English folktale, directed by Barry Harber, has been adapted and dramatised from the Benjamin Tabart version ‘The history of Jack Spriggins and the magic bean’.

The talented Junior Players will once again perform on stage and help to bring some festive cheer to families and all who are young at heart.

The opening night will be on Thursday, December 13 at 7pm at the Playhouse Maleny Showgrounds, which has recently been refurbished with new seating platforms, sound and lighting Tickets for the opening night will be adults $25 and includes a glass of wine and nibbles and children $10 (under five years free).

For performances on Saturday, December 15 at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday, December 16 at 2pm tickets are adults $20 and children $10 (under five years free). Community Groups Target supports Christmas appeal

Marriage benefits many

For 25 years UnitingCare and Target have partnered to brighten the lives of thousands of Australians through their annual Christmas appeal.

One in eight Australians live in poverty and many turn to UnitingCare to put food on the table, buy gifts for their children and provide temporary accommodation over Christmas.

This year UnitingCare and Target are again calling on shoppers to give generously by purchasing baubles for $2 or giving an unwrapped gift for families in need this Christmas.

Through the generosity of customers, organisers hope to raise $1.5 million to support the many in the community affected by domestic violence, people seeking emergency relief or children in foster care.

Shoppers can donate an unwrapped gift by dropping it off at the Christmas tree in the Target store at Beerwah Village.

A small gift will help assist thousands of families who struggle to celebrate Christmas, something many of us take for granted.

In 2017 the appeal helped support more than 45,000 Australian families and this year organisers hope to reach even more.

Director of Maleny Singers Margaret Taylor drew the three lucky tickets in the Rotary raffle held in conjunction with ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ performed at the Maleny Community Centre recently.

First prize was $400 worth of QPAC tickets and $200 accommodation, second prize $400 and third $200. Results are in today’s issue of this paper.

Chris Ross-Smith, the organiser of Maleny Rotary’s involvement with the production, said it was a very happy marriage and that the Singers and Rotarians worked well together and were delighted with the results. “We will be able to help our designated charities - Blackall Range Care and LifeFlight Australia - with significant donations,” he said.

The production was an artistic triumph as well, with members of the audience heard to remark how amazing it was that a production as challenging as a Mozart comic opera could be produced in a small town like Maleny, with all of the major roles sung and acted with professionalism and enthusiasm.

Of course, it would not happen without the talent and experience of its director and conductor, Margaret Taylor.

Coming from a professional career as a singer with English opera companies, Margaret and her husband, the late Derek Taylor, also a professional musician and director who had a stellar music career in England, retired to Maleny having spent some years developing the

If it were possible to single anyone out in the production, Tony Glazebrook’s Figaro was outstanding. He has an excellent voice, clear diction and he acts with conviction. Evalee Sharples gave her usual professional performance handling the lead role of Susanna with charm and verve. Viera Keogh as Cherubino and newcomer Sarah-Jane Abbott also impressed with their performances.

Unusual too was the fact that the opera attracted a 22-person orchestra of a very high standard, led by Chrissy Davis. It is understood that many members of the orchestra were prepared to come from far afield to rehearse and take part in this production.

You Said It Local speed limits

An update for readers regarding the speed limits on Gympie Street North and Tytherleigh Avenue at Landsborough. The Sunshine Coast Council has contacted me to advise that the decision to reduce the speed limit between Maleny Road and Landsborough School to 50 km/h, while the current speed limits on Tytherleigh Avenue will remain at 60 km/h, was because the council uses the Australian Standard ‘Manual of uniform traffic control devices’.

Thanks to Cr Baberowski and the council officers for taking action, and to the residents that helped in the campaign.

Regrettably the council could not be convinced that that the speed on Tytherleigh Avenue also needs to be reduced.

Why oh why?

As a concerned citizen who often travels Roys Road for work and pleasure, I often find myself asking the question “why oh why does the intersection of the new council depot warrant a speed limit of 60 km/h?”

Not only does it seem excessive that it has a speed limit of 60 km/h at all but to have that speed limit 24/7 is ridiculous.

If we would like to draw comparisons with intersections similar in construction, I will take you for a short drive up Steve Irwin Way to the Australia Zoo intersection that has thousands of cars going in and going past every day and it has a speed limit of 80 km/h and so does every other intersection on the entire Steve Irwin Way. So could somebody please explain to me and other confused Roys Road travellers, why oh why?

