Wow - the long-awaited Christmas holidays are now well and truly over and it is once again business as usual for 2019.

I am a little surprised by this as I know on a practical level that time cannot happen any faster or slower, but why does the three weeks that we are closed at Christmas seem to go so quickly?

It must be a sign that I was fortunate to do lots of things that I enjoyed during the break.

While I didn’t travel to any exotic countries or achieve any of those big goals on my bucket list, I have to say I really did enjoy the time out.

Our holidays were very much about spending time with others, both family and friends, who I don’t always get enough time with during the year. We also did some decluttering and reorganising of our home and the office, which is a great way to start the new year.

Here’s hoping you all had a happy New Year … and that plenty of great things happen in Glasshouse Country and Maleny to share in 2019.

Local News Shining a light for kids’ future Long-time hinterland local and University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) graduate Sam Willcocks, aka Samantha Starshine, has a message to share in her first children’s book – ‘Annie Ant’s Awareness’ - that she hopes will give children a brighter future and a better world.

Sam, who lives in Conondale, has drawn inspiration from a wide range of subjects in her arts/science university degree, including sustainability, sociology and creative writing to create the book, which is the first in an alphabet series, ‘The Awareness Boosting Collection’.

Sam, 29, who received the USC Chancellor’s Medal for her high academic achievement and project work in international community development, said the story was about a little ant with a lot of big feelings, such as anger, worry and sadness.

As a mother of five, Sam said she had the perfect audience to test her books on, with the younger children enjoying the pictures and rhymes while the older ones liked the deeper messages.

“Each book introduces a new concept for the family, including understanding emotions, environmental sustainability and developing growth mindsets,” she said.

The books will have a companion workbook of hands-on activities and questions to get kids thinking about their futures.

“It’s about encouraging families to do the best they can and empowering people to make choices for a better world,” Sam said.

Vale Moya Moffat Moya Rene Moffat, formerly of Glass House Mountains, passed away peacefully at Embracia in Burpengary on December 26 and was farewelled at a private funeral on January 3.

Moya was born on July 6, 1933 to Landsborough dairy farmers Edward and Rene Kowald.

Moya was their second of 15 children and as the eldest daughter helped with the younger children as they came along.

Moya and her siblings rode the family horse to the local school.

When Moya left school she went to work at the Landsborough railway refreshment rooms and was also rostered to work on the rooms at Roma Street and Nambour.

Moya met her future husband Leslie William Moffat at the local dances and they married on July 12, 1952.

They moved into their home on the Moffat family’s pineapple farm on Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains and raised their family there.

Moya enjoyed her time as the local Scout cub leader when her youngest son Craig’s leader left and they needed someone to take over.

She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter, holding many positions including that of matron.

Moya and Les travelled around Australia a few times. They loved travelling in their vans and later

their motorhome.

When Moya lost Les in 2011, she continued to live alone with her dog Honey until she lost her sight.

She moved into a unit at her son Wayne’s home on Johnston Road and in 2017 relocated to Embracia Aged Care at Burpengary She is survived by her three sons, Wayne, Warren and Craig and their spouses, six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Glass House has lost another longtime member of its community and the Moffat family another of their loved ones.

A flower and foodies delight at Yandina One of Queensland’s most iconic events, the Ginger Flower and Food Festival, is returning to the Ginger Factory at Yandina for its 23rd year.

The festival promises to delight the senses with three spectacular days of food, flowers and entertainment celebrating the best of the Sunshine Coast region.

From Friday (January 18) to Sunday (January 20), 9am-5pm each day, the Ginger Factory will burst with colour, showcasing an exquisite range of ornamental gingers and heliconias, which thrive in the Sunshine Coast’s subtropical conditions. A stunning array of more than 3000 plants will be available for sale during the festival.

Lifestyle and foodie presentations, as well as cooking demonstrations from renowned chefs

Free USC course helps build skills and aspirations The University of the Sunshine Coast will offer a free two-day course to give local adults the chance to upgrade their academic skills, explore pathways to higher education and map new career plans.

USC will run the University Skills for Community (US4C) course at USC’s Sippy Downs campus on January 22-23 and at the Caboolture campus on January 30-31, with further rounds to be offered in June and November.

“This is the ideal course for people to sample higher education and discover what career and study options are open to them,” Ms Sanmarco said.

“It will help to demystify university and provide a supportive environment to build their confidence and develop essential academic skills,” she said.

“They will have the opportunity to turn formal and informal learning gained from work and life experience into academic reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills.”

The program also gives guidance on career decision-making. At the end of the course, participants can arrange to have individual sessions with USC career advisors to help develop study and career plans. Stolen solar panels at Bells Creek

Police are seeking witnesses and dash-cam footage from the southbound lanes of the Bruce Highway, Bells Creek, overnight on January 7 and 8.

Detectives are investigating the theft of a large quantity of solar panels, storage batteries and accessories from two fenced billboard sites, about two kilometres north of the Roy’s Road overpass.

They are looking for a four-wheel drive or a truck capable of transporting the items from the scene.

The vehicle was likely to have been parked by the fence line adjoining the Bruce Highway sometime overnight on Monday or Tuesday last week.

Anyone with footage or who passed through that area at that time is urged to contact police.

Living - History War loan honour flag

As part of the recreated Victory Parade held in Maleny on Remembrance Day this year, a replica of Landsborough Shire’s War Loan honour flag was carried by the Maleny Light Horse Troop.

