Hi everyone

Last Saturday Sunshine Coast's largest strawberry farm, Gowinta turned over their 150 acre farm for the day to CanTeen, an organisation that assists young cancer sufferers.

Gowinta Farm owner Leonard Smith showed the generosity that our local area is known for, getting behind an important cause and giving all those that wanted to get involved the chance to get their hands dirty.

Everyone was encouraged to come along and pick as many strawberries that they could for only $15.00, with 100 per cent of the fees raised going to Canteen.

And the results were fantastic with over 1000 people coming along on the day from Brisbane across the Coast and as far north as Gympie.

Our local news correspondent Dakoda Barker took his camera down to Gowinta to get some snaps

of the crowds of people who got involved in the day. You can check out his pics on page 8 and there will be more in next week’s Out and About.

What a top day – congratulations to Leonard and his family for the generosity they have shown and of course good on all those who went along and picked their strawberries for a cause!

“And unfortunately another one did happen on the dangerous stretch of the Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains,” Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell said.

Mr Powell says he has been in continual contact with Main Roads since being elected, in an effort to have the speed limit along the Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains, from the sports fields to south of the caravan park reduced to 80km/h.

“In August this year I was finally informed that the speed on the notorious stretch of road on either side of the Matilda Service Station was to be reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h. This wasn’t exactly what we had been asking for, but it was a win of sorts.

“Just as recently as two weeks ago I was in contact with Main Roads again as the promised time frame of six weeks to change the speed signs had blown out to 11 weeks.

“I was informed late last Friday that the delay was as a result of Main Roads deciding that the original request to have the speed reduced all the way to the caravan park on Steve Irwin Way actually had some merit,” Mr Powell said.

“That really was downright crazy. Considering we had another serious accident involving two cars at the Matilda Service Station this past weekend, I contacted Main Roads to request that this application be given immediate priority considering it had already been approved.

“I am pleased to now report that I was informed last Wednesday that weather permitting, the signs were expected to be changed by Friday.

“This is certainly a great result for our community,” Mr Powell said.

Olivia’s grand vision

For Beerwah’s Olivia Baberowski, being recognised with an award in council’s recent Zooming into 2030 competition meant more than just winning a prize. It meant her vision for the community was recognised.

Olivia, who is currently studying full time at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said she entered the competition because she felt it was important to have a say in the future of the Sunshine Coast.

“I wanted to use the competition to share my own views on what I would like to see for our region in future years, which is encouraging people to use their own personality and creativity when considering their homes, as opposed to the mass urban development we’ve already started seeing,” Olivia said.

“Even as recently as the last couple of weeks, developers have started sub-dividing the block near my home, bulldozing the trees to make way for more housing,” Olivia said.

“It’s important to retain that character which makes Beerwah and the Sunshine Coast unique.

“I don’t want to see the Sunshine Coast end up another Gold Coast.”

Mayor Bob Abbot said the 200 entries into the competition mapped out a clear vision for the future - responsible growth, a healthy environment and a solid community.

“These images and captions represent our community’s hopes and dreams and we need to use this information to safeguard the Coast’s future,” Mayor Bob said.

“The initial plan was to use the images and captions to illustrate the community plan.

“But because each entry says so concisely what we would probably spend 100 words saying, we’re going to use the images to tell the story and use words to illustrate it.”

50 Stories for Pakistan There are certain times when a catastrophic event can unite people across the world and make us realise that we are not always individual countries, but one human race inhabiting one planet. The recent Pakistan floods is one of these times, when 50 writers from around the world, including our very own Rosemary Hayes, contributed stories for an anthology to raise funds for the victims of the Pakistan Flood. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross Pakistan Floods Appeal.

Greg McQueen, a UK writer and publisher, is the creator of the charity anthology, 50 Stories for Pakistan, together with a team of dedicated volunteers who helped put the book together.

“One of the things that made me start this project was a photo I saw via the Guardian Eyewitness app on my iPad. It’s an amazing picture, made more powerful when you realise that the people in it are real,” Greg said.

“What you are looking at are two victims of a disaster that has left thousands dead and millions homeless.”

Greg contacted Getty images and was elated when they gave him permission to use the image as the cover for the book.

“I hope that this image sparks a similar reaction to my own — to do something!” he said.

This is the second time Greg has undertaken a project like this. When he first saw the devastation after the Haiti earthquake he set the wheels in motion and ‘100 Stories for Haiti’ was the result. Over $6,000 was raised for the Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

When our own editorial writer here at GCNews, Rosemary, heard the call for stories for the second anthology, she knew it was a cause she wanted to be involved with and was thrilled when her story was chosen to be included.

“Usually when there’s a disaster the only thing I can do is donate money, but this is the first time I’ve been able to use a skill I have, writing fiction, to help,” Rosemary said.

Writing fiction is something Rosemary has loved to do for many years and she has had over 150 short stories published in woman’s magazines in Australia and internationally.

“Writing short stories is always fun. The challenge for this anthology was to do so in 500 words. I think the writers did an excellent job and the book is filled with a variety of entertaining stories; but best of all, sales will help victims of the Pakistan floods,” she said.

Rural Firies help appreciated Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade were very happy to receive a $2,000 cheque from the International Rally of Queensland (IRQ) which was officially presented on Wednesday, November 3.

The Glasshouse RFB has been involved with IRQ since 1998. Errol Bailey, Clerk of Course of IRQ said, “Our association (with Glasshouse RFB) started with Rally Queensland looking for people to do a volunteer job and it has continued every year since then. They perform a very important role at our events in that they monitor all of the access into spectator points. They provide a security for the area that the forestry really do appreciate and we always like to give a donation

as much as we can to the volunteer groups who help us.”

This year’s three day event saw the Glasshouse RFB travelling to Caloundra, where spectator crowds reached 4,500, and also Imbil.

