Direct rail case finalised
THE $14 million business case into the suitability of constructing the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line (DSCRL) has been completed. Upon completion in late December, it has now been handed on to the state and federal government for consideration. A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said both governments undergo a detailed process to approve a project. “Business cases include information that is commercial in confidence which if released prematurely or in-full, could influence commercial negotiations during a tender process,” they said. The federal government allocated $1.6 billion towards the DSCRL in their recent review of the infrastructure pipeline, which the state government acknowledges. It is unclear when the findings will be made public.

By Sonia Isaacs A GROUNDSWELL of community opposition to a proposed Bruce Highway Western Alternative (BHWA) route set to impact hundreds of Elimbah, Caboolture and Moodlu residents, is gaining remarkable traction. In only a matter of weeks, a well-executed grassroots campaign has secured support from 5,000 concerned petitioner’s. Following the shock announcement by Department of Transport and Main Roads in the weeks leading up to Christmas that up to 120 homes could be potentially resumed if the BHWA stage 4 route options go ahead, local residents have been working tirelessly around the clock to galvanise the community to present a unified show of strength rejecting the TMR proposal ahead of the February 9 community consultation cut-off date. Alongside launching the parliamentary petition in mid-December, principal petitioner, Jason Smith, said he was pleased to see the community rallying together to provide a strategic and pragmatic response

Local residents met with organisers and elected representatives in December 2023 to fight the proposal. He said the focus was now on obtaining between 6,00010,000 signatures before the petition closure in February. A goal of lodging up to 1000 written community submissions outlining concerns surrounding current routes and suggested alternative options was also on the table. Mr Smith said one of the key focuses in TMR selecting the current options was the assumption that all land east of the rail line will be residential and houses. “There are a number of generational farms on the east side of railway line at Elimbah that we know people

will not be willing to sell. We are also concerned that no budget has been allocated for resumptions and that compensation won’t occur in an adequate or timely manner,” Mr Smith said. A public Facebook group established as a community information and sharing platform for people impacted or opposed to the current Stage 4 route options has already amassed 1.9K members. Mr Smith said the Facebook group continued to grow, and members were now looking to broaden the message by approaching and including other interest groups that utilised the area
including mountain bikers and walking groups, as well as engaging conservation groups around potential environmental impact concerns. A working group of representative residents is looking to have a consultation session with TMR towards the end of January where they hope to discuss more desirable options for the community. Mr Smith said the group was calling for an alternative route that went further to the West and provided wellbalanced and long term regional growth options. He said judging by the response of gaining nearly
600 petition signatures at the group’s first ever weekly Caboolture market event on January 7 to raise awareness of the issue, it was apparent community sentiment strongly opposed the current TMR proposal. “The community will continue to make noise and ensure that we are heard by TMR and the government on this issue. We’ve seen a huge unification of the community in response to this proposal and we are determined to continue to raise awareness and fight back in an objective and pragmatic way to make a difference,” Mr Smith said. sonia@gcnews.com.au

I’m planning on beating that by winning the $100 million powerball on Thursday, but just in case I don’t, be rest assured I’d be generously sharing it far and wide with everyone I know. The scratch-it win is a great way to bring in the new year though. You can park any concerns over cost of living aside for a few months anyway. There’s always a sense of envy when people walk away with big wins, but I recall chapter in a book - Sapiens - about the human condition and hopefully it’s some comfort to know that no matter the wins (or losses) we have in life, and the subsequent highs or lows, the individual reverts back to their usual state of mind soon after. So if you’re a baked in miserable pessimist, you’ll just become a rich miserable pessimist. The latter sounds infinitely more

bearable, but you catch my drift. Of course if the GC&M News team were to win big, we would become rich unbridled optimists. In the meantime we’re merely unbridled optimists hitting the ground running for another jampacked year in the hinterland. We held a planning meeting at The Coffee Club last week and with the help of some excellent coffees, have mapped out the first half of 2024. Editorially it is shaping up to be a big year. The council election on March 16 will see a new Division 1 candidate at the very least, while the competition is heating up across Division 5 and we are guaranteed a new mayor as well. Keep an ear out for upcoming meet the candidate events. This election probably has more of a practical bearing on how we live our lives - rates, roads and rubbish - compared to the state election on October 31. For the vaguely interested it will still be a fascinating contest, with a new premier and three-term Labor government seemingly

in a bit of a fight to maintain government, if the polls are to be believed. You would really hope that by then there would have been a decision made on the Sunshine Coast Direct Rail Line. It’s become political enough (read p20 for Andrew Wallace’s reply to Jason Hunt’s column in the last edition of 2023 for a taste). Let’s just hope whichever way it turns, it doesn’t drag on to become an election issue. One of the bigger stories over the break was the weather - or forecasting of it. Is there anyone else wondering how it is that with all this technology, brilliant minds, AI, and a few meters, that punters might as well just stick their head out the window if they want to know what’s happening with the weather. Days of inaccurate forecasts were driving me nuts. To top a summer of nonsense off, a meteorologist then came out and said it was a myth that El Nino meant drier weather conditions. Brilliant, Mitch thanks for the update.

