ALMOST twice as many people have lost their lives on Sunshine Coast roads this year compared to the same time in 2021.

With school holidays here it’s a good time to remind parents and children that school grounds are not playgrounds outside of school days. If you do not have specific permission to be on school grounds outside of school hours then you are trespassing.

There have been four unlawful use of motor vehicle (stealing cars) offences and another eight unlawful entry of vehicle (stealing from cars) offences. These offences can often be prevented by locking your car and securing your keys and ensuring that you don’t leave valuables in your vehicle.

Known in other countries as ‘sugar apples’, this sub-tropical fruit has a unique, sweet taste which is unlike any other fruit. Further north, typical custard apple seasons starts in February, however Yanalla Farms grow a specific variety which is the only variety to grow ‘out of season’.Theirsignature ‘Pink Blush’ is grown only on their farm, with harvest running from September through to December. The variety developed naturally from an existing tree planted by Robert’s late father prior to Karen and Robert taking over the family property. best utilise our growth in custard apples. Can you run us through a typical day?

During harvest we’re up early, handpicking fruit while it is still cool. Custard apples are particularly delicate, so we’re unable to mechanise this process - handpicking allows us to keep the integrity of the fruit. It’s important that the fruit remains cool, which is why we pick in the early hours of the day. They’re transported straight into the cool room where their temperature is reduced to six degrees overnight. They’re then packed the following day and dispatched at the same temperature. Whilst our townships provide facility for many of our requirements, we need efficient transport options to head to the greater Sunshine Coast for leisure, lifestyle and facilities that may not be available in the hinterland. Interconnectedness is essential for the continued sustainability of our smaller townships. Strategic rail and bus networks, which is efficient and effective connectivity, are essential for ongoing viability of our businesses and rural families. As mentioned in our submission to Council earlier this year regarding the upcoming renewal of the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, we absolutely have a need for a strategic transport network and for the CAMCOS project (formerly known as the Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study now being called the Direct Sunshine Coast Line) to become a reality, to provide our hinterland with the connectivity it needs.

We are blessed to be able to live in such an incredible place and we need to do what we can to protect our environment and lifestyle, whilst continuing to make it sustainable. Our beautiful, natural environment, particularly around our spectacular Glasshouse Mountains and surrounds, need to be preserved and maintained, ensuring our character and amenity are retained for all to enjoy. In order for our small hinterland communities to keep thriving, we need maintained connectivity, not only between the townships for walking and riding, but between the hinterland and our greater Sunshine Coast.

They include capacity improvements on the Bruce Highway in several locations and the delivery of all stages of the Mooloolah River Interchange.

A: We live in Glasshouse Country for numerous reasons; pleasant surroundings, convenient to both the coast and the hinterland, access to Brisbane by rail or vehicle, and good schools, amongst others. Any community requires a level of infrastructure to ensure the community can function. Government at all levels have been able to provide much of this infrastructure, however, the major shortcoming in the hinterland is public transport and this also impacts on the coast.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson:

We also cannot forget the need to improve our active transport networks, particularly the pathways to ensure accessibility for all in our community.

Key to the Sunshine Coast lifestyle, I would suggest is the open space, natural areas, and natural beauty of the country we call home. Protection, enhancement, and connectivity of remaining native ecosystems is essential, any new infrastructure expansion should take this into consideration during both planning and implementation. But perhaps before we look at building the new, we need to ensure adequate management of the existing transport network. Prolonged periods of road damage have been (and continue to be) endured by hinterland residents and visitors during and after storm events. Roads such as the Maleny –Kenilworth Road, have required upgrade for decades to be adequate for current use, but instead in places they are literally falling apart. In addition, simple low- cost solutions to reduce vehicular traffic and congestion in the hinterland, such as bicycle tracks and footpaths need to be planned and installed across the range to connect our communities with a healthier option

A: Quite simply, we need to plan sooner and smarter, we need to take the politics out of funding (across all three tiers of government), and we need to deliver the infrastructure we need before it is needed. To unpack that a bit, we need to identify where new housing options will go and we need to provide choice in those housing options (apartments, townhouses, detached dwellings and rural residential). Once we know that, we need to plan and deliver the roads, public transport, educational and health solutions needed to move people to and from work, school, medical appointments, and recreational activities. Some practical examples would be widening the Bruce Highway between Elimbah and Caloundra, delivering heavy rail from Beerwah to Maroochydore, delivering the Bruce Highway Western Alternative between Beerburrum and north Brisbane via the new Caboolture West development and a flexible, innovative, and nimble public transport system around the Hinterland.