The original flag was presented to the Landsborough Shire for its efforts in raising money in the Seventh War Loan in 1918.

As part of researching the requirements for the day Victory Parade coordinator Chris Brooker initially contacted council’s heritage unit and then the Commonwealth War Memorial for advice on the war loan honour flag, from the Seventh War Loan in 1918.

He was advised that the honour flag was unusual as it incorporated a small Australian flag, all on a large white field, the rest of the flag being three blue vertical bars to indicate 25 per cent above the quota and with a large blue star representing a doubling of the quota. The whole flag was surrounded by a red border.

The flag measured 1.181m height x 2.69m width and was made from wool bunting.

The history behind the flag is that in 1918 the Australian Government established the Seventh War Loan to raise funds for the ongoing war.

Councils and districts throughout Australia participated to raise the funds Treasury required.

An honour flag was given to areas that raised their allocation of the loan.

While Maleny is today known for its generosity, the whole of Landsborough Shire must have dug deep in the war fundraising efforts to double the quota amount.

Wave of history on the coast Caloundra Family History Research will host the ‘Waves in Time’ Family and Local History Conference and Fair on Friday-Sunday, May 24-26, at Venue 114, formerly Lake Kawana Community Centre.

This is the third biennial Queensland state conference to be held. In 2015 it was in Brisbane and in 2017 on the Gold Coast.

The event combines a formal conference with a free public family and local history fair, with the main hall to house more than 30 exhibitors including Ancestry, State Library, National Archives and History Queensland, as well as

other family and local history societies.

Full delegate early bird registration of $135 is open and needs to be paid by March 31, with an additional incentive for those who register early to go into the draw to win a one year world subscription from Ancestry.

On Friday, May 24, there will be free talks on ‘Tips and tricks for beginners’, the Ryerson Index and the websites Trove, FamilySearch and Ancestry.

A special remembrance ceremony For several years in Maleny a remembrance ceremony has been held on January 26, organised

by Dr Ray Barraclough.

With a growing movement across Australia to acknowledge the realities of the frontier conflicts in our history, the ceremony seeks to face some of the human dimensions of those conflicts.

During this year’s ceremony a minute's silence will be observed to remember the Indigenous people of this continent and its islands who lost their lives in the dispossession of their land that began on the 26 January, 1788.

Dr Barraclough said that even early in the white occupation of this land, acknowledgment was made of this process.

“Some 181 years ago, the following statement was issued in 1837 in the British House of Commons’ Report of the Select Committee on Aborigines (British

“Their land has been taken from them without the assertion of any other title than that of superior force ... they have an incontrovertible right to their own soil, a plain and sacred right which seems not to have been understood.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the remembrance ceremony on Saturday, January 26, with a gathering at 9.45am outside on the slope below the RSL Maleny Memorial Hall at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny.

This will be followed by the ceremony inside the hall from 10–11am.

The ceremony gives an opportunity for Australians to remember and honour those who died in seeking to defend and/or retain their homeland.

Obi Independent school planning meetings Plans for the proposed Obi Independent School will start with open community planning meetings at Obi Obi Hall and the organiser wants you and your children to be there.

Cooperation between two local groups significantly benefited community projects late last year when Maleny Singers and Maleny Rotary joined forces to promote the Singers’ production of Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro’.

Maleny Singers director Margaret Taylor said each year the group donated proceeds from its major production to local charities.

“This year I suggested to Rotarian Chris Ross-Smith that Rotary should be the recipient if the funds were given to their nominated charities,” Margaret said.

“They chose Blackall Range Care and LifeFlight. They organised a good raffle, we concentrated on our production and Chris was the liaison between us. It worked well as their raffle was popular and they raised a lot of money from that as well,” she said.

Chris Ross-Smith said Rotary was delighted with the results.

“Between the raffle and the opera we were able to give more than $11,000 to our community projects. The whole club worked hard to sell raffle tickets and we set up a table in the main street of Maleny,” Chris said.

“After a while I noticed people crossing to the other side of the street to avoid me!

“The prizes we gave were imaginative too. First prize was $600 that the winner could divide between tickets to QPAC and accommodation in Brisbane; second $400 and third $200. Or they could choose to take the cash or spend it as vouchers in local shops.

“And, of course, Maleny Singers are always good value, with excellent singers and Margaret Taylor’s professional direction, and this year the 22-piece orchestra gave their services free.

“Rotary also made the occasion one for club fellowship. We held a gala for the first night on The Deck of the Community Centre, including their bar and food from Maple 3,” Chris said.

He said Margaret Taylor, the singers, the backstage and front of house crew and the Maleny Rotary Club, combined well to make it such a success. As an added bonus, it was an occasion with a “good feel”.

Contributed by Helen Weil The Mooloolah Mob Heart Foundation Walking Group is still going strong and was pictured recently on the steps at Mooloolah between Brandenburg Road and Fern Gully Place.

The group is very appreciative of the newly installed handrail on the steps and would like to thank Cr Jenny McKay for her efforts to get this improvement. We are now able to walk up or down the steps with a feeling of safety and stability and will again include this in our regular walking routes. We are sure that others in the community will also appreciate this handrail.

The Mooloolah walking group meets at Martin Rungert Park in the centre of town on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6.30am.

