With the current tourism crisis being a big topic of conversation in the media, I was keen to see how Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) was going to tackle the topic head on in their promotional campaigns.

I have to say it was great to see at the launch last week that Glasshouse Country and Maleny were very much at the centre of VSC’s latest ‘spikey’ promotional initiative.

Council Budget Supporting Division 1 communities Almost $7 million will be invested

by Sunshine Coast Council in Division 1 projects in 2020/21 to support our community and ensure it continues to flourish.

Divisional councillor Rick Baberowski said that in developing council’s 2020/21 budget, every element of community and economic rehabilitation had been considered, from community group resilience to economic and environmental initiatives to help our healthy, smart and creative Sunshine Coast to thrive.

“To deal with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, council has deliberately kept investment high and will roll out a $242.3 million capital works program across the Sunshine Coast region,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The resulting economic impact of our investment is estimated to be around $300 million.

“Over the next 12 months, a greater focus has been placed on

projects that enhance community connectivity including the Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan project, which will see Cribb Street increasingly transformed to a more functional, stronger destination offering an inviting place for our residents and visitors to meet, eat, shop and connect in this remarkable historic township.

“Council will also continue road, pathway and park network upgrades.

“Throughout Division 1, we’re making great progress on building a network of parks in addition to continuously improving our road network. In particular we’ll see an upgrade package that includes major works to Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough and Johnston Road, Glass House.”

“From the Caloundra Road pathway renewal to Glass House Mountains Regional Trail upgrades and wayfinding signage, as well as various park and playground upgrades, including Clearview Park in Glass House Mountains, Beerwah’s Turner Park, Peace Memorial Park at Landsborough and Little Mountain Common Playground, the community and children of all ages will have even more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and live an active and healthy lifestyle.

“We’ll also formally start planning for a Glass House Mountains to Beerwah off-road cycle path, which will assist in our push for what will be an outstanding connection between two key communities and potentially become an excellent drawcard for cycling tourism.”

Council budget to deliver - Division 5 The 2020/21 Sunshine Coast Council budget was released last week and Division 5 councillor Winston Johnston said the $6.2 million for Division 5’s major capital works program would deliver a diverse range of benefits to one of the region’s largest geographical areas, along with $554,000 worth of minor capital works and divisional funding.

“The spectacular Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is among our nation’s best subtropical rainforest locations, complemented by its state-of-the-art discovery centre,” Cr Johnston said.

“Treasured by locals and visitors, this financial year council will invest $300,000 into a feasibility study as part of future plans to develop a new 24-hectare ecological park.

“We are also spending $100,000 on upgrading the picnic infrastructure at Mary Cairncross, to ensure our visitors have an

improved experience.”

“Division 5 consists of many unique communities and I am excited to be working closely with each of them to deliver healthy, smart and creative projects that best suit their needs,” Cr Johnston said.

“Safe access to schools is essential and council has secured $2.2 million in funding from the Queensland Government’s School Transport Infrastructure Program to build a new $105,000 stopdrop-go parking area and shared path along the northern verge of Glenview State School on Glenview Road,” Cr Johnston said.

“We’ve also received funding from the Australian Government via the Black Spot Road Safety Program to deliver a $385,000 upgrade of Glenview Road at Glenview.

“This year Palmwoods will benefit from $180,000 to boost road safety in Margaret Street and 2020 will see works begin on

a $865,000 upgrade to widen Diamond Valley Road at Diamond Valley.”

In Eudlo, $655,000 has been committed to seal McGilchrist Road (currently gravel) and Elaman Creek Bridge at Elaman Creek will be restored with a $130,000 allocation.

Council’s Road Reseal and Rehabilitation Program will see about $2.1 million invested in renewing and resurfacing roads in Conondale, Eudlo, Glenview, Hunchy, Maleny, Montville, Mooloolah, Palmview, Palmwoods, Witta and Woombye.

One Nation candidate for Glass House

Tourism promoted by passing a pineapple?

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party has flagged its intention to contest the seat of Glass House in the October state election, with Graeme Campbell gaining preselection.

Born on a dairy farm, Mr Campbell is now a parent who wants to see a bright, safe and viable future not only for his children and grandchildren, but for everyone.

