Maleny’s own bDifferent Dance Academy is currently preparing for their upcoming showtime on November 18 and 19 when they will present a fun fusion of the tales of Harry Potter and Swan Lake – welcome to ‘Hedwig’s House of Spells and Swans’.

Featuring over 80 young dancers, the show has many of the much-loved characters of both stories including Harry, Hedwig, Hagrid and the White Swans, to name a few.

Well, there have been two main topics of discussion in the GC&M News office last week.

As you start reading the pages you will see that one of them is clearly 'The Election', and the other conversation is very much about what the girls will be wearing to Melbourne Cup. It seems that the upcoming state election has certainly got the political parties' media machines working overtime with getting announcements through.

As you start reading you will see that we have allocated quite a lot of space to making sure that you, our readers, will know as much as possible about all of the local candidates and announcements.

As our circulation area includes both the Caloundra and Glass House electorates, we have included a profile on all nine of the candidates. If you are unsure which electorate you live in, go to the Electoral Commission website, (as a general guide, Beerwah and Landsborough are part of Caloundra, and all of the rest of the townships we cover are in Glass House).

Local News Glenview’s World Champion Caden Ward, a 15-year-old from Glenview who is a member of Beerwah Karate, recently became a World Champion, not once, not twice, but three times.

At the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) World Championships held in western Sydney last month, Caden won all three of his events.

The events that Caden competed in were Team Fighting (kumite / sparring), Individual Kata, and Sword Fighting – and he beat all of his opponents to become a World Champion in each of the formats.

For many years Caden’s karate training was done with his NSW club until his family made the move to the Sunshine Coast and he joined the Beerwah club.

His dedication to the sport still sees him travelling to Sydney and Coffs Harbour to train with his former instructors every month as well as training twice a week at Beerwah Karate.

Beerwah Karate Sensei Ann Hill said Caden has entered a lot of competitions this year throughout Australia and his dedication and hard work at training have paid off.

“Caden now has set a target for the Australian Karate Federation National Titles which are being held in Caloundra next August,” she said.

Tara Wilson, a parent of one of the club’s other students, said: “You can see that Caden really enjoys mentoring his fellow club members and his achievements are definitely very inspiring for them.”

Beerwah blaze on Sunday At 1pm last Sunday the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service advised that there was a slow moving vegetation fire burning near Fraser Road and Irwin Road, Beerwah (behind Australia Zoo).

By 1.45pm local residents were advised that the fire was traveling towards Foley Road, and they were being told to be ready to follow their bushfire survival plan – and

Caden takes the World Title

if they didn’t have a plan, or if there plan was to leave, then they should leave the area, as the situation could get worse quickly.

Multiple crews fought the fire and back-burning operations were conducted along Fraser Road during the afternoon and by 5.15pm the bushfire had been contained.

HQ Plantations crews will continue to monitor the bushfire until later in the week.

It is thought the fire was a result of an abandoned vehicle being set alight earlier in the day.

Maleny pool guaranteed

A Tim Nicholls-led LNP Government will invest $5 million towards ensuring the long overdue Maleny Indoor Aquatic Centre becomes a reality.

LNP Shadow Main Roads Minister and Glass House MP Andrew Powell said $1 million would be contributed towards the overall cost of the Maleny Indoor Aquatic Centre.

“This project has been talked about for nearly two decades and the LNP will work with council to ensure the Maleny community gets the sporting facilities they deserve,” Mr Powell said.

“Once completed, the community will have access to an indoor aquatic centre that can be used year

around and also for competitions.

“We will also invest $4 million towards Greg Williams with constructing a dedicated Andrew Powell at the ‘Drop and Go’ zone at Maleny Pool the Maleny State School.

“This vital infrastructure will complement the Indoor Aquatic Centre and ensure the safety of both students and swimmers, and motorists.

“These two projects will create local jobs, deliver better sporting facilities, improve safety and boost economic activity in our region.”

Permanent home for Maleny Rural Firies Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan and Labor candidate for Glass House Brent Hampstead announced last week that a re-elected Labor Government will construct a new shared facility for both the Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade and the existing auxiliary Fire and Rescue Service.

Mr Hampstead said that each year at Maleny Show time the rural brigade moves out so that the cattle pavilion can be prepared for the dairy cows.

“I know how hard these volunteers work for our community, so I am extremely pleased we have been able to come up with a solution which will serve them for many years ahead,” he said.

Funding for rail upgrade

Tree clearing strengthened

Mr Nicholls said this once in a generation project would be a game-changer for locals with an extra 150 train services and a faster, more reliable rail trip to and from work, and 1800 jobs during construction.

The Premier, with Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and Environment and Heritage Protection Minister Steven Miles, last week launched the Labor Party’s policy, ‘Saving Habitat, Protecting Wildlife and Restoring Land: Ending broadscale tree clearing in Queensland (again)’.

The Australian Labor Party has announced that they will end broadscale tree clearing if re-elected.

Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Tim Nicholls last week made an election promise that they would commit $300 million towards duplicating the railway from Beerburrum to Landsborough if elected into government.

Speaking at the Daisy Hill Conservation Park, the Premier said unsustainable land clearing was a threat to Queensland’s wildlife, the Great Barrier Reef and the climate.

“Our $300 million commitment means more frequent and reliable train services for Sunny Coast locals,” Mr Nicholls said.

LNP Glass House candidate Andrew Powell said that the commitment will deliver a duplicate line from Beerburrum to Landsborough and restart planning to fix the line to Nambour.

“This will ease congestion on the Bruce Highway between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane by providing 150 extra train services and a more reliable rail alternative.”

The LNP funding commitment is the first in what had become a ‘hot potato’ issue since the Bligh Government announced in 2008 that the duplication would be operational by 2012.

Current estimations have put the total project cost at over $600 million, with the $300 million shortfall having to come from the Federal Government’s $10 billion National Rail Program.

“A re-elected Palaszczuk Government will reintroduce effective legislation and establish a $500 million Land Restoration Fund. This fund will kick start a new land management industry which promises to contribute as much as $8 billion annually to the Queensland economy by 2030,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

The Land Restoration Fund, like the Federal Government’s Emissions Reduction Fund, rewards Queensland landholders and primary producers for reducing emissions.

“This policy is about sound environmental protection in the interest of all Queenslanders,’’ the Premier said.

The Premier said the government had a clear goal of protecting the environment while supporting sustainable agriculture.

With no timeframe commitment made, when asked when the duplication would commence, an LNP spokesperson said it would be “as soon as possible with discussions with the Turnbull Government already underway.

“One does not exclude the other,’’ Ms Palaszczuk said.

“All of our costings will be released before the election,” said the spokesperson.

“We’ve had overwhelming support for our petition, calling for strong, sensible tree clearing laws,” said Mr Hampstead.

When asked if the commitment will depend on factors such as asset ‘recycling’, other projects being scrapped or if it will still be honoured if the LNP loses the seat of Glass House, the spokesperson replied that it is not reliant on any other commitments. “An LNP Government will deliver the Sunshine Coast Rail Duplication.”

“More than 1,000 people have now signed the petition, which I delivered last week to Environment Minister Steven Miles.

Labor candidate for Glass House Brent Hampstead said that he would like to thank the people of Glass House for helping make this announcement happen.

“This announcement from the Palaszczuk Government is a testament to people power, and further evidence of Labor’s strong commitment to our environment."

If the Greens are elected next election they will introduce citizen juries and binding community votes to draft neighbourhood plans, make height limits and greenspace provisions non-negotiable and binding, and roll back provisions that allowed developers to choose their own assessors.

