ast week when we were heading to the events centre at Caloundra, on our way to take photos at the Beerwah High Formal, I was thinking about the photo we used on the front cover last year of a group of fella’s arriving on the back of the Landsborough Rural Fire truck.

I remember thinking that you would have to do something pretty quirky to out-do that, and it is difficult to plan a front cover before an event.

We got there really early to get as many photos as possible of the students all dressed up (see page 22 and 23 there are also more on our Facebook page) and it was just amazing.

You could feel the excitement growing as more and more

The big red bus made a very impressive entrance to Beerwah High’s Formal last week transporting 15 very glamorous passengers. See more photos page 22 and 23.

students arrived and there were plenty of great entrances – in some very stylish cars.

However when that open top big old red double decker bus came up the road, with 15 gorgeous girls, standing upstairs waving to the crowds – I was pretty sure they had cracked it!

I think it was the combination of the sheer size of the vehicle, and the collective sight of 15 glamorous young local ladies – it definitely impressed the crowd.

Looks like the bar has been raised for grand entrances – I am not sure how the graduates for 2014 will manage to out-do the bus, I will remember next year to look up in case some students arrive in a hot air balloon!

Saturday, November 23 Adopt-a-Digger and Beerburrum Hall presents Beerburrum Soldier Settlement Community Day at the Beerburrum School of Arts from 9.30am. Morning tea will be supplied, please bring your own lunch and a gold coin donation would be appreciated.

Santa will be making his first visit to Glenview Gardens Country Resort on 17 Glenview Road. For a gold coin donation kids will be able to pay the big fella a visit from 5.30pm. (All donations go to Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue Service).

Big week for Year 12’s and their parents Last week was a huge week for parents of Year 12 students from Beerwah State High School and Glasshouse Country Christian College.

On Tuesday night Beerwah High held their formal in the Events Centre at the Caloundra RSL, with almost 500 students, guests and staff attending.

The evening had a 1920’s theme (inspired by The Great Gatsby), and the students made some very grand arrivals.

After enjoying the red carpet entrance students were treated to a three course meal and entertainment.

Connor Bosch, Jake Hutchinson, Phoeve Staler, Travis Bosch, Megan Rowley, Jess Haig, Naomi Wellstead, Mana Taripo, and Talbot Speechley

In keeping with tradition, the Annual Funny Awards were presented and the English classes performed the dance they have been working on for a few weeks.

Talbot Speechley was the valedictorian and presented a wonderful speech.

The students then danced until late in the evening before dispersing for the after party.

Corey Middleton A good night was definitely and Spencer Cittolin had by all.

The Year 12 students at the Glasshouse Country Christian College had a very big 24 hours following their Thursday night formal held at the Forest Sanctuary Reception Centre at Forest Glen and then finishing school the next day.

The first Year 12 graduating class was in 2009, making this the fourth year GCCC has had formals.

This is the first time the school has had two Year 12 classes making this their biggest graduating class ever with 48 students, with three graduating students who had been at the school since Prep.

Congratulations to all the graduants.

Cassi off to Tamworth in the new year Many locals would be aware of Cassi Hilbers, one of Beerwah’s talented locals.

Beerwah At 12 she has recently been accepted into the CMAA Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth in January.

This is an amazing opportunity as Cassi will be one of the youngest performers to be studying for a week with 21 other children under the age of 17. They will all be mentored by some of Australia’s top country music artists.

Cassi has also been asked to sing at a few events at the Tamworth Country Music Festival which starts right after her graduation.

One of these offers includes a 30 minute set singing purely acoustic original songs. The event is called 'Nia Robertson presents Junior Storytellers' and she will be the youngest performer on the day.

Cassi’s proud Mum, Tracey said Cassi was fortunate to be the recipient of a RADF Sunshine Coast Grant which covers 60% of the course, however they need to fundraise the rest. They’re hoping that there is someone or a few people who may be able to assist them with raising the final $1500.00.

Cassi has been writing songs since the age of nine, and last year was the face of Pumpkin Patch, writing three songs for the company to use in their 2012/13 summer marketing campaign and she also appeared in their TV commercials.

She donates a lot of her song sales to charity and spends a lot of time singing at charity events around the coast.

Cassi also participates in the Glasshouse Muso Club each month, as well as many other events on the coast.

