ast week I caught up with three lovely women who are committed to raising funds for the Cancer Council in very different ways!

So you will have seen 69-year-old, Beerwah local Karen Parkin on the front page whose story just amazed me.

Over the years I have seen hundreds of people who have been brave and shaved for a cause – but I have never seen someone with so much beautiful hair do it.

Next Saturday when Karen goes under the clippers she will be sacrificing over one metre of hair all in the name of a good cause.

Later in the week Bronwyn Graves, a former Beerwah High School student, dropped into the office with her friend Holly Butler to let me know that they are participating in next year’s Sh#tbox Rally. The challenge will see the 20 and 19 year olds take on a drive of 3500kms on outback roads from Mackay to Hobart in a vehicle worth no more than $1000.00.

What struck me as while there might be a big age gap between Karen and the girls, they are united in their determination to have fun, and do something which is all about making a positive difference in other people’s lives.

Following all of the tragedies that have happened over the week in Paris, it is nice to be reminded just how many good, generous and caring people there are, not just in our community, but across the world.

Local News Roys Road upgrade improves connection to Highway Construction on a major $1.1 million upgrade to Roys Road will start this month, making it easier and safer for motorists to travel between Beerwah and the Bruce Highway.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said council would widen the road and improve the road surface.

“This upgrade will improve access to the new Bells Creek Road interchange, making it easier to reach the Bruce Highway,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Improved connectivity to the highway is vital for our local communities and this project will provide that, as well as catering for forecast increased traffic volumes.”

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the upgrade would connect with previous council improvements at Mawsons Road.

“In this stage of work we will upgrade around 1.1km of Roys Road from the intersection at Mawsons Road to just past the old forestry depot,” Cr Baberowski said.

“This is a solid start on progressively upgrading what is going to become a future arterial road between Beerwah, the Bruce Highway and Aura

at Caloundra South.

“This road will ultimately provide an alternative and slightly quicker route for residents and make it easier for visitors to enjoy everything the Glass House area has to offer.

“Traffic controls will be in place during construction and while council will do everything it can to avoid traffic delays, some will be unavoidable due to safety and work flow reasons.

“Work is expected to be complete in April, weather permitting.

“Council thanks motorists for their patience during construction of this important project.”

The girls have decided on the team name B1 and B2 and they are keen to get their hands on their very own Sh#tbox vehicle early in the new year.

The owner of North Lakes Hyundai / Grand Prix Mazda has promised the girls to donate a trade in vehicle to the value of $1000, the only criteria for the girls is that it will be a manual (however not necessarily in banana yellow).

While Bronwyn has ditched her dad as a team mate, the 20-year-old seems very pleased to have him on board to help with the fundraising efforts required to enter the rally.

Initially they need to raise $4000.00 to guarantee their spot in the ‘challenge’.

Forest not freeways Despite several meetings between local community conservation groups and the Department of Main Roads and Transport (TMR), the Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest Group claims that a great lack of confidence still exists in TMR’s commitment to protecting the Steve Irwin Way Forest.

Even though environmental factors remain a high priority for TMR, they have told the group that they are not prepared to relocate the controversial interchange footprint to reduce the impacts on the Beerwah State Forest to the greatest extent possible, and they fear that once contractors are engaged, further opportunity for community consultation will be closed.

Wayne Reid from the Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest Group is not convinced this process will yield a good outcome for the forest.

“As we’ve stated over and over again, since the beginning of our campaign in 2011, any intrusion into this already fragmented and fragile ecosystem will directly result in destruction of listed species habitat protected by law,” he said.

According to Wayne, TMR stated to the group that there was no State or Federal statutory requirements for environmental approvals.

“From reading the TMR environment reports we’re well aware of ‘memorandums of understanding’ between the Environment Department and TMR. We assume this allows the TMR process to sidestep some safeguards required when clearing protected forests,” he said.

“The Queensland Environment Department has stated the change of tenure has been ‘given in principle’ despite no approvals being granted from that department, or the Federal Department of Environment, which governs protection of endangered species.

