Hi Everyone

A

s much as I love my job, coming back to work after a relaxing and stress free three week break can be a little challenging!

However, the last week of this year’s break provided enough stress for me that the idea of getting back into the office and back to normal is very enticing.

Unfortunately at this stage it is probably still at least five weeks until I get fully back to work.

This year we decided to head up to Coolum – stay in a unit with a balcony and a great view of the beach and just spend some time kicking back, relaxing, swimming in the pool, going to the beach, and have barbeque lunches, that kind of stuff.

And the holiday was a great success, on the final morning we packed up the car and walked up to a cafe (two doors away) to have breakfast and sit and look out over the ocean one final time.

Ahh the perfect end to a lovely holiday and then just a couple of 100 metres from the car I managed to take a fall on the footpath – end of great holiday and start of fractured leg and getting around in a wheel chair.

And before anyone writes ‘a letter to the editor’ advising me how fortunate I am that it wasn’t far worse, or that it is a temporary injury, I have been reminding myself of that constantly.

I have to say now I definitely have a much better understanding of some of the challenges people with limited mobility face each day.

I am not complaining – I just wanted to make sure everyone is aware that I may be a little harder to get a hold of as I will be doing most of my work from home until I am mobile once again. (This won’t stop me talking on the phone or answering emails.)

Fortunately we have a great team at GCNews who are keen to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible until I return properly.

Thanks to everyone who has been so helpful and supportive, it definitely makes me realise what a great group of family, friends, work colleagues, community contacts and business networks that I have.

Glenview is where The Wild Thing lives

The range of talented young sporting stars that live within our Glasshouse Country community is truly amazing and one Glenview local, Tyler Manawaroa a mixed marital arts fighter will soon be sharing his talents with a much bigger viewing audience.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), for those not familiar with the term, is an extreme combat sport in which contestants are permitted to use the fighting techniques of wrestling and boxing but also those of martial arts such as kickboxing, judo, and karate.

With roots in Brazil in the early 1900’s – where it was called vale tudo – MMA has developed into a highly regulated and controlled professional sport which has grown across the globe into one of the fastest growing spectator sports, thanks mainly to extensive coverage via pay-tv.

With a 10-0 professional win/loss record, Tyler (19) seems set for possible international success after winning a spot in the Australian team as a middleweight fighter to compete against Canada in ‘The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Australia v’s Canada’.

The competition bouts have taken place in Montreal, Canada over a six week period and will be televised on Foxtel’s FX channel over a 12-episode season commencing from January 16, with a live televised three hour finale.

Tyler (centre back) with the Australian and Canadian Mixed Martial Arts team Tyler (nicknamed ‘The Wild Thing’) will be competing for the chance to win a six-figure contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship organisation, which hosts the top-ranked world fighters and produces events across the globe.

Born in New Zealand but now a Glenview local, Tyler competed for the first time in 2011.

Prior to that he was a rugby player.

“I was 16 and just about to turn 17 when I made my debut as a fighter. As soon as I had the fight I knew that it was what I wanted to do. I loved it,” Tyler recently told Fight Australia.

“These days I train five days a week, three times a day. I plan to pretty much keep focused on fighting but I’m also a personal trainer, so that along with my fight career keeps me pretty busy.”

When donating is just plain dumping The recent release of the NAB Charitable Giving Index shows that Beerwah ranks in the top 20 Queensland suburbs in the generosity stakes. It seems that Beerwah locals are a charitable bunch.

And our local charities need all the help they can get.

So it is disappointing then that a small percentage of people continue to blatantly be doing the wrong thing and using charity bins and op shops as dumping grounds for unwanted furniture, clothing, other household items and, unfortunately, their unwanted rubbish.

When staff and volunteers at the Endeavour Foundation Shop in Beerwah arrived at work recently, they found themselves blocked from entering the store as someone had dumped two couches on the footpath in front of the store doors.

Store Manager Yvonne said fortunately the truck coming to pick up from the charity bins arrived and while they couldn’t take the items with them, the driver had just enough time to assist them in moving the items so they could at least get into the shop.

