Over the last couple of years the Glasshouse Country News team have organised Pink Ribbon Breakfasts which through the support of all the community who attended, and the local businesses who provided prizes, were really successful.

And although they were a lot of work to bring together, it was a really rewarding feeling when we were able to send our fundraising results off to the Cancer Council.

Cancer Council uses the funds to help raise awareness about breast cancer, as well being allocated to research, education and patient support programs.

This year there were quite a few groups who have created local pink ribbon events and I am sure that, as they send away the funds raised, they will feel like at least they have

been able to do some small thing towards changing the future for breast cancer sufferers.

On Monday morning I went along to a Pink Ribbon Breakfast held at the Terrace Cafe at Beerwah, which was organised by the enthusiastic staff at Westpac, Beerwah Branch, it was a great morning and it was nice to catch up with so many lovely local ladies.

If you haven’t had a chance to get along to a Pink Ribbon event there is a breakfast planned at Mad Hatters Tea & Gifts at Landsborough on Friday, from 7.30am – but you must make a booking to attend.

On Sunday, October 17, celebrations for the Canonisation of Mary MacKillop were held across the world as well as in our local community, with around 160 people from local and surrounding areas attending a joy filled event at the Mary MacKillop Centre at Beerwah.

The celebrations included a prayer service, scripture, lunch, afternoon tea and lots of music. There were singers from Landsborough, Mooloolah, the Singing Belles group, as well as a performance by Jenny Carr, singing a song she composed especially for the day. Talented artist Tina Homer also created a painting of Saint Mary MacKillop especially for the celebrations.

People were lining up to have their photo taken alongside Saint Mary.

A community sing-a-along of well-known Australian songs finished off the day.

Pam Lever, community member of Beerwah Parish, said those who attended were grateful that they had been able to participate and have the opportunity to celebrate.

“Everybody went away feeling that they had celebrated Mary MacKillop in a really hearty Australian way. I’m grateful the way the whole community pitched in to make it a successful day,” she said.

The Bligh Government and Sunshine Coast Council have announced funding for a new $850,000 access road to the Beerwah Sports Grounds to address current safety concerns.

Minister for Main Roads Craig Wallace said the new road would ensure safe access was available to the sports grounds – an important community venue in the Sunshine Coast hinterland town.

“The new access will mean motorists heading to the sports ground will be able to head directly to the park without negotiating traffic on the Simpson Street / Roberts Road roundabout,” Mr Wallace said.

“The community has been asking for this access to be improved and we have heard the calls loud and clear.

“My department is partnering with Council to take action to resolve this important safety issue, and funding of the new two-lane bitumen access road will be split between the two levels of government.”

The new access will be from Simpson Street, run parallel to the rail line and about 400m north of the existing single-lane gravel entrance on Roberts Road.

Sunshine Coast Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz, said the improvements to the park access road will include redesigning and installing culverts under the road to improve drainage as well as laying a new road.

“This is an exciting step forward for the community who has been eagerly awaiting the start of works on this project,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

“This week the State Government has agreed to pay 50 per cent of the project cost, and with design work and approvals already underway, council will be able to start on the ground work in a few weeks time.

“I would like to thank the members of the local community who use the sports ground for their patience and Minister Wallace and his department for working with us to negotiate this great outcome.”

Council is expected to start work on the project before Christmas, weather permitting.

Chair of the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee John Bennett said the news was unbelievable.

“The new entrance will make the sports ground so much better, not as dangerous and so much easier to access,” John said.

“On behalf of the management committee I would like to thank Anna and Council for all they’ve done.

“Anna has worked really hard and done a great job, without her we’d have nothing,” John said.

Cr Grosskreutz said signage will be installed in the very near future on the site to keep the community informed of the works that will be undertaken.

The new entrance is expected to be completed by Easter, 2011.

Cr Jenny McKay and Cr Adrian Raedel from the Moreton Bay Regional Council also do their best to drop by when my mobile office is in their patch. I made a promise very early on that I would always be approachable and available for constituents and I will certainly continue to do this while I am the local member.”

Mr Powell’s mobile offices will take break for a few months as the busyness of the Christmas / New Year period takes hold, but he will re-commence early in 2011.

Work has finally commenced on the hinterland’s very first Aldi supermarket, right here in Beerwah.

There was much excitement around town last week as fences were installed and excavators arrived on site in Simpson Street, preparing to start work on the construction of the German supermarket giant, which is expected to be open

by Easter next year.

Aldi’s managing director for Queensland Viktor Jakupec said the new supermarket would be the size of an average Aldi store at around 1,500 square metres, and stock the full range carried by the popular discount chain.

