Hi Everyone...

Well Saturday may have seen our area receive a month’s worth of rain in one day, however it didn’t stop the family and friends of Peachester State School enjoying their Peachester Village Festival. While the extreme rain meant that the schedule of entertainment and variety of food vans had to be reduced it didn’t seem to stop those who attended from having a great time. When we arrived the Peachester Hall was packed and the noise was incredible … no not from the rain on the roof, just the number of people, chatting, catching up and enjoying a laugh! I guess it was perfect timing for us to be prepared for more of the same this Friday night when the Beerwah Street Party gets underway in Simpson Street from 4pm. I have to say it isn’t often that you get the chance to photograph Elvis in Beerwah, but from the front cover you will see that there is already one local getting his performance ready for the Elvis Impersonation Competition that is expected to be a highlight of this year’s event. We have a story on page 5 that will give you plenty of detail about what will be happening at the event, and check out the centre pages for even more info. Hope to see you all on the Street this Friday night! Regards,

20 Friday Beerwah Village (corner of Peachester Road and Simpson Street) will be getting into the Street Party vibe with a number of awesome free activities planned from 4pm to 9pm. The family event will feature a Giant Slide, Reptile Show, rock climbing wall, petting zoo, dance display and more.

21 Saturday Want to source incredibly fresh and healthy local produce and products? Head along to the Blackall Range Growers Markets. Along with seasonal fruit and vegetables, organic meats and market cafe, there is locally blended coffee and a friendly community atmosphere. It’s on at 316 Witta Road, Witta from 7.30am until noon. 21 Saturday Landsborough Hall Markets are on from 8am to 1pm. Come along to grab a bargain. There will be second hand stalls, craft, plants, food and more.

25 Wednesday A free Type 2 Diabetes Information Session will be held from 9am to 1pm at the Maroochydore RSL Sub-branch, Memorial Avenue, Maroochydore. People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, pre diabetes, or anyone who supports them, are welcome to attend. The session covers information about type 2 diabetes, self management, lifestyle change, communication with health professionals and emotional wellbeing. Bookings are essential. Phone 5450 4747.

26 Thursday Fix It Cafe is on at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre from 9am to noon, so get your things ready that need fixing. The team will have a look and, if it is fixable, a fee of $5 per item is charged and that goes to the Neighbourhood Centre.

Local News Heard about Sledge Hockey? Glass House Mountains resident Kelvin Mickelson is keen to spread the word about an exciting and energising sport - Sledge Hockey (a.k.a. Para Ice Hockey), which can be enjoyed by people of all abilities. If you have use of your arms and hands and you would like to experience ‘floating’ over ice, then this new sport may be for you! Originally from Canada, Kelvin by his own admission has always been partial to winter sports. A couple of years ago he returned for a holiday to Canada with his family and, travelling up to the far north, he experienced Sledge Hockey for the first time and has been hooked ever since. Realising the numerous benefits of the sport, Kelvin has been determined to raise its profile here. Kelvin said Sledge Hockey is huge in the Northern Hemisphere and is the most watched sport at the winter Paralympics. “It is a great game that can be enjoyed by all disabled persons who have use of their arms and hands, able-bodied persons who are unable to stand-up on ice, or even as unique corporate team building activities which everyone can participate in,” he said. With funding from a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant and support from Amputees & Families Support Group Qld, as well as local MP Andrew Powell, twelve sleds have been purchased with the public grant funds.

These sleds will be eventually distributed to ice rinks around the state for people to use. Kelvin has organised ‘Come and Try’ events at Boondall Olympic Ice Rink on November 6 from 10am until noon. “We already have the infrastructure in place here with international standard ice skating facilities which can be adapted to International Para Olympic standards – I’d love to give the opportunity to others to enjoy this sport,” Kelvin said. This sport has attracted the interest of members in Mates4Mates, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Amputees & Families Support Group Qld, and the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association. If you’d like to find out more, visit the ParaiceHockey Australia Facebook page or contact Kelvin on 0417 622 707.

The community fight to stop a quarry from going ahead at Beerburrum was taken to the next level last week. After a campaign by the Beerburrum Action Group, a 1,222 signature petition was presented in State Parliament, highlighting the issue to all State Members. The petition – sponsored by One Nation Queensland State Leader Steve Dickson – was a response to the Barro Group lodging a development application with Sunshine Coast Council to create a hard rock quarry on the Beerburrum-Woodford Road. Beerburrum Action Group spokesperson Heather Cardaci was pleased with the support the petition generated. “We received more than 1,200 signatures, more than the entire population of Beerburrum itself – indicating the community’s overwhelming objection to the quarry development application,” Heather said. “We are now focusing our efforts on gathering more written submissions to take to Council. “We have received excellent support from Steve Dickson and his One Nation candidates – Tracey Bell Henselin and Rod Jones, as well as the ALP's Glass House Candidate Brent Hampstead along with Sue Webber from the Greens, and Narelle McCarthy from Sunshine Coast Environment Council.” Queensland Leader of One Nation and Member for Buderim Steve Dickson was pleased to throw his

Beerburrum Action Group members Aziz Mali, Mitra Mali, Lesley Epple, Heather Cardaci, One Nation candidate Tracey Bell-Henselin, and Julie Kemp at Parliament House support behind the Beerburrum Action Group. “Together with One Nation candidate for Glass House Tracey Bell-Henselin, I have been working with the Beerburrum Action Group who are representing the interests of the local community in their stand against quarry blasting at Beerburrum,” said Mr Dickson. “I have also requested a meeting with the Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham MP, Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, for the Beerburrum Action Group. “This is about putting people before politics to ensure the voice of the community is heard.” The Beerburrum Action Group want to keep up the pressure on Sunshine Coast Council and ask for community support by completing a submission form and sending it to Council – or posting it to PO Box 72, Beerburrum, 4517. For more information or to receive a copy of the Council submission form, see their Facebook page (‘Beerburrum Action Group’) or email Heather on heather.cardaci@gmail.com.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Beerwah Street Party countdown! By Sonia Clark The excitement is reaching fever pitch as the final countdown begins for the hugely anticipated Celebrate Glasshouse Country Beerwah Street Party! With the last street party event amassing crowds of over 8,500 – this year’s festival is set to be bigger and better than ever. Tireless coordinator Judy Tomlinson and her small team of dedicated volunteers have worked behind the scenes non-stop to pull together this event which will run this Friday, October 20, from 4pm until 9pm. Jam-packed with live entertainment, open air street dining, free rides, artisan market stalls and heaps more, the night promises to offer something to engage everyone. “It’s a wonderful way for our community to connect and for friends, family and neighbours of all ages to catch up,” Judy said. “We’ve had incredible feedback from past events with many of our older long-term residents saying how they have loved that this type of event brings back that community feel they enjoyed growing up with. We love seeing the local businesses, community organisations, families and residents all enjoying themselves.” This year the event will have a number of ‘zones’ and will incorporate a larger area running along Simpson Street from Aldi to the traffic lights, Beerwah Village and Marketplace and various spots throughout surrounding car parks.