“We are grateful for donations of good, clean items – but we can’t handle large items here and if people would just contact us, we can organise for their collection,” she said.

If people are taking the trouble to drive and dump them in town – they could just as well take them to the Beerwah Recycle Market, where Community Recycling will sell them and the money gets donated back into the community anyway.”

And it’s not the first time that things have been dumped at the shop.

“We have signage at the shop and next to the charity bins asking people not to dump donated goods, but it keeps happening.

“If the items are useful to us, they either tend to be stolen, vandalised or ruined by rain before we can do anything with them.

“If something is damaged or broken, it will still be damaged or broken if you give it to us – so it’s not something we can use in our charitable efforts. It just costs us time and more importantly money to deal with – which then takes resources away from our campaigns to support local needy people.

“The best place for these items is the recycle market,” she said

Last year was the first time we have offered to be a depot for gifts for the Kids in Care Christmas Appeal and we were blown away by the generosity of locals.

There were a number of people who returned each week over the month long collection, after they had done the shopping with additional gifts.

We have decided that GCNews will continue our involvement in 2014 – so this year you have a bit more notice if you wanted to put a few items away throughout the year.

Our lovely staff has also been talking about instead of doing our own ‘secret santa’ we might just all buy a gift to go under the tree this year.

We just wanted everyone who participated to know that their efforts were appreciated!

Tennis Club the winner Landsborough Tennis Club hit the jackpot just before Christmas when Andrew Powell announced that the club had received $100,000 in funding from round 2 of the State Government’s ‘Get Playing and Get Going’ funding.

Andrew Powell MP said in this round, two clubs in the Glass House Electorate will share in $139,395 of Get Playing funding to improve their infrastructure and facilities.

Landsborough Tennis Club Incorporated received the funding to upgrade court surface and ancillary facilities and the Maleny Rangers Football Club Incorporated ($39,395 Get Playing) to upgrade lighting on one field.

• Elimbah Ladybirds Netball Club Incorporated ($9,780 Get Going) to provide coach and umpire accreditation, first aid and club management training to volunteers and purchase equipment.

• Spiders Boxing Club Incorporated ($6,950 Get Going) to conduct a membership drive, accredit and support volunteers and purchase equipment.

• Maleny Golf Club Incorporated ($6,384 Get Going) to conduct a series of promotional come and try events, provide introductory skills sessions for new members and purchase junior equipment.

• Palmwoods Western Districts Junior Rugby League Football Club Incorporated ($5,566 Get Going) to conduct come and try activities, accredit volunteers and purchase sports equipment.

Round three of Get Started, the third program in the Get in the Game initiative, is due to open in early 2014 and assists children and young people with the costs to join a sport or recreation club.

Thanks to Glasshouse Mountain's Ulysses Club, on Sunday, December 8 Santa traded in his sleigh for a thundering motorcycle to give residents and families a one-of-a-kind visit.

After riding in on their head-turning Harleys and Triumphs, Santa and his Ulysses Club helpers walked through Embracia in Glasshouse Country delivering a special gift to each of the 99 aged care residents.

For those keen on a slice of adventure, there was the opportunity to take a ride on a bike or a trike to experience the thrill, exhilaration and roar that only a motorcycle offers.

The smiles on everyone's faces said it all. One resident beamed “wait until I tell my children and grand children what I got up to today, they won’t believe I rode a motorbike,” while another resident commented, “you have absolutely made my year!”

It was an unforgettable experience for the entire home and left many reminiscing and sharing stories about the bikes they used to own and love.

Baroon Pocket and Ewen Maddock Dams to be opened up to further recreation Two of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular dams will be further improved following community feedback as part of the most extensive review of recreation at South East Queensland’s lakes and dams ever undertaken.

Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle has launched the new recreation guides for Baroon Pocket and Ewen Maddock Dams which deliver on the Newman Government election promise to build tourism.

Mr McArdle said the guides set out the range of recreation activities permitted at the lakes, the changes to be made and the facilities available to the public.