New candidate for Division 1 Baringa local ‘friendly fire’ for local elections

A BEERWAH man has had a lucky break to kick start 2024, after an Instant Scratch-It Christmas gift scored him the top prize win of $100,000. The winner redeemed the $5 instant game ticket from the Beerwah Newsagency, which has never had someone claim a top prize or division one win from a scratch-it. Beerwah Newsagency owner, Les Townsend,
said it was exciting not only for the winner, but the team as well. “We were lucky enough to share in the winning locals’ excitement when they presented the ticket in store,” he said. “We are just so incredibly happy for them. “They are regulars so we can’t wait to see their bright faces visit again soon.” The lucky winner, who has chosen to remain
anonymous, said he was feeling great after the big win, but wasn’t sure what he would spend his win on. “It’s a wonderful start to the year!” he said. “One hundred thousand dollars! By Kirra Livingstone THE battle for Division 1 is now a two-way fight after Baringa local Kristy TaylorRose nominated last week. The nomination pits Ms Taylor-Rose head-to-head with popular hinterland businesswoman, Jenny Broderick. Both candidates will be vying for the vacant councillor position after incumbent Rick Baberowski announced his retirement late last year. Div 1 takes in the fast-growing Caloundra south area with parts of the hinterland including Beerwah, Landsborough, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum. Ms Taylor-Rose said she was campaigning on creating better infrastructure for the booming coast as well as environmental issues. “The main things I want to do if elected is to protect the environment, improve our maintenance and services, that just comes back to my background in construction, better infrastructure and roads for all our areas,” she said. “I also want to get back to basics
with working closely with the communities in my division, and listening to my neighbours about what’s actually needed, so I can put that infront of the council.” Kristy is involved with volunteering throughout the community. “I’m heavily involved in sports, a lot of volunteering that I’m doing at the moment, and just giving back to the community,” she said. “I volunteer for the Sunshine Coast Council and am involved in all the events they hold, I volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and I’m the president of the P&C at the Baringa Secondary College.”
The new candidate happens to be friends with Ms Broderick and said if the division was split - a potential outcome for future election - they would do a great job at leading each Aura and the Hinterland communities. However, Kristy stressed why people should vote for her as the division’s next councillor. “I’m very genuine, I’m basically like your next door neighbour, I’m a down to earth sort of person,” she said. “I’m normal, I don’t have the council or politics background, but I’m willing to listen to everybody and find out what I can do for them. “I’m very approachable and humble, I’m not a person that dictates titles and things like that, everyone works together hence why my slogan is ‘change starts with you’. “If you vote for me, we all change together because it’s not just one person running for council, it’s a whole community running for council.” kirra@gcnews.com.au

A push for an ‘aggregated, inclusive’ Maleny park gains momentum By Sonia Isaacs ADVOCATES for a multigenerational district park in Maleny are investigating utilising and linking additional park locations in Maleny. The idea pivots from a single location at The Precint, but is aimed at ensuring the timely delivery of an all-inclusive community play space. The concept of developing an ‘Aggregated District Park’ would see various sections of land linked to create a District Park whole, and Maleny Park for All
(MPA) spokesperson, Rossi Moore, said she was keen for Council to consider the option ahead of community consultation for the new Maleny Community Precinct Plan. Ms Moore said the group was currently developing a visual interpretation to illustrate the potential of reactivating underutilised space at Mary Allen Waters Park and Bicentennial Park to create further links with existing community infrastructure. She said the site could easily link with pre-existing facilities and
pathways, and its close proximity to town and community facilities such as the Neighbourhood Centre, Community Centre, Library and Showgrounds provided additional advantages. She said the site area already had established trees and shade, and would have access to existing water and power utilities, as well as offering multiple modes of transport options, accessibility for all ages and abilities in a centrally located, visible and safe location. “We believe that there

lies a great opportunity to create something dynamic and re-activate an otherwise under-utilised space to further compliment facilities at The Precinct. We would be keen to engage on further discussions with Council on this community proposal,” Ms Rossi said. Division 5 Councillor, Winston Johnston, said at the present time planning was well advanced to develop the community proposal for a new Maleny Community Precinct Plan with community engagement scheduled to
commence in May-June 2024. He said funding was currently geared towards developing a District Level park at the Maleny Community Precinct location. “It is possible that there will not be a sufficient single area on The Precinct for a district level park so it is possible that it may be in a number of different locations, however at the present time funding is focused around developing The Precinct area,” Cr Johnston said. sonia@gcnews.com.au

Hooners exposed by taskforce POLICE are investigating a number of alleged hooning and anti-social behaviour in the region, and has charged a number of people sharing more than 50 offences. Officers from the Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol, Tactical Crime Squad, along with the Child Protection Investigation Unit, executed search warrants on January 10. From the searches, it will be alleged that officers located and seized drugs, drug utensils, large quantities of money, digital devices and vehicles. Of the local hinterland charges, there were three Beerwah residents charged with a number of offences. A 19-year-old Beerwah woman was charged with four counts of type 1 notices served re dangerous operation, one count each of possess dangerous drug, possess utensil, possess things, supply drug and issued eight TINS. A 16-year-old Beerwah girl was charged with one count each of possess dangerous drug and possess utensil. A 22-year-old Beerwah man was charged with one count of dangerous operation, six counts of summary offences act, issues one TIN and one type 1, 90-day impoundment. A 26-year-old Mons man was charged with 22 offences.