Pedestrians will be able to ‘reclaim’ Simpson Street as traffic will be closed off to allow festival goers to savour the various food and market stalls, street dining and entertainment. Local school students will be performing dance and musical acts from 4pm-6pm on the main stage located on the Tower Green, followed by some great live music acts such as jazz with Black Banner and Jason Fichera which should get the party dancing in the street! Don’t forget to dust off your blue suede shoes and enter the Elvis Impersonator competition at 7pm. Pre register via Facebook to go into the competition to win $250 and a dinner for four at Beerwah Hotel. At the Aldi end of Simpson Street there will be a classic car display and the street will also feature over 60 stalls selling food, plants, handcrafted items and much more. At Beerwah Village there will be a dedicated ‘Kids Zone’ set up with awesome free activities including a giant slide, reptile show, rock climbing wall, teacup ride and petting zoo. Parents and carers can kick back and relax with some great street dining options while the kids enjoy the kid safe area and even teenagers will have their own zone, located near the CWA Hall. There will be plenty of parking surrounding the area and people can park and then hop on the free bus loop throughout the evening (see map for pickup spot details).

Beerwah State School students totally wowed the audience at the 2015 Beerwah Street Party Simpson Street will come alive with live entertainment throughout the evening and there will be heaps of seating and tables to enjoy the smorgasbord of dining options which includes over 25 food outlets. People will be encouraged to ditch the plastic and consider more sustainable options – there will be free water refills available on the night, so bring your own drink bottles. “We believe that healthy communities need to be maintained, so our handful of volunteers has put their heart and soul into helping put this event together. We are really looking forward for everyone to come together and have a great time!” Judy said. For more details, visit their Facebook page or www.celebrateglasshousecountry.com.au.

Playground shenanigans in Maleny By Greg Brown Plans for new playground equipment for Cooke Park, in Maple Street, Maleny have been halted by Sunshine Coast Council last week after an outpouring of community outrage. Despite signage in the park advising of the changes to popular the playground equipment in the park and the upgrade being flagged by Division 1 Councillor Jenny McKay on her Facebook page on September 12, then Council giving a preview of what the design would look like on their Facebook page on September 26, as well as newspaper stories in local media, some in Maleny were unaware that the project was even happening and many felt that there was a definite lack of community consultation by Council. With the decommissioning of the timber play structures well underway last week, all hell broke loose on social media when people realised the modern look of play equipment that Council proposed to include in the park’s upgrade. Many who commented thought the proposed playground design left a lot to be desired... not to mention other unresolved issues such as the lack of toilets, shade and inadequate secure fencing. The upgrade was variously described as “ugly”, “offensive”, “soul-less”, “a horrible waste”. And it seems that community pressure has won out once again, with Council conceding that they may need to do some actual consultation on the design, according to a Council Facebook update.

“Hi everyone,” the Facebook message starts. “Thank you for your feedback on this playground. We’ve listened to your concerns about the new equipment and have put construction on hold. We welcome further feedback and will communicate with the Maleny community in the coming weeks to gain further comments. “The old timber playground was decommissioned this week as it presented safety issues caused by rotten timber and mould. Safety is Council’s top priority and this damage was beyond repair. “The proposed playground had been selected due to its longevity, as timber playground elements require replacement much sooner than other elements, and for the design’s environmental education features – however, your feedback on the design is important and alternative options will be considered.” The concession from Council was roundly applauded with many comments and ‘thumbs up’ Facebook likes. Due to a recent death in Cr McKay’s family, no comment was sought from the councillor for this story.

Cottage industry to global market Beerburrum business Hive Haven is set to transform native bee honey from a cottage industry into a sustainable export market with funding from the State Government’s Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas Fund. Minister for Innovation Leeanne Enoch recently announced that Beerburrum company Hive Haven would receive funding to manufacture its innovative stingless native bee hive, investigate a method for stabilising stingless native honey for local and export commercial use, and explore agri-business scalability for native bee farming. “For thousands of years, Indigenous Australians have collected stingless native honey as both a food and medicine source,” Ms Enoch said. “Now with the European Honey Bee in rapid decline, native stingless bees are increasingly seen as the future of food crop pollination. “Through Ignite Ideas funding, we are providing innovative businesses like Hive Haven with the support to take their clever ideas to the next level.” Hive Haven managing director Ann Ross said the Ignite funding would enable the company to scale up native honey production levels and take a step towards its dream of seeing a native bee hive in every backyard. “We are excited to be building a commercial future for Australian stingless native bees,” Ms Ross said.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

CARING FOR YOU!!

“The Queensland climate lends itself to native honey production and pollination. “Native bee farming is a growing agribusiness that lends itself to both rural and urban settings throughout many regions of Queensland.” Native honey has a distinctive eucalyptus and tangy lemon flavour. Ann said Hive Haven will work with University of Queensland researchers to reduce the water content of native honey to stabilise its shelf life, which would improve its appeal as an export product. In addition, technology at the Queensland University of Technology will be utilised to temperature test the hives. “Native bee products will create employment in research, the export sector and food and medical industries,” Ann said. “Our first goal is to see Australian stingless native honey on the menu of not only our finest restaurants here in Australia but throughout Asia as well.

Local business woman uses connections for good

Maleny Credit Union’s Business Development Officer, Nicole Hilton, has put her connections to good use, organising a sold-out event in support of women affected by cancer. The Maleny local said she was ecstatic her Girls’ Night In, to be held at Pomodoras on Obi had received such a positive response from the community and hoped to Jody Bond from Pomodoras on Obi raise at least $2,000 from with Nicole Hilton from Maleny Credit the night. Union Nicole, who runs Chicks in Biz, a monthly breakfast networking group, and is on the Maleny Commerce committee as well as being involved in the Blackall Range Lions Club, said: “As I’m very entrenched in the local community I know many people, so I wanted to hold an event that would not only connect ladies, but fundraise for an important cause.” She has previously taken part in other Cancer Council Queensland campaigns with her work, such as Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, and Relay For Life. Funds raised from Cancer Council Queensland Girls’ Night In events support the one in six Queensland women diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer in their lifetime. Nicole encouraged other locals to host their own Girls’ Night In during October to raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s work in women’s cancers. “Girls’ Night In events can be as big or as small as you want – why not host a pamper party, cooking night or a movie night with friends?” she said. “The idea is to donate what you would normally spend on a night out back to Cancer Council Queensland.” Register your Girls’ Night In event for a free host kit and find more information at www.girlsnightin.com.au.

Beerwah agent makes the A List!

By Sonia Clark Following on from a long list of achievements, local Beerwah real estate agent Andrew Dobbie has been recently recognised as one of the top 150 sales agents in Queensland. ‘The A-List’ awards, sponsored by Mercedes Benz Brisbane, are based purely on sales and listing performance, and Andrew is delighted to be recognised in the State’s top 1% across the industry from 16,500 registered sales people. Andrew said he was excited about making it onto the list and had worked very hard to achieve these results. “It certainly gives me a sense of accomplishment and it’s nice that people recognise the effort,” he said. Now in its fifth year, the awards are based on sales data obtained from industry analysts Pricefinder. Data is assessed by the number and value of sales, and number of listings from the previous calendar year. Agents cannot self nominate their ranking, and data is assessed across agencies in the industry – so inclusion on the list represents a true indication of achievement. “Over the last nine years I’ve always put in the hard work to match the right property to the right person with an honest, friendly and down to earth approach,” Andrew said. “It was great to receive an email from the CEO of Ray White to say that I’d made it onto the top 150 agents list!” On November 21, Andrew will gather with all the ‘A Listers’ for a gala event recognising the 150 elite sales professionals. Already the number one selling agent for the Ray White group on the Sunshine Coast, this is another prestigious feather in Andrew’s hat – an accomplishment he is grateful for but humble about.

