Hi everyone Well you may have noticed that this week we have started the countdown for the number of GCNews editions there will be until Christmas.

While 10 weeks sounds like quite a while – we all know how quickly this time will pass, and as you all know our team takes their break over the Christmas period so we are all a little bit excited here in our office.

We are madly planning how we will be able to include all of the exciting Christmas Festivities planned for Glasshouse Country in the December editions.

So what would be great for us is if you are having Christmas event, and would like it included in the paper, let us know as soon as possible so it can be featured in the last few editions of the year.

This year we are also running the

Lighting Up Glasshouse Country Competition, there are more prizes than in the past and we hope to also encourage businesses to embrace the season and display ‘recycled’ decorated Christmas trees in their offices.

We are also encouraging people who will be lighting up but don’t actually want to be part of the judging to still be included on the list for public display.

Let’s face it, if you are going to all the trouble to ‘light up’ the house why not share it with the rest of the community – as it is the season to spread the joy.

Wild dog attack prompts safety warning When Louise and her husband left their house dog Benny, a bichon-cross maltese, on the verandah of their Fraser Road home for a few hours early one evening last week, they had absolutely no reason to fear for his safety.

When they returned home, however, they found their beloved family pet Benny dead, the victim of an unprovoked attack by wild dogs.

When rangers visited the home the next morning, they confirmed paw prints belonged to two larger dogs who gained access through an unfenced area at the rear of the property. Apparently, Benny never stood a chance.

Now Louise wants to share her traumatic experience with others in the hope of creating awareness of the potential danger posed by wild dogs in the area.

“We live in a suburban area surrounded by families, this could have happened to anyone, perhaps even a child or a toddler,” Louise said.

Louise, who has lived on Fraser Road for more than 10 years, said even though many locals are aware of the existence of wild dogs in the area, both Louise and her husband had never seen any.

Nor had she ever felt any concern for the safety of Benny, or, in years gone past, for her children, who used to run freely in the backyard.

Council’s pest and vector control coordinator Keith Salisbury said wild dogs are a declared pest and landholders are responsible for control on their property.

He said while there is good general awareness in the rural community about wild animals, some residents, particularly newer residents, may not be aware of the extent of the problem.

“Council facilitates a control program with community coordinators to place traps and baits on private land, but we rely on information from the public to help identify the location of wild dogs,” Mr Salisbury said.

He said residents are encouraged to report incidents and sightings on private and council controlled land, with this information used to help direct baiting and trapping programs.”

“Last year 936 wild animals in total were removed from the environment as a result of baiting and trapping. The majority of these animals were wild dogs. Council’s trapping contractor carried out six weeks of targeted trapping recently, and a follow up trapping program is planned for later this month through to the end of November.

“This week, officers are helping to coordinate a baiting program in the region where other landholders such as National Parks and forestry operators are participating,” he said.

Mr Salisbury said there were some simple measures landowners could take to reduce the risk posed by wild dogs, such as not leaving out pet food, covering compost and securing pets at night.

Landsborough's parking woes Strain is starting to show in Landsborough as the rail station’s car parking capacity is pushed to the limit, and local retailers are feeling the impact.

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said issues surrounding parking at the train station were becoming critical.

“Across the region more and more people are travelling to Brisbane via the train, putting pressure on the current car parking facility,” Mr McArdle said.

“It is important we plan for the future and there is a need to consider expanding the car parking surrounding the train station to allow for growth.”

Mr McArdle said he has asked the Transport Minister, Rachel Nolan, to have a member of her staff attend a meeting with him and members of the Landsborough Community Association at some time in the near future.

Landsborough Community Association president Ken Leitch said it was important to plan for the future.

“The overflow of the current car park into Cribb Street is impacting on local businesses whose customers are often unable to get a parking spot,” Ken said.

Ken said it made sense to provide additional car parking on railway land on the Caloundra side of the station, with most traffic arriving from the east.

We took to the streets to ask both locals and business owners what they thought about local parking issues, and got a mixed response.

I see a little lady from Qld Transport who makes sure that the buses go on time etc, and she assures me that there’s plenty of parking down the back down there, but people want quick access to the trains.

A month ago five or six people were parked in the main street – and you know they turn up at 6.30am, because the car is there all day.

In Mill Street next to the hotel, they were parking down there, and as business operators it’s disconcerting when our own customers can’t get access to our businesses. I believe the local Sergeant has identified the cars by marking tires and putting a note on saying it is a two hour parking zone and can you please move on. That seems to have fixed the situation here in Cribb street.”

Mark your calendar for Show day public holidays Sunshine Coast Council has agreed that the status quo should remain when it comes to the question of one show public holiday or three for the Sunshine Coast Region.

The discussion was prompted by the Minister for Industrial Relations annual call to council to provide dates for the annual Show Day holiday under the Holiday Act 1983.

Councillors have approved the three dates offered for the Show Day holidays for 2011 and also quashed any suggestion that the historic, and well loved ‘people’s’ days should be merged into one.

Not many people can say they have flown over Lake Eyre, in outback South Australia, on those rare occasions it’s been filled with floodwaters; even fewer people could say they saw this magnificent sight in a plane they built themselves. Yet our very own local veterinarian, Graeme Lean, from Landsborough did exactly that.

In between caring for sick and injured animals for local residents for the past 32 years, Graeme started building his Italian designed Falco F8L aircraft in 1991, a task he didn’t complete until 2008.

“It was one of the more complex planes to build, that’s probably why it took 17 years,” Graeme said.

That plus he could only work on it two to three evenings per week, sometimes less when life became busier.

