Hi Everyone...

on the Cover

Normally my first column for the year is one of positivity, with me looking forward to another great year in the local community. However, like many others I am feeling emotionally worn down from all the horrifying images/stories about the bush fires that have been affecting the whole country. Most of us have experienced the feeling of helplessness, as there is so little we can directly do for the individuals who have lost loved ones, their homes, their livelihoods, their local environments including wildlife as well as buildings and infrastructure in their communities. However, as is our nature in a natural disaster, plenty of locals have been finding ways to help through a range of fundraising projects and donation initiatives aimed at easing the crisis and supporting action from afar. In this week’s edition we have included some of what is already happening locally and in the coming weeks we will continue to keep you updated on ways within our community that you can contribute. If you would like to share projects and activities you are involved in with GC&M News readers, just send us an email at editorial@gcnews.com.au so we can help get the message out. Regards,

Local News Positive impact of plantation closures during fire season HQPlantations Beerburrum plantation, popular with local and visiting recreation communities, was reopened to the public this week following an unprecedented two month closure for public safety in what has been the country’s worst fire season. Community support for the temporary closure may have saved our local forests from similar devastation. HQPlantations reports that over the last decade there has been an average of six wildfires each December averaging 30 hectares burned. However, during the closure period for December 2019, which was unseasonably drier and less humid than usual, there were only two fires and these were swiftly put out by the company’s fully equipped fire-fighting crews resulting in only 1.5 hectares burned. One of those fires was started by illegal fireworks. The number of November fires in 2019, when the plantations were closed for two weeks, were also significantly lower with only five fires instead of the 10 fires in an average November. Some staff say it’s the first Christmas they can remember with no fires between Christmas and New Year. Since New Year’s Day, there have only been two fires, one that was a result of arson. The Beerburrum plantation extends from Bribie Island to Woodford in the west and Landsborough in the north, and includes popular areas around the Glass House Mountains. Based on records maintained for the past 25 years, there are on average 67 fires a year in this plantation.

To combat this risk, HQPlantations operates a permanent fire room at Beerburrum which oversees one staffed fire tower and four fire cameras monitored during daylight hours for the fire season. At the Beerburrum depot there are 24 employees and contractors trained as forest fire-fighters and a fleet of first attack vehicles with 500 litre tanks, fire tankers with 4,000 litres and contracted water resupply vehicles. There is also heavy machinery to construct and maintain fire breaks and helicopters with aerial fire-fighting capability on standby during very high fire danger periods. HQPlantations closed all plantations south of Mackay for two weeks in early November. They were briefly reopened at the end of the month before being closed again on December 3 following several larges blazes across a range of tenures including state forest, some which took more than a week to contain. While conditions have been stable locally, HQPlantations fire fighters have been deployed to NSW and Victoria to assist with fire suppression efforts there. The closure has been lifted for all plantation forests except those that have been extensively fire damaged. HQPlantations reminds visitors fire bans are still in place and conditions are still dry. People should always check plantations are open before they visit by going to www.hqplantations.com.au/ closures.

firefighters and SES

The Queensland Government has confirmed that Queensland SES volunteers will be eligible for compensation along with volunteer firefighters battling this extraordinary fire season under the federal government’s volunteer firefighters compensation package, which will be administered by state governments. “We’re going to make sure this funding gets out the door as soon as possible,” the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said. “This year’s bushfire season has been long and hard both in Queensland and interstate and many of our hardworking QFES volunteers have given up a considerable amount of personal time in battling these blazes,” the Premier said. “It’s only fair those that have suffered a loss of income as a result are fairly and quickly compensated.” Ms Palaszczuk said eligible volunteers who had lost income after working more than ten calendar days of service from the 1 July 2019 to the 30 June 2020 would be able to apply for compensation. “Volunteers step out on to the frontline without asking for or expecting compensation,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “There are times when they miss out on income as a result of giving to others and this payment goes some way to recognising this.

“This is an acknowledgement of the prolonged bushfire season our emergency services have battled, and the trying conditions they have faced." Acting Fire and Emergency Services Minister Leeanne Enoch said Queenslanders relied on volunteers to protect communities and this fire season these people have gone over and above what they normally would in their roles. “Volunteers sign up with the expectation of dedicating some of their time to protect the community but the length and severity of this fire season is beyond that expectation and now could be at significant personal expense,” Ms Enoch said. The Volunteer Compensation Package 2019-20 will be available to volunteers who are selfemployed or work for a business with an annual turnover of less than $50 million. The payments of up to $300 per person per day (up to $6,000) will be tax-free and not means-tested, under criteria established by the Australian Government. Registrations of interest are open now, with payments expected from Monday, January 13. Volunteers will receive more information on how to access the payments directly from QFES, or they can visit www.qld.gov.au/VolunteerCompensation.

Local communities supporting those impacted by bush fires By Lea Parkes

During the first week of the year Fitness Plus at Beerwah had already put the call out to members and friends to let them know they were a drop-off point for a truck leaving the coast and heading south with supplies for our fellow Aussies affected by the fires. This included items such as blankets, non-perishable food, water, medical supplies and tents. The team at Feed and Fodder Beerwah are acting as a collection hub for the Animal Rescue Collective, which is supporting our animals and feathered friend in need. They are seeking donations to purchase food and supplies or donated items from their wish list. Donations will be sent to Sydney and Gippsland in Victoria and will be dispersed among carers, volunteers and people in need. Feed and Fodder is located at 18 Biondi Cresent, Beerwah. F: Animal Rescue Collective Krystle Kirk of Landsborough has set up her own project called Smile Bags, aimed at putting smiles back on the faces of children affected by bushfires. Krystle is putting the word out for people to donate new, small, non-perishable items suitable for boys and girls from the ages of 0-15 years for inclusion in the bags. Donations can be dropped off at a number of locations including Landsborough Post Office and Maleny Dairies. F: Smile Bags There are also a number of bush fire fundraising