Community News Community worker moving on By Lea Parkes Many of you may know Hinterland Community Development Worker, Ana Greenfield, personally or from many articles in GC&M News about local community initiatives she was involved in. After four years in the role, Ana finished up last week to take on a job at the Nambour Community Centre in her home town. Ana brought her natural community development skills, passion and empowering traits to a range of groups and volunteers in Glasshouse Country and Maleny. Many community initiatives gained notable capacity and strength thanks to Ana's care in her work, including the Beerwah Street Party, Celebrate Glasshouse Country group,

community response to suicide prevention, Loving Landsborough Day, housing projects in Maleny, capacity building at Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and connecting community with Indigenous culture. Ana will be greatly missed by her work colleagues and the community and we wish her all the best in her new role. Ana's co-worker, Natasha Odgers, will continue in the role and will be joined by Jody Blackburn and Tomas Passegi from the Caloundra and Hinterland Community Development Team. Expialidopest reign supreme Local Hip Hop dancer Noah Standring, who is a Year 7 student at Glasshouse Country Christian College, was really excited to be competing in the World Supremacy Battlegrounds (WSB), the biggest Hip Hop competition in the Southern Hemisphere. After training together for 12 months, Noah’s crew competed against 23 teams from around Australia at the recent competition in Sydney and it came as a total shock when they were crowned Junior Australian Champions. Noah’s dad Brett Standring said the crew, called ‘Expialidopest’, are part of the House of Sole in Nambour that train twice a week, and they were all very excited and super proud of their achievement.

“As a parent I feel really blessed to be able to support Noah in following his passion,” Megan said. “And it really goes to show that when you put your best (dance steps) forward, anything is possible."

By Sonia Clark Following their recent AGM, Maleny Show Society President Ivan Hankinson was pleased to announce that Simone Svenson has been welcomed to the committee as the new sponsorship officer. Simone, who lives in Conondale with her husband and young family, has grown up on the Range and was encouraged to consider the honorary position by her mum Karen Lusk (current Show Society Treasurer). After spending time in recent years devoting herself to her young family, Simone is looking forward to getting out and about to help with generating sponsorship opportunities. With family connections to the area, she is excited to be reconnecting with local sponsors and businesses in an effort to help promote this great annual event. “I love the community feel here and I’m really looking forward to building up new connections and engaging with our current sponsors,” Simone said. “The region is buzzing and the show is a fantastic drawcard – I’m looking forward to pitching in.” Ivan said he was pleased to welcome Simone onboard and he and the committee are thrilled to have someone with a fresh, happy face to build relationships with sponsors and donors for the 2018 show. “Simone will be contacting sponsors from this year and we are keen to see how many new partners she can bring on board as well,” he said. “We always deeply appreciate the support from our local businesses and community and it’s wonderful to have an officer dedicated to this role.” Simone officially started her role at the beginning of this month and has committed to working up to the end of June next year. If you would like to discuss sponsorship opportunities, Simone can be contacted on 0419 159 905.

Happy hats at Mental Wellness Day

Happy hats and happy faces filled the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday October 11 at the Mental Wellness Day. The event was full of inspiring talks, practical strategies for self-care and wellbeing and brave sharing of people's experiences. There was plenty of fun with hula hooping and a Mad Hatters Tea Party lunch. Deepness in people was also reached with yoga, mindfulness, Connecting to Country and finishing with an energising sound circle. Thanks goes to all the fantastic speakers, Hinterland Community Development Program, Partners in Recovery (Lutheran Services), Our Towns Matter program, OzCare, Uncle Alan Parsons, Neighbourhood Centre volunteers, Calvary Lutheran Church and White's IGA.

Hello, my name is Rod Jones and I would like to introduce myself as the One Nation candidate for the electorate of Caloundra. I am committed to representing the people of Caloundra and I will fight for the issues that local residents say are important to them. One Nation is taking time to carefully listen to the concerns of Queenslanders statewide and will allow people their rightful voice in government. I commit to working closely with the people of Caloundra to develop solutions for the issues that impact our region—together progressing the key priorities to advance our future prosperity. I will provide a strong voice representing your interests in the Queensland Parliament. Community feedback has revealed that local priorities must be to address issues such as youth unemployment, water security, health services, road infrastructure, law and order, cost of living and the abolishment of the Safe Schools program. I seek your support to enable me to deliver these priorities. You have my promise that as a One Nation candidate I will always put people before politics.

MEET YOUR ONE NATION CANDIDATE FOR GLASS HOUSE - Tracey Bell-Henselin

I have a ‘Heritage of Patriot’ passion in my DNA, the second youngest of five children of a hard working and sporting rural living family. I love sports and stay active in the Glass House Mountains and hinterland with husband Paul (local business owner) and adult children. I feel honoured to stand for the Australian people, which both my Grandfathers did in WW2. I am a member of our Light Horsemen and Rotary. I also work mentoring in Maleny State School, supporting our local children and families. I have a heart for our local farmers and producers – they are the backbone of our economy. I personally invest and support local shelters and crisis accommodation, homeless and families struggling to keep the lights on. I am part of the Beerburrum Action Group protecting Beerburrum Mountain / Glass House Mountains, to stop the blasting of our Heritage Listed Mountains. My career background is diverse which is the foundation of my entrepreneurial vision in our own business – Women of Worth and Identity , Kingdom Health – which we founded and direct. I am also formally the Queensland state manager for Destiny Rescue which rescues children trapped in sex trafficking. The Hinterland and Coast is the best place to live, work and raise a family. Let's protect our community, land and families and stand united under One Nation, One Australian law and put the people's hearts and voices first.

Sculpture the real winner

Sunrise, sunset, rain and shine, the staff at Spicers see the sculptures around the gardens at Tamarind in every light, including their extraordinary silhouettes at night. Their workplace transforms into an exhibition over a few days, a few weeks later and then the sculptures disappear. Some of them have a strong presence, while others are subtle, blending into the environment. Very few people will see the sculptures in varied light, and direction, as the staff of Spicers. For the first time this year, the Sculpture on the Edge Committee asked the staff to choose their favourite piece. Their vote was a clear decision – Giant Pacific Octopus by Cameron Rushton, a large sculpture by a Townsville entrant who has spent years making steel animals when he cannot find work. Everyone else still has a chance to have their say for the final award up for grabs this year. People’s Choice Award, proudly sponsored by Melinda Martin of Ray White Maleny, will be presented at the end of the exhibition after all of the public votes have been counted. There are still a few more days left to view the sculptures and lodge your ‘Peoples’ Choice’ vote before they start being trucked away from Monday 23 October. The Committee of Arts Connect Inc are currently accepting expressions of interest from those who want to be part of the team for 2018. October Good Neighbour Award Contributed by Sheila Williams At the meeting of Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch Queensland on October 10, the Good Neighbour Award for October was presented to Timothy Venter, the President of the Landsborough and District Historical Society and Museum. This organisation was nominated by Helen Page, whose nomination explained when the Landsborough Historical Society was formed in 1973, it included forward thinking members from districts throughout the then Landsborough Shire, who set about the task of gathering and preserving the history of the shire. The museum was established in 1976, in the original Landsborough Shire Council Chambers, where it is still situated today. In 1988 a major renovation and extension provided more exhibition space, and it is now one of the largest social history museums in South-East Queensland, dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the local region.