“TMR give the impression of minimising impacts, but obviously they aren’t proposing to avoid the forest. At this stage, the Environment Department seems willing to sacrifice high value public State Forest.

“We’re very concerned that if the Queensland government allows the change of tenure, what was promised to become National Park will be swiftly bulldozed,” he said.

When the group asked what measures will be taken to retain dozens of ancient trees in the proposed footprint, TMR responded that, if possible, they will not remove any of the old growth trees.

Wayne asserts that, after observing clearing for the highway upgrade further north, it would be impossible to avoid damaging old growth trees with TMR’s planned road layout given to contractors.

“The only way contractors could guarantee no old trees will be touched is by avoiding the forest altogether. That’s what the community and the Sunshine Coast voting constituents want.

“I have no doubt the late Steve Irwin would be very unhappy with the Palaszczuk government’s behaviour, especially when there is the potential here for a design that would revitalise this area, showcasing the indigenous history, the pioneering legacy and the unique environment surrounding the Steve Irwin Way,” he added.

“There’s potential here to do us proud, but if this destructive plan goes ahead we will be shamed as a national and international disgrace,” lamented Wayne.

The Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest Group is planning an awareness and fundraiser event on Saturday, November 21 called ‘Forests not Freeways’.

The event, from 5.00pm until late at the Crystal Waters Café Conondale, will highlight great local Sunshine Coast acts and street performers. There will be food, a kid’s area and great raffle prizes. Entry is by donation.

Hair today, gone Saturday Local music teacher Karen Parkin has spent the last seven years growing her rather long locks to over a metre, when she decided to organise a fundraising event to honour two of her friends who have lost the battle with cancer, and others that are fighting the disease.

To mark her 70th birthday this year, Karen decided that as part of the event losing her locks was a great way to raise $5,000.00 for Cancer Council Queensland and has organised an event at Beerwah Community Hall on Saturday, November 21 from 1.00pm – 5.00pm.

Karen has a minimum of grey in her hair and the colour is 100% natural, which means she will also be able to donate her hair for use in two wigs for children with Alopecia.

As part of Saturday’s event, she will also be auctioning off the opportunity for who will have the honour of being in control of the clippers, and she is happy for this to go to the highest bidder!

Being a music teacher, not surprisingly there will be live music at the event, as well as afternoon tea and a raffle.

Medicinal Cannabis Conversation The Medical Cannabis Users Association of Australia (MCUA) are hosting a conversation at Beerwah Community Hall on Sunday, December 6 at 11.00am. The workshop will be discussing medicinal cannabis and community health, focussing on natural preventative medicine.

The Medical Cannabis Users Association of Australia was set up in the winter of 2014 specifically to give medical cannabis users a collective voice for lobbying.

One of the aims of the group is to eventually achieve the full repeal of cannabis prohibition and in the medicinal context the goal is to include grow rights for all people who chose to use cannabis as a front-line treatment for curative or for preventative health or medicinal purposes.

Structure to tower over mountains Last week, an application was lodged with council for the construction of a 56m high tower on behalf of NBN Co at 2001 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains.

The proposed tower is part of the national broadband network wireless microwave radio frequency system that NBN Co are looking to install in areas which will not be receiving the superior quality fibre optic broadband network.

The tower – located on the grounds of the Glasshouse Mountains Camping Ground, adjacent to the Cobb and Co Teamsters Hall of Fame – is opposite the historic Bankfoot House and 260m from residential houses.

More importantly, it falls in the centre of the National Heritage listed Glass House Mountains scenic complex, and is 2km from Mt Ngungun, 2.5km from Mt Coonowrin, 2.5km from Mt Tibrogargan and 3.5km from Mt Beerwah.

The application is seeking a material change of use for the land to allow a tower and compound facility to be constructed.

The plans show that a lattice tower is proposed, onto which four antenna will be mounted to send and receive radio frequencies used to deliver the wireless broadband network.

NBN Co have proposed a number of such towers across the landscape, with a number of them at Maleny, Bald Knob, Beerwah and Peachester coming under significant scrutiny and community disapproval.

