k so Melbourne Cup is done and dusted, so you know what that means, the serious countdown to Christmas is in

full swing!

We haven’t cracked out the Christmas Carol CDs just yet, but the office is definitely about to become a full scale decoration explosion of this year’s Christmas theme of pink and white.

Yes we are going for a modern take on Christmas colours and we are also planning to get the fairy lights out of the boxes and hopefully they will work again this year.

I have also managed to find ‘Pink Outdoor Fairy lights’ for tizzying up the outside of the office.

As the organisers of ‘Lighting Up Glasshouse Country’ we are like many others who aren’t looking to win the competition, but we are keen to share our festiveness with those that enjoy it.

Finally I have gotten to the point – yes I am trying to subtly encourage as many of you as I can, who love setting up your Christmas lights and displays, to make sure your property is listed in our ‘public viewing list’.

By having your property listed it means that the rest of the community can make sure they come along and check it out and share in the Christmas Joy you have created for others!

A rollicking read

Maleny author Jack Wilcox has just released his third book ‘Coalman’ which promises to be a highly entertaining and readable memoir covering his life and extensive career as an advisor to senior government ministers.

Having cut his teeth on two successful regional histories, his third book captures the inner workings of behind the scenes political life with humour and insights into the tangled lives of politicians and bureaucrats in the Whitlam, Fraser and Hawke years.

‘Coalman’ reflects Jack’s long career in what was then a vibrant and emerging industry.

When Whitlam won the election, several government positions became available; Jack (on the toss of a coin) won the coal job portfolio.

This fortuitous event determined the rest of his career that spanned nearly 30 years.

He subsequently became the department’s adviser (and confidante) to ministers in the Whitlam, Fraser (Doug Anthony) and Hawke (Lionel Bowen) years, developing close ties, travelling overseas and becoming a sounding board to these high profile ministers. In 1984 he was appointed chairman of the Joint Coal Board (JCB) set up by Prime Minister Chifley and Premier McKell.

Given wide powers, Jack was more or less chief ‘policeman’ for all facets of the industry for nearly eight years. Upon his retirement he became chairman of a number of coal companies and was awarded the Order of Australia and an honorary Doctorate of Science for his services to the coal industry.

HBC fight night shines bright A crowd of around 400 people packed into the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Saturday, November 8 to witness the Hinterland Boxing Club’s (HBC) inaugural ‘Fight Night’ boxing event.

And according to HBC founder and tournament organiser, Stephen Pitt, the atmosphere was electric, and the skill, courage and determination shown by all the fighters on the 29 fight card was a sight to behold.

“We had an awesome turn out for our first fight night,” he said.

“I'm sure our home-town supporters now have a better appreciation of what our athletes go through and the level of commitment and hard work required to just step into the ring, let alone compete.

“The camaraderie shown between all boxers was heartfelt and HBC will continue to give our community achievements to be proud of,” said Stephen.

All six athletes from HBC boxed on the night, with two exhibition, and four competition bouts.

A stand out on the night was the final bout between HBC’s Taylen Pitt and Shane Goodman form Beaudesert.

“Taylen stepped up to fight in the main senior bout against an older and more fancied boxer.

“Despite the Beaudesert boy being three years older and undefeated, Taylen showed great class, composure and skill to take the title on a points decision,” said Stephen.

Stephen was also quick to add that, not only does it take a lot to plan, organise and execute events such as these, it also takes committed sponsors and supporters.

Seven rural fire brigades, along with additional assistance from aerial support and local residents, battled the blaze. It took three days to contain and resulted in approximately 50 hectares of fire damage.

In gratitude for the tireless work and bravery from the volunteer fire crews, local residents from the four roads nearest to the affected area banded together and raised over $1,420.00 in appreciation for the fantastic effort shown by the rural fire brigade.

The Valley’s longest residing resident Brenda Ratcliffe presented the donation on behalf of the residents to The Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade to be distributed between all the crews.

Starting around lunchtime on Sunday, October 26, a small garden rubbish fire triggered the outbreak. Given the extreme conditions of a very hot day, low humidity and strong gusts of winds, within a relatively short period of time it escalated out of control, and within hours, fire crews were struggling to put it out.

Two helicopters were brought in to provide assistance to the area which was spread over extremely difficult terrain on the ridge behind Diamond Valley Road. Water bombing was deployed and an around the clock command centre was set up.

Community consultation continues over Halls Creek By Greg Brown

The issue of whether to include or exclude Halls Creek from future urban growth and development continues to be debated and discussed.

The large parcel of land adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage roughly between Bells Creek and Roys Road, is owned by Stockland.

The State Government wants the area included in the South East Queensland Regional Plan for a new mini-city, however Sunshine Coast Council and an alliance of major community groups oppose the move.

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has recently continued his community consultation process after meeting with a number of community groups, including some local to the Glasshouse Country region.

“I am pleased to continue consulting with the community and listening to direct feedback from these important community groups,” Mr McArdle said.

This comes on top of a series of 12 information booth sessions at the Caloundra and Beerwah libraries in August and September.

“These offered take-home information booklets and survey forms which were collected by hundreds of local residents.

“We received a wide range of feedback at the information booths,” he said.

“Early results indicate all respondents are very aware of both Halls Creek and Beerwah East, which is a stark contrast to survey results released

“This shows that our community consultation process, in conjunction with others, about informing the community about both sites is working effectively.”