“The new Beerwah store will be a typical Aldi store carrying our full range of products,” Mr Jakupec said.

Computers4kids launches local appeal An innovative campaign that gives superseded computers a second lease of life is looking to kick off in Glasshouse Country, with locals being urged to donate their old computers so they can be used by those in need.

The project, Computers4Kids was initiated by the Rotary Club of Nundah, and has proven to be so successful that the Rotary Club of The Glass House Mountains is looking to get the local community on board, and they've set up a local collection point at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre.

“It’s always exciting when we open a new store in a small community, and we are definitely looking forward to providing some competition in the grocery and retail line,” he said.

Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said if there was ever a topic that generated calls to her office, it was the question of when Aldi was coming to town.

“I am aware that lots of locals currently travel outside the region to shop at Aldi stores in Caloundra and Morayfield, so this is exciting news for our community,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

“People don’t believe it until they see something start to happen, so when works commenced on site last week, there was certainly a lot of excitement, and a sense of relief,” she said.

Rotary 2011 calendar available now The calendar was launched a few weeks ago and was distributed to retailers, businesses and shops in the local area. As most of you know, the photos chosen are the winners of the calendar competition held every year by Rotary for insertion into the calendar and always feature our Glasshouse Mountains. The proceeds of the sale of the calendars go towards community projects.

Grants to provide more support for local veterans The Beerwah Peachester RSL sub branch is one of 59 ex-service organisations across the state to have benefited from funding to help continue vital support services to local veteran communities.

The sub branch received just over $4,000 in funding for computer, internet access, travel and consumables.

According to the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon $925,223 has been made available through the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) program, to help Ex-Service Organisations (ESOs) provide essential on-the-ground support to veterans, war widows, widowers and their families.

“Ex-Service Organisations are often the first point-of-contact for many veterans needing assistance to access their benefits. This funding will help ensure they have the right tools, equipment and resources to continue their great work.

“The BEST program has helped purchase resources including internet access and printers; employing trained advocates, pension and welfare officers, and also covers travel expenses for ESOs who extend their support to veterans outside of their area.

“The support provided by ESOs also greatly assists the veteran community in understanding what benefits they are entitled to and how they can access them, including lifestyle or support programs on offer through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the wider veteran community,” Mr Snowdon said.

Rowie ran away from home at the age of 14 and never finished high school, however, went on to become one of the most successful women in Australia. She was twice listed in the Australian BRW Fast 100 Rich List as having one of the fastest growing Australian companies and was also twice listed in the Top 20 Young Rich List for being one of the richest people in Australia, under 40.

All of the money she gains from these motivational talks for school students she donates to the RSPCA.

Rowie shared her positive, energetic, tough and hard-hitting attitude with female students in Years 8, 9 and 10. She also had a lunch conference with the senior student leader girls, where she asked about our goals for the future.

She seemed genuinely interested and offered to get some of the girls in contact with people she knows in their field of interest.

Fortunately, I was one of these lucky girls. I emailed Rowie that afternoon and received a prompt reply. She was delighted to hear from me and gave me the email address of her friend and we’ve been in contact ever since, with a vocational placement looming in the near future.

Rowie is a truly inspirational and thought provoking person who lit up the room the moment she entered, and we are all very privileged to have met her.

A huge thankyou to Mr McIntosh, Ms Hayden, Mr Hennessey and Mike Turner for arranging this fantastic day.

Mooloolah community rallies behind grieving family It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, to lose a child, and sadly for one Mooloolah family the nightmare has become a reality. Andrew and Trudy Olive lost their young son Tom last month, while their daughter Laura, three, lost her big brother and best playmate.

Tom died from cardiac arrest, but the cause is unknown. While nothing can take away the pain, the support from the Mooloolah community has given the Olive family a little light at this tragic time.

“The overwhelming power of love and support… it kind of does pick you up and overpower the grief and the loss, it really does,” Andrew said.

“I didn’t know, I guess, what community spirit was, but I’ve had a crash course 101. It’s touched everyone, and they were all here to help and they still are.”

What makes all the support they’ve received so touching is that it’s support the Olive family hasn’t asked for.

“It’s more the goodwill of the town, the fact they want to do something for us. I feel there are more needy people in society than us, but it’s the town’s way of doing something,” Andrew said.

The support has included providing meals, help with cleaning, and also the local bottle shop, the local pharmacy and the local butcher have run a raffle for the family.

The community is also organising a fundraiser at Mooloolah Hall on November 6, on what would have been Tom’s fifth birthday.