events being promoted locally including one by Irish Joe Lynch to coincide with the launch of his new book at the Maleny RSL on Friday, February 7. Entry is free and donations will be taken at the door. All sales from Joe’s book will be going to the cause, meals will be on sale and some awesome live music is planned on the night including rock royalty Kevin Borich and local legend Kelly Cork. Doors open at 6pm. Heartspace Performing Arts Centre in Maleny is encouraging everyone to come together to raise funds on Friday, January 24 from 4.30–6pm at its studios at 23 Coral Street, Maleny. There will be a karaoke disco party and the cost is $5 per person. Local fire ban remain in place Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) has extended a local fire ban for North Coast Region residents. The local fire ban will remain in place until 7am on Monday, January 27 for residents in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Areas. Heightened fire conditions are perfect for bushfires to ignite and spread quickly. Under a local fire ban all open fires are prohibited and all Permits to Light Fire which have been issued in the designated areas have been cancelled. Power tools may be used during a local fire ban however QFES encourages people to use these with extreme care and ensure adequate equipment is available to extinguish any fire which may start. This may include having a person available to watch out for any ignitions that occur. Fires lit for the purpose of cooking are permitted under a local fire ban provided they are not left unattended, are within a properly constructed barbeque, smoker or oven and managed appropriately. Fires lit for the purposes of providing warmth are permitted between the hours of 6pm and 6am provided they are not left unattended, are within a properly constructed receptacle, are no larger than 1m x 1m x 0.5m, are used in a suburban back yard and are managed appropriately. This exemption does not apply to bonfires. Fires lit for the purpose of disposing of the carcass of a beast are permitted provided a permit has been issued by the local fire warden. Information on fire bans and the exemptions that can apply can be found on the RFS website, www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au.

The Coles development proposal on the corner of Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road, Beerwah continues to progress through Sunshine Coast Council’s development application system. In November, plans were released for a Coles supermarket, McDonald’s, petrol station, retail showroom, hardware/nursery, gym, bulky goods homemaker centre and a zone for service/light industry development on the 16.5 hectare site. The plans have been a hot topic of discussion around the region since then, with a series of stories and letters appearing in GC&M News late last year.

Council has conduct a preliminary review of the submitted documents and asked the applicant – Coles Group Property Developments Ltd – for more detailed information. Council made 12 information requests, ranging from significant conflicts with the planning scheme, to impacts on the character of Beerwah and surrounds. The applicant has until the start of March to respond to the information requests. To read more about the application, go to https:// developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU19/0270.

The proposal now sees stage one of the Actventure Waterpark development change to become a “resort complex (165 villas) and tourist attraction (waterpark)”. According to the application report, the proposed resort complex will offer a range of recreational facilities including “several food and drink outlets, pools, playgrounds/green spaces, retail outlets/

shops, indoor amusements, sports activities, spa and massage therapy, and water activities in the constructed lagoon”. The site has gone through a range of proposals, with the latest resort complex idea replacing the former proposed mix of cabins, powered caravan and camping sites, and glamping tents. As the site was previously given preliminary council approval for a resort complex and tourist attraction, the latest development application is considered code assessable, meaning that no official public submission period will be allowed. The waterpark component of the site appears to be significantly reduced from previous proposals. From schematics submitted with the latest application, the waterpark consists of three pool areas and a number of water slides. Former local celebrates 100 years Dorothy Price celebrated her 100th birthday on January 8 at NoosaCare Carramar, a nursing home in Tewantin, with loving family and friends. Dorothy has called the Sunshine Coast home for most of her life, including Witta and Bald Knob, and more recently at Tewantin, Caloundra and Marcus Beach as well as living in Rockhampton and Holland Park in Brisbane. Dorothy’s daughter, Barbara Richards of Maleny, said the song 'Neighbours become good friends' could have been composed for her mum. “Mum is a very friendly, kind and outgoing person who attracts people wherever she is,” Barbara said. In 1921, Dorothy Daniels, aged one year, moved to Bald Knob with her parents Allen and Millie Daniels and siblings Alfred ('Jum'), aged six and Winnie, aged three. Allen built his family a simple home. The cottage was on a five acre (two hectare) banana farm. It had two bedrooms, a verandah, a dining room and a kitchen with a wood stove. Outside were washing tubs with a wood copper to boil clothes before they were rinsed and blued. All clothes were wrung by hand. There was also an outside toilet with cut up newspaper for toilet paper. The farm was about one mile (1.6km) along a lane from the Maleny/Landsborough Road. A horse and slide (a type of trailer on low wooden runners like a toboggan or a sled) was the only transport to the main road. To travel to Landsborough for groceries or the railway station Dorothy's mum Millie had to go to the main road and wait for a lift from a truck going to the railway to pick up goods for the

A: It’s an adventure that involved paddling 404km over five days from Yarrawonga, on the Murray River near the south-west end of the Victoria-New South Wales border, to Swan Hill, on the Murray at the north-west end of the border. This is a charity race where you have to raise funds to participate so it was good to have more than 500 like-minded people around you for those days. As part of the organisation I cofounded with Jen Kranenburg, Believe in a Cause, I joined the event to help build a birthing suite and medical facilities in the Solomon Islands. Q: How much training did you do for the event? A: Training for this started about nine months before the event and started off with two or three sessions a week at about 10km, with the last six months training every day, one hour of cardio on a machine running or mountain biking and two 50km plus paddles per week on the water. People may have seen the red and grey kayak bobbing around Ewen Maddock Dam. Looking back, this is probably the bare minimum for anybody interested in doing the race.

Q: Tell us more about Believe in a Cause? A: I am raising funds and trying to make people aware of what you can do to help out in any community. The Believe in a Cause thinking is that that we all can make a difference in whatever area we’re passionate about. For this particular project BIC have linked up with the Rotary Club of Caloundra for a medical facility in the Solomon Islands. I have a web link with some photos I took when I was last there at www.believeinacause.org. Q: You ran a competition where people could purchase $10 tickets to predict your race finish times with daily cash prizes of $250 and a $1000 up for grabs for the full race. Can you tell us about people donating their prize money back to the cause? A: As part of fundraising for this race, we had prize money to predict my finish times of one $1,000 prize for the total race and $250 per day. I was lucky enough to know the ticket holder who picked the correct time for the $1,000. Once I told them they had won, they simply said: “Keep

it mate to go towards your project. I’m sure it will go to great use”. The other five participants also said similar things. This has been a very humbling experience, and coming down from an emotional high of participating in the race, these conversations were deeply rewarding. Q: Are you doing it again next year? A: Yes, I think I’ll do it again next year but I need to be fitter and stronger. Knowing that I’m doing it again will help me keep motivated with building my shoulders and body up. The only thing that I would do differently other than my fitness is to take a team down. Everyone down there had a support team and doing it solo seemed to be a lot tougher. Just getting food and water to the correct points, etc, was hard but the big thing that I noticed was that having a team down there would have been great just to laugh and tell stories at the end of the day. So, if any readers are interested, let me know and let’s see what we can do. Maybe it’s a cause that the local community could get behind for their own projects.

