What's Happening November 2018

Team GC&M News has been kept busy taking photos this past week at two very different events. Last Tuesday the girls frocked up and headed out to nearly all of the local venues hosting the year’s most glamorous event – the Melbourne Cup. We took so many lovely photos and have included two full pages in this edition. We have also created an expanded online edition to include additional images, which you can access from our Facebook page.

On Sunday Brownie and I headed out for Remembrance Day, which marked the centenary of the end of World War I. A number of events were held throughout the area to mark this important occasion. We have included a number of the photos taken at Maleny’s re-enactment of the 1918 Maleny Victory Parade and will include more coverage in our November 21 edition. By Greg Brown Last week federal Minister for Communications Mitch Fifield came to Glass House Mountains to listen to locals about their experiences with the NBN process and mobile phone reception problems.

And they didn’t disappoint, with around 60 vocal locals filling the Glass House Mountains hall at the invitation of local Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace, along with a swag of high-level executives from nbn, Telstra and Optus.

The frustration of residents would have been hard for the Minister to miss, with person after person rising to relay their exasperating experience with their internet, mobile phone reception or often both at once.

Minister Fifield listened respectfully and answered problems as best he could, even if that was the oftenrepeated response of it being the responsibility of a telco, the environment we live in or decisions of Labor from a decade ago. There was little submitting that the government’s policy approach may have been a contributing factor to the poor outcomes locally.

Most grievances aired by the audience related to the inadequacy of the technology and local infrastructure, leading to substandard internet access, speeds and reliability.

Many also lamented that customer service standards had fallen so low that problems experienced were often unresolved or the process of getting to talk to the right person was overly convoluted.

When asked what he intends to do with the feedback he was receiving, Minister Fifield stated that it will be acted on.

Maleny aquatic centre one step closer

By Lea Parkes Many Maleny locals would know that an aquatic centre was a dream and passion … some may say obsession … of late Joyce Newton, and now Sunshine Coast Council has taken another step to making it a reality.

As reported in last week’s GC&M News, a report went to last Thursday’s council meeting (November 8) on the proposed Maleny aquatic centre, which Joyce had for many years worked tirelessly to make happen for the Maleny community.

Council unanimously approved the report’s recommendations, as well as a supplementary item proposed by Cr Jenny McKay, to finally bed down an endorsed location for the aquatic centre on the Maleny Sports Park, within the complex known as the Maleny Precinct.

For a number of years, the aquatic centre push has been rendered powerless due partly to a lack of certainty as to its final location.

This latest council decision sees the endorsed location of the future aquatic centre within the land leased and managed by the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club (MDSRC), just below the Maleny Light Horse Museum.

As Maleny and surrounding districts does not currently meet the desired population level for the provision of a ‘District – minor aquatic centre’, council said it would not automatically fund any development in its short-term forward budgeting.

However, council did acknowledge that the decision opened the way for the community to focus on sourcing alternative funding streams.

Greg Williams, president of MDSRC, said that many years of hard work had been behind the momentous decision.

“This may only be the first step towards the realisation that Maleny will finally get the indoor aquatic centre we deserve, but a crucial one that opens the door to other levels of funding,” he said.

Now the site is secured, offers of help to fundraise have been flooding in.

“A community fund-raising effort, as was achieved under Joyce Newton and the community when the original pool was built in 1983, is on offer and will bolster the funds we source,” Greg said.

“The centre’s costs will again be staged.”

He explained that the original master plan for the precinct included an aquatic and fitness centre and several sites, including others on the precinct and in the district, had been investigated.

“None were suitable for a variety of reasons, but we always offered the land leased to MDSRC the only remaining flat land owned by council in Maleny and zoned for sport - back to council to serve the community’s needs.

“An indoor aquatic centre, with hydro pool, gym and learn to swim pool, addresses the real needs of our hinterland population.

“Maleny deserves the same access to aquatic facilities as anyone else on the Sunshine Coast, particularly our elderly residents who find it difficult and expensive to travel to off range facilities.

“No-one should be disadvantaged by distance, time and cost,” Greg said.

Following the council’s decision last Thursday, Kim Easton, chair of the Maleny and District Indoor Aquatic and Fitness Centre Steering Committee, said it was fantastic that after such a long struggle the land had finally been set aside for the future aquatic centre.

“I am confident that the Maleny community will get behind the individual projects and I expect work to get under way for the gym and the hydrotherapy pool within the next couple of years,” Kim said.

Cr Jenny McKay said it is the same fierce determination and community spirit that built the first pool in Maleny 35 years ago on the Maleny State School grounds for the youth of Maleny district that would be driving this second facility.