Andrew’s voice is full of pride when he describes his son.

“Tom was a Tom Olive character, wellmannered. A large boy for his age but he was gentle, he was caring in nature and polite.”

The community fundraiser for the Olive family gets underway from 3.00pm at the Mooloolah Hall on Saturday, November 6, and will include a live band, raffles, jumping castle, merry go round, and more. Food will be available for sale, and there will be a liquor license. Entry by gold coin donation.

Blessed with beautiful weather, the Mooloolah Valley and District community day held last weekend was certainly a crowd pleaser.

The organising committee estimated a crowd of around 2,000 turned out at the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre to celebrate the day, which featured plenty of market stalls, free entertainment and rides, school performances and lots of yummy food.

One of the highlights of the day was a special performance by local band City Limits, featuring Mooloolah’s very own postmaster Barry Back, while the dunking machine also proved popular, particularly when Ken Grant, of White’s IGA and school chappy Dave sat in the hot seat.

Locals agreed it was a great opportunity to socialise and network, with a large number of community groups represented on the day.

Organisers were also impressed by the involvement of the local business community, who generously supported the day, which was sponsored by Whites IGA and the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre.

Planning is already underway for next year’s event, which promises to be even bigger and better!

Other exciting happenings at the community centre include a new, monthly clothes and books swap. The first event, which will be held on the first Thursday of each month from 9.00am - 12.00noon at the Centre, will be on Thursday, November 4.

Also coming up at the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre is the first of a series of regular monthly community barbeques, on the first Friday of the month. Come along and check it out on Friday, November 5, from 5.00pm - 8.00pm for a gold coin donation. Proudly supported by White’s IGA. A recent Business Council of Australia report concluded that if businesses in Australia could increase communication by five per cent, they would double profitability.

I endorse the views of a recent correspondent (‘Beerwah streetscape’, GCNews, October 13) regarding our unattended streetscape. To the almost 12-month-old rail overpass – not a single blade of grass cut on our verges, or roundabouts maintained. Come on council. Are we trying to win the untidy or grubby town award?

Overseas scam artists have had their fair chop at everyday Australians, however they’ve recognised a weakness in our farming communities who haven’t done so well over recent years and are now targeting older farmers looking for a quick fix to money problems.

Put pressure on Minister

All I can say to Jeff Price of Beerwah (GCNews, October 20) is ‘Great questions – now let’s ask the Minister for Transport for the answers’. Mr Price rightly questions the government’s promise to deliver reduced travel times for commuters once the Caboolture-Beerburrum rail duplication was opened. So far we have seen little or no change to travel times and now that the government has further delayed the continuation of the duplication through to Nambour until 2031, we are not likely to see reduced travel times any time soon. I can assure Mr Price and other concerned residents that this is a big issue for me and I will contact the Minister for Transport again demanding answers. Stay tuned for updates.

Louise Halis Where did you travel to? In July 2010 my mum, dad, little brother Blake and I went to Egypt. Egypt is a country in North Africa. We flew into Cairo, which is the capital of Egypt, and then out of Luxor.

How long did you go for? We went for one week. We spent three days in Cairo then caught the train down to Luxor and had another three days there.

What was the weather like? Hot and sunny and very dry! The day we left Luxor the temperature was 55C. We had to spend the middle of the day indoors or under cover as it was too hot to be in the direct sun, we also had to make sure we drank lots of water.

Although the longest river in the world, The Nile, goes right through Egypt, 95 per cent of the country is desert.

What were the highlights of your holiday?

Going to see the Pyramids was my favorite part. I liked the pyramids because I liked the colour of them and we got to ride a camel around each one. My brother loved going down into the tombs, it was a very small tunnel that went deep into the ground that we had to climb along. We also went on a faluka (old traditional wooden sailing boat) down the Nile, it was nice and cool on the water and we ate rockmelon and watermelon.

In Luxor we went to and from places in a horse and cart, this was very strange to see and something that you do not see often in Australia. To get from Cairo to Luxor we went on a sleeping train, we had never done this before and it was really exciting for my brother and I to have dinner on the train and then have our chairs converted to beds. When we woke up in the morning we were in Luxor!

What was the most unusual thing you experienced? The Pyramids and The Valley of the Kings were very unusual because we were able to go into the tombs and see the way that the Kings and Queens were buried. It was also fascinating to see how the pyramids were made and try to imagine living all those years ago and building something so magnificent that today is one of the seven wonders of the world.

Any other special information? The largest pyramid ever built is the Great Pyramid of Giza, which was built by King Khufu during the period 2551 B.C. to 2528 B.C. Its sides are 230 metres long and today it stands at 137metres high as part of its top has been dismantled.