Maleny couple celebrate 60th wedding anniversary By Sonia Clark Val and Vince Carbery celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 19, followed by a party with family and friends on December 21 at the Maleny RSL – the same venue as their wedding reception in 1959. Val and Vince both grew up, met, married and worked in Maleny most of their lives. Valerie (nee Guille) was born in Maleny in 1937 and Vince, born in 1935, moved to Maleny with his family

in 1940. Like many couples of the era, the young sweethearts met at the Maleny RSL Hall at a dance and their first outing was to the "local pictures" on Christmas Eve 1956. Val worked at the Maleny Chemist until they were married and Vince was a local primary school teacher for 37 years until his retirement. All his teaching years were spent at Maleny primary school except for just four years from the beginning of 1959, when he was posted to Jandowae primary school in the Western Downs before returning to Maleny in January 1963. The couple got engaged in 1958 just before Vince was posted to Jandowae and married in the Maleny Catholic Church on December 19, 1959 followed by a reception at the RSL Hall. A newspaper article from that time beautifully captured a story outlining the outfits, styling and décor of their special day in intricate detail. Following the wedding, the couple moved to Jandowae in 1960, where their two oldest children, Graeme and Cathy, were both born. When the family returned to Maleny from Jandowae in February 1963 they bought their first house which remains their home to this day. The couple had four children (Graeme, Cathy, Susan and Alison), four grandchildren (Anelise, Adam, Luca and Gianni) and one great-grandchild Henry.

On the night of their 60th anniversary, family members took Val and Vince down to QPAC in Brisbane to watch grandson Gianni dance in 'The Nutcracker' with the Queensland Ballet. Readers may remember a story last November about the year 6 Maleny River School student dancing his way to success. All members of the couple’s wedding party are still alive, with some members at the anniversary party that was well attended by family and friends. Keep an eye out for our Wedding Feature on February 26 when we’ll revisit the 1959 newspaper articles of Val and Vince’s wedding to capture more details about their big day.

Pawesome news for dog owners Exciting news for dog owners - Sunshine Coast Council has launched an interactive mobile-friendly website designed to help dog owners identify off leash, on leash and prohibited areas in real time when they are on the go. The website https://dogs.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au is also accessible via council’s app. It helps people check where they are on a map and determine whether their dog should be on leash, can be off leash or where they aren’t allowed to go. It also provides locations for dog water bowls so you can keep your four-legged friends hydrated. The Sunshine Coast Council requires that dogs are on leash at all times unless otherwise signed. The map features colour-coded areas to show areas that are off leash at all times (green), off leash at specified times (blue), on leash at all times in a shared area (orange) and prohibited at all times (red). Community portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said the interactive website was another step in council’s commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership. “There are 13km of dog-friendly beach along our coastline as well as more than 25 fenced and unfenced dog parks across the region, so we hope this website will make it simple for dog owners, whether they be locals or visitors, to understand their responsibilities,” Cr McKay said. “This is the first release of the website and we’re planning additional features in future so we’d love to hear feedback on the site too. Give it a try next time you’re out walking your dog and send us any ideas you have for new features or improvements.” Division 3 councillor Peter Cox, who regularly walks his dog along the beach, said the best outcome would be everyone enjoying the outdoors in a safe environment and pet owners avoiding a fine. “There are more than 58,000 dogs registered on the Sunshine Coast so hopefully this new website will help their owners be more aware of where our off leash and on leash areas are,” Cr Cox said. As most people who use the website will be on the go it has been designed to be viewed on a mobile phone but can also be viewed on a computer from home. View the website at https://dogs.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or download the Sunshine Coast Council app and click on Things to Do. To submit feedback, click on the Feedback link below the map.

Chaplaincy supporting community

Contributed by Paul Tarbuck Chairperson, Maleny High School Local Chaplaincy Committee The impact of chaplaincy services at Maleny High School continues to be felt in the wider community following the Christmas hamper project that was undertaken in the last week of school for 2019. Chappy Micah Jones was joined by his employing agency Your Dream, members of the Quota Club of Maleny, the Maleny IGA, Rick and Fiona Nuttall and several students of Maleny High for the job of packing the hampers. IGA used funding from its central office to purchase a range of Community Co items and were also able to direct some funds to support Micah’s employment. A local branch of a not-for-profit tai chi group is offering complimentary try-it classes in Taoist tai chi to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Group members will be joining a dozen other branches of the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Australia to offer 50 open classes in 50 iconic locations around Australia during 2020. Group spokesperson Corinne Williams said the best way to appreciate the benefits of Taoist tai chi was to try it and the group was inviting everyone to join in one of the complimentary try-it classes. Many of the classes are being held outdoors in picturesque locations including at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve overlooking the Glass House Mountains on Thursday, January 30 from 8am, meeting in the picnic area. Taoist tai chi is designed to offer maximum health benefits and to recover the ancient Taoist methods of internal alchemy (internal transformation). It was introduced to the Western world 50 years ago this year by Taoist monk Master Moy Lin Shin, who had trained with masters of the Taoist arts in Hong Kong. His training helped him overcome the debilitating ill health he had suffered as a youth. He made a vow to devote the rest of his life to sharing his knowledge to help others. Today, 50 years later, residents of the Sunshine Coast are benefiting from the practise of this health art. If you would like to attend the try-it class in Maleny you don’t need to book just turn up on the day.

Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre

Contributed by Natasha Odgers Volunteers at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre celebrated their achievements and friendships at their annual Christmas lunch in December. The volunteers of this neighbourhood centre enjoy supporting people in need and connecting the community. Some wonderful memories were made at the centre during 2019 including celebrating the 80th anniversary of the building, which is currently home to the centre. A memoir book was produced for this occasion and copies are available at the centre as a keepsake of the times. The community choir and Glass Ukes formed and have brought great spirit to the centre, where many friendships have budded. These groups have already performed at a number of local community events. Another highlight was the very popular cultural sharing morning in Reconciliation Week, which followed into another cultural sharing event due to popular demand. The centre finished the year with a bang, having 180 people at the Community Christmas Party. A big thank you to all the wonderful volunteers of the neighbourhood centre and all those who supported the centre during the year. There are plenty of opportunities to join in the fun in 2020 by volunteering and becoming part of community events, projects, office roles and coordinating groups. Drop in for a cuppa and meet the friendly neighbourhood centre volunteers at Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains (opposite Australia Post). For further information about volunteering and what is on offer, and to subscribe to our newsletter, please contact the centre on 5438 7000 or email admin@ghmnc.com and find us on Facebook.