“This feedback was an opportunity for Queenslanders to have their say on our natural resources that were clearly under-utilised by the former Labor Government,” Mr McArdle said.

“While the community consultation revealed we’ve largely got the recreation mix right at these lakes, paddlers will enjoy some changes at both locations.”

Mr McArdle said Seqwater planned to reopen the scenic upper reaches of Baroon Pocket Dam to paddle craft and fishing, and was investigating ways to enhance the paddle craft access to Ewen Maddock Dam from Maddock Park.

“There is also good news for trail users, walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers, with plans to work with Sunshine Coast Council to improve the Gympie Street North entry point to the Ewen Maddock trail network.

“Improving access to the trail networks will better connect Landsborough locals with the wonderful lake right on their doorstep.”

On behalf of Chappy D (Donna) from Beerburrum State School and Chappy Linda (Beerwah and Landsborough State Schools) Mike thanked his ‘awesome’ committee. Some have served for 10 and 20 years working to raise funds for chaplaincy in the High School and now still faithfully working for chaplaincy in five Glasshouse Country Schools.

Even though each school receives a grant from the government, funds still have to be raised locally as it does not fully cover the employment costs.

These chaplains have a heart to help and make a huge difference in the lives of staff and students.

Amelia is a beautiful

For the last two years, local photographer Kathy Hill from Whisper Images has been involved in a project called Sunshine Coast’s Best Friends, Pets and Their People, which has involved raising funds for the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge through the production of an emotive, fun, and entertaining coffee table book containing images of pets and their human owners.

The project creates a great opportunity for pet lovers to have some amazing images created and to be featured in the collector's edition book whilst helping raise much-needed funds for Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge.

Participation is just $75.00 and includes a photography session plus guaranteed inclusion in the book. All proceeds are donated to Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge.

The book gives you an opportunity to share what your pet means to you, personalised stories and some heart moving memories.

The Beerwah CWA would like to express its gratitude to Landsborough School of Arts

Not being as organised with bringing lunches to work as I should be, it is very easy to just pop into Glass House and grab a coffee and lunch, especially these days with 7 Secrets being open during the day.

What’s in store for 2014 Happy New Year to all residents of Glasshouse Country. The chamber had a very successful 2013 concluding with ‘Shop Local 1ST’ campaign. The chamber members thank you for your support. This promotion will continue for the next few months, promoting the members and the services they provide for you.

The excitement that will be generated by the beautification of Simpson Street in Beerwah with the new opportunities this will provide is not far away.

The Beerwah Village Shopping Centre is now showing its footprint behind the site fence.

The influx of workers in the town for the next year will be of great benefit to the local businesses which will also benefit the local residents.

The chamber has entered into a partnership with the Faculty of Arts and Business from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Fourth year students from Regional and Urban Planning will conduct a case study on opportunities in Beerwah. This case study is intended to provide a model of how infrastructure changes can change a community.

The students will look at the consequences of the closure of the rail crossing and what approach should be taken to maximise the new structure to develop the community.

This project will be undertaken in the second quarter of 2014 with a formal presentation back to the chamber in June. The report will provide support for the submission the chamber will be preparing to go to the state government on the SEQ Regional Plan.

The chamber’s Sunshine Coast Draft Plan review team devoted considerable time and resources to the presentation of a submission to council on the draft plan. The response from council to the submission was far from encouraging. The council prepared an economic development strategy for the whole of the sunshine coast; the response to the chambers submission reflects the lack of recognition of Glasshouse Country communities as an economic hub, with growth opportunities.

Each community has special attributes and assets. The common asset is the transport network which is under utilised. One of the strategies key goals is ‘household income levels above the State average’ and to do this you must maximise the use of the assets you have.

The chamber will be addressing the lack of vision to support the growth opportunities in Glasshouse Country to provide the necessary services you are entitled to, as well as the lifestyle and jobs, while retaining the special rural ambience we all enjoy.