Up the coast

The tradition of going to the coast for outings and holidays is being celebrated at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre during the month of October.

The exhibition, ‘Up the Coast: Our Stories, Our Collections’ features objects, photographs and stories from the Sunshine Coast heritage collections.

Peachester History Committee has contributed some items, including memorabilia from our Inigo Jones collection. Although Inigo’s chief aim as a long-range weather forecaster was to help farmers plan for the coming seasons, he was often consulted about the weather for functions and holidays.

Our collection includes many photos and anecdotes about visits to the coast, with Caloundra featuring from very early times as a favourite destination.

Holidays were rare for pioneer farmers in the early 1900s, because of transport and financial difficulties, but there were two families from Peachester who decided to go together to Caloundra. They packed all the necessary equipment on the bullock wagon, yoked up the bullocks, and started off on the journey with the older children riding on the wagon. Both mothers and the babies went in a sulky.

The bullocks were kept travelling until midnight, then tied up until daylight when they started off

to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Morning tea at Nudgee Beach, then on to have a look at the koalas, then on to Mt Coot-tha for a barbecue lunch. There are still vacancies on the bus. GCNews has very generously offered to send a photographer over to our Christmas party, around 10.00am, so make sure you wear your best smile. again, arriving at Caloundra at 9.00am. A horse was tied behind the bullock wagon so they could muster the bullocks for the return home.

Few people had their own transport in the 1920s.

The late Grace Hodgens recalled ‘Our picnic party travelled from Beerwah on Ken Hendren’s cream truck to the Crossing, and then by boat to Black Flat (now Tripcony Park). After lunch we walked along the beach to the Dicky wreck.

We carved our names on the wooden deck, and I remember how the sand squeaked as we jumped from the old wreck.

For a day trip to Coolum, we travelled from Beerwah to Nambour by train, and then from Nambour to Coolum on the cane train.’

There is a story from the 1930s about a newly married couple who rented a cottage at Caloundra for their honeymoon. They travelled in the groom’s truck, and the supplies they took with them included two roosters in a cage which they had received as a wedding present, so they were able to have roast chook during their stay.

There were no fridges in rented cottages ... and no take-aways ‘up the coast’ in those days.

Glasshouse Country Christian College celebrates decade of quality education On Friday, October 15, Glasshouse Country Christian College celebrated 10 years of providing education. Festivities began with a celebration assembly held at the College, with singing, dancing, reminiscent speeches, cutting of an event cake by the current captains and old traditions such as ringing the cow bell to commence. The afternoon MCs were two of GCCC’s founding students. Guests were invited to stay to view the extensive displays, and GCCC Hospitality students once again provided a lavish array of tempting treats to eat.

For a more formal celebration, a dinner at the House of Laurels was held in the evening. Amidst delightful classical decor approximately 80 guests enjoyed a lovely meal, heard speeches from representatives of different facets of the College’s history and shared many special memories of GCCC. In all, God was honoured.

With a current enrolment of over 560 students from Prep to Year 12, there has been tremendous growth in numbers of staff and students, facilities and community presence. GCCC continues to grow in faith and knowledge with ongoing support and hard work from many volunteers, as it was for those with the initial vision. To God be the thanks for His provision.

St Paul’s is a Prep to Year 6 Primary School of Lutheran Education Queensland with the Christian faith guiding the ethos and values of the school.

Oh how time flies at GCCC! It only seems like yesterday we were bidding farewell to the first group of Year 12’s to graduate from the College and now it’s almost time again to say goodbye.

But the year isn’t over yet, and though this year’s group of unique graduates are hastily counting down the days, many exciting events are still on the menu for their last month at GCCC. We recently celebrated our 10 year anniversary with an afternoon of colourful festivities for the students including the beautifully worded recollections of former principal Mrs Cheryl Bryers.

This was followed by an evening of humorous and moving reflections for the staff and special guests. The trip down memory lane was much enjoyed by all and it was clear that the College had come along way from its fledgling beginnings in 2000. On the agenda for the next few weeks are the annual Awards Night for both primary and secondary students, the Year 10 Dinner Dance and of course the much anticipated Year 12 Formal and Graduation on November 18 and 19.

Thank goodness we have summer holidays to recuperate!

Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes

From Mooloolah Primary School to the jungles of Papua New Guinea!

Wow! That was the reaction from students at Mooloolah Primary School when they took part in operation Christmas child recently. Organised by the RE team and supported by parents and teachers as part of our lesson on care and compassion, a record 49 shoes boxes were filled with donated gifts and then wrapped by students and parents.