“During my working career I have been a labourer, a teacher, a small business owner, a police officer, a miner and a public servant,” Mr Campbell said.

“I have seen and experienced the good and the bad of all these professions and it is from this perspective that my first-hand, real-life knowledge and experience brings me to this point in time where my circumstances mean I have the time and fortitude to speak up.

“My reason for being a teacher and then a policeman for over 25 years was because I saw that the greatest opportunity we could afford the next generation was to positively change this one. I am passionate about our education system and juvenile justice and look forward to implementing the policies of One Nation in both these areas.”

Coming to the conclusion that the two major parties have stopped listening to everyday Queenslanders and have allowed the country to become vulnerable, Mr Campbell decided to stand for One Nation.

Sunshine Coast tourism operators are ready to welcome back visitors – and are using a pineapple to show they are open for business.

Last week Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) launched a series of quirky new marketing videos that see tourism operators pass a pineapple around the region. You will recognise quite a few locals and locations.

The Big Pineapple has long been a star attraction on the Sunshine Coast. In the 1980s at the height of its popularity more than a million visitors would flock to the icon each year to take a photo and sample the legendary pineapple parfait.

The marketing videos aim to showcase the quintessential experiences that set the Sunshine Coast apart and encourage holiday makers to book their next Sunshine Coast escape.

VSC chairperson David Ryan said the video campaign would be rolled out through social media over coming weeks.

These include targeted social media advertisements promoting the Sunshine Coast’s sub-regions and the ‘A Taste of Escape’ campaign that invites travellers to discover the Sunshine Coast through sound.

Historical film a collaborative community effort Internationally acclaimed scriptwriter Carmel Joyce has been delighted with the collaborative and creative community spirit she recently encountered while working in Maleny on her short film ‘Blind Faith’.

The award-winning screenplay writer and president of the Moreton Bay Film Creators’ Network filmed scenes for her historically-based short film at the grounds of the Beersheba Living Museum and Maleny Historical Village over the last two weekends in June. She said she had been absolutely inspired by the generosity of all those she had approached locally to be involved in the project.

Carmel said she always had an interest in historical and family stories, and the concept for the script grew out her own family history, building on stories from her mother who grew up on a dairy farm in Palmwoods, and her Aboriginal friend Aunty Mary. She also wanted to honour the stories of young Aboriginal men who were sent off to war.

The film is based on the true stories of mateship and camaraderie of young local men going off to World War I, with a fictionalised main character to represent the more than 400 Aboriginal boys also sent off to the war.

“Once I started to make contact with the community in Maleny, everything for this film just fell into place! The goodwill extended to the project has been incredible and I’ve been very impressed with the respect for historical values of the past, and general interest in life and creative collaboration I’ve encountered from everyone,” Carmel said.

She said she was grateful for the assistance of Chas Morris and Terry Murphy from the Beersheba Living History Museum who provided additional historical data and authentic World War I uniforms for the shoot, as well as Sara Jackson and Sara Bucher, owner of Maleny Cheese, who kindly volunteered their horses for the photos. All four are members of the 5th Light Horse Regiment - Maleny Troop.

Carmel also appreciated the historical insights and local contacts provided by Desley Malone from the Maleny Historical Society and even managed to recruit young drama students from Maleny High School and local drama teacher Susie French to be involved in the filming.

Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail Stephanie Hunt has always had a thirst for adventure and since her teenage years has been drawn to exciting places and exhilarating adventures.

When she is not travelling the world, Stephanie works as a community engagement facilitator for HQPlantations.

Recently she launched a new Facebook group, Wildly Inspiring Community, as a way of inspiring others while international travel plans and adventures are temporarily on hold.

Stephanie shared with GC&M News her wonderful story about a rather epic adventure the Pacific Crest Trail in the USA that she hiked in 2018. We asked Stephanie about this once in a lifetime adventure and will follow up with some insights into life on the trail in the July 8 edition.

Q: Tell us about the Pacific Crest Trail and why you wanted to hike it?