“I had mixed feelings when I finished; great to have an aeroplane I could fly, but I enjoyed the building process and was sorry to see it come to an end,” he said.

Graeme admits flying a plane you’ve built yourself is different.

“During the test flight, you’re looking out either side making sure the wings are staying up, you’re checking oil pressure, oil flow, oil temperatures, everything. It landed like it was on rails, just beautiful.”

Graeme has had many flights since then including his recent Lake Eyre trip with friend Tony Giles.

“I wanted to see it because it was full of water,” Graeme said, “and Tony was keen and was talking about it.”

Graeme and his plane at Charleville The trip took three days, flying for approximately five hours per day. It included stops at Birdsville and Broken Hill, flights over the Flinders Ranges, seeing a flock of pelicans flying at 4,500 feet and flying low over the desert. But Graeme’s favourite part was the flight down the Diamantina River from south-west Queensland into South Australia and seeing Lake Eyre itself.

“Particularly the lake,” Graeme said, “all the magnificent colours; they were subtle colours, pinks and greys and blues and whites, to me that was really nice to see.

"The plane performed beautifully for the entire flight, only one minor problem, a bit of dirt got into the landing gear switch, but otherwise it performed very nicely.”

Graeme was bitten by the aviation bug at an early age. He originally wanted to be a fighter pilot, and was accepted into the Royal Air Force, but because of his upper leg length he couldn’t fit into the small fighter planes. About the same time he saw a veterinarian doing a post mortem on an animal and this lead to him becoming a veterinarian himself. He obtained his pilot’s license in 1975.

While he still flies regularly now Graeme’s hopes revisit Lake Eyre again with his wife, Marilyn, next year.

Coral’s next quest

This time last year the only quest that would have been on Coral Manson’s mind would have been trying to get well. At GCNews we have followed Coral’s story of how she was struck down by illness which left her in a wheelchair.

During that time the community rallied and showed their support and now that Coral is well again, she is repaying all that support by entering the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest.

The Quest, which first started in 1969, is open to women 18 years and over and raises money for the Lions Medical Research Foundation.

Coral, 18, who is sponsored by the Beerwah Lions Club, started the Quest a couple of months ago.

“I wanted to do it because I like to help people out. Currently we’re doing raffles and we are trying to organise something for the Blind Cricket day later this month. I hope to raise as much money as I can and help with the medical research.”

Compared to this time last year Coral is a picture of health.

“I have a little bit of weakness in my leg but that’s about it. I feel pretty good. It’s awesome.

I actually thought I’d never walk again.”

Coral finds it hard to put into words how that feels.

“I’m just happy that I’ve got my leg back, it’s just total happiness,” she said.

Coral is looking forward to what the rest of the quest will bring. Entrants will be judged at regional finals before attending the grand final where two entrants become the personality winner and charity winner.

In 2008 / 2009, the quest raised over $282,000.00 for medical research. If you are female and aged 18 years or older and interested in raising funds for medical research and having a fun filled year, contact your local Lions Club for sponsorship or the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest/Foundation office for further information.

Colourful clowning duo Peebo and Dagwood entertained hundreds of children at Aussie World recently during the release of their new kids DVD, Clown Town.

The pair, joined by their dog Morris and chimpanzee Hamilton, posed for photos with children enjoying the last few days of the school holidays.

They toured around Aussie World, handing out high fives and red clown noses to kids and adults alike.

Peebo and Dagwood will be making a special appearance at this year’s Glass House Country Community Carols, to be held on Saturday, December 18 starting at 5.30pm at Beerwah Sports Ground, Roberts Road. Other entertainment will include JFive, The Church on the Rise band and Glass House Baptist church band, who will be performing a variety of popular carols, while the combined Glass House choir will be singing as well. There will be a few market stalls, a barbeque cooked

by Rotary, dip n’ dots and a coffee van, and the night will end with fireworks sponsored

A win, win situation

Coochin Creek Co-op were thrilled to find out recently that they were the Queensland winners of Shell’s Australia-wide Charity Drive Competition.

But the big winners were their nominated charity, the Coochin Creek Rural Fire Brigade, who will benefit from the $5,000 prize.

Tina Wilson from Coochin Creek Co-op and Manager of Shell Service Station at Beerwah, explains. “Shell ran a competition in 230 independent Shell Service sites in Australia. Customers had to purchase $25.00 or more in fuel or Shell products to participate".

Tina said they decided to support the firies because everybody needs them.

“They are the first ones we’re going to call if there is a problem of any kind coming up to the summer fire season. Rural firies will always be one of the first ones there to help out. They were over the moon when we explained what we would be doing.”

The Co-op was allocated a certain amount of cards and due to unprecedented support they ran out. “It was going word of mouth through the community. We saw so many new, fresh faces. We were even getting back-packers coming in. If people bought $21.00 worth, they would squeeze it to make it $25.00. The people really wanted to get in behind us. It was great. I think it’s awesome that a small country town can show them what people can do when they get together.

“We’re just ecstatic. It’s a really great feeling knowing that you’ve done something really good for the community and that the community has gotten behind you and has the same interest. "I’d like to thank the community for supporting such an important charity,” she said.

We travelled from: Our homes in Beerwah and Brisbane to various destinations by either car or plane.

It cost: Varying expenses depending on time taken, distances travelled, and method of travelling.

Best bit: Every part of this type of travelling is great. We found it is a fantastic way to see our beautiful country. Happening across 'Big Things' that you didn’t know existed is most exciting.

Shopping: Each town has its interesting and unique shops, particularly small country towns with homemade goodies, and big welcoming smiles and a chat. We particularly love visiting information centres, to browse through souvenirs unique to that town or area.