The development application for the Beerwah proposal (behind the Recycling Centre) has already been rejected by Sunshine Coast Council due to negative visual scenic amenity and environmental issues.

According to the development application for the Glass House tower, the structure will be over three times the height of the surrounding vegetation.

An application document also sets out that one other site was investigated, but rejected by NBN Co on environmental grounds, leaving the chosen site as the only other option considered.

The chosen site is also adjacent to the Mt Beerwah Road quarry and in the vicinity of a high voltage transmission network. NBN Co cite that the tower is perfect for the locality as it is already visually highly ‘modified’ by the quarry and the high voltage stanchions.

With the whole region being famed for its visual beauty, some may say that a 56m tower close to four major National Heritage listed mountains may not be consistent with the image that the region is trying to foster, both nationally and internationally, however NBN Co beg to differ in their development application.

They say that the development is ‘generally consistent’ with the scenic amenity code in the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, and the lattice structure of the tower allows for ‘views through the structures’.

NBN Co argue further that ‘as the area already has been highly modified, the extra negative visual impact caused by their proposed tower won’t make it any worse than it already is’.

When asked whether a community information meeting would be held for the residents of Glass House Mountains – the same courtesy NBN Co extended to Maleny, Beerwah and Peachester, a spokesperson from NBN Co said no.

Member for Caloundra and Shadow Health Minister Mark McArdle has ditched his razor blade and clean-cut image this month to grow a full beard in support of Movember.

Mr McArdle has registered as a Mo Bro to raise funds and shine the spotlight on sensitive men’s health topics including prostate and testicular cancers and mental health.

“The rate of men diagnosed with this cancer has grown by more than 50% over the past 30 years and the reason for this is not known.”

‘Spirit to Spirit’ returns

By Sonia Clark On Saturday, December 12, everyone is welcome to attend the ‘Spirit to Spirit’ - bush tucker and healing event that returns to Nungeena (60 Streak Road, Glass House Mountains) from 10.00am until 4.30pm.

The day features a number of workshops and talks that are included in the admission fee.

Aboriginal Artist Nicky Newley-Guivarra will be running art workshops for both kids and adults on the day and there will be guest Aboriginal women speakers from across the state delivering informative and transformative discussions, including well known gourmet chef and bush tucker expert Dale Chapman.

The theme for this event is ‘bringing the family together’. The indigenous way is to stay connected to country and family, and the event will focus on some of the ways people can stay connected as part of the greater family of life.

One of the key organisers, Leanne Phillips says this was their second ‘Spirit to Spirit’ event at Nungeena.“We will strive to deliver even more at this event. It should be a spectacular day!”

The day will celebrate Aboriginal bush tucker and healing, both traditional and contemporary.

Aboriginal healing sessions will be available for $25.00. There will also be a ‘Bush Tucker cafe’ and a jarjums (kids – both big and small) activity program running during the day.

Products and healing available on the day and entry is just $10.00 per person (tax deductable) or $40.00, for a family of five.

Peachester CWA Update

Contributed by Coral Beutel (President) Student work - Cath Howitt and Coral Beutel presented the students of Peachester State School (who received prizes from Nambour North Coast Division judging) with their awards. Three entries went on to the state conference with the Year 2 colouring-in coming second in the state, congratulations to all that entered.

70th birthday - what a wonderful 70th birthday celebrated in the Peachester Hall on October 16, exactly 70 years from the first meeting.

It was worth all the hard work to see the joy on so many faces as old friends met up. With 90 people attending the hall was filled with laughter. Thank you to Helen Page for the photos from the history archives.

Special thanks to Joy Hodgens who was a former president of our branch and helped all day Wednesday with photos and her advice. The food was great – thanks to Pasta D’Vine and Beerwah Bakery. The whole day flowed along with Kev Wrayford entertaining us with his delightful singing. The girls from the school cooking class cleared the tables and washed up for a big donation. Thanks to Val and Michelle for your help and last but not least thanks to our members.