A: Before leaving Perth to come back east to work for HQPlantations, I met a young woman who had just returned from hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in the USA. I knew a little bit about it from the book and movie ‘Wild’ but hearing her stories and seeing the photos really inspired me to have a crack at a long distance trail. The Pacific Crest Trail is a 2,650 mile (4,260km) trail through almost continuous wilderness from the Mexican border to the Canadian border through high desert, the Sierra Nevada mountain range, volcanic plains and the Cascade Mountain range. It meanders through 48 federal wilderness areas, 25 national forests, six national parks, five national monuments (these are similar to national parks not structures as the name implies), five state parks, and seven public Bureau of Land Management lands.

Q: That sounds like a very big and intense hike. How long did it take?

A: While I don’t particularly love walking, I do love travelling by unconventional means to places most never get to see, so for 155 days from March to September 2018, I put one foot in front of the other through sunshine, fog, rain, hail, snow, smoke and ash to become a PCT thru-hiker, the term used to describe someone who completes the entire trail in a single calendar year.

Many hikers (some would argue more sensible ones) tackle the trail in smaller sections over a number of years – some breaking it into four sections of similar lengths, others for a week or two here and there over ten or even 20 years.

Q: Where did you camp on the trail?

Community News Local churches rise to challenge

By Sonia Clark Last week GC&M News included an article about the small but resilient congregation at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Witta. It got us wondering how other local churches have coped with the COVID-19 challenges.

This week we caught up with Pastor Aaron Jackson from Beerwah’s Church on the Rise.

Pastor Aaron said the church had claimed a “victory over the virus” by being able to adapt relatively quickly to a revised model of engagement, allowing the church to positively rise to the challenge.

Pastor Aaron said the early days of restrictions and lockdowns proved a little stressful as the church rapidly moved to an online service model.

However, he said he found that in many ways it provided a positive opportunity to fast track some long standing projects.

“Once we found out that we couldn’t congregate in large numbers at the end of March, we only had a few days’ notice to work around the clock to get our church service online,” Pastor Aaron said.

“Other positive outcomes that came out of the situation were that certain projects that had been in discussion for a long time were able to be fast tracked, including updating our website and finalising improvements to our outdoor play area.”

There were a number of technological and logistical

challenges that needed to be addressed initially but as a team they were able to come up with solutions. He said he was pleased to see the online service gain wide interest, especially with community access to ‘church on demand’.

“While we can’t see exactly how many people are watching our services at any one time online, we are interested to see where our online service will go in terms of numbers and broader reach,” Pastor Aaron said.

“We’ve been getting great feedback from people enjoying the service online from places like Sydney and the Gold Coast, as well as very positive feedback from those who may be travelling or unable to attend services in person due to disability or care arrangements who appreciate the opportunity to connect with the Sunday service online.”

Currently the church is working towards Sunday, July 12 as the first day when they can gather with up to 100 people with appropriate social distancing measures.

To meet these requirements there will be a free ticketing system available via their website for those wanting to attend and, at this stage, the Sunday service will also continue as an ongoing online service.

The July 8 edition of GC&M News will feature a list of local church services that will be operating as restrictions are eased.

By Sonia Clark The Mooloolah Public Hall recently received a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council to replace the old wooden sleepers at the front of the hall and replace them with new ones. The project also saw the Mooloolah hall sign reposted and new turf laid.

Publicity officer Jason Carroll said that with any project of this type, and given the age of the grounds and the fact the hall dates back to 1905, there were understandably a lot of obstacles to overcome, such as unmarked water pipes and other utilities.

Fortunately, local landscaper Peter Papp from World of Jasmin overcame the challenges and had the job completed within three long days, often finishing well after 7pm in wet and cold conditions, Jason said.

Work on the flower beds was funded by a $2,000 grant from the council. Additional funding

assistance from the hall committee enabled the removal of the old and rotted wooden sleepers and reinstallation of new sleepers with posts concreted in to keep them secure for years.

“This project was well overdue and has been the icing on the cake for the newly redecorated hall, which is looking fantastic,” Jason said.

“Sadly we were not successful in our first round of the council’s COVID-19 funding, which would have seen additional improvements such as having under the hall fenced in and made secure, but we may be lucky in the round two update scheduled for mid-July,” he said.

The hall committee is excited to let the community know that the historic building is once again open for business and committee members look forward to welcoming the community back for events and hire.