Two wheels vs. four wheels

Many cyclist groups engage in criticism of car drivers and their lack of safe road behaviour.

I recently had an interesting experience on a long stretch of the Beerburrum-Woodford Road, where I arrived behind a group of about 15 cyclists in a 100km, double-lined section of road. They were three and four abreast in places, travelling under 60km per hour and blocking the lane completely.

The last two riders (who were also riding side-byside) noticed my car and began signalling me to go around them. I thought this was particularly interesting coming from a group who constantly bang on about road safety. I considered the risk to me (and indeed of the riders themselves) in illegally crossing over double lines with no visibility of the road ahead, and decided against it. The back riders moved to single file, still signalling for me to go round and seemed quite perplexed that I refused. The front riders, still spread across the road, were completely oblivious.

Why is the basic legal requirement not to hinder or impede the flow of traffic not applied to cyclists? Why is there not a law that cyclists are to ride single file on roads, particularly where there are double lines and no visibility? Am I expected to break the law and cross double lines to give cyclists the one metre safe distance, or do I just keep travelling at 40 km below the legal limit?

Political fact and fiction

Where oh where are all the old journalistic hardheads who can tell (and honestly report) the difference between political facts and fiction?

For more than six years (2000 plus days) we’ve had to endure mismanagement on a grand scale in Canberra, by Rudd/Gillard/Rudd Governments, marked by dramatic economic change, sliding from an economy in credit to a seemingly irreversible massive deficit.

There were the pink batts and school buildings rorts. The loss (almost entirely) of our national vehicle building industries via Mitsubishi, Ford, and now Holden and a massive 40 to 50 billion dollar blowout in the patently dishonest NBN scheme and on and on the list goes.

Now we find Tony Abbott and Co being blamed for much of this after 100 days in office! And the media, nationally, is tripping over itself to run ‘the story’ ad nauseum (and embellish the picture).

Whether you like Abbott and Co or not, any rational and reasonable thinking person would see the anti-Abbott campaign for what it is.

Or are we really so dumb (and suffering from memory loss) that we simply accept what is being ‘fed’ to us?

Forgotten people

With the new year one wonders if the ratepayers of the Sunshine Coast have become the forgotten people like the Federal Government has acknowledged for those that live here in this country.

I'm sure there were achievements by individual councillors but that's behind closed doors now.

It is very rare that a councillor makes a statement or media release about projects that they have enhanced or helped at all.

When the next elections come up, it will be like State and Federal because the faith we had for who we voted for has shown no ability to achieve anything. This is because we have no idea what they are doing on our behalf. If we agree or disagree we can talk to our local councillor for our area, but if we do that via council we never receive anything back through the local member, even if you send directly to that councillor.

I guess we are the forgotten ratepayers.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas I was shopping in Beerwah and on two of these occasions I saw two things that made me wonder why people do the things they do.

On one instance I was going to the Post Office and parked in Turner Street.

I was getting ready to get out of my car when a young woman pulled up near the Lifeline bins. She got her baby out of the car and opened the boot.

I thought she was going to put some stuff in the bin, but how wrong could I be?

In broad daylight with her baby in her arms she went over to the piles of stuff on the ground, kicked a pink garbage bag that looked to be full of stuffed toys, picked it up popped it in the boot and off she went. You know who you are, because I left a note on your car while you were in the lifeline store picking up another bargain.

The second incident was at the Woolies car park. I was at the bank when a car with personal number plates pulled up in the handicap parking right outside the bank. A woman and her able bodied teenage daughter got out and came into the bank. They had a ‘disabled’ sticker on the car. They were in the bank for a while, chatting about an overseas trip the woman was going on. Outside I saw a car circling the car park, wanting to use the disabled car space.

However the little old lady in that car had to park further away, she had two walking sticks and looked like she was in a lot of pain. So what’s the story with these disabled stickers? Are they meant to be used while the person with the disability is not in the car? Because it was obvious that neither of these two had anything wrong with them. They didn’t bat an eyelid when the old lady came into the bank with her two sticks; they just went back to the car and drove off.