If you are heading into the library over the holidays you will find it much easier to find non-fiction books to get your teeth into thanks to an exciting change to our local libraries. Since the end of November, all non-fiction collections have been organised into 22 categories to make it easy to browse in your area of interest – similar to how you would search for a book in a book shop. Community programs portfolio councillor Jenny McKay applauded the initiative and said she hoped it would lead to a boost in people borrowing books. “This change will make it easier to find exactly what you’re looking for. For example, the creatives and hobbyists will find all the craft books in one place, while budding chefs will be able to head straight to the food and drink section to find the recipe book they’re after,” Cr McKay said. “Sunshine Coast residents love their books and this new arrangement will make it simpler to find the books they really want to read – hopefully encouraging more people to return to our libraries.’’ If you have any questions, you can speak with a library staff member to find out more. To keep up-to-date on library news subscribe to the library eNewsletter and follow Sunshine Coast Libraries on Facebook.

Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions looked back on 2019 with mixed feelings as they ended the year with a Christmas celebration at the Landsborough Hotel. It was a year that saw the club involved in a range of new initiatives across many areas but at the same time a year saddened by the devastating bush fires and their cost to the wellbeing of people and wildlife in the southern states. During the evening several Lions received awards for long service but the highlight of the evening came when past president Charles Farran presented secretary Justin Neubecker with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award (pictured). Melvin Jones, the founder of the Lions organisation, was a business man in Chicago when in 1917 he established a small service club to improve his community. Named LIONS to signify Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation's Safety, he probably didn’t know how large his venture would eventually become. Today awards in his name are awarded to Lions for exceptional dedication and achievement. Ladies auxiliary president Gail Farran reported on the club's success in putting together 20 hampers of Christmas goodies for underprivileged people. These were presented to The Shack Community Centre in Nambour and were passed on to deserving families, avoiding what otherwise would have been a bleak Christmas.

Every Christmas the members donate some money helping people who can do with a bit extra for Christmas. With support from Woolworths, Fresh & Save and the members we were able to give 16 President Esther Frizzo hands $25 gift cards to the Church on the Rise. over the vouchers to Pastor We are blessed to have our meetings twice Aaron Jackson a month at their venue and we appreciate all the extra help they give us over the year. We resume our meetings on Thursday, January 23. If you would like to be a part of our dynamic club, please call us on 5496 9855.

On December 8 Fran and Mark Staley of Beerwah brought their baby Rhys Tyler Staley for baptism by Rev Costa Stathakis. The family is pictured cutting the baptismal cake at morning tea after the service On December 15 Jessica and Damian Kelly brought their wriggly son Jordan to be baptised. For the past few months we have been pleased to share our building with the Seventhday Adventist congregation as they have been renovating their current church in Landsborough. You Said It Move on from climate debate

There is continual debate in this paper about climate change. I have been persuaded by the majority of scientists and the observations with my own eyes that something major is happening. Bush fires are bringing it home to Australians but around the world there are much less controversial signs, like the gradual melting of the glaciers. It seems to me that your usual correspondents are never going to change their standpoints. So I ask for another approach. None of us can be absolutely sure about the future so we weigh up the likelihood of various options. We wear seatbelts even though a car crash is unlikely, we insure our home against complete loss even though that is unlikely; we teach our children to be cautious around strange dogs even though a bite is unlikely, etc, etc. So, even if you believe climate change is unlikely or is not manmade, can you not accept we should take precautionary action? The cost of leaving coal and gas in the ground and of changing taxation to encourage us to behave in a more climate-friendly way is a small cost to pay compared to the risk of increasing temperatures, increasing sea levels and possible collapse of most of the eco systems we are familiar with. Surely we could all agree to be precautionary, move on from the stalemate of previous letters and start taking more interest in what we could do to live more climate-friendly lives. Christmas carols

To the people that partied in Turner Park during December - the ones drinking Iron Jack and VOK butterscotch schnapps - breaking the bottle under the table is an act of stupidity driven by egos, hormones and alcohol. Smashing a bottle and spreading it through the tan bark in the playground is an act of malicious intent. It is illegal and cruel and I pity you and the way your life is heading. Margaret Rouhan Beerwah Genghis Kahn along with a cavalry of several hundred thousand came, saw and conquered China, Asia and Eastern Europe in the 12th century. Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board looks the other way when the continent rumbles. Either side of the Newell Highway massive mobile sprinkler systems march like triffids across hot treeless laser-levelled paddocks stretching to the horizon, wafting groundwater into the Never Never. Temperatures soar close to 50 degrees. Surface and ground waters are now redirected to irrigate sorghum, cotton, sunflower, rice, turf, grapes, dairy cattle and earth lice (sheep) – oh! and fracking. Along the coastal strip, pop-up sprinklers, dams, swimming pools, tanks, water bottled in plastic, pump shops, bores galore like so many piercing parasites puncture the continent's skin. 230 years ago, none of them! Creeping normalcy or cognitive dissonance? It’s both! Foresters grow tree plantations like fields of

I attended the carols at the Beerwah Sportsground which gave me the impression that the carols were sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council. We have attended these carols before and we were expecting the traditional carols like the year before. However, we were disappointed as these carols were not traditional carols and I feel there were not any singalong carols for children and parents alike. I feel these carols were hijacked and I was not the only one as people were leaving by the droves. I stayed to about 7.45pm then left in disgust when a poem that I felt was offensive about Jesus, Mary and Joseph (I will not give the author any credit for his bad taste about the birth of Jesus) that was the last straw in what I thought was a bad Christmas carols event. Christmas is all about the birth of Christ and that is what we celebrate not someone on an ego trip. Michael Cushing Beerwah Letters continued on page 26