Beerwah The Beerwah and District RSL will hold a service at the Turner Park Cenotaph from 10.25am, with morning tea to follow at the Beerwah Hall, all veterans and families welcome. After the service there will be a reading from the diary of Mr John Radkins by his grandson, at the Beerwah Library where the diary is currently on display.

Glass House Mountains The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-branch will hold a service at the Cenotaph outside the Visitor Information Centre at Glass House Mountains.

Maleny The Maleny RSL Sub-branch will hold a service from 10.45am at the Cenotaph outside the RSL Building, 1 Bunya Street, Maleny.

Peachester The Peachester History Committee will host a service at the Peachester Cemetery at 10am for 10.15am start, and will finish with a flag ceremony at 11am. Following the service there will be a shared lunch at the Peachester Hall. The Peachester Cemetery is located on Cemetery Road, Peachester/Crohamhurst.

The Beerwah and District RSL were extremely disappointed that vandals damaged their Cenotaph last weekend, however minor repair works are now underway and this will not impact the Remembrance Day service planned for Saturday.

Are you fascinated by war history?

Library exhibitions remember those who have been lost In commemoration of Remembrance Day, residents can head to Sunshine Coast Council’s Beerwah and Maleny Libraries for exhibitions providing an insight into this significant day in our history.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said in commemoration of Remembrance Day, Beerwah Library will host an exhibition of memorabilia from conflicts and World Wars I and II. “The exhibition provides the opportunity to gain a rare insight into the shocking trials of life on a battlefront through the personal diary of Eric Harold Rapkins, with entries recorded on the landing at Gallipoli,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The community knows we all need to remain vigilant to the awful cost of conflict and war and, as time passes, these displays play an important role in supporting our commemoration ceremonies.”

Thanks to Eric’s grandson John Rapkins, visitors to Beerwah Library will gain this insight into his grandfather’s life during a tumultuous time.

Eric Harold Rapkins was born at Duranbah in NSW on August 26, 1891.

He left home at the age of 14 to find work and ended up working at the Tweed Sugar Mill. When WWI broke out, Eric, at the age of 23, was assigned to the AIF 15th Battalion and found himself heading to Gallipoli on New Year’s Eve in 1914.

“The exhibition includes Eric's war medals and hand-written diary entries of his experiences

and feelings which were kept in a small, fragile diary,” Cr Baberowski said.

Eric was officially discharged on August 26, 1915 and his diary note captures his thoughts on his 24th birthday.

However Eric re-enlisted as a recruiting sergeant travelling throughout South East Queensland and, following his discharge, due to ill health, took up a soldier settlement at Beerburrum.

He later became a lighthouse keeper at various Queensland locations before becoming the lighthouse keeper at Caloundra in 1930.

Eric Harold Rapkins died on July 26, 1947 and is fondly remembered by his family.

The local RSL chapter will sell poppies in Beerwah Library from 9am-11am this Friday, November 10, and from 9am-10.30am this Saturday, November 11.

Teresa’s a high achiever

Teresa Harrison from Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisors has been awarded the State’s High Achievement Award. Teresa was invited to attend the combined NSW/Queensland State Conference towards the end of last month and was presented with her award in front of 130 colleagues.

Theresa had been nominated as a Finalist Marketing Champion and Finalist Franchise of the Year which were both wonderful achievements Teresa receives her award in their own right, however she was pleasantly from Smartline Directors surprised to have won the high achievement Chris Acret and Jo Sirianni award, not even realising she had been nominated.

“I was really pleased to have the work of my team recognised in this way. This was a fantastic achievement for us – especially as we were up against branches from all over the state including all the city branches. I love what I do, to receive an award is just icing on the cake!” said Teresa.

The award recognises the hard work that Teresa and her team put in and is a testimony to the continuing importance of dedicated client service and their commitment to finding the right product for clients.

Following on from this year’s Sculpture on the Edge hosted by Spicers Tamarind Retreat at Maleny, the award for People’s Choice has been confirmed as Starey Hairry Coo by Elli Schlunke.

Life in all its joys, sorrows and all that’s between literally flies by, as we roll around the sun for another year.

Maleny was yet again in the national spotlight on October 28 as the weather crew from the Today Show broadcast the national weather from our very own hinterland jewel Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (MCSR).

Weather man Stevie Jacobs chatted with some of our MCSR volunteers (and the Discovery Centre), met Millie (Cow Cam, cow) from Maleny Dairies and also got to sample some of the great products from Maleny Cheese, Maleny Dairies, Maleny Food Co and Spicers Tamarind.

Thanks to Visit Sunshine Coast and Hinterland Tourism for funding and bringing The Today Show crew to the Hinterland, Sunshine Coast Council for providing such a great venue, and also to our Vice President Nicole Hilton for organising the logistics for the Maleny event.

As we head into storm season it’s great to have all the support, resources and information you can at your fingertips.

A great resource is Sunshine Coast Councils Disaster Hub www.disaster. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, a one stop shop for a range of information for business and residents when facing severe weather. Hopefully we have a gentle summer season, but it’s there if you need it.

Leanda Talks Setting goals to achieve lasting results Leanda Harmer Naturopath ND and Yoga Teacher Have you ever set a goal and even with all the effort you put in you don’t seem to get the results you want?

Have you ever wanted something so bad and then after getting it realise that there is no need for it?

Understanding the difference between needs and wants can give you greater understanding to why goals need different approaches to be reached.

Goals can mean the difference between success and failure. Realistic, well-planned goals keep you focused and motivated. They provide a plan for change as you transition to a healthier lifestyle.

But not all goals are helpful. Unrealistic and overly aggressive goals can undermine your efforts leaving you feeling flat and unsuccessful.

For example, a goal for weight loss can focus on outcomes of the process. An outcome goal is focussing on what you hope to achieve in the end and this might be to lose a certain amount of weight. While this goal may give you a target, it doesn't address how you will reach it.

A process goal is a necessary step to achieving a

desired outcome. For example, a process goal for weight loss might be eating the proper amounts of nutrients, adding exercise to your routine and drinking more water. Process goals may be particularly helpful for weight loss because you focus on changing behaviours and habits that are necessary for losing weight.

Both areas of goal setting are valid and focus and determination are both needed. When looking at health we realise that maybe a goal of wanting to lose weight might be more successful when understanding the need to address a pattern or conditioning that has stopped this goal from happening in the past.

It has usually taken many people years to develop their current health picture, therefore to actually address the underlying cause it can take time.

Setting goals is fantastic. Let’s put in place the right steps to achieve these goals successfully.

Growing up in a housing commission house in Woodridge, I learnt the core values that drive me today. I learnt that sometimes in life you’re in a position to help others, but when tough times come knocking there’s no shame in accepting a helping hand yourself.

I developed the belief that government should provide opportunity for us to learn and to prosper, but also be there to help the most vulnerable in our society.

Living in a household where my mum supported the family, working night shift in a nursing home and my step-father spent a good deal of time unemployed, I observed the great dignity of having a secure job.

These life lessons have guided me through my career and drive me today in my effort to become

your next member for Glass House.

It’s time the towns and communities west of the Bruce got a fair go. Local jobs, health, education, funding for our community groups, developing cost effective renewable energy and protecting our environment are the key priorities on my agenda.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has admirably led Queensland over the past 2 ½ years, creating jobs, lowering unemployment, restoring the frontline health and education services cut by the LNP, and taking real action to stem rising power prices. All this without selling our state’s assets.

Premier Palaszczuk has also kept her promises to Queenslanders. In fact, she has been successful in meeting 91.3% of her 553 election commitments, made prior to the 2015 election.