Cassi found out this week that three of her songs are in the top 30 of the ASA Australian Songwriting Competition. The outcome of this won’t be known until an awards night on December 4 in Sydney.

“At this stage we won’t be able to attend as we need to save for Tamworth, but even to make the top 30 out of thousands of entries is a huge achievement, when in one category she was up against adults and the other she was up against kids up to 17 years of age,” Tracey said.

Festival wrap up and future direction

By Lea Parkes The Glasshouse Country Festival Committee organised a wine and cheese night at the Beerwah Hotel last week - to thank all the event hosts and sponsors that participated in the recent festival.

They also sought feedback on how they felt the event went and what changes they might make if it was run again in the future.

With over 12 months of planning the committee behind the festival were really pleased at the number of community organisations that created events, along with the level of support from people attending. As well as the generous sponsorship provided by many local small and medium sized businesses.

The Peachester History committee were really happy with their wine and cheese evening held at the Peachester Cemetery that saw over 60 locals come along on a Sunday night at dusk and share in the stories of some of the people buried in the cemetery.

The Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre had hundreds of people come along to their Country Market Day which they said was just fantastic.

They were really pleased to create so much awareness about the centre and what they do.

They also thought they would probably change the timing of a future event by kicking off earlier and just making it a half day.

The Landsborough Museum said they were really thrilled with the number of people that came through the event on the day. However, they hadn’t anticipated just how popular the sausage sizzle would be and unfortunately they ran out of sausages!

And the huge celebrations at Mooloolah over the two weekends (which coincided with the Mooloolah 150 celebrations) brought massive crowds, and the Mooloolah Hall was absolutely packed to capacity during the photographic exhibition.

The Mooloolah Mob, Mooloolah’s walking group had over 100 people go along on their walk between Mooloolah and Landsborough through the old Dularcha Tunnel.

Like any event of this size, it takes many, many hours and plenty of volunteers to bring it all together and a number of the people involved had suffered from burn-out.

A decision has been made that for the event to continue, they really need to be able to access funding to be able to employ someone to do much of the background organisational work.

Or they need to recruit lots of extra volunteers so the workload can be evenly shared out next time.

Committee Chair, Bob McLean said it was great to see how the festival brought together so many individual groups to participate and it would be great if it meant stronger co-operative relationships could be developed for working together in the future.

Wild dog baiting changes

Local landholders will get easier access to 1080 baits in their fight against the growing problem of wild dogs.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said the new approach would give farmers more options to undertake baiting programs.

“Currently, only public sector employees accredited by Queensland Health can provide 1080 baits to rural landholders.

“To give producers more flexibility, I’m asking Queensland Dog Offensive Group (QDOG) to assist me in implementing a plan that will allow graziers and other private suppliers, with the appropriate certification, to inject 1080 into baits on property.

“This will deliver fast and efficient 1080 baiting services to landholders to control wild dogs.

“Providing graziers with even more flexibility will assist them reduce on-farm production losses and help us achieve our target of doubling agriculture production by 2040,” said Minister McVeigh.

Cent Sale raises dollars

Recently a monster ‘Cent Sale’ was held at the Landsborough Hall as part of the on-going fundraising needed to maintain the building into the future.

The event was a number of months in the making and long-time Landsborough locals Debbie and Casey McIntyre were the drivers behind the event. They were completely focused on making it a hugely successful night.

Debbie said the hall was absolutely packed, with 250 locals coming along which meant that some people couldn’t even get a seat at a table, fortunately they didn’t mind spilling out on to the side stairs.

Casey said before the doors opened people lined the street waiting to enter, everyone was in a great mood and clearly they had come along ready to win.

The Hall’s Management Committee really appreciate the efforts of Debbie and Casey and are really pleased with the final tally of over $7,000.00 being raised on the night.

Debbie and Casey would like to send a massive big thank you to everyone that came along on the night to support the event as well as all those that helped make the night run smoothly, and in particularly to the business that donated prizes for the night. (Check out the ad below to see just how many local businesses supported the event)!

“This fundraiser was a really great example of the Landsborough community organising itself to help fund a big repair project to this community owned Hall. I would like to congratulate the event organisers (Debbie and Casey in particular) and the hall committee who put on a cracker of an event which filled the Hall with locals and visitors,” said Cr Baberowski.

Hooley Dooley – have you met Bev?

The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre has a new face – Bev Dooley.

It’s been full speed ahead since she started as the new Ambassador Coordinator two weeks ago.