After reading your article about the proposed dog kennel in Landsborough I was angry and confused.

The laws have been changed to stop ‘puppy farms’, so does a facility with 100 ‘birthing rooms’ constitute a puppy farm where dogs are forcibly bred to get desired breeds, making the owners huge profits. A facility that has 100 rooms - do the maths. If each of those rooms had a dog in it and each dog had between six and ten puppies, that’s up to 1,000 puppies to find homes for and, depending on the breed, can sell

for thousands of dollars. There appears to be no moral obligation for the dogs.

The RSPCA is inundated with perfectly good dogs (and cats) that, through no fault of their own, have fallen into circumstances beyond their control. So with this number of puppies how many of them will end up having to be rescued or, worse, euthanised because of abuse or neglect?

I would like to know why Sunshine Coast Council can give permits for normal sized residential houses allowing them to put up a 7m long x 6m wide x 3.6m high shed right on the fence line of adjoining houses, which then blocks out the view of the mountains and skyline.

Re: Dangerous corner

I would like to respond to Wanda Grabowski’s letter in last week’s GC&M News about the turning lanes that have been installed at the intersection of Poole Rd and Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains.

As a retired heavy vehicle driver and bus driver, I concur fully with her assessment of this design.

There is not enough space to have a left turn and a right turn lane at this location, and I for one would like to see council re-examine the stupidity of this lane marking.

I have often observed trucks and buses trying to turn left into Poole Road from Coonowrin Road, and in every case they need to occupy most if not all of the right turn lane to complete the manoeuvre.

When I drive out of Poole Road, I use the left turn lane, even though I’m turning right, so I don’t put myself in harm’s way and hinder heavy vehicles turning into the road.

I would urge the traffic engineers to spend some time observing the traffic movements at this intersection, and they just might learn

something about the space trucks and buses need to negotiate the intersection, because in this case they have it very wrong.

Quarry should be questioned

Hanson Quarry in the Glass House Mountains, just west of Old Gympie Road, has been operating here for more than 27 years. During that time much has changed including the local area, the people and community expectations.

I am aware that the agreement conditions for the operation of the quarry are probably reviewed from time to time. When this occurs, is there the opportunity for the community to be involved, as they should be?

I understand that a demand continues for the road base the quarry produces, however, there has to come a time when the operation of this particular quarry should be reconsidered.

Back in August 2006 the Glass House Mountains National Landscape was added to the Australian National Heritage List, recognising the significance of the Glass House Mountains themselves.

Today locals and visitors alike explore our region and the Indigenous recognition of the mountains and the area is being more and more recognised and understood.

Statistics reveal that the Glass House Mountains Visitor Centre receives more visitors (both local, Australian and overseas) than any of the other centres across the Sunshine Coast. These people are visiting because of the interest in our history, the culture and geology of the mountains.

It seems ironic that we have an ever increasing tourist population that is competing fiercely with the Hanson Quarry trucks along Coonowrin Road to reach our magnificent attractions.

The Glass House Mountains are made of igneous rock and the rock that is being blasted and mined at the quarry is igneous in origin.

I can’t help but think that a bit of the Glass House Mountains is disappearing down Coonowrin Road every day.

What is even worse is that this fact is now promoted on the sides of the quarry trucks that are decorated with beautiful murals depicting a lovely panoramic view of our Glass House Mountains.

I just shake my head in disbelief.

Say no to nuclear and coal

I thank Mr Ronald Day (GC&M News, November 14) for calling out Mark McArdle's article and highlighting the economic and environmental stupidity of nuclear energy in Australia.

Lazard's ‘Levelized Cost of Energy Analysis’ version 12.0, released a week or so ago, shows that nuclear energy can be up to four times more expensive compared to unsubsidised utility scale solar, and nearly three and a half times more expensive than unsubsidised onshore wind.

New unsubsidised onshore wind at $29/ megawatt hour (MWh) is also cheaper than new subsidised coal generated energy at $36/MWh. New coal generated energy is also about half the cost of nuclear energy.

Both would require huge taxpayer subsidies to reach production in about 5-10 years. In the case of nuclear, significant and lengthy changes to legislation would be required before even planning for nuclear energy could be contemplated.

