Hi Everyone

A

s a teenager I had friends and cousins (even girls) who were obsessed by cars, and for the life of me I could never understand the fascination. My first car was an orange Volkswagen that I called Jaffa for obvious reasons – its colour and shape (yes very girly criteria).

I think this may have been my only car that I have ever really had any attachment to, and when I think back it was mostly because it was cute, and in my mind it represented freedom!

Last week I did a fair bit of research and reading about this weekend’s 'Muscle on the Mountain' event which is in its 5th year, and learned that cars are so much more.

Most interesting for me is although it has muscle in the name, there are plenty of ‘lady revheads' and one 'Nanna revhead' that spoke to me about her passion. Check out the story on page 3 to find out more.

Local News Call goes out to car lovers

This Sunday, Maleny will play host to plenty of proud rev-heads and dedicated motoring enthusiasts of all ages at the 5th annual ‘Muscle on the Mountain’ Show & Shine Day at the Maleny Showground.

Event organiser, Col Sinclair said they're hoping for great weather and expecting up to 700 - 800 cars and 5000 - 6000 people there for the day.

The event was created five years ago as a fundraiser for Prostate Cancer Foundation, and it started out very small. Each year the participation and visitors has continued to grow.

There will be Holden HSV, Ford FPV, Muscle Cars, Hotrods, Street Machines, Vintage Cars, Classic Cars and Motorcycles, with plenty of vehicles you just don’t see driving on the road.

I recently caught up with Glass House Mountains local and regular attendee who plans to head up the mountain with her 73 Corvette Stingray, with a 454 Big Block, and Sharon Bobhoe made it very clear that the day isn’t just about the fellas.

Happy to describe herself as a "Revhead Nanna" Sharon said was a really good day out, which attracts people from all walks of like, with some travelling from over the border for the day.

“Not all the cars on display are absolute show cars, some are in original condition, some look

Co-ordinator of the Glasshouse Country Prostate Support Group, Bob McLean thinks the event is a great opportunity to promote both awareness of, and a fundraising opportunity for, Prostate Cancer.

Bob and some of the group members will be working on the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Information Booth on the day.

Gates open from 6.00am with breakfast, lunch will be available to purchase at the grounds, and entry is by gold coin donation.

And ladies, if you are not a car enthusiast, but are looking for a day out in the Hinterland you may want to head along to the Artisan Show & Sale Day at Maleny Showgrounds, presented by the Maleny Arts & Crafts Group, or into town to check out the Markets at the Maleny RSL Hall, or up at the Community Hall. Bombshells Media are a not-for-profit organisation established by local ladies Nicole Bradley and Alison Prentice. With the motto of ‘celebrating the femininity and beauty of everybody’, the girls have decided to create a yearly calendar featuring women from all walks of life that will be produced as an annual fundraiser to promote women’s causes.

Nicole and Alison have known each other for around seven years, and share a common bond of having children at the same school and both enjoy a wicked sense of humour. The project came about when back in September 2014, they were joking around on a Facebook thread with friends about doing a cheeky calendar, when Nicole messaged Alison asking her about her thoughts about doing a calendar for real.

It seemed a perfect opportunity to combine their love of helping people with seeing people have a good time - and all for a worthwhile cause.

Production of the 2016 calendar is currently underway with proceeds going towards supporting ‘White Ribbon’ – a campaign to stop violence against women.

Recently the girls arranged a fabulous vintage inspired photo shoot working with Mooloolaba photographer Paula Brennan at the Beerwah CWA. The shoot featured 10 members of the local CWA and then the shoot moved on to a beautiful spot up in the mountains, using the Glass House Mountains as a back drop.

Glamming it up with the CWA Beerwah ladies “We have a great network of ladies here on the coast. It was important to us that the models be real women, and women that would enjoy the day itself. Having the local CWA come on board was absolutely wonderful,” said Nicole.

The second day of shooting has been scheduled for Warwick, where they will use the heritage listed Criterion Hotel as vintage era backdrop.

So far the ladies have secured Liquor Legends as a major sponsor with plans to secure further sponsorship once the photo shoots have been completed.

It's budget time for Council Last week Sunshine Coast Council handed down their $588 million budget for 2015/16, which Mayor Mark Jamieson describes as balancing the delivery of Council’s important core responsibilities with implementing a visionary direction to shape the region’s future.

Some of the broader-picture budget items that will affect your hip pocket, along with fast-facts from Division 1 and 2. How council’s budget affects rate payer’s hip pocket The majority of ratepayers will receive a one off $17.00 carbon tax rebate. This results in the majority of ratepayers seeing an increase of just $1.65 on their July rate notice.

The bottom line rate increase for the majority of ratepayers will be 1.5% - $20.30 over the 12 months after discount or 39 cents a week.

The majority of ratepayers would pay the minimum general rate of $1,110 per annum.

A standard 240 litre wheelie bin will increase by $6.90 per annum.

Early bird and pensioner discounts and the transport, environment and heritage levies are unchanged.

Garden waste bin charge has been reduced from $70.00 to $60.00 per annum.

You can now dispose of your unwanted mattress and non-degassed fridge for free.

And clean timber loads and clean plasterboard loads have each been reduced from $161.00 per tonne to $50.00 per tonne.

Rally around the Suba Roo Bruce and Kerrie Allen from ATL Graphix in Beerwah will soon be hurtling their way from Redcliffe to Rockhampton (via Augathella, Clermont and Airlie Beach) on the Great Endeavour Rally.