Charlie Pike, First Officer of Glasshouse RFB said it was a timely donation as funds were always needed. “It’s a really good donation.

We require more and more donations all the time for maintenance and also one of our vehicles has got to be replaced in the next four to fiver years, maybe even earlier, so we’ve got to come up with our share of that which is $20,000. So this donation will go towards that,” he said.

Remember the days of the old school yard?

Mal Langusch If you attended Beerwah School in the late 50’s or early 60’s, the name Mal Langusch may either fill you with dread or a sense of pride and nostalgia. Mal was the headmaster of Beerwah State School from 1958 - 1964, and this week, he celebrates his 90th birthday.

According to Mal’s daughter Ann, he was headmaster at the time when the school toilets were still earth closets, (they were connected to the septic system around this time) and tuckshop was but a once a month luxury. Local koala carer a Pride of Australia finalist Last month, readers may recall we brought you the story of dedicated koala carer and local resident Vanda Grabowski.

Vanda, who has dedicated her life to koalas, was recently announced as one of the top three finalists in the Pride of Australia Medal 2010 for the Environment.

The award, for an individual or group whose actions prove that by making one degree of difference to their local environment people can make a difference to the broader community, certainly describes Vanda.

Vanda Grabowski After gaining a Bachelor of Science in Australian Environmental Studies from Griffith University in 1993, she was a volunteer carer at the Moggill Koala Hospital from 1993 to 2004; was founding member of the Pine River Koala Care Association Incorporated, and became involved in the establishment of the Pine Rivers Koala Rescue Unit in 1999.

Vanda is also a founding member of Koala Action Pine Rivers Incorporated, which concentrates its activities on retaining remaining bushland habitat, and she also currently cares for sick and injured koala joeys from her home.

Add to that her volunteer work at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, and the fact that she gives free Koala Education and Awareness presentations, and it’s easy to see why Vanda was a finalist.

“I didn’t even know there were such things as the Pride of Australia Medals,” Vanda said.

“I was very proud, it was amazing to be in a room with so many volunteers for different things - people who commit their time, money, energy, and whatever resources they have available to a passion they have. It was the most inspirational thing.”

Vanda is modest about her achievements.

“It’s not about me; it’s about them (the koalas).”

You only have to see all the photos on her walls of koalas she has cared for over the years (and she can name every one of them) to know this is true.

But she says she gets back from them as much as she gives as they helped her through a difficult period in her life.

“They gave me back my life so I owe them big time, and I’m going to dedicate the rest of my living years to ensure their survival in whatever way I can. It’s just incredibly special to work with them,” she said.

Koalas in need, and how we can help, are problems that Vanda lives with every day. Assisted by the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN), Vanda has offered to present an information evening to be held on November 24 at 7.30pm at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre.

She will talk about the plight of koalas in the area and how we can all help by growing (or assist in the planting of) native trees that provide the necessary food for koalas.

Everyone is invited to attend this presentation. It’s a chance to listen, see and ask questions about how the community can help support our threatened national icon.

A gold coin donation will be appreciated.

The sweet taste of strawberry success CanTeen state divisional manager Peter McGlennon said the event, which was expected to raise at least $15,000, had the potential to become one of the biggest fundraisers for CanTeen outside of its annual Bandanna Day. “Even in the worst case scenario, $15,000 would cover the cost of hosting a weekend camp for 30 - 40 young cancer sufferers, while at the other extreme, if the public managed to pick every strawberry on the farm, we could end up raising enough to fund three major programs for between 70 - 80 young people,” Peter said.

Strawberries by the box full were literally walking off the strawberry fields as both young and old took advantage of the opportunity to pick as many as they could for only $15.00.

Gowinta Farms’ James Ashby said after one of their best seasons in the past decade, there was plenty of fruit ready and waiting to be picked.

Amy, who was diagnosed when she was 13, and who has now been in remission for four years, said CanTeen had been instrumental in her recovery.

“It’s a massive reassurance, knowing there are others going through the same thing as you, and it also provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time outside the hospital environment, with people who know and understand what you are going through,” Amy said.

Adventure in Egypt and Israel In September 2008 I travelled to Egypt and Israel with my husband and friends from the Caloundra Church of God. We first landed in Cairo, Egypt and spent one night there before flying to Televiv, Israel. Once in Televiv we hired a van and drove to Jerusalem which was our base for the next seven days.

We rented a town house from some Hassidic Jews and had to provide our own cutlery in case it touched something not kosher.

In Jerusalem we walked through the old city and various biblical sights such as the Garden of Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives and the place where Jesus may have been crucified and buried.

One day, our enthusiastic group set out for the Dead Sea. We took a wrong turn and found ourselves driving beside a large concrete wall covered in barbed wire.

We were soon stopped at an Israeli checkpoint and produced our passports to a heavily armed soldier. He gave us directions and we continued on our way through an incredibly arid landscape.

I was amazed to watch our drink bottles get squashed by the air pressure as we dropped further below sea level. When we finally arrived at the Dead Sea I had to take a dip. The water felt slimy but was so relaxing to float on top of.

From here we journeyed to a mountain called Masada, on which a community of Jews found respite from the Roman Empire.

My husband and I decided to climb it rather then take the cable car, for ‘the full Masada experience’. We’ve climbed Tibrogargen I thought, but Masada turned out to be much harder. I now understand why those people wear head scarfs... to escape the searing heat because there is no shade.

Bike Tune 7 Piper St, Caboolture Another day we decided to find the Jordan River where John (the baptist) used to baptise people.

We discovered an old sign and turned down a dirt track to arrive at a large steel gate guarded only by camels...and landmines (as we found out later). Thank God we didn’t get out of the car at that point. With some help (again) we eventually found the tourist friendly Jordan River, complete with ‘holy water’.

It was great to visit places like the Sea of Galilee but I wouldn’t describe the trip as a spiritual experience, I feel just as close to Jesus here as I did there.