Conference - was held in Gympie Civic Centre, a great venue with over 400 ladies from all over the state. Joan, Margaret and Coral were Peachester’s representatives. Guest speakers over the week were ladies who spoke about women’s health, prostate cancer, organ donating, and ICPA. It was sad to hear what the Isolated Children are missing out on. An amount of $22,000 was donated to the flying doctor. Heather Brennon told us about the work ACWW is doing on Tuvlau Island which was devastated in the cyclone, they're building homes and providing each one with a tank, which they were taught to make. The Conference ended with state AGM rounding off with the 'Song of peace' and 'I am woman'.

Fire flow testing in Beerwah Unitywater will be testing water flow and pressure at fire hydrants across Beerwah between November and January next year.

Unitywater Executive Manager Infrastructure Planning and Capital Delivery Simon Taylor said Unitywater is testing the network to identify those fire hydrants that need replacing.

“We test fire hydrants to ensure that emergency services personnel have sufficient water pressure and flow rates for firefighting,” he said.

“Any identified replacements will be carried out as part of our maintenance program.”

Crews will be tapping fire hydrants and flushing water into the gutters and stormwater system.

This work may result in customers receiving discoloured water for a short period. If this

Contributed by Jenny Morris This year 33 View Club members got all glammed up and headed to Club Glasshouse for a morning of fun with Trivia and some delicious food for our luncheon.

The room was full of excited people wanting to win some money in the sweeps and raffles.

Glenda Halpin made it to the finals in the Trivia contest and received a prize for her efforts. Unfortunately she didn’t get the big prize. Another of our members who did well was Lyn Moss (pictured) who was judged ‘Best Dressed’ on the day out of 97 who attended the function. Congratulations to our members who all looked great and had an enjoyable day.

Our next meeting is on November 18 at The Glasshouse Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. This will be our last meeting for the year. Please help out the Committee for next year by putting your name down for any vacant spots on the Committee for the AGM in January.

You can make friends and enjoy making us the successful club that we are in raising money for the Smith Family.

Cane toads became pests after being introduced into Australia from Hawaii in June 1935 by the Bureau of Sugar Experimental Stations.

The consignment of cane toads was imported to Australia in an attempt to control the native black cane beetle and Frenchi beetle. Thousands of offspring of the imported toads were deliberately released at points around Queensland in a misguided effort at biological control of these beetle pests of the sugar industry.

Since the time of introduction, cane toads have become increasingly a national concern with their spread being well documented. Their reach extends thousands of kilometres from where they were released to include major areas of the eastern and northern coast including the iconic World Heritage-listed Kakadu National park, significant inland areas of the continental north-east and some off shore islands. Cane toads are also continuing to spread into north-western Australia at a rate of more than 50 kilometres per year.

At an environmental level, cane toads have, via their toxicity massively impacted on populations of native predators, including quolls, snakes, monitor lizards and crocodiles. Substantial levels of mortality and extinction of local populations of predators have been recorded.

Cane toads are opportunistic, omnivorous and fearless predators and will eat almost anything they can catch and swallow. Their diet is predominantly comprised of small terrestrial arthropods (such as beetles, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, ants, winged termites and crickets), but also includes larger items such as marine snails, other (smaller) toads, frogs, small snakes, small mammals, small birds, earthworms, planarians, rotting fruit, carrion, household scraps and processed pet food. This search for food often leads cane toads into residential gardens and places frequented by your pets.

Humans and pets which are exposed to the toxins may experience intense pain and severe irritation to the eyes, and temporary or permanent blindness (NRCMA). It can cause death if left untreated.

Become a butterfly host!

with Ann McGrath I felt a twinge of excitement yesterday when I saw my first male Orchard Swallowtail of the season. You see, I am captivated by the grace and beauty of butterflies. There is something magical about having them in your garden.

Each species of butterfly requires a specific host plant in order for the caterpillars to feed. Some have managed to adapt to exotic ornamentals but unfortunately most butterflies are diminishing as their host plants disappear.

Thankfully, the identity of many of the host plants has been discovered and that information is readily available. We don’t have to leave the survival of the butterflies to chance if we all become butterfly hosts.

The down side of growing host plants for butterflies is that the caterpillars eat lots and can destroy the lush look of your garden. Just resist the urge to spray and you will be rewarded with the butterflies that visit.