EVERY now and again with this monthly article I like to include the offerings of some of the great musicians who live in our region, so I’ll begin a new series this month: ‘What Rings Their Bell’.

The corgis are quiet today.

Starting off with one of the most well-known spots on the Sunshine Coast, the Glass House Mountains offer a large variety of hiking trails to get up or around its six mountains. Mt Beerburrum offers one of the easiest trails, a short 15-minute hike following the Glasshouse Mountain Lookout Track.

Neighbouring Mary Cairncross is the beautiful Gardners Falls in Maleny, a waterfall with a big swimming hole at its base, including rope swings to make a splash. These falls are very popular with locals and tourists and can get quite busy, with people often bringing picnic lunches to spend the day.

Also amongst the shortest and easiest is the Wild Horse Mountain lookout trail, taking only 20 minutes. Mt Tibrogargan base walk, which takes 45 minutes, is also amongst the easiest and child-friendliest hikes, being slightly longer, along with Mt Ngungun

The world’s getting smaller but it can still seem like a big, lonely place when you start to question how much you really have in common with those around you. You can expect too much from relationships and when your overly romantic requirements are short-changed, disappointment may follow. Ask yourself: have I been too demanding or withdrawn? Sometimes we erect walls to protect ourselves but, in the process, shut others out. This is the week to demolish some of those not-so-necessary barriers.

Stay alert Scorpio – this week could be laced with deception. Someone you don’t know very well may try to establish a closer friendship to extract a favour. This is fine as long as you know what the game is and play by your own rules. It’s also important to set intentions for the next few months. Create a vision board.

PISCES

Now, here’s a better week as others seem more prepared to grant your requests. By now you’ve probably accumulated a very long wish list, so gently start hinting at what you want. They say that there’s a time and a place for everything. For you it’s now. There’s also focus on rebuilding friendships.

If you’ve taken to working on a hunch, your success rate now runs high. Planetary trends lend their weight to your powers of intuition this week, enabling some instinctive decision making when it really matters. As a bonus, financial gains look set to boost spending power. Sometimes, Aquarians do have all the fun!

FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20

Don’t assume you’re the sole trustee of all the right answers and don’t dismiss alternative views before they’re even heard. The planets have sudden shifts of mood and energy this week and so do you. When individuals are drawn to each other, the energies can occasionally be unstable. Sometimes it’s two steps forward and one step back. The right balance for love or friendship to blossom often takes patience. If you need to applaud another’s good fortune, please do. Your support matters, especially this week.

Cosmic forces allow you to reclaim your stride. Still, expect the occasional hurdle. Romantically, make your move after the 21st when there’s a better chance of success. The feasibility study estimated the cost of providing water, power and road access at over $1m, bringing the total estimate to $13.5 – $16m. In the ensuing years this will have inflated to an upper estimate of around $18m. This will rise. State subsidies for Council pools are triggered by population targets and Maleny has a way to go.

CEO of Jean Hailes for Women’s Health, Janet Michelmore AO, believes it’s important for women to acknowledge the challenges of the past two-and-a-bit years and to give themselves permission to look now to their own needs.

The survey, which was conducted in March-May and attracted more than 14,000 respondents, revealed that 30% of women said they were less fit, 28% said they had gained weight, and 20% said they had muscle and joint pain.

THE toll that COVID-19 has taken on Australian women’s health and fitness is laid bare in the 2022 Jean Hailes National Women’s Health Survey.

“For children who survive sepsis, many may have life-changing, longer-term effects such as behaviour and learning difficulties or limb amputations.”

“If a child has persistent, extreme or unusual symptoms, parents need to ask, ‘could it be sepsis?’

More than 18,000 Australians suffer from sepsis every year, 5000 of those affected will die, and of those who survive, half are left with a disability or impaired function. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Physician, A/Prof Paula Lister, said sepsis could start from something as simple as an infected cut, the common cold or a mosquito bite.

“It may lead to shock, multi-organ failure, and death, especially if not recognised early and treated promptly.