If you’re on a budget: Driving your own car, taking your own food and drinks and staying in caravan parks is the most inexpensive method.

We are about to embark on a long trip for the first time with a Spaceship Campervan, drastically saving on accommodation and meals costs.

Our top tip: Research and plan your route and activities, including as much as you can in a certain area. Utilise internet trip planning sites and information centres. Include other activities other than just Big Things, and most of all have heaps of fun.

My best friend Tracey and I have always loved road trips. Looking for somewhere new and

different to travel we were inspired by the old Telstra advertisement on television with the man and his son embarking on a trip around Australia visiting various Big Things e.g. The Big Ram, Big Lobster, Big Pineapple etc, to the music of 'I’ve been everywhere man’'. After many excited discussions we decide to complete a ‘Big Things’ icon tour around Australia.

We set out on August 15, 2009 from Beerwah.

First, we needed a mascot, to accompany us on all of our tours and to be in all the photos with us, so we found a white teddy bear that once belonged to Tracey, and named him ‘Ted’.

As we both work full time, and have been embarking on each ‘Big Things’ trip on long weekends and annual leave, it has taken careful planning to ensure that we allowed enough travelling and sightseeing time with each trip.

We found at least 150 Big Things and counting, around Australia. Trawling websites, limited Big Things books, information centres and with the help of friends and family, we have found that there is not a great deal of information on where our Big Things are, or details about them. With the help of Tourism Port Douglas we are planning on creating a book of our own which will detail some information about the Big Things - facts and figures, and addresses on where to find them.

Trish, Tracey and Ted at Coffs Harbour's Big Banana We are also keen on using our mascot Ted, as a unique feature. As he is in nearly every photo that we take, sometimes inconspicuously, we want to incorporate a ‘Where’s Ted’ theme to our book.

To date, we have visited 60 Big Things covering areas such as the Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the northern rivers area of New South Wales, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth and Port Macquarie. We have a Bundaberg weekend planned next and a very ambitious Brisbane to Port Douglas via Longreach and Winton drive for our next holidays. We have found some exciting and very impressive Big Things, but we have also come across some that just do not make the cut. We also try to include other activities in our trips such as snorkelling, sightseeing tours etc, just to make sure our trips aren't monotonous.

I think there is no better way to see our beautiful country, with the wind in your hair, your best friend next to you, and the open road ahead.

Storm season is approaching are you surge protected?

When the summer storms hit, they bring with them continual power surges that can damage electrical devices in your home including TV’s, fridges, computers and modems.

Your computers, modems and phones can be particularly sensitive to a surge of electricity and can easily be damaged if not surge protected.

After lightening, a big storm or blackout you may find that: • Your computer won't turn on anymore.

• Your modem stops working.

• Your modem and internet still work but are suddenly very slow for no apparent reason.

All of these can be symptoms of a power surge that has come through your home or office.

These symptoms can be prevented with surge protectors. The thing about PDFs These days, just about everyone’s using the PDF file type for their published documents, particularly those that will be downloadable from a website, or emailed out.

PDF stands for “Portable Document Format” and saving your document in this format means that: a) all pages, including text and images, are captured within the one file b) your document is generally very small in filesize, making it quick and easy to email or download c) your document is relatively difficult to change once published d) your document can be read by anyone, for free, without the need for special software e) if you’re clever about how you put together your PDF, the content can look great when printed at any size.

Adobe Systems, the creators, were very clever in the way that they released this unique file, distributing the free Acrobat PDF Reader software globally, then forcing businesses to purchase the software to create it.

The good news is that the PDF file type was released as an open standard in 2008, meaning other software vendors can now provide PDF creation within their own products.

Saving as the PDF file type has now become a standard option throughout the Microsoft Office product suite (2007 and later). For example, to save as PDF from Microsoft Word, move your mouse cursor over the “Save As” option in the main menu, then select “PDF or XPS” from the submenu that appears. Can’t find this option?

You may need to download the free “Save to PDF and XPS” add-in from www.microsoft.com Although we are now able to create PDF files, there is still no effective way to edit PDF files without purchasing Adobe Acrobat editing software.

From open space to transport – have a say in your future The Sunshine Coast community’s next opportunity to help shape the future of the region is here, with eight direction setting documents on topics ranging from transport to open space now available for public comment during the next phase of Our Place Our Future.

Council’s vision is for the Sunshine Coast to become Australia’s most sustainable region—vibrant, green, diverse—and council is progressively releasing a series of strategies, plans, discussion papers and background studies to work towards this.

Statutory and Regional Planning Portfolio councillor Russell Green said the Our Place Our Future campaign is about council partnering with the community to plan for the future of the Sunshine Coast region.

“Late last year, the Coast community had their say on a series of discussion papers and strategies that will help shape the future of the Sunshine Coast by informing the new planning scheme and a whole range of other strategic policy documents,” Cr Green said.

“One year on, council has used the feedback to bring these and other documents one step closer to fruition.

“But before we are able to do this, we are going back to the community. This is really your opportunity to confirm council’s strategic direction on a range of important subjects—from sport, open space, energy transition, transport and more.”

Submission close at 4.00pm on Monday, November 8, so get in now and have your say on the following draft strategies and plans: • Sustainable Transport—works towards delivering efficient, integrated transport networks to reduce the Coast’s reliance on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

• Waterways and Coastal Management—provides a framework for managing the region’s natural waterways (rivers, creeks, wetlands, lakes), constructed water bodies (artificial channels and lakes) and coastal foreshores (beaches, dunes, river mouths).