Check with your local native nursery for available host plants. Some examples are, Emu foot, a ground cover that spreads to about a metre and attracts the Chequered Swallowtail Butterfly, the (Pararistolochia praevenosa) vine is the host for the beautiful Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, or Love Flower (Pseuderanthemum variabile) a small ground cover plays host to a range of different butterflies including the Eggfly Butterfly pictured.

I give a moo for mooloolah Give it a go and keep the heart of Mooloolah beating Celebrating grandparent’s day Last week Mooloolah State School held Grandparent's Day and celebrated the volunteers that have helped throughout the year.The day was amazing with students, parents and grandparents thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Firstly, we held a parade in the morning to

acknowledge and welcome everyone, a tribute slide show was played of students and their grandparents. This tribute was created by our Year 2 teacher Mrs Donna Aspinall.

After parade, the grandparents went back to student’s classrooms and enjoyed seeing where they learn. The students did many and varied activities with them such as board games, books, drawing, quizzes, painting and collage.

Some students even performed songs, poems, or readings for the grandparents.

The grandparents had a great time and then headed to the hall for a morning tea which was

organised by staff members.

They laughed, mingled and even reminisced about the days when they went to school.

The children were so proud of their Nanny’s, Pop’s, Grandpa’s and Grandma’s for being there that they had a hard time saying goodbye, but they bid them farewell with kisses, hugs and words of love.

Some children even did drawings of their time together with their grandparents.

What a special day for all. The school would like to thank everyone for coming and making the student’s day special.

The National Heart Foundation of Australia has presented the National and Queensland 2015 Golden Shoe Awards to Heart Foundation Walking member Helen Weil of Mooloolah Walkers.

Mayor Mark Jamieson recently congratulated Helen on her award winning achievements.

“Helen has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to the community and has made a significant impact on the Mooloolah walking group,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“These awards recognise people for going above and beyond the expectations of their roles in Heart Foundation Walking and it is individuals like Helen that make the Sunshine Coast the special place it is.

Heart Foundation Queensland CEO Stephen Vines said making the decision to participate in Heart Foundation Walking groups was the first step in becoming more active.

Heart Foundation Walking Coordinator for Mooloolah Walkers Anne Hicks said she nominated Helen for the Golden Shoe Awards because she was an inspiration to her walking group.

“Helen has been walking with our group since its inception in 2004 and has overcome multiple back and leg problems - always returning to her walking as soon as possible,” she said.

“She is incredible. She motivates her fellow walkers to exercise and walk regularly and gives up her time to submit articles to her local newspaper to promote the benefits of exercising,” Anne said.

Councillor Jenny McKay, Helen Weil, Mayor Mark Jamieson and Councillor Rick Baberowski Helen said she was honoured to be recognised for her efforts in the community.

“I have certainly had my health challenges but since I have been involved in the Heart Foundation Walking Mooloolah group my life has changed for the better,” she said.

Helen has been awarded both the Queensland and National Walker Awards which is a tremendous honour for her and her community.

Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’s largest free walking network and provides a simple, safe way to stay active.

Council's community and arts funding At last Thursday’s general meeting of the Sunshine Coast Council, council endorsed the first round of the major community grants, as well as the successful Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) applicants.

The list of recommended groups and individuals includes a significant number from the Glasshouse Country and Maleny areas, displaying how well regarded our region’s community organisations and artists are.

In the seven community grant categories, a total of 109 applications were received, requesting $995,975 in funding; whilst 12 RADF applications were received, totalling $86,920.

Of the 109 community grants applications received, the report to council recommended that 74 projects be funded to the amount of $491,489.

The total cost of the recommended projects is valued at $3,231,552 (based on figures supplied by applicants).

The report stated that the investment represents a $6.50 return on every dollar contributed by council in this grant round.

Locally, the groups receiving funding include Glasshouse Country Menshed ($5,000), Knitfest ($2,500)

Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club ($6,186) Maleny Tennis Club ($5,000), Maleny History Preservation and Restoration Society ($10,000), Arts Connect ($5,500) and Maleny Little Athletics ($2,026).