Coming through COVID-19 Contributed by Diane Hobson As restrictions ease, Mooloolah Valley Lions are starting to plan our way back to serving the community in person.

During the pandemic we have had a few small fund raising events online including a Mother’s Day raffle, a five cent coin line for childhood cancer (when we asked the community to send a photograph of their coins in a line to be donated when it is safe for us to collect), a numbers board with a $100 prize and an online garage sale. Photographs of items for our garage sale can be sent to us with a selling price to be posted on buy and sell sites (personal details will 12

not be given).

We are looking forward to getting back to our monthly business meetings on Tuesday, July 7 at the Mooloolah Public Hall with COVID-19 restrictions in place. Our dinner meetings at the Mooloolah Country Club will now be on the third Wednesday of the month and will start once the club renovations are completed, hopefully in midJuly.

If anyone in the Mooloolah Valley area would like to get out and about after isolation and meet some of our members for a coffee we would love to see you.

Neighbourhood centre to reopen The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will reopen on Tuesday 14 July.

The neighbourhood centre offers a place for community connection and support. Emergency relief, information and referral is on offer to those in need.

The centre is also seeking volunteers to help in the day-to-day running of the centre, community events and initiatives. Basic computer skills are required for

volunteering in the office.

If you have three hours a week or even a fortnight spare, why not call in? You will be made welcome.

Hinterland Heritage Henry Dyer

This month we are focussing on local stories of our pioneering families.

We are spoilt for choice with so many interesting and informative stories available through our local history groups and sources.

The Landsborough Henry Dyer Museum is set to reopen to the public from today, Wednesday, July 1, and the team has provided some insight into the extraordinary life of Henry Dyer and his connection with the Landsborough (Mellum Creek) area.

The locality of Mellum Creek was initially established for farm selections around 1871 and the fledgling settlement was used as a stopping point for Cobb & Co coaches making the run to the Gympie gold fields.

According to local sources, around

1886 Henry Dyer came to Mellum Creek to manage a butcher shop for John McCallum, which led to a myriad of business and property interests in the area, including ownership of the general store, butcher shop, sawmill and hotel. Henry also went on to have a substantial family home built around 1888 on the Maleny-Landsborough Road, where he continued to reside and run his businesses until the 1930s.

According to the Landsborough Museum, Dyers Hall was a key community meeting place for the area located next to the Landsborough Hotel (formerly 7/11 Store). The building was built by Henry and was used for a variety of purposes including town and later council meetings, and predated the Landsborough Council Chambers and Memorial Hall.

Living - Music First Sunshine Coast live jazz show in a while Local jazz singer Robyn Brown has been making a significant impact on the Sunshine Coast jazz scene, creating thriving jazz events and festivals. However, unfortunately as with all events, this came to an abrupt halt with the coronavirus restrictions.

Finally, after no live entertainment for months, she is hosting the first live jazz event on the Sunshine Coast.

If you have been missing your nights out, you can now step out and experience the atmosphere of a 1940s jazz club with Robyn Brown & the Baker St Boys.

Step back in time to the days when swing was in, jazz was hot and fedoras were cool; when going to a nightclub meant dressing up, sitting at a table and enjoying elegant entertainment, sultry singers, talented musicians, gourmet food and fine wines.

After being starved of live music for months, you will have an opportunity to hear some of the

best the Sunshine Coast has to offer when Robyn performs with her band at Whispers Cocktail Bar, Caloundra on Wednesday, July 15.

Robyn said that so many people had told her that they don’t like jazz but when they hear her music they love it. With an extensive repertoire that covers early blues, swing standards, Latin, bebop, soul jazz and self-penned originals, her particular passion is the songs of the early jazz/blues singers.

“I love that I can sing a song that was written in 1914, but the heart and the passion of the song is still relevant today,” Robyn said.

“It’s great to present my own interpretation of the song in a way that connects with the audience, and the audience loves it.”

Infusing the blues with elegance and jazz with attitude, Robyn’s fine-grained tones imbue her music with relaxed phrasing, poise, confidence and a subtle sense of swing.

Today’s column is my 100th monthly article for the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News. It’s been nine years since we started this, so a big thank you to editor Lea Parkes for her support throughout this period.