“This facility will ensure that all the community will have equitable access to enjoy,” Cr McKay said.

“Flippers off to those who fundraised to build the school pool, continued the dream over the decades and fundraising to maintain the facility, who are now still there to drive into this new challenge,” she said.

“I look forward to working closely with all of the local community groups who are so actively engaged in this project to see what possibilities might exist for funding from all three tiers of government,” he said.

Andrew Powell, said that after years of disappointments, setbacks and frustration the Sunshine Coast Council had made the right decision.

“It's testament to the tenacity of the members of the Maleny community who have fought so hard for this,” Mr Powell said.

“It saddens me to reflect that their champion, Joyce Newton, wasn't here to celebrate but I know she'll be celebrating in heaven and aside from screaming ‘about time’, she would also be expressing her heartfelt gratitude to Cr McKay. “Now let's just get the jolly thing built," he said.

Development intensifies in Mooloolah bedroom units, which in itself would house more than 100 residents.

Added to the residual 39 low density housing lots, this could see almost 200 new residents living within the single 7.795 hectare development area.

One issue that may go against the proposal is that the land is zoned as low density residential. With the retirement village covering 1.6 hectares and 50 units planned, the density falls outside what is allowed to be called ‘low’.

However, the developer doesn’t see this as a problem. The developer’s planning report suggests that they consider the proposal “… to be consistent with the purpose and overall outcomes specified for the Low Density Residential Zone”.

Indicative schematic plans of the over-50s village show a small pool, a bowling green, a putting green and a modest 230sqm recreation building.

The developer has argued that the material change of use application is code assessable rather than impact assessable. Code assessment reduces the level of detail the applicant needs to provide and prevents the local community from having a formal say in whether they agree or otherwise with the proposal.

An approved subdivision off King Road in Mooloolah could morph into an over-50s retirement village after a fresh planning application was lodged recently with Sunshine Coast Council.

The original 58 lot subdivision at 138 King Road was approved by council in November 2017 (REC17/0093) and would have added more than 100 new residents to Mooloolah.

But the latest plans from the developer – Grove Partners Pty Ltd – seeks permission to change a portion of the development from 19 low density (minimum 700sqm) housing blocks to a retirement complex with 50 two and three

Looking to the stars Stargazing is no longer just for boffins and hippies. It’s being touted as the next big thing in the international holiday sector.

Termed ‘astro-tourism’, people are flocking to places that offer spectacular cosmological sights, and Sunshine Coast councillor Jenny McKay wants us to get in on the action.

To this end, the division one councillor has requested, through a notified motion at last week’s council meeting, that the council’s chief executive officer investigate the possibility of setting up a ‘dark sky’ reserve in the western hinterland region through the International DarkSky Association (IDSA).

The IDSA’s award-winning International Dark Sky Places (IDSP) conservation program was founded in 2001 to encourage communities to preserve and protect dark sites in parks and protected areas around the world through responsible lighting polices and public education.

There are five levels of dark sky place classification, with more than 100 locations already approved and designated around the world.

Cr McKay thinks that the area encompassed by the Obi Obi Valley, Conondale and Maleny National Parks could be the perfect location to set up Australia’s only dark sky reserve (with the Warrumbungle National Park in NSW already approved as a dark sky park).

or private land with an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural, heritage and/or public enjoyment.

As a result of the popular and successful astronomy evenings at the Maleny golf course, with hundreds attending from as far as Brisbane, Cr McKay was approached by Dr Ken Wishaw of the Brisbane Astronomical Society about the concept of the dark sky reserve.

“The only other dark sky reserve in Australasia (Lake Tekapo, New Zealand) has seen a doubling of tourist visitors from 400,000 to 800,000 per annum in the five years since its designation as a dark sky reserve,” Cr McKay said.

“Given the development of the new runway at the Sunshine Coast Airport, the identified Obi Obi Valley and environs offer a rare resource and opportunity to visit some of the most accessible dark skies in Australia, particularly for the vast and rapidly expanding Asian eco-tourism market.

“A successful IDSA designation would provide the Sunshine Coast with international recognition of the region, focusing on the eco-tourism market and recognising the Sunshine Coast Council for excellence in stewardship of our region,” Cr McKay said.

The CEO is due to report back to council at the March 2019 meeting with the findings of the investigation.

Business News Mountains of experience

By Sonia Clark Family business Mountain Auto Electrics prides itself on spanning three generations of service to the local community. Originally established in 1986 by Alan Mountain, the business, which has operated at the same premises in Beerwah since then, has built a solid reputation based on great service and ‘old school’ knowledge that has been handed down from father to son.