• Energy Transition—part of council’s plan to reduce the Sunshine Coast’s need for carbon intensive electricity and oil based fuels to help create a future resilient to climate change.

• Open Space—ensuring the community’s need for recreation parks, sports grounds, recreation trails are planned for into the future.

• Social Infrastructure—ensuring the council owned and managed community, cultural and learning facilities (such as halls, libraries, museums and cemeteries) meet the needs of future generations.

• Sport and Active Recreation—guides the current and future provision of sport and active recreation facilities and services (i.e. playing grounds for football, cricket, equestrian, tennis) to meet the needs of the Sunshine Coast’s diverse communities over the next 15 years.

• Aquatic—a strategy to guide the planning, development and management of the aquatics facilities across the Coast for the next 15 years.

Last month, local turf company Wild Horse Turf hosted a field day to exhibit its new acquisition, the Soil Hydration System. The day was held at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club, where the top field has been treated with the water crystal and fertiliser mix.

The day, which was well attended by local councils, businesses and industry representatives, included a machine demonstration, and test plots to show the water crystal at work.

The Soil Hydration System inserts water crystals and fertiliser underneath existing grass – making it the perfect treatment for school ovals, sports fields and parks. The results last three years, and can halve irrigation needs. For unirrigated fields, the water crystal can catch 500 times its own weight in water – holding onto it until the plants need it in drier times.

Wild Horse Turf’s Dean Smyth said that an additional benefit from the system was reduced leaching of fertiliser.

“A cost saving in the order of 15 – 30 per cent on fertiliser has been observed in treated areas,” he said.

President John extended a warm welcome to members at the September meeting. The weather was a bit windy and members enjoyed the calls from the abundant birdlife.

Much of the meeting was taken up with finalising the Spring Flower Show.

The Christmas breakup will be held on Tuesday, November 30 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Members are reminded that payment for Christmas lunch to be paid at the October meeting, $21.00 for members and $28.00 for Colin and Ann Parker in their garden non-members.

Results of the competition bench for August, first Kath Howitt, second Joan Kropp. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 21, 9.30am in the garden of Graham and Una Riddel, 121 Morrisons Road, Peachester.

On October 6, the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains completed a project to lay a concrete slab at the Landsborough Girl Guides camping facility in Gympie Street South for the erection of a shed.

The concrete for this slab was very generously donated by Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd who has a concrete plant in Beerwah. The delivery of the concrete was carried out at the time they had stated and was done in a very professional and helpful manner. Thank you, Ron. Rotary and the Landsborough Girl Guides Committee thank Holcim for supporting this local community project.

The Sunshine Statesmen Barbershop Chorus now has 40 members and is aiming for a total of 50 by early 2011 in readiness for the Biennial National Convention in Brisbane.

According to Chorus President, Tony Eccles, you don’t have to be able to read music to sing barbershop. “‘A fella with some singing experience or natural ability could join now and be singing with us in time for our Australia Day performance in Buderim in January – so why wait?”

Unfortunately, Shirley was in hospital, and so was unable to be present.

Letters to the Editor Door Locks

It is said that until man had possessions he had no need for locks. In fact the earliest form of locks may have been as simple as a large stone rolled across the mouth of a cave to keep out intruders.

We believe that the Egyptians made locks of wood some 4,000 years ago but early locks manufactured in Britain were greatly improved when made by blacksmiths. As the blacksmiths evolved into specialised locksmiths their work became progressively more intricate.

The skill of locksmiths was continually challenged by thieves with increasing degrees of cunning. The locksmith needed to stay one step ahead. In 1830, James Carpenter with inventor John Young designed the famous perpendicular action rim lock for doors. The patent was divided into rim lock use and mortice lock use, with Carpenter naming his rim lock ‘Number 60’.

Carpenter’s business thrived and, upon his death in 1844, the firm transferred to his son-in-law James Tildesley who traded from 1851 under the name Carpenter & Tildesley with James’ son John. The company finally ceased trading around 1919.

Advertisements for ‘Carpenter’s Patent Rim Locks No.60’ appeared in Australia in the late 1800s.

Several of the door locks at Bankfoot House bear the plate ‘No.60 Jas Carpenter Patentee’ and although we can’t be sure of their exact age, 100 years is very likely. Guess what? They still work! Family descendent, Ethel Burgess, is fairly confident the verandah doors and locks were ‘recycled’ from the original 1868 house.

Beerwah streetscape

It has been a couple of months since I wrote regarding my disappointment in the appearance of Beerwah, driving over its wonderful new overpass. Surprisingly nothing has been done. No mowing, no tidying, no weeding or clearing up whatsoever, the weeds and rubbish have just got bigger and thicker.

I wrote to Council as well as Main Roads and they blame each other for the neglect, but to no avail. Apparently now that Beerwah has its new roads there is no money left to maintain its streetscape.

So residents, what do we have to do? Get out and mow it ourselves? It is certainly looking that way.

We need a task force of concerned and caring residents, business owners etc to help get behind this situation and change it. Why is Beerwah the ‘Forgotten Town’? We pay a lot to our so called councils and what are we getting in return? Not good enough Council, not good enough Main Roads. Beerwah deserves better!

There is something fishy going on at Ewen Maddock Dam, but don’t panic, it’s all good news for anglers according to the president of the new Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc, David Brace.

“Basically there’s a lot of interest from local freshwater anglers, and knowing that the dam hadn’t been stocked for 10 years, we just decided to form a group to try and restock the dam,” he said.