I have thought a lot in these last months about where we are heading with our music making and the sharing of our love of it.

Lea has suggested I might take advantage of GC&M News now being online by providing links to other sources since there is so much of interest that is accessible online.

This is very sensible. If nothing else, sharing my forays online will allow you to take my short introductions as a starting point for your own explorations.

We look around us and many of us with despair at our treatment of others and the finite resource that is our planet.

Robyn is joined by Marnix van Bruggen on piano, Peter Walters on double bass and Max Sportelli on drums, who all have extensive experience working with many jazz greats and have toured through Australia and Europe.

Musically brilliant, enticingly moody, the quartet will perform material from Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong right through to Bill Withers and Vince Jones.

This concert will be in an elegant

dining setting giving the audience the chance to get up close to the artists and enjoy a delicious meal.

1 tbs Worcestershire sauce 300g mushrooms olive oil salt and pepper to taste For the dumplings 100g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 60g butter 1 egg 2 tbs parsley, chopped

Method For the stew: Cut the meat into bite-sized cubes. Dice the onion, carrot and celery. Crush the garlic. Slice the mushrooms.

In a heavy saucepan, heat some olive oil and cook the beef in batches. Remove the beef and cook the bacon. Set the beef and bacon aside and keep warm.

In the same pot add some olive oil, add the onion, celery, carrot and garlic and sauté over a low heat until the onion is translucent.

Add the flour and cook for two minutes. Make sure to stir and cook the raw flour flavour out of the mixture.

Add the beer, stir and bring to the boil.

Return the meat to the pan, along with the stock, bay leaves, Worcestershire sauce and mushrooms. Bring back to the boil and cover, reduce heat to low and allow to simmer for 90 minutes.

For the dumplings: In a food processor combine the flour, baking powder and cubed butter. Process until the mix resembles breadcrumbs. Add the parsley and process again briefly.

Add the egg and process until the mix comes together.

Use your hands to form about eight balls of dough.

If the mix doesn’t come together easily try adding a little water.

About 20 minutes before serving, add the dumplings to the top of the stew.

Cover and increase the heat to medium – this will give the dumplings a chance to rise.

Cook for 15-20 minutes until the dumplings have risen.

Serve immediately.

Local custard apple farmer Daniel Jackson was part of the first episode of ‘My Market Kitchen’, which is sponsored by Hort Innovation in partnership with Channel Ten. The program showcases growers’ stories, their produce and the research-driven innovations and practices that growers use on farm to deliver healthy, nutritious and sometimes unique fruit, vegetables and nuts to plates and lunchboxes across Australia.

‘My Market Kitchen’ will feature growers across 27 industries from almonds through to vegetables in 12 segments of the show. The first segment was aired on Friday, June 26 and the last episode will be in September.

The show visits growers on their farms and shares stories of their passion about growing the food many Australians eat every day.

Hort Innovation research and development manager and accredited dietitian Jemma O’Hanlon inspires viewers showing them how easy it is to enjoy nature’s produce through a range of recipes.

Daniel said that as a custard apple grower he was excited “to share our history and vision for custard apples with Australia, as well as hear from other growers and all that they do to produce the highest quality fruit, vegetables and nuts”.

“One of our projects funded through Hort Innovation include the custard apple elite varietal trial. We are trying to define species that grow better than others,” Daniel said.

“We are looking at different coloured or shaped fruit, seedless fruit, as well as nutrition and water development. We are sharing the information among growers, trying to identify what growers are doing differently.”

Daniel and his farm will be featured in the GC&M News ‘Meet the Producers’ section on July 8.

In the Garden Botany 101 – Seeds It’s back to school for GC&M News readers.

We’ve learnt about the male and female flower parts, how fertilisiation happens, the development of seeds and types of fruits that are produced.

This week it’s all about seeds. The development of the seed completes the process of reproduction in flowering plants.

The process is similar to what happens in the development of an embryo in animals.

After fertilisation, the male pollen sperm nuclei fuse with an egg nuclei to form the seed embryo, as well as with polar nuclei to form tissue called the endosperm.