We left Israel and flew back to Cairo, which was a real eye-opener for me because it is so different to Australia. The vast majority of people there are Muslim and we arrived during the month of Ramadan, when they all fast between sunrise and sunset.

The traffic in Cairo is extremely chaotic. We were told that there are 20-30 million people in Cairo and over 10 million cars. The air is polluted with exhaust fumes and dust from the desert.

Another thing I didn’t like about Cairo is that every time I went to use a public toilet I had to first buy toilet paper off someone sitting inside the door, is nowhere sacred?

Overall our trip was memorable and educational but I was very glad to get back to Australia.

How to save on your printing costs Recently we heard a comedian on the radio talking about printer ink being the single most expensive commodity on the planet. We don’t know about it being the MOST expensive - but it can end up being quite costly if you do a lot of printing.

To save on printing costs follow these handy tips: • As a general rule, the cheaper your inkjet printer, the more expensive your cartridges.

Some printers seem to be a bargain at $60.00.

But at around $80.00 to buy new cartridges it's not really so cheap!

• Cheaper printers will also generally have one black and one colour cartridge. If you run out of one particular colour you will need a replacement - regardless of whether the other colours are full or not. Try to choose a printer that has a black cartridge as well as individual cartridges for each colour. That way you only buy what you need.

• Some printers will accept generic cartridges which can often be less than half the cost of a genuine cartridge and do the same job.

For example a new, genuine cartridge for a basic Brother printer is around $25.00 retail.

A generic replacement is less than half this price. So for under $40.00 you can buy a full set as opposed to over $100.00 for the genuine version.

• The other option is to have your genuine cartridges refilled rather than replaced. As a guide this costs around half as much as a genuine cartridge and also is the ‘greener option’ as you are not contributing as much to landfill. Most Canon and HP cartridges can be refilled at little cost.

Up in the Clouds The latest buzz-phrase in the world of software is 'Cloud Computing' or even just 'The Cloud'.

This concept refers to the fact that there are thousands of very powerful computers sitting 'up in the clouds', or some equally trivial location out there in cyberspace, which may very well be able to provide some of the heavy duty processing power and storage capacity that our home PCs can’t.

In real terms, what this means for us is that we can start using all of the latest and most advanced software packages without having to upgrade our computers, or fill up their hard drives with software installations. Instead, we simply need to be able to access an Internet Browser, through which we can connect with the online software.

Using online systems also means that we can access our software and data from any internetcapable PC, and not just from the one computer we have the software installed. Generally speaking, the online systems will have their own robust data backup services too, meaning that we don’t have to worry about purchasing our own backup disks and software.

Cloud systems fall under the banner of 'Software as a Service' meaning that such systems are generally charged on a pay-by-the-month scheme, in lieu of a bulk upfront cost. This makes Cloud-based software a convenient choice for most of us, and the perfect money spinner for online businesses, who can gain customers at a low upfront price point then take payment on a continual basis, generally resulting in a greater overall turnover than if they had sold their individual software product for a bulk upfront amount.

Software as a Service (SAAS) aka Cloud Computing can be great for cashflow and convenience. Like any ongoing contract, however, be sure to read the fine print before committing to the use of any such site.

Shake up of development services to meet community needs The development services Sunshine Coast Council provides to the community and industry are set to improve with the launch of the new BRIDGE program.

BRIDGE—Building Relationships, Improving Development, Growing Economy—addresses the findings of a review of council’s development services that made it clear changes need to happen in the area.

The BRIDGE program will re-engineer front end customer services and internal processes with the aim of delivering more accessible information, shorter assessment times, electronic processes, and consistent advice.

It will also improve connections and relationships with industry and the community by partnering with them through the change.

Speaking at an industry briefing recently, council’s Director of Development Services, Julie Edwards, said that BRIDGE program focuses on making the transactions between council and its clients a faster and smoother process.

“A research and analysis project was run earlier this year and highlighted areas we can offer the greatest improvements to development processing and the front end customer service for developers and our community,” said Ms Edwards.

“We are implementing key strategies which impact positively on all aspects of how the community and developers deal with council on development matters.”

These strategies include: • re-engineering of lodgement, assessment and payment processes aimed at reducing the time it takes to get an approval for development and making these processes electronic • a dedicated development call centre for advice, information and queries from the community and developers • more complete, flexible and interactive development information and pages on council’s website • and a defined relationship management practice to improve working relationships between council and all types of developers.

Ms Edwards said that council is committed to delivering new and improved service to meet the community and industry needs.

“Our research has spelt out very clearly to us that recent years have not been smooth sailing,” Ms Edwards said.

“There’s been an economic boom, council amalgamations, and then the global financial crisis—these factors have created a new world in which we operate.

“Our challenge now is to create new and positive ways to operate to deliver on community expectations and facilitate sustainable development for the Sunshine Coast—it’s a challenge we are determined to meet.”

The program will be implemented over the next 18 months, and will involve half yearly industry briefings, regular e-newsletters and a consistent flow of information between council, the community and industry.

In preparation for the Ettamogah Pub’s 21st birthday celebrations happening in the next few weeks, Bluey’s Bar and Grill upstairs has launched a new menu.

To ensure quality and quantity, pub manager Peter Raymond and general manager David Thompson have tried and tested each dish.

Peter Raymond “Purely for research and development reasons David and I had no choice but to try each and every dish,” Peter said, with his mouth full of chicken parmigiana.

“The menu includes grilled-to-perfection steaks sourced from Tasmania, the Darling Downs and Gympie, served with beer battered chips, a fresh seasonal garden salad and choice of sauce.”

The last meeting, held in the garden of Graham and Una Riddel, was well attended and a warm welcome was extended to our two new members and guest speaker, Carmel Browne.