There are many different routes taken and walking takes about an hour and is usually about 4-5km.

It is a very social walk and new members are always welcome. You don’t have to walk for the full hour, or the full distance – just what you think you can do. Some walkers are quite fast while others in the group take it at an easier pace.

Regardless, there is lots of good walking exercise and lots of chatter and gossip.

A parasite affecting macadamia trees is the focus of a new research initiative in Queensland.

But the parasite is not a nasty introduced insect pest or disease. This time it’s a native plant.

Mistletoe, the ‘Christmas kissing plant’, attacks a host tree and lives off its water and nutrients by tapping into the tree’s vascular system.

A new research initiative, led by mistletoe expert Professor Dave Watson from Charles Sturt University, is investigating the significant effect that native mistletoes have on the production of macadamia nuts in Queensland.

Funded by Hort Innovation through the macadamia research and development levy and government contributions, the project aims to understand more about how the mistletoe attacks macadamia trees and identify what management options are the most effective.

Professor Watson said mistletoe used the host tree as a root system to support its growth.

“Mistletoe rely on birds to spread their seeds, in particular the Australian mistletoe bird from the flowerpecker family, which eats little else,” he said.

“The birds feed off the fruit but cannot digest the seed, and as such deposit them onto the branch of another tree, usually within minutes, causing rapid germination and sending a root into the host.”

Professor Watson said he had already identified three individual species of mistletoe affecting macadamia tree crops.

“However, we actually have more than 90 different native species of mistletoe,” he said.

“Mistletoe grows quite freely and unproblematically in the bush. The issue it raises with tree crops is that it diverts nutrients away from the host plant and macadamia trees in particular lose their ability to produce a crop.

Local consultant Chris Fuller, Hort Innovation relationship manager Dumisani Mhlanga, research leader Professor Dave Watson and research assistant Melinda Cook “A severe mistletoe infection can deplete a mature macadamia tree of all its nutrients within just three years, which, if left unchecked, can cause the premature death of the tree.”

Professor Watson said the research would help develop options to mitigate the deleterious effect of mistletoe on macadamia tree crops.

“Macadamias are the only horticultural crop in Australia to experience issues with mistletoe and initial grower consultations have revealed that some of the newer varieties may be more susceptible to being affected,” he said.

“This research will help to identify the underlying causes of increased mistletoe numbers in macadamia trees and evaluate potential management options.

“Providing habitat for a native mistletoe feeding caterpillar and for wildlife that are partial to the taste of mistletoe could provide a low cost and natural solution.”

Support for swim club

Maleny Swimming Club would once again like to thank the Maleny Trail Riders Club for its continuing support in keeping the pool open to the public.

The trail riders recently donated $1800 to the swim club to pay for the new heat blanket and roller on the above-ground learn-to-swim pool.

Russell Eggins, the trail riders’ president, handed over the donation to swim club president Gail Ring on their final night last year.

Gail said the learn-to-swim pool is an integral part of the education of toddlers in the community in learning about water safety and swimming.

“The complex is getting on in years now and it is a continuing battle to keep it open, so the support from other clubs, organisations and individuals is greatly appreciated,” she said.

Puppy carers urgently needed There is a puppy boom at Seeing Eye Dogs Vision Australia and puppy carers are urgently needed across the Sunshine Coast.

With three large litters born in the past month, there has never been a better time to welcome a puppy into your home while also giving back to the community.

“Through the Seeing Eye Dogs’ puppy caring program, you can give the gift of confidence and independence to someone who is blind or has low vision by contributing to the development of a seeing eye dog,” Tracey Bashford, Seeing Eye Dogs puppy development and dog trainer for the Sunshine Coast, said.

The journey from playful puppy to working seeing eye dog takes about two years, and the first step in this journey is being placed with a volunteer puppy carer.

“Puppies need carers from eight weeks of age until they are about 12-15 months old, and we currently have pups that are ready to go to homes straight away, with other litters ready to go to homes throughout the year,” Tracey said.

“We have a variety of different caring options available, including full-time carers to have the pup from eight weeks to 12-15 months until they enter their formal training.

“There is also a six-month caring option and we are always on the lookout for temporary foster

homes for when the regular carers go away for a short period.”

Tracey said there were a number of things to consider about becoming a puppy carer, with the most important attribute being an understanding that the program was about the greater good – and of course having a love for dogs.

Other factors to consider include: • Puppies can't be left alone for more than three hours at a time. Talk to your employer about the puppy coming to work with you.

• If you have children and you walk them to school, take the pup with you. If you're going out for coffee, take the pup with you. It's about socialising the puppy so they get used to family life and being in a home.

• All costs incurred throughout the puppy caring program are covered by Vision Australia, including food and vet bills.

• A fully fenced, secure yard is essential and carers must be happy for the dog to live and sleep inside.

• Transport is necessary to get the pup socialised out and about and to meet the puppy development trainer regularly in various locations.

Generosity from the Glass House Mountains community was shared between 17 families in need at Christmas time.

2018 was the first year for the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre to initiate bringing the locals together to give Christmas hampers to those less fortunate.

In the past, the neighbourhood centre Julie Evans and Chappy Tania Bye rs from the distributed hampers Glass House State School sharing donated from donations Christmas gifts arranged through organisations outside Glass House. Thanks to local efforts, several families were helped last year, increasing from six to 17.