Green waste disposal

In the spirit of the season (and common sense) I would like to ask the Sunshine Coast Council to waive the green waste dumping fees. Considering the ongoing drought and total fire ban that is in place, I think this strategy is warranted. In the area where I live, behind Cahill's Scrub the council approved street trees that are proving to be an extreme hazard. The lemon scented gums are doing what gums do in times of extreme stress and are shedding leaves and branches. Each year they drop all their bark and the residents diligently clean the footpaths of this mess and normally burn it or place it in their gardens. The situation has arisen where upon the leaves are now collecting in the storm water drains and banking up gutters, yards and footpaths in amounts that are out of control. In accordance with fire emergency guidelines we are all trying to keep this litter under control in the street and around our homes but as these trees continue to shed leaves and limbs (some large) we have no way of disposing of them except to take them to the dump. The waste station seems to be very subjective with their pricing. On one day I was charged $5 for a ute load of green waste and on another $16 for around the same load! This seems extraordinary to say the least. I strongly suggest that in these severe fire conditions, lives and property override revenue raising. Residents who are doing the council's work of keeping the streets free of litter should be encouraged to use the green waste dumping facility free of charge as is the case in other extreme weather events such as cyclones. This would also prevent the disposing of green waste in the bushland, which appears to be happening. This is creating more fuel in the event of a fire. Green waste disposal should be free of charge or at least have a voucher system as is the case with other councils. Let's all pull together on this one. Communities don't mind doing their bit but they need the backing of the council for effective solutions for their protection and that of the environment. Sandra Poole Peachester

Climate change – please act

To Andrew Wallace, federal Member for Fisher, and Andrew Powell, state Member for Glass House, you both belong to political parties whose reputation on addressing climate change is, to put it mildly, inadequate. Current climatic conditions, with fires of unheralded intensity, the worst drought in history, are undoubtedly due to decades of a lack of commitment worldwide to doing anything serious about reducing carbon dioxide emissions to our atmosphere. The science is in; it has been in for decades. To stop global warming, we all must change the many ways our global communities operate. Australia’s efforts, particularly by conservatives, have been abysmal. Liberal leadership has always been negative leadership, driven by troglodytic climate deniers on the extreme right and the National Party. Remember! Andrew Robb collapsing the HowardRudd agreement to introduce carbon pricing. Remember! Abbott/Credlin and their dishonest destruction of the “carbon tax”. Remember! Turnbull’s parliamentary ejection partly based on his support for a likely bipartisan energy agreement, the NEG. And now we have a fool acting as our federal Environment Minister - it is sort of like having 26

Dracula run the blood bank! Please don’t quote that Liberal nonsense about meeting our Kyoto commitments! All Australians and the rest of the world see Australia’s pseudo-accounting emissions excuses as a joke. But what’s not funny are the grievous losses to farmers, burned-out householders or weary firefighters! Mr Wallace, it’s time for our MP, you, to stand up, have some guts and convince your peers to roll the Liberal Neanderthals in Canberra. Mr Powell, you were our state Environment Minister. It’s time for you to stand up, have some guts, like your NSW peer, and pressure your federal counterparts to just do something! How about a bipartisan climate change action meeting? Bush camps and fires

There are continuing problems with teenage drug camps in the local bushland reserves in the Beerwah region. I refer especially to the Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve (UCCER) but am aware this is a widespread problem throughout the Sunshine Coast Council area (and probably the state generally). The problem is from cigarette smoking and fires to heating up drug use apparatus. There needs to be a concerted campaign to drive home the importance of care over fires and disposal of cigarette butts, especially in view of the expected extended and extreme fire danger that now prevails. When combined with drugs this produces a situation where it is only a matter of time before the UCCER catches fire. This will result in adjacent houses and the high school going up in flames, let alone the destruction of rare plants on Rupari Hill. Parents and schools have a serious responsibility to instil fire care into our young people. The message is obviously not getting through. Teenagers these days will seek out hidden spots to try out drugs. Legalising some drugs may mean this behaviour will be easier to monitor (and has been shown to reduce drug deaths). It would be better done in some backyard shed than in inflammable bushland. It has also always amazed me that smokers should casually throw burning cigarettes onto the ground. This is common from cars but also among walkers and cyclists. I have had many overseas visitors express amazement at this habit in a country as prone to bushfires as Australia. This needs to be unlawful and attract heavy fines. Campers and picnickers also need to take more care - I have often found camp fires still smouldering in reserves. Carefully controlled patch burning would also help reduce large accumulations of litter on the forest floor. A fire levy may be necessary to fund such work. These matters are a concern for all. Roger Callen Beerwah

Government policy and the bush fires

The Morrison government’s commitment of $2.6 billion towards fire relief is very welcome but a long-term strategy is needed. Australia has the second highest carbon emissions per person on Earth. Climate change does not create bushfires but it makes them worse. 2019 was the hottest and driest on record, and 25 people have died and almost 2,000 homes have been lost. Parents have to keep their children indoors because of the poisonous fumes. The bush fire season is longer and affecting all states except the Northern Territory. The government has called in the Australian Defence Force, which it previously stated was unnecessary.

Australia is burning and the smoke from the bushfires is making people very ill. It’s time for the LNP to listen to what the country is saying instead of being paralysed by the idea of discussing climate change. Anne Philtrip Maleny

What have we done to deserve this?

On the morning of January 5 we watched the ABC bush fire report in horror. The desolation that engulfed the south eastern states was unimaginable. The tragedy of lives lost, homes and properties destroyed, businesses incinerated. We feel physically unwell! And this is not the end. There are many more months of summer. The people of this nation are angry. For more than 10 years, scientists have warned us that this disaster was coming. Our leaders like a comfortable business-as-usual, nothing-to-see-here approach. To our shame, our federal government ministers are an embarrassment to the country. Because of their attitudes Australia is viewed as a global pariah. In the LNP we have a government that didn’t deserve to win and didn’t have a plan! A government that bought that win, gaining power by doing deals with billionaires. We have a Prime Minister who believes that he has the power to introduce legislation even if it marginalises and discriminates against already disadvantaged citizens, and who took the country backwards in socially progressive programs. ScoMo is not my Prime Minister. He has neither the intelligence nor the compassion of Hawke and lacks the common sense of Howard. I seethe when people say he won a magnificent victory at the polls. He has a majority of one, easily lost by any one of his dubious crew, unaccountable in their actions and loose with the truth on the floor of Parliament. This is the worst federal government I have ever experienced in my almost 80 years. ScoMo is possibly the most incompetent leader ever let loose upon us. Pam Maegdefrau Montville