Carmel’s talk on begonias was very informative. She spoke about her collection, the different types and varieties and tips on growing them successfully. Her demonstration of cross pollinating was fascinating and not all that difficult. Members then took advantage of the opportunity to purchase new begonias. Coral Beutel thanked Carmel for her informative talk and presented her with a fruit basket.

Gail and John Gyzemyter travelled to Leura, in the Blue Mountains recently and Gail spoke about highlights of visiting open gardens in the region, in particular, a beautiful garden at Mt Wilson.

The raffle fruit bowl was won by Dorothy Forster. In carpet bowls Neville Woolley, John Anthony and Ian McCarron defeated Ellen Taylor, Alf Grahame and Bevin Raffin 25 -14 after 20 ends. Numerous prizes were won in cards games.

On our bus trip to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary on October 28, the lucky bus ticket was won by John Winterhoff. First prize in the raffle was won by Ernest De Clara. The Mountain Rainbow Singers

Our monthly concert was held on November 1. Residents from three homes attended. Ken, who was our accompanist, played accordion music as they arrived. Frank was MC for the concert, which had a Melbourne cup theme.

An array of colourful hats were worn by all. The rainbows sang two lively brackets. Lola presented a poem “From the horse’s mouth’, a variety of songs were presented during the morning, including ‘Gunsynd’, and ‘Phar-lap’, Burlingston Bertie ‘Dressed to the nines’ dropped by. Dolly presented monologues including ‘Brown boots’. Prizes were handed out for best hats. At the conclusion of the concert a tasty lunch was served by Ev and Wyn. Joe assisted with kitchen duties. Once again this busy band of volunteers provided a fun morning for the visitors. Our thanks to Ken, also Glasshouse Sports Club and Matilda Fruit Barn for their support.

will resume on the second Wednesday of January next year and every month thereafter.

Recently a large group of our members enjoyed a picnic lunch at Moffat Beach overlooking the beach and were lucky enough to witness whales jumping out of the water. Also eight of our members attended the annual Presidents and Past Presidents lunch at Woody Point. The Governor General of Qld Ms Penelope Wensley attended along with Ms Noelene Brown who gave a very entertaining speech in her capacity as the first Ambassador for the Ageing. Entertainment was provided by the Clontarf State High School Band and the PAQ Choristers.

All new members and interested guests are most welcome to come along to our general meetings to see if they would like to join our friendly group of retirees and semi-retirees. We enjoy coffee and chat mornings and monthly outings along with very interesting guest speakers. There is also a Mahjong group who meet every other Monday at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre.

Funding is always an issue, however hopefully in the not too distant future Roys, Mawsons, Bury and Cabrera Roads can enjoy a safer environment for all.

Discussions also touched on the appalling state of our new overpass and surrounding areas, however Anna has advised that this is a main roads issue, not council. Residents can therefore voice their concerns by either phone or email to our main roads department directly, which is something I personally have done a number of times over the past few months.

No horror Halloween for one trick or treater

I would just like to thank all the residents of Beerwah Heights for their generosity shown to our 10-year-old son and his mates on Halloween (Sunday, October 31). Yes, Halloween! Most people can’t stand this American tradition, but kids being kids, they love it. Not sure how much they would get, if any thing at all, we were amazed when they came home with a HUGE amount of chips, lollies, bickies and even a dvd! (our teenager and mates were supervising them).

They said only one elderly gent refused them (fair enough), all others were kind and cheery when their door was knocked on. THANKS BEERWAH! That’s why we love living here!

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Cr Anna Grosskreutz for sparing time in her hectic schedule to come and discuss safety concerns with residents from Roys, Bury, Cabrera and Mawsons Roads last week. Approximately 30 residents also took time from their daily schedules to meet and present to Anna and Brian Peebles (Transport Engineering Eervices) from the Sunshine Coast Council a number of issues that have been in need of urgent attention.

Discussions went well, sticking to the agenda as time is precious, and voices from both residents and council were heard trying to come to resolutions to address these concerns. Mainly the intersection of these roads, the state of Roys Road, severe erosion problems and a school bus stop which relates to the immediate safety of our children. If these issues can be addressed we will be in a much safer, aesthetically pleasing rural environment, which is so very important for both residents and the tourism industry.

On Friday afternoon, October 29, I was involved in a car accident outside Matilda Servo on Steve Irwin Way. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to all those wonderful people that came to my aid. I can’t remember everyone’s names but I know there were a lot of people involved that ensured that I was kept calm and conscious and was removed from the vehicle quickly and safely. I am a very fortunate girl and escaped with bruising and minor cuts.

A special thank-you to the off-duty ambulance and fireman that were on the scene and Dave Morgan who drove to Caboolture to make sure my mum got to the hospital. Also to Paul from Glasshouse Auto Body Repairs for attending to my car. The emergency crew were fantastic as were the staff at Caboolture Hospital. The amount of support and care I have received from everyone has been amazing and I am very grateful.

Glasshouse Mountains not only has the beautiful scenery but a beautiful community as well. Thank you all so much.

Rationing Did you know that clothing and meat rationing was going on in Australia in 1948, three years after the end of World War 2? Petrol rationing continued until February, 1950.

Jack and Mary Ferris’s unused ration coupons remain in Bankfoot House. Ration coupons, about the size of a postage stamp, came in a sheet or booklet of several dozen obtained at the post office. Jack’s ration coupons for clothing, meat, tea and butter remain, as well as a Service Personnel Special Clothing Ration Issue for 1943 for ‘Private JC Ferris’.

Mary’s remaining coupons are for meat, tea, butter, and clothing.

At Bankfoot House, Clementina Burgess kept a house cow for her milk and butter, so she gave her butter ration coupons to her daughter, Mary Ferris, who ran a shop in Brisbane. It was the main lunch ‘takeaway’ in the Newstead area.