Maleny Blackall Range Lions best again

Regularly changing exhibitions have highlighted many aspects of the district’s history, for example recently ‘Far From This Land’ Ron Stocks (the area commemorated coordinator, on right) presents the centenary of the award to Timothy Venter WW1. The current exhibition ‘The Newsmakers’ features a review of Sunshine Coast news and headlines from 1967 to 2017, marking the 50th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast name. The Landsborough & District Historical Society and Museum has been fortunate to have a keen, loyal and dedicated band of volunteers over the years, each generation taking up the challenge and building on the important work started in 1973.

Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Janet Kitchin The ladies just had their October outing. In view of the weather it was necessary to cancel our visit to Maroochy Botanic Gardens and we met at Joy

Joyce's for a delicious morning tea with lots of savoury and sweet delights. Joy gave us a preview of her painting for the ‘Love of Landsborough’ exhibition. Our next lunch will be on October 18 at Glass House Sports Club at 11am for 11.30 start. Our guest speaker will be a representative from Sippy Downs Animal Refuge. Any ladies who are interested in coming to one of our functions or would like to join our club would be most welcome. Please ring Lynda on 5484 7875 or Trish on 5493 0026 for more information. We raise money for The Smith Family and The Learning for Life Program at all our functions.

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range was announced Club of the Year for the third year running at the recent District 201Q3 convention in Dalby. Competition between the 73 clubs is high, so this was a sought after and competitive win. It encompasses all facets of the Lions program, including administrative duties performed by the secretary and president, plus and minus points for membership retention and growth, and participation in state and national programs for service and fundraising. Attendance at Lions administrative meetings is important for the executive, as is public relations in both the club bulletin and local newspapers and these too earn points. The club also won the award for the best monthly bulletin in the District. The Maleny Blackall Range Lions are very actively involved in Youth of the Year and Youth Exchange and Lions Childhood Cancer Research, as well as other health and sight programs and the yearly Christmas cake sales. School News Academic and Cultural Cup 2017

Contributed by Peter Voight (event co-ordinator) Beerwah High recently celebrated our third annual Academic & Cultural Cup, with teachers, students and guests entertained by performances by award-winning rock group ‘Stand Alone’, the harmonic tones of the Beerwah High vocal group, Champion House Beerwah High’s Stage Band, a duo from the school’s Dance Company and an engaging performance by a small group of actors who performed an excerpt from the ‘Robin the Hood’ theatre restaurant presented earlier this year. Congratulations went to Team Tunbubudla, who became the school’s first multiple winner of the trophy, having also taken the cup out in our inaugural year in 2015. This year six new and six returning year level male and female champions were entered into the BSHS Scholastic Almanac, which keeps a record and signatures of male and female champions for each year level. The third year of our newest cup was highly successful, with the spawning of two new in-school competitions under the competitive Academic & Cultural concept. Our popular ‘tennis’ themed spelling bee tournament was joined by a new ‘basketball’ themed maths competition and a ‘water polo’ themed trivia competition. Special congratulations this year to our ‘Robin the Hood’ Drama Company (Team Distinction), who took out a ‘Gold Standard Dramatic Performance’ award at the Sunshine Coast School Drama Festival with their excerpt from the theatre restaurant that they performed at our school earlier in the year. Dance Company (Team Distinction) also had another great year, taking out a first, second, third, fourth and several highly commended placings in the very competitive Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast Eisteddfods. The Academic & Cultural Cup train is full steam ahead into 2018.

You Said It Plastic straws need to go!

In July I wrote to GC&M News about plastic drink straw contamination. In the USA, people discard 500 million straws a day, or more than 180 billion a year. According to the anti-straw group the Last Plastic Straw, 80-90% of marine debris is plastic, and as much as 80% comes from plastics discarded on land. Now a new issue has arisen – micro-plastic wastes contaminating water. This headline and story were in the UK Guardian last month – 'Plastic Fibres found in Tap Water around the World, Study Reveals': "Microplastic contamination has been found in tap water in countries around the world, leading to calls from scientists for urgent research on the implications for health. Scores of tap water samples from more than a dozen nations were analysed by scientists for an investigation by Orb Media. Overall, 83% of the samples were contaminated with plastic fibres." What was concerning was that washing machines are contributing as well. "Plastic fibres may also be flushed into water systems, with a recent study finding that each cycle of a washing machine could release 700,000 fibres into the environment." This is from washing synthetic clothing made from artificial fibres. Dr Sherri Mason, a microplastic expert in New York University who supervised the analyses said, "If it's impacting wildlife, then how do we think that it's not going to somehow impact us?" The European media reported last year that over a dozen whales beached themselves along the German coastline. Four of the 13 stranded sperm whales had stomachs filled with plastic trash and other garbage – a sign of the times and a clear indicator that humans are taking their toll across the globe. Robert Habeck, Environment Minister for the state of Schleswig-Holsteins said these findings show us the results of our plastic-oriented society. Stopping plastic bags is essential, and plastic straws must go too. Richard Giles Conondale

Re: Music Today column

I very much enjoyed Dr Michael Whiticker’s piece on Leonard Cohen in GC&M News on October 5. In his music and his poetry, Leonard Cohen spoke with great insight into the human condition. It was not unusual for Cohen to spend years working on the lyric of a single song. From the high romance and eroticism of ‘A Thousand Kisses Deep’ and ‘Dance Me to the End of Love’, to the deeply personal ‘Bird on the Wire’, ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’ and ‘’Hey That’s No Way to Say Goodbye’; from the humour of ‘I’m Your Man’ and ‘Tower of Song’, to the earnestly humble, spiritual ‘Who By Fire’ and ‘If It Be Your Will’; from the drama of ‘Avalanche’ and ‘First We Take Manhattan’, the early ‘Suzanne’ to the

astounding ‘Hallelujah’ – Cohen was a songwriter like no other. As journalist Edward Docx observed in The Guardian (Nov 19 2016), he was the John Donne to Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan’s Shakespeare. Artists of sensitivity will return to these songs for generations to come. It is nice to have the good Dr Michael reminding readers of how such music can enrich our lives. If anyone would like to hear Cohen speak about his art, on YouTube, the acceptance speech Cohen gave when receiving the Prince of Asturias Award in Spain in 2011 is a most remarkable and moving speech. Re: What the?