What the hell is wrong with some people? Are these stickers policed in any way? I have a friend that has difficulty walking too far, she is 70 and she tried to get a sticker so she could park closer and was knocked back.

Is there anyone who keeps an eye out for people who don’t use the stickers correctly?

Re: Scary maths

K. Pullen was right to point out the potential in renewable energy to supply the world’s energy needs (GCNews December 17).

However he was very courageous to make the claim that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is not changing. Only about 40% of the additional CO2 produced by humans is absorbed by the oceans. The rest remains in the atmosphere, and thus atmospheric CO2 is at its highest level in 15 million years. A natural change of 100 ppm (parts per million) normally takes 5,000 to 20,000 years. The recent increase of 100 ppm has taken just 120 years.

And coincidentally, the Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed 2013 as Australia’s hottest year since records began in 1910.

Above average temperatures were unusually persistent throughout 2013, particularly between July and October. The unusual heat peaked in September when national mean temperatures were 2.7C above average, more than a degree above any previous September and further above average than any previous month in Australia’s climate history.

The temperatures of 2013, both in Australia and globally, are consistent with a long-term warming of 0.8 to 0.9 C over the last century, much of it in the last 50 years.

Dinosaurs on the coast

On Monday, January 20 night between 7.00pm and 9.00pm at the Maleny library, there is an event for the 13 – 18-year-olds who will be locked in the library, find the clues and complete the challenges to become The Hunter and save the world from the Zombie apocalypse. Egyptian family fun: Kids dig it

The Abbey Museum will be hosting Egyptian fun, games and activities for kids of all ages until January 24 at the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology for the school holidays.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the Museum’s unique collection of artefacts gathered from around the world, while children and the young at heart can participate in a wide variety of Egyptian-themed games and activities scattered throughout the museum.

Sleep apnoea is a serious medical condition that can increase your risk of heart failure, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure and decrease your life expectancy by eight to 10 years.

Sufferers have a high incidence of headaches, reflux, and may grind their teeth and feel tired and ‘cranky’ during the day.

Those with sleep apnoea, can spend 10 hours in bed, but get only one to two hours of ‘real sleep’. No-one can feel rested, or recover from any medical or health problem after that.

The most common cause of sleep apnoea is a blockage of the airway during breathing while asleep. This blockage may be due to excess weight, the epiglottis or the lower jaw. Sometimes dental treatment, which changes the position of the lower jaw, or a night guard, can stop you from suffering from sleep apnoea.

The ideal treatment from sleep apnoea will always be a CPAP machine. But not everyone wants to use one. Some lucky people will be in the group for whom repositioning the lower jaw will work.

The difficulty is to determine who is in that group without wasting money and risking your health by investing in an appliance, which will not work for you.

Beerwah couple Kaz and Matt have decided to open Soulqi Acupuncture and Massage Clinic in late January or early February at Shop 5, 68 Simpson Street, Beerwah (between First National Real Estate and Suncorp Bank).

Living BADYACC - Broadband for Seniors Last year Beerwah's BADYACC (Beerwah & District Youth And Community Centre) won support to offer the Australian Government Program :- ‘Broadband for Seniors’ during 2014.

The program aims to improve understanding of the internet and the services that run on the internet, especially for senior citizens.

What is BFS? BADYACC was funded to provide computer and internet access for those who have not yet used the internet, or have no access to the internet at home, and to improve the safety and security of computer users on the internet.

A Free Information Session will be held on Monday, January, 20 at 3.00pm, at BADYACC opposite the Beerwah Sports Ground, just past the overpass bridge.

The information session will look at the program, and assess the numbers interested, and therefore the timetable and days of availability.

A retired TAFE teacher, Bob Harper has volunteered to present the information, supervise computer use and help users who are not familiar with computers and the internet.

"You might be surprised at the techniques scammers use to infiltrate your computer, steal your information, and potentially create a false identity based on your information," Bob said.