This year the boxes are headed for the jungles and poverty stricken areas of PNG where for some children, this will be their first Christmas gift they have ever received. It was a great reminder of how blessed we are in Australia and a wonderful way to share what we have with the less privileged.

Many children wrote letters which they included in the boxes along with gifts such as toiletries, school supplies, something to wear, love and something special. A huge thank you to all the families who supplied gifts and to Mooloolah Valley Church who have donated the $9.00 a box it costs to transport the boxes.

The students are looking forward to seeing video footage of their boxes arriving on December 25!

Tread carefully before backing Caloundra South

Congratulations to the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch, which has been allocated a grant of $4,068 from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) programme. The funds will be used to fund a computer, internet access, travel and consumables.

The BEST programme aims to assist local veterans’ groups to provide pension advice and welfare assistance to veterans, ex-service people and their families.

Eye care

World Sight Day 2010 was held recently and reminds us of the need to care for our eyes and our sight.

This year, the day was focussed on avoidable vision loss and blindness.

Statistics from Vision 2020 Australia, around 575,000 Australians over the age of 40 experience vision loss, with around 75 per cent of these cases being preventable.

I encourage all residents to have their eyes tested regularly, particularly if they are over the age of 40, or have a family history of eye disease, are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent or have diabetes.

A State Government decision to wrest planning control for the proposed Caloundra South development from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council is worrying.

It sets an unwelcome precedent on the Coast and indicates the developer is closer to the ear of the Government than a local authority.

That’s the short-term concern. The main worry lies in the future and the effect the proposed 22,000 homes will have on the fragile Pumicestone Passage.

Just a few days ago the annual Healthy Waterways Partnership report card showed the passage had deteriorated in the past 12 months, dropping a full grade from C+ to D+.

Worryingly, this was the only waterway in the region to go backwards rather than forwards.

The main culprit is nutrients and silt being washed into the system and that’s even before Caloundra South rears its ugly head.

It would take a very naive person indeed to believe that the construction of another 22,000 homes, roads and associated facilities would not significantly contribute to this degradation.

The flow-on effect has equally disastrous potential as the degraded waters will add significantly to the declining health of Moreton Bay. The bay improved by a full grade this year but there’s no prizes for guessing what its condition will be once Caloundra South sits on the edge of Pumicestone Passage.

It will be a sacrilege if the passage is allowed to deteriorate and the grab for the developer dollar is allowed to erode our heritage and that of our future generations.

While the government is hell-bent on pushing this development through quickly, at the very least a full environmental impact study should be undertaken without delay.

And not an environmental impact study which is going to tell the government what it wants to hear.

If the world’s experts need to be called in – then so be it.

The full report should also be made public. Our environment is too precious to warrant anything less.

Old Peachester Road – Speed Review

A few weeks ago, I advised that Council had carried out a speed review of Old Peachester Road after numerous requests from concerned residents, and a decision was made to reduce the 100km speed limit to 70km for the full length of Old Peachester Road. My office has received a number of enquiries regarding this decision, and I thought it would be beneficial if residents understood the extensive process that a Speed Review entails.

In Queensland, speed limits are set in accordance with Part 4 of the Queensland Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), this ensures that speed limits are consistent and credible throughout the state.

Local governments set speed limits on roads under their control in accordance with the MUTCD. A number of factors and criteria are considered when determining what an appropriate speed limit might be for a particular road.

These criteria include the environment in which the road is located; pavement, shoulder and lane width; horizontal and vertical road alignment; traffic volume, activity and prevailing speeds; frequency of intersections and property access; on-road parking activity; type of roadside activities; presence of unsignalised pedestrian crossings; presence of traffic signals; property setback; presence of line marking and medians; and proximity of roadside hazards and standard of protection.

Speed limits are therefore determined after consideration of a number of safety factors, not simply the standard or appearance of a road.

A report detailing these factors is tabled at Council’s Speed Management Committee (SMC). The SMC is a technical committee made up of representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Transport and Main Roads and Council Officers. The Committee reviews the technical detail in the report and provides a recommendation to Council on the appropriate speed limit.

Shade sail damaged at Beerwah skate park

The shade sail at the Beerwah skate park was an unfortunate casualty in the recent wild weather. As you may have noticed, it has now been completely removed. Council staff are currently obtaining quotes for its replacement, which will be paid for through insurance. Once we receive the go ahead from Council’s insurers, the new shade sail will be installed with a few weeks.