Thanks to the ration coupons, Mary used real butter on the sandwiches, so her shop was popular with workers in the area, particularly those from Eagers Motors across the road.

The Commonwealth Government’s reasoning behind rationing was to ensure the equitable distribution of food and clothing, but the scheme was a nightmare to administer and was sometimes defeated by the black market.

When a customer purchased rationed goods, the shopkeeper tore off a coupon, passed coupons back to their wholesaler, and so on up the chain.

Petrol rationing was instituted in October 1940 and met with public outcry. It was not severe until Japan entered the war, when private users of cars were allowed enough petrol for about 26 km a week.

In 1946, tea was rationed at two ounces (60 grams approximately) per person per week, sugar at one pound (440 g) per person per week, and butter at six ounces (180 g) per person per week.

Australia Day Awards

The construction of the Beerwah overpass and roundabout has brought significant changes to the Beerwah town centre and businesses therein.

NOW is the time to nominate a great Australian! CHIPs for heart health

A local coronary health program that utilises ‘lifestyle medicine’ to improve heart health is generating encouraging results for Sunshine Coast participants.

The Coronary Health Improvement Project – or CHIPS for short – uses data from major scientific studies as the basis for teaching better lifestyle directions for those suffering heart problems, high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels.

The little-known project has proved beneficial to around 100 people on the Sunshine Coast over the past four years. For further information, contact Margaret Owens at 5429 6789.

Green Buildings

The Commercial Building Disclosure program has been launched, which will require most owners of commercial buildings to disclose an energy efficiency rating when selling, leasing or sub-leasing office space with a net lettable area of 2,000 square metres or more.

Reports suggest that the commercial building sector currently accounts for about 10 per cent of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions. http://cbd.gov.au/

However the changes have also meant that signage is also needed to ensure tourists and locals know what is available to them.

I know that the local chamber of commerce have been working hard on this and have identified up to nine sites that need signage or upgrade to existing signs to ensure people do still come into Beerwah.

Beerwah and other towns in the hinterland certainly rely on local and also tourist income to assist in meeting their needs. This is not the only issue facing these smaller towns.

The sunshine coast is developing whether we like it or not. With that has to be a plan by local business owners and the community to forge their own future.

The growth on the coast should not be allowed to occur at the risk of smaller towns being swallowed up or overcome by the big boys.

Places such as Landsborough, Mooloolah and Beerwah have an incredible amount to offer our community on many levels.

To do that, it is important that we as a community plan for the future. Not just planning on a sunshine coast level but individually, how they want to be seen to be integrated into the wider community.

I know people who live in the hinterland have a very passionate and forthright belief in their own towns and how they are seen.

The challenge now is to ensure they are able to work through the changes that are taking place but at the same time ensure their own future prosperity. Towns such as Mooloolah, Beerwah and Landsborough are simply too important on many levels and the time has now come to look at what they want to be in 15 to 20 years time.

Preliminary Planning Approval – GlassHouse

At the last Council meeting, preliminary planning approval was given for reconfiguration of one large lot located on the triangular parcel on Fullerton Road and Coonowrin Road, into 63 lots.

The proposal includes urban residential lots ranging in size from 650m2 to 1,280m2 with a 3,730m2 park.

The reasons for approval are listed: i. Council resolved in December 2009 to amend the Caloundra City Plan 2004, to change the designation of the subject allotment from Rural Residential Settlement to Township Residential; ii. The site is located between existing Township Residential and Rural Residential Settlement development; iii. The proposal complies substantially with the minimum lot size and intent of the Township Residential Precinct designation; iv. The constraints on the site can be appropriately managed through the layout and design of the development; v. The site can be connected to all urban services as required; and the primary school being within easy walking distance of the site.

Although a number of submissions were made, most of the issues raised can be addressed. The proposal is considered to comply with the DEOs of Caloundra City Plan and it is considered that: • The site is close to the GlassHouse Mountains Township and the State Primary School.

• A high level of residential amenity can be achieved through vegetated buffers; • Adjacent properties are not involved in farming activities.

Notwithstanding the general support for residential development, a Preliminary Approval is recommended given the vegetated buffers identified in Council’s resolution have not been shown on amended plan, and these buffers will impact significantly on the layout of the development.

Council’s building certification business – Country and Coastal Certifiers – has stopped taking new building certification applications from November 1, 2010. The private certification industry provides an excellent and well-used service, so in September council decided to close its building certification business—to both remove itself from competition with local commercial providers and to enable us to concentrate on core council building services.

As part of the staged process to work towards the planned closure, Country and Coastal Certifiers ceased taking any new applications for building certification services from Monday, November 1. Council will contact applicants by letter to ensure any outstanding final inspections for existing approvals are arranged. Anyone with questions should contact the Building Services Manager on 5420 8601.

Streetscaping capital works – funding alternatives

Council received a report regarding the streetscaping needs for the 44 locations across the Sunshine Coast region. The report sought to address a methodology to access and prioritise needs for streetscape works across the activity centres, town centres and village centres in the region and possible options for funding. This work has now been released for community consultation and I look forward to hearing from you. I will be forwarding a copy to the Chambers to make comment. To meet the community’s expectations for streetscaping is many millions of dollars and thus the need for this report. One of the funding options put to Council was to implement a Streetscaping Levy. It should be noted that Montville already pays such a levy. I seek your urgent feedback regarding this and would appreciate it if you called my office on 5441 8043 to let me know your thoughts. Cancer Council Queensland has commended the Queensland Government for introducing tougher regulations on solariums.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO, Professor Jeff Dunn, said the regulations would discourage solarium use and help to protect Queenslanders from developing potentially deadly skin cancers.

Prof Dunn said the regulations were a necessary response to the growing weight of evidence that solarium use causes cancer.

Prof Dun said research shows that using a solarium before 30 years of age increases a person’s risk of developing melanoma by 75 per cent.