Troubled wave park property set to hit the market by end of month By Kirra Livingstone A 25-hectare parcel of land earmarked for a $350m hinterland wave park is set to hit the market by the end of the month. Property owner, Nurrowin Pty Ltd, was forced into external administration in December 2023 owing about $10 million to creditors. While the value of the land is unknown, a 31-hectare property two kilometres from Beerwah’s town centre sold in late 2023 for $21m. The company purchased the land at Glenview on Steve Irwin Way in 2015 and
despite releasing plans for the project, including a $40 million wave park and 160villa resort as early as 2016, the concept never advanced to construction. The long-delayed project was further stalled when Sanad Capital – a Nurrowin subsidiary – appealed a decision by the Sunshine Coast Council to approve a rival wave park at Glass House Mountains. A judgment by the Planning and Environment Court in June last year dismissed that appeal, with Sanad saying it was “disappointed” by the decision.

Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce president, Tamara Hazelden, said the demise of the wave park was disappointing for the region but that the property was to be sold with approvals in place meaning the area could still be home to a large-scale tourism project. “The cancellation of the wave park could be seen as a missed opportunity for the community to benefit from a large-scale tourism development project,” she said. “But the availability of the land could present
an opportunity for potential investors to pursue alternative tourism ventures. “This could lead to the development of new attractions or facilities that could draw visitors to the area and stimulate economic activity in the Glasshouse region.” Following a long court case between Sanad, and Surf Parks Australia planning to build in Glass House Mountains, with the former appealing council’s decision to approve the second wave park, the region will now only see one
wave park go ahead. Despite this loss in local tourism opportunities for Glenview, the community will still reap the benefits from the other wave park in the Glass House Mountains. “I understand our region still has a large-scale tourism project to be built along the Bruce which will stimulate the local economy,” she said. “It will be great to see what happens with this parcel of land after all these years. Sunny outcome for our national icon across Sunshine Coast region The Federal government is investing almost $200,000 to improve koala habitat, and gain better understanding of the koala population in the Sunshine Coast region. The funding will be used for activities including planting over 4,000 koala friendly trees, connecting habitat to create safer passages for koalas to breed and forage. The funding will also focus on removing weeds that are a fire risk and prevent koalas from moving freely.
The funds will also be used to assist facilitate workshops to increase community engagement and koala sightings. The project delivered by Sunshine Coast Council will also use acoustic recording and drones to search for koalas, as well as using detector dogs and scat analysis to identify disease and the diet of local koalas. It will also build community and First Nations capacity to care for their local koalas. Sadly, koalas are currently
listed as endangered in Queensland, NSW and the ACT. This investment is part of the Government’s more than $76 million Saving Koalas Fund to better protect koalas and repair koala habitat. Minister for the Environment and Water, the Hon Tanya Plibersek, said, “No-one wants to imagine an Australia without the koalas. We are making sure our kids and grandkids will still be able to see koalas in the wild.” “Communities across

A PROPOSAL to build 15 units over two lots on Peachester Rd at Beerwah is being considered by the Sunshine Coast Council. The proposal, lodged last week by ARC Planning, is to construct the 15 units over two properties at 62 and 64 Peachester Rd. The proposal includes two, two-storey residential townhouses, one with seven dwellings and the second with eight. The properties are about 350m from Beerwah Village Marketplace with each dwelling containing a garage and carport, private open space and landscaping. An original application for a material change of use to the properties lapsed last year.

Organisers are expecting similar crowd numbers to previous years of between 800-1000 people, with the event a unique opportunity to gather together as community, share knowledge and celebrate connections. Featuring Bunya feasting, competitions, bushfoods, bush medicine, challenges and games, dance, ceremony, fire, yarning, workshops and more, Bunya Dreaming celebrates both the annual harvest and deep-rooted cultural significance of the Bunya Tree (Araucaria bidwillii); a species that holds great importance in local Kabi Kabi Culture. Kabi Kabi Elder and Bunya dreaming founder, Aunty Beverly Hand, said
traditionally for thousands of years, aboriginal communities had gathered around the Bunya pine to celebrate the harvest and share their connection to the physical and spiritual landscape of the region. She said since 2007, her vision had been to create a safe, sustainable and selfsufficient event that brought a modern interpretation of the gathering back to the Sunshine Coast. Community club showcase at showgrounds By Sonia Isaacs THE ever popular Hinterland Aussie Day Expo 2024 is set to attract a large crowd as the community clubs showcase and family fun day returns to its previous full capacity format at the Maleny Showgrounds. The free, all ages event on Friday, January 26, will feature around 50 community clubs and organisations presenting a unique ‘meet, see and try’ day out, with all activities and stallholders showcased once again in the one, easy to access location at the showgrounds. Sponsored by the Maleny District Sport and
Recreation Club (MDSRC), this will be the first time since 2020 that the Expo will be firing up again in its original one location format. Organisers are excited to welcome people back to enjoy a huge variety of games, activities, music and live performances alongside a smorgasbord of local sport, recreation and service club information stands and marquees. Expo Committee chair, Rick Vickers, said organisers were thrilled to be able to offer visitors an opportunity to have fun, discover new local leisure and recreational activities, meet
new people and become further involved in their community. “This year we are hoping to attract up to 1000 people, and we encourage people and families to come along to find out more about what opportunities exist to become involved or find out more about our wide variety of local organisations, sporting clubs and groups,” Rick said. The morning will kick off at 7am with the Apex Breakfast followed by the Flag Raising Ceremony at TS CENTAUR and New Citizens’ Ceremony at 8.15am. The morning’s Australia Day events will be followed
by the official start of the Hinterland Aussie Day Expo festivities, family games and activities that will run from 9am-12.30pm. Kids are invited to enter the free ticket prize draw with a heap of cool prizes to be won, as well as the ‘Expo Passport Draw’ with details to both competitions at the event entry stands. Free entry for all means
everybody can come along and join in and try their hand at some great traditional style games and age category events such as the popular gumboot throw, thong relay, and tug-o- war. Or even the ‘old school’ egg and spoon races. There will also be a fun family friendly obstacle race to try, or have a go and see if sports like cricket, pickleball, croquet, netball or tennis take your fancy. Volunteers from the Rural Fire Service will be onsite with their truck, and the afternoon will feature a diversity of interesting and engaging displays and including live tai chi and taekwondo demonstrations and performances from Scottish dancers and pipe band, The Maleny Singers, local Ukulele group plus heaps more.
THE Sunshine Coast has attracted 4.2 million visitors in the 12 months to September 2023, racking up $4.2 billion in overnight visitor expenditure (OVE) according to Tourism Research Australia in their latest National Visitor Survey (NVS). OVE in the Sunshine Coast compared to the previous year period, was up by 11.8 per cent and 53.7 per cent ahead of 2019. The Coast saw a record 2.5m holiday visitors within the 4.2m who visited the region, which was up by 1.7 per cent from the year before, and 12.9 compared to 2019. To add to the positive findings from the NVS, visitors also stayed longer in the region, with over 15.3m nights recorded, up 5.6 per cent year on year (YOY). Sunshine Coast’s success in tourism in the last year has been credited to the regional airline based on the Sunshine Coast, Bonza Airlines, driving an increase in interstate visitation.