Mr McArdle said he would publicly release the results, once all data has been tabulated, for residents and all groups to view.

To add to the community knowledge surrounding Halls Creek, the Landsborough Area Community Association invites all interested people to an information evening at Landsborough.

The session is to be held at the Landsborough School of the Arts Hall in Old Landsborough Road this Friday (November 21) starting at 7.00pm.

Speakers will detail issues and information about Halls Creek and the council favoured Beerwah East option.

Mr McArdle was invited to attend, but unfortunately other commitments mean he is unable to be there.

GMAN … 25 years and still going strong In 1989 some pretty major events happened. The Berlin Wall came down … the Tiananmen Square democracy protests took place in China … the ‘Velvet Revolution’ began which eventually freed Czechoslovakia from communist rule …

Toyota launched the Lexus … the Exxon Valdez spilled 240,000 barrels of oil in Alaskan waters … Nintendo released the Gameboy … the Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini issues a fatwa on British writer Salman Rushdie for his book ‘Satanic Verses’ … and the Simpsons were first aired on TV. Then there was the momentous event that happened 25 years ago – the formation of a local community action group, which went on to become the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN).

A group of over 50 locals, guests, Mayor Jamieson and Cr Baberowski celebrated the milestone last Mayor Mark Jamieson spoke to the GMAN members about the importance of their 'Say No to Halls Creek' Campaign

Saturday at the Beerwah Hideaway, with memories, reminiscences and tall stories being shared.

Starting our as CAQE (Citizens Against Quarry Expansion), a core of eight locals banded together to fight the plans for an existing quarry to be expanded, a battle they eventually lost in the Planning and Environment Court in 1996.

In 1992, CAQE incorporates and expands their interests to become the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network.

Over the years, the group has fought against issues locally such as proposals for a toxic waste dump, a women’s prison, radioactive waste facility and helicopter flights over the Glass House Mountains, as well as the current Halls Creek urban development proposal.

Along the way, GMAN have also achieved many advances for the area – including the construction of the Trachyte Track around Mt Tibrogargan, the restoration of dozens of local bushland sites through tree planting, weed control, habitat repair and track building.

GMAN have run educational days for locals and schools; promoted the preservation of endangered local plants and animals (such as the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly); grown, sold and given away tens of thousands of local native plants from their nursery; planted koala food tree forests for koala rescuers to feed injured koalas; created and installed large tourism and educational signs and brochures for visitors to better enjoy our local

Cr Rick Baberowski with GMAN President Gwen Malcolm and her adoring husband Bob Malcolm area; and supported the renowned Glasshouse Trail Runs by staffing checkpoints and feeding the runners who take on the gruelling ultra-long distance events.

Throughout the speeches – from Don Barlow – the first President to Gwen Malcolm – the current President, a core theme of working towards ensuring the Glass House Mountains region is an enjoyable and environmentally-sound place in which to play and work came through loud and clear.

As the cake was cut and the cheers rung out, the achievements of the past 25 years of GMAN are no more abundantly apparent than in the rich and vibrant scenic natural environment we are all blessed to live within.

New Beerwah retail precinct officially opens The new $15 million Beerwah Village officially opened last Monday with local artwork installations and life-size images showcasing the site’s historic beginnings.

The new centre is located on the former site of Charles Wimberley’s family-based general store which opened in 1946.

Peachester resident Wally Breton has fond memories of being a little kid in those days.

“Wimberleys was the central meeting place for the whole area.

The Wimberley family were highly respected in the district,” he said.

“People would ring up and get their Cr Rick Baberowski with Rick Abraham, Director of Village Fair Investments and supplies sent out once a month.

If Charles didn’t have it, he would Pastor Rod Jobe order it in for people. That was just the way he was. “He sold everything from hardware, groceries, and drapery, even explosives,” said Wally.

Of greater significance to Wally is the life-size image of a 1935 tree felling woodchop championship at the Brisbane Exhibition in which Wally’s father, Bob, won. The image features Bob, George Parker, Alf Engle and Bill Fry. Highlights of the day were guests, Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin from Australia Zoo and a selection of animals and specialist handlers.

The official opening ceremony was conducted by councillor Rick Baberowski and a blessing performed by Pastor Rod Jobe (pictured).

New retailers include Target Country, a full-line IGA, The Coffee Club, Millers and a range of other speciality stores over the 6,000sq m development.

Beerwah Village, forms part of the existing Beerwah Marketplace which opened in 2002.

Pole dancing and Gelato the perfect duo

When Ken and Joey Bannister talked to me about their concept for ‘Kwerky Café’ in Simpson Street at Beerwah they mentioned a pole dancing pole.

I am not sure why but I thought that it might have been just an idea that they had put on their list of possibilities, but no - one month since opening their doors to the public the pole is being installed.

They are hoping that by Thursday the installation and securing will be complete and ready for those that know what they are doing to come in and show off their ‘Pole Dancing’ skills.

I am not sure how many locals have undertaken classes and know their way around a pole dancing pole, or might even be a professional, but Joey said she would love you to come in store and give it a go.

Sadly if you really don’t know what you are doing – they will have to say ‘keep of the pole’ as they definitely don’t want to be encouraging anyone to injure themselves.