Re: Stop whingeing and be happy

I am very puzzled by the letter in GC&M News (December 11) complaining of poor customer service in local businesses. I have shopped locally for the past 45 years and have always found staff to be extremely polite, pleasant and helpful. I have never come across the sour, unfriendly, uninviting faces that the writer found to be such a turn-off. Joan Tucker Glass House Mountains

Hinterland Kids get active Glass House Mountains District Park is a hidden gem By Lea Parkes I dropped by the Glass House Mountains District Park last week to see how the park’s upgrade was coming along and got chatting to some local mums whose kids have been enjoying the new facilities during the school holidays. The playground equipment has recently been expanded giving school-aged kids a great variety of challenges. One of the mums, Amanda McColl, who regularly uses the park including for kids parties, described it as a “hidden gem”. Her friend Brook Cittolin agreed. The two mums were unsure that they wanted GC&M News to spread the news of just what a great spot it is because they quite like not having to share it!

Another mum told me how much the kids liked the additional concrete paths, which are great for bikes and scooters. The park already had one big picnic shelter with two tables and a barbeque area, and the upgrade has seen an additional picnic shelter, more seating and improvements have been made to the fenced dog park.

Cooper Cittolin, Mason Argue, Lilly-anne Cittolin, Patrick Jackson and Beau Argue kids that won’t break the bank, grab a picnic and head to the park.

Part of the reason the mums reckon that the park is a bit of a hidden gem is that people from outside of Glass House Mountains might not know how to access it. However, new public art/ entry statements have been installed and signage put up on the corner of Page Street and Gardner Street off Coonowrin Road, and along Railway Parade. With still a week or so left of the school holidays, if you are looking for something to do with the

Keeping the kids busy GC&M News shared photos some kids at play on Facebook and asked how other local families have been keeping the kids amused these school holidays. We got some great responses, with lots involving getting wet in the pool, at the beach, in the dam, and under the hose. Others had visited Australia Zoo and been to the movies. Not surprisingly, no one shared a photo of their kids on a device - actually there was no technology in any of the photos, which was great. Here a just a few of the photos we received.

Tip for January

When you do the maths, taking a sandwich wrapped in cling wrap to school or work each day creates a lot of landfill waste over the year, which will be buried for hundreds of years after being used just once. The return to school or work at the start of the year is a great opportunity to look at ways to reduce singleuse plastic packaging in our lunchboxes. War on Waste

From the churches I recently took our car to the northside of Brisbane for a service. I confess that I don’t find the whole process much fun. Before we moved to Maleny we bought the car in Brisbane and it came with an extra warranty for a couple of years but the catch was to keep the car’s servicing with the dealership. It was no problem when we lived closer but now it’s an effort and inconvenience! It would be easier and cheaper to ignore the servicing of our car in the short term but in the long run it would most likely cost us dearly. Maintaining what we’re responsible for doesn’t take much convincing. If we don’t look after our deck at home it will deteriorate and perish. If we don’t maintain our health we will face medical issues. If we don’t keep an eye on our finances we potentially run into troubles. I realise that no one is perfect and at times we overlook things, whatever our best intentions or efforts are. I’ve mentioned possessions. What about

Health &Beauty Introducing podiatrist Lucy Smith

The newest member of the Stepping Out Podiatry team is Sunshine Coast local Lucy Smith, who is working across the three clinics in Beerwah, Landsborough and Maleny. Lucy’s interest in health was sparked at an early age as she was involved in various sports throughout her schooling years. From wanting to fit as many different types of sport as possible into her day, it was suggested that she try podiatry due to its diversity. Lucy fell in love with the profession while completing her Bachelor of Podiatry at the Queensland University of Technology. Lucy’s decision to work as a podiatrist was cemented when her grandfather was no longer able to reach his feet/toenails and Lucy was able to assist him to safely and comfortably walk. It was then she realised how much of a positive impact she could make to the people in her local community. When Lucy’s not helping hinterland locals with their podiatry needs, chances are you can find her on a hockey field, taking her dog for a walk or testing out her culinary skills in the kitchen. Make an appointment with Lucy by phoning 1300 881 082 or emailing info@steppingoutpodiatry.com.au.

Dine In Take Out these holidays with Lea Parkes

Mrs Browns Espresso & Bar

Normally when I head out to do a write up for Dine In Take Out I go with one of the GC&M News team. Last week we were joined by some younger locals who were home on school holidays. I know Mrs Browns at Beerwah Village is popular with families as whenever we drop in there are tables with young children (always well behaved) playing games and enjoying something from the menu. Lainey and Amali were already big fans of Mrs Brown’s milkshake menu and scones for afternoon tea on a school day but they were really happy to choose something for lunch (for the benefit of this article). I can confirm that Lainey was most impressed with her iced chocolate and chicken nachos and Amali gave her soft shell tacos and a mango smoothie two thumbs up. Their mum Tina and I went for some of the vegetarian options on the menu.

New Menu Coming

Kid's menu

Tina enjoyed the vegetable stack with a turmeric latte and I have to say the toastie with a chickpea and pumpkin pattie on gluten-free bread and the macadamia milk mocha definitely impressed. The café’s menu is extensive and includes a comprehensive kids menu, as well as tapas, breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. There is definitely something for everyone at any time of the day.

Beerwah Village (outside Target) Simpson Street Monday-Wednesday 8am-5pm Thursday-Saturday 8am-10pm Sunday 8am-2pm Chicken nachos - corn chips layered with melted cheese tomato salsa, sour cream, avocado and pulled chicken

Things to do World’s greatest divas visit Caloundra

Eudlo Hall hosts Rory McLeod

Australia’s six-foot something songstress, Prada Clutch, will pay tribute to the world’s greatest divas in Les Divas: An All-Male Revue at The Events Centre Caloundra on Friday, February 28. Les Divas will see Cher (aka Prada Clutch) opening her show on the Las Vegas strip with some of her most famous diva friends including Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Diana Ross. The 90-minute all-male revue will take audiences down memory lane to relive their greatest hits including 'If I could turn back time', 'Get the party started', 'Proud Mary', 'I will always love you' and 'I’m coming out'. Featuring a cast of seven, Les Divas is choreographed by Stephen Clarke who has worked with renowned divas including Kylie and Dannii Minogue, Cyndi Lauper and Diana Ross. Creative direction is by Monique Kelly, an original cast member of the Les Girls of Kings Cross from 1973 to 1997. Tickets are $65, $60 concession and children, or $58 for a group of ten or more. For bookings call 5491 4240 or visit www.theeventscentre.com.au.