Their trusty yellow Subaru rally car has been transformed with a new blue look – Team Suba Roo (or Car 125), thanks to a major sponsorship from Hand Heart Pocket … the major benevolent fund of Freemasons Queensland.

As part of their charity program, The Landsborough Masonic Lodge decided that they would organise to raise money to sponsor Car 125 and through a concerted effort, gained the support of 22 other Masonic Lodges on the Sunshine Coast and nearby areas.

In total, the Lodges raised $5,000 which through Hand Heart Pocket is matched dollar for dollar, meaning that the Landsborough Masonic Lodge organised an amazing $10,000 donation from Freemasons Queensland.

The entire amount goes to the Endeavour Foundation as part of the funds raised by Bruce and Kerrie.

According to Rick Joyce from the Landsborough Masonic Lodge, this carries on the tradition of lodges doing charitable works wherever the need arises.

“We have been helping out local groups for many years, with recent projects including the new garden shed at BADYACC and the new shower unit for Need-a-Feed at Beerburrum,” he said.

“The Endeavour Foundation is a fantastic organisation providing great services and opportunities for people with a disability.

“As Bruce and Kerrie rally their way across Queensland, the Masonic Lodges along the route will be fundraising to contribute to Team Suba Roo’s final donation total,” added Rick.

This will be Bruce and Kerrie’s fifth Endeavour Rally, and Kerrie explained that it was the rallying which first drew them to be involved in 2006.

“But after that first rally, we found we really enjoyed the camaraderie and community spirit that the event generated.

“So since then, we’ve participated with the main aim to raise money for the Endeavour Foundation, make new friends … and do a bit of rally driving as well,” explained Kerrie.

Bruce is thankful for the support the Freemasons are giving him on this Endeavour Rally.

“Through their involvement, we’ll be able to raise awareness of what the Masons are all about and what good community charity works they perform and assist. And make a difference, through the Endeavour Foundation, to the lives of people living with a disability.”

Fashionable fundraiser Local Beerwah lad Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell has been selected to represent Australia this September at the Men’s Junior World Boxing Championships in Russia.

With only six young people selected Australia wide, this is an amazing achievement especially given that Dana has only been boxing since 2013.

In a testament to his natural ability, passion and commitment to the sport, earlier this year Dana represented Hinterland Boxing Club (HBC) and Queensland at the Australian Boxing Championships on the Gold Coast. He went on to win the title of 46kg junior gold medallist.

With only 11 fights under his belt, Dana’s talent has shone through, evidenced by his selection to the World Championship Team.

With less than 60 days to go, a fundraising campaign has been established to help get Dana’s mum, as well as Coach Stephen Pitt, to Russia to help support and watch Dana compete.

Planning for the 44th Annual Beerwah Charity Sports Day is underway with the event set down for Saturday, August 22 at the Beerwah Sportsground.

As always it will be a day filled to the brim with good old-fashioned family entertainment.

Pineapples in the spotlight

Pineapples have played a major role in the development of Glasshouse Country since the early 1900s, and pineapple farms dominated the landscape for decades.

The next Peachester History Committee meeting, on Sunday, July 5 will focus on the history of the pineapple industry in this district.

There will be a display of photographs and memorabilia from the PHC collection, together with contributions from other local families.

The meeting is at Peachester Hall from 11.00am, and includes a shared lunch.

Church celebrates 25 years

Contributed by Murray Robertson The Uniting Church in Maleny was full of visitors last weekend to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the building of the church in Landsborough Road.

A key feature of the building project was the team of volunteers who did the work under the leadership of Mr Lanse Tainton. Some of the original team of volunteers who were present over the weekend included Shirley and Lloyd Larney, Betty, Doug and Bryon Rev Catherine Solomon with Watson, Betty and George Diefenbach, Dr John Roulston, who spoke at Frank Geritz, Miriam Barnes, John and the opening service 25 years ago Liz Brehaut, George Armstrong, Tim Simpson, Heather Jones, and Doug Chetwynd.

Andrew Powell, State Member for Glasshouse spoke at the Men’s Breakfast.

His topic, the needs of men in the Maleny community, attracted interest from the 50 men present. He said that the needs of men change through the different seasons of life and he challenged the churches present to assist men to grapple with their needs in responsive and relevant ways.

In the celebration service on the Sunday, present church member Murray Robertson interviewed long time member Mrs Shirley Larney who had participated in the original service. Shirley paid tribute to the vision and energy of the volunteers, and recognised the invaluable contribution of Isobel Bryce in donating the land on which the church now stands.

Representing the Bryce family at the celebrations were Harvey Bryce, and Ian and Diana Bryce. Guest speaker at the service was Dr John Roulston who had conducted the first service. Also present over the weekend, were several past ministers: Rev Jan Reid and husband Graham, Rev and Mrs Brian Whitlock, Rev Ray and Mrs Margaret Townsend, and Rev Lloyd Williams. Thanks to all the local Maleny people who made this a memorable celebration.

Landsborough Hall update

Contributed by Linda Morse If you have driven past the Landsborough Hall recently you will have noticed there is a lot of building going on.

Last year, with the assistance of Cr Rick Baberowski, the Hall Committee successfully obtained a $55,000 grant. We are proud to announce that stage one of the structural repairs is nearing completion.