Bev hails from East London (West Ham to be precise) where she worked in the tourism industry, holding the position of Regional Manager with Travelodge in the UK. Then around 20 years ago, she saw the light and followed her Aussie beau to the Sunshine Coast where she set down roots and now calls home.

Leaving her job at the Big Pineapple to start her family, Bev eventually came back to the tourism field as a volunteer at the Mooloolaba Visitor Information Centre.

Bev said she ended up working with SCDL as a Tourism Consultant.

“This meant that for the past 18 months I’ve been working at the Glass House centre quite frequently,” she said.

Bev’s role is to look after the volunteers and to ensure that the centre is running smoothly and effectively.

Along with the Glass House complex, she is also responsible for the Montville and the two Caloundra visitor information centres.

Bev said that – although she’s only just started – she has plans to grow and develop the existing volunteer program.

“This means I would like to invite any interested locals who would enjoy spending a few hours at a time volunteering as an Ambassador at the centre, to come down and say ‘Hello’.

“You don’t need any special knowledge or skills – just an interest in learning new things and helping promote our area to visitors,” Bev said.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you can email Bev at bev.dooley@scdl.com.au or drop by the centre and leave your details. They especially need people who can help out on weekends – when the Centre is a hive of activity.

The McCarthy family of Glass House Mountains are desperate to find their three-year-old Labrador Retriever called Sammy (mum to seven puppies who are now nine-weeks-old). It is just over three weeks since she went missing from Wild Horse Mountain at Glass House Mountains in Beerburrum forestry.

On Sunday, October 27 the McCarthy family took Sammy and their other dog Narla for a walk at Wild Horse Mountain Lookout, to give her a short break from caring for her puppies.

While walking up the pathway to the lookout, the two dogs ran off the path into the scrub and moments later Narla popped out on the footpath a little further down, but Sammy did not.

Sammy's family searched and called for her for over six hours on the day and since then they have continued to search and use every idea possible to find her.

They have hundreds of Facebook supporters both locally and throughout south east Queensland who have been following their journey and encouraging them to continue their search leaving no stone unturned in the process.

At the time Sammy went missing she was wearing a black harness, she is micro chipped and flagged as missing, she was desexed recently so has a tattooed ear and shave spots under her neck and two front legs.

The family have no intention of giving up their search for Sammy. They cannot believe that

Story behind the face

If you have shopped at the Beerwah Health Food Shop on a Saturday morning over the past nine years you will probably have met Kaz Thomas Roby. Yes, she is the one with the friendly smile and the dreadlocks.

When I asked if she is pleased to have her days as a student over, she said she will miss the daily interaction with the other students of all ages. She is keen to keep the strong professional network she has established during this time, in particular her mentors that she has established as a student.

For Kaz, health and wellbeing is much more than a part-time job, it is a ‘extreme passion’ and once you get her talking about it, her enthusiasm is contagious.

These days Kaz is in her early 50’s, she is a mother of eight with three still living at home and a grandmother of three. And until just recently, she was also studying full-time in Brisbane completing her Bachelor in Health Science majoring in Acupuncture.

Kaz made the brave decision to become a fulltime mature age student at 45 when she decided to study to become a Homeopath, however after 18 months she decided Acupuncture was the path that she wanted to follow. She has spent the past five years studying for her degree.

During her study Kaz chose to really focus on Japanese Acupuncture which she describes as a gentler technique than the traditional Chinese Acupuncture. She said it uses much thinner needles and is less intrusive.

“The process is very gentle and encompasses the person as a being,” she said.

One of the highlights for Kaz while she was studying, was the opportunity to travel to Bali and volunteer in a birthing centre run by the Bumi - Sehat Internationl Foundation.

With her trademark smile Kaz said she also has a lot to thank the younger students for, as they taught her so much about technology. When she started her degree, she didn’t even know how to use a computer!

Kaz also plans to continue studying in the future (after a bit of a break) to complete her Masters degree and she has also been accepted into a government NEIS program which provides support and mentoring for those establishing small businesses.

They describe their approach as a marriage between traditional medicine and holistic approaches.

So with all her studies behind her and waiting for her registration to be finalised in December, Kaz is just bursting with enthusiasm to move onto the next phase of her journey, working one – on – one with clients to improve their health and well being.

One area in particular that she is keen to focus her work on is the area of women’s health, mums and bubs, pregnancy and fertility.