BreastScreen Queensland is back in Beerwah While New Year resolutions of looking after health are fresh in the mind, women in the Beerwah area are encouraged to take advantage of the BreastScreen Queensland Mobile Service which will be located at the Beerwah Community Centre from January 21 to 23.

BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Debra Zammit said that when the BreastScreen Mobile Service was in Beerwah last November, they received an overwhelming response from local women.

“It was pleasing that so many women were keen to access the mobile screening service, however the demand was so high that we were unable to provide enough appointments at that time,” explained Ms Zammit.

“The good news is the Mobile Service is returning to Beerwah again this month. Any ladies who may have missed out last time will be able to access the service locally, rather than having to travel to find a quality service.”

Breast cancer impacts on more than two and a half thousand Queensland women and their families every year.

All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a

BreastScreen Queensland Service, and women aged 50 – 74 years are particularly encouraged to attend.

“The mobile van has the same state-of-the-art equipment as the permanent sites,” said Ms Zammit.

BreastScreen Queensland Services are the only nationally-accredited breast cancer screening services in Queensland.

Appointments are one-on-one with specially trained female health professionals and breastscreens are read independently by two doctors.

Ms Zammit said regular two yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a women or her doctor can feel anything.

“It is important to remember that nine out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease and it is vital that all women heed messages about the importance of having a regular breast screen,” she said.

Appointments are starting to fill so phone 13 20 50 to make an appointment or for further information. A doctor’s referral is not required.

Depending on the needs found, BADYACC expects to have the computers available on Mondays, Tuesdays, and maybe Wednesdays.

If very popular, further access will be considered.

Anybody can attend the information session, and other programs may eventuate from interest raised there. However the program itself is aimed at people who are eligible for a seniors card, i.e. Australian Seniors.

All through January, Beerwah Library will showcase art works by members of the Glasshouse Country Arts Trail. This month’s art features paintings and linoprints by Arts Trail members Cholena Hughes and Neville Field. Appropriately, the focus of these beautiful works is on aspects of the Glasshouse Mountains. The works invite you to take a look at the mountains from the artists’ perspective and to enjoy the changing faces of these 26 million year old volcanic remnants, which stand above the neighbouring farmland.

Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibrogargan and Ngungun all star in these works. Some are painted in acrylic and some in oil paint while others are represented in linoprint. Welcome to yet another wonderful new year of productive gardening.

We have had a fantastic feast from the garden throughout the festive season and masses of visitors to share it all with. The kids have even made themselves some pocket money selling off the excess through our wonderful local fruit barn.

‘What to plant now?’ is always a question I get asked. The combination of hot humid days with the imminent threat of torrential downpours in the summer season always proves to be difficult. You plant delicate little seeds and then watch them get pummelled out of the soil by the rain or you place your tender seedling into the ground and it gets sizzled in the sun.

So it is recommended that only the really hardy, sun-loving plants that survive our subtropical summer be considered for planting early in the year.

These include capsicum, sweet potato, cucumber, snake beans, eggplant, chilli, silverbeet, radish, corn, squash, tomatoes and zucchini.

Another chore on the ever growing ‘to do’ list, is to refresh the chook pen with new bedding material and a general clean out. The addition of 12 gorgeous chickens that hatched over Christmas has made this a bit of a priority. The material cleaned out will go directly into my compost mix to give it a real boost.

Finally, this year is looking to be an amazing year of producing for us on the farm with so many things happening. Along with the cattle, ginger, chooks, small crops and new enterprises, I am greatly looking forward to teaching Agricultural Science to the next generation and hopefully inspire more people to get involved and support our amazing agricultural industry.

These threshold days are an experience of awaiting what the year will bring as well as letting go of that which will be of no benefit to me trying to be a better person.

New Year's resolutions are as much about leaving behind unhelpful aspects of character as well as developing better and healthier approaches to life.