Some of the early symptoms of sepsis may include a combination of the following:

FOR the second year running, Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) has been recognised as among Australia’s best performing hospitals for hip fracture care.SCUH is in the running to win this year’s Australian and New Zealand Hip Fracture Registry (ANZHFR) Golden Hip Award, which rates a hospital’s performance against 16 indicators within the national Hip Fracture Care, Clinical Care Standard.

Conlan said that doing aqua aerobics several times a week is integral to her level of mobility and keeping the pain of her osteoarthritis under control.

Ms Hobson-Powell said that while women with muscle or joint pain often avoid exercise for fear of exacerbating it, the fact is that appropriately prescribed exercise interventions can help to manage and, in some cases, even treat persisting joint and muscle pain.

Those closures had significant effects on women’s health. Queenslander Penny

“Treatment of sepsis is time-critical; early recognition and treatment reduces sepsis mortality and morbidity, yet only 23 per cent of Australians know the signs.

Women assumed the greater shares of housework, childcare, home-learning, as well as managed their own work after the arrival of the pandemic.

and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), says women often struggle to put their own health first. The demands on their time during COVID-19 meant it was hard for them to fit movement into their daily lives.“Regardless of their health status and stage of life, every woman can gain significant benefits from being active. My

message to all Australian women is that to take care of others, you first need to care for yourself. It isn’t selfish to prioritise your health and take time to get the right advice when it comes to exercise.”

S – Slurred speech or confusion

“Sepsis occurs when the body is overwhelmed by an infection and the immune system damages its own tissues and organs,” Dr Lister said.

Dr Lister said parents should be alert to the signs of sepsis and seek urgent medical care if symptoms persist or worsen.

CHURCH & COMMUNITY

In the grand gesture of acknowledging her life, a life well lived and in service of others, her devotion to the Lordship of Jesus Christ shone through.

The event was held at the Maleny sub branch RSL hall on Wednesday night 31st August and we had 75 people attending this year. The night was filled with such an upbeat and cheerful ambience and our MC this year was our youngest and newest member to Maleny Rotary Club, Jared Ashcroft, who did a splendid job especially considering it was his first time doing it. We’ve already nominated him to do it again next year. Jared also happens to be a recipient of a Pride of Workmanship award back in 2004 at 18 years of age.

they’ve been nominated by their peers to receive one, it’s also the pleasure we have in walking around the town talking to the various businesses and organizations. There are about three of our members who walk around the various streets and wander down laneways to talk to as many of these as we possibly can. It generally takes us a few weeks to do this as by the time we stop and chat to various business people, the time has flown.

The wonderful service she gave to her people and the Commonwealth, flowed from a deeper commitment of faith. Which prompted this thought, When we live our lives under the Lords direction, it brings blessing to those we lead and live beside.

THIS year we had the largest number of Pride of Workmanship Award recipients since we started this program up again in 2020. We had 16 nominations including employees, volunteers and one business owner and of couse these all became recipients of the award as well. Anyone who is nominated for doing that bit extra, going that bit further in their work is automatically a recipient as this isn’t a competition to see who is the best. They all are doing their best work in the business or organization they’ll with.

This exciting find showed just how resilient some our native plants and animals are, when we provide them with the connectivity to move through the landscape and suitable habitat to live in. In the case of the Three-toed Snaketoothed Skink they a require deep layer of leaf litter to provide them with the

When establishing Forest Heart EcoNursery Maleny, we found Three-toed Snake-toothed Skink’s Coeranoscincus reticulatus. This amazing skink grows to about 50cm and is distinguished by its colouring (white and brown bands on the juveniles and varying shades of brown to grey on adults) and by its very small limbs which only have three toes on each foot. Counting three toes on these guys is tricky however, as they are so small that a magnifying lense, steady hand, patient skink and a good eye are crucial!

humidity, shade, protection and their food sources such as worms, grubs and small insects. The revegetation projects that have returned forest to the banks of the Obi Obi in Maleny have provided both habitat and connectivity for not only the Three-toed Snake-toothed Skink but many other fauna and flora.

To create a deep mulch quickly that is beneficial for not only our long-named lizard, but a whole range of ground dwelling fauna (and all the critters that feed on them) mulch your new plantings with a deep mulch between 100 -200mm thick. You can use bale mulch or chip mulch, just use plenty of it. Then make sure there are plenty of fast growing pioneers in your plantings such as Bleeding Heart Homalanthus populifolius, Native Mulberry Pipturus argenteus and Macaranga Macaranga tanarius. Density and diversity in your plantings will enable the development of a mulch layer to feed the soil and save critters such as the Three-toed Snake-toothed skink

DID you know that it’s not just in the wild places, but in the towns and even busy urban streets, that we can find rare and threatened plants and animals?