The pole dancing pole is just one of the quirky elements of the café, with their checkerboard ceiling, crazy chandeliers and ‘very bright décor’ it definitely put a dynamic mark in Simpson Street.

Local McHappy Day success

Glass House Mountains locals have collectively raised $2,160.00 as part of this year’s McHappy Day. The funds raised will enable Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) to continue providing much-needed programs and services for seriously ill children and their families.

In addition to raising funds, volunteers from the community played a big role on the day with Scouts, police and local business owners giving up their time to help collect donations. Celebrities and VIPs across the country were also out in force meeting and greeting customers on the day and collecting donations at over 920 McDonald’s restaurants nationally.

Beerwah Library recognised the work of volunteers, community groups and individuals with the making of over 600 Poppies for the Anzac 100 years Commemoration Display in the Library.

The display was launched with a morning tea and Remembrance Day ceremony last week, with Leo Petrie Beerwah RSL representative, leading the formal ceremony.

Library staff Karen Ferguson and Amanda Neideck shared the amazing story of the 5000 poppies project.

The poppies from this display will join over 100,000 others at Federation Square for Anzac Day next year, which will culminate the national 5000 Poppies project, which originally aimed to have 5000 poppies in Federation Square.

“We had a fantastic turn out (45 people) for the launch of our 5000 poppies project today, which we combined with a mini Remembrance Day service, and morning tea,” said Amanda.

The Great Glass House Mountains If you saw Channel 7’s Great South East vehicles driving around Glass House Mountains last week, they were doing some local filming for a show that will air early next year.

In Flanders Fields Poppies have become a symbol of remembrance because they grew wild on the battlefields of France and Belgium. Almost 100 years after the guns of World War 1 pounded the ground to a swamp, they still grow wild.

Peter Nitschke from Wind and Surf (formally Caloundra Wind and Surf) is celebrating an amazing 40 years in the industry. Opening his first surf shop in 1972, Peter’s passion for all board sports is still vitally apparent today. An avid professional windsurfer, Peter first became aware of the versatility offered by having a sail and board combined whilst travelling overseas in the early 1970’s and from then he was hooked.

Confident the sport would kick off in Australia, Peter along with his brother and business partner, decided to bring the sport to Australia in 1974 and he hasn’t looked back ever since. The last 40 years has seen windsurfing escalate to become one of the most popular water sports in Australia. Peter is a competitive champion who has been repairing boards since 1973 and an accredited Master Sailboard Instructor since 1980. He brings a depth of knowledge to all areas of his business that’s hard to beat.

Whilst still enjoying teaching the sport both on the Sunshine Coast and around the country, these days Peter also custom designs and builds all types of boards with the latest technology from his home workshop in Landsborough. Mad Hatters Melbourne Cup A great day was had by all at our Mad Hatters Melbourne Cup Luncheon.

Each year Club Glass House goes against the trend of the usual Melbourne Cup luncheon and chooses not to have the traditional fashion parade.

This year was no different when head of promotions, Sonya, decided to have a hat making competition.

Lots of laughter and good fun was had by all as they displayed their masterpieces. So many wonderful hats made it hard for our judge to decide on just one.

Some hats looked like they had come straight from the shop, while others got the intended reaction with a good laugh.

After the hat making, diners where treated to a superb buffet prepared by our chief cook Aroha.

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre (VIC) volunteers have regular networking functions, including a sausage sizzle in the park a few weeks ago, (with the boss cooking of course). We try and have a get together every few months for everyone to get to know others that volunteer in the centre. Another recent activity enjoyed by the volunteers was a glorious day out on the water with Caloundra cruises. One of the benefits of volunteering is the opportunities that arise to visit and experience local tourism products/ businesses.

This month, the local Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking night at the centre. We hope this will be the first of many as the centre really is an ideal venue, a good size, centrally located with plenty of seating, and a lovely verandah to enjoy. Having hosted quite a number of groups for various things over the years it will be a pleasure to welcome the Chamber.

With the school holidays nearly upon us, we are gearing up for our busy time.

The centre’s visitor numbers double during this period, requiring a considerable number of maps of the area, and brochures requested. In addition to the hard copy maps and brochures, we also have free wifi in all the information centres on the coast, and even a few wifi lounges in some of the centres, which are popular with travellers and locals.

Now in its 11th year ‘Movember’ has seen plenty of attempts at growing a moustache in aid of raising funds for Men’s Health.

And if you drop into Burson Auto Parts in Team Burson Beerwah Bill, Nick, Dylan and Graham Beerwah you will see four of their team giving the growing a moustache a red hot crack.

Graham Croft, Bill Kendell, Nick Black and Dylan McCartney have all taken up the challenge.

Graham was involved last year with a group of fellas outside of work, so this year he decided to enlist some of his workmates and together they are hoping to raise over $1,000.00.

GCNews dropped in to see how the ‘mo bros’ were going mid-month and at this stage Bill has the thickest result, and when asked about his success he put it all down to the consumption of beer. Apparently it must contain a secret ingredient that assists with hair growth?

Dylan has put in some additional efforts with shaping his mo – which from my vast experience and consulting the movember website I think is called the trucker – so it is definitely a ‘tough mo style’.

Nick’s mo is clearly taking its time, but all the signs for success are in place.

Local NBN Towers Action Group Meeting and Concert The Maleny-Witta-ReesvilleConondale Residents Tower Action Group is planning a series of public information events for the last week of November to increase community awareness of the NBN Co plan to put up to seven microwave towers across our district's landscape.