Among the significant events of 2013 was of course the death of Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected leader of South Africa, freedom fighter and Nobel Prize laureate who died at the age of 95. So much of his life's story is an inspiration to many people. As world leaders and former Presidents and Prime Ministers paid their tributes to this outstanding man, many referred to Mandela's positive approach to leadership and his desire to include former enemies in government as among his most outstanding qualities. It was Nelson Mandela's creed, as he reflected on his own 27 years of imprisonment, that if he or anyone else was motivated by vengeance, hate, or resentment then they were not truly free. Liberation from the pain and injustice of the past meant acknowledging the truth, acting with justice and then actively working towards reconciliation.

I'm sure it was not an easy attitude or ideal to put into practice and many of Mandela's own associates disagreed strongly with him. Yet this path to true freedom which requires the costly and constant work of forgiveness is now that for which Nelson Mandela is most remembered.

But Nelson Mandela is no solo pilgrim on this difficult and challenging journey. The attempt of one man to gain some peace of mind and heart after suffering horrific conditions as a prisoner of war walks this same path in the film ‘The Railwayman’.

And of course there is that fascinating journey into our own lives and hearts.

We are endeavouring to start up Thursday morning ‘Open Pairs’ once again on January 16, as well as the afternoon game. The morning game will commence at 9.00am with the afternoon game starting at 1.00pm, during the summer months.

Tibros mixed competition up and running

The Tibros's Netball club mixed competition will commence on Tuesday, January 21. Please note the change of day from Wednesday to Tuesday. This is a fun, social comp and can be enjoyed with even the most basic skills. Those

Beegees Soccer Club prepares for Season 2014 With a new and enthusiastic leadership team, supported by a skilled and experienced coaching group, the Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club is looking forward to and actively preparing for the 2014 soccer season.

Incoming Club President, Paul Hughes said that the Beegees were quietly confident about the upcoming 2014 season. “The Beegees have a proud history and this year we are really pleased with our coaching group with Shaun DeCourcy, a past senior Beegees and representative player and senior coach, returning to the club as premier men’s coach,” he said.

Paul also emphasised that a greater focus will be placed on the coaching and development of the younger players within the club over the next few years.

“We recognise the importance of our small-sided and junior competition players as the future of the club,” he said.

Shaun is also well known and respected within the Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club.

“This is where I learned the game, it is where I played most of my junior and senior soccer, and I am proud to return as the senior men’s coach,” said Shaun.

The club is looking to build the senior men’s team this year and Shaun is looking forward to working with new and returning players.

“The senior men’s team has already started training each Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30pm and any new player interested in joining the team is welcome to come along,” urged Shaun.

Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association With 19 individual clubs spanning geographically from Mooloolah to Noosa, and from Caloundra out to Montville, the Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association encourages players to develop their playing skills in a fun, friendly and safe alcohol and drug free environment.

Originally set up in the 1970’s to allow church followers to attend church on Sundays by offering games on Friday nights and Saturdays, the association started with just two age group teams - under 10’s and under 13’s with a total of 140 players throughout the region. Since then membership has grown to over 2600 junior and 350 senior players in 2013.

Association administrator Billie-Kay Kerle explains the SCCSA ethos as “being very family orientated where mums and dads can play on Friday nights and then come and watch the kids play on Saturdays.”

In 2014, SCCSA will celebrate their 40th anniversary year.

While special events are currently being planned, the year will highlight the anniversary celebrations under the banner of ‘past, present and future’.

Every year the association celebrates a different philosophy. Commitment and compassion were the values promoted in 2013, with donations given to charities and incentives rewarded to players who demonstrated ongoing dedication to weekly practice.

The SCCSA offers junior fixtures where both boys and girls up to the age of 17 can play on the same team. “We also encourage equal game time for all players – not just the elite players,” says Billie-Kay. “However, we do have a representative program for those players who want to extend themselves,” she adds.

The 2014 soccer sign on season will commence at the beginning of February. SCCSA will also offer the ‘Just for Kicks’ come and try days for children born between 2006 and 2009.

This allows parents to bring their children for a free hour and a half trial to try soccer and find out what it’s all about before they sign up. As a further incentive participants who sign up after the trial will receive a free bonus pack with shin pads and ball.