Andrew McLean and Simon Raby SIMON Raby took up an offer to hire an eBike from Maleny bike co-op and has ridden around 10,000 kilometres in 18 months commuting to work. “The e-bike ‘flattens’ out the hills and, yes, I’m grateful for the motor after a days work!” Simon said. “I live 12.5kms from town, I can get to town and back twice on one charge.”
It costs about 10c to charge an e-bike, so it has cost him about $20 in electricity and about $300 in maintenance to travel his 10,000 kilometers. A new car on finance would have cost him $27,000. However it benefits people’s health too. “My health and fitness have never been better, I was in good shape in my 20’s, but

I wasn’t well - physically or mentally,” he said. “I ditched the car and was lucky enough to be chosen for the Maleny eBike pilot programme. “18 months of riding instead of driving helped me to turn that emotional and mental battle around.” The eBikes were supplied by Eco Villages Australia.
Solo exhibition inspired by nomad life By Sonia Isaacs HINTERLAND artist Laurie Catlin will be the first cab off the rank for Vianta Arts Beerwah’s 2024 Artist Exhibition series. Featuring 17 mixed medium works, Laurie said she was excited to be showcasing her first solo exhibition. Since 2022, Laurie has embraced a grey nomad lifestyle which has allowed her further exploration of her love for painting the Australian Bush on the road. Her travels have also prompted a renewed excitement and appreciation for working with oils and plein-air painting (painting outdoors).
“As a grey nomad I visited remote areas of the country and experimented with new mediums and techniques to broaden my practice, such as oil paint with palette knives, acrylic pouring, mixed media, and abstracts to name a few,” Laurie said. “I believe Art is for everyone whether as a practitioner or admirer. Without colour life can be very dark.” Laurie said she started dabbling in art projects back in the folk-art craze of the 90’s in Perth WA. She explained she got more serious about painting in 2009 following a major white water rafting accident, which left her with hip and spinal injuries, and unable to work.
“Painting then became my solace, and essentially my happy place where I could escape the pain and confines of my new reality whilst recovering,” she explained. Over the years, Laurie has focused mainly on painting in acrylics concentrating on crazy fantasy art for her grandchildren or broad landscape subjects. Her ‘grey nomad’ adventures have led her to explore a wider range of mediums, some of which will be on display at the Vianta arts exhibition which runs until March 3. Runners take a stand for mountain run event Run Queensland’s ultra fundraiser sucess gets standing ovation
By Sonia Isaacs SUNSHINE Coast’s very first backyard Ultra, the Glasshouse Standing was a runaway success with 116 competitors welcoming in the New Year in unprecedented style. Dedicated runners battled it out over an almost 24 hour period to compete in the inaugural Wild Horse Mountain event. Also a fundraiser, the event provided a unique and exhilarating opportunity for the Sunshine Coast running community to welcome in 2024. Run Queensland organiser, Brett Standring, said he was blown away by the interest shown for the event which also raised over $10,000 in support of the ‘Save our Glass House Mountains’ (SOGHM) campaign. “We really appreciated the incredible efforts of everyone who participated, everyone who volunteered or helped to put this event together, as well as everyone who came along over the 24 hours to support the runners. It was fantastic to see people challenge themselves while also
supporting a great cause. It was an awesome way to bring in the New Year and we’re keen to do it again!” Brett said. By all accounts conditions for the inaugural event were tough as competitors braved fatigue, rain and very humid weather to ‘run for two years’ as they raced over New Year’s Eve and into 2024 in a battle against time (and tiredness) to conquer the 6.7km loop within the hour – every hour until ultimately only one runner remained to claim the ‘golden horseshoe’. Gympie based competitor and ‘last man standing’ was Ryan Crawford who completed an impressive 23 loops of the circuit before being declared the winner. Ryan said although an experienced Ultra runner, he found the 154km run ‘quite tough’ with the additional challenges of hot conditions even throughout the night, trip hazards and mud. “Glasshouse Standing was a fantastic event and I was also glad to support the fight to save the Glass House Mountains. These events for me are never about just winning, they are