Of the 12 RADF applications, seven are recommended for funding, including Beerwah’s Tory Richards for a project entitled ‘Regional Marks – Celebrating 50 Years of Print’.

This project will enable a celebratory exhibition to be held, in collaboration with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), at the USC Gallery in May 2016.

The exhibition of print makers works will form part of an Australia-wide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Print Council of Australia (PCA). The PCA is promoting a Year of Print in 2016, where artists across Australia will hold exhibitions, competitions, residencies and workshops in celebration of print making.

The six week exhibition at the USC Gallery will showcase innovative mark making through traditional and contemporary methods by established and emerging printmakers from within the local region.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said trees and native vegetation on public land were vital to the environment and helped to make our region a vibrant place to live.

“Council strives to manage trees on councilowned land in a sustainable way, and public safety is always the top priority when trees are assessed,” Cr McKay said.

“The draft Strategic Tree and Native Vegetation Policy is an important guide that helps us to manage and enhance the region’s natural assets.

“A ‘no nett’ loss to the tree population over time, meaning if trees do have to be removed they will

be offset with new ones, is an important part of the policy.

“It’s also important for the right trees to be planted in the right place to ensure their longevity and that of surrounding infrastructure.

“Monitoring and maintaining trees and vegetation in the right way helps council achieve its goal of becoming Australia’s most sustainable region and helps preserve the unique character of our communities for current and future generations.”

Key activities outlined in the policy include tree inspection and maintenance, tree removal and offsets, tree planting, new works and protection of existing trees, and unauthorised interference with vegetation, which is managed in accordance with the relevant local laws and legislation.

Living Visitor Information Centre Update

By Bev Dooley Welcome to November, summer’s just around the corner and it’s only seven weeks until Christmas.The Glasshouse Information Centre has been very busy over the past month.

If you are looking for an interesting gift – we have two new books currently on sale. National Parks and Wildlife have issued a beautiful book on local flowers that’s been very carefully researched and illustrated, and is suitable to take out on walks. The second book is written and signed by local author, Michael Meadows and is called The Living Rock.

The book documents climbing in the area, and in particular shows some wonderful images of the early days and how people made it to the top of our beautiful mountains, mostly unaided. It is a great gift.

Many of the photographs in Michael’s book were taken at the same time as some of those on our wall in the centre.

One of the services we offer to local schools is the opportunity to visit the centre for a look around and an informative chat from one of our very knowledgeable Volunteer Ambassadors. Coming up, we have 150 pupils coming in to learn about the Glass House Mountains. It is always interesting to be a part of these interactions with some amazing questions keeping us on our toes.

Impacting tourism across the entire region, we encourage residents to have their say and support the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project.

School News Day for Daniel

Contributed to Kylie Merola Recently Landsborough State School joined thousands of schools across Australia by holding a 'Red Day' for Daniel, an annual event which promotes child safety awareness.

Staff and students were encouraged to wear red to highlight the importance of child safety.

School Chaplain, Linda Whysall, said the day gave adults an opportunity to have valuable conversations with children about keeping themselves safe.

Chappy visited all the classrooms talking to students about how to keep safe.

In particular, discussions were had about creating a family password, and a hand, with five people - one for each finger and thumb that they could trust. Other Day for Daniel activities included a colouring-in competition, red face painting at lunch time, and a special red themed menu in the school tuckshop.

Busy time for Peachester students

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C The children of Peachester State Primary are ending the year with loads of team building fun.

Years 4, 5 and 6 have just returned from a fabulous four day camp at Coolum Beach, learning a variety of water sports, dormitory living skills and the ins and outs of large group dynamics.

The facility and weather were fantastic, and the camp instructor’s were inspirational role models for the children to observe and learn from.

And just so the younger grades didn't feel entirely left out, Preps, and Years 1, 2 and 3 had their own 'Camp Day' at school.

The ever dynamic Peachester teachers organised

a variety of activities including water play, crafting, cooking and tent construction out of a myriad of materials.

All the students are having a chance to let off steam from a strenuous year of solid learning.