Other adverse health effects include premature ageing, such as wrinkling, irregular pigmentation and altered skin texture, as well as eye damage.

“Fair skinned people who are more susceptible to skin damage will now have complete protection under Queensland law and will not to be allowed to use solariums.

“We strongly urge people to avoid using solariums, which emit UVB and UVA radiation and are known to cause all types of skin cancer, including melanoma.

More than 2,600 Queenslanders face a potentially life-threatening diagnosis of melanoma each year and nearly 300 Queenslanders die of the disease.

Late last month, in preparation for Halloween, Vicky and Hayley from Zumba Vibe transformed the usual Zumba classes at Landsborough School of Arts into a Zombie-filled Halloween Spectacular!

Dozens of people arrived wearing their costumes, from humble cat-ears to full-on devil outfits - while the Zumba girls slapped on the greasepaint to perform a fabulous opening number - Thriller, with a Zumba twist of course!

With smoke effects, decorations and all the staff dressed as Zumba Zombies, prizes were handed out and everyone went away with a smile!

Vicky and Hayley were blown away by the spirit of the community.

“We are so pleased that everyone came along and had fun, we even had to do an encore! these ladies can really party.”

“I had so much fun last night, shakin’ it!” said one of the regular participants. “Thanks Vicky and Hayley for going above and beyond with the halloween extras, loved ‘Thriller’ the best.”

This Christmas, the Starlight Children’s Foundation is calling for help from Queenslanders to grant the wishes of the 408 seriously ill Starlight children who will spend Christmas in Hospital.

In 2010, Starlight is asking Queenslanders to give a child the gift of distraction, by donating towards Starlight’s wish program at any Westpac branch.

Starlight has set the target of $1.5 million to be raised this Christmas in order to grant the wishes of hundreds of seriously ill children on the Starlight waiting list.

Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said Captain Starlight needs Australia to open their hearts and donate towards the Starlight Foundation so that he can make life happier for all the children

who will spend this Christmas in hospital.

“Being in hospital over Christmas can break the spirit of anyone, especially if you are a child. It is incredible to see the amazing transformation a Starlight wish can have for a family dealing with a child’s serious illness.”

There are 408 seriously ill children waiting to have their wish granted. Dealing with exam stress

Practical ideas to help your child cope with exam stress: Encourage your child to stick to a routine of going to bed at a reasonable time, eating regularly and making time to have fun and exercise.

Help them to cut back on coffee or any other stimulants they may be using, as these can increase agitation. Encourage them to drink lots of water instead.

Encourage them to eat fresh fruit, veggies, cereals, grains, nuts and protein - they are all good for the brain and blood sugar levels.

Avoid junk food if possible because it will bring a sudden sugar high and then fall away quickly leaving a person feeling tired.

Try not to nag as they may be feeling a lot of pressure already. It helps to stay calm and offer support – offer a word of congratulations for the effort they are making or perhaps offer to record their favourite TV program to watch later.

Many teenagers are currently facing their end of year exams, which can mean stress for the students and for those who live with them.

Parentline General Manager Wendy Protheroe said the telephone counselling service is offering some tips on the best way to get through this potentially tricky time.

“The best thing parents or carers can do if their child is experiencing exam stress is to try to be as supportive and tolerant as possible,” she said.

“Reassure them there are other important things in life too and that this is only part of the story.

“Let your child know you will help them no matter what and, although naturally you want them to do well, you will not think any less of them if these particular exams don’t work out.”

Over the past five years, almost 5,000 children and young people contacted Kids Helpline about study issues and 15 to 25 year-olds were most likely to seek help about exam stress.

“Stress is a natural response to pressure and some pressure can be useful to keep young people focussed during exam time,” Ms Protheroe said.

“However, for lots of students, when they experience too much pressure for a long period of time, it becomes too stressful and exam preparation and study seem impossible. There are ways that parents can help.”

on the way back his mate had become disoriented.

They carried only one small bottle of water with them. By the time they had arrived at the car the man was delirious and having difficulty standing up.

In the couple of hours drive from the car park into the clinic the young man tragically died. His mate was devastated.

The real tragedy of this story is that on the walk to and from the waterfall they had walked alongside a stream with waterholes in the streams. All the young man needed to do was to drink some of the water and get in one of the pools and cool his body down and he would have lived. These tourists had been told that they should not drink the water so they did not go near it.

How often is life like this? We are having problems in life, things are spinning out of control and the answer is right before our eyes and yet we fail to see it, or we see it and we do not avail ourselves of it.

The relationship that I have with God has given me purpose and direction in life. God loves each one of us and offers to us all answers we need to the deep questions of life. I hope that in the love that I was able to offer to the grief stricken German tourist I helped him in his journey in life.

An article in the Sunshine Coast Daily on Monday, November 1 reminded me of a similar sad incident that I was involved in the late 1990s. The article in the paper was about a 63-year-old German tourist who had died in Kakadu National Park while attempting to do a 12 kilometre walk. Kakadu at this time of the year is very hot with relatively high humidity.

I lived in Kakadu for five years in the 90s. Late one October afternoon the medical clinic in Jabiru rang me and asked me to help with a man who was very upset and needed some support. When I got to the clinic I was introduced to a young German tourist whose travelling companion had died of dehydration that afternoon. I was told they had only been in Australia for a few days and the man had arrived at the clinic with his friend dead in the car.

I took the man home and quickly discovered that this man had very little English and I have no knowledge of the German language. I communicated with him by ringing a cousin who lived in Darwin who was a fluent German speaker. She would talk to the young man and then talk to me. I was to discover that the couple had walked some kilometers to one of the waterfalls in Kakadu and

COMPETITION HEATING UP IN MORTGAGE MARKET The home lending market is hotting up and buyers are advised to go hunting for the best deal to meet their needs – but be warned, you need to know where to look.