The group, which works closely with SEQ Water and DPI and Fisheries, aims to achieve many things. “We’ve got a five year management plan created with the assistance of DPI and Fisheries. We aim to have a sustainable fishery. We won’t be stocking the maximum amount of fish we’re allowed but we’re hoping to each year put in roughly 25,000 fish fingerlings. A lot of fish go over the dam wall when it floods, so it really needs to be replenished all the time.”

Dave said there are some noxious species in the dam, such as Tilapia, that they would like to see eradicated, and that by restocking native fish the native fish will eat the noxious ones.

“We want to turn it into a fishery where not only locals but people from interstate can come and fish at a fresh water fishery on the coast. A lot of people don’t even know you can fish here.”

There are currently 30 members in the group from 19 to 60, both men and women, and new members are welcome, including juniors.

“Being a member entails coming to meetings and getting involved in fundraising, it’s also a social club too. Later this month, on October 30, we’re all meeting at Borumba Dam and having a meet and greet for all the families.

You don’t have to be a mad keen fisherman to join.”

Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month, commencing 7.00pm at the Mooloolah Country Club.

The group is applying for grants but they are also looking for sponsorship from businesses.

“Sponsorship is the biggest thing that we really need at the moment, because without local small businesses contributing, it (our goals) just won’t happen.

Each fingerling, depending on the species is .30 to .70 cents each.”

Currently in the dam are Mary River Cod, Golden Perch, Australian Bass and Saratoga, and the group hopes to also stock Silver Perch as well in the future.

Dave said the group is promoting catch and release, however anglers will definitely have to abide by the Fisheries limit and take rules.

There’s no propeller type vessels, it’s all paddle or land based angling, and any live bait used has to be native to the dam. No license is required at present to fish at the dam.

Disabled parking

Parking upgrade a must at busy Landsborough station

A new disability parking scheme is being introduced Australia-wide, as a result of consultation with disability permit holders and other stakeholders, and the federal, state and local governments.

The result of this process is the Australian Disability Parking Scheme, a streamlined system that includes a new universal permit that is recognised in every state of Australia. The new system is also designed to allow eligible people to park closer to their destination.

The first phase of the new scheme is to replace existing Queensland blue permits with the new national permits (ADPP). The mail-out of new permits to current disability parking permit holders in Queensland started on September 20 and was due to finish on October 5, 2010. Existing holders of red permits who continue to meet the eligibility criteria will retain their existing parking entitlements.

The new permits include extra security and safety features, including micro-printing and holographic foil security features. Further information is available at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/disabilityparking or by phoning the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 13 23 80.

Centaur service It was encouraging to see many members of the Centaur families able to attend a memorial service held recently at the site where the hospital ship was sunk in 1943.

The Centaur was missing for decades until it was located late last year, about 50 kilometres east of Moreton Island at a depth of around 2,000 metres, after a search that was sparked by media releases issued by me, which was followed by a media campaign that led to state and federal funding being allocated for the search.

Around 300 members of the Centaur family attended the service, on board the HMAS Kanimbla.

I am pleased that they were able to spend some special time at the site to remember their many loved ones who were impacted by this tragic event.

PARKING at the Landsborough railway station is becoming critical as the population of our region grows.

More and more people are travelling to Brisbane by rail, putting pressure on the current car parking at the station.

It is important that we plan for the future and there is a definite need to consider expanding the car parking surrounding the Landsborough train station to allow for growth.

I have asked the Transport Minister Rachael Nolan to have a member of her staff attend a meeting with myself and members of the Landsborough Community Association. Hopefully this meeting will take place in the near future.

Association president Ken Leitch agrees it is important that we plan for the future as cars are now banking up around the area outside the designated station car park.

It was during school holidays when association members and I visited the station and every car parking space had been taken. We definitely need to look at improving the position.

The overflow of the current car park into Cribb Street is impacting on local businesses whose customers are often unable to get a parking spot.

As most of the buses (as well as a good percentage of cars) arrive from the east, it makes sense to build the additional car parking on railway land on the Caloundra side of the station.

Association vice president George Gatti tells me that that currently all existing parking spaces are occupied by commuters using the 7.30am train to the city so that passengers travelling on later trains are forced to park outside QR confines.

If the State Government does not act now we will find ourselves landlocked in the future.

I recently reminded residents about the fabulous Council Cab service. Since then my office has received a number of enquiries about when this service will be extended to include Beerburrum.

At the moment, the Council Cab program is still in its trial period, and does not operate in all areas of the Sunshine Coast. However, a review of the program is currently underway and will be completed in December 2010.

Council has received a large number of suggestions for improvement to the program including extensions into other areas such as Beerburrum.

If residents have any questions or suggestions in relation to this service, I encourage you to email councilcabs@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to ensure your queries are attended to properly and are included in the program review. In case you missed the details of this service, Council Cabs is an affordable transport service for people aged 60 and over; people with a disability, including people with a mobility impairment (DSP concession card holders); and carers and minors of eligible people accompanying them (carers card or companion card holders). If you are eligible for this service, Council Cabs will collect you from your home in the morning and drive you to your local shopping centre. If you book a return trip you will be picked up about lunch time at the same place you were dropped off and returned to your home address. To book a Council Cab, call 1300 139 433 by 12.30pm the day before. Telephone operators are available 24 hours a day. Cost is $2.00 per person, one way.

Sunshine Coast Council officers will be giving away free trees around 9.00am at the Mooloolah Valley and District Family Fun Day on Sunday, October 17. They will include: Callistemon’s, Grevilleas, Melaluca, Lilly Pillys, Gum Trees and ground covers. All are welcome and I would love to see you visit the stall while you are enjoying the many entertainments arranged for the day. I believe there will be live bands, dancing and cheerleading demonstrations, market stalls, a puppet show and lots more.

