Volunteer and make friends

Contributed by Natasha Odgers Want to meet new people and feel connected to your local community? The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is seeking volunteers to help in the day-to-day running of the centre, community events and initiatives. Computer skills are encouraged but not essential. Training in office skills is offered. The neighbourhood centre offers a range of community activities, free counselling, emergency relief for people struggling to pay a bill, information and referral to support services, hall hire, a computer mentor program, a range of volunteer opportunities and, most of all, a place to form friendships. If you have a few hours a week or even a fortnight spare, why not call in? The centre is open week-days 9am-12noon and is located in Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains (opposite Australia Post). Contact the centre on 5438 7000 or e-mail admin@ ghmnc.com or find them on Facebook. You will be made most welcome. Volunteers Leigh McCulloch, Carolyn Roberts, Margie West and Di Kluver

Landsborough gathers again

SMILE NOW, PAY LATER - TOOTHKIND NOW OFFERS AFTERPAY!

If live local musicians, food, coffee, games and conversation sound like a good way to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon, then head along to the next Landsborough Neighbourhood Gathering this Sunday, August 25 from 1–4pm. The first event held in April, hosted by Landsborough Love Where We Live members and the Landsborough Hall, was attended by about 90 locals including new and long-term residents from a range of age groups and backgrounds. Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive with multiple requests that it be repeated in the near future. Plans are under way to continue exploring opportunities for neighbours to connect, have fun and make new friendships. The Landsborough Neighbourhood Gathering also celebrates local musical talent. Vocalist and guitarist Che Burns, who is featured on Triple J Unearthed, will once again be playing an original set, as will cover band The Brollys. Joining them will be Stu and Nev from popular local band Copyryte. All Landsborough locals are invited so why not bring a neighbour, a plate of food to share and stroll over to the Landsborough Hall. If you have any questions or would like to be involved in these events, email landsborough.lovewherewelive@gmail.com.

On Friday volunteers in Glasshouse Country and Maleny will join those across Queensland who are turning towns yellow with their buckets of beautiful daffodils. If you are out and about you will see volunteers set up outside Fresh & Save Beerwah, Glass House Mountains IGA, and Maleny IGA with their bunches of daffodils and other merchandise. The daffodil is recognised internationally as the symbol of hope for people affected by cancer. The Cancer Council chose it as their emblem as it heralds the return of spring, pushing its way through the frozen earth after a long winter, representing new life, vitality and growth. To the Cancer Council and those affected by cancer the daffodil represents hope for a cancer-free future. The money raised from this Daffodil Day Appeal will help fund some of the brightest researchers in the country who are dedicated to discovering the next cancer breakthroughs. Research is vital to saving lives and finding less harsh cancer treatments, so why not show your support by either buying some daffodils or going online to www.daffodilday.com.au and making a donation?