This has been a massive undertaking for the Hall Management Committee, and fundraising has added an additional $38,000 to the grant money.

A structural engineers report was commissioned in 2013, and revealed the need for urgent repairs. The damage became clear when the removal of existing stumps revealed extensive damage, and a number of stumps were free floating. Substantial steel bearers are now in place and approximately 30 stumps are no longer required. This highlights the timeliness of the current reconstruction work and necessity for the repair work. Re-siting the supper room / craft room will provide additional stabilisation to the building and the new room will accommodate the craft room which is to be demolished when all the work is completed.

Recent heavy rains caused flooding in the existing work area under the hall.

The new building reduces the risk of damage from flooding.

Bundesen Family Builders are close to completing stage one of the project.

Stage two will focus on repairing the facia and guttering.

This work will be funded by the grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and supplemented with funds raised from ongoing fundraising.

The Hall Management Committee’s major fundraiser for the year is the November Cent Auction. The Hall Committee welcomes new members, they meet on the first Thursday of the month at the hall at 7.00pm, and the next meeting will be on Thursday, July 2.

Mooloolah Lions Club Update

Contributed by Diane Hobson The Club recently attended their Changeover Dinner at Flaxton Gardens Restaurant, together with their sponsor club Maleny Blackall Range.

Past President Paul Farrugia thanked the Mooloolah club members for their hard work throughout the two years of his presidency and awarded members Ron and Lynda Flanigan a Community Service award.

The new president of the club, Kathy Sellick, was sworn in by Mike Christie (Area Manager). Kathy thanked Paul for his commitment and dedication to the club. Paul will be the club treasurer for the coming Lions year.

The club were pleased to welcome a new member, Jessica Raintree, who was inducted into the club. Jessica is keen to serve the community and to assist the club in building its membership.

At the last dinner meeting of the year, held at Glenview Gardens, President Paul presented cheques to Vanessa from Mooloolah State School P & C, and Debbie from the Lions Emergency Accommodation Centre from money raised throughout the year.

Further donations will be given to Eudlo State School P&C, Glenview State School P&C, the Eudlo Rural Fire Service and the Landsborough State Fire Service. Other recipients during the year, from funds raised, have been the Mooloolah Valley Playgroup and before and after school care.

The club also donated funds toward a Lions Zone project to assist a young autistic boy in obtaining a Smart Pup. The members look forward to the new Lions Year and to serving the Mooloolah Valley Community.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Aussies caring for Aussies We are lucky to have a number of local organisations dedicated to the care of sick or injured native wildlife.

A huge number of volunteers countrywide devote their lives to rescuing, raising or nursing animals, with the ultimate aim of releasing them back into their natural environments.

Rehabilitators must have appropriate training, adequate time, suitable facilities and be prepared to meet all the costs incurred, such as for food, housing and some veterinary expenses.

Foraging for fresh native foliage is often required; many birds require native blossoms daily, while koalas and possums require native foliage. GMAN has recently planted more than 500 trees specifically to provide foliage for koalas cared for by local group Koala Action Inc. There are basic rules to be adopted if you find an injured native animal or bird. DO NOT give anything to eat or drink as this can cause further injury or death. Place all animals in a suitable container. Keep them warm, quiet, in a dark location, and away from children, domestic animals and noise. Call your nearest wildlife rescue organisation or vet, and follow their instructions carefully.

If you find a kangaroo, wallaby, possum, glider or koala that has been injured, make sure you check the pouch – joeys have been known to survive in the mother’s pouch for several days following her death. Do not remove the joey from the mother’s teat as irreparable damage can be done to the joey’s mouth if removed from the teat incorrectly.

Native plant sale to help native bees

Do you know the difference between native stingless bees and introduced honey bees?

Do you know why it is so important that we maintain a healthy bee population and why bee populations are in decline?

Jeff and Ann Ross are on a campaign to save all species of bees which are experiencing major problems because of either habitat or health issues.

To do this they have designed an innovative and sustainable 3D printed, stingless native beehive prototype, in collaboration with the Sunshine Coast University. However, to produce these hives the university needs to purchase a larger 3D printer which will also be used for other purposes.

The heat waves of 2013/14 in South-east Queensland devastated both honey bee and stingless native bee colonies across the region. They were housed in traditional hoop pine boxes that just weren’t capable of protecting the colonies from that level of heat. Over the past two years HiveHaven has worked feverishly to develop solutions to this and other apiary problems, such as temperature control, small hive beetle, and spore based disease.

The GMAN nursery will hold a plant sale on Saturday, July 11 at Glass House Uniting Park from 8.00am with all money raised to go towards crowd funding to benefit the above program.

There will be plant giveaways for customers and an opportunity to see the bee hive prototype. Ann Ross will be present to discuss issues related to bees and to answer your questions about all types of bees and their importance to agriculture and society generally.

ATO increases focus on rental property deductions The ATO will have an increased focus on rental property deductions this tax time and is encouraging rental owners to double-check their claims are correct before lodging their tax return.

In particular, the ATO is paying close attention to: excessive deductions claimed for holiday homes, husbands and wives splitting rental income, deductions for jointly owned properties that is not supported, claims for repairs and maintenance shortly after the property was purchased, and interest deductions claimed for the private proportion of loans.

While the ATO will be paying closer attention to these issues in 2015, it will also be actively educating rental property owners about what they can and cannot claim.