Alan’s son Scott and his wife Min took over the business in 2004. Now their son Cody has recently qualified as an auto electrician and airconditioning specialist, cementing his role in the family business.

Min says that although she and Scott took over in 2004, Alan had remained involved with the business and long-term customers right up until the end of his life.

She says a number of Alan’s original customers have remained loyal - some for more than 32 years.

“Scott learnt everything from his dad and then has taken that knowledge and moved with the times by adding modern day advances in vehicle repairs, maintenance and modifications,” Min said.

“Cody has learnt the old repair ways from both his father and grandfather but will now bring his knowledge of new technology, online and computerised solutions to the business.”

As well as being a fully qualified auto electrician and air-conditioning specialist, Scott is also a fully qualified mechanic. With his years of experience, Scott has the skills and knowledge to fix just about any vehicle (cars, trucks, farm machinery) and can often mechanically rejuvenate older/ custom cars without the need to replace original parts with new alternatives.

Frankie J’s back in business this week Tuesday, November 13 is a lucky day for locals with Frankie J’s Pizza and Pasta in Glass House Mountains finally reopening its doors after closing in July when a car drove through the front of the building.

With severe structural damage delaying reconstruction work, it has taken owners Brian and Debbie (pictured) nearly four months to rebuild their store, but they are excited to be reopening.

Locals will be pleased to know that they will be selling the same great range of pizzas, pasta and gelato as well as daytime café options – you can even phone through your lunch orders to have it ready to pick up.

Brian and Debbie decided to revamp and change the dining room with new rustic custommade benches and tables, perfect for casual dining or enjoying a nice cold gelato.

They have been lucky enough to retain most of their old staff and Debbie says they are most excited about being able to be a part of the locals’ day once again.

“This day has been a long time coming,” Debbie said. “We’ve really missed the locals and all the friendly faces we were used to seeing every day.

“We are so excited to see everyone again.”

Big new dog kennel for Landsborough A facility that could house more than 300 dogs has been proposed for a property off the end of Amigh Road in Landsborough.

A material change of use development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council on behalf of Diamond Valley Kennels, a dog breeding operation currently based at Ratcliff Road, Mooloolah.

If successful, the 21 hectare property – which is officially known as 2312 Steve Irwin Way – will have a boarding kennel building housing a maximum of 200 dogs, as well as a breeding kennel with 100 rooms where female dogs will give birth and care for their puppy litters.

The plans for the development also show a cattery, but no details are given as to how many cats are expected to be kept in that facility.

Access will be off Steve Irwin Way in a shared accessway with the Big Kart Track.

The planning report says that all animal waste products will be treated and disposed of on-site and the buildings housing the animals will be constructed to include noise reduction qualities.

Although the development is within the water run-off zone into Ewen Maddock Dam – a major drinking water supply for the region – the report suggests that effluent disposal approach has been designed to ensure it avoids adverse impacts on the dam water quality.

Out & About Armistice centenary remembered locally

On Sunday, Maple Street Maleny came alive with the sights and sounds of the town’s Victory Parade held in November 1918. A re-enactment of the parade, co-ordinated by Chris Brooker from the Maleny RSL, brought together many local community groups and individuals to create a unique and heartfelt reminder of the town’s history.

The crowds who came to share in the historic festivities were drawn not just from Maleny but many of the surrounding townships.

Following the parade a Remembrance Day service was held at the Maleny RSL. Services were also held at the cenotaphs in Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Mapleton along with a special service at the Peachester Cemetery.

Please note photos of the Remembrance Day services will be included in the November 21 edition of GC&M News.

By Sonia Clark There must be something about our local area that inspires creativity.

Recently GC&M News caught up with Glass House Mountains local Matthew Mohr who displays a fair bit of creative talent with his quirky yet beautifully crafted recycled metal art. We thought we’d find out more about what inspires Matthew to create these unique pieces and what is involved.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

A: I have been a local in this area for over ten years now. I still work locally at the same place since I first moved here. I am also an auxiliary firie at the Beerwah Fire Station. We help to protect our local and surrounding areas and civilians. In my spare time I also enjoy making recycled metal art from all different kinds of metals. I find making sculptures helps me cope with any post-traumatic stress from the unfortunate incidents we as firefighters sometimes attend (car accidents, house fires, fatalities, etc).

Q: Some of your metal sculptures are incredibly intricate and would require a lot of practical skill to put together. Tell us about your trade experience.

A: I have been a welder for over 12 years now, which has definitely helped with making my sculptures.

I have only just started showing my art work to the public via my metal art Facebook page - Matthew James Metal Arts - as well as displaying them out the front of my house on Crittenden Road at Glass House Mountains.