On Wednesday, November 26, residents' groups will hold a set of two public meetings at 1.00pm and at 7.00pm in the Maleny Community Centre Verandah Room (downstairs) to show a power point presentation on proposed locations of towers around the district and a DVD on the effects of Wireless tower transmissions on health.

There will also be talks and displays of background material on the campaign to push for Optical Fibre Cable in our area.

Both meetings will last two hours and residents can get a full understanding of what NBN plans for the district and what are the better alternatives proposed by our local community groups.

On Saturday, November 29, there will be a Free Concert Event in the park by the Maleny Library with local musicians and performers as well as three to four speakers on the proposed NBN tower roll-out and what the community puts forward as alternatives. All performers will be giving their time for free and raising awareness of the need for alternatives to Microwave Towers

The Calvery Lutheran Ladies fellowship invited the community along to attend a special fundraising morning tea to assist the Sunshine Linus group.

Sunshine Linus is a 100% volunteer non-profit organisation that is in its third year of operation here on the Sunshine Coast.

It is our mission to provide quilts and other comforts to the needy community on the Sunshine Coast.

We endeavour to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children and adults who are seriously ill, traumatised or otherwise in need, through the gift of new homemade comforts such as quilts and blankets, and other handmade items, lovingly created by volunteers. Our first meeting took place in June 2010.

We also provide much needed support to hospital wards, oncology units, maternity nurseries, nursing homes and care associations such as Foster Parents and Special Schools.

Karl McManus Foundation Contributed by Lesley McLeod We have finally begun Kids for Life, the Volunteer Arm of the Karl McManus Foundation, which aims to raise the funds necessary to complete vital research at the tick borne diseases unit of the Sydney University. This research will enable a correct blood test to be developed that will pick up cases of Australia’s Lyme Like disease, which are currently going undetected by our GP’s. Once these blood tests are established it will mean early detection and immediate treatments for those infected - essentially a cure.

If treated early in the infection, the disease cannot manifest, and 20,000 Australian lives will be saved every year.

We are looking for 20 volunteers to donate two hours of their time at a ‘Kids for Life’ sausage sizzle at Beerwah Woolworths on Saturday, November 29. More information can be found online by following the links from Volunteering Queensland linkki.volunteeringqld.org.au.

There is a new pictorial display on Paediatric Lyme going up at the Beerwah Library this week to create awareness for parents of children with ADD,OCD and ODD and behavioural problems.

This information will also help teachers to become familiar with the diseases presentations, many of which will cause a disruptive influence in their classes. This information will provide some understanding in how to assist.

Once the Kids for Life website is up and running over the next couple of months, educators will be able to request information packs which will be school specific and help the children infected to receive a better education. Information packs for medical practitioners about Tick borne disease profiles are also being developed.

We are currently looking for corporate sponsorships to donate muchneeded money to this worthy cause. Lyme disease is a global public health problem and the current blood tests are completely inadequate.

Beerburrum Children’s Christmas Party

By Jarrah and Alyssa The Year 3 and 4’s were so excited! They were going on their first ever camp to Tunnel Ridge Ranch. The Year 3’s went on a scavenger hunt and tried to find as many things on the list as possible. They had a great time. Then the Year 3 and 4’s got put into groups to rotate through three activities, canoeing, leather work and archery.

It was so much fun! After that we went on the rope swing where we swung into the dam. But soon enough it was all over and we had to say goodbye to Tunnel Ridge Ranch.

We all had an awesome time!

Archery was so much fun! We were in teams and tried to get as many points as possible.

In canoeing we got to go in groups of three and paddled around the dam. Then we went for a swim for 15 minutes. In leather work we got to make bracelets, key rings and book marks by pressing shapes into the leather. The food was also really good! Then unfortunately the Year 3’s had to go home. That night the Year 4’s had a campfire and stories and singing, then watched a movie. Early the next morning we went for a bushwalk and made a sign out of leaves on the

Time to shine at GCCC

Remembrance Day 2014 Beerwah The Year 6 and 7 Captains of Beerwah State School laid wreaths at the Remembrance Day Ceremony as one of their last official duties for 2014. The Band and Choir from Beerwah SS take part in the ceremony each year.

All year Glasshouse Country Christian College students have been working hard for house points through sporting triumphs, spelling bees and community work. At the end of the year the final challenge is a talent contest.

The senior students danced and performed their turn, but the real stars shone during the primary talent quest.

Prep student Charlotte Westaway came first in the junior primary for her rendition of a song from Frozen. Coming a strong second was another Prep student, Isabella Buckland.

Isabella gave a fluent and animated reading of a section of the Old Testament which left the audience speechless.

The performances were judged by preparation and polish, originality, and connection with the audience.

News in Brief Maleny RSL sounding great

As a result of the generosity of the Maleny Singers, who have donated sound equipment they no longer require, the Maleny RSL ceremonies are sounding great.

Maleny RSL President, Chris Brooker said he is pleased that when the RSL hold services such as last week’s Remembrance Day or the recent Beersheba Day service that they can rely on their new equipment to provide excellent sound quality.

Impact Youth Beerwah’s Big Event

On the Sh#tbox Rally road again

In 2014 GCNews reported on the team ‘The Close Shaves’ adventurers preparing for, and undertaking the Sh#tbox Rally, travelling the 4250kms from Perth to Darwin in seven days.