For example, the ATO will be writing to rental property owners in popular holiday locations, reminding them to only claim the deductions they are entitled to, for the periods the property is rented out or is genuinely available for rent.

When getting rental property deductions right, there are a few simple rules rental property owners should follow, to avoid making mistakes on their tax return.

First, it is important for all property owners to keep accurate records. This helps to ensure they declare the right amount of rental income and they have evidence for claims made.

Secondly, rental property owners should only

claim deductions for the periods the property is rented out or is genuinely available for rent.

Finally, costs to repair damage, defects or deterioration existing on purchase, or renovation costs, can’t be claimed as an immediate deduction. These costs are deductible over a number of years.

But we all know someone who’s experienced a serious illness or accident, and we all know it could happen to us at any stage.

Without naming names, let me share with you a cross section of some real life client insurance claims that were paid during 2014:- A 31-year-old fitness centre owner died of bowel cancer, and her beneficiaries were paid $262,500.

- A 49-year-old scientist died in a car accident, and his beneficiaries were paid $428,321.

- A 50-year-old roof tiler died of a stroke, and his beneficiaries were paid $463,741.

- A 39-year-old administration worker was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, rendering her totally and permanently disabled. She received a payout of $577,500.

- A 49-year-old pharmacist became totally and permanently disabled after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and received a payout of $502,690.

- A 12-year-old child was diagnosed with Classic Hodgkins Lymphoma, and the child’s mother received a Trauma payout of $110,250.

- A 29-year-old carpenter was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer, and received a Trauma payout of $300,000.

- A 45-year-old real estate agent underwent Open Heart Surgery, and received a Trauma payout of $347,287.

It’s clear that events like this don’t always happen to ‘someone else’, but in fact can happen to you or your family members.

Your tax questions answered When do I have to lodge my 2015 tax return?

If you prepare and lodge your own tax return, you must lodge it by October 31, 2015. If you are using a registered tax agent, the tax agent has other deadlines, in most cases up to May 15, 2016. However, if you are using a tax agent for the first time, or you are going to use a different tax agent this year, you must contact them by October 31, 2015.

Do I need receipts to claim deductions for workrelated expenses?

You can claim up to a total of $300.00 of workrelated expenses without the need to have written receipts. Once your claim exceeds $300.00 you must have receipts for the full amount.

The expenses you claim must be related to your income and not be for private purposes.

The expenses must have been paid for between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. It's risky to fudge the dates!

If your employer reimbursed you for your workrelated expenses, you can’t claim the expenses in your tax return. You have already got your money back!

I donated to several charities last year. Can I claim a tax deduction?

To claim a tax deduction for your gift or donation, the organisation you donated to must be registered as a deductible gift recipient. Art Union tickets do not qualify as a tax deduction!

You can go to the ATO’s website www.ato.gov. au for more information on what you can claim and can’t claim. You can also ask a registered tax agent.

I have a rental property. What can I claim?

The basic answer is that you can claim all expenses incurred in connection with the rental property. Each year the ATO publishes a Guide for Rental Property Owners. This guide details what you can claim and can’t claim.

You can download the guide from the ATO’s website, www.ato.gov.au. A major point: If the construction of your rental property commenced after 18 July 1985, you may be able to claim depreciation of the original construction cost of the building. Ask your tax agent!

How do I prepare and lodge my tax return?

For most people the preparation of income tax returns has not become easier over the years, but the ATO is providing e-tax, which enables tax payers to prepare and lodge their tax return electronically. Most taxpayers still go to an accountant or tax agent to ensure the return is prepared correctly and claims are maximised.

If you expect a refund, many tax agents offer to deduct their fee from the refund.

Let me introduce you to our team, not only are we highly professional accountants – we are also here to be your best friend.

Years ago major changes were made to the way individuals were assessed with the introduction of the Taxation Laws (Self-Assessment) Act 1992.

The Self-Assessment Act meant that individuals lodged a return based on their own honesty. The return would be assessed automatically – we had entered the world of computers.

In 2004 the Self-Assessment Act was reviewed by treasury and recommendations made to the Government on what changes should be made to improve the system. Those improvements came into effect in 2013.

The result?

The Self-Assessment System puts the onus on the taxpayer to make sure that their return complies with taxation laws.

Every year the tax office becomes more aware of what is happening. Every Government department is now linked to the tax office.

Certain institutions are required to report to the tax office. Employers are required to inform the tax office of payments made to individuals, whether they are employees or contract workers.

All of this information is used by the taxation office to check against your tax return lodged.

It generally takes the taxation office a year to match this information. This is because it takes the various institutions time to get the information to the tax office.

All through the year, the tax act is being tested. This generally happens as a result of an audit.

When an auditor disallows a particular claim, the onus is on the taxpayer to prove that the expense is directly incurred for the purpose of earning the income … not the auditor to prove that the expense is not necessary.

So, the taxpayer has the joys and expense of fighting the ATO through the courts to prove their case.

In the event that the ATO wins the case, the Government is extremely happy and nothing more is said. Except that it has been proven that a particular expense is not deductible.

In the event that the taxpayer wins the case, the ATO is not happy and sets about to redefine how that deduction needs to be substantiated.

Hence, for our clients, it looks like the legislation is changing because they are having to keep more and more detailed records for the same expense they’ve always been claiming.