about challenging myself to constantly push my limits. When I line up to any particular event it’s about creating a mindset that is prepared for anything that
stands in my way. We are all challenged in life in so many different aspects so be sure you are strong enough to be unstoppable!” Ryan said. Brett said witnessing the epic efforts and heart-warming stories of competitors made the event unforgettable.
“Witnessing the competitors push their limits was an absolute honour. Get ready because we will finish 2024 and welcome 2025 in the same spirit! For those that embarked on this journey for the first time this year, you’ve got plenty of time to stratergize, train and smash your goals!” Brett said.
Maleny half pipe dream a reality By Sonia Isaacs WHILE plans towards a Maleny Skatepark rebuild continues to progress, the newly constructed half pipe has now been completed with community advocates welcoming the upgrade. Following months of persistent petitioning to Council to have the aging community facility revamped, lead petitioner, Amy Wilson, said she had been pleased by Council’s engagement and community consultation to date. Ms Wilson said she sincerely hoped that going forward, funding would be allocated to enable more of the facility rebuild. She said a community consultation process to discuss three possible design options had already taken place, and there was also a possibility of having additional seating options considered depending on future financial capacity. Ms Wilson said she anticipated an update on the project status by March 2024.

Held from December 27th until January 1, the event delivered a packed program of music, workshops, talks and engaging experiences from over 2,000 artists, performers, musicians and presenters.
The 2023/2024 festival was a wonderful gathering that despite hot, humid and wet conditions, saw crowds of over 100,000 turn up to immerse themselves in the colour, diversity and fun of the festival.

Exhibition is an ode to landscape
Beerwah artist to exhibit at Pomona BEERWAH landscape artist, Roger Callen, will be exhibiting at the Railway Station Gallery in Pomona, with a range of new and older pieces that span his artistic career. Roger has always had a creative flare, whether it was his way with words crafting intriguing poetry, first starting 20 years ago, to his abstract and realism art works in various mediums, starting in 2010. His inspiration comes from the natural world around him, particularly the Glass House Mountains. “I have always loved nature and landscape, and after many years in geology following that interest, took up the theme in full time art practice,” he said. “I have an equal love of plants and wildlife which is also expressed
in the art. “I feel strongly that our current lifestyles lead us to forget our debt to nature and how it sustains us, and the way the Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara peoples cared for it.” The art exhibition will include works painted on a range of mediums from paper, linen and even flattened cardboard boxes, and some have semi-

sculptural elements. “The works are mostly based on local places, but include some from Adyamathanha/ Malyangabba country in SA (Lake Frome) and beyond, and Barundji, Budjari Kullilla and Wangkumara country in southwest Qld (Hungerford, Jackson and Grey Range),” he said. “I often use collage and local found materials and work from sketches and photos or on site.” Roger also thanked the wonderful staff at the Pomona community gallery, for their “excellent assistance and delightful venue”. You SAID IT.... Vandalism must stop
THE recent vandalism of play equipment in Beerwah council parks has been a matter of concern. One hopes the perpetrators have been brought to justice and placed in rehab programs. Unfortunately similar vandalism is also occurring in our bushland parks, such as the Upper Coochin Creek Bushland Park which stretches from Beerwah High to the Beerwah recycle station. This vandalism consists of cutting bike trails, including the felling of trees, and has occurred many times. Unlike play equipment, such damage cannot be easily undone and is far more expensive and time consuming to restore. Further, removal of such vegetation has wide ranging consequences as trees are carbon sinks, absorbing pollutant CO2 and providing us with the oxygen we breathe – every tree should be treasured. Council has spent many thousands on maintenance, surveys and weed and plant upgrades on this reserve, which contains a number of rare and endangered species and is also an unusual example of lowland gallery vine forest. Such forest has almost disappeared from the area, which makes it all the more important as a community asset. For many years a group affiliated with the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network looked after this reserve and assisted in its maintenance, including plantings from grants. School groups as far away as China have

contributed. That work and council’s expenditure is now being negated. It is high time council put a stop to this and brought these vandals to justice also. They should be required to take part in the rehab, undo the damage, and pay costs. Mountain bike riding is a great sport which my sons and grandsons take part in. Legitimate clubs carry out the sport in a responsible way, and any community group can approach council to establish such trails in legitimate areas. It is sad that some adult members of the community consider themselves above the law and continue to ruin our valuable assets which council has had the forethought to preserve for future generations and our well-being. Our current deputy mayor, Rick Baberowski, who is also councillor for Beerwah area, has done a great job over the years in promoting such reserves and supporting community groups that help in their rehab and maintenance. It is hoped his good work will continue after his pending retirement and action be taken on this current matter. Roger Callen Beerwah