Landsborough-Caloundra Street development application Caralan Pty Ltd will appeal Council’s decision in the Planning and Environment Court at Maroochydore in respect to a decision to refuse a development application for a Reconfiguration of a Lot in respect of land particularly described as Proposed Lot 3 on SP210065 Cancelling Lot 3 on RP129417 and Lot 4 on SP221018 at Caloundra Street, Landsborough.

Support for Mooloolah Valley Automotive Pty Ltd I have received a petition signed by 203 residents in support of the continuation of a local business situated at 9b Paget Street, Mooloolah. I’m informed that the business has been running for the past two years and has developed a strong reputation for reliability and service with locals and the surrounding area. I will be tabling the petition at Council’s next Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday, October 27.

Walk for Daniel – October 29

I will be attending the annual Walk for Daniel which is being held on Friday, October 29 leaving from the Suncoast Christian College Woombye at 7.00am and finishing at 8.00am at Kolora Park, Palmwoods. This is a beautiful walk which honours the memory of Daniel while promoting a safer community for children in our area. Over 600 coast residents walked last year and the organisers believe that this year will be even bigger. I certainly will be attending and look forward to catching up with old friends from past walks. For those who want to arrive early to partake of a complimentary sausage sizzle breakfast, you will need to be there at 6.15am.

On Wednesday, November 17 at 1.30pm we have ‘Then and Then: A Memoir by Art Life Chooks’ author Annette Hughes who will introduce the python wrangling hero of her book, poet and composer Geoffrey Datson, to talk about his own story, of coming full circle and arriving back home. Ingredients • • •

Grilled veal cutlets with lemon chickpea puree and tomato mint salad Contributed by Trish Cashin, Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre

four veal cutlets lemon chickpea puree 2 x 400g cans of chickpeas, drained and rinsed well • ¼ cup chicken stock • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing.

Tomato mint salad Mix grape tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, olives and small sprig of mint, extra virgin olive oil and 2 teaspoons of red wine. Toss and serve with meat.

Method

Heat chickpeas in a saucepan over low heat until heated for five minutes then process or mash adding lemon juice and chicken stock, slowly add the olive oil.

Season to taste, mix well.

Brush veal cutlets both sides with olive oil and season. Char grill or barbecue cutlets for three minutes each side, remove from heat, cover and stand for three minutes.

Serve cutlets on a bed of chickpea puree with a side of tomato mint salad.

New real estate laws simplify contracts process Changes to real estate laws that streamline and simplify the residential real estate contract process have come into effect this month.

Minister for Fair Trading, Peter Lawlor, said the changes to the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act 2000 would bring fairness to vendors without compromising the rights of buyers.

The Minister said under previous rules the process of delivering real estate contracts was very prescriptive.

Agents had to present the required warning statement, contract and other documents in a very specific order and as a result, some buyers were using technical breaches as small as a page being out of order when a contract was faxed, to terminate contracts.

Minister Lawlor said under the new rules the documents don’t have to be in a strict order, but

the warning statement must still be attached to the contract.

He said the change will protect vendors from such technical breaches without compromising the rights of buyers,” he said.

“Buyers will keep their vital protections and the right to a cooling off period, as well as the provision of important information in a warning statement from selling agents.

“The warning statement advises buyers of their cooling-off rights and that they should seek professional advice from lawyers, building inspectors and valuers before they finalise a contract.

“I also recommend that if a buyer is considering terminating a contract or exercising their coolingoff rights they seek independent legal advice.”

What’s on in November

• Once your spring flowering bulbs – such as jonquils, daffodils and iris – have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry dark place.

• Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed along the flower stalks. Just plant them into a pot of quality potting mix and wait for them to grow.

• The recent rains and warmer temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers in the garden. Pick them off and squash them, or use a pyrethrum or bacteria based spray.

• Time to prune your azaleas and dead head roses to encourage continual flowering.

• Keep an eye out for bronze orange bugs on your citrus. Knock them off and squash them or spray with Confidor.

• Fruit flies will start to appear. Keep them at bay by cleaning up old rotten fruits and using a splash bait, such as Eco-Naturalure.

• Prune back your grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness.

• It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits.

• Keep spraying your developing mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose.

Grants for community groups to help protect the environment The Queensland Government is inviting community groups across Queensland to apply for grants to develop innovative and educational projects that effectively engage the community on natural resource issues.

The next round of Natural Resources Awareness Grants has been announced by Natural Resources Minister Stephen Robertson to fund activities that strengthen community understanding of our water, land, biodiversity and catchments and to encourage people to become involved in sustainable management practices.