With the latest changes from the 2015 Budget, there is even more emphasis on planning for a retirement.

This is something that should not be left to the last minute.

School News Big cuppa of thanks

Contributed by Brad Owens In June this year, Maleny State High School combined their annual ‘Big Cuppa’ for cancer research with a ‘Thank You’ luncheon for the 25 representatives from different organisations and individuals who donated books to the school library on ANZAC Day. The donation of books, instead of floral wreaths at ANZAC Day ceremonies, has become a Maleny tradition encouraged by the Maleny Branch of the RSL to provide a lasting legacy to local schools, Maleny Hospital and Erowal Aged Care.

Inside each book is a commemorative sticker acknowledging the generous donors as a perpetual reminder to students and staff that through giving we give hope for humanity in a world often dominated by the senseless taking of life.

We were honoured at the luncheon to have Shirley Larney OAM, a beautiful lady and a wonderful role model who continues to give so much. Shirley donated two books in memory of her father, George Svenson, a WWI solder and Gallipoli Veteran. She wrote, ‘I hope the books chosen in memory of my father, become well-worn and helpful to students’.

These small acts of giving embody both the spirit of the ANZACs and our contributions to cancer research. The delicious luncheon and barista coffee were provided by the Maleny High Interact Club.

The Glasshouse Country Toastmasters recently finished an eight week Youth Leadership Course for 31, Year 6 students, at the Glenview State School.

At the graduation night, they all surprised their family and friends with the progress they made during the course.

All the speeches were written by the students themselves and were of excellent quality.

They were either informative, hilarious or brought a message to the audience.

Students who did not give a speech on the night took on a role as Chairman, Vice Chairman (introducing the speakers) Table Topic Master or Evaluator.

They all did a terrific job.

Every year the Youth Leadership Coordinators are amazed how quickly the children discover their hidden talents, when guided in the right direction.

There was no hesitation to come to the lectern and complete their task, and no nerves, but if so, they did not show it.

We’d like to thank Glenview School for offering this course to their students making it a part of their curriculum for the last seven years.

Sufferers of TMD are more likely than people without pain to have suffered trauma, grind and clench their teeth, suffer from other forms of chronic pain disorder (such as migraine, tension headache, irritable bowel, fibromyalgia), and have non-painful TMJ symptoms such as jaw noise and limitation of mandibular opening. The most common forms of TMJ pain are arthralgia (or pain in the joint itself) and myofascial pain (muscle pain). Pain that is coming from the joint may be related to a disc displacement disorder (from a bad trauma to the head area, or a click or intermittent locking. It can also be related to degenerative, psoriatic or rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune or congenital disorders.

Myofascial pain or muscle pain is something that about 70% of the population experiences. It can be localised to the head and neck region or can be more widespread. In general the management of myofascial pain involves stress management, regular exercise, good posture and body mechanics, healthy diet, and adequate restorative sleep.

Tai Chi for health and Well-Being

The ancient Taoists were renowned for their study of the arts of health and longevity. Sharing your skills

I commented to a colleague at a concert recently that his guitar playing seemed to have taken a leap since I’d last heard him play. As he was already a very good guitarist, a leap in performance level is unexpected.

He said he could put it all down to a friend (also a fine guitarist) who had been visiting him weekly over the last months and they played together, shared repertoire and challenged each other musically at these meetings.

I thought that wonderful to hear.

In my experience most professional musicians don’t look hard enough for the opportunities to progress their talents, they are far too involved with their work and are generally confident in their own abilities. But here was a perfect example of what can be achieved when the chemistry is right.

This raises for me a few themes worth addressing with today’s hectic lifestyle - taking time out for yourself, sharing skills and finding the resources and people necessary to help us grow as individuals and communities, and for many of us, as artists.

So many students for example struggle to be able to afford music lessons.

Musicians struggle to pay for studio recordings that will further their career.

Perhaps they might think creatively about what they can bring to the table.

Do they have accounting or legal skills or can they maintain cars, build web sites, fill out funding application forms, clean houses, mow lawns or tend gardens?

It isn’t hard to share what you do well, and for many people an hour weeding a garden gives a reward in itself, and to follow that with a cup of tea and an hour making music and picking up tips and finding inspiration in what a more experienced musical colleague might be able to offer you, is a very positive activity to have in your week! So if you feel you want to move your music forward or are just feeling a little stale with it, don’t dally - consider all those great musicians who live around you. Get in touch with some of them and see what they might like you to bring to the table.

And while you’re at it, have a musical month.

Moofest is coming

Mooloolah local Natalie Pettingill is one of those active community minded people. Her latest venture, along with other like minded locals, is to put on a family orientated live music event – the ‘MooFest’ music festival, which will be held on September 5 at the Mooloolah Recreation Grounds. Having come across a number of music festivals around the coast, the idea came up to do something locally that families could easily attend at a minimal cost.

With strong support from the local school, Community Centre and others around the area, the initial idea has grown into a full day of entertainment with a dedicated soundstage, kid’s zone and stalls already committed for the event. Well known Sunshine Coast band ‘Sons Of Korah’ have already been confirmed as the headline act and the day will feature a mini market, craft and community organisation stalls, a special kid’s area packed with fun stuff as well as food and drink stands. Already Natalie has secured a heap of local support and funding commitments. The event will run from 11.00am until 5.30pm and entry will be via a donation which will go towards fundraising for World Vision. Great eats and treats to find locally!