The cost of wind has decreased from $135 to $42/MWh in nine years, and will continue to decline at about 5-10% a year. The cost of utility scale solar over the same period has also decreased from $359 to $43/MWh and continues to decrease by 10-12% a year.

Yet the naysayers bang on about “when the wind don't blow and the sun don't shine”, and point to the reliability of coal fired power stations. By 2025, 50% of all coal fired power stations will be over 40 years old.

In the six months to July 1, 2018, coal fired power stations failed 59 times. This summer the unreliability of coal will only get worse.

Each failure adds to the cost of electricity to the consumer.

The federal government appears to be convinced that spending taxpayer money on what essentially would become a stranded asset, whether nuclear or coal, is a ridiculous policy to pursue, given the economic imperatives of renewable energy.

Re: Nuclear energy

The November 14 edition of GC&M News contained a letter regarding nuclear energy.

A recent program on Channel 9 covered both the Fukushima and Chernobyl nuclear accidents. It would appear that there has been, and still is, a lot of concern regarding nuclear power and especially these two incidents.

The first part of the program dealt with Fukushima and I was surprised to find that, although it will take billions of dollars and several decades to clean up, all of the radiation was contained within the power plant structure.

When the presenter went into the town they discovered that radiation levels were no higher than any other town on the planet. They even ate vegetables growing there. Although over 200,000 people died from the tsunami no one has died from radiation.

The program then switched to Chernobyl, where a British doctor had been researching the effects. I was very surprised to learn that only 190 people had died as a direct result of radiation.

There seems to have been a lot of media hype which has helped to drive a mass fear of the nuclear power industry. I believe that people tend to equate nuclear power with nuclear weapons.

Several years ago there was another program on SBS where a British physicist explored the history of uranium and its uses. He interviewed an American physicist who was hopeful that in a few years they will develop a reactor that will use nuclear waste.

This seems like a win-win situation as we could rid the planet of tons of highly toxic material and provide cheap reliable energy at the same time.

I cannot believe that Australian aovernments have been so short sighted in banning the use of nuclear energy. Especially when they happily sell uranium to anyone else who wants it.

We are looking for people who would like to become part of a committee with the objective of lobbying the State Government and Transport and Main Roads regarding these important issues.

We believe we are all entitled to be told what is happening, what plan has been chosen for the overpass and what the impact will be on the town of both the rail upgrade and the overpass.

Information has been hard to find, with only a select few being invited by the government to meet with relevant people about these issues.

The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. On our doorstep construction and development is under way on the largest master planned community in the nation – Aura. Bob Malcolm has been in the finance industry for more than four decades but says this is his most exciting year yet.

Managing the acquisition of MCU by Queensland lender Firstmac is a big challenge but he thinks the pay-off for Maleny will be worth it.

Bob says that business for him has always been about more than profit, it has been about ensuring services for the community.

This philosophy was integral for Bob and the MCU Board in negotiating the terms of the transaction with Firstmac, which will fund a $2 million donation by MCU members to the Maleny Charitable Trust. It also drives his commitment to helping the not-for-profit sector as president of charity Link Vision, which provides accommodation and education for people with low or no vision.

He is also president of the Northern Suburbs Hockey Club in Brisbane, a position he accepted after years of coaching women’s hockey teams, starting with his own daughters.

Bob says the acquisition of MCU by Firstmac is uncharted territory for him but he is confident it is the right move for members and the community.

“I am proud to work for an institution like MCU that has given so much to Maleny,” Bob says.

“After the transfer I will still be CEO, we will still have the same friendly faces in the branch, and I believe we will be able to give even more to the community.”

Hinterland Kids Students thank our police officers

Contributed by Mike Turner Beerwah State School chaplain On Wednesday, November 7, Beerwah State School had a very special guest – Senior Constable Susan Lowndes. Many of our children already know Senior Constable Lowndes because she is our school’s Adopt-A-Cop. Eight students took part in a special morning tea, where they asked many questions such as: “What are your favourite and least favourite things about being a police officer?”. The students presented Senior Constable Lowndes with a huge card that they had made, as well as a box of chocolates. It was a really special morning and great to be able to thank one of our local police officers for the important work that they do.

Beerwah State School leaders had a great time participating in a night trek and preparing for the recent annual Khaki Day celebrations and fundraiser.