All we hear about these days is how we should hang our heads, the need to tear it down, as none of our past was of any good and we are to be ashamed. In my lifetime some 6 million Jews were slaughtered by Hitler and his Nazi ideology. My parents and their generation fought and died in a war that ensured we had a future free of this depravity. atrocities to Penny (got it) Wong who somehow believes that chopping off women’s breasts and cutting off babies heads with a shovel should be considered of equal depravity to a country trying to defend itself simply reflects the total abrogation of the values that I thought Australia stood for. Our “#Me Too” sisterhood is a fundamental moral failure seemingly promoting that we should believe all women except Jewish women. Their deafening silence on the atrocities inflicted on Jewish women by Hamas seems to shout “practice #Me Too unless you are a Jew.” In Gaza fewer than 20% of women are allowed to work. More than 20% of women are married under the age of 17. There is no Pride Week as being gay is punishable by death. Unbelievably our universities after some considerable pressure are grudgingly supportive of Israels right to defend itself yet Jews are afraid to identify themselves on campus and in our schools. I cannot comprehend the moral bankruptcy of those Australians who tacitly support all the depravity that Hamas represents with their bleating’s of “From the river to the sea…” How do you justify tying children to their parents and then burning them alive? I am deeply, deeply angry. What has happened to you Australia? Where are your values? For the first time in my eighty years, I am ashamed to call myself Australian. Cracking the code for love on the crocs UniSC researchers think they’ve cracked the code for crocodile ‘love language’. This is after popping a couple of microphones into an Australia Zoo enclosure. Let’s hope they’re not looking to publish this in Nature journal, because here’s a peer review: What a croc. The research somehow concludes that ‘hissing’ and ‘grunting’ noises created by one of the world’s most feared creatures is not,
as commonsense would suggest, a big ‘bugger off or I’m going to eat your face’, but in fact it’s a little romantic foreplay. Apparently crocs seek consent as well. Lols. Even funnier is the finding that the noises and head slapping are made in ‘mixed context’, meaning it’s extremely hard to tell if it’s naturally aggressive way, or in fact you’re about to be swept off your feet for a lifetime of webbed bliss.

do it in a heatwave. There were five 16 year olds though so with everyone pitching in, the whole ordeal was pretty straightforward … said no adult ever. Three hours later and I actually thought I could be having a heart attack. Have you ever camped with multiple teenagers? Pass. I’d rather spend every waking moment trying to keep a toddler from drowning.

Elected REPS Show us the money by Andrew Wallace Federal Member for Fisher THE Sunshine Coast community is beyond exhausted and fed up with the Sunshine Coast rail project, which will see 37km of passenger rail from Beerwah to Maroochydore, being used as a political football. But it comes as no surprise the State Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt would focus on me instead of advocating for his community in the most recent edition of the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News (Dec 19). The State Labor Government have form for choosing political games over delivering essential infrastructure projects for the Sunshine Coast. It’s straight out of the same playbook as that of his mate and former Transport Minister Mark Bailey. Glasshouse Country and Maleny News readers will be far too familiar with the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade – State Labor only stumped up 30 per cent of the funding and reduced the scope of the works accompanied by a belligerent Bailey who had to be dragged to the table kicking and screaming. Let’s be very clear on the facts on the two-decadelong drawn-out Sunshine Coast Queensland Rail proposal, a 100 per cent Queensland Government responsibility. The Beattie Labor
Government set aside the CAMCOS corridor for the project more than 20 years ago. Labor has been in power for more than 22 of the past 25 years. In a speech in 2005, then Premier Peter Beattie said “We have $1 billion for a new passenger rail service between Beerwah, Caloundra, and Maroochydore, giving Sunshine Coast its first passenger rail service along the coast. The rail line will reach Caloundra in 2014/15 and Maroochydore by 2020.” As for my advocacy for better roads and rail as a Federal parliamentarian, it started with my maiden speech in 2016. “If I can achieve one thing in this place, my No. 1 priority for the people of Fisher will be better road and rail infrastructure.” And ever since those first words in Parliament House, I have dragged every Minister up to the Sunshine Coast spruiking the importance of better infrastructure for our rapidly growing region and secretly hoping they would all get stuck on the Bruce Highway car park to prove my point. It was a proud moment then, alongside Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien, to announce $1.6 billion of federal funding for Sunshine Coast Rail in the March 2022 Federal Budget. The $1.6 billion was retained in two ensuing Federal Labor Budgets. Nearly 22 months later, the State Labor Government
has not contributed a single cent to the construction of the Sunshine Coast Rail project. The Federal Government’s 90-day Infrastructure Review put the project at risk, with $1.44 billion set aside, mainly because of the lack of State Government funding. Which remains the position we are still in despite false claims of ‘huge news’ in November of then Deputy Premier Steven Miles securing federal funding while nothing actually changed. We are less than nine years away from the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and I’m told this project will take eight years to build. Any further dithering and delays and the absence of state funding only puts this project at further risk of being completed before the Olympic cauldron is lit. The Sunshine Coast’s message to State Labor is very clear: get on with the construction of Sunshine Coast Rail. State Labor’s political games have cost the region too much already. As Mr Hunt continues to be the mouthpiece for George Street instead of speaking up for his community, bring on the State election in October. In the words of Tom Cruise in the movie Jerry Maguire, “Show us the money Jason Hunt”.