On the Sunshine Coast the Palaszczuk Labor Government has boosted the number of nurses, midwives and doctors, and employed more teachers and teacher aides in our schools. Labor has also made several local road improvements (including the Steve Irwin Way intersections at Reed Street and Bowen Road), built the $2 million Maleny police station and, most importantly, driven down unemployment.

When the LNP left office in January 2015 the Sunshine Coast unemployment rate was 7.3%. In September 2017 Labor had reduced that rate to 4.9%. That’s real improvement in people’s lives.

Our region deserves an MP who not only understands the issues but will actually get out there and fight for them.

With only 270 votes separating Labor and the LNP here in Glass House, there is a genuine choice for voters at this state election.

With your support, I’ll be the representative Glass House so desperately needs in state parliament.

Healthy Communities is about more than just the absence of disease; it’s about employment, about family, about education, environment, and access to affordable services. About the choices we make.

We need to move past antiquated concepts of ‘party loyalty’ or voting over single issues, and look harder at candidates’ suites of policies, and how they’ll affect families, workers, businesses, services, and the community, as a whole.

We need to look critically at what has, and hasn’t, been achieved in the past 10+ years. Our residents, our communities, deserve better.

Glass House needs the remaining sections of Steve Irwin Way widened to four lanes, two in each direction. This isn’t about campaigning to turn Steve Irwin Way into something it isn’t – SIW is already the alternate route for the Bruce Highway traffic overflow at times of congestion, accidents, weather events, long weekends, holidays and Coast events, locking many residents in and affecting both families and businesses alike. This is about finishing the work that has been partially done over the years. It’s about managing the current, and increasing, traffic.

There are already wide clearances along much of the road so the need for clearing is minimal, while the road and bridge works will provide much needed employment in the region. The work needs to be started before the increased traffic flow from Australia Zoo activity expansions, the

water park and residential developments begin to come into effect. A wildlife corridor should also be worked in to the plans.

The Beerwah, Glass House, Landsborough, Peachester area needs a centrally located community hub, ideally close to the Beerwah Library facilities to maximise community access and benefits. It should feature ground level facilities dedicated to a drop-in centre for connection, activities and skills development, market space, a community garden and pay it forward hub, with space for visiting support services. Upstairs would provide hire space for meetings/conferences, employment and training, bar and kiosk facilities, convertible theatre/cinema space, gallery space and seating areas.

Additionally, Glass House needs upgrades to the Maleny-Kenilworth Road, better telecommunications, mental health support services, liveable wage employment and improved public transport.

money to a foreign company. We live in a democracy and we will be listened to. I encourage everyone to get involved in this debate.

The CEO of Adani has said: “When we ramp up the Carmichael mine, everything will be autonomous from mine to port...”

Dirty donations from foreign investors, corporations and the gambling industry must end. There is a serious conflict of interest when politicians who represent the people take donations from these groups and extend favours to them as a result – be outraged.

I have a heritage of patriot-passion running through my veins. The second youngest of five children of a hard working and sporting rural living family, I travelled Australia as a young girl, giving me a true love for this nation.

I feel honoured to stand for the Australian people, noting that both of my Grandfathers served in WWII. I am also an active member of Woombye Light Horse 2nd Regiment.

I am a strong advocate against the sexualising of our children in the school through the deception of the Safe School Program. No program has the legal right to take away the parents’ authority and go against core and moral values.

My plan for Glass House is to return our farmers and their produce as number one in local trade, and to stop produce coming in from China full of mercury.

I plan to return our taxi industry and bring in a level playing field. I fully support Hinterland neighbourhood centres with extending crisis accommodation.

One Nation will be slashing 20% off electricity bills, establishing access to water across the Hinterland so no family has to wait weeks for water tank refills, and will work with the local council to abolish hidden taxes in rates.

My family and I moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1989. In that time there has been enormous change across the Coast, particularly in Caloundra and the Hinterland, including population increase, an increase in our ageing population and the enormous number of people using our roads and rail. Together this means a greater concentration of people on our bus, rail and road systems.

The Sunshine Coast population is set to explode and it is critical we deal with these issues.

That is why the LNP in Government will deliver the Rail Duplication between Beerburrum and Nambour. From Beerburrum to Landsborough will cost $600m and this raises the question of the Landsborough rail overpass going east to west.

Whilst the ALP Government failed to consult with the public, the LNP is committed to full consultation before any decision is made with the overpass.

I have made it clear on a number of occasions that Caloundra Road is the “Sunshine Coast's longest carpark” and last Friday, with Andrew Powell and Jarrod Bleijie, I announced a $15m upgrade to the Caloundra Road/Nicklin Way Roundabout directly linking Caloundra Road to Nicklin Way as you travel towards Caloundra.

This will alleviate congestion at the roundabout and, with other works, reduce traffic chaos. This will alleviate people sitting for long periods in their cars.

The cost of living is a critical question on the minds of many residents and under an LNP Government we will freeze registration on the family car for three years, saving up to $200, and move to deal with wholesale and network prices in our power bills, reducing bills by an average of $160 per year.

Importantly the LNP will put consumer representatives on the boards of power companies, that is people who live with the costs of soaring power prices, who are not part of the electricity network family, and they will have input into the costs and charges of power.

There is more work to do and the LNP will get it done.

I’m a local, having lived right here in Caloundra for the past 43 years. I went to school here. After serving five years in the Australian Army and then gaining my teaching qualifications, I obtained a position as a Custodial Officer at Woodford Correctional Centre.

We live in a great place . . .

teachers and teacher aides have been employed – as a result we have had the best ever NAPLAN results in Queensland schools. Major road upgrades have started, and more are planned.

The design of the Bruce Highway/Caloundra Road interchange has been recognised as a brilliant outcome and work is now underway.

More needs to be done. More full-time and skilled jobs must to be our priority. It’s why the Labor Government has introduced skilling and back to work programs; and introduced procurement policies to grow local businesses and local jobs. Compare this to the Newman/Nicholls era when over 2,000 jobs were cuts from TAFE colleges in Queensland, destroying apprenticeship opportunities.

Real progress on these issues depends on all levels of government planning, funding and

working together to deliver community priorities.

Too often they don’t. It’s time for a new approach to getting things done.

We need a deal that creates an agreement between communities and all levels of government to get major infrastructure done. It agrees on key projects and outcomes; what will be done, when, and how the work will be funded, detailing the financial contributions from each level of government – working together.

The agreement will create the certainty we need to plan and undertake the major infrastructure we need to create a better future with better local jobs, as our region grows.

More of the same is not the solution. That’s all the LNP is offering. They have learnt little from the debacle that was the previous State Government.

The LNP policies are unchanged, just repackaged.

The Sunshine Coast needs leadership and a strong voice.

It’s time to build a better community.

Born in Wagga Wagga, I moved to Caloundra in 1973 with my family then attended high school at Caloundra High, then on to uni. After qualifying as a teacher in HPE and Science, I taught all over Queensland including Blackwater, Mackay, Mossman and Logan City. With my partner Robyn, we also worked for two years in Azerbaijan and in England. From our early twenties, Robyn and I also began development projects including land, housing and childcare centres. From the 90s this became our full time occupation and still is.

Our last project was our own house (finally!) at Moffat Beach, built with Hempcrete and running off-grid in the burbs.

Caloundra, and the Sunshine Coast more generally, have endured somnambulant MLAs for decades. The grip the LNP have on these electorates has resulted in a massive underspend in health, education, infrastructure, transport and planning. Per capita, the region receives one of the lowest government spends in the state.