Well Mr Procter, thank you very much for your rather droll letter in the October 5 edition of GC&M News highlighting design issues at Beerwah Marketplace. I notice however that you did not proffer a solution to rectify the state of these puzzling, tree-stumping erections, as might a well-minded community citizen. Scoff you may at my scorn, however, I am stepping forth with the solution. Following days of thought, and communications with council, there appears but one foreseeable way forward to resolving the idiocy that has occurred: The contractors must return to site to replace the existing structures – preferably with specially manufactured, bespoke, extendable pylons that will enable the gradual release of our prized shrubbery. Only then can we still park surrounded by greenery. In the meantime, I propose that we pay a nominal fee for parking under these festively adorned (pink and orange bunting) anomalous assemblies. Surely It’s the least we can do as a community to lessen the financial burden of replacement for the dotards in charge. Hoorah for sanity. Mr Tongue in Cheek Beerwah

Golf course expansion

I am writing about the approved expansion of the Maleny Golf Course and surrounding precinct area. There’s been a lot of speculation about the area but not a lot of information has been forthcoming from the Sunshine Coast Council on its final plans. In August it was announced the additional nine holes were to be developed. What council failed to advise was that a huge 42m x 12m maintenance shed was also to be built on the precinct, right next to the residents of Obi Lane. At no time was there any consultation with the residents or community. Access to the shed will be via the eastern side of Obi Lane, a very narrow tree lined, residential cul-de-sac. The access road will be extended to cross the precinct walk way, right near one of the sculptures that was recently installed. The construction of the shed has already commenced, alongside the historic bails.

SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519

What a ridiculous and dangerous place to put the maintenance shed! Council built two lane roads for the golf course and precinct access but has decided to place a huge maintenance shed on a poorly maintained, one lane road. Users of the path around the precinct will have to dodge large trucks crossing their path. I feel sorry too for the family who will be living right next door to the shed with its fertiliser and diesel fumes. It seems the privileged few have a louder voice and more clout to use such a large expanse of beautiful countryside for whatever purpose they want. The majority are left in the dark with limited and poor access to the precinct area and no say in how it’s used. I hope all the Hinterland residents ensure their voice is heard by our local councillors and use the next election as a chance for a fresh perspective. GC&M News, it would be great if you could find out exactly what else council has planned for the Maleny precinct area. You publish many letters with speculation about equestrian facilities and off leash dog areas, but it would be good for the residents to find out what is going on. The residents of Obi Lane can provide the actual plans and further details about the maintenance shed and dealings with the golf course president and Sunshine Coast Council. Samantha Dodd North Maleny

Re: Politician signage

I think that Mr Hine misses the point when it comes to roadside signs erected by politicians. Visual pollution, as well as noise pollution, is something that has become an unrecognised blight of the modern world. It’s bad enough that we are subjected to all sorts of claims made by marketers to flog their wares, but at least advertising signs do have a purpose. Similarly, the corflutes that pop up everywhere at election times, which are annoying but only temporary. I can't see that a huge, airbrushed, studio shot of a politician's mug on a permanent sign is anything other than an egregious sop to their ego. Personally, I grew up on a Sunshine Coast that was admired for its natural beauty, not one that had meaningless billboards obscuring our views. M Haddrell Beerwah

From the churches If God be for us….

This phrase, found in Romans 8, is one of my favorite scriptures. I’m always fascinated to hear people ask, “Why would a loving God allow all this suffering to happen?” My come-back question to this statement is, why did God create us human beings in the first place? We were created for relationship, and God loves it when we are in right relationship with Him. I have five children and when they are in right relationship with us (their parents) there are blessings or advantages that flow on from their obedience, manners, and their contribution around the home. It’s only when the relationship is out of right alignment (through disobedience) that they begin to think the whole world is against them, even their own Mum and Dad. Our heavenly Father wants to cover us, bless us and love us, but if we have shut ourselves out through disobedience or we allow issues to cloud

Pop Up Museum

As part of this year’s Beerwah Street Party there will be something different for all our ‘local history’ buffs. There will be a ‘Pop Up Museum’ and with so much history they aren’t going to be able to do it justice just for one night … so it ‘pops up’ for two weeks. It will be set up on Monday, October 16 and be open to the public from Tuesday, October 17 until Saturday, October 28. It is being set up in one of the empty shops just up from the Beerwah Post Office (previously the DVD shop) between Turner Street and Simpson Street in Beerwah. There will be displays from Bankfoot House, Landsborough Museum, Peachester History Group and Celebrate Glasshouse Country. It will be open from 10am to 2pm each day including Saturdays, however it will be closed Sunday. Over the course of the pop up museum, locals are encouraged to come in with their old photos so they can be scanned to share with the local community. The will be a printer/scanner to use, and local photographer Ilia Starkovsky will come in on Wednesday, October 25 and photograph any collections/photos that are too big to fit on the scanner. If you have photos that show the history of our area and would be happy to share them with others then make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to pop in and talk to the volunteers. an Australian Christian Church

our better judgment, then we rob ourselves of the blessings that come from being in relationship with Him. Over time we develop an attitude that separates us from God and we form our own opinion that God doesn’t like us. But remember: God is slow to anger and quick to forgive, like a loving parent who wants the best for His children, and He calls us His Children. Don’t run from God, run to Him, allow Him to redeem and restore your spiritual relationship with Him. God is not mad at you, in fact He is mad about you! He promises us a future and a hope. Think on this: When you’re walking in the rain under an umbrella you’re somewhat dry, the moment you step out from the umbrella you are drenched. Stay under the umbrella (or God’s covering, plus grace) and you will find blessing. Being close to God doesn’t mean we live without challenges or trials. What it does mean is, you have someone greater walking with you, guiding you through the storm. God is for you not against you. Read John 3:16, 1Corinthians 13 to see His measure of love.

Good Health Spring in with both feet

Autism spectrum disorders

With Leisa Rocker, B Balanced Homeopathy

When mums and dads bring their children in with conditions of autism, it can be quite the day for all concerned. Children will usually exhibit forms of hyperactivity, mutism, they cannot be looked at, and may be fixed on ‘a thing’. They do not like new things or routines, food, places or people. These are only a few symptoms. Their high sensory perceptions can make it difficult to make changes of foods, or medications. Homeopathic management can assist in reducing the heightened level of ‘melt downs’, whilst supporting their constitution. In the management of this condition, diet is always a factor to embark on – and environmental stimuli, stressors and family dynamics are all included. A consultation consists of history, likes, adversities, social, when, before pregnancy, during pregnancy, behaviours, tantrums, all sensory as per individual. Besides homeopathic management for the children, parents too need support. Testimonial: Boy, 11 years old, who used to refuse anything new and everything had to be in order. His mother wrote: “Travelled overseas and is experiencing so many new things which are out of his comfort zones, foods, talking to people, holding animals, and doing really well overall. Thank you.” August 2017. For enquiries, please call Leisa Rocker 0403 267 963 or visit www.bb6.com.au.