Rural Roads Maintenance

The beginning of the wet season has impacted on the condition of local roads increasing in the number of calls and complaints, particularly from residents in rural areas. I have personally driven a number of these roads of late and spoken with the senior engineers and foreman on the level of maintenance both I and my community expect, and have now invited engineering staff to join me on a tour of the roads most impacted. This is particularly important as council starts its 2011/2012 budget discussions in November. If maintenance of rural roads needs more funding to maintain them at an acceptable level, I will ensure further funding is allocated in the budget to be adopted in June 2011.

New funding to assist community groups with water bills

Council will roll out a Water and Sewerage Funding Program to help eligible not-for-profit community organisations to both pay their water bills and become more water efficient. You may recall that I touched on this recently, but at the time it was under consideration. I am happy to announce that it is now going ahead. The new funding program will be offered in two rounds this financial year and tied to the two Unitywater billing periods. Applications for the first billing period can only be lodged in round one, which closes Friday, November 19, 2010. Applications for the second billing period can only be lodged in round two, which opens Tuesday, February 1, 2011 and closes Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

To make an application and to view guidelines, eligibility criteria and information about developing Water Efficiency Management Plans, visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au When applying for this program, organisations will need to provide supporting documentation, including a copy of a Unitywater account detailing current water and sewerage charges (July 2010); a copy of Sunshine Coast Council water rates notice from a previous like billing period (July 2009), and evidence of not-for-profit status. This is good news, however clubs with pokie-machines will not be eligible until next year when Council policy is reviewed. Groups will be able to apply for the difference from the account of last year compared to this year. Noting, some clubs will actually not be eligible if the water bill is less than last years. Curves Beerwah joins nationwide fundraising campaign for breast cancer Curves of Beerwah is joining Curves clubs throughout Australia to help raise funds for vital breast cancer research programs during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Linda, of Curves Beerwah, said the club will waive its standard fee of $249.00 for any woman who shows proof of a recent mammogram or makes a donation to a Breast Cancer Organisation.

Curves clubs have been fundraising in Australia for Cancer Council Australia for the past four years and to date, have raised more than $925,000 to fund cancer research and educational programs in Australia.

This year, Curves’ clubs across Australia are striving to meet the goal of $1.2 million through a series of events and initiatives throughout the month of October, including hosting ‘Girls’ Night In’ parties.

Pony Club to host second annual charity golf day The Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club Inc will host its second annual Charity Golf Day at the Beerwah Golf Club on Sunday, November 21, with the major beneficiary Riding for the Disabled, Sunshine Coast.

Riding for the Disabled’s primary objective is to provide most people who have a disability with the opportunity to ride and enjoy all the activities connected with horse riding. For people with disabilities, horse riding is both therapeutic and recreational. RDA is one of the few organisations that cater for people of all ages with a very wide range of disabilities.

The Golf Day will be run as a ‘4 Ball Ambrose’ so you certainly don’t have to be a good golfer to have a fabulous day. There are lots of prizes up for grabs.

The Club is seeking and will welcome all teams and sponsors for the 2010 event. Steaming ahead with nostalgia The Sunshine Coast Hinterland will come alive with the sound of steam and the C 17 CLASS Steam locomotive 974 and the 1910 built heritage carriages steaming through the forests and fields next month.

Stan Griffiths Glasshouse Catholic Community Most Australians be they religious or not, have heard of Mary Mackillop. Not only was she a person of great faith and belief in God and the Catholic Church but she was a Great Australian by any estimation. Her contribution to Australian society, particularly in the area of education, was immense. She and the Sisters of St Joseph were instrumental in providing an education to young Australians who had little or no access to schooling prior to her arrival. This was particularly so in the remote rural towns and settlements that dotted much of the country in the latter 19th century. Often she and her sisters went to places that had no access to a school, even one provided by the state. They were particularly concerned in educating the poor.

Their only means of sustenance was provided by the people of the area and they often went hungry as the people had little to share. Their life was lonely and arduous as they laboured with their charges with little in the way of teaching aids other than their desire to impart knowledge.

Of course at the centre of this desire to educate the children was a burning desire to impart a deep faith in God in the lives of the children.

This was a primary goal in Mary’s dream as she believed that belief in God was an affair both of the mind and the heart. The emphasis on prayer and hymns was infused into the curriculum, so

much so that one of the early criticisms levelled at the Sisters was that they spent too much time on religion and too little on teaching the three R’s. Be that as it may, Mary was able to infuse a deep generosity of spirit in her Sisters and her work bore fruit, and countless thousands of Australians have been the beneficiaries of their efforts.

Mary Mackillop has had a significant influence in the Christian Churches in the Glass House Mountains area, particularly in the Catholic and Anglican communities. Several years ago when these two communities were seeking a place of worship they got together and built a place of worship that services both congregations.

When deciding to whom they would dedicate the building the people decided to name the church in honour of Mary Mackillop.

As Mary will be canonised on Sunday, October 17 the communities have decided to make this a festival day in honour of Australia’s first officially recognised saint. The day commences at 11.00am with a joint ecumenical service followed by a light lunch and an Australiana concert. Proceedings will conclude with afternoon tea at 3.00pm. The joint communities invite our fellow Glasshouse Country residents to join them on the occasion as a tribute to this great Australian woman.

Finding yourself labelled a ‘non-conforming borrower’ isn’t the end of your search for a home loan. The first thing to do is accept that you are not alone, anywhere between 15 and 20 per cent of Australians have difficulty getting a home loan.