We need to make this a marginal seat. I need to convert some of the 30% of second preferences the Greens get from LNP voters into first preferences.

Caloundra's demographics are changing; our ability to manage the growth that is upon us is hampered by our safe seat status. Please, let's

make them listen. Let's consider the Great Barrier Reef, renewable energy and the other high-skill, high-value jobs that go with a well educated, healthy, agile modern city.

I was born in Tasmania in the late 1950s and I am the second eldest of four children. I grew up in the small hydro village of Tarraleah, located in the central highlands, but then later moved to the north west coast of Tasmania, and married Janine in March 2001.

The family and I actively participated in many sports and, as a young man, I took a particular interest in athletics and AFL. Now a Queenslander I am still a keen supporter and have been a member of the Brisbane Lions for the past eleven years. I competed at a high level in both sports until my late thirties and won a number of professional sprinting events, including at the Stawell Easter Carnival held in Victoria.

In my first job as an apprentice carpenter and joiner, I was awarded the Tasmanian Apprentice of the Year for 1977, and in my third year as an apprentice, I built my first family home. My work quickly evolved into project and contract management responsibilities with Matthews Constructions and Max Briggs Constructions in Tasmania, as well as Barclay Brothers in Darwin, Northern Territory in 1981-2.

Throughout my career, I have also held many senior positions within the not for profit sector including group employment companies which employed thousands of apprentices and trainees.

Most recently I have been owner/operator of my own retail/tourism outlet in Glenview. The responsibility of having three children at quite a

young age presented me with a new outlook on life and has taught me the value of hard work and the rewards that follow.

The strong family values, morals and respect that were such an important part of my upbringing have now been instilled in my own children and grandchildren. It is these values and beliefs that I have experienced which has driven me to ensure the same opportunities and fulfilling way of life that Australia has to offer is given to all. I began my journey into politics and representing the people in the 2016 Local Government election.

I have a strong interest in volunteering and working with church-based charitable organisations and community groups for over 15 years, which includes holding such positions as President of the Glasshouse Mountains Rotary Club. In my free time, I enjoy a leisurely ride on my Harley Davidson with Janine and socialising with close friends and family.

Before the State Election I would ask that you pop your phone or tablet down for a second! I won't be long, promise.

So, as another Queensland state election looms, we as Generation Y & Z of Glass House and Caloundra electorates must vote to elect local representatives for our region.

Here are three things you need to consider before doing so...

1. Go and vote, okay! Netflix and Candy Crush will still be available after, guaranteed! You get one day (and pre-polling) to vote for the government for the next 3-4 years. There is evidence to suggest low voter turnout in younger Australians in the past decade of elections. That sort of sucks. Gen Y and Z, we will be running the country soon, so get stuck in and have your say!

2. Glass House and Caloundra are now amongst the most marginal electorates/seats in the state.

They are practically on a knife's edge and could go either way. This means that our electorates are amongst a few that are critical to electing the next government to power.

3. Don't believe the hype. Sure, Stacey from down the road says she is voting LNP and the media suggest that Labor are "more likely" to win again. However... these are the opinions of others, not you. Make your own opinion count!

Finally... Google search each local candidate, research what they and/or their political party believe in, then vote for the local candidate you want to represent you and your community.

It's not much more difficult than that. Happy voting!

I would like to respond to Brad Boustead’s comments in GC&M News, October 25 edition.

The Premier and Labor have never let the truth get in the way of a good story or political opportunism, so I feel a sense of responsibility to set the record straight with some facts about the new trains.

Fact 1 - Australian company Downer pulled out of the running to build the new trains under the Bligh Labor Government (when Annastacia Palaszczuk was Transport Minister) leaving NO Australian company bidding for the contract. Not to be trusted

The Premier, having now lost the numbers required to govern, is forced to call this election early due to several bad choices of candidate at the last election.

The next term of government could allow her to mismanage and connive with unions for four years, unless of course, we are faced with the same bad choice of candidates and the same thing happens again.

Either way, I see no reason to look forward to the kind of management this premier has overseen in the last two years. I cannot trust Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and would not vote for Labor.

Labor tries to solve unemployment by employing more public servants, with top executives given very generous salaries and then extravagant bonuses, amounting to hugely inflated outlays.

This means the funding is not there for critical needs of child care, health and aged care, rail, road and other infrastructure.

Under Labor, previously reliable rail service has become unreliable to the extent that appointments depending on rail transport cannot be confidently kept.

The cost of electricity is a major worry to everyone, big and small business, health services – all sectors of the community.

Contrary to rectifying the problem, the Minister for Energy, Mark Bailey, with the Electrical Trades Union ETA, aims to pay apprentices more than senior police and teachers and make overtime payments that can make up 45% of a worker’s total pay. “It’s a government-sanctioned rort.” (Des Houghton CM Sat Oct 28).

The railway system, held to ransom through union dominated rosters, demands that a restricted number of train drivers is employed and paid exorbitant overtime rates. Labor has no credible strategy to bring the soaring government debt under control.

Last election, Annastacia Palaszczuk campaigned deceptively against state asset sales but hypocritically sold government land. Her word cannot be trusted.

You Said It Re: Land clearing laws/SLAS report

What to believe? Read the report yourself. My conclusions are of the total 395,000ha "cleared", 65% was non-remnant – meaning it was previously cleared.

The 138,000ha of remnant vegetation is roughly 3/4 of the area of Fraser Island, just to put it into perspective for you this is a tiny fraction of one percent. Only half the state has been cleared or thinned.

The vast majority was in areas with less than 40% foliage cover, i.e. light scrub or grasslands. It's not forested land as you would imagine.

The very small amounts of real forested land cleared would only be for infrastructure and subdivisions – not for grazing and cropping.

A fair chunk of the regrowth clearing is 'catch-up' from when graziers were banned from doing it during the period 2007-2011.

The assessment methodology and report isn't able to distinguish areas that land owners are legally required to maintain in a cleared condition, such as firebreaks, etc.

The study is via satellite imagery analysis; it would capture clearing a disused mango farm near Ross River to make way for a solar farm. Is that not a worthy use?

So yes, Labor is not being truthful, making a big deal out of next to nothing.

No candidate or party deserves our vote if they try this sort of deception and dishonesty.

Gentlemanly attitude

Good to see sitting member Andrew Powell hit back at the barrage of criticism he’s received, via letters to the editor.

Most of the criticism was centred on tree clearing.

Andrew’s already covered brush that was knocked down to feed starving stock during times of drought.

Locally anyone who thinks we’ve been overdoing land clearing should take a trip up one of the local mountains, or even fly over the region, you’ll be surprised at the high percentage of land covered by native forest.

Yet in all of this we still need to be practical, Australia’s population is increasing rapidly.

To feed these many people means growing even more food, or risk becoming dependent on overseas sources. We also need to be wary of overseas ownership taking over our agricultural resources.

In my dealings with Andrew he’s always been very approachable, helpful and conscientious. His gentlemanly attitude sets a high standard that other politicians (aspiring or not) would do well to follow.

Halloween litterbugs

Recently the banner belonging to The Sacred Heart Spiritual Church was taken off the Beerwah overpass fence. The banner was made by three dedicated church members. It took them over six hours to mark and paint it. If it is found and returned we would be most grateful. Halloween is a fun time of year when everyone gets to dress up and go trick or treating and usually come home with a belly ache or sugar high.