Sacred Tree Café Obviously one of the perks of my job is getting to try out our local cafes and call it work. But to be honest, my favourite thing is to find the things that are unique to each of the different locations, and there are plenty.

At Sacred Tree Café in Landsborough – the friendliness and passion of the dynamic mother and daughter duo Julie and Sarah for what they do, is definitely part of the appeal at their café.

Last week Brownie and I popped in for breakfast on our way to work, as they are open from 6.00am you can start the day off with a very hearty ‘Big Breakfast’, and still get to the office for opening time!

I am not actually sure if ‘Big Breakfast’ is the correct name for what they serve. It should probably be the ‘Massively Awesome Breakfast’

– as it includes eggs of your choice, heaps of bacon, sausages, tomato, baked beans, mushrooms, toasted Turkish bread, a yummy potato rosti, and some really tasty homemade tomato relish.

While no one forced me to choose the biggest item on the menu, I was happy to sacrifice myself in the pursuit of research, and it did mean that lunch wasn’t required.

As this is not my first time at the Sacred Tree I can also vouch for the fact that they have a really great range of breakfast items for both dine in and take away, including pancakes, fritters and bacon and egg rolls served on very generous Turkish bread rolls.

Sarah who is the boss of the kitchen, likes to cater for everyone’s needs, and also has great

vegetarian options. Where possible Sarah is also happy to ‘veganise’ something off the menu.

Sacred Tree Café have also been developing a great reputation for their Raw Vegan Chocolates range, which they are now also selling at the Healthy Guru at Beerwah.

Mum, Julie is the boss of front of house, and she described the range as being a much healthier alternative to traditional chocolate. They have them in six different flavours which reflect those of Cherry Ripe, Bounty, Peanut Brittle, Twix, Tim Tam Hearts and Snickers.

The café is open every day but Tuesday, on the weekdays they open from 6.00am to 3.30pm and on weekends you will find them on Caloundra Road, at Landsborough from 7.00am to 3.30pm on Saturday and 7.00am to 2.00pm Sunday.

Things To Do Film society celebrate NAIDOC

The film society is proud to be screening ‘Honouring the Boys from Barambah’, a 17 minute film which tells the amazing story of the bravery of our Black Diggers from the small community of Cherbourg (formerly Barambah) during the Great War of 1914-1918. Star of the film, Eric Law has seen war first hand as a veteran of the Vietnam conflict. He is also an elder of Cherbourg community and will give a talk about the film and the boys being honoured at the evening screening.

Staying with the Great War theme, ‘Testament of Youth’, directed by James Kent is an adaptation of the inspirational story of famed pacifist Vera Brittain whose seminal first WW memoir was first published in 1933. Alicia Vikander (Kitty in Anna Karenina) plays Vera who foregoes her hard-won place at Oxford to follow her fiancé (Kit Harington – Game of Thrones) and her brother to the war.

As a nurse she becomes intimately acquainted with the human cost of the conflict and her experience turns her into a lifelong pacifist.

Glenview State School is holding a mega car boot sale on Saturday, July 25 from 9.00am - 1.00pm.

Wind ensemble at Maleny for Living Water Project Mark Walton’s 40-piece Wind Ensemble will be first-time visitors to Maleny on Friday, July 17 at 9.30am at the Maleny Catholic Church, 45 Cedar Street Maleny. They will enthral you with a program of classical and popular toe-tapping music on a huge range of instruments. Mark’s lifetime career of music has included Chair of Performance at Sydney Conservatorium and an OAM for encouragement of young musicians in the outback.

This time they are playing for a cause: the opportunity for Maleny to provide a concrete water-tank to collect water from the roof of a primary school to supply 10 villages in a dry zone of Mayanmar (formerly Burma).

This ‘Living Water Project’ has been the passion of Rosemary Breen from Inverell for 10 years, and so far 80 tanks have been built by local labour.

This means that bullock carts no longer have to cart polluted water over long distances. Enjoy the concert and allow these children to enjoy clean water. Tickets are $10.00 including a scrumptious morning tea, bookings can be made by phoning 5499 9605 or 5435 2589.

Art exhibition and sale If you have some time to enjoy a visit to Montville this week, you will be able to share the creative work, and meet the artists of the Blackall Range Visual Artists group. The exhibition opens on Thursday, July 2 and continues until July 6 at St Mary’s Hall on the Village Green, from 10.00am – 4.00pm each day.

They are exhibiting affordable quality, framed and unframed paintings and cards are also available. There is no entry charge but donations toward the upkeep of the historic hall are welcome. They don’t have eftpos, however there is an ATM nearby.

You Said It Lights not required

On December 14, 2014 I sent a letter to the office of the Honourable Andrew Powell about my position regarding traffic lights at the Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street intersection, and I would like readers to be aware of my views.

I do not agree with most in that I think free flowing traffic would be a better solution than the lights. I think widening the road to allow safe alighting and mounting would be a more efficient way of securing users of the carriageway’s safety with the duplication of the whole of Steve Irwin Way in mind.

I would think that in the mind of prosperity and safety, that the Lutheran Church and Glasshouse Country RSL could be moved to Coonowrin Road, opposite the Bowls club and near the Community Hall as a more central and safer hub.

Council could help fully to provide a portion of the horse paddock as a safe convenient site with all costs met by all three tiers of government.