Donations of food and children’s gifts were collected at the Glass House Mountains IGA, Glass House Mountains State School, the neighbourhood centre and GoodStart Early Learning Centre. Volunteers from the neighbourhood centre packaged and distributed the hampers to local families.

Coordinator of the local Christmas hamper appeal, Julie Evans, said it was a pleasure to see the smiles on people’s faces when they received their hampers.

“It was the gift of giving that made doing this so special. Thanks to our community we could reach our goal of helping many families,” Julie said.

The neighbourhood centre wishes to thank everyone who gave donations, especially the school, IGA and GoodStart, and all the volunteers.

If people are in need, emergency relief is available at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, Ryan St, on weekday mornings.

Women of the Sun relaunches

The chamber choir Women of the Sun is relaunching in 2019. The choir already has a solid core of dedicated women who travel from as far as Brisbane, Woodford, Witta, Cooroy and Noosa, and hopes to increase its numbers.

The choir is seeking new singers aged 17 years and over who want to be part of a supportive, virtuosic women's ensemble of 24-32 singers based on the Sunshine Coast. The choir is working towards presenting its repertoire outside our region to Brisbane and beyond.

The choir is looking for choral singers dedicated to performing brilliant music and committed to attaining the highest possible rehearsal and performance standards, who are at least a fair sight-reader or are capable of learning music rapidly and are self-motivated.

Singers should be prepared to devote not only rehearsal time to the creation of music but also to work diligently on their own or in small ad hoc ensembles and sections, if necessary, to make the music as beautiful as it can be.

In 2019 the choir will be presenting two programs, including a general program covering a wide range of musical periods and styles such as the works of Hassler, Schubert, Brahms, Casals and others including Gyorgy Orban's Mass Number 6, as well as a presentation of English choral music featuring Britten's popular 'Ceremony of Carols' and Holst's ethereal 'Hymns of the Rig Veda'.

Rehearsals are held on Friday evenings from 6.45-9.15pm at Siena College in Sippy Downs.

From the churches Can you imagine Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends saying to the fat controller, “Fat controller you don’t know what you are talking about - we want to be free from your oppression! We want to be free to be ourselves!”

James says to the fat controller, “I am sick of eating coal I want to change my diet and eat what I want” and so he decides to drink cola. Or Emily saying, “I am sick of staying on the railway tracks - they fence me and stop me from seeing the countryside”. So off the tracks she steps. Or Gordon saying to the controller, “I know I am run by coal but I need to add more. I need to soak my coal in petrol, so I can add my bit to it”.

Doing what the train engines want to do won’t work. All that will happen is nothing or else some of the engines are going to be very sick or worse.

For Thomas and his friends true freedom is to be found when they listen to the controller and be who they were created to be.

We can be like Thomas and his friends.

God has told us the true path to freedom.

Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre

Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre volunteers celebrated their achievements and friendships at their annual Christmas lunch in December. In recognition of their dedication to the centre and local community, they were celebrate a treated to a meal at Secrets Neighbourhood centre volunteers on the Lake. Without the great 2018 volunteers, this and many other community services would not exist.

Some of the highlights from 2018 included holding two sports expos in conjunction with Community Barbeques, the launch of the community hub space and regular group, clothes and produce swap, house concert with Canadian Jon Brooks, launch of the computer mentoring program, face painting at the dogs on patrol day, Tibetan cooking class, supporting the inaugural Health & Wellbeing Expo, hosting the Glass House Mountains community Christmas party and establishing the community-driven Christmas appeal.

A big thank you goes to all the wonderful volunteers at the centre and all those who supported the centre during the year.

There are plenty of opportunities to join in the fun this year by volunteering.

People can be part of community events, projects, office roles and coordinating groups.

There are other people who think they know more than God and so they add things onto what God has said, a bit like Gordon adding petrol to his coal - it would burn too hot and quickly destroy Gordon’s engine.

We tend to think we know better than God, only to discover it doesn’t work.

That’s why we should listen carefully to the words of the Lord Jesus.

Jesus answered them: “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. But if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

Jesus claims that he is the one who makes us truly free. That’s why we should listen to him.

Community Groups The marvellous Caboolture air museum

Contributed by Norma McCormack Glasshouse Probus had an informative day at Caboolture Warplane and Flight Heritage Museum with the very instructive minders of the World War I and earlier aircraft.

These folk, all volunteers, seek to bring alive the aircraft from the first 30 years of aviation in Australia. They are very passionate about their planes and keep them in working order and, most importantly, fly them.

It is a unique presentation at Caboolture, in the form of an interactive, flying museum led by an actual commercial pilot.

He was able to give us the history of each aircraft, how they were built and fuelled, and the men who flew them.

There are well documented history boards covering the walls of the museum to inform you while you wander around among real planes – a marvellous experience and here on our doorstep. Thanks to the Australian Vintage Aviation Society we really enjoyed the visit.

The Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains has great outings and great speakers at our general meetings. Our general meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 10am at the Beerwah Hall.

Maleny Little Athletics receives grant Maleny Little Athletics is one of about 100 centres across Australia to receive a sports grant from a fund of $360,000 to replace or expand sports equipment.

The funds were raised through the sale of specially marked chiller bags designed by Aussie kids. Maleny Little As will receive a grant for $4,600.

For every chiller bag sold, 25 cents is directed to the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to provide sport equipment grants.