After missing out on finishing the rally by one day, Steve Graves has decided to have another crack at the event this year, his daughter Bronwyn will be his co-driver.

Next year the rally travels from Canberra to Townsville via the Birdsville Track and the Simpson Desert starting on May 9 and finishing on May 15.

Steve reckons this doesn’t sound as daunting as last year’s journey from Perth to Darwin.

“Hopefully we will make it into Townsville!” he said.

They are getting started on their fundraising and already have a couple of sausage sizzles booked in at Masters at Morayfield, the first one is on January 3.

Steve and Bronnie will be using Steve’s old ‘1993 Ford Ute’ on the trip this year, fortunately it meets the entry criteria of being under a thousand dollars in value.

With all the funds raised going to cancer – it is a great initiative which the organisers describe as more of a ‘challenge than a race’.

Those adverts acknowledge that residents have genuine concerns about the health and safety of radio communications.

And NBN Co says it is dedicated to having an honest conversation with the community about the topic.

If it is to be genuine then NBN Co has to acknowledge that the genuine conversations must be about Microwave Towers in our districts and they must use the words … nowhere in the adverts does it mention either. And NBN Co must use up-to-date international science research on safety standards.

Maleny and Hinterland Residents Want NBN!

However, they want: • an NBN of the same standard that will be offered to Maleny and other township residents • an NBN through the use of copper cable and fibre optic cables • an NBN service that is 'safe' NBN Co proposes to provide the service using about seven Microwave Towers of about 30 metres in height around our area.

• This microwave service is being provided by a government agency to a timeline • This microwave service has not been proven safe for humans and wildlife • Electrohypersensitivity (EHS) is already present within our community

• A Class 2B carcinogen is more than a 'cup of coffee' (as quoted from the NBN advert). DDT, Heptachlor, lead, chloroform, dry cleaning fluids, bitumen, diesel, and naphthalene are just a few of over 200 chemicals in the Class 2B list

These are the two words that NBN will not use….

These words will awaken and frighten people to make them aware of what is being imposed upon them by NBN. The local group seeks 'Towerless NBN for the Maleny Hinterlands'. We want everyone to have NBN at the same speed that is being proposed for the central area of Maleny.

The imposition of towered microwave delivery by NBN to the hinterlands is of concern for at least the following reasons: • concern about human and wildlife safety and health - there are already electro sensitive residents in the area • reduction in property values around the towers - the question of tower location is already being asked of real estate agents • lower quality of service than that to be offered in the Maleny central area - maximum of 25 Mbps versus 100 Mbps in Maleny • impact on tourism – it is imperative to retain the towerless environment As time is running out to retain the ‘towerless environment’ on the escarpment overlooking the Glasshouse Mountains, it should be considered as a priority request that everyone contacts NBN, the local politicians and the Federal Minister for Communications, please.

For some weeks a magpie has been visiting our verandah in search of food, it seems quite tame.

It has an embossed metal ring around one of its legs. Who would have tagged the bird and for what purpose? Perhaps one of your readers will be able to enlighten us.

It’s a strange thing to see that NBN Co has dollops of money to spend and toss in over $3,000 to take out advertising in four local papers (and spend thousands more on mailouts), yet can't say what they will really do in the Maleny district or elsewhere, where they propose to put in broadband towers across our landscape.

What's missing from their recent full page adverts are two words - guess? Yes - the words 'Microwaves' and 'Towers'. Not once in the whole body of those adverts is to be found what it’s really all about - microwave towers to distribute broadband. I reckon they take an oath in NBN or Ericsson to not say the word microwaves in a public meeting, or in an advert.

Why? It’s an unsettling word associated with ill-health and considerable public concern and it doesn't go down well when you're trying to erect 30 / 40 metre towers to transmit microwave frequencies.

The major exposure to the public from microwaves comes from mobile phones, base stations, wireless appliances, 'blue tooth' equipment, and WiFi. Most early health research work (1970s / 80s) focused on occupational exposure of military personnel.

The first significant report (Sadcikova, 1974) describing 'microwave sickness' showed symptoms including fatigue, headaches, palpitations, insomnia, skin reactions, impotence and altered blood pressure.

It's likely the effect is cumulative rather than instantaneous and cascade effects (where one reaction triggers other effects in your cells) are important. This is known as electrical hypersensitivity (EHS), but NBN won't write on that.

Mooloolah Art students work to go on show

by Tom McAulay, described as a delightful collection of timeless depictions of station life in the outback, from November 18 – 30.

From cattle mustering to heading to the races, these are works conveying the harsh reality of life on the land and a few more humourous moments.

Naomi Rodgers of Mooloolah Valley is one of a group of Diploma students from the new Nambour Visual Arts department exhibiting artworks at the Old Ambulance Station on Friday, November 21.

Entitled ‘Exposure’, the exhibition features work from 14 students and includes painting, sculpture and mixed media assemblage.

The graduating exhibition will be officially opened on the Friday evening, and the exhibition will continue on Saturday.

“The exhibition is not only the result of a lot of hard work and commitment, but also acts as a stepping stone to our professional careers,” said Naomi.

One of the exhibitors, Marcus Dunn from Buderim, added that the course was hugely supportive of different styles and skill levels.