The good news for home buyers is that second tier lenders are coming back into the market and are prepared to offer attractive deals to quickly build their market share again, according to Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers.

Equally, Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison says the four major banks are keen to maintain their customer base and may be prepared to “sharpen their pencil” to keep your custom.

“Companies such as Bendigo Adelaide Bank, Macquarie, ING and the credit unions have all started to more aggressively push back into the home lending market in recent months, following their pull back as a result of the GFC,” Teresa said.

“As a result, they are offering competitive interest rates, particularly on fixed loans, and are prepared to lend a higher proportion of the property’s value which is attractive to first home buyers struggling to get their deposit together.

“The packaging up of several banking products with the home loan, low introductory offers,

and reducing or even waiving fees are all carrots being used to secure your business and the banks are often prepared to match them.”

However, these good deals generally aren’t promoted widely to borrowers, with many unaware of the competitive products on offer.

“Many of these deals aren’t being promoted on their TV ads or in their full-page newspaper ads or even in the windows of their branches,” Teresa said.

“It’s generally only when you start talking with the lenders that you gain an insight into some of the deals available and, in

many instances, the lenders are choosing to make these offers only available through mortgage advisers.”

Trying new things

When I was growing up, my family ate what was thought at the time to be a diverse range of vegetables. Most of my friends didn’t know button squash or really did not care for brussel sprouts, but to me it was all regular fare.

Nowadays, there are thousands of different vegetables available to buy at the shop, and an ever increasing number we can grow right here on the Sunshine Coast. Like most things though, it is a bit of a gamble growing a new vegetable.

Will it thrive in these conditions in this season? Will it produce a worthy crop?

And ultimately, will it be edible in the end?

So like any new venture, it is often best to start out with a small trial and see how it goes. Be sure though, that if it does fail because of climatic conditions, you have another crack at it, because it could be the ultimate new vegetable or fruit for you. Here are a couple of my more recently discovered favourites.

Vegetable Spaghetti Cucurbita pepo, known as vegetable spaghetti, noodle squash, gold string melon and even fish fin melon! All of these names attempt to describe the ribbon flesh.

Apparently even shark fin soup has a similar strand texture, something I am not planning to find out for myself.

Like most cucurbits, vegetable spaghetti is relatively easy to grow. Start with a good compost enriched garden bed, followed by regular watering and you will be fighting to contain your vegetable spaghetti plant within no time! Seriously, whilst they are not as rampant as pumpkin, they do rival cucumber and rockmelon when it comes to taking up space.

The biggest trouble I have experienced with vegetable spaghetti has been preparing it to eat! So I have begged my friend (whom I will aptly name Gourmet Mandy) to share one of her vegetable spaghetti recipes with everyone.

Vegetable Spaghetti Ingredients: 1 vegetable spaghetti cut in half and seeds removed (don't peel!)

1 tbsp butter salt and pepper Method: 1. Cook vegetable spaghetti in a steamer until 'strands' start coming away from the skin and the flesh is

cooked.

2. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then using a fork scrape the flesh away from the skin into a bowl. It will come away in spaghetti like strands.

3. Add butter, salt and pepper.

4. Serve either alone (just like pumpkin) or you can top with your favourite pasta sauce and parmesan cheese.

Chocolate Mint Now to dessert and the ever-so-delectable herb – Chocolate Mint. If you are tempted by mint chocolate biscuits, here is an herb that can change the taste of the basic biscuit mix into a mint chocolate delight simply by adding finely chopped leaves.

Mint Chocolate Syrup Ingredients: ½ cup cocoa powder ¾ cup cold water ¾ cup sugar 30 chocolate mint leaves sliced Method: 1. Mix cocoa powder and cold water Talk about putting the cart before the horse!

I should probably say how to cultivate chocolate mint first, but I’ll blame it on my craving for chocolate mint syrup on icecream! Basically, chocolate mint thrives with consistently damp soil and does not run as rampant as most mint plants when given free range. Once established it is fairly hardy and can be propagated easily by cuttings.

I’m off now to raid my garden for my chocolate mint in an attempt to tame my cravings!

I’ve been in the industry for 15 years, and have recently moved to the area after a number of years working overseas. In New Zealand I successfully ran my own painting business, and I’ve also worked in the UK and the United States, so I’ve pretty much seen it all. Online purchase complaints on the rise Minister for Fair Trading Peter Lawlor is warning Queensland consumers about the pitfalls of buying online following a continued year on year rise in complaints.

Mr Lawlor said online shopping had opened a new avenue for consumers and in more recent times had become a particularly attractive shopping option due to the high Australian dollar.

“Online purchases made up 5.5 per cent of the total complaints in 2004 / 2005, compared to 15 per cent in 2009 / 2010,” Mr Lawlor said.

He said online shopping could be a good experience if consumers were diligent and knew what to look out for but could come with pitfalls for the unwary.

“Sometimes goods online appear to be cheap when compared to goods in traditional stores, but when you add the cost of delivery, the price may not be as attractive.

While it’s easy to compare the cost of ‘like with like’ online, for example a particular brand and model of an electrical item, it is much harder to compare more specialised items, such as furniture with some consumers discovering the quality of such goods are not what they expected.

“Some electrical items, such as DVD players, only work in the country for which they were made; others come with plugs for other country’s electricity supplies. While these can be made to work in Australia using converter plugs, the use of these may void some manufacturer’s warranties.

“When purchasing items from overseas sites, consumers need to remember that if something goes wrong it may be hard to enforce your rights and get your money back.”

News update Good luck to our junior teams now playing in the SCTA competition. This season we are fielding teams in Div 1, Div 4A, 4C and 4D. We hope the juniors have fun with their tennis. Also a note for parents – did you know the club has purchased two umbrellas for use on the tables outside the clubhouse? The only request the Committee has is that they are put inside the clubhouse at the end of play.