Springtime is ‘Liver Time’

With Kaz, Soulqi Acupucture & Massage Is it just me, or do people seem to becoming more stressed than ever before? Stress levels for most people are at an all time high, and an increase of chronic illness is rampant. Are you reliant on that cup of coffee or 3 each morning, a biscuit in the afternoon to get you to 5pm, or those 3-5 beers each evening to create a calm inside? I see ‘Liver Qi Stagnation’ all the time - it’s basically when your energy stops circulating throughout the body and this leads to a blockage of Qi or energy. We have several ways to get you back on track. Acupuncture- using four amazing Acupuncture points called the Four Gates. We can offer Chinese Patent herbs (Xiao Yao San), and look at your diet. Massage will help reset your body, and don’t forget to take time in nature and switch off, even for an hour. things to do Love art but aren’t an artist?

Arts Connect Inc is keen to encourage locals who are lovers of art, but not necessarily artists themselves, to get involved with the annual Sculpture on the Edge event. They have organised an Open Day for people who are interested in becoming a Volunteers in 2018. This could involve assisting guests with information during the event, or undertaking administrative tasks – there is a small job for all skill levels. The committee would love you to come along and meet them between 10.30am and noon at Spicers Tamarind Retreat on Friday October 20 to discuss how you can help, and enjoy a narrative about this year’s event from those who pulled it all together. Contact admin@artsconnectinc.com.au for more details or jump on to Eventbrite.

The Balkanics at Maleny

The Balkanics, who play high-energy music from the Balkans (especially Macedonia), will be performing at the Maleny RSL on Saturday October 28. The music is energetic, infectious and very danceable with traditional tunes, many of them Gypsy or Roma in origin, and their original compositions are inspired by many years of studying, playing and living these most vibrant of musical cultures. The Balkanics feature five accomplished musicians who have been playing together in different combinations for several decades. Tickets at the door are $20 or $15 (concession). Doors open 7pm doors for 7.30pm show, bar and delicious food available. The Balkanics include Anthony Pizzica (rezouki, tambura), Linsey Pollak (sax, gaida, clarini), Philip Griffin (electric bass, tambura), Ric Halstead (sax, flute) and Tunji Beier (drums). 28

Recollections, art workshops at Landsborough

As part of the ‘Recollections Landsborough’ series of artists’ workshops, three local Hinterland artists will be facilitating free or low cost weekend workshops at the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. On Friday October 27, visual artist Wayne Smith will present a free full day workshop exploring assemblage and collage to create an inspired and personal Memory Keeper, which will tell a story about place, experience, or feeling. A highly skilled artist with 30 years experience, Wayne is motivated by the natural environment. He will seek to encourage attendees (Ages 12+) to reflect on their inner being and memories and create a unique piece which can be as simple or complex as desired. Join Michele Deveze on Saturday October 28 (children aged 6+) and Sunday October 29 (adults) for a half day workshop which will create “stories without words” (cost $10). Using found objects, mementos and collage, participants will “tell a two dimensional story”. Michele will guide participants to develop a deeply personal symbology using a language of form, colour, found objects and innate response. The final workshop in the series, on Friday, November 3, will be conducted by Joy Joyce and will explore basic (and advanced if required) watercolour skills. Participants (Ages 15+, cost $15) will paint a realistic kookaburra as a finished work to take home with them and discover watercolour techniques they can develop and practice at home. Advanced and experienced watercolourists are also welcome, and Joy will offer her expert tuition accordingly. Places are limited. For bookings, please contact Michele at reddoorart@ bigpond.com.

Markets Village and Valley Market

The inaugural Eudlo School 'Village and Valley Market' will be held on Sunday November 26 between 9am and 2pm at the school on Rosebed Street, Eudlo, and all proceeds go to the Eudlo State School P&C Association. In 2018 the new Eudlo School 'Village and Valley Market’ will be held seasonally in March, June, September and December. This is a revamped version of the original Eudlo Village Market that was formerly held in the Eudlo Hall opposite the school, but a bigger location became necessary after five years. Eudlo School 'Village and Valley Market' is curated by experienced local operators, and stallholders and visitors alike will enjoy the venue and its excellent facilities and environment. The market is expected to have at least 80 stalls initially, increasing over time to reflect the expected interest in this Hinterland village market. Stalls will be located on the school oval and will include organic and biodynamic local fruit and veg, eclectic home and garden wares, crafted ceramics, timber, cloth, hide and macramé, silk, cotton and linen threads made into subtropical fashions by local designers, trendy house and courtyard plants, vintage, retro and second hand stuff, upcycled fashion and recycled plastics, alternative therapies, massage, spirituality and crystals. Entertainment will be varied and feature local musicians and there will be a variety of foods available. For application and stall enquiries, please text your email/postal address to 0402 334 199. Other enquiries to Annie on 5445 0599. You can also visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/EudloMarket/or Instagram: @villagevalleymarket_eudlo.

The Maleny Film Society will be showing Chilean film 'Neruda' this Saturday, October 21, at the Maleny Community Centre. 'Neruda', directed by Pablo Larrain (who recently directed his first English language feature, 'Jackie', about Jackie Kennedy, is a biographical drama about the popular poet and communist senator Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco), who opposes the fascist president in post-war Chile. Threatened with arrest, he goes underground. Refusing to live the life of a fugitive he taunts the government authorities by sometimes appearing in public or leaving evidence of his movements. He is pursued by the Chief of Police (Gael Garcia Bernal). Movie critic David Stratton described 'Neruda' as a smart, whimsical, extremely quirky and devilishly entertaining portrait of the poet, far from being a traditional biography but which joyfully celebrates the spirit of the man and his momentous times. Doors open for dinner at 6pm and it will be catered by Claudes Food, and the movie starts at 7.15pm. Tickets for non-members are adults $13, students with ID $8 and children under 16 $5. The general public can purchase at the door only.

Plant of the month

M.R.W.L. We care about our environment

Vanilla Lily Sowerbaea juncea Vanilla Lily is a delightful tufted plant found in sandy wallum heathland and sub-coastal and mountain heath communities. It generally grows in association with small wallum shrubs and sedges, but does not like to be overshadowed by taller plants. The leaves form blue-green, grass-like clumps and they grow to about 40cm tall. The roots are fibrous-fleshed and lack any tubers. The flowers are borne in dense heads of more than 20 individual flowers on a single, unbranched stem. They are a delicate mauve shade with pink bracts, and have a delicious vanilla perfume. In cultivation, it prefers a sunny, moist situation. It can be grown as a container plant, or in a rockery, or a terrarium, and is useful around the edges of a pond. Unfortunately it is only rarely seen in cultivation. Flowering occurs in spring, and a field of vanilla lilies is a sight to behold! It is a perfect time now after the recent rain to head out into the beautiful wallum areas of the Sunshine Coast and see if you can spot a Vanilla Lily or two.