That's all well and good, but I've noticed again this year that common sense has gone out the door in regards to putting your rubbish in the bin. Even with providing bins this year to try and help, hardly anyone used them and instead proceeded to just throw lolly wrappers in my yard, the neighbours’ yards, and out on the street and gutters to then go on and pollute our water ways.

Please be more mindful and remind your kids about the dire consequences littering has on our environment.

Egged In Beerwah?

Since the Maleny Precinct was first mooted I have occasionally visited and walked around the area, watching it developing into a useful public facility adjacent to Maleny township. These days I am struck by the number of walkers using the pathways.

Taking the ratio of the number of walkers to the area of land used and comparing it to the ratio of the number of golfers to the area of land used, the walkers are way ahead in Precinct usage. Come on, golfers, polish your clubs and get out on the course.

On Tuesday night, October 31, a young Beerwah family came home late to find that their house was egged! Both the front door and the car in the drive were covered in eggs. Apart from causing distress to this family, especially the children, the car that was also egged belonged to the elderly gentleman that lived next door. Many of you have been our customers for the past 24 years and it is with some sadness that we say goodbye to the community. Garth has been in the electronics industry since starting as an apprentice radio technician working alongside his Dad in 1960, so as it can be imagined we have struggled to make the final decision to close up shop and we will miss the daily contact with our customers, but are very much looking forward to retirement and the travels that await us.

Once again we can reminisce about the success of this year’s Street Party. It was a great event, and it seemed that it attracted even more visitors than last time.

The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the team of Celebrate Glasshouse Country and their volunteer brigade for their fantastic efforts to organise this event. While such a necessary improvement was well received, the ecological values set to be lost within the 7km area still captured in the project footprint weren’t forgotten.

This is why the dedication of an additional 745ha to the Mooloolah River National Park coming out of this project will always be so momentous. The scale and impact of the works involved to deliver this $929.3m infrastructure project are hard to visualise when viewed two-dimensionally in project plans.

However, the feeling of being in this magnificent forest, now one of the largest National Parks in the region covering an area 1670ha, is very real.

Since parks are in the news, readers may be interested to know that our fledgling campaign to get a community recreational park on the 126 hectare Maleny Community Precinct on the only suitable land left has been warmly received. Here are some of the responses: “Absolutely yes, we do not have a suitable park in Maleny that is peaceful, beautiful, spacious and treed, yet safely away from busy roads and sports/ activities users. What an attraction and great addition to our beautiful town this would be!”

“A terrific initiative and not only for local people, as volunteers my wife and I have a lot of contact with day visitors, e.g. from Brisbane, and international tourists. Both are economically vital to Maleny.

Their overwhelming demand is for somewhere to enjoy a ‘nature’ experience, to walk and picnic. Mary Cairncross is badly overloaded. People don't come here to play polo and I've never been asked ‘Where is the golf course?’”

“I would love to see a large park for recreational use. I would love to take my family there, especially my granddaughter. Not a lot of places in Maleny for families. When we walk along the beautiful walkway, we always wonder why there isn't a park for the community.”

“The Maleny Visitor's Centre is overwhelmed with tourists and visitors coming to town asking for walking tracks and open parkland.”

“This is a great idea. Sadly young people have been grossly overlooked in terms of facilities on the Precinct. Hopefully this will provide some balance.”

The Lions Club of Mooloolah Valley was officially chartered on Saturday night, which means they became a club in their own right, following a number of years of being a branch club of the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club.

The Charter dinner was held at the Mooloolah State School Hall with more than 70 guests in attendance.

Mooloolah Valley Lions have worked hard in the community and gained 20-plus new members who are enthusiastic, community minded people who are keen to take the club into the future.

There was plenty of support from members of other local Lions Clubs on the night, including Maleny Blackall Range and the Beerwah Lions, as well as representatives from clubs from across their division.

The School Hall was a particularly fitting location for one of the club’s members inducted on the night, Mooloolah State School Principal Adam Poulus.

President Ron Flannigan said: "The club is always on the lookout for new projects to work on in the

New writers join group

Partnership continues

Mooloolah River Landcare was excited to receive acknowledgement for the renewal of their Environmental Levy partnership with Sunshine Coast Council.

This important three-year funding agreement supports the organisation to provide key services to the community including the nursery, biological control breeding facility, workshop program and water quality monitoring.

President Tim Odgers said it was wonderful to have Cr Baberowski come to visit the nursery to meet volunteers, view the facility and to discuss the role of Landcare in the community and the importance of the renewed partnership.

“We are very fortunate on the Sunshine Coast to have a system of levies on our rates to provide

services and benefits that may otherwise be outside the core business of council,” he said.

Mooloolah River Landcare’s nursery is brimming with wonderful native plants and it is open to the public Monday to Wednesday from 9am-4pm. It is located at the Holcim Quarry, opposite the proposed ACTVE water park, Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.

Keeping stock William Grigor’s Stock Return of 24 January 1901 shows he owned eight horses, 13 dairy cows, 40 other cattle and 13 pigs. Like many of the old documents in the Bankfoot House collection, this Stock Return tells us a little, but not a lot, about life at Bankfoot in 1901.

At that stage William had no working bullocks, which was unsurprising as he was approaching 70 years of age and horses were still the primary means of transport.

Mary Grigor had died seven months earlier, so William and his daughter Clementina were the only occupants of the house, which had been built in 1868 to service Cobb and Co coaches on their trips between Brisbane and Gympie.

A year later Clementina would marry bullocky William Smith Burgess, who moved into the house.

Settlers in the Glasshouse Mountains and Coochin Creek districts, as well as travellers along Gympie Road, no doubt purchased beef and pork, also milk, from the Grigors.

There was a butcher’s shed at Bankfoot and it is likely William killed and butchered his own beasts, even as an older man.

Maybe one of his grown sons living in the district helped him on killing days, and took some of the meat home for his own family. His third child, William Andrew Grigor, owned and managed a sawmill at Peachester.

The Commonwealth of Australia had been proclaimed on 1 January 1901, a few weeks before William filled in his 1901 Stock Return.

This would have raised many questions for farmers and primary producers. “What does the new Commonwealth mean for me? More taxation?” “Will the markets in other states be better or worse than they were when there were only colonies?”

The Boer War didn’t end until June 1902.

Farmers, including possibly William Grigor, may have supplied the government with provisions, ‘bully beef’ and horses for the war effort.

Dave, originally from South Africa, writes about science and autobiography.

“I enjoy being able to write, and meeting each fortnight really encourages my writing,” Dave said.

“It starts as your mistress, and then becomes your master. It takes over your whole being.”

Jackie is a retired school teacher and public servant who now resides in Palmwoods. She loves to write short story fiction, and likes the varied and diverse members.

Jackie said: “Our meetings are lots of fun and good humoured, and it encourages me to write again.”

If this sounds like it would suit you too, come along to the Beerwah Writers Group. Our members travel from Maleny, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Buderim, Brisbane, and Palmwoods!

We are an active group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing.

Established in 2006 by a group of like-minded people who wanted to share their experience with writing, the group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month in the Beerwah Library.

Members attending usually donate a gold coin to defray the cost of morning refreshments. New members are welcome and encouraged; a yearly subscription of $5 applies.

Tinnitus management – new strategies

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a physical condition, experienced as noises or ringing in the ears or head, when no such external noise is present.

We do know that it is real, not imagined, and can cause major suffering.

About 15% of the world’s population experiences tinnitus to some degree. For the majority it is merely a minor irritant while others can suffer lifelong stress, misery and torture.

About 70 to 90% of these have some hearing loss.