The seed embryo is what becomes the undeveloped seedling, while the endosperm persists during the initial stages of seed development and in most species is used up as a food source for the developing seed embryo – except in many of the grass familytype plants, where the endosperm persists as a storage tissue and becomes a major benefit in commercially grown crops such as rice and corn.

The plant world is split into two main divisions based on the number of embryonic leaves – or cotyledons – they have within the seed.

They are either monocotyledon (one seed leaf) or dicotyledon (two seed leaves). This differentiation is used to separate all the plant families into the two broad groups: monocots and dicots.

Monocots – with one seed leaf – are families such as grasses and grains, lilies, orchids, bamboo, bromeliads, bananas and gingers.

Dicots – with two seed leaves – cover most of the flowering garden plants, shrubs and trees.

The easiest way to tell them apart is when the seed germinates and the seedlings grow. Dicots 24

Dandelion seeds rely on wind for dispersal

Some seeds need to be scratched and some need to be subjected to animal digestive acids.

Different plant species have different seed dormancy periods. Some seeds can remain viable for extraordinary periods of time. Lotus seeds excavated in archaeological digs have been dated as more than 1,000 years old and have still germinated.

However, some seeds – like many grasses – have very short viability periods.

Burrs catch in animal hair and are spread far and wide

Onions also have notoriously short-lived seeds.

In general, if plants produce lots of small seeds on a regular basis they don’t need to have long viability periods.

More seed also means more opportunity for genetic viability and adaptability to changing environmental conditions.

If a plant invests more energy into a seed and produces fewer seeds less frequently, then they will need to make sure that the seeds it does make have a viability period to give them the best chance of continuing the species through time.

Castor oil seeds contain a deadly toxin called ricin. It’s so deadly that if eaten one seed will kill a child. Ricin has been used in political assassinations.

The biggest seed in the world is from a palm tree in the Seychelles called coco de mer.

They can be an astonishing 30cm long and weigh 18kg each.

An orchid species has the smallest seed, being microscopically small at 85 micrometres in size and weighing 0.8 micrograms. You’d need 22.5 billion of these seeds to have the same mass as one coco de mer seed.

Bananas have seeds but they haven’t used them to reproduce for about 10,000 years.

Bananas have evolved to reproduce asexually by suckering.

When a seed germinates, the first root (called the primary root) always grows down … even in space. So it’s not in response to gravity, it’s just what they do (in fact it’s in response to a chemical called auxin).

A Grade – first place to Ian Dickson with 41 points, runner up Karen Love 38 points on a count back from Jon Fairman 38 points, third Mike Hallam 37 points. B grade – first place John Hay 33 points, runner up Neil Stenhouse 32 points on a count back from Sarah Harding 32 points and third David Durack 31 points.

Wednesday, June 24: A ladies single stableford was played with first place Susanne Hardy with 37 points, runner up Kerry Nieper 33 points and third Karen Heading 32 points on count backs from Margaret Goodger and Vivien Powell, both 32 points.

Sarah Widin welcomed Miggy Mackey back with a friendly game on Thursday, June 18. Good scores of 17–12 were recorded in Sarah’s favour. Vince Carbery played well against Ken Barker. Ken put together a couple of lucky breaks to get up 21–17. Wallace Roy and Helen Andrews played a tight game against Priscilla Vickers and Gillian Bradley 10–9.

On Sunday, June 21 Kath Smith and Vince teamed up to beat Donna Manning and Stuart Craig 12–8. Sarah and Helen

overpowered Wallace and Priscilla 15–6. Nick Cram and Ken played a topsy-turvy game, dogged by small miscalculations. The result was a win for Ken 18–14.

Play days have resumed! Thursday and Sunday afternoons are back.

Please arrive at 1pm for games to be arranged by 1.30pm.

Supervised practice is available on Saturday mornings at 8am on our excellent lawns, 200m in on the right side of the showgrounds on entry.

Rev Henry Beecher entered his church one Sunday morning and found several letters awaiting him.

He opened one and it contained a single word: “Fool”.

Quietly and with seriousness he shared the letter with the congregation and announced: “I have known many an instance of a person writing a letter and forgetting to sign their name, but this is the only instance I have known of someone signing their name and forgetting to write the letter”.