“It is really exciting to see it all come together in this graduating exhibition in a unique venue like the Old Ambulance Station,” he said.

Art teacher Michael Ciavarella commented on the high quality of the work in the show.

“It is all really good and who's to know that you might be seeing work for the first time from a future art star,” he said.

East Coast TAFE general manager Mr Paul Wilson will officially open the exhibition at 6.30pm on Friday, November 21.

The Old Ambulance Station can be found at 80 Howard Street, Nambour. There is plenty of car parking available nearby.

This event will be followed one week later with an exhibition by graduating Advanced Diploma students.

Happenings Things 2 Do A Festival of Carols

Horse Race Night

The Buderim Male Choir will herald in the festive season with a rousing rendition of our favourite carols at their regular ‘Morning Melodies’ concert on Thursday, December 4. On this occasion the choir will be supported by members of the Sunshine Coast Brass and the audience will be encouraged to join in some community singing. This morning concert is certain to be a special pre-Christmas event with the program designed for our more senior citizens.

The concert will be held in the Buderim Memorial Hall commencing at 10.00am with a free morning tea. Admission is only $10.00. Tickets will be available at the door but reservations for groups may be arranged by phoning Rod 5456 4473.

Christmas Fair

The Maleny Arts and Crafts Group will hold their annual Christmas Fair from Friday, December 5 to Sunday, December 7 at the MACG Workshop, Maleny Showgrounds.

Entry is free and the fair will be open 9.00am – 4.00pm across the three days. All items are available for sale and are all made by local artisans. There is the opportunity to purchase unique, locally produced gifts for friends and family from the many quality homeware and gift items that will be on sale. Matinee and evening screening of Belle

Belle, an opulent costume drama set in the 18th century at the time of the abolition of slavery, will screen twice in Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, November 22 – a matinee at 3.00pm (doors open at 2.30pm) and in the evening at 7.15pm (doors open for dinner at 6.00pm).

The cast is led by Tom Wilkinson as Lord Mansfield, the chief lord justice of the day, charged with vital legal and social change. Dido grows up alongside Lady Elizabeth Murray, but expectations for the future of the two young women are very different. Mandolins in Brisbane return to Maleny

This year, Marissa Carroll and Joel Woods will perform in concert a selection of works from their newly released album, ‘Personal Favourites for Mandolin and Guitar’. Marissa Carroll is the lead mandolinist and soloist for both Brisbane Mandolins and Queensland Mandolin Ensemble, and Joel Woods is the Musical Director / Conductor and lead guitarist, for Brisbane Mandolins and Queensland Mandolin Ensemble.

Their upcoming concert will feature them performing some of their favourite works, there is something for every listener in this concert, with the program spanning across 300 years of music written for the mandolin and guitar. However, the amount of income you draw is treated favourably due to your Centrelink ‘deductible amount’.

The deductible amount is the portion of your income payment that is not assessed as income

by Centrelink, and is offered in recognition of your income payments consisting of some of your own capital being paid back to you.

Effective from January 1, 2015, new rules will mean any new Account Based Pensions will have the Centrelink deeming rates applied, rather than applying the deductible amount. T his means the amount of income you elect to draw becomes totally irrelevant in terms of calculating your eligibility for income support payments.

What are the deeming rates/rules?

Under these rules your financial assets are ‘deemed’ to earn specified rates of return, regardless of the actual earnings you receive.

Financial assets include cash, bank deposits, shares, managed funds, insurance bonds, outstanding loans and amounts gifted in excess of allowable limits.

If you have reached Age Pension age, amounts held in the superannuation accumulation phase are also counted as financial assets, and are therefore subject to the assets test and deemed under the income test.

The current deeming thresholds and rates are:Single

First $48,000 @ Above $48,000 @ 2% pa 3.5% pa

Couple

First $79,600 @ Above $79,600 @ 2% pa 3.5% pa

Case study Jack and Diane have financial assets totalling $450,000. This is made up of cash in the bank, term deposits and some shares. They are both 65-years-old and they own their own home.

Option 1 – make no change to their financial assets In this instance, Jack and Diane’s total financial assets are deemed (per table above).

Therefore, ($79,600 @ 2%) + ($370,400 @ 3.5%) = $14,556 pa of deemed income, regardless of actual returns.

Option 2 – establish account based pensions prior to 1st January 2015 In this instance, Jack and Diane retain $90,000 in their bank account, and then each contributes $180,000 to superannuation on 1st December 2014.

They then use their superannuation contributions to commence an Account Based Pension each, electing to draw the minimum income payment of 5% ($9,000 pa each).

They will qualify for a Centrelink deductible amount, which is calculated by dividing the Account Based Pension purchase price by their respective life expectancies, as follows:Jack: $180,000/18.54 = $9,708 pa. Jack has elected to draw the minimum income of $9,000,

Diane: $180,000/21.62 = $8,325. Diane has elected to draw the minimum income of $9,000, therefore she will have $675 pa of Centrelink assessable income.

Because Jack and Diane have retained $90,000 in their bank account, this will be subject to Centrelink’s deeming rates, as follows:($79,600 @ 2%) + ($10,400 @ 3.5%) = $1,956 pa This deemed income ($1,965) PLUS Diane’s Account Based Pension assessable income ($675) means Jack and Diane have combined assessable Centrelink income of $2,631 pa.