Q: Where do you find all the metal elements from?

A: I get all my bits of scrap metal from farmers around the area donating scrap metal. Go-turf farm at Red Road are great people and are always letting me dig through their scrap bins.

Q: How long does each piece take to make?

A: Some of my sculptures like the great white shark and life-sized horses take up to 24 weeks to complete but the smaller ones can be made over the weekend - if we don't receive any fire calls throughout the weekend.

Q: What are your future plans for your art?

A: I am hoping to make a career out of my art work as well as staying in the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service. I would love to get some of my art displayed in my local and surrounding towns and I'm always interested in commission pieces. I have also made and donated a lot of my art work to several charities and local associations including ‘Give me five for kids’ and Beerwah and district RSL. 10

Community News New musical reveals astonishing true story ‘A Girl’s Guide to World War’ is a new musical set to debut at the Old Ambulance Station in Nambour later this month.

Written by Maleny couple Aleathea Monsour and Katy Forde, this musical reveals an incredible true story: during World War I when a group of women, not content to stay quiet and “keep the home fires burning”, decided to go to war.

Together, the women opened a hospital on the frontline, staffed entirely by women - doctors, ambulance drivers and even a commanding officer.

What followed was a year of adventure that changed their lives forever.

Monsour and Forde received Regional Arts Development funding to complete the script and music, and are now ready to premiere the musical on the Sunshine Coast.

“We are obsessed with this story,” Katy said. “Each woman who worked in that hospital was courageous, unforgettable … and a little bit eccentric!”

Composer Aleathea, who is also acting in the show, said she plays the part of Dr Agnes Bennett, an aloof doctor with a heart of gold.

“And we’re so lucky to have musical theatre legend Susie French in the role of the swearing, chain-smoking Dr Lilian Cooper, Queensland’s first female doctor,” Aleathea said “She went to the front line with her partner Miss Josephine Bedford. They were the 1916 version of a lesbian power couple,” she said.

For the musical’s debut, Monsour and Forde chose the Old Ambulance Station in Nambour as a fitting location, given how much ambulances featured in the story.

The musical features the award-winning all-girl blues band Vix and the Slick Chix, who help to bring this incredible story to life through Monsour’s powerful original music.

For something a little different, this year the Witta Recreational Club will host a New Year’s Eve art union instead of a bigger scaled New Year’s Eve event.

Although past events have been extremely successful, the committee decided to take the pressure off this year and concentrate efforts on selling tickets for an art union to be drawn on New Year’s Eve. With all proceeds supporting the Witta Recreational Club, the fundraiser will definitely be worth being ‘in it to win it’, with the major prize being a whopping $10,000!

The total prize pool will be $10,500, made up of the $10,000 first prize and ten $50 draws. The draw will be held on New Year’s Eve at the Witta Sportsground Clubhouse at about 8pm.

Tickets in the art union are $50 each and buyers do not have to be at the club on New Year’s Eve to win. The bar will be open and there will be limited food items available to buy for those wishing to make an evening of it.

Expansion of new markets The Mapleton Country Markets is celebrating its first year of operations and is looking forward to more regular markets next year.

The markets function as a not-for-profit fundraiser on behalf of the Mapleton Hall and Sportsground Trust thanks to the highly valued and appreciated work of a team of volunteers headed by the amazing Paula Wright. Paula and her team are aiming to make the markets a permanent feature of mountain life. The hall trustees are very grateful for all their efforts.

Community Groups Volunteers have a rattling day out

Each month volunteers at Maleny Visitors Information Centre participate in familiarisation tours to increase their knowledge of local attractions and accommodation.

During October the volunteers enjoyed their annual full day tour, which this year was a “rattling” great day at Gympie and then home via the Mary Valley on the Mary Valley Rattler.

The tour also included a visit to the Gympie Information Centre and the Woodworks Museum, which was very impressive.

The 26 volunteers also enjoyed a delicious lunch served at the beautifully restored historic Gympie Railway Station before their journey home. All volunteers were very grateful to Ann Robertson who organised this famil brilliantly.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association With Charne Turner Acting president of the Friends of Mary Cairncross Association (FMCA), Sue Morgan, has been formally elected as the new president at the association’s annual general meeting. Kerrie Leddin remains as treasurer and Helen Jackson will continue in a caretaker role as secretary. Spring and the recent rains have been good for the rainforest with many sightings of pademelons with joeys, and a few sightings of an echidna and a platypus exciting visitors. New growth and flowers on the vines and trees add to the spectacle.

Visitor numbers to the Education Centre have continued to rise, with monthly attendance ranging between 11,000 and 15,000 people coming from all parts of the world.