A SUCCESSFUL term 3 grading has seen nearly all of 37 Beerwah and Maleny San Training centre students level up to a new belt. Most students were aiming for white or yellow belts, with a handful going for red band two belts.

The ladies played in their Monthly Medal Stroke Competition with first place going to Karen Heading with 67 nett, runner-up went to Janice Emmett with 70 nett and third place going to Christine Lemon with 72 nett. Nearest to the Pin went to Narelle Thamm on the fourteenth hole and Debbie Hansen on the eighth hole. Karen Heading had the lowest number of putts.

We enjoyed our young visitors, showing children of various ages – from tiny tots to teenagers and some parents too – the ropes. Some of the older kids had a natural talent, and enjoyed making hoops and the more competitive aspects of the game. The real stars, though, were the tiny tots who had an absolute blast and found putting the ball through the hoops fascinating.

The referees pick the best and fairest players each season no matter where their teams placed, and the players selected were Emma Small from the Cowboys and Charlie Geeves from Be Farm“BothFit.players played consistently and with outstanding sportsmanship the entire season,” Young said.

In other club news, we played our usual Thursday afternoon Association Croquet matches, with two singles match-ups. Helen Uhlmann was grossly outclassed by Dianne Horsman, who graciously “gifted” Helen with a second try at several butchered hoop shots. Maybe it was too painful to watch the ball sticking in the hoops yet again?

This grading did not include black belt gradings, however San Training Owner Cameron Taylor said the students displayed a high level of effort which showed in the average grade total.

WEDNESDAY September 7: There was a Mixed Single Stroke Nett Competition played with first place going to Geoffrey Brown with 63 nett, runner-up went to Stephen Strelitz with 64 nett on a countback from Andrew Allen, also with 64 nett and third place went to Shaun Moore with 65 nett. Nearest to Pin went to Jim Brodie on the fifth hole and Simon Lower on the seventeenth hole.

WELL, we were certainly lucky on Friday September 9, a day when heavy rains and storms were forecast, and when the long awaited Maleny Spring Fair was to finally happen after being cancelled last year due to heavy rain. The bleak morning brewed heavy rain from dark grey couds, causing a great deal of disappointment, only to lift just in time for the fair to begin at the state school at 3.30pm. Why am I including this in this week’s report? Well, we had been invited to participate in the Village Green section at the fair and had set up some hoops – a “half half” lawn – on which children and adults alike could try playing mini golf croquet.

Friday September 2: The Whistlers played at Nambour against ZTA Novas. We were worried it would be a rainy day, but the weather held for us and we got to play. We enjoyed being on the court and playing and had a good win. Score was 8-0 sets, 48-8 games. Team was Paula Cudmore, Aki Lepper, Maree Hooley and thanks Amali Gibson for filling in.

San Training gradings success

Friday August 26: Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Hot Chillies. Weather was nice and perfect for tennis. We had a good day of tennis and catch up with all of our friends. With lots of rallies and running, we had a good win at the end. Score was 6-2 sets, 37-28 games. Team was Paula Cudmore, Maree Hooley, Donna Kuskopf and Cindy Harris.

“Not all passed but the majority did, we score the students out of 100, and the average score was 80 out of 100, then we had six students who received more than 90,” he “Threesaid.students graded for the red band two belt, which is two belts away from black belt, and our next black belt grading isn’t until December.”

Tiger Eyes coach, Sam Douglas, expressed how hard the team worked to secure the grand final win on the day.

Those guys and Peachester Nuts are unstoppable

“The game was hard fought as the girls had to fight for every goal they got,” he said.“The whole team worked well together

Glasshouse District Touch President Rob Young said the Peachester Nuts have also been a consistent side over the last few years in the social touch comps.

Students who received over 90 got a distinction award for their efforts, and those students included, Riley Ferguson, Lois Finley, Jayda Marshall, Neve Murdy, Jemimah Kluver and Jovie Green.

THOSE guys, formerly known as Get Stumped, have won their A Grade touch grand final 13-0 against the Showbags in their fourth undefeated season.

“In a fast paced match in which the Cowboys threw everything at the Nuts, their try line defence was fantastic.”