Bush Food Banter

with Karen Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery

Small leaved tamarind Diploglottis campbellii Many of our local bushfoods are sour fruits that lend themselves to both sweet and savoury recipes. Small leaved tamarind, Diploglottis campbellii, is one such delicious fruit. This small rainforest tree is rare and endangered in its natural habitat of northern New South Wales and south eastern Queensland. It has, however, been grown commercially and has been widely planted, ensuring its survival. Small leaved tamarinds are attractive trees with glossy leaves, dense shade-producing crown and panicles of small creamy brown flowers. They have been successfully planted as street trees in some areas of Maleny. Producing large quantities of big fruit (sometimes up to 6cm across) makes this a perfect bushfood ingredient. The three-lobed fruit splits when ripe revealing aril encased seeds. The fleshy red, yellow or orange aril around the seed is the edible part and is refreshingly acid to taste. The aril makes great cordials, syrups, chutneys and sauces. Brightly coloured jams and jellies are also made from this beautiful fruit. Available at Forest Heart in 140mm pots. Karen and her husband Spencer Shaw run Forest Heart 20 Coral Street, Maleny Nursery in Maleny. Their nursery concentrates on local 5435 2193 native plants, bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit OPEN Tue - Fri 9am-5pm trees, non-invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden Sat 8am - 2:00pm and ecology education, books, DVDs, art and so much more.

It’s raining again!

With Spencer and Karen Shaw

After an all too long dry spell through July, August and September, at last that wet stuff that falls from the sky has returned. It’s in these long dry spells that we are reminded of the importance of mulching and planting to make the most of the benefits of what rain does fall, for the plant life around us that provides shade, beauty, food, habitat and quality of life for all life! With the benefits of this warm weather and rainfall, the Forest Heart EcoNursery plant range is growing all the time. Outstanding in the local natives we have a great range of Lillypillys and Bottlebrushes, Lomandra multiflora, Dianella longifolia, Walking stick palms, advanced nursery grown Crow’s Nest fern and many more. New in fruit trees this month we have Tamarind, Malabar Chestnut, Acerola Cherry, Non-Astringent Persimmon, Macadamia, Feijoa to name a few and that’s in addition to our great range of Citrus. Kangaroo Paw are flowering at the moment and we have a great range of colour available in these. Also looking good in our cultivar natives are the spectacular Ptilotus exaltatus – Phoenix, Flannel Flower, Brachyscomes, Thelionema’ s and Bulbine glauca. Make the most of this good weather and enjoy planting for your quality of life!

We deliver!

We deliver to more households than any other ‘local’ community newspaper We know the figure below represents the average distribution of this publication. No more, no less. It’s the absolute truth. How do we know? Well, we have our publication audited by the Circulations Audit Bureau (CAB). Why? Because we are committed to protecting our advertisers. The CAB audits our newspaper to make sure advertisers are getting all of what they are paying for. There is a lot of money at stake, but a surprisingly large number of advertisers blindly trust the numbers they are given by unaudited media. We just don’t understand why. Why would an advertiser risk paying too much for too little? Ask yourself this, what kind of media outlet wouldn’t want to be audited? As an advertiser, put your mind at rest, insist that you only use media that’s been audited. Like this one.

You can count on us.

Contributed by Graeme Glover Another great week of bowls and festivities at the club however the warm weather is really keeping numbers down on our Tuesday members pairs. As the jackpot is building make sure you turn up and be the possible winner. Sandra Kapertanic and Joe Walters played quality bowls to be the Tuesday winners. Wednesday night bowls produced some great bowls and a number of new faces to the club. Remember no one misses a game so turn up for a burger and bowl for $13, the best value entertainment on the hinterland. We had 5 games of triples and the winners were as follows, Sunstone, Handles, Krackerjacks, Bridge Club and Outlaws. Touchers went to Steve Ellet, Marg Ginns and Tom Ukola. The lucky draw was won by Scott Alexander, Allan Loynes, and Don Ginns and the raffle winner was Allan Lange. Scroungers was played on Friday on 4 rinks, some excellent bowls and very close games were had by all. Winners were as follows, Scott Alexander, Jim King, Ray Pantlin, and Joe Walters. Take advantage of the cooler afternoon and come and have a bowl and stay on for the members draw at 5.30pm. The rain was great for our gardens and surrounds which are looking magnificent thanks to the efforts of David Burgess and Roy Gesch, our hard working volunteers on greens maintenance. The down side was the washout for our first night of Saturday night bowls. Calling all Maleny folks … come on you young ones, have a night out at the club and bowl your friends over at Maleny Bowls Club. See you there.

Beerwah Ladies Bowls Club Contributed by Brenda Briese As I write this it is absolutely bucketing, with my dog beside me, panting with anxiety from the noise of the storm. But it is most welcome for not just golfers but for everyone. We've had quite a full week this week. Saturday, October 7 we played a Monthly Medal with 17 players. Once again congratulations go to Andrea Campbell with a remarkable 64 nett off a 10 handicap, (she's on a hot streak). Runner up was Ruth Machen 74 nett. Gross winner was Jo Malone 87. Pin shots: (2) Diane Flint (5) Michelle Leahy (16) Andrea Campbell (18) Lesley Eggleston. Putting: Andrea Campbell 24 putts. Ball run down went to 78 nett. Thursday, October, 12 we had 29 lovely ladies visit us from Virginia Golf Club. We had a total of 84 players and played a 2 Ball Best Ball Stableford. Div 1 (0-50 combined handicap) winners were Sylvia Jones (Virginia) and Cathy Stone 45 pts, runners up Beth Butler and Lea Doyle 43 pts, second runners up were Val Turner and Karen Gannon 42 pts. Div 2 winners were (51 + handicap) Gail Murphy and Felicity Smith (Virginia) 49pts, runners up Bridget John and Marie Oxlade 46 pts and second runners up Oriel Lyon and Josie Thistlethwaite 46 pts. Pin shots: (2) Andrea Campbell (5) Karen Madsen (16) J Baker (2nd shot 18) Silvia Jones, Margaret Zonca, J Hancock (all in the hole) Ball run down went to 42 pts. Thanks, to our Club Professional John Mellish, who generously sponsored all the prizes. Friday, October 13 we held the Zone Presidents Day. Being Black Friday many of the ladies dressed in the ‘Spooky’ costumes which added to the fun on the day. It was a 4 person Ambrose and there were teams from near and far. Three teams came from Tin Can Bay and many more clubs. Total players were 132 which is a very large field but it ran smoothly all day. The Gross Winners team comprised of players from different clubs with a score of 66. Nett Winners was a team from Maleny Golf Club with 60 nett. BRD 62 nett. I must add an omission from last week’s report, winner of Medal of Medallists for 2017 was Cathy Stone. Congratulations Cathy on a very successful year. Hope to see you on the fairways soon and I always think golf is more than a game it's a time to socialise.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Maleny Golf Club

Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wonders had a comfortable win over Murgon on Sunday to keep them in the hunt for the finals. The final score was 9 sets to 3. With the days ‘Wonder Stars’ being Frank and Caroline, taking home maximum points. Thanks to Craig and Sean for filling in. The Wonders will require a truly wonderful effort to make the Big Dance from here and it will all come down to their performance against Mooloolaba in the final round. Bring it on! A little different this week for Witta Wagtails with a slow start but they came good in the second half. The rallies were long, but unfortunately for the Wagtails, Nambour Heights were the winners on the day. Thanks to Claire, Sonia, Janet and Jill. The Wildcats were at home to Nambas Champers. It was close all day with extremely good hard hitting tennis. Unfortunately Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby were pipped at the post, with the score 4 sets each 31-35 games. The Whistlers had a competitive match against Caloundra Hot Chillies, with a great day of tennis and friendship, final score was 5 sets, 41 games Witta took 3 sets, 34 games Caloundra. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au