Thank you for providing further feedback on shaping Maple Street as part of the Maleny Streetscape Project between July and August 2023. We sought further feedback on the concept design through an online survey, workshop and conversations. Overall, there was strong support for the project and the design reflects the community’s values and vision for Maple Street. AS mosquito season ramps up in Queensland, Chief Health Officer, Dr John Gerrard, urged residents to be extra vigilant against bites. “Mosquito numbers increase in warmer weather, and recent rain events have created perfect breeding grounds,” Dr Gerrard said. “Simple steps like applying insect repellent, wearing loose, lightcoloured clothing to cover up arms, legs and feet and using other insecticidebased mosquito control devices, can help.” Dr Gerrard said it was also important to take measures around the home to prevent mosquitoes breeding. “Empty any containers holding water around your home at least weekly and ensure flyscreens are in good order” he said. Dr Gerrard said that Ross River virus infections remain the most common mosquito-borne disease reported in Queensland, accounting for the majority of notifications.
Holiday season can be tough SUNSHINE Coast Health’s Mental Health and Specialised Services team is reminding people to make time for themselves and their health and wellbeing. Clinical Director of Mental Health and Specialised Services, Dr Chris Lilley, suggests prioritising wellbeing essentials such as getting enough sleep, considering nutrition, exercising, and getting outside. “We are with our family and although we want that to be pleasurable, it’s possible that people can get into arguments, it’s important for people to think about opportunities to have time for yourself. Helplines such as Lifeline, or Queensland Health’s phone line 1300 MH CALL to talk to a mental health professional are always available if necessary,” Dr Lilley said.
Important piece in the puzzle of love revealed Love activates pathways in brain associated with positive feelings
LOVE is blind, the saying goes, and thanks to a worldfirst Australian study, we are now a step closer to understanding why. It is well known that romantic love changes the brain, releasing the so-called love hormone oxytocin, responsible for the euphoria we feel when falling in love. Now, researchers from the ANU, University of Canberra and University of South Australia have measured how a part of the brain is responsible for putting our loved one on a pedestal in that first flush of romance. In the world’s first study investigating the link between the human brain’s behavioural activation system (BAS) and romantic love, researchers surveyed 1556 young adults who identified as being “in love”. The survey questions focused on the emotional reaction to their partner, their behaviour around them, and the focus they placed on their loved one above all else. It turns out that when we are in love, our brain reacts differently. ANU lead researcher and PhD student,
Adam Bode, says the study – recently published in the journal Behavioural Sciences – sheds light on the mechanisms that cause romantic love. “We actually know very little about the evolution of romantic love,” Bode says. As a result, every finding that tells us about romantic love’s evolution is an important piece of the puzzle that’s just been started.” University of Canberra academic and UniSA Adjunct Associate Professor, Dr Phil Kavanagh, says the study shows that romantic love is linked to changes in behaviour as well as emotion. “We know the role that oxytocin plays in romantic love, because we get waves of it circulating throughout our nervous system and blood stream when we interact with loved ones,” Dr Kavanagh says. “The way that loved ones take on special importance, however, is due to oxytocin combining with dopamine, a chemical that our brain releases during romantic love. Essentially, love activates pathways in the brain associated with positive feelings.”

The International Women’s Day (IWD) Fun Run event not only raises awareness and much-needed funds for people with breast cancer, but also offers a sense of camaraderie to those touched by the disease. Last year saw over 20,000 people participate in the 5km Brisbane IWD Fun Run, with an additional 3,300 regional participants across Queensland running in their own fun run events. Dr McMahon said breast imaging had progressed tremendously since the introduction of fullfield digital mammography in Australia in 2011. In the next few months, Queensland X-Ray will launch contrast enhanced mammography, with a new GE Pristina mammogram machine. She urged all eligible women to undergo breast screening and to prioritise their health. “Many women fear

It’s the perfect time to embrace new opportunities, to challenge yourself and to step out of your comfort zone, and look to new possibilities with God’s help. Remember life is not all about mountaintop experiences. There will be valleys, hill climbs, and walking hard yards and going the distance. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, now is the time to do it. If there’s a skill you’ve always wanted to learn, now is the time to learn it. If there’s a dream you’ve always wanted to chase, with God’s help now is the time to chase it. Every year, we are gifted with 365 new opportunities. Each day is a chance to make a change, to make a difference, to make a memory. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by. Grab them with both hands and make the most of them. Thomas Edison, one of the greatest inventors of all time, didn’t have it easy, despite challenges and failures, he didn’t let that deter him. He famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” It was this relentless determination that led him to invent the electric light bulb, among other things. Edison’s story is a reminder to keep trying, keep pushing and resolve to never quitting.