Galapagos Duck back on the coast

Rory McLeod, a solo folk musician from the Scottish Borders, will perform at the Eudlo Hall on Friday, February 7. This will be his only Sunshine Coast gig en route to the Illawarra and Cygnet Folk Festivals. Rory is an ex-circus clown and fire eater who has played harmonica and guitar with Michelle Shocked, Ani DiFranco, Butch Hancock, Michael Franti, Townes Van Zandt and with the West African guitarist Ali Farke Toure and Taj Mahal, and Madagascan group Tarika. He has also enjoyed creative collaborations with Moroccan oud virtuoso Hassan Erraji, Northumbrian pipes virtuoso Kathryn Tickel, Irish banjo virtuoso Paul Rodden and pedal steel guitar virtuoso BJ Cole. Doors open at 6.30pm with bar and snacks available. Tickets are $20-$25 and can be purchased on the night.

The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club welcomes back Galapagos Duck on Sunday, January 19 at Caloundra Power Boat Club from 1.30pm. Galapagos Duck began in the late 1960s while the members were engaged in a winter season at the New South Wales skiing resort, the Kosciusko Chalet at Charlotte Pass. After returning to Sydney the band became well known in the Australian jazz and music scene during the '70s when it was the house band at the emerging jazz night club The Basement near Circular Quay. Since these humble beginnings the Duck has become one of the best known jazz bands in Australia and a household name throughout the country. This was a sell-out show last year so early booking is recommended by phoning 0427 782 960 or online at the Jazz Club’s website www.sunshinecoastjazzclub.net.au. Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for nonmembers and $22.50 for seniors, with credit card facilities available for bookings or at the door. More information is available at the club's Facebook page or by emailing suncoastjazz2@gmail.com.

If one of your new year’s resolutions was to try to become a better gardener you’re in luck. Not only can you (hopefully) gain some inspiration from this weekly gardening page in GC&M News but you also have the opportunity to take advantage of a great range of events and happenings coming up around the region specifically for gardeners. One good example is the mushroom growing workshop coming up at the Maleny Library in March (see story below). Other ideas include workshops and speakers during the Ginger Festival this weekend – one being our own Ann Ross from Hive Haven (see www.gingerfactory.com.au/ginger-flower-food-festival). And don’t forget that there are some wonderful and friendly gardening and interest groups locally where you can meet and talk and learn from other locals. In the last edition of each month GC&M News prints – on this gardening page – a list of some of the local groups, their events for the next moth and their contact details. It’s a great way for you to learn more and become involved in a rewarding, supportive and friendly group environment. Here’s a list of those we feature each month – Permaculture Maleny, Native Plants Sunshine Coast, Elimbah-Caboolture Herb Club, FaunaWatch, Peachester Garden Club and Glasshouse Country Orchid Society. Look out for what they’re up to in the January 29 edition and check each week for updates on any other events you may be interested in. I look forward to bringing you great gardening stories throughout 2020. If you have something you’d like to contribute or a question you need answered, contact me on brownie@gcnews.com.au.

Growing oyster mushrooms

Would you like to start cultivating your own oyster mushrooms at home? Join local entrepreneurs and gourmet mushroom specialists Daniel and Katrina from Mountaintop Mushrooms for some expert advice at the Maleny Library on Saturday, March 14, at 9.30am. The program includes: • A look at the life cycle of fungi and about how it grows. • Introduction to edible and medicinal mushrooms and some of their health benefits. • Tips on low-tech oyster mushroom cultivation techniques with the recommended equipment on show. • Learning about ideal spaces and environments for growth. Cost to attend is $30 and each participant receives a take-home oyster mushroom kit with everything you need to get started. Registrations open on Monday, January 20 at 9am online at https://library. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Whats-On/Lifelong-Learning/Growing-Oyster-Mushrooms.

Sport Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Tennis is introducing seriously unserious tennis with open court sessions. All the gear but no idea? You're in the right place. Open court sessions is a new and great way to get out and meet new people, have a laugh and play tennis at your skill level – with a killer soundtrack, naturally. Sessions last about 90 minutes and players have a 10-minute warm up, 50-minutes of tennis activities and 30 minutes of socialising. On court, you'll play different tennis activities including tennis on smaller courts and triples on a full-sized court. Off court, you'll make new friends over a drink or a bite to eat. You don’t need any equipment or any tennis skills - just rock up and have a hit. Starting Monday, February 3 at 6pm the cost is $15 per person. Book online at https://play. tennis.com.au. Social tennis is on Mondays at 8am and Saturdays at 1pm. All welcome. Court bookings 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

New equipment for Little As Glasshouse District Little Athletics at Skippy Park, Landsborough recently received a $2,100 grant from Coles to buy brand new sports gear thanks to funds raised through the sale of Coles’ community chiller bags. Glasshouse Little Athletics centre manager John Byford said the grant would make a big difference to the centre, which needed new equipment to continually provide a high quality and safe weekly experience for its young athletes. “We currently have several athletes with sensitivities to the sound of cap guns. With the Coles grant we’ll be able to buy an electronic starting system that will enable us to adjust the noise levels and sound of the starting gun,” John said. “The new equipment will vastly improve the experiences of all athletes at our club,” he said. Coles state general manager Jerry Farrell said Coles was delighted to provide grants to help Little Athletics centres in locations such as Landsborough. “The Glasshouse Little Athletics centre told us they would like to receive a grant to buy an electronic starting system and we were delighted to help because we know this is an essential part of Little Athletics to support young budding athletes and parent volunteers,” he said. Funds for the grants are raised through the sale of specially-marked chiller bags designed by nine-year-old Lachie Macdonald from Victoria and 12-year-old Charlie De Bruyn from Western Australia. For every bag sold, 25 cents goes to the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to provide sport equipment grants.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Our 2020 season started last week with the great turnouts showing folks are keen to catch up over a bowl, burger and cold beer - not always in that order. Wednesday night bowls started with a clubselected team-building group of games. Fun was had in welcoming some new teams. Bowlers of any level should meet at the club at 6pm for 6.30pm start for Wednesday night bowls. Everyone will be allocated to a team so that no one misses out. It was a good start by new team the Groovers, who celebrated pushing past the immediate past season’s winners. Mitre 10 felt robbed with a last bowl loss. Some teams didn't play all their shots choosing a slower start to the season, realising as it's a long way to the main event and adopting a more controlled approach. Ian Dickson summed it up nicely for half the teams by saying don't waste good bowls on pre-season games. Shows the adrenaline is high, talk is cheap, bring it on. All teams celebrated a good first up outing to welcome in a new decade of fun-based bowls.