They were lucky to have Jagger and Hannah from the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors charity come out to talk about the great work done at Australia Zoo and, in particular, the Wildlife Warriors, the wildlife hospi-tal and Steve Irwin’s legacy regarding animal protection and conservation.

Students prepared their own barbeque dinner, created some banners to advertise Khaki Day and then went on a short night bushwalk around the school.

The following day, November 15, lots of students came to school dressed in khaki and happily donated to the Wildlife Warriors fund in honour of Steve Irwin and the great work he and his family have done for wildlife conservation.

Encouraging a love of literature The educators and children at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre have been on an exciting literacy adventure. Utilising principles outlined through what is commonly referred to as the 3a (Abecedarian Approach), children are encouraged to develop a broad love of literacy through meaningful, dynamic and playful interactions.

Founded on evidence-based teaching and learning strategies, the 3a program has been aligned with contemporary Australian early childhood policy, including the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the National Quality Standard (NQS). Centre coordinator Dee McCaan says that since incorporating the program into the centre all team members had witnessed excellent results, and she is highly supportive of the way 3a encourages a supportive and engaging literacy learning environment.

The program emphasises the role of young children as active learners and the value of meaningful and response-contingent feedback from educators. Language priority, learning games, conversational elements and enriched caregiving are the four key principles underpinning 3a.

Dee says that at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre they are mindful of incorporating principles of literacy with the tools of the current digital age. She says that they seek to provide an immersive environment to install a love for literacy in all forms.

“We seek to scaffold the opportunities across platforms of the digital era to prepare children's learning and development for school and beyond.

Presenting literacy activities in an inclusive literacy learning environment takes many forms through the use of our whiteboard, lightboard, easels, vertical perspectives as well as using the natural environment to stimulate learning,” Dee explains.

Studies have shown the importance of vertical perspective learning in literacy as it can increase attention, ability to recall and assists in preparing children for school. Dee says that careful thought is placed not just on the program they deliver, but how they deliver the program. Team members are consistently mindful of industry led studies to ensure the children experience the priority of achievement.

The broad program includes playful interactions, enriched care and stable relationships among children and educators. Rich language interactions are individualised, frequent and intentional throughout the day between educators and children.

Meaningful terms are actively utilised by educators regardless of the age group, with back and forth conversation, active listening and encouragement from educators that the children are heard as examples of some of the strategies used at the centre.

With recent visits from prep teachers from surrounding schools, engagement between teachers and the class has involved a tapestry of puppets, books and tools to prepare and foster the literacy journey of school readiness.

As part of their commitment to fostering the emotional capacity of the children, the centre has also recently adopted the ‘you can do it’ program to assist and encourage emotional resilience, selfregulation and confidence.

Holiday Motoring When life gives you lemons, make lemon laws

Last week the Queensland Government delivered greater rights to Queenslanders who are sold ‘lemon’ vehicles, including cars, motorhomes and caravans.

Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath said the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2018 would increase consumer protections for people sold new and old motor vehicles colloquially known as ‘lemons’ – vehicles with numerous defects that recur despite multiple repair attempts or where defects have caused a motor vehicle to be out of service for a prolonged period.

“We know the financial and emotional pain that is caused when things continually go wrong with a newly purchased vehicle,” Ms D’Ath said.

“The Bill increases QCAT’s current jurisdiction limit of $25,000 to $100,000 for matters involving motor vehicles with either a major fault or multiple minor faults.

“This legislation means if a consumer cannot obtain a suitable remedy in negotiation with the dealer or manufacturer under Australian consumer law, they have the option of seeking a remedy through QCAT or the courts.

“Furthermore, this Bill will also reinstate statutory warranties to older second-hand cars, meaning there will be a requirement for motor dealers to provide a warranty for cars more than 10 years old or that have clocked up more than 160,000km.

“Easier access to QCAT helps consumers avoid a long and expensive court case, often against the resources of large corporations,” Ms D’Ath said.

Keeping the kids entertained

One important part of a successful road trip is being prepared with some entertaining games for both the big and little kids while travelling.

Brownie has chosen a couple of his favourites as suggestions and, after seeing how well the Australians are going in the cricket at the moment, this might be a good way to take your mind off the real thing.