Initially Kaz will be setting up her business Soul - Qi, which is all about the ‘heart and soul’ and doing something you absolutely love, in a treatment room at the Beerwah Health Food Shop.

However she eventually would like to set up a shared ‘natural therapy centre’ where a number of clinicians offer a range of services with some additional space, possibly for providing tai chi or yoga.

Christmas Carols on again

We all know how much joy Christmas carols bring to the old and young alike. To get together with friends, family and loved ones and celebrate the spirit of Christmas under the stars; there's no other night quite like it.

For many years, the Glasshouse Community Carols have been bringing this wonderful night to the Glasshouse community. Organised by a number of churches in the region, it's a totally free event for all to enjoy.

To ensure this special celebration continues in 2013, Embracia in Glasshouse Country were proud to donate $1,000 towards the event this year.

Embracia in Glasshouse Country provide first-class retirement living and aged care to the Glasshouse Country area and is home to over 130 members of the local community who greatly enjoy local events like the Carols.

Residential Services Manager Christine Hawkes was delighted to present a cheque to the event organisers, Pastor Rod and Rhonda Jobe from the Church on the Rise Beerwah on Thursday, October 17 (pictured right).

This year the Carols will be held on Saturday, December 14, with the evening kicking off at 5.00pm.

There will be an abundance of pre-events for the little ones including an animal farm, jumping castle, face painting, Australia Zoo Croc Cruiser, story tent and entertainment from Peebo and Dagwood the Clowns. The carols start at 6.30pm with the choir and performers joined on-stage by the much-loved singing Christmas Tree.

The grand finale fireworks spectacular will light up the night sky at 8.00pm and is said to be the most impressive display in the Glasshouse Country!

With plenty of food, drinks, candles and glow sticks available to purchase, it’s guaranteed to be a magical night out for all.

Dorothy Forester's 90th birthday

1st Vice District Governor Visits Beerwah Lions Recently the Lions International 1st Vice District Governor Greg Rollason, presented at a well attended dinner meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club. Greg who is a lion of 13 years standing is a recipient of both the Melvin Jones and J.D. Richardson awards.

In his address, Greg reminded those gathered that it was important to follow whatever dream they had in life. He also pointed out that nothing stays the same in life, and change is always inevitable.

The Lions organisation he said was a global leader in humanitarian service, reaching out to those in need, particularly victims of disasters.

The Lions Emergency relief fund has already sent a substantial donation to Lions in the Philippines, thus ensuring that every dollar sent will actually be used for relief work.

Lions International 1st Vice District Governor Greg Rollason presented Beerwah Lion Errol James with his Chevron award for 25 years of service During the evening, Greg presented Beerwah Lion Errol James with his Chevron award for 25 years of service. Club president Rita Sanderson accepted a similar award on behalf of Lion Una Robinson in her absence.

Beerwah student wins top State prize Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated Beerwah State School student Tyson Baker for winning the Year 3 category of The Queensland Plan schools program competition.

Tyson beat other Year 3 students from across the State to be selected as the overall winner in the postcards competition, where primary school students were invited to draw and write their personal vision for Queensland on specially designed postcards.

Tyson’s entry outlined in 30 years he wanted Queensland to look like

a city mixed with the country.

Mr McArdle said the State Government received a lot of quality entries from students, but Tyson’s was well drawn and had an inclusive message.

“Tyson’s message is a particularly good one and I congratulate Tyson on his efforts,” Mr McArdle said.

“This is a great reflection on Tyson, his parents and also all the students of Beerwah State School.”

Tyson received an Apple iPad mini as his prize.

During term three 2013, principals and teachers were encouraged to foster discussions between students and the wider community about their hopes for the future of Queensland.

A garden party was held recently at Rita and John Cruickshank’s residence to celebrate Dorothy Forester’s 90th birthday. Thanks to all who helped on the day.

The Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Club inc. was formed in May 1984 and Dorothy Forester joined at the very first meeting and was nominated for the position of Provedore a position she accepted and held for 10 years.

After 10 years of sterling service to the kitchen, Dorothy accepted the position of Stall convener for the next 10 years. During this time, she donated considerable amounts of produce and goods for sale. Dorothy also held the position of raffle convener and then returned to kitchen duties, only recently giving up long stints serving tea and coffee. Dorothy was awarded Life Membership in early 2000.