You can see that by investing in Account Based Pensions, Jack and Diane have reduced their Centrelink assessable income by $11,925 pa.

Remembrance Day

On November 11, I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony in Beerwah organised by the Beerwah-Peachester RSL. It was pleasing to see the great turn-out and the fantastic performance by the Beerwah State School choir and band.

Remembrance Day is such an important time for us to remember the courage and sacrifice of all who have served in times of war and conflict in order to protect us and our country.

I have had the pleasure of attending the Beerwah State High School and Glasshouse Country Christian College awards nights recently and I continue to be impressed with the talented and all-round impressive students in the region.

Electorate Christmas card competition

Congratulations to Miss Hunter Eyre of Delaneys Creek State School who won first prize in the 2014 Glass House Christmas card competition.

Second Prize went to Lucy Sanders of Peachester State School and third prize was Olivia Knight from Montville State School. This year we asked students to illustrate their ‘Christmas Wish’ and I must say how impressed I was with the standard of entries and the amount of kids who demonstrated their desire for world peace or cures for diseases. The standard was so high this year I have even awarded four runner up entries and at least one highly commended from each school. Well done to the kids and thanks to the many schools that entered again this year. Look out for the Glass House electorate Christmas card in your mail boxes at the end of this month.

Cheaper Fares

At the start of November the LNP Government announced the first ever state wide reduction to public transport fares in Queensland’s history, with passengers now paying 5% less for fares.

Almost 22,000 Queenslanders voted in the two week survey (August 31 – September 14) – and 74% of those voted in favour of the cheaper fares.

I dropped into Palmwoods train station last week to share the good news and all of the commuters I spoke to were thrilled to know they will have that little but back in their pockets each week.

Beerwah’s makeover This week Beerwah celebrated the official launch of Beerwah Village (thanks must go to our resident celebrities Terri and Robert Irwin from Australia Zoo for showing their support), and I must say I’m quite impressed to see how it has all come together.

While modern shops have gone in like Target Country, the Coffee Club and IGA, the blending of rustic elements and feature artwork in Simpson Street itself also reflects and works well with some of our iconic stores like Beerwah Books and Bits.

These celebrations follow on from the recent completion and reveal of the multi-million-dollar Simpson Street upgrade, of which I’m proud to report the State Government contributed a total of $1.07 million towards.

The State awarded Council $600,000 through the Cycle Network Local Government Grants to deliver a 650metre shared path from KilcoyBeerwah Road to Pine Camp Road as well as $470,000 through the Local Government grants and Subsidies Program for the overall project.

I’m always proud to see the State invest in such worthwhile and important projects and I hope all of us are embracing the new-look Beerwah.

Doesn’t it make you proud to be a part of such a vibrant close-knit community? Beerwah is a great town with great schools, a pool, golf club, local businesses and shops and public transport right on our doorstep.

Well done to all of the shop-owners who patiently persisted throughout all of these works. I hope you all see the fruits of your hard work now pay off.

2014 Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

This year I’m pleased to support the Salvation Army Caloundra branch for their annual Christmas appeal.

We all know the saying, ‘Thank God for the Salvos’, but it certainly rings true at Christmas time, when a lot of people do it particularly tough.

My office is acting as a drop-off point where people can donate new toys and in-date, non-perishable food items to go towards Christmas Hampers. Ideally, if items could be donated by December 5 that would be appreciated.

Part 4 of the story of the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Mr Fullerton’s address continued: “The race meeting was a success and another was held some time later which was also a success but ended in tragedy when a horse and rider crashed into a tree – both horse and rider were killed. This ended horse racing in Glasshouse Mountains.”

Race Meeting Fatality A race meeting was held at Glasshouse Mountains on Monday (June 5). With fine weather, a fair attendance and 5 bookmakers fielding all seemed rosy, with the public winning on the whole and the Club certain to show a fair profit on the day.

Unfortunately, however, in the Second Class Hack race a young man named Frank Butler, who lived at Peachester, was killed. There were four starters and his mount (Midnight), soon after the start and running last, seemed to run wide of the track at

the first turn, hit the outside rail and crashed into a big gum tree. The rider’s head hit the tree and he was killed instantly; the horse died about 20 minutes afterwards. The unfortunate man leaves a wife and 3 children … the fatality brought everything to a sad ending for the day.

The newspaper article did, however, go onto list the results of the races, including those for the Second Class Hack Race!

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church Now days it seems if you disagree with someone over a lifestyle choice based upon your religious conviction, instead of talking about things or agreeing to disagree nicely, people label you bigoted, arrogant, exclusive, dogmatic, and homophobic etc.

As a result Christians are often regarded as intolerant. Intolerant religiously, since they affirm the words of Jesus that ‘no one comes to the Father except through me.’ (John 14:6) but also intolerant ethically, because they refuse to approve any and all behaviors as morally good.

Apparently, our society regards the act of telling people they’re wrong as a form of hatred. It is never explained how the charge does not apply equally in the other direction, since those who make this charge are telling Christians they are wrong.

Needless to say, such a situation can discourage Christians. We might be tempted to despair and think that the church is entering into dark days.

It’s helpful to remember this is not the first time Christians have received such labels. Indeed, Christians were accused of being haters and intolerant almost from the beginning.