The fact is that not everyone has a sound financial record; perfect credit history or a large cash deposit at their

disposal, or you may simply not fit into the standard mould set by banks.

Being self-employed, aged over 55, a recent immigrant to the country or working on a contract or seasonal basis can also be perceived as problematic by many mainstream lenders.

‘Regular lenders have very conservative requirements,’ says Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison. Regular lenders will often be unprepared to go out on a limb because of the automated loan approval process often used to provide an overall credit-scoring system. If a credit check

reveals bankruptcy or some similar credit problem, the automated system may deny the loan application outright.

There are lenders that have stepped in to assist the ‘nonconforming borrower’ with a range of products.

In industry terms, ‘nonconforming’ simply means that a loan does not conform to standard lending requirements.

Honesty, says Teresa, is the best policy when approaching any lender. ‘Full disclosure is essential for non-conforming borrowers,’ she explains.

‘If someone has had some difficulty in the past, it is

much better to explain to the lender what has happened than to have that lender come across a bad credit history that would immediately arouse suspicion.’

Battle lines breached I was beaten to my cauliflowers! I was only distracted for maybe a week or two, and in they came, an army of them, silently devouring my family’s dinner. Many of you may have guessed that I am talking about the babies of the distinctive White Cabbage Butterfly.

Every year, just as it starts to warm up, I normally see a couple of these butterflies as they begin to visit my veggie patch and I spring into action with my trusty Dipel and the dinner is saved. However, this time around, I missed the all important sighting of the first flutter of white wings and lost the battle before realising it had begun. Now I mourn the loss of one last meal of cauliflower with cheese sauce until next year.

Yet another unwelcome visitor to the garden at the moment is the 28 Spotted Lady Beetle. It is the only lady beetle that rapidly devours leaves before your very eyes. Seriously! Next time you spot one, watch it at work and they will no longer look so cute.

Unlike its counterparts who feast on aphids and other nasties, the 28 Spotted Lady Beetle is a little larger and more of an orange colour, and yes, if you count, it has 26 - 28 black spots on its back. I remember my first plague of the little terrors; I was so proud that I had such a healthy number of what I thought to be beneficial insects…my potato leaves however, didn’t reflect the same healthy glow unfortunately.

Knowing that Spring does generally bring these pests, I will be adding fortnightly spraying with Dipel to my list of chores to rid my garden of the hungry caterpillars …and adding catching butterflies and beetles to the kids outdoor games. With three kids, and a bit of competition to see who can catch the most beetles and butterflies, my pest problem should be rapidly reduced.

Despite the influx of pests, it is not all doom and gloom. I am still harvesting a healthy batch of carrot, beans, beetroot, peas, choko and silverbeet.

Furthermore, my corn and asparagus are rapidly growing before my very eyes with the warmer weather.

Over the next month I will be continuing my succession planting of carrots and lettuce, whilst on the maintenance front, I will be continuing the battle with pests, weeds and regular watering. I hope everyone gets to enjoy the glorious weather outside in the garden this month. Until next time in ‘Get Up and Grow’…

Rosemary's plant of the month ‘Perfume Tree’ or ‘Ylang-Ylang’ Cananga odorata

A rare rainforest tree – usually small when grown in garden situations. Fast growing and not tolerant of frost. Sets heavily perfumed flowers in Summer that dangle down from horizontal branches. The flowers are used in the manufacture of YlangYlang perfume. It produces black aromatic fruits, which are a favourite of fruit pigeons. Very attractive tree for all types of gardens.

Vic Potter spent his life in South East Queensland. He was born in Wondai and there he met Peggy, his wife of 58 years.

His life was spent working on the land and he tried his hand at many things – dairy, sugar cane, fruit and vegetables, pineapples, ginger, avocadoes and macadamia nuts. Vic and Peg had seven children and the family has grown to include several great-grandchildren. Vic enjoyed sport and played cricket, tennis and golf, winning 3 golf trophies before ill health forced him to retire. Vic was always involved in community affairs including the rural fire brigade, school P&C, Hall committee and was known, and answered to many different names – Vic, Dad, Grand-dad, was a highly respected member of the local community. He was Grandman, Papa Bear and Magoo. His eighty years on this earth were all too short and he is greatly missed by us all.

Moving into or out of the area?

If you’re a new resident to the Glasshouse Country area we’d like to welcome you into our communities.

Recycling, waste avoidance and waste management is an important part of what we do in our communities.

Your local Resource Recovery Centre is located in Beerwah at the junction of Roberts Road and Peachester Road.

The centre takes all your cardboard and paper, any unwanted items from the kitchen, lounge room, bedroom etc, we also take clothing and unwanted electric goods working or not.

If you’re moving, don’t throw it, show it to the staff at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre.

Even your old tools, steel, fencing, old pumps, machinery and shed items are recycled, you’ll be amazed at what is recycled and how those items are given another identity!

Christmas is coming, don’t purchase new decorations for the tree, make your own.

Have the children put a small item they love on the tree then use the old cards (Birthday, Christmas etc) and write on the blank side.

You can use funny sayings, friendship quotes, things you love about each family member / friend, the smile on your face and the rush of memories when you read and look at your very own unique Christmas tree.

There are lots of different ways to decorate your tree; remembering someone you love, items from previous holidays, old school photos (don’t forget to use mums and dads photos also).

We’re going to make a recycled tree with items that have been thrown out and have it displayed at the centre, you’ll be amazed at what we’re going to use! Remember to come and take a look for yourself.