Until recently it was considered too difficult an issue to deal with and those afflicted were told nothing could be done about it. Up until then numerous strategies had been tried including medication, herbs, surgery, massage, chiropractic and all sorts of maskers and noise generators. However few of these worked to any degree while all had no long term benefits.

Some ten years ago WIDEX began to look for ways to find answers to the problem. With other world leaders in tinnitus research they developed a range of components which, when working together, had impressive results in dealing with tinnitus.

In 2012, Widex launched Widex Zen Therapy which has four therapeutic strategies, each of which has been proven effective for certain clients in the management of their tinnitus distress.

A way in which to measure outcomes was also developed which has now become the standard worldwide. The process involves a comprehensive intake questionnaire and personal interview, subjective scale measurement and audiometric testing.

Evidence from trials undertaken has shown the significant benefit this system delivers. The Widex Zen Therapy program is now available in Queensland.

Local hinterland Audiometrist David Hine has had more than thirty years experience with the hard of hearing and in that time has seen many cases of people suffering with tinnitus, unable to be helped in any way.

Glasshouse Country Orchid Society

Contributed by Jenny Kelly We had a big roll up to our September meeting, welcoming some new members along to share our passion for orchids. As always, members brought along their flowering plants and Judge's Choice was a beautiful species Cattleya intermedia var. alba, grown by Kurt and Jenny Ison.

This variety is endemic to South America, and not often seen around here. Kurt inherited his from his grandmother, who obtained it from her father. Kurt has had the plant for many years and, over this time, it has provided him with many divisions.

Our raffle winners on the night were Lyn Biddle, Helen Day, Faye Anderson, Theo Beenders and Sharon Hyde. All these members went home with a new plant, as did Michael and Susan Keegan who won the Tabled Plant raffle.

Our next meeting will be held this Thursday evening, November 9, at the RSL Hall in Glass House Mountains. We look forward to seeing you there for a 7.30pm start. Happy growing.

Peachester Horticultural Society

Contributed by Patricia Bradford At our recent meeting a big thank you went to the members who brought along potted colour to decorate the stage in the Peachester Hall for the Peachester Village Festival last month. Rob Morris has been trying out different combinations of potting mixes and was asked to print out some copies of his mixes. Members agreed to present a small donation to Curves for their fundraiser for Dementia Australia. Results of the competition bench for September: 1st Pam Innes 20 points, 2nd Trish Bradford 15 points.

The next meeting, our last for the year, is on Thursday November 16 at 9.30am in the garden of Trish and Gary Bradford. Please bring along a chair and meat for a barbeque lunch. This means clients will now be able to purchase items such as fresh produce in addition to our non-perishable food items and other assistance such as free bread, Telstra phone vouchers and Go-Cards.

Sanctuary Op Shop - we wish to sincerely thank them for their generous support of our Emergency Relief program. We also wish to thank Anglican Food Bank and the Seventh-day Adventist Church for their on-going donations to our food pantry. These donations allow us to provide non-perishable food items for those in need in our community. Without these donations, we would not be able to provide much needed assistance to our clients.

Tax Help is now finished, and a big thank you to Ross for his usual amazing service in volunteering for this.

Grants available to commemorate Armistice Day Last week we marked the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba. I was fortunate enough earlier this year to visit the site of the battle. It was a moving experience to stand on that ground and reflect on the sacrifice of the Australians who served there with such honour. Those courageous men and horses are commemorated here on the Coast, by the Maleny Troop of the 5th Light Horse, at the Beersheba Living Museum. They remind us that paying tribute to our Anzacs is an ongoing duty, and not an activity for only one day a year. In 2018, Australians will pause and reflect on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The Federal Government wants to support these commemorations, so there is $50,000 available in grant funding for community groups in Fisher. Grants from $3,000 to $50,000 are available and the program is open to a wide range of local groups including ex-service organisations, schools and museums, historical associations, and non-profit community groups. Eligible projects include any public commemoration of the Centenary of Armistice Day, new war memorials, new honour boards and rolls or their restoration, the preservation or display of relevant artefacts, the publication of wartime histories, and education programs. Interested organisations should contact my office on the details below to request an Expression of Interest form. I am accepting EOIs until November 21.

I recently attended the ‘Be Prepared’ workshops in Maleny for local businesses. The information sessions provided information and advice from experienced disaster managers about how to build your business capacity and resilience. Palmwoods Streetscape update

The recent fine weather has seen work progressing well on the Palmwoods Streetscape Project. Little Main Street will experience temporary closures to traffic for the Unitywater upgrade for the following time periods (weather permitting): Monday November 6 from 6am until Wednesday November 8 at 6pm, and Monday November 13 from 6am until Wednesday November 15 at 6pm. We are nearing completion of this project, and I look forward to celebrating its completion with the incredible local businesses who have worked with council to deliver this wonderful addition to the Hinterland community.

Celebrating Sustainable Cities recognition

The thunder of applause for the winner of the Banksia Awards 2017 Sustainable Cities category may not have been for Mary Cairncross or Beerwah Depot last week, but Sunshine Coast Council was the only local government, NGO or company with two finalists in the awards and that, in itself, was a massive achievement.

The list of accolades for the $4.7 million Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discovery Centre continues to grow, with the centre winning awards from Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia, Economic Development Australia, Master Builders Queensland and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. To be recognised as a finalist in the longest running, most-prestigious environmental awards in the world is quite an honour and continues to highlight the incredible efforts of those who have designed and built this wonderful facility.

Music, lights and glow products created a great atmosphere and the dance floor soon filled with children. Did you know that that up to 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years?

Studies have shown that in the first few years of life, approximately 700 new neural connections in the brain are formed every second, many of which are created as a result of a baby’s environment and experiences.

Shared activities at home and out and about in the early years are important in the development of language skills later on, and research highlights the significant role that parents play in helping their babies build a strong foundation for future learning.

Sharing stories, rhymes, singing, talking and playing with your child from birth builds a foundation for your child’s future development that can last a lifetime.

To support life-long learning capabilities and strong literacy foundations, the State Library of Queensland has established the ‘First 5 Forever’ program to directly support parents and primary caregivers as their child’s first and most important educators.

Sunshine Coast Libraries has been granted $1 million over four years by the Queensland Government to locally implement the First 5 Forever program.

As part of this, the Sunshine Coast Council initiated a Childhood Literacy Seat Project and work has begun locally on construction at Landsborough and Montville.

According to a council spokesperson, the story seats will be purpose-built and contain colourful storybook images.

“The seats are an engaging and positive way of encouraging parents and caregivers to play a

“They offer a great spot for storytelling, active play, singing and reading and the seats reinforce the message, ‘the first five years last a lifetime’.”

Work has begun on the facilities in Pioneer Park in Landsborough (the all abilities playground) and in Russell Family Park in Montville.

Divisional Councillors Rick Baberowski and Jenny McKay both announced the round concrete base has been poured in both parks and the seat will be delivered and fixed into position in December 2017.

After that, artwork will also be installed to wrap around the seat structure.

Ten seats will eventually be located in parks across the Sunshine Coast, with these being completed by January 2018.

“The campaign will start during the summer holidays and will include a map inviting families to head on a scavenger hunt to find all the seats, take a picture with the seats and share on social media using the hashtag #Storyseat,” the council spokesperson said.

Meet the Junior Kindy team Jess and Jenny are enthusiastic about their roles as educators in the Centre’s Junior Kindy room catering to children aged between two and three.

Jess is the Junior Kindy room group leader and Jenny is the room assistant and together they make an awesome team who have a lot of fun with the children.