Coles state general manager Jerry Farrell said that customers who had bought the range of chiller bags at Coles stores had helped fund the purchase of equipment to support activities such as high jump, discus, hurdles and the various running events.

“Maleny Little Athletics told us they would like to receive a grant to buy hurdles, a multi-lane timer and first aid supplies and we were delighted to help because we know these are an essential part of Little As to support volunteers and young budding athletes,” Mr Farrell said.

Health &Beauty New Year's resolution

With Andrew Hoge from Audious Health As the dust settles on New Year's celebrations we sometimes turn our minds to our New Year resolutions. Will they work (when they might not have in the past)?

What would it look like if they did? I'm no expert on resolutions and their likelihood of success. I have, however, observed a lot of people make life changes.

Quitting smoking, losing weight, eating more healthily, drinking less alcohol, quitting sugar are just some of the common intentions I've witnessed clients set.

Lately I've been reflecting on why one person achieves their resolution and another doesn't.

Is it ‘will’ power? I think it is in part. Is it desire? Yes, in part. Is it having a stubborn personality? Perhaps.

There is actually plenty of interesting literature on why people are successful or not in setting and achieving resolutions if you care to search the internet.

My conclusion is that the most important factor that distinguishes those likely to be successful, is a compelling personal reason to achieve the resolution (goal).

Let's break that down. Compelling - something that really will make a significant difference for you in your life. It may be small to others but to you it is important.

Personally I've seldom seen someone achieve a goal for someone else.

So an option in setting up a goal for 2019 could be to reflect on what is the most compelling thing you would like to achieve for yourself in 2019 and enjoy the journey!

You Said It Beerwah Bakery closes

It is with a heavy heart that I have had to write this rather than speak to the customers of Beerwah Bakery in person and say my goodbyes.

Sadly I was informed on Sunday, January 13 that our beloved bakery has closed for good, so, just like all of you I am in shock.

However, the owners have made their mind up and I am out of a job and you lovely people have lost a Beerwah icon!

It has been a joy and pleasure to have been given the opportunity to have served you over the past 16 years and I want to say from the bottom of my heart that you helped make each day rewarding and enjoyable.

Locals and tourists alike have loved our pies and hopefully meeting me. I have loved meeting you, old and new, laughing with you all and listening to your stories, sharing news and talking about our lovely town to strangers.

Again thank you for your support and loyalty and I hope I 'bump' into many of you around town so I can personally thank you.

Times are tough, I know, but this community is strong and I hope I get another job soon so I can continue to serve the beautiful people of Beerwah who have become more than customers but friends.

The Queensland TAB is no longer UniTAB. It is now NSW Tabcorp.

What’s more, they tell you - the account holder - how much you can bet on a single race by telephone.

It’s true - you have to bet with the amount of $10 for each bet if you speak to an operator. No more $1 each way or varied bets such as $3 a win and $4 a place all up, etc. You now bet how they tell you.

Next year it will be $20 a minimum bet. The Queensland clubs and pubs will be telling us how much to put into poker machines next.

Maybe our local parliamentary members can get on board and explain why this has occurred and why it was allowed to happen.

Community spirit alive in Beerwah

Just before Christmas, my husband filled up his van and bought a bag of ice from Coochin Creek Co-Op Shell and inadvertently left his wallet behind.

It was found by a female customer and handed into staff who then went to a lot of trouble to contact us to let us know it was there.

I hope the lady who handed in the wallet reads this and knows how very grateful we are for her honesty. Also the female staff member who contacted us.

Crime ‘Fact Check’

I received a newsletter from Andrew Powell in December with some very alarming local crime statistics. It started with this statement: “Earlier this week, I was joined by the Shadow Minister for Police, Trevor Watts MP, to talk about what is arguably the biggest issue in Glass House at the moment.”

Really is this the biggest issue? No one I know is talking about crime in the hinterland!

I could not believe our lovely hinterland crime rates could have increased as much he stated in his letter. He claimed in Mooloolah Valley robberies were up by 53%, offences against the person were up by 41% and unlawful use of a motor vehicle was up by 68%.

He did not give a base line as to how long this was over, it could be five or ten years for all I know. When I went looking for proof of these statistics I got very different numbers direct from the Queensland Police website/online crime map.

I would hope we can trust the police to have correct numbers.

This provides up to date crime numbers and it told me there were zero robberies, three offences against the person and nine unlawful use of a motor vehicle over a two-year period in Mooloolah Valley (2017/2018). I would not call these alarming crime statistics at all.

Insects, birds and animals on the decline

I hope in the new year we can assist all the bees, birds, insects that share the planet with us. Why? We are verging on an ecological apocalypse.

Distinguished Harvard biologist Edward O Wilson observed: “If all humankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed 10,000 years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos.”

An insect Armageddon is under way, as many entomologists state, the result of our environmental impacts - pollution, habitat changes, overuse of pesticides and chemicals, plus changing climate. This decline has crucial consequences. Without insects, hundreds of bird species face starvation and some ornithologists believe this lack of food is already causing serious declines in bird numbers. In a column on page 40 of the GC&M News (December 5) the writer says under the heading 'Keeping our wildlife safe' that poison baits for rodents is killing owls, raptors and frogmouths.

Magnify this problem 10,000 times and apply it to our planet with agri-chemicals and habitat clearing and you have a growing crisis.