We have a few Christmas trees at the centre for community groups if you would like to make it a class or organisation activity and display it in your facility. Also if you are a local business and would like get into the Christmas spirit why not ask for a recycled Christmas tree to be displayed at work? Please don’t hesitate to contact us. Get in quickly. These Christmas trees will look very unique.

If you’re decorating your home with Christmas lights why not decorate a small tree also?

Help is was available for Queensland homeowners who may be having difficulty meeting mortgage repayments.

Community Services Minister Karen Struthers said Queenslanders had access to a raft of programs to help them meet essential expenses.

She said under the Mortgage Relief Scheme, the Department of Communities is able to grant loans of up to $12,000 for Queenslanders who are experiencing tough times due to unemployment, accident or illness.

No repayments are required in the first year and recipients have 10 years to pay back the loan.

The Minister said the interest-free loans helped 29 Queensland households last financial year, as well as helping 3,400 Queenslanders keep electricity connected during the last financial year under the Home Energy Assistance Scheme.

"In the first two months of this financial year, we have already helped 750 households keep electricity connected with more than $380,000 worth of grants," Ms Struthers said.

Coast residents urged to ‘blow the whistle’ on government waste

The LNP Waste Watch Committee will hold its first public hearing in the Sunshine Coast on October 20 and locals have been urged to join the fight against Government Waste.

Local LNP MPs Fiona Simpson and Andrew Powell asked the Committee to conduct a hearing locally because Coast residents are facing high cost of living pressures fed by wasteful Government policies and they wanted locals to have a say.

The public hearing will be at the CWA Hall Nambour at 10.00am on October 20. Residents with confidential matters can also arrange for a private meeting.

“The LNP Waste Watch was set up because of the astonishing levels of Government waste that led to the loss of Queensland's AAA credit rating, a record $83.5 billion debt, increased charges and taxes, and a fire sale of public assets,” Chairman Scott Emerson MP said.

“Our site www.stoplaborwaste.com and our hearings give Queenslanders an opportunity to tip us off about waste. We urge people to participate and together we can reduce the debt, restore the AAA rating and rebuild a respect for taxpayers’ hard earned dollars,” he said.

Shadow Minister for Transport and Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said that Sunshine Coast residents were sick of wearing the brunt of increased charges and costs of living because of State Government mismanagement.

“The LNP Waste Watch committee gives locals a way to participate in the fight against waste and to help get Queensland’s books back in order,” Fiona Simpson said.

Andrew Powell, who is also a member of the Waste Watch Committee, said that every Queenslander could play a role in fighting wasteful expenditure and reducing the record $83.5 billion debt.

“People are sick of the waste they are seeing, but because the Government isn’t listening they feel helpless at the billions of dollars in waste they see going down the drain.”

Ladies’ Day last Wednesday had six teams of men and ladies which resulted in wins for Dennis Hume and Gary Lehmann in the pairs and in the triples, Dalija Wells, Joseph Albrecht and Di Hunt and also Ruth Ellery, Gaye Rohweder and Rae Farrell had wins.

Wednesday night saw the start of our six-week Business Bowls Competition. After an enjoyable sausage sizzle at 6.00pm, the eight teams who had entered played 15 ends of ‘fours’ finishing at 9.00pm. Winners of the first night were the ‘CMC’ team from the Beerwah RSL and Citizens Memorial Club, on 97 points with the runners-up being ‘The Coachmen’, from Glasshouse Country Coaches, on 92 points. For the first night the winners were drawn ‘out of the hat’ and they were, Adam, Tina, Dennis and Sharon from the ‘D and S’ team. The handicapper has sorted out the teams for next week when ‘the real’ competition begins. Handicaps are calculated on last week’s performance, and the opposition drawn for this week’s game. The overall winner of the series will be determined on the points scored for the entire competition.

Millie Freshwater and Jim Tatum won Thursday’s Open Pairs with 2 wins plus 21 points. The runners-up prize went to Clive Sinton and Peter Leggett with a margin of plus 4 in the second game.

Last Friday’s ‘Night Bowls’ was cancelled due to rain, as was the semi-final of the 2010 Men’s Triples Club Competition scheduled for Saturday and again on Sunday, both days also being washed out. One of the semi-finals of the Men’s Triples is now planned to be played on Wednesday night, weather permitting, with the other semi to be completed before the Final, now re-scheduled for Sunday, October 24 at 1.00pm.

This weekend will see 14 teams, from home and away, competing in our Glasshouse Country two day Carnival. The ‘Mixed Fours’ event comprises three games of 15 ends on Saturday followed by a barbecue and then two games of 15 ends on Sunday. There is $1,000.00 in prize money to be shared by the overall Carnival winners and place getters, daily winners, and also an ‘out of the hat’ team. All prizes will be awarded at the presentation on the close of the competition on Sunday afternoon.

Tuesday, October 5 was a Social games of bowls with the raffle won by Netty Cook.

Friday 3 bowl Pairs was won by Lloyd and Judy Walker, 2nd D. Black and J. Esdaile (the pink tulle again), and 3rd Rhyllis and John Aitken.

Saturday was another social game. In Ladies Consistency Gloria Shaw def Jo Littler and Eileen Pierce def Marilyn Boulton. The raffle winner was Bob Patten.

Four Ladies went to Lismore for the week and had a great time winning four out of five games.

The other games were washed out. We did manage to get a runners up prize at one of the venues. The team was Gloria, Eileen Judy and Ede. We need to get into the rest of our Championships ASAP so organise your games this week. The Mixed Triples has to be called again as our draw sheet disappeared over the weekend.

Please make sure that you have your names down half an hour before starting time for all days as you may miss out on a game.