Our Monday night competition is over for the year and most of our players are looking forward to a break over the Christmas period and hopefully come back in the new year all refreshed for the start of the season in early February. Our adult social tennis is still operating each Thursday night at 7.00pm, all welcome.

Barbeque The Club is holding an end of year barbeque on Sunday, November 14, commencing at 3.00pm.

Tennis will be organised and a sausage sizzle will be supplied. This social gathering is for both the junior and adult members of the club. Juniors will

be having their Christmas break-up at this time and drinks will be supplied. Please come along and enjoy this evening, bring a plate of food to share, to add to the festivities.

AGM Our AGM will be held on Sunday, November 14 and all members are asked to become involved in some way or another to get new ideas into the club. All positions will be declared vacant and we are looking for anyone interested in helping out on the committee either in an executive role or as a committee member.

Over the past few years the Club has been very successful in going forward with upgrading the clubhouse and increasing its membership. Please support the few members running the club to help it develop into a friendly and successful club.

Our coach and president has not been feeling well these last couple of weeks and everyone at the Tennis Club wishes Ray all the best for a speedy recovery. Carolyn has been a great help during Ray’s absence. He is now back on board and hopes to be feeling better soon.

Friday Night Tennis – The rain did hold off to get that last match in before the semi-finals this week. Semi-finals for Peewee 1 will be at 3.30pm at Glasshouse this Friday. Semi-finals for Peewee 2 and Peewee 3 will be at 3.30pm at Landsborough, followed by Div B and Div C at 4.30pm, then Div A1 and A2 at 6.30pm.

Please try and be early for your match, rather than late. All the finals will be at Landsborough the following week followed by the presentation and breakup. Come and cheer on the teams in the semi-finals and finals. It hasn’t been the best season this time for matches with all the rain, but congratulations to all the players during the season and good luck to all the semi-finalists.

At the Annual General Meeting held on Sunday, October 23, the following committee people were voted in for the 2011 season – Shane Gleeson, Lesley Gleeson, Sonya Everden, Kelly McCombe, Nick Lillecrapp, Rachel Huddleston and Paul Storer. Congratulations to these people and thankyou from the players.

Unfortunately no-one has been willing to take on the position of president at this stage. The person who takes on this position will be well supported by past presidents and the new committee.

Everything has been set in place by the previous committee and the new season will flow on with ease.

The club will be entering teams in Auskick, Under 8, Under10, Under12, Under 14, Under 16 and hope to have the senior’s team up and running again. This group has started training at the ground at 6.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and registration forms can be filled in at these times. The team is looking forward to building a good rapport with the Landsborough Pub and will be holding raffles there each Sunday at lunchtime.

A group of the youth players have been having some intense skills training on Wednesdays at 4.00pm to maintain and build on the wonderful work that they did this year and be ready for 2011 competition. New players are welcome to join in to gain some skills and fitness before Christmas. Sign on will be held at the start of February and teams will start training shortly after that.

In 2010 all three youth teams made it into the finals series. The Under 12 and 16 teams went into the grand final and the Under 12 team came out with the victory, winning the premiership.

Their coach is keen to work with them again next year. Coaches will be sought for all age groups between now and the beginning of the season. If you would like to take on a coaching role please contact the club or come along to one of the preseason training sessions.

Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club is running the Milo in2Cricket program again this season. It’s a fun way of introducing cricket to both boys and girls aged five to eight years. The registration fee is $50.00.

Each participant receives a plastic bat, soft ball, t-shirt, hat, backpack and water bottle.

The sessions will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 4.00pm – 5.00pm at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Ground. The first session will commence on Wednesday, November 17.

Annual Belletty Memorial Karate competition Last weekend, Beerwah played host to the annual Belletty Memorial Karate competition.

This is the eighth year of the competition to be held at Beerwah and attracted clubs from Lismore, Ipswich and Strathpine, as well as Beerwah club members.

The Beerwah competition is the only regional tournament held in SE Qld and allows many first time competitors an opportunity to have a bit of fun.

Over 70 participants were in two or three categories, and fighters ranged from six to 50+ years of age.

Whilst many people were novices, we had many National title holders also competing.

The Beerwah Karate club trains at the local Community Hall on Mondays and Wednesday under Sensei Ann Hill, 4th dan. For further information, please phone 5491 3535.

Queensland Vets go for Gold Local real estate agent Julie Walton swapped her normal office wear for Maroon last month when she travelled down to Canberra as part of the 2010 Veteran Women’s 35+ State Hockey team. The team competed in the 2010 Veteran Women’s Tournament where they took out gold in the grand final, toppling rivals New South Wales.

Player numbers were down on Wednesday morning for social bowls with some of our ladies away at Grafton for an annual bowls carnival.

Winners of the pairs were Nev Woolley and Rob Scullion and the triples game was won by Jenny Hobson, Margaret Lehmann and Di Hunt.

by Andrew Grigor’s, ‘Glasshouse Country Meats’ team on 95 points with the runners-up a tie between ‘The Battlers’ and ‘Alfresh’, both on 88 points. The nightly prize ‘out of the hat’ went to ‘The Leftovers’. After week four, the progress ladder now has ‘The Battlers’ (Laurie Evans Real Estate) in the lead on 11 points, ‘The Coachmen’ (Glasshouse Country Coaches) on 10 points, and in third place ‘The Leftovers’ on nine points.

Competition is ‘hotting up’ with only two weeks to go in the series.

Thursday’s Open Pairs was abandoned due to heavy rain overnight and morning.

Friday Night Bowls was won by Marleen and Trevor Bertram on 193 points with the runnersup Philip Shaw and Margaret Lehmann on 189 points. In third place with 173 points were Troy German (having only his third game) and Lindsay Henderson. The prize for the night ‘out of the hat’ went to Bede Burton and Jack Timm.