Of the two million known species on this planet about 70% are insects. And many of them are as foundational to the food chain for land animals as plankton are for marine life.

About a year and half ago, the first long-term study of the decline of insect populations was reported, sparking scientific concern about a possible ecological disaster. It was based on data collected by dozens of amateur entomologists in nature reserves across Germany.

The team of scientists concluded that the flying insect population had dropped by a staggering 76% over a 27-year period. That is confirmed across the world now.

What do we do? Insects that cause us a nuisance, we regularly swat, squash, crush, or take out en masse with pesticides. We must do better.

4 ways to freshen up your finances this new year Don’t you love a new year? A page turns, and we have a blank chapter in front of us. It’s time to start setting some goals, and getting things organised, so we kick some serious goals in 2019.

Make financial resolutions: Nothing like a new year to set new financial goals, or maybe rework your old goals.

Whatever you hope for, speak it aloud, talk to your loved ones, write it down and make it real. The more you share your goals with others, the more accountable you are.

If the goal feels enormous, break your goal into achievable steps, and focus on achieving the first step. For 22

Good to see

It was good to see that the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club has distanced itself from the "category killer" puppy farm and boarding kennel proposed for Landsborough. Perhaps we can also hear from the RSPCA for their view on this

type of facility. If this gets up, one wonders what proportion of the output from this business will end up at Sippy Creek Animal Refuge for rehousing.

Refund on bottles

I would like someone to explain why we are paying more for bottled water, soda water and spring water and obviously other products.

Before the container return scheme was introduced, we were paying less and now we are paying more and if we want to try to recoup part of the increase (10 cents) we have the great hassle of having to return the bottles and in some cases wait for the so-called refund.

This is after we have had to waste time and petrol to return them for a refund.

Coles, Woolworths and IGA have increased their price from 75 cents to 90 cents - please explain why this has happened as it’s more than the 10 cents supposed refund.

Bring back the old system - cheaper prices and let whoever was getting the 10 cents before get it. It’s just

unfair and a nightmare to get the refund.

I for the life of me can’t understand what happened to change whoever was paying the 10 cents before to justify supermarkets ripping off the public to double dip it would seem. If someone has a logical answer please enlighten me and others I have spoken to.

Hinterland Kids Colour explosion fun

Contributed by Debbie Roberts Beerburrum State School has hosted its first Colour Explosion Fun Run and raised $1,500. Students had to navigate their way through a number of obstacles while being doused with colour and water by the staff and parents.

Needless to say the staff and parents ended up just as colourful as the students.

It was a very enjoyable morning and a big thanks must go to the P&C and to all our parent volunteers who helped with setting up and running the event.

The Beerwah State School community collected items for Christmas hampers and proudly donated nine baskets to St Vincent de Paul Society Landsborough at the school’s final parade in 2018.

The baskets assisted families in the local area to spread the Christmas cheer.

Playgroup enjoys a great year Contributed by Natasha Odgers Mooloolah Valley Playgroup had a wonderful year in 2018 with creative hearts exploring, active bodies playing with balls and tactile learning, and intrigued minds enjoying books, songs and dance. Parents have also enjoyed socialising at playgroup and at dinners at local restaurants.

The highlight of the last meeting of 2018 was a visit from Santa at the Christmas party at Martin Rungert Park.

The children were treated to gifts from Santa plus some lucky dips. They also had some fun pretending to put out fires with the Mooloolah Fire Brigade from the flashing fire truck.

The playgroup is blessed to have community grandparents, Chris and Carol,

helping out and forming lovely bonds with the children.

Mooloolah Valley Playgroup is back on Wednesday, January 30, 9.30-11am, at the after school care building, 48 King Road, next to the Mooloolah Pool.

As is sometimes expected in our region’s summer months, rain and stormy weather regrettably saw the Glasshouse Country Community Carols cancelled at the end of last year. I have spoken to the event’s organiser who is in negotiations to reschedule the event. We will let you all know when we have the new time and date for what promises to be an event with an expanded scope of entertainment.

By now you may have noticed the excellent improvement work by Sunshine Coast Council on the recently completed road reseal project on Old Landsborough Road. Cyclists and pedestrians also benefit with a safer, more formalised off-road, two-way shared path, which is separated from the road by the line of guideposts, between Newells Road and 450m north of Clarkes Road. The much improved shared pathway connects into the existing pathways and adds to the steady progress on expanding our active transport network and the opportunities for intra-township bike riding. There is still a long way to go to have a complete active transport network but in a region as large as ours, it’s important to make the most of every sensible opportunity such as this road reseal project.

Critical integrated transport strategy (ITS) gets the green light

As portfolio councillor for transport I was more than pleased that our ITS strategy was endorsed by council on December 6, 2018. The strategy sets our region a number of confronting and challenging travel change targets. For example, before 2041 we need a dramatically improved public transport (PT) system (a state government responsibility) to attract at least 10% of the projected 2.3 million trips generated by the state government stipulated population of 500,000. Without a significant shift to PT, our roads could carry a choking 1.63 million private car trips per day. The ITS is our region showing leadership with the first comprehensive strategy and is our blueprint for an integrated, safe and efficient transport system that, through the collaboration of all three levels of government and the private sector, will service and support a rapidly growing Sunshine Coast. The strategy was developed with input from the community, key stakeholder feedback and expert analysis, as well as a review of trends and technology changes occurring across the transport sector.