Car cricket This game is suitable for all ages but younger children may need help adding up.

Each person in the car takes a turn batting. To score, you add up the value of the vehicles passing in the opposite direction. Scores are: car = one run, car with a trailer = two runs, bus or truck = four runs (a boundary), semi-trailer = six runs. The batter continues to score until a red car passes, in which case they are out and the next batter takes the crease. The rules are very flexible and it’s lots of fun, especially when everyone gets involved looking ahead for red cars. If you want to use a different scoring method, you could try car = one run, ute = two, truck = three, caravan = four, bus = six and motorbike OUT! Wheel of fortune Distribute the numbers one to ten to the occupants of the car, and these numbers are then written in chalk on a tyre, at spaced intervals, before you head off.

Each time you stop, look to see whose number is nearest to the road surface. The person whose number it is wins a reward (like sitting in the front for a while or some tasty chocolate).

Health &Beauty Consider your breast health

Queensland women have about a one-in-eight chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It remains the most common cancer affecting women in Queensland and the second most common cause of cancer deaths.

With the BreastScreen van in Beerwah for the next month until mid December it is a good time to think about your breast health.

Kelly Hart, health promotion officer for BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast, said that one of the most important steps all women could take to keep on top of their breast health was to have a regular two-yearly screen.

“Breast cancer screening remains the most effective way to detect breast cancer.

Although it doesn’t stop breast cancer developing, finding it early does give women the best possible chance of successful treatment and wellbeing,” Ms Hart said.

Women from Beerwah and the surrounding areas are encouraged to take charge of their breast health and make an appointment at the BreastScreen Queensland mobile van, which is located at the Beerwah Library until December 18.

“Females aged 50-74 are strongly encouraged to participate in the BreastScreen program as the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. However, the service is free to all women aged 40 years and over,” Ms Hart said.

Maleny-based chamber choir Tapestry is presenting two Christmas concerts on Saturday, December 1.

Tapestry, a mixed acapella choir of 14-16 members conducted by Kim Kirkman, will be performing Christmas carols and other songs with a Christmas theme. Individual members will also present solo items.

The material includes old favourites like ‘Angels we have heard on high’ and ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’, classical (Veni Veni and Gaudete), Australian carol ‘The silver stars’, and a couple of light-hearted novelties likely to be new to most people.

The concerts will be performed at the Kenilworth Catholic Church, 21 Anne Street, at 11am and then at the Maleny Anglican Church, Walker Street, at 3pm. Tickets for each concert are $15 and are available at the door.

The award winning Caloundra Chorale will present its Christmas concert, conducted by the very accomplished Maleny local Kim Kirkman, next month.

Come and be imbued with the spirit of Christmas as you listen to traditional carols, some fun swing numbers and other beautifully moving songs telling the Christmas story. To top it off you can make some unique Christmas purchases from the Christmas market that will be set up before the performances.

The concerts will be performed on Friday, December 7 at 7pm, Saturday, December 8 at 2pm and Sunday, December 9 at 2pm at the CCTC Theatre, 3 Piringa Street, Wurtulla.

Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 concession, $18 a head for groups and $10 for children with supper/afternoon tea included.

They have been busy planting succulents and herbs, and preparing garden beds to plant next year’s crop. Lots of yummy food has also been prepared in the kitchen. The students get a buzz when they harvest from the garden and prepare in the kitchen.

They love sharing the food they make with the school’s administration and especially explaining what is on the menu.

Like to talk gardens

Would you like to walk, talk, enjoy the great outdoors and learn for free, all at the same time? Then why not become a garden guide?

With the Visitor Information Centre at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens now open most days, volunteer garden guides provide free walks once a week (and booked walks at other times by arrangement) and Friends of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens are keen to expand the program in 2019.

New volunteers become members of Friends before undertaking a free, practical course based on learning about the gardens, local species, storytelling and more, in collaboration with Sunshine Coast Council.

As a guide, you meet visitors from all parts of the planet as well as locals.

Many visitors just want to understand why it is such a magic, tranquil place.

Others want some information, and sometimes they have special interests, but all visitors share a common appreciation of our stories.

If you are a life-long learner and confident speaker with a bit of time to spare, all you really need is passion.

Sunshine Coast residents are encouraged to apply to become a guide in 2019, starting in February.