Mr Robertson said the Department of Environment and Resource Management was seeking innovative community ideas for new projects and activities that help to promote and celebrate the contribution of youth and volunteers in the natural resources sector.

Community groups across Queensland can apply for funding of up to $10,000 to highlight the value of the environment and the need to protect it.

"As we approach the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers, it is fitting that the theme for these grants is focused on volunteers," Mr Robertson said.

"The theme also acknowledges the United Nations declaration of August 2010 to August 2011 as the International Year of Youth."

"By including youth as an additional focus, these grants provide an ideal opportunity for organisations to involve the next generation of volunteers."

The Minister said Natural Resources Awareness Grants are offered to fund activities and projects that promote the importance of natural resources in our lives, while encouraging more Queenslanders to become involved in their protection.

Grants of up to $5,000 are available to groups such as Landcare and environmental groups, schools and volunteer groups, and up to $10,000 will be considered for projects where there is a genuine collaboration between two or more organisations.

Friday Night Tennis – Because we have had so many wet nights, the courts will be available on weekends from October 30 and also Monday to Thursday afternoons, up to the semi’s to play your catch-up matches. The first round of the 2010 Ladies Triples on Wednesday resulted in Kate White, Liz Little and Noelle Dean 18 defeating Marleen Bertram, Chris Freshwater and Millie Freshwater 17. Rhryllis Aitken, Rae Farrell and Di Hunt 28 defeated Margaret Lehmann, Anne Howard and Monika Duff 22. The social games had close results with Jim Osborne, John Aitken and John McSwain in the triples, and Colleen Ford, Dalija Wells and Di Garland both winning their games by one shot.

Business Bowls on Wednesday night was won

by The Targets with 88 points, and the runnersup were The Coachmen on 87 points. After two weeks of the series, the progress ladder now stands at ‘CMC’ and ‘The Coachmen’ both on six points, with ‘The Battlers’ close behind on five points.

In Round 1 of the 2010 Mixed Fours Competition on Thursday afternoon, Jan Lawson 28 defeated Graham Turton 11. In the social games Bob Bloomer and Brendan Edwards won the day with two wins plus 32. The runners-up, on a count back, with a score of 15 in the second game were Vivianne and Stan Corbett.

Friday Night Bowls was won by Margaret and Gary Lehmann on 203 points with Troy German (having his first game at the club) and Trevor

Bertram being runners-up on 190 points. The prize for the night ‘out of the hat’ was won by the Lehmanns who kindly donated it back for a jackpot.

More bowlers are needed if the night bowls are to continue. With the weather warming up, it is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours bowling under lights, in the cool of the evening. Book in at the club or phone Marleen or Trevor Bertram on 5438 7058.

On Sunday morning, the semi-final of the 2010 Men’s Triples was played, with Robbie Dean 20 d Bill Tumbridge 18, and Ross Siegle 32 d Rob Scullion 19. Congratulations to Phil Siggers, Steven Glover and Ross Siegle who went on in the afternoon to win the final 24 to 21 over Brendan Freshwater, Ernie Sherwood and Robbie Dean in a closely contested match.

Our discus champ does it again!

Local discus champ Milli Stuurop last week took out the state discus title again at QE2 stadium in Brisbane, with a huge throw of 42.56 metres.

This was even more impressive as she threw over 40 metres on four of her throws of her six attempts, the only girl to break the 40 metre mark. She was in the 14 years girls event of the 19 Years and Under State Track and Field Championship. She beat her arch rival Mia Cunningham by 4.74 metres, a remarkable achievement. This was not only a PB but just failed to match the State record by a tiny margin of 370mm. She wasn’t aware of the state record until she realised later that she had just missed out. From a coaches perspective she has responded well to some new methods we have been concentrating on lately. This year there is no national title for her age group so Milli will remain the Australian Champion for another year. She won the event which consisted of 20 throwers from all over Qld, also including local athlete Vicki Clark who placed 16th with a throw of 26.05 metres 44 |

We’re getting the team back together! Grab your mates and be part of it.

As I look back over the history of the Glasshouse Hinterland AFC (Aussie Rules Football Club), I find a club full of accolades including AFLSCJ ‘Club of the Year’ for two years. Being a great family club they need to have a place for the boys and fathers to play once they have finished Junior Football. So they are re-forming the Senior Team to play in the State Association Division 3 North competition, which this year was contested by Bribie Island, Gypmie, Nambour, Maroochy / NorthShore, Noosa and Pomona.