State Member for Caloundra 2019 to bring more community discussion for Landsborough overpass We have begun another year and while we have made progress in clarifying the future of the Landsborough rail overpass project, we are still a long way from breaking ground or even seeing what the project will be at its final point.

It was 2016 when the Landsborough community was first made aware of the state government’s proposal to replace the Caloundra Street level crossing as part of the North Coast rail line duplication. After two years of meetings and discussions it is now certain that the overpass at Landsborough will go ahead and the state government will be closing the level crossing at the rail line.

It has been a long two years of uncertainty and of the community being left in the dark. In those two years the biggest and most important thing Landsborough has fought for is to be heard and to be communicated with about a proposal that impacts the future of their town.

In October 2016 the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) released a short publication regarding the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade project. This publication stated that TMR “is committed to engaging with the community” on this matter.

In response to that announcement I held a community forum, together with the Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, which was attended by nearly 300 local residents and business owners. Feedback collected demonstrated how many people felt that adequate measures were not taken by TMR to keep them informed.

In August 2018 members of the Landsborough Sub-Committee made an important trip with me to State Parliament to discuss this contentious project in Landsborough with Mark Bailey, the Minister for Transport and Main Roads. While this meeting with the minister was preliminary only with more expected in the future – the discussion finally gave the community a bit more clarity surrounding the project. Members who attended the meeting questioned the minister about community input and Mr Bailey made it clear that nothing would be finalised without community consultation taking place. It is also important to note the current proposal is only a “reference plan” with costings and a specific timeline not yet complete.

As it’s still unclear when this community consolation will take place, I plan to hold another community forum in the first half of 2019 to revisit your views on the proposal with the goal of having representatives of TMR attending.

Now that we know the overpass is going ahead, how best can we achieve a win-win solution for everyone?

Summer is the perfect time to head outdoors, but with more days of extreme heat still to come, it's important to take precautions to stay healthy when getting active.

Exercising in Queensland's hot and humid conditions can not only be uncomfortable, it can rapidly raise your body’s core temperature, increasing your risk of heat-related illnesses.

Queenslanders need to exercise regularly to stay healthy – 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity or 60 minutes of moderate activity every day is the recommendation. Here are six tips from Cancer Council Queensland to help you keep your cool while you get active this summer.

1. Hydrate. Water is one of the most important components of our bodies, aiding our digestion, circulation, brain function and temperature control.

Staying well hydrated is a must all year round, but particularly in summer as we sweat and lose water at a faster rate. The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating recommends an average person should drink at least two litres of water daily. Ensure you keep up your water intake throughout the day, particularly after exercising and/or excessive sweating.

2. Plan your exercise times. Avoid exercising in the hottest part of the day, usually between 10am and 3pm. You will stay much cooler if you set your alarm for an early morning workout or wait until the late afternoon or early evening to exercise.

3. Dress accordingly. Keep your workout gear loose and light. Tight clothing and thicker materials can amp up the sweat factor, potentially leading to dehydration.

4. Stay SunSmart. Not only does sunburn and UV damage increase the risk of skin cancer, it also prevents the body from cooling properly. Be sure to apply SPF30 or higher broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outdoors. A broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses are a must when it comes to sun protection as well. Where possible, try to exercise in a shaded area.

5. Alter your workouts. If the weather is too extreme to go for a run, seek out alternative workouts. Swimming is an excellent summer exercise, or you can try exercising indoors where there’s air-conditioning, such as a gym or studio. If you do really love running, you can trade the hot roads for shaded park runs instead.

This year I have decided to do things a little differently. Instead of me prattling on about the aerobics class, I want to let my girls – and one wonderful guy - have their say.

Before that though, a huge thankyou to Megs (one of my valuable regulars) for coming up with the amazing wording for my heading. Thanks Megs, and so … love your work.

Now a word from my wonderful group.

Marianne says: “I have been with Julie for three years and still love it.

Laugh, have fun, dance, made great friends and we all enjoy a coffee and chat after class.”

(Julie here again … by the way, whenever Marianne and hubby Peter go away – which isn't often – everyone in the room misses her energy and laugh!)

Sue commented that the camaraderie is very evident and always present, and loves that we all look out for each other.

Jen says: “I started my first Maleny class with Julie four years ago now, and I love the fact that we are still going strong.”

Bev also made comment: "You feel very welcome from the minute you step inside the door. To combine fabulous music with a great aerobic workout keeps me coming back each week.”

I really thank all my group for that input, and take this opportunity, from the bottom of my heart, to say thank you for your ongoing commitment and support each week.

The addition of weighted hoops and drumming routines has definitely added variety to this class. As someone who has osteoporosis, I cannot believe just how much dance has alleviated a lot of this disease for me.

Last week I was able to have a quick catch up with some of my family at Fresca Market and Café on Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains.

My young nephew will be starting school this year, so as a nearly five-year-old he has plenty of energy and he happily gave their new playground a big thumbs up.

Business owners Kristina and her husband Tony have done an amazing job in creating a really inviting environment for the whole family to enjoy.

No doubt plenty of locals will be pleased to see that the playground, which is suitable for children aged between four and 12 years, is now operational.

Things2Do Jazz club brings Galapagos Duck

The renowned Galapagos Duck will be playing at the Caloundra Power Boat Club on Sunday, January 20 from 2pm.