Dorothy graciously accepted our offer for her to become Patron of our club.

Landsborough students remember

On Remembrance Day, Landsborough State School paused to offer respect for those who have given their lives in service for the nation.

Students, teachers and members of the community gathered for the moving ceremony, which was conducted by the school's student leaders.

The service included a photo story built around the prisoners of war soldiers who worked on the Thai-Burma Railway.

This year is designated as the 70th anniversary of the building of the Railway for the Japanese Army. During the service, everyone paused for a minute's silence to respect and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Other highlights from the ceremony included a recital of the First World War poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ followed by representatives from each class laying handmade wreaths.

Re: Quiet neighbour comments – October 30 edition

I have to wonder if you are a new resident to Barrs Road or one who has been around for a long time? Because those of us who have been here for some time, have learned to live with it. Their night excursions are *Not all the time* and yes the smell (when the wind is in the right direction) is strong to say the least *However* it is not constant.

Most of us that live here have adjusted in the same way we got used to the constant trains (that are going to double in number) and the dust trains raise.

The first time I became aware of what you are grumbling about I raised a few questions with a couple of the neighbours. The reply was ‘as long as the chook sheds raise the occasional pong, and the forklift works at night once in a while, this lovely area we live in will remain ‘Rural’ which is far better than the alternative’.

Just think about it, the developers will dive in and suddenly we will be in the middle of housing estates with all the pains that will cause! Not to mention that our rates will go up and many more inconveniences. It would be far more unpleasant than living beside a ‘chook place’.

If you want something to growl about, hey take a long look at the Rock Concert, which was not only ear shattering, but went on well past the time they claimed it would end. And if you think that will be the only one, don’t be mistaken, they now have the foot in the door and this will be just the beginning.

Re: Rock concert

At the time of the Rock Festival I was visiting my daughter in Glass House Mountains, so like many others my ear-drums were assailed.

I can well understand different people appreciating different types of music, art etc.

This has always been the case. What I can’t understand is why, for god’s sake why, do the rock musicians insist that everybody, but everybody, must listen to their type of music whether we like it or not. Their loud overpowering music drowns out any TV or radio program one might like to follow in one’s own home and reading a book becomes impossible.

The only option for peace and quiet is to leave ones home and abide somewhere else – if this is possible – while the rock musicians have their way. We are all entitled to our peace and quiet but this is not possible when these so called festivals are in progress. Why can’t they enjoy their music at a lower decibel level? Why do they inflict this noise onto the rest of us? Would they be happy to have the music of Chopin, Mozart or some other composer Booming into their ears hour after hour so that they could hear nothing else? I doubt it. This totally anti-social behaviour is beyond me and many others like me. Many of the people who frequent these events are not locals. What does it all come down to? Let me guess, oh yes, someone will make a lot of money!

Show some consideration

We live on Old Gympie Road in Glass House Mountains, and over the past few weeks have been awake at ridiculous hours of the morning due to a rooster in Coonowin Road.

I’m amazed at how people just don’t think when it comes to owning roosters.

I know there is an ambulance officer who lives on the same road the rooster is, he probably works night shift, what about others that work night shift and are trying to sleep whilst a rooster is crowing from 4.00am onwards.

Please if you own a rooster stick it in a cage where it cannot stretch its neck of a morning.

It’s fine to let it out later on in the day, but still nobody knows what hours people work in this area, and we all need our sleep.

I for one was woken last Saturday at 4.00am by this rooster, and other days as well, but Saturday is a weekend where most like to sleep in.

This is a ridiculous hour to be awake when people have to go to work, come home and cook, clean and do the regular daily basic things in life.

They feel so damn tired because a bird kept them awake, some people can sleep through a rooster crowing but loads cannot.

So please, all I ask is if you own a rooster do something about it crowing at early hours of the morning unless you have no neighbours, then fine, let that rooster do its thing.

We choose to own a dog, whether it be just as a companion, family member or just for protection. We have small children, are shift workers and are simply working class rate payers that Do Not want to be woken between 5.15am 6.15am in the morning!

The council have just completed an awesome walking path from Mooloolah to Ewen Maddock Dam, so why do you feel the need to come down to the end of Sugar Gum Drive, a cul- de- sac that has 19 dogs! And then return past the 19 Barking dogs to complete your leisurely walk? I am all for staying healthy and keeping fit But consideration of thy neighbour is also important.