Jess has been with Glass House Early Education Centre for the last four years and has her diploma in early childhood education. She brings a wealth of experience to her role as an early childhood educator and enjoys working in the supportive and nurturing environment.

In an industry that often has a high turnaround of staff, Jess clearly loves her job as she has been with Queensland Child Care Services for 12 years.

“I love coming to work! Every day is different here at the Centre and the children are just lovely. The children are so happy and always interested in learning and playing – they just brighten up your day!” says Jess.

As group leader, Jess works closely with the children and their families to start to introduce age appropriate structure and help establish routines to help build the children’s confidence and sense of growing independence. The children are encouraged to develop their knowledge base with activities such as cooking, reading time, learning about the life cycle of plants, recycling and sustainability.

“Jenny and I love working with the two and three year olds. This is a great age and they love to learn new things. It’s wonderful to watch them learning to interact well with each other as well as develop their social skills,” says Jess.

Jenny originally started at Glass House Early Education Centre in 2010 and taught for four years before taking time off to work for another provider and have her own child. She returned to work at the centre in 2016 and has enjoyed seeing many of the children she taught as toddlers now big-school-aged children who still remember her!

“It’s so lovely to come back and see so many familiar faces in both the staff members and the long term families who continue to be part of this amazing centre. Now my little boy goes here too and I just love the family like atmosphere that exists between staff, the parents and the children who attend the centre,” says Jenny.

Jenny is currently studying her diploma of early childhood education and care and enjoys assisting Jess in the Junior Kindy room.

“It’s such a nice age and even though they are still very young they are learning to be more independent and are just so interested in everything around them. It’s exciting to see their learning journey unfold – they love to learn!”

The rewards that come with working with young children are appreciated by all the staff at the centre, as well as the bond and friendship developed with the parents.

At the Glass House Early Education Centre a strong sense of support and cooperation exists between all the staff and this supportive ‘family like’ environment is one of the key reasons that Jenny the majority of staff members are long term. The Centre prides itself on the care and professionalism of its staff and its engagement with the children, their families and the wider community.

School News Peachester contributes to concert silver

Contributed by Dorothy Robb Peachester students are members of the Hinterland Combined Schools Concert (HCSC) Band that combines with students from Maleny, Kenilworth and Montville State Schools and is led by instrumental music teacher Paul Meneely.

Mr Meneely visits all these schools once a week and teaches students how to play trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trombone, euphonium, drums, etc.

The HCSC Band gives the more advanced students from each of these schools the opportunity to perform at the higher level and perform in Eisteddfods and competitions like Music Fest.

On Tuesday October 24 the band once again attended Music Fest at Iona College and took out a silver for their performance.

Students from throughout South East Queensland are invited to perform three varied pieces of music.

The HCSC Band entered the Primary School Wind Ensemble Section and performed ‘Air of Nobility’ by James Swearingen, ‘Cantabile’ by Ralph Hultgren and ‘Sneaky, Sneaky’ by Richard Linton.

Congratulations to the students on a great performance and a special thanks to Mr Meneely for all his support.

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State School students recently swapped their uniforms for a red shirt in honour of Daniel Morcombe Day, with staff, parents and family members joining in to show their support.

The day started with the school and community members coming together at Martin Rungert Park and walking to the school in a unified group.

Gold coin donations were collected to raise money for the foundation and a special school parade was held to encourage awareness of child protection.

During the day, different classes talked about the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and looked at or used their educational resources. It is important to raise awareness with all the students and it was great to hear such positive feedback from the students about the cause and to hear of their knowledge. Child protection is everyone’s business.

Menshed focuses on men's health

The Glasshouse Country Menshed is upping the focus on men's health.

Since December of last year the partnership between the Menshed and the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group has increased.

The bi-monthly support group gathering was rescheduled from Wednesday evenings to Wednesday mornings at the shed as the venue. At these men's health forums, high quality professional speakers address a regular group of fifty men and some of their partners who also join the men.

The shed this year has run a first response first aid course with ten of the shedders participating.

Col Brighton, a qualified first aid trainer, Prostate Cancer Foundation Ambassador and now an honorary shedder, facilitated this training. At the conclusion of the course the shed was presented with a defibrillator, which is now kept in a quick access enclosure for any emergency.

At the recent Beerwah Street Party the men presented a great display of the work and service the shedders provide.

Merryatric players have ‘Gone Bush’

Sunshine Coast seniors concert group The Merryatric Players will present their new musical theatre comedy play ‘Gone Bush’ at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Saturday, November 25 at 2pm.

This fun-filled play is The Merryatric Players fifth performance held at The Events Centre and is sure to be just as successful as their past concerts.

Set in the Australian Outback on the property of an eccentric grazier and his family, the plot revolves around the arrival in the district of a group of travelling troubadours.

Over 30 seasoned local performers have been busy rehearsing to showcase their unique stage skills.

They have been preparing costumes, stage sets and diligently learning their lines in anticipation that the success of the program will provide ongoing opportunities for senior performers to come out of the woodwork and tread the boards once again.

Fun, friendship and fellowship

By Sonia Clark The Combined Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club is a great way for local retirees to meet others and enjoy fun, friendship and fellowship.

The not for profit offshoot of Rotary offers members a chance to be involved in an interesting and socially active club with meetings, outings, barbeques and more.

Currently the club has around 47 members with monthly meetings attracting between 35-40 attendees. The meetings are both informative and fun with a general meeting followed by morning tea and then a guest speaker.

Members then stay on for a bit of a catch up and finger food lunch in the hall. A huge variety of topics are covered by the monthly guest speakers.

Past talks have ranged from natural beekeeping to stories from an adventuring sea captain, to health topics and retirement focused information.

Held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the library), the meetings run from 10am until around 1pm.

The Combined Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club includes Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough, with the bulk of members coming from these areas – however anyone from the surrounding areas is welcome to attend.

Maree Butts is the current publicity officer and she is great point of contact if you are thinking of joining.

“We often have barbeques at Turner Park or Ewen Maddock Dam, and the club also has a number of ‘sub-clubs’ such as a reading group, music club and chat morning club,” Maree said.

“We’d love to welcome more members and the club really is a lovely way to meet other local people of a retirement age.”

Each month the club organises an outing and, since the club started in 2001, members have travelled to points of interest, exhibitions, galleries, temples, historical houses and even jails and castles!

Things2Do Enter the Dreamscape

Recyclerama on again

If you are lover of things quirky, collectible, vintage, retro and antique, you will definitely want to head along to the next Recylerama event at the Maleny Showground on November 25 from 7am to 3pm.

Coordinator Lynda Simpson’s advice is that these events are epic. They get really busy so it’s good to get there early so you don’t miss out.

Recyclerama is a great fun day for the whole family, with special recycling workshops for the kids where they can learn to make musical instruments.

There are also cent auctions with three draws of 10 prizes each throughout the day. Tickets for these are $2. Entry is $5 for adults and kids are free.

There will be over 100 stalls on day including carboot and suitcase stalls.

Pirates on deck

Join the rollicking band of pirates from the Buderim Male Choir who will be singing some favourite sea shanties and the best from Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Pirate King’ and ‘HMS Pinafore’ and from ‘South Pacific’ in a special charity concert with the theme, ‘Come sail the ocean blue’.

Irrigation for big backyards

The recent dry may have got you thinking about setting up an irrigation system.

To set up a system for the larger property requires some different equipment than the urban backyard.

To start with, you may not be connected to town water, and so will need to use either dam water or bore water. Each will require a different type of pump, and the size of your system will determine the capacity of the pump.

Don’t skimp on the pump – it will be the key to a good irrigation system.