Contributed by Jenny Oxenham Tuesday, October 10: there was an 18 Hole Single Stableford Competition held at the Maleny Golf Club. First place went to Chris Pottinger with 43 points, runner-up went to Denis Hickey with 42 points and third place went to Hans Van Sanbeeck with 37 points on a count-back from Mark Deem and Gordon Ferguson, both with 37 points. BRD: Rod Waldron. NTP 3 - Denis Hickey. Friday, October 13: our usual Chook-Run was played, though with diminished numbers due to weather. First place went to Tom Kennedy with 24 points, runner-up went to Rod Waldron with 23 points and third place was a tie between Graham Thompson and Trevor Fairley, both with 19 points. A new barbeque has been installed which was provided by the Chook Run and I believe that Paul Lowe will be in charge of it. Saturday, October 14: there was an 18 Hole Single Stroke Competition played and first place went to Richard Owen with 66 nett, on a count-back from the runner-up Chris Pottinger, also with 66 nett, third place went to Jimmy Byun with 68 nett. The Gross Winner was Jack Day with 76 nett. NTP 3 and 5 - Corey Zammit and 12 and 14 Mike Finley. The Maleny Golf club is situated at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny and its natural beauty and environment offers nine holes of golf, each with its own challenge for golfers of all standards. Visitors are most welcome and for more information, please visit our web site www.malenygolfclub.com.au

Beerwah Golf Club Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Men's and medley results Two of our longer markers had a day out together last Wednesday to scatter the field, winning a medley two ball aggregate Stableford. Tom Olesen (31hcp) and Stan Horsburgh (28) scored a total of 84 points to beat John Runge/Ross Schultz by three. In third place two points further back was Barry McQuay/Alan Smerdon. NTP: 2 – Col Penney, 5 – Brian McConnell, 16 – Bob Kirkby, 18 – Ian Halliday. On Saturday more than half the morning field had started a single Stableford event when the heavens opened up in a big way. Very soon most of the putting greens were awash and, with a lot more heavy rain on the way, club captain Andrew Wills had no option but to cancel the day's competition. Around 70mm fell, making the course unplayable for both the afternoon field and Sunday's competition. At least our dams no longer look as though the tide is out and the rain is a good tonic for our newly renovated greens.

After so much planning the rain had to ruin our event. Thanks to all our members for being understanding and for the away teams that turned up. Lunch was great. In the end people only had to pay for their Saturday meal. We will be back bigger and better next year. Thanks to Rod and Wendy Platt, John and Noelene Annakin, Grant and Marilyn Podmore, Rowan and Karen Bruce, Greg and Shirley Hayes, Matilda Fruit Barn, Beerwah Newsagency, Setters Fruit Shop and the Black Squirrel Café who all donated raffle prizes. Just for Laughs

GC&MNews Crossword 614 1

On the day of my big job interview I woke up late. Frantically I threw on a suit. “Oh no” I thought. “My tie!” My dad was out of town and wasn’t there to help me, and for the life of me I did not know how to tie a tie! I grabbed a tie and ran out the door. “Excuse me sir,” I said to the crossing guard, “I have an important job interview, can you please help me make this tie?!”

ARIES March 21 - April 20 The New Moon is in your opposite sign of Libra. This emphasies new starts in the next few days’ activities. It addresses the need for new work, and if necessary, a new career. Others may attend to new health regimes. You could meet someone who will propose a monetary venture. It would be a good idea to be cautious. Use your intuition. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 There are new emotions coming up in your partnership sector and that should be positive, with a fair share of warm attention. The weekend sees Mars entering Libra and so you feel the urge to get moving on the job and some maybe for marathons! The New Moon brings new decisions to contemplate and deep conversation with a companion. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 The New Moon marks the beginning of some major change in your viewpoints. However, being in the sign of Libra, it may be wise to know that while impulsive moves can certainly get you out of a rut, that’s more likely to be just a momentary thrill. There will be new developments in your life concerning relatives and neighbours. Somebody may arrive from your past. CANCER June 22 - July 22 This New Moon, being in the sign of Libra, means that this week is all about money and hopefully you will have a lucky bonus. That may also mean a career change that brings you better benefits. This should make your self-esteem shine! Put into practice a constructive, stable plan, then finance it and reap long term benefits with a perfect connection.

Week Beginning 18/10/17

“Sure,” said the guard, “just lie down on this bench.” Well if someone was going to help me I wasn’t going to ask any questions. After he finished and the tie looked good I just had to ask why I had to lie down. “Well in my previous job I learned how to tie tie’s on other people when they were lying down,” he replied. What was your previous job?” I asked incredulously. “I ran a funeral home.”

LEO July 23 - August 22 The New Moon in Libra arrives in time for the weekend, so that all Leos should see themselves developing social ties with relatives and displaying quality mental capacity. Going with gut instincts means you can handle things with both poise and tact. Mars heats up your third sector for new contracts and the ability to debate well. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 If you are writing or investigating something, the New Moon, for the whole weekend, gets you to the heart of the matter with perspicacity. So, it will be a wonderful weekend about money and arranging all finances with beneficial mutual agreements. Don’t fall for anything fancy without good values. With Mars entering Libra you are assertive in requesting value. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 You may want to escape into the arms of a secret lover now that Scorpio arrives in your charting, which may stir up an old romance, or keep you captured in your imagination. This is the beginning of a fine obsession, and that may be going to movies, good restaurants, or arranging cruise ships. Your life changes in more ways than imagined now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 There is a conjunction of your sign to Mercury and then we see the positive benefits of Jupiter giving you twelve months of profound visions. The New Moon in Libra by the weekend draws you into the private recesses of your life. There is sudden change in your work, possibly a disruption. You meet someone upset about coming financial disorders.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 There is much to be gained over the next few days, especially the weekend, with the emphasis of the New Moon in Libra, bringing you social contracts and opportunities. You could possibly achieve the greatest success by formulating two or three plans and adding acquaintances into your inner circle. You should avoid being involved in half baked schemes. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 It may be time for you to look at your parents in a better and loving way as your sign has a tendency to reap karmic rewards. By this we mean that a government official could give you bad credit if you have not nurtured your parents correctly. You achieve the best success by developing new business tactics and mingling with important people. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The New Moon this week in the sign of Libra can bring a radical shift in your thinking and circumstances. There is still good news between Mercury and Jupiter that tells there is good focus on areas of agreement. You can trust gut reactions. The weekend starts a new career cycle for you and travel and education could be a part of this now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You may need a fresh start where joint finances, credit or a budget review is concerned. Under the New Moon in the sign of Libra you just have to make sure they are liberating, and not destabilising. Someone comes to you with news about a sensitive relationship. Spiritual feelings make you an excellent counsellor. Your best qualities of intuition operate.