They're looking forward to their last few weeks of school, preparing for the highly popular and competitive swimming carnival, Coochin versus Stanley, School Awards night and the Christmas concert featuring the School Band.

Finally the seniors will farewell their primary school days with a gala Graduation Dinner, celebrating their achievements and wonderful nurturing years at Peachester Primary.

Out & About

Each of the classes at Glasshouse Christian College learned about Remembrance Day in different ways. At 11.00am the College experienced the miracle of more than a thousand people being quiet at the same time and place to honour of those who died in the line of duty. After a minutes' silence the teacher in each classroom read the Ode of Remembrance.

by Service Member Steve Rook with prayers from Pastor Clarrie and Cr Rick Baberowski laid a wreath on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Council.

There were approximately 65 people, both service and members of the public in attendance, and after the service, a light lunch was provided at the RSL club which was attended by nearly all that went to the service.

The Maleny RSL Sub Branch had around 100 people gather for Remembrance Day this year. The day was a cooler, fine day and many stayed afterwards for a chat, cuppa and biscuit.

The Peachester History Committee members were pleased to host their annual Remembrance Day service at the Peachester Cemetery. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge all who have served, remembering especially local diggers at rest in the cemetery and those honoured with memorial plaques.

Landsborough Community Kindergarten

At Landsborough Community Kindergarten we held a minutes silence as we stood together around our Memorial Garden to honour and remember the soldiers who have fought in war.

We talked about how we are very lucky to live in a country that provides us with lots of opportunities such as attending schools and playing with our friends, hospitals to go to if we are sick and jobs that allow our mums and / or dads to earn money to buy healthy foods and toys for us to play with. Out & About Annual morning tea The Glasshouse Calvary Lutheran Ladies Fellowship held their annual morning tea at Glasshouse last Friday.

The event brought members from other Lutheran Fellowship groups from a range of churches including Buderim, Caloundra and Caboolture.

Also represented on the day were members of other local churches who enjoy attending each others special events.

The speaker on the day was David Terry an Education Officer from RACQ who spoke about Road Safety for all, giving the audience plenty to think about.

Rebuilding Roy's Road

A letter-writer in last week's GC&MNews raised the important issue of the state of Roys Road.

They are not alone in their concerns; several other constituents have contacted me about its condition and speed zones since the opening of the Roys Road-Bells Creek Road Intersection on the Bruce Hwy, which has led to a lot more traffic using the road.

I share their concerns and have been advocating for an upgrade. The letter-writer specifically pointed to the stretch between Burys Road and the old forestry site as the worst section. I am pleased to be able to confirm that $1.1 million has been allocated and work will start this month to rebuild that section of the road.

This will expand on council's previous $2.1 million project that realigned and rebuilt the section between Beerwah and Burys / Mawsons Road.

There will still be more to do after the latest section is complete. Ultimately, in my view Caloundra South and the new intersection are essentially turning what was a local forestry road into a major arterial road, which would usually be a state government responsibility given the scale of the project.

However, since the local road already existed, it has fallen to council to upgrade it to the required standard. We hope that the State Government will realise that it should 'chip in' to get the whole road up to the standard the community deserves in a reasonable timeframe.

Until then I will be asking that council look at the speed zones and continue to do what we can and target the sections that need it most.

When is a bulb not a bulb … when it’s a corm Bulb, corm, tuber, rhizome … what are the differences and does it really matter?

To most people, it’s of no interest, but to a gardener it matters a lot.

The ‘uneducated’ (i.e. non-gardeners) just call everything a bulb, but to us higher-order beings the differences are important.

So here’s a quick guide.

Bulbs – such as an onion, daffodil, hippeastrum or garlic – have a basal plate from where the roots grow and are made up of layers normally forming a rough point at the top. At their centre is a germ stem which grows and develops onto leaves and flowers.

Some bulbs will form scales around their outside which form new bulbs. These can be broken off and planted to eventually grow into a mature flowering bulb.

It’s important to remember that when you plant them, it’s pointy end up.