Galapagos Duck began in the late 1960s at the NSW ski resort Kosciuszko Chalet at Charlottes Pass.

After returning to Sydney the band continued to work and became well known in the Australian jazz and music scene during the 1970s when it was the house band at the emerging jazz night club The Basement near Circular Quay.

The band has worked and continues to work in concert halls, night clubs, at jazz festivals, in the recording studio, and on radio and television.

Although the membership has changed, the direction of the band has always remained the same - to create a performance experience that, while jazz oriented, is able to be appreciated and enjoyed by everybody.

The Tamarind Cooking School at Maleny may just be the answer. The school offers the opportunity to learn the intricacies of a range of cuisines from expert chefs in a state of the art cooking school that overlooks beautiful gardens in the heart of a tranquil rainforest.

The school has long course cooking classes that run for four hours from 11am–3pm every Saturday at $165 per person, and includes an apron, lunch and wine. Upcoming themes include Thai, South East Asian, Italian and French.

Once a month on a Sunday, between 11am–1pm, the school also offers short course demonstrations at $45 per person, which includes tastings.

In the next few months they have breads, dessert and dumpling cooking demonstrations on offer.

David Dufourq Photography exhibition

Maleny Library will host a photographic exhibition of work by David Dufourq from January 21 to February 28. David is a landscape and nature photographer who creates panorama images with characteristically ethereal quality and ephemeral feel.

This exhibition contains a collection of photographs that depict the ephemeral beauty of the region.

Each image contains a hidden depth.

Subtle changes of light, a delicate breeze and shifting colours are all used as elements within the images to articulate the gift of the landscape and nature.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) will hold its first plant sale for 2019 on Saturday, February 2, starting at 8.30am.

The venue will be Glasshouse Plantation farm shop on the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout Road.

A good range of local native plants will be available at $1 a tube along with a limited quantity of the endangered Richmond birdwing butterfly vines.

Cowboys v Titans at Sunshine Coast Stadium

Tickets for the NRL pre-season trial between the North Queensland Cowboys and Gold Coast Titans to be played on Saturday, February 23 at Sunshine Coast Stadium went on sale on Monday, January 14.

Both teams will hold open training sessions at the stadium on Friday, February 22 and they also plan on visiting local schools and hospitals.

Summer means school holidays, visiting friends and relatives, and having fun in the sun and the pool – yours, or better still, someone else’s.

Sunshine Coast Council is keen to remind swimming pool owners that it’s better to be safe than sorry around pools, meaning that all pools - including spas and some portable pools - need to comply with the pool safety standards.

On average, 15 drowning deaths of children under the age of 17 years occur in Queensland each year. Half of these tragic events happen in backyard pools.

Statistics show that most backyard drownings are due to children gaining access to the pool because it was unfenced or the pool gate was either faulty or propped open.

Council regularly undertakes compliance action in response to complaints about pool safety breaches and in 2018 council officers issued notices for 213 breaches.

Pool safety is a joint responsibility, with council’s role being to regulate and educate. However, it is up to pool owners to undertake regular checks to ensure their pool barriers are compliant.

The Queensland pool safety standard regulates the height and strength of barriers, non-climbable zones, gates, latching requirements and the prevention of direct access from a building into a pool area.

In general, we are not experts in what is or isn’t adequate when dealing with the complex rules and regulations around pool safety, but there are qualified and competent private pool safety inspectors who are.

Private pool safety inspectors can provide advice about pool safety, how to meet Queensland Government requirements, inspect pools and provide pool safety certificates.

To find a local pool safety inspection expert, head to the ‘Trades and services’ section of GC&M News and you’ll find them listed under ‘Pool services’. Don’t forget to tell them you got their details from the GC&M News.

Fast facts: Pools capable of holding a water depth of more than 300mm must comply with the Queensland pool safety standard. This includes swimming pools, spas, portable and inflatable swimming pools.

To ensure your pool is compliant: • check you have a building approval • get advice from a pool safety inspector about how to make your pool comply • contract a pool safety inspector to do a formal inspection with a view to getting a pool safety certificate.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Welcome back to all our bowls friends as we look forward to a great 2019. It was a busy week at the club with roundup games starting on Wednesday. It was a good first up night with some new faces coming along to try their hand.

To all those slower starters, we are back in business so get your teams in and come along.

All newcomers welcome and everyone will get a game.

Despite some light showers some good bowls were played on the night revealing some good early form. Paul Kemp returned with his regular toucher form. Ray Ellemor showed some good form realising the benefits of the bowlers arm for us aged players.

Members have not yet returned in numbers from the holiday break, but Sunday, January 6, saw Nick Cram take on Donna Manning and Helen Andrews in a close match of association croquet.

After a few false starts, Nick got around to the tenth hoop, and Donna made a break to get to hoop nine. Helen got around to hoop five, with a couple of good roll shots.

Glasshouse District Cricket Club Contributed by Leanne McAllister Sunshine Coast were undefeated winners at the 2018 Queensland Cricket U13 male state championship played over 10 matches in November-December at Maryborough, Caloundra and the Gold Coast.

The boys from Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club had outstanding performances with Kyle Young's bowling claiming 16 wickets, vice-captain Alexander Procopis scoring the second highest number of runs of the tournament (351) and also taking eight wickets bowling, and wicket keeper Curtis McAllister named champion player with 393 runs, ten stumpings and four catches.