Just ridiculous

Living at Glass House Mountains less than 10 minutes from the Post Office I cannot believe the limited internet access we have. We are on satellite (as Telstra doesn’t have any available ports in our area), and this service means that basically all I can do is send and receive emails and occasionally get on a web site after waiting for a ridiculous amount of time for it to down load.

I pay $70.00 per month for a very inferior service. I recently rang Telstra for the third time within the last 18 months of us moving to this residence, only to be told yes we can get internet service, and then a few days later - sorry you can’t get internet service in this location.

Our internet connection gets even worse on cloudy days or if you want to check out web sites after 3.00pm then forget it, you just sit waiting forever for it to download.

I know I am not the only one in our area that is frustrated with these problems.

I hear a lot of people whinging about the NBN Wireless going in in surrounding areas, and we can’t even get a dialup connection, even though we all have phone lines coming into our houses.

I would also like to see if we can get the mail service in our area.

It is ridiculous that I can’t get the postie to deliver our mail to us. I have been in rural areas before and been 15 km away from the Post Office and the postie delivered to these properties.

I have never asked a politician to help me before with anything but this is getting beyond a joke and we really need these issues to be addressed promptly.

I hope that one of the local politicians is able to assist us in finding a solution to these problems.

LNP dinner

Ninety LNP members and supporters attended the dinner last Wednesday, with special guest, Leader of the Opposition Lawrence Springborg.

The evening was hosted by Glass House MP Andrew Powell and the LNP Maleny Branch, with the crowd attending from across the Sunshine Coast Region.

The dinner was held at the Maleny RSL which provided a wonderful venue and the catering was superb!

Andrew introduced Lawrence, and explained how he had taken the Leader of the Opposition around several locations in Glass House that needed immediate attention. Lawrence spoke about the changes he has seen in the Queensland Parliament over his 26 years, some of the colourful politicians, and memorable events.

Then Lawrence outlined how his parliamentary team was working on holding the government to account and developing future policies and plans for Queensland.

Questions came from all around the room, and afterwards attendees lingered over coffee and tea to chat with Lawrence.

No playground for five years?

Last week I had a reason to go to the Council Chambers, and while I was there, I had a question I wanted an answer for.

I recently read in the local paper that they are making a new fancy entrance to Turner Park.

I asked if the playground was going ahead as well, I had been talking to the person in charge of that area and was told that she would let me know. As I had not heard from her I wanted to know where it stands.

I was told that they are going to be getting grants toward the park for the next five years. I then asked them why they were spending so much on the entrance when there isn't much to go there for.

This did not make sense to me. I said you do not put up a facade to a building until you have some were to go, also you do not buy a bus until you have somewhere for it to go to.

I then said that the money that they are spending on another entrance to the park would have gone a long way for a much-needed playground like Pioneer Park at Landsborough for the children of Beerwah and surrounding areas.

A couple of years ago I wanted to put full size fiberglass and resin animals throughout the town and leading to Turner Park with a playground and dinosaurs for the kids.

This would have been done by now if the Chamber of Commerce and local elected member had supported it.

Oh well, no tourists, and no playground for five years.

Good efforts so far

The recent Peachester meeting with NBN and their information display was so well attended by locals that congratulations must go to your community for showing such a strong interest in the issue of putting a microwave tower into your town.

The estimate made of attendance put it to near 150 people who came to look at displays and ask questions (GC&M News, June 24).

When the population figures for the town are at about 430 people, this means about one third of the town, went through in the afternoon. This is an amazing indication of the town's interest and the level of awareness in Peachester.

With the assistance of Cr Rick Baberowski locals eventually convinced NBN/Aurecon reps to have a Q&A session at 5.30pm. The contents were a revelation to many locals as Jacqueline Crompton (representing Ericsson, technical equipment suppliers) said "there are no planning or health and safety restrictions," on the towers and NBN, (GC&M News June 24) This has been a shock to many of us to hear it announced in a public meeting.

It means locals have no real say despite any concerns or issues they have with the tower technologies. It’s clear we the citizens have no say at all. Health and safety are obviously to be ignored when raised by locals which is a sad state of affairs.

Peachester people should be pleased with their efforts so far, however there is still a big hill ahead - wait for the Council Development Application which probably will come in July/ August.

More Green Army projects

Sunshine Coast environmental projects were amongst those announced as part the third round of the Green Army program.

The successful projects in Caloundra and Maleny are set to make a real difference in the region over the 2015/16 year.

The local projects announced today include the Bells Creek Restoration Project and the Landscape Rehabilitation on Nature Refuges project in Maleny.

Opposition Leader visits Glass House

It’s official – I’ve announced on my first five ‘Fighting For’ projects: the upgrading of the Jubilee Drive intersection in Palmwoods; upgrades to Maleny-Kenilworth Road; the future Aquatic Centre in Maleny; additional car parking at Caboolture Hospital; and most recently the North Coast Rail Duplication. To celebrate the launch of these first five, and the many more to come, I invited Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg to spend a day in the Glass House electorate so he could see firsthand why these projects are such a priority. While he was here, we enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre mingling and chatting with the hardworking volunteers.

Mr Springborg also got to see where the traffic signals will be constructed later this year at Reed Street and he could appreciate after seeing it with his own eyes how vital this is for our community.