I would like to take this opportunity to let my friends, neighbours, acquaintances, clients and customers from my house cleaning and from Cappriccios Italian Restaurant in Maleny, to know that I, along with my husband Lawrence and our son Adrian are back from the Philippines about three to four weeks ago.

My family and immediate relatives in the Philippines are likewise safe from the earthquake and most recently from the typhoon.

As we may know, Super typhoon Haiyan sent tsunami-like waves and merciless winds which tore through the eastern and central Philippines on Friday, November 8. It has so far killed more than 10,000 people in the most hit province of Leyte alone, and survivors are now growing increasingly desperate for aid to reach them. Chook sheds

In reply to Jenny Waldock who agrees with ‘Quiet neighbour’ about the appalling stench that emanates from the chook sheds at Barrs Road.

Have either of you ever considered the cause of the ‘stench’? I am sure that you and everyone else know that the cause is ‘battery hens’.

You only have to put up with the ‘stench’. What about the poor hens that have to live their life in cages; no freedom, no room to move or stretch, no night, only day. In the humidity and long hot summers, day after day only to then be disposed of in an inhumane way.

I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

How about putting your writing efforts into changing the conditions of these poor ‘battery hens’? While they are there, the smell will also always be there.

Not sure about reasoning

I am very grateful I never came across Peter Gawith’s ‘old teacher’ (GCNews 30/10). If illegal dumping is the ‘equal and opposite reaction’ of escalating recycling costs, by that logic excessive alcohol consumption (or drug taking or cheating or whatever) is simply the ‘equal and opposite reaction’ to escallating stress. Sounds like rationalising harmful actions and behaviour to me.

Re 'just a different name'

Peter, it is no use arguing with some people, however if you would like to detail how ‘supporting user pays’ would could work, I for one, would be very interested.

I reckon I pay far more than I should for services I never use.

Also I don’t believe that our rating system is any different than others - it is just dressed up so council can boast that they have kept the rates down, (don't mention the fees, levies etc).

Finally, people have been paid for being environmentally sound, i.e. solar panels, water tanks, insulation-etc.

Many homes now take up most of the block, few lawns, trees, and lots of concrete; I chose to buy a ½ acre property with lots of trees, bushes, lawns, fruit trees and plants. Instead of being paid to help the planet breathe and care for the wildlife.

I pay heavily for taking my green waste to the 'tip'. I knew it would be worth all the hard work involved, and I wouldn't normally complain, but people crying ‘user pays’ really gets me cranky.

It doesn't work, it cannot work, however please prove me wrong.

Tractor extraction gives Glenn satisfaction

Glenn Smiley, a driver for Clayton’s Towing at Beerwah, not only knows how to get vehicles out of sticky situations, but he also has an artistic eye for a nice photo.

Recently he had a call to pick up a wreck from a farm in Glass House Mountains.

When he dragged a vintage John Deere tractor out from underneath the collapsed farm shed covered in lantana and weeds, he couldn’t help but snap off a couple of pictures with our iconic Mt Tibrogargan in the background.

Re: Strange letters

In response to some very strange letters in GCNews of late regarding our wonderful Recycling Depot.

There are selfish and ignorant idiots in every community. They dump tyres on the side of the road, chuck glass stubbies out of car windows, burn leaves on their bush blocks, try to run cyclists off the road and play loud music at every opportunity. Their motto is: ‘It’s All About Me, Man’.

School News Grandparents Day Beerburrum State School

Students were asked to invite their grandparents along to share in an afternoon of fun activities.

Together students and grandparents visited the Library where they spent some time reading, using the iPads and laptops as well as enjoying a photo presentation of activities students have participated in during the year.

They then moved to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden for a tour and also enjoyed some fun craft activities together.

While the students attended the weekly Parade, grandparents had a tour of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen and enjoyed some light refreshments.

The students loved spending time with their grandparents and showing them around their school! It was fantastic to see so many grandparents attend this annual event!

A Big Thank-you to all the grandparents who were able to attend and we look forward to The Turner boys showing seeing you all next year!

I recently met with members from the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Association to discuss the history behind this great icon and its future. Firstly I have to say well done to the association for raising an impressive $7,000 at their recent cent auction to go towards helping the hall.