Pliny the Younger, Roman governor of Bythinia writing c.111-113, was frustrated that the Christians would not ‘invoke the gods.’ In a letter to Emperor Trajan, he lamented their ‘stubbornness and unyielding obstinacy.’ In other words, he was angry over their intolerance.

Pliny was upset because Christianity had emptied the Roman temples and no one was buying the temple sacrifices anymore. In other words, they were losing money.

To fix the problem, Pliny decided to force Christians to worship the pagan gods and curse Christ. If they refused, they were put to death. It is interesting to note that Pliny, while torturing these Christians, acknowledged their high moral standards: ‘[Christians] bind themselves by oath, not to some crime, but not to commit fraud, theft, or adultery, not falsify their trust, nor to refuse to return a trust when called upon to do so.’

Apparently, intolerance of the Roman gods was enough of a reason to kill Christians, despite their good lives.

In the late first century, Nero, liked to kill Christians by covering them with animal skins and releasing the dogs on them, nailing them to crosses or burning them alive to light up his garden parties at night.

The Christians were killed for their ‘hatred against mankind’ i.e. they didn’t pray to the Roman gods or approve of the practices that went along with them.

One of the reasons Jesus, the founder of Christianity and the model we are meant to follow, was crucified was because he told people they were wrong - and should start going God’s way. If it happened to Jesus, it will happen to his followers.

Fossil records show the Daintree Pine has been around approximately 50 million years since the time of Gondwana. Today it is found in only a handful of small sites in the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park of FNQ. The Daintree Pine is not actually a pine at all but a primitive member of the Casuarina family. The female flowers are red to pink and they are followed by fruits resembling Casuarina cones. It is a very attractive bushy plant which maintains a lovely conical shape that provides great habitat for small nesting birds. This is Australia’s answer to a Christmas tree and it grows beautifully here in SE QLD approximately 3 to 6m high x 2m wide, preferring full sun to semi shade in a well drained situation. It makes a wonderful pot specimen for many years.

Sunshine Coast and Maleny Judo Club success at championships The competitors pictured from left are They all won Gold Medals at the recent Qld Judo Championships in Brisbane. The boys all had an outstanding day and demonstrated good sportsmanship and courage throughout the day. This is an excellent result for the Sunshine Coast Region. Four competitors from the region won five Gold medals with Harry Cauley contesting two age groups, winning the u17yo and u20yo under 60kg divisions. You cannot get much better than five out of four. All of the boys are now training for the Australian Judo Championships. Two local ladies recently competed in the Pan Pacific Masters Games held on the Gold Coast from November 1 - 9.

Desley Palmer and Eve O’Mara (pictured) both played women’s touch football, and both ladies playing in teams much younger than their years.

After dealing with Gold Coast storms at night and the heat of the day, both ladies teams found themselves playing for a bronze medal position. Desley’s team (Margareta’s) unfortunately lost a hard fought play off 4 - 0.

Eve’s team (ECB Chicks) dug deep to win the bronze medal 7 - 2. This was the 8th game that the team had played within 72 hours.

Both ladies would like to thank their team mates for a great games tournament and look forward to competing again in future years.

Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club

Contributed by Jill Forster The 2014/15 cricket season commenced, Saturday, October 4. This season Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club has fielded four teams in the Sunshine Coast Junior Competition – Under 10, 12 and 14 and 16 and four teams in the Senior Competition – Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The Under 10 games are played under lights on Friday nights at various venues around the Sunshine Coast, with Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club being host venue, holding four games at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Ground on Friday, October 31.

We also have 15 enthusiastic five to eightyear-olds participating and having fun in the Milo in2CRICKET (previously Have-A-Go) program. The club would like to thank Bernie McMahon who is again running the sessions for the program. The Milo in2CRICKET program is beneficial to the future of our junior cricket with nine members of our Under 10 team this season having previously participated in the program.

The committee is extremely pleased to announce that our major junior sponsor, Hy-Tec Concrete, has renewed their sponsorship for all the club’s junior teams for another season with this being their 7th season. The committee is very excited to welcome Maleny Apex Club as the major senior sponsor for this season which will see them sponsor the club’s Division 1, 2, 3 and 4 teams.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly With such great weather, it is wonderful to see so many ladies on the course soaking up the sunshine. We had 62 girls out to play a two Ball Ambrose for trophies generously donated by Glasshouse Country Meats.

The lucky pair who will sample the delights of Michelle and Murray’s butcher shop are Heather Henn and Brenda Briese.

Unfortunately, there was a bit of a glitch in the recording of the results of the day and I can’t give you the actual scores.

However, these great mates came in with the best score of the day. Runners up were Rosemary Collins and Fay Barry and they will also be heading off to Glasshouse Country meats in the near future. The second runners up were Betty Howe and Jill Downes.

Nearest to the pins went to Fay Barry on number 2, Marie Norton on 5 and Denise Kirkby on the 16th.

First Division on 18 went to Sue Greentree, while 2nd division went to Faye Raven. The ball rundown went to 72 Winners Heather and Brenda 1/2. Thanks again to Murray and Michelle for sponsoring the day. Only three weeks until our Christmas Breakup party, so better dust off the tinsel ladies.

As a butcher is shooing a dog from his shop, he sees $10.00 and a note in the dog’s mouth, reading: "10 lamb chops, please." Amazed, the butcher takes the money, puts a bag of chops in the dog's mouth, and quickly closes his shop.