The club has come a long way since the days when the canteen was run from a little old caravan. Back in 2000 the Seniors took to the paddock for the first time with coach Chris Humphrey. In 2002 they were SEQ Div3 Grand Finalists with coach, Bob Hedges. Then in 2003 they played in the Wide Bay district. In 2004 they returned to Brisbane competition in the State Association Div2 with coaches Darren Giles, Scott Stephenson and Chris Humphreys from 2004 to 2006.

The Sunshine Coast Council has officially opened the Landsborough and District Community Centre at Tunnel-Ridge Road Landsborough, in which the cricket club, car club and football club share a new club room. Memorabilia and trophies from the clubs line the walls and it has a friendly atmosphere in which to relax after a game or training. The council have also provided the football club with a new storage shed named The Den, new change rooms and they have new goal posts fixed in place to have a kick all year round. When the oval is fully lit for night games it is very picturesque and has the feel of the Gabba or MCG. If you would like to be involved in the Seniors team for 2011 they will be meeting and taking registrations at the Landsborough Pub, on Sunday, October 31 for lunch on the deck from 12.00noon. Barbara De Ridder’s double gold Contributed by Barbara De Ridder

At the recent National Transplant Games in October, Barbara De Ridder, 57, from Mooloolah Valley bowled the competition over to win not one, but two gold medals in lawn bowls. She won gold in the pairs with Lorraine Chivers, and claimed gold in the singles, a feat she had been trying to repeat since previous wins in 2000 and 1988.

“It was really good that I finally made this. It was nice to get the two gold. Nice that both the things I entered I came out on top of,” Barbara said.

Barbara already has a large collection of medals won at previous World and National Transplant Games, but these Games, which were held in Canberra this year, will always be special.

“The whole thing was extra special because my kidney comes from Canberra,” Barbara said.

Barbara, who was born with only one kidney, had her transplant operation on March 14, 1979. She received her life-changing kidney donation from an 18-year-old after he died in a motorcycle accident.

“Even though I’ve been to Canberra before, it was the first time they have had the games there, so it’s the first time I’ve been back to compete. It was like I was taking my kidney home,” she said.

Knowing her donor came from Canberra made Barbara more determined win that singles Gold

medal.

“I said, ‘yeah I’m going to get it this time’.

Because it is getting expensive (to attend) this could be my last one and I thought if it’s going to be my last one I want to go out on a high.”

The Games included the opening ceremony at the Floriade, the Governor General officially opening the event, and a big thank you to all donors.

“We all weep, we all get very emotional over the donors. It’s really hard to explain how you feel at any time with a transplant.”

For Barbara, who has been playing lawn bowls since 1982, the games aren’t just a sporting event, but rather a celebration of still being here 31 years after her transplant.

“The medals are a bonus,” she said.

Pony Club’s second annual charity golf day The Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club Inc will host its second annual Charity Golf Day at the Beerwah Golf Club on Sunday, November 21, with the major beneficiary Riding for the Disabled, Sunshine Coast. The Golf Day will be run as a ‘4 Ball Ambrose’ so you certainly don’t have to be a good golfer to have a fabulous day, and there are lots of prizes up for grabs. The Club is seeking and will welcome all teams and sponsors for the 2010 event. Mixed Pairs Comp started with a win by Alex Thomson, Judy Walker and Lloyd Walker over Yorkie, Dick Metacalfe and Eileen Pierce.

Raffle winner was N. Littler.

Friday 3 bowl Pairs winners were Alex Thomson and Peter Plunkett, 2nd Ede Clark and Horst Jonscher, 3rd James and Frank.

Saturday was just a social game with 10 players in action. The Raffle was won by Lloyd Pooley.

Beegees season success It has been a great year for the girls of the Beegees Soccer club, with five female teams making it to the finals series, and four taking part in the grand finals. The women’s Reserve team finished as minor premiers and undefeated, only to lose the grand final in a penalty shootout.

The U16 girls finished second at the end of the season and were narrowly defeated in the grand final. The U12 division one team came second overall and lost by one goal in the semis in the last 20 seconds of the game.

The U14 girls division one finished second on the ladder and went to the grand final against the favourite, Maroochydore. It was the upset of the season with Beegees huge effort winning the grand final 2-1. Sammi Ledger did a fantastic job as goalkeeper and was awarded Man of the Match.

The U14 girls division two team had a fantastic year arriving at the end of the season undefeated with a tally of 93 goals for and one against (well

done goalkeeper Morgan and highest goal scorer on the coast Vanessa Coolwell!), and as minor premiers, the girls then went on to win the grand final against Maleny 2-0. Abbey scored the final goal from near the half way line to win her Man of the Match.