That is certainly no small feat. Did you know that next year will mark 90 years since the hall was officially opened? So what’s the history behind the hall? It was actually erected in memory of those who served in WWI. Records show the official opening took place on the May 4, 1924 and was attended by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan. A grand procession was also held from the railway station to the hall. Imagine that happening today. As you can appreciate, locals are keen to maintain this hall and its history continues to be a significant part of the Landsborough community. The Hall Committee is looking to do this by refurbishing the hall and is raising much-needed funds towards the cause. In the meantime the committee is looking for any old photos of the Landsborough Hall.

A sign of respect

Every year to commemorate Remembrance Day in my electorate I alternate between the Caloundra and Beerwah RSL’s. This year I was lucky enough to spend the morning with members of the Beerwah RSL Sub-Branch. It never fails to amaze me the display of mateship and how the community bands together and shows their respect at the various services held throughout the Coast. This is something we should all be proud of, and it’s important we continue to teach our younger generations what Remembrance Day means and the sacrifice diggers made during WWI. Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War, and at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month we all pause to observe one minute’s silence to stop, reflect and remember those who represented our country and unfortunately died or suffered in all wars and conflicts.

We will never forget. I would also like to congratulate the Beerwah-RSL Sub Branch for hosting their successful annual reunion at the weekend. It was an honour to attend. www.gcnews.com.au

Watch out for snails and slugs

Now we’ve had some rains, you may find you have an explosion in the population of slugs and snails in your gardens.

They can be devastating on newly planted seedlings and soft leaved herbs and vegetables.

If you find you have a snail or slug problem, you can start by cleaning up any weeds, rubbish and timber near the garden beds where they are hiding during the day.

Handpicking, will over time, reduce the number of snails but it is less effective for slugs. The best time is at night by torchlight after you have watered.

Barriers can be used to protect plants and young seedlings. These include crushed eggshells, lime, wood ash, and sawdust.

Homemade traps such as inverted grapefruit halves, pots or wooden boards can be placed in the garden and checked early each morning.

Baited traps – such as beer traps – work well. Place stale beer into a container with the rim 1-2cm above the ground. The snails and slugs are attracted in and drown.

If the problem is worse, you can use a commercial pelletised bait.

The safest are those based on iron (such as Multiguard Snail and Slug Killer), rather than metaldehyde or methiocarb, which can be poisonous to chickens and pets.

The Multiguard baits are effective on snails and slugs and breakdown into soil micro-nutrients after a week or so.

In the excitement of revegetating your ‘block’ the understorey species are often overlooked. This broad range of shade tolerant plants are generally succession planted which means that they are introduced into the plot when there is some vegetative cover to offer protection from the elements. Barbershop Chorus

You may not have heard from the Sunshine Statesmen Barbershop Chorus for a while but rest assured the chorus is still very much alive and well.

We are looking for more ‘Shower Singers’ to join us and experience the joy and self satisfaction, singing four part harmony the Barbershop style gives, along with the camaraderie in a chorus of 30 plus mates.

The swim club is for all children five years and above and commences at 5.00pm. The cost is free for all kids for the rest of this year. Swim Club is great a confidence building activity that will benefit racing technique. A sausage sizzle is put on for a gold coin donation.

‘Take a Break’ Playgroup

At the Glasshouse Country United Church we will be having a celebration for our break-up for 2013, on Wednesday, November 27 and we will be back after the Christmas Holidays. We will be having a special morning tea and lots of fun (as usual) with special gifts handed out to our children with extra special gifts for the children who are moving on to Prep or Kindy next year. This year has flown past, and we look forward to opening again after the break. No Christmas assistant needed

I felt like a little boy attending a new school. The new Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital opened two weeks ago, and I needed to obtain an identity card. There was also the necessity to go through the induction processes required of new staff. Spending one day a week as a surgical assistant (a great option for a retired GP) allows me to still have some time in medicine. It also gives me the opportunity to spend time with highly skilled medical and nursing staff who dedicate their working hours to repairing the health of those who need intervention. It may be the removal of part of the bowel for cancer of the colon. It could be a simple hernia repair, or the removal of a skin cancer on the nose. Every patient is important, respected, and treated with dignity. I see the delicate lifesaving and life-improving procedures each week. What is impressive is the commitment of the surgeons. Long hours, missing evening meals with family, being on call 24/7, putting their patients’ welfare first, and above all compassion. They often have to tackle surgical situations which stretch them to the limit.

But the patient’s welfare comes first.

This reminds me of the Christmas story.