Looking forward to more reports on the skill set of our new 2020 crew. Scroungers saw 18 folk make the most of the minor changes to the handicap limits. Christmas cheer didn't upset the bowling of a number of our regulars. Relma Godfrey showed good form on her rink. John Williams came under the notice of the handicapper for a good first up win. Jim Wiedman showed that even the handicapper can't keep him out of the winners' circle. Dave Coffey continued some solid form for a good first up win. A reminder to book in for games as per the notice board at the clubhouse. As the first report of the year I would like to thank all the volunteers who have already stepped up to continue serving on the board and helping in the clubhouse or on the greens to make Maleny Bowls Club a great venue for so many. Remember volunteering is the best way to value-add experience for all within the community. See you all on the green or in the clubhouse in 2020.

Sport The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Benign weather conditions are luring people to Maleny Showgrounds to enjoy the lawns, which appreciated the rain over Christmas. When there is a south-easterly, lawn one, the Eileen Harrison lawn, may well be the most pleasant place in Maleny and even possibly in the south east. Thursday, January 2 saw Donna Manning and Helen Andrews fight Kath Smith to a six-all draw. Ken Barker played Nick Cram beating him 17–6 in a game where Nick seemed to have all of the bad luck and Ken the good. The wheel always turns as far as luck goes. On Sunday, January 5 Helen and Ken played Donna and Kath in a topsy turvy game where players looked like having good breaks ahead then missed three-foot roquets. After a pleasant cup of tea it was decided to resume play briefly and the final score ended up with Ken and Helen on 15 and Donna and Kath on 11. A visit from the Range Care group on Tuesday, January 7 went well with 17 guests relishing the beautiful conditions on the lawn. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm. In the second division tournament held last November this is an example of a fine shot being played by Vince Carbery. The green ball is going somewhere past the peg in the direction of hoop four and the pink ball should end up somewhere behind the brown so that it can be rushed towards hoop three making it easier to approach with pink.

Just for Laughs Simple explanation

GCNews Crossword 720 1

Following a man's physical exam, the doctor delivered some bad news. "Your white blood cells are elevated," he said. "What does that mean?" his wife asked. Looking concerned, the doctor explained. "Up."

my girlfriend’s having an affair with a German shepherd and I’m as nervous as a cat.” “Why don’t you go see a psychiatrist,” suggests the collie. “I can’t,” says the poodle. “I’m not allowed on the couch.”

Did you hear about the new restaurant called Karma? There’s no menu. You get what you deserve.

Your Stars ARIES March 21 – April 20 The start of your New Year is more likely to be Friday the 17th when Mercury goes into Aquarius. With Mars also moving along in Sagittarius we have the Fire and Air combination to sweep you onto any travel plans you may have. A grouping of planets in Capricorn means you have to deal with responsibilities. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Relationships may suffer a little from mid-month as Venus transits into Aquarius and lines up with Aquarian energy under the transit of the Sun shifting into that sign. However, it is perfect energy to look for new employment! January has a special blessing as more than four planets in compatible Earth signs all join together through Capricorn. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Experiment with many new kinds of jobs or technology. Consult a lawyer to discuss wills, inheritance and other important issues that involve other people’s money. Review stocks and investment opportunities as well as your insurance now. An insurance policy may also be up for a change that saves money and time later. CANCER June 22 – July 22 2020 has kindness from others that can help you through difficult times as well as good ones. Health and working conditions are also going through a transformation now. This month will bring a legal matter to your attention. Allow your companion to make a suggestion and listen to their advice. Perhaps adjust your values with others.

with Edgar J. Winter www.astroclairvoyant.com

LEO July 23 – August 23 Do some entertaining or attend shows, have fun and romance is certainly possible! Do keep your promises regarding diet and exercise this month. Remember how stress affects your physical health. Because of the major shift in the star formations, you may find yourself in a new work environment. Mercury stimulates your mind with new ideas. VIRGO August 24 – September 23 Problems will be resolved by the Scorpio Moon on the 18th and 19th. With the Chinese New Year on the 25th you had best check your Chinese sign to see how the New Year might fit those predictions. At month’s end the Moon again moves through Pisces and that suits travel plans over water, or short visits to neighbours by the 31st. LIBRA September 24 – October 23 With the Moon in your sign on the 16th and 17th travel plans become exciting and the Chinese New Year on the 25th brings news of plane travel interstate. Make every opportunity to go out socially and make new contacts. Invite others to join you for the Chinese New Year to celebrate your new beginnings. Let others know exactly how you feel. SCORPIO October 24 – November 22 It is likely that you are being involved in several projects all at the same time, which alleviates your boredom and keeps the mind sharp and receptive. If you do have a sensible partner, sit back and follow their directive for a change. Towards month’s end there is light shed on your career and work environment and you deserve the recognition.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 21 You and your partner will be in earnest discussions on 16th and 17th and plans for travel are made from the 20th to the 25th, so the Chinese New Year will give you a burst of independence! The month finishes with the Moon sign in Aries from the 30th and 31st to give you a forward leap into February. The New Moon brings clarity to your mind. CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 Send positive thoughts to others less fortunate and be receptive to the positive energy that will return. Fulfil any duties that you may have to your parents. Partnership issues experience a small crisis to resolve on the 16th and 17th. The Moon in Capricorn will be on the 23rd and 24th of the month and a bright new opportunity will exist, that you should receive word of. AQUARIUS January 21 – February 18 With regard to your pets, if you have any, use this time to tune into their thoughts and feelings. On the 21st of the month you have a promise of revitalising and renewal of your general health. Tune into any dreams for answers. They may add just the spark you need to pursue future projects. The New Year will see you gifted with realism and sound judgement. PISCES February 19 – March 20 This year you are engaged with a task and a definite aim. Neptune, your ruling planet, was in the sign of Pisces all last year and now at long last is moving direct. It will still remain in Pisces right up to December 2020.