Impacts of heavy rain still affecting Glass House

Many of our primary producers were hit hard following the rain that hit on Friday, May 1 and I wrote to the state Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries just a few days after seeking his assistance with a funding package. The Minister’s response was underwhelming and blamed the Federal Government for not activating the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRAA).

I have now written to Federal MP Mal Brough seeking his assistance with this process and will keep everyone updated when I have some further information.

Jobs for the yard in July

Although it’s cooling down, July is a time when we can’t sit back and neglect the backyard and garden. There’s winter pruning and weeding to be done, mulching and fertilising to maintain, and planning for Spring. Here’s a list of things you might like to consider doing in July.

• Prune passionfruit vines of unwanted growth, mulch and water well.

Prune the vine by cutting all laterals (shoots coming from the main stem) back to two buds.

• Top up the mulch around fruit trees. Clean out your compost bin, spread the contents under your fruit trees, and start another.

• Feed your citrus trees. Use 125g of citrus tree fertiliser per year of age of the tree up to 1.25kg. You need to do this three times a year – July, November and February.

• Lift Dahlia tubers and store in sawdust. Break up clumps of day lily, chives or shallots and replant new plants.

• Winter pruning of roses - roses should not be pruned before July: a) old fashioned Roses only need to remove unsightly and dead branches in winter. b) climbers need to be pruned after they flower in spring. c) modern bush and standard roses are pruned fairly hard each July. Cut the water suckers to the ground (shooting from below the union).

• Time to plant bagged roses and if you need to, move existing rose bushes to another spot in the garden.

• Carry out heavy construction jobs (paving, pergolas, walls and steps) while it is cool.

• Feed your strawberries with Organic Extra. Also use fish and kelp regularly over plants to keep in good health and to prevent fruit rot. Keep plants well watered - try not to wet the berries. Mulch plants so the berries don’t lie on the soil; one of the best mulches is pine needles.

• Treat your lawn for bindii as soon as it appears. Any of the broadleaf lawn herbicides, such as ‘bindii and clover killer’ will do.

• Pruning acalyphas now will ensure that they have great flushes of new colourful foliage next Spring.

• Keep the high nitrogen fertiliser up to your cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli plants, as they need it to grow strong and large.

Vegetables Plant asparagus, broad bean, peas, beans, parsnip, rhubarb, english spinach, silver beet, zucchini, potatoes, carrot, kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, spring onion, turnip, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, celery, garlic, leeks, swede, sweet potato and tomato.

This phrase is one of my favorite scriptures found in Romans 8. I’m always fascinated to hear people ask, “why would a loving God allow all this suffering to happen?” My come-back question to this statement, why did God create us human beings in the first place? We were created for relationship, and God loves it when we are in right relationship with Him. I have five children and when they are in right relationship with us (their parents) there are blessings or advantages that flow on from their obedience, manners, and their contribution around the home. It’s only when the relationship is out of right alignment (through disobedience) that they begin to think the whole world is against them, even their own mum and dad.

Our heavenly Father wants to cover us, bless us and love us, but if we have shut ourselves out through disobedience or we allow issues

to cloud our better judgment then we rob ourselves of the blessings that come from being in relationship with Him. Over time we develop an attitude that separates us from God and we form our own opinion that God doesn’t like us. But remember God is slow to anger and quick to forgive, like a loving parent who wants the best for His children, and He calls us His Children. Don’t run from God, run to Him, allow Him to redeem and restore your spiritual relationship with Him. God is not mad at you, in fact He is mad about you! He promises us a future and a hope.

Think on this: When you’re walking in the rain under an umbrella you’re somewhat dry, the moment you step out from the umbrella you are drenched. Stay under the umbrella (or Gods covering, + grace) and you will find blessing.

Being close to God doesn’t mean we live without challenges or trials. What it does mean is, you have someone greater walking with you, guiding you through the storm. God is for you not against you. Read John 3:16, 1Corinthians 13 to see His measure of Love.

Contributed by Norm Taylor San Taekwondo players from Beerwah and Maleny had another very successful competition at the Caboolture Open last weekend. The seven team members won gold in five out of the six divisions they contested.

Some of the highlights were Aaron Lerch (who normally fights in the red belt division) defeating an older blac kbelt in sudden death overtime in the final. Dina Wick came from behind in her debut competition to win gold and Siena Cameron defeated two larger opponents, winning the final with a powerful punch that left her opponent unable to continue.

Ruben Tidy won gold in sparring and also took out the highest jump kick competition by kicking a target at a staggering 2.36m high.

Josh Collins had another great performance winning gold. Tyson Ratcliffe and Talon Wood both had great fights with Tyson winning silver and Talon narrowly missing out on the medals this time. Congratulations to the whole team and the coach, Cameron Taylor.

On Saturday, June 27, Beerwah Bulldogs held their annual Pink Day, raising much-needed funds for Breast Cancer research. It was also a tribute round to James Ackerman, where we retired our number 8 jersey for the game.

Contributed by Deb Gordon On Sunday, July 26 the Sunshine Orienteers are holding an off road riding event at Beerburrum State Forest, through forest trails, 4wd tracks, and single tracks, This is a great work out for your legs and your brain, as using a map, you search for targets.

You can take on your mates, your family or yourself in this three-hour race to test you to the max. Compete solo or in a team or do the 90 min recreation course for beginners and the not-so-fit.

The event runs from 8.30am to 1.00pm, and entry is $50.00 per adult or $25.00 for members, and the recreation course is $25.00 per adult.