Bush food bounty

The bounty of this land is considerable and native food plants that are must haves for your backyard include: midyim (Austromyrtus dulcis), a great low growing shrub/groundcover with attractive weeping foliage and tasty white berries; lillypilly (Syzygium spp) are all edible (if you are hungry enough) but from our local ones the riberry (S luehmannii) is not only bountiful but tastes good raw and even better glacéd in a sugar syrup; Davidson plums (Davidsonia spp) are spectacular foliage specimens with large leaves and large beautiful looking plum-like fruit that are a tad sour, but nothing that a few spoons of sugar can’t fix; plum pine (Podocarpus elatus) also produce a juicy, succulent, plum-like fruit with a pleasant pine taste that are again fantastic for jams and syrups; and finger limes are a great local treat and now highly sought after the world over. Then there are the native mints, native celery, native parsnip, yam, scrambling lily, tamarinds, sour cherry, bunya pine and many, many more.

Peachester swimming carnival

Contributed by Ken Barker After a series of hot days and fast-growing lawns it appears that most were too exhausted to play on the first balmy spring day on Thursday, November 8. The only game resulted in Bev Sockhill and Nick Cram having a solid win over Helen Andrews and Frances Harper 12-5.

On Sunday, November 11 Ted Singleton and Donna Manning pegged out against Vince Carbery 26-6. It was a good game with only a few missed chances. Frances and Helen also played a game with Frances coming out ahead 11–2.

Donna got away to a good early start and established a considerable lead over Leigh Harvey in the division one section of the November tournament, so when time was called it looked as though it was to be an easy victory for Donna.

Then Leigh, in his final turn after the bell, showed his true colours. He set off constructing a break which included four peels. A peel is a shot where you peel another ball through its appropriate hoop using the ball that you are playing with.

It’s a risky manoeuvre and not recommended for a normal break, but with nothing to lose Leigh nearly managed to achieve it.

The photo shows Leigh rushing the red ball to two back so that he can use it to return his black ball to one back and peel it.

Note the balance and compactness of the player and the fact that he has kept his head down until well after the shot has been played. He had already made two of the required peels but this one eluded him – though only by a little. It was a good game and a good win for Donna.

Lessons for beginners are held on Saturdays at 8 am on the courts in the showgrounds.

Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester State School students enjoyed a combination of hot swimming and cool games at the annual swimming carnival held at Beerwah Pool on Friday, November 9.

A small school means a small carnival, but huge ability and determination. The carnival saw some students beat their previous personal bests, with all students participating for house points. Students from the lower school competed in noodle and inflatable races, and their older friends swam more traditional races.

This year not even an extra four pre-service teachers could strengthen the teachers’ relay team, with the parents regaining victory in the teachers v parents v students relay race.

Congratulations to Coochin House who continued their reign over Stanley House with a convincing victory.

We recently held a very successful plum pudding bowls day. This event has proven popular with visiting bowlers from all around the coast for many years. Thanks to wonderful support from many people we are able to continue running this fundraising day that ultimately benefits all members and our community who use the club regularly. Pelican Waters were the big winners on the day with two wins and margins.

Congratulations to all who played. It was a great day. Thanks Kay Gesch for the planning and all our wonderful pudding makers.

Warm weather has made for some hotter competition for scroungers, with close games.

Good form by some of our new bowlers is very pleasing from a club perspective.

Wednesday night bowls has seen Ray Elemore settle in, getting everyone a game in the absence of some of our regular crew. If you would like to join in, be at the club by 6pm on a Wednesday night and we guarantee you some fun that will make you want to return. Our current leaders are the team of Ian, Min and Christine.

Thanks to Les and Linda Fawkes from Maleny Paint for their generous support in the purchase of a defibrillator for the club. Supporters like these help all clubs in our community and it is my hope that all members of all clubs remember the support that businesses provide our local clubs, when they are making purchases.

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

Queensland touch football

Contributed by Liz Little Beerburrum’s Eve O’Mara recently competed in the Queensland Touch Football State of Origin series held at Dolphin Stadium Redcliffe on November 9-10.

Eve was selected in the Queensland women’s 40s training squad from the Touch Football Australia National Touch League carnival held in March at Coffs Harbour.

In May, Eve attended a squad training weekend to be named in the final 14. Since then, there have been training camp weekends, Sunday training and individual training.