Many thanks to Wallace and his crew of helpers. Good rain has meant that the grass has done well through the top dressing and social play resumed early in the new year with favourable comments about the result. The other major improvement carried out was the installation of an access gate on the roadside of lawn 2, making it easier to get to the facilities in the showground. Breeding ground for stars
National deaf games on coast
THE Sunshine Coast has come out on top in the bid to secure the hosting rights of the 2026 Australian Deaf Games. Tourism and Events Queensland and the Sunshine Coast Council made a joint application to host the prestigious multi-sport event, which will include basketball, darts, swimming and tennis. More than 1000 athletes will partake in the Australian Deaf Games, which Deaf Sports Australia General Manager, Phil Harper, said will benefit the community greatly through promoting inclusivity and breaking the stigma of disabilities. Sunshine Coast Council Economy Portfolio Councillor, Jason O’Pray, said hosting these games would put the Sunshine Coast on the map to host all event types. The games will inject millions into the local economy, and is expected to kick off around June 2026. The opening ceremony will be held at the Caloundra Indoor Sports Stadium.
P4AC posted due to weather THE Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association’s annual play 4 a cause (P4AC) masters tournament, was postponed due to dangerous weather forecast for South East Queensland. P4AC has been run by the club for the last few years with much fundraising success towards cancer. The tournament was originally scheduled to take play on January 13-14 in Mooloolah Valley, however, due to relentless rain, their facilities are unusable and unplayable. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause, and we sincerely apologise,” the club said. “However, the safety and well-being of our participants, attendees, vendors and volunteers are our top priorities, and we believe that this decision is in the best interest of all involved.” New dates have not been announced yet, however teams will be informed once they have been confirmed.
Club is proud of prodigies THE strength and depth of the Beerwah Bulldogs is on display both at home and nationally with a number of stars set to shine in the NRL and NRLW next year. Alongside the club’s first NRL player - Canterbury Bulldogs co-captain, Reed Mahoney - Mitch Jennings, Jackson Kite and the club’s second NRLW player are set to run out in the national competitions.
New women’s squad coach says future is looking bright By Kirra Livingstone NEW Beerwah Bulldogs Open Women’s team coach, Ray Ballantyne, says he is looking for the team to “step it up” in the 2024 season. With 20 years of coaching experience under his belt and a competitive flare Ray said he was excited about the team’s potential, which made the finals in 2023. Ray has been with the Bulldogs since 2015, and has coached at least one junior team every year since, but this will be his first senior squad appointment. Previous to moving to Queensland, he also coached many teams in the Canberra area, as well as a junior development officer at the Canberra Raiders. He said his new challenge would be to lift the team’s competitive spirit. “I’ve been looking at upping the competitiveness in the
team and really taking it to the next level,” he said. “The goal is to really strengthen our side and take on the likes of Kawana, Caloundra and Caboolture. “Last year was a good year making the finals but definitely we want to step it up and really amp up the focus in the club. “I’m not there to play around and play some footy, I’m there to get the girls to win.” Pre season training will resume on January 16, and Ballantyne wants to ensure the team retains as many of last year’s players as he can, to ensure Beerwah continue to have a strong women’s side. “We’ve had a couple clubs going after our girls, and there’s been some uncertainty around some players,” he said. “But I’ve put in a lot of work ringing around to secure the girls and make sure they are comfortable.”
“We’ve definitely lost one player to another club, and a couple of girls who were at the back end of their career wondering if they were going to come back or retire. “But we’ve got a lot of young girls coming through as well through our younger grades, so the future is pretty bright.” The new coach said the women’s team has been building up their skills in the last few years, and would love to welcome new eager women players to come to their preseason training to give it a go. “We aren’t saying there won’t be a team, and we aren’t desperately recruiting, but anyone who has ever considered playing is more than welcome to come to pre season training to give it a go and see if it’ll be right for you,” he said. Ray said there won’t be new recruits from other clubs this season.
Mitch Jennings Jennings, who signed with the Melbourne Storm last year, has re-signed this year and will continue to train with the likes of Cameron Munster and Xavier Coates. There has also been interest in Beerwah Bulldogs A Grade player, Jackson Kite, who debuted for the team last year at 18 years old. Kite is currently is currently playing in the QCup for the Sunshine Coast Falcons and if released, will play for Beerwah this year. The NRLW is also showing keen interest in Beerwah’s female talent. It is believed that one young unnamed dynamo
Jackson Kite is set to sign with an NRLW club. “She’s young but she plays like she’s a veteran, I’ve never seen a young girl with so much skill,” Beerwah Bulldogs president, Stephen Hammill, said. As well as these huge achievements for the Beerwah Bulldogs club, President Hammill said this season is gearing up to be a big one, especially coming off the club’s first Sunshine Coast A Grade Grand Final win. “There’s been a few movements around the place, we are starting to get the young players noticed in the club now, which is really good,” he said. “We have a few new members on our committee, we have a new junior vice president, Dale Richter, and new secretary, Ash Hoskin, but everyone else on the committee has stayed the same. “We’re back on the grind starting as of this Thursday, the fields are looking good, and both scoreboards are finally up, we are just getting everything ready.”

Tall and thin … HAPPY new year to all local gardeners. The last month has been a little trying for us all– with lots of rain, storms, winds, some hail and oppressive humidity. Let’s be honest, in these tropical conditions, gardening isn’t much fun. I’ve just been keeping up with the basics and delaying the heavier work to Autumn. A neighbour recently asked if he could trim back trees and shrubs along the boundary that were growing over into his yard. To be honest, as I hadn’t been into their yard for years, I didn’t realise how much they’d grown. Then a newsletter from a horticultural company about a new lilly pilly release got me thinking about better plants to grow along a boundary fence. With smaller block living becoming the norm, the opportunity to grow larger
plants is becoming less and less – and so what can you plant if you need a screening plant between you and the neighbour. This new lilly pilly release is called Syzygium ‘Up and Away’, and it does what the name says – growing in a column shape 4-5m high but only 1-2m wide. The native is a fast grower and they say it has good disease and pest resilience – so no problems with psyllid pimpling common on the leaves of other varieties. Just like other lilly pillies, their new leaves grow in a flush of pink, and they have the fluffy white flowers that native and honey bees love, so they still make a good habitat choice for the backyard. It responds well to being pruned, but they say that because of the natural column shape, pruning isn’t needed – unless you want

to keep it under a certain height. The range of plants to choose from that grow tallish but narrow is fairly limited – but there are some great ones you can find from good nurseries. One of the best is Cupressus pencil pines, with Cupressus sempervirens ‘glauca’ probably being the most commonly grown. Not only is it very narrow and pointy, but the foliage is also dense and forms a striking architectural garden plant. They can sometimes be a little touchy, and it’s not uncommon to see one dying for no apparent reason in a line of lush and healthy plants. In a similar vein, there are a number of conifers in the Thuja and Juniperus groups that grow in the same column shape and perform just as well. But get some advice for your soil and