Corms – can look like bulbs but they don’t have layers. Examples include freesia, gladioli, snake lily and crocus. A corm is a modified stem which has a basal plate from where the roots will grow. The centre of the bulb is solid and they will have a bump on the top from where the leaves will grow. So watch this as you may need to work out which way goes up or down when planting them.

Corms can exhaust their energy and so produce new small corms at the base to replace themselves. So individual corms tend to have a fixed lifespan, which isn’t the case with bulbs.

Rhizome

Tubers – are sometimes called bulbs but they are very different. A tuber is a swollen underground stem (think potatoes and cyclamen) or root (sweet potato and dahlia) used to store starch, water and Bulb Tuber nutrients.

Tubers have ‘eyes’ where they shoot from. Some have eyes spread over their surface, while others have the eyes organised at the top of the tuber.

The good thing about tubers is that you can plant them any old way and they will grow without problem. Some can even be cut into pieces, each piece with an eye, to grow separately.

Tubers in themselves don’t reproduce – the plant tends to make more tubers on the underground stem or roots. Most tubers last only one season, before being exhausted, but some can grow larger and larger each year.

Rhizomes – are the least understood. They are stems which grow under the ground from which leaves and flowers grow. Good examples are bamboo, ginger, iris and canna lily.

Along them, they have buds – just like a plant has new growth buds – which shoot out in the soil to form a new rhizome section.

Rhizomes will last much longer than tubers, sometimes many years.

Rhizomatous plants can be divided easily but cutting up the rhizome – as long as you have a growth bud, it should be OK.

Native Hibiscus or native rosella

Hibiscus heterophyllus Native hibiscus is a relatively common shrub found in wet or dry forests. Usually regarded as a shrub but in some situations it can reach six or seven metres. The stems can be slightly prickly and leaves vary in shape from single oval shape to three lobed.

When grown in full sun in the home garden, hibiscus can be pruned to an attractive rounded shape. However in the wild and under larger trees it becomes a less compact and rather straggly plant.

The flowers are large and attractive, usually white or pale pink with a red/purple throat.

Buds are often deep pink. Flowers are short lived but flowering continues from Spring to Summer.

The fruit and seed capsules are prickly and often targeted by insects making it difficult to obtain viable seed. Native hibiscus is currently flowering in our National Parks and along road verges in the local area.

Craig Moody - Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Two of our Caloundra Glasshouse Country parishioners, are spending three months on self-funded missionary work in Africa. Apart from building accommodation and funding some infrastructure development, they help out where needed, as time permits. I enclose this extract from one of their recent ‘Out of Africa’ reports to the parish, so that you might get a feel for their ministry: ‘We arrived at Holy Family Orphanage at Ofcolaco right on sunset at 6.30pm to be greeted by hordes of excited children, about 40 excluding 3 babies and 15 crèche children, some already in their pyjamas. We met Jessica, an amazing young Australian volunteer from South Australia, who has already been here for a month. After settling into our room and a light dinner in the volunteers’ communal kitchen, we were briefed by Sister Sally as to our schedule for the week.

The activities for the week included: Water slide activities, which was basically just a plastic sheet connected to a hose which allowed water to sprinkle over the sheet making it slippery; it was great fun! Bike riding, this

meant allocating the children into groups of eight because there were only 8 bikes out of about 20 in reasonable condition. So each child was able to ride for 15 minutes over a pre-defined course.

Then in the afternoons, the children were allowed to use the education room computers for a half hour each. There are 8 computers so the kids were again arranged in groups of 8, supervised

by Terry and Jessica. While the children were waiting their turn on the computers, Julie organised a round-robin craft and play activity in the hall. There was beading work, puzzles, drawing, construction with meccano type plastic pieces, colouring-in and maths puzzles.

On Sunday, the senior children conducted a worship service of singing, scripture readings and prayer under the watchful eye of Sr Sally. All the children were very well behaved and it was a delight to be able to share in worship with them.

It was a challenging week as most of these children have been traumatised or abused in some way and display antisocial and behaviour problems. But, it was also a very rewarding week to spend time with the children and to see most of them respond to love and attention.