Take the advice of a local irrigation specialist on what pump suits your requirements.

Most acreage irrigation systems comprise of a main water line from the pump, which forms the feeder line to all the various off-shoots.

This main line is usually a larger diameter poly pipe. The larger size is needed to deliver the higher pressures and water volumes that an acreage system needs.

The most common grade of poly pipe used is called rural (which is measured in inches), but if you’re connecting to the town mains supply, you’ll need to use something which is rated for that purpose. This is commonly a metric grade poly pipe (which is measured in millimetres).

It is a thicker walled pipe to withstand higher pressures, and is usually distinguished by blue stripe markings.

Most applications will use 1¼ - 2 inch rural grade or 32-50mm metric grade poly pipe.

And to handle the higher pressures, the pipe joiners, elbows and T-joints need to be screwed compression-type couplings, rather than the clamps used for smaller diameter poly pipe.

It’s also a good idea to make the feeder line into a loop-circuit. This will help equalise the pressure in all parts of the system.

Your irrigation lines run off the feeder line and are usually 19mm poly pipe.

This then forms the framework for your irrigation network.

If you need to, you can set up micro-irrigators in garden beds – just as you would in urban backyards – using 13mm and 4mm tubing. You can also run lines through lawned areas and install pop-up sprinklers.

But if you need to cover large garden areas, the best set up is a series of elevated sprinklers – either spinner sprinklers or impact sprinklers (pictured) are the best options.

Attach them to the top of a star picket or pole so that they are high enough to irrigate a reasonable area.

A good tip is to add a stop-cock in the pipe leading to the sprinkler. This way you can turn each sprinkler on or off depending on what you want to water.

Alternatively, you can use stopcock valves at the start of a line of sprinklers, which means that you can turn on or off all the sprinklers in one area.

Just like in an urban system, it’s a good idea to consider using filter and pressure reduction systems.

So, irrigation systems for larger backyards tend to be more robust and require a different range of pipes and fitting than does the standard urban backyard.

But the best advice before you start is to take your requirements – don’t forget the sketch plan – down to a local irrigation shop and ask for their advice.

Our first Friday saw 21 people turn up with Jan Lawson taking away first prize.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Submitted by Brenda Briese Saturday, October 28: We played a Stroke competition, with only 17 players which is a little disappointing. Winner was Lesley Eggleston with a fine 70 nett, followed by Cathy Stone on 75 nett. NTPs: 2 and 16 - Hope Hannah, 5 - Jo Malone,18 - Ellen Crook. BRD went to 77 nett.

Thursday, November 2: We held our final Men's Invitation Day for the year. This is always a very popular day with a bit of frivolity involved. We had 94 players in total and played a Canadian Foursomes. Some quite outstanding scores.

Winners Col Penney and Rod Tilden with 58.5 nett, runners up were Margaret Zonca and Trevor Kamp 65 nett on a count back from Bridget and David John. Pin Shots: 2 - Trevor and Mavis Brimelow, 5 - Kevin and Marie Norton, 16 - Tom Major and Lesley Eggleston and 18 - Andrea and Bob Campbell. BRD went to 67.5. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Sunday, October 29: Though not officially a ‘ladies’ day’, Kath Smith and Priscilla Vickers 11 defeated Donna Manning and Sally Adams 2. Croquet, as a rule, doesn’t have a lot of clubs where there are ladies’ days. Women are equal competitors.

Our yearly November tournament began in beautiful conditions, with four players competing in the open event. Ted Singleton from Caloundra, Leigh Harvey from Headland Buderim, joined Vince Carbery and Nick Cram from Maleny. In round 1, Ted beat Vince 18-6 while Leigh beat Nick 19-8. Round 2 saw Nick go down to Ted 14-9 while Vince defeated Leigh 20-11. A tight final round eventuated with Ted narrowly beating Leigh 15-14 and Vince just getting up against Nick 12-11. Ted was the winner with three out of three. Vince placed second with two. Thanks to the referees Val Carbery and Donna Manning. A most enjoyable day was had by all.

The lawns are being renovated on November 20 and will be unavailable for a couple of weeks after that. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm.

Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds.

Beerwah Golf Club Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Men's and medley results: Wednesday's medley single Stableford saw a return to more ‘normal’ results after the recent bout of extremely good returned score cards.

Stewart Meredith needed ‘only’ 38 points to win A grade. Rusty Tillyard, playing his first game since returning from holidays, finished second on 37 points. Five players scored 36.

In B grade, Jeff Butler scored 39 points to win from Keith Musgrave (38). In C grade, Kevin Lynch had the best round of the day, 43 points. Russ Williams (41) beat Tom Major on a countback for second place.

NTPs: 2 - Lance Liebenberg (Headland), 5 John Runge, 16 - Geoff Griggs, 18 - Andrew Betts.

Only four A graders fired under 80 gross in Saturday's monthly medal off the blue markers.

One marker Dan O'Connor showed us how to do it with a fine 69 off the stick. In the nett result, Paul Stewart won with 67 to Dan's 68.

In B grade Tony Mraz had a one shot win over Tony Larch, 68 to 69. The ever cheerful John Baggaley had something else to smile about with a narrow win in C grade. He beat Trevor Sanderson on a countback with 70 nett.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Another busy week of bowls at the club was enjoyed by our members and visitors.

Tuesday winners were Joe Walters, Jim King and Sandra Kapetanic, and no-one won the jackpot. It could be you next week. Be there to be in it.

Wednesday night was well supported with the winners being Chalkies, Amigoes, Handles, Bridge, Club Mighty 10 and Ben Bryce. It was great to welcome some new bowlers to the club to enjoy this format of the game and a get a taste of our delicious burgers.

Friday, the great weather saw a good turnout by our regular players of Scroungers.

It is good to see some new faces coming on Friday to improve their draw bowls in this format of the game.

This coming week we have a busy schedule with additional games on Thursday plum pudding day as one of the big events on our calendar. We have a full green with a number of visiting bowlers converging on our green for a great day of bowls.

On Saturday at 2.30pm we are holding a club selected event for the Scott Fawkes Memorial.

Members please nominate by the end of Wednesday evening bowls to be included in the teams. This helps with the organisation of teams and smooth running of the event.

The Presentation, Paella and Pie Night to celebrate the year will be held on Friday December 1, bookings at the club. Note that this event will be instead of draw and scroungers on that day to allow our volunteers to prepare the club for the evening. Thanking you all for your understanding and hope to see you all at the presentation evening to celebrate with your fellow members as we all start to think about Christmas and the fast approaching festive season.

21st BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR DENTAL EXCEL Marley Dental will be celebrating a milestone event in the coming months, marking the 21st birthday of Marley Dental, now known as Dental Excel in Beerwah.

Back in January 1997, David Marley left the UK and purchased the dental practice from Dr Jeff Cox who returned to university for further study and these days is a specialist in Brisbane.

Since David took over the business it has been a truly family practice catering for patients of all ages providing good basic dentistry to ensure the best chance of staying free of pain and also with the prime

objective of ensuring that patients retain their natural teeth for life.

David has always believed in giving value for money, and has offered no interest payment plan for patients who need more expensive treatment who would otherwise not be able to afford it.

Dental Excel has moved with the times and now dental implants and restorations are available in-house and such things a fast adult orthodontic services are also available.

annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer.

Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns.

She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to indigenous communities.

Dr Atia is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, esthetic dentistry and root canals.

Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.

Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his Dental Degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013.

Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Dr. Kengaiha has particular passions for endodontic (root canal treatment) and

orthodontic (braces).

He is doing additional training in Orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training.

Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