After six months of dedication and time away from family and friends, Eve has been victorious in her journey.

The team won the series two games to one to be crowned the women’s over 40s State of Origin champions.

Congratulations to Eve and the team on a fantastic achievement. Queenslander!

There were 12 teams that competed for prizes in the final jackpot of the year. Winning team with the lowest winning margin was Debbie Sawtell (V), Bill Tumbridge and Graham Nicholson. Runners up were Noelene Annakin, Trevor Dennis and John Annakin. The mystery prize went to Millie Freshwater, Eileen Pierce and Wendy Platt. Jackpot draw was 27 so no winners and the Christmas bonus draw of 16 closet card to jackpot was Graham Meyers, Lee Meyers and Jenny Morris.

Ladies Christmas breakup party is on Wednesday, December 12. There will be fun bowls with lots of prizes and raffles. If you just want to go along for lunch that is also fine.

Thursday, November 15: Social bowls, open pairs, winners of the day were Mac Townson and Rob Scullion with +14 in the first game. Runners up with lowest winning margin were Ernie Sherwood and Len Skerry with +1. Lucky draw went to Di Hume and Rae Farrell.

Friday, November 16: 6.30pm mixed club certified triples, semi-finals, Kerri Hazeltine, David Hayes and Paul Chirgwin defeated Steve

Joliffe, Chris Dougan and Jimmy Tatum 20-17.

A ripper of a game with scores tied 15 all on the 15th end. In the other game Brendan Freshwater, Chris Freshwater and Rodney Sharpe defeated Jack Chirgwin (J), Viv James and Bill James 1817. What a fightback, being down by 11 at one stage, Bill’s team picked up three in the second last end then one on the last end to equal scores at 17 all. In the extra end they went down by one.

What a great night. Final is this Friday 6.30pm.

Final of the mixed fours will be at 4pm Saturday after only five ends were played last Saturday due to the storm.

The final Saturday bowls for the year is 9am this week.

Sunday, December 2: Col Allen and I are organising a social bowls morning which will include breakfast. Open pairs with details at the club. Prize money plus beer will be up for grabs.

Cost will be $20 each and spots are filling up quickly.

Club bucket hats and caps can now be purchased from our office for $35 each. The caps are onesize-fits-all and bucket hats are S/M and L/XL. We understand that the prices are expensive but that is because we can only order small numbers.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley The club’s annual general meeting is this Saturday at 12noon in the shed.

Whistlers played their semi-final against Ballinger Breezers. It was a warm day with a nice breeze at Mooloolaba and we had a very good day.

All games were so close with deuces and could have gone either way. Lots of rallies and we all enjoyed the battle. We were just a bit short of games at the end, but were happy to finish this season with this kind of tennis. Score was 33-38 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Maree Hooley, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf.

22nd BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR DENTAL EXCEL Marley Dental will soon be celebrating its birthday. Now known as Dental Excel is approaching 22 years of servicing the Beerwah Community.

Back in January 1997, David Marley left the UK and purchased the dental practice from Dr Jeff Cox who returned to university for further study and these days is a specialist in Brisbane.

Since David took over the business it has been a truly family practice catering for patients of all ages providing good basic dentistry to ensure the best chance of staying free of pain and also with the prime

objective of ensuring that patients retain their natural teeth for life.

David has always believed in giving value for money, and has offered no interest payment plans for patients who need more expensive treatment who would otherwise not be able to afford it.

Dental Excel has moved with the times and now dental implants and restorations are available in-house and such things as fast adult orthodontic services are also available.

David said their aim is to provide a comprehensive service to the local community for many years to come.

Dr David Marley Dr David Marley has over 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry.

“I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued. Healthy

teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in supporting good general health,” says David.

David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all.

Dr Tiffany Chan Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients.

This experience enhanced her people skills in putting people at

ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist!

Tiffany has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has recently completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.

Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland.

He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those

annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer.

Finbarr also holds a postgraduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.

Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns.

She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to indigenous communities.

Shirly is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, esthetic dentistry and root canals.

Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.

Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his Dental Degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working in busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013.

Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Raj has particular passions for endodontic (root canal treatment) and orthodontic

(braces).

He is doing additional training in orthodontics, participating in a mini residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training.

Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