The current theme of ‘Life in cold blood’, an exhibition of our slippy, slimy and scaly friends, has been a hit with visitors, especially the live exhibits of great barred frog tadpoles, angled-headed dragons and land mullets inside the centre with occasional pythons, other snakes and several species of lizards showing off to lucky visitors outside. While this theme continues, there are many interesting features to explore in the centre for kids of all ages.

FMCA is always looking for new members. Come and join. Membership is just $10 a year.

Men’s breakfast with guest speaker

Men from across Glasshouse Country are invited to a friendly breakfast get-together to be held on Saturday, November 17 at 8am at Henry and Co Cafe, Cribb Street, Landsborough.

The morning will start with guest speaker, David Larkin, who was the 2016 Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year, followed by casual group discussion and ideas for continuing as a group.

This is the first gathering of the group. It comes after a recent community forum on men’s wellbeing and suicide prevention where participants said they wanted more opportunities for local men to connect.

The first cuppa is on the house courtesy of the Glasshouse Country LINC group (suicide prevention working group), with all ages and backgrounds welcome to attend.

This month we plan to tackle a mixed bag of jobs. We will weed the pathway to the rock holes, where the good rainfall in the past few months has produced a magnificent crop of common weeds.

The wind has dropped a few small trees across the path so we will get those out of the way. We have been talking about removing some of the old fencing in the reserve, so if we have time we may make a start on that as well. And of course, if the weather has been dry, we will water our latest plantings.

The Coochin Creek Bushland Group is part of the Sunshine Coast Nature Conservation Program.

All are welcome to join us. You can look forward to a good introduction to the good, bad and ugly of flora and fauna conservation in our area.

Participation is free and tea is provided during the working bee. Participants are advised to wear boots, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and sun hat, and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellant, will be supplied.

Masterpiece Dance recently held its concert at Venue 114 at Kawana, with a full house for each of the two performances.

Families and friends were entertained with acrobatics, ballet, jazz and more by performers from as young as three years old right through to high schoolaged students who enthusiastically performed on stage.

More than 240 students performed in 33 items, making this Masterpiece Dance’s biggest concert to date.

You Said It Dangerous corner

Around 8am on October 25 I drove up Poole Road moving into the right hand lane in preparation to turn right onto Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains.

While driving slowly to the corner of the intersecting roads, a truck turned left into Poole Road travelling across the left hand section of Poole Road and moved into the right lane where I was located.

I had to swerve suddenly into the lane meant for vehicles turning left and the truck barely missed me.

It was fortunate that the left lane was free of any vehicles attempting to turn left. Had that not been the case I would have been struck by the turning truck on my right which in turn would have pushed me into the vehicle on my left.

Since the road was split into two lanes at this location I have seen many near misses and I question the effectiveness and safety of this particular road strategy. I would recommend that the traffic engineers that approved this particular lane addition revisit the site and I would be happy to point out what went wrong in the hope that this situation could be rectified.

Parents – do you know where your teenage children were on Wednesday, October 31 (Halloween)? I hope that they weren’t some of the ones roaming Dana Close in Glass House Mountains. We had three eggs thrown at our house that exploded with a loud bang. The next morning, we discovered one had hit the roof, one the glass in the front door and the other on the garage door.

Fortunately, none did damage, only a lot of time and effort scrubbing the mess off. Others had people banging on their doors.

This evening is supposed to be a time of fun for parents and littlies – not a time for older children to go on a rampage. I would suggest in future that parents make sure they know where their children are.

Mr Gawith acknowledges there are possible problems with the use of glyphosate in his latest letter (GC&M News, October 31), shifting his approach.

What’s most interesting is his attack on the Samsel & Seneff (2015) reference regarding glyphosate and possible links to cancer or autism. He says the paper was “discredited" and I asked who did that.

No answer.

He also says Seneff, a computer scientist, "pays for her own papers" to be published and has "no friends" in the science community.

The paper was titled "Glyphosate, pathways to modern diseases’ and published in Surgical Neurology International in 2015. It’s one of four papers produced on the topic. It’s been cited 43 times in other papers on the same topic. Stephanie Seneff has a BSc in biophysics, a science MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

She’s published many science papers since 1990.

She began researching biology and medicine in 2011 writing a number of papers around chemicals and disease.

Who did discredit her? First it was Jerry Steiner, a Monsanto media executive, and the other main attack was from Keith Kloor, a former senior editor of Cosmos and seeming defender of Monsanto's reputation (now Monsanto/Bayer).

Many readers will not realise that there is a massive divide now amongst scientists on the issue of pesticides and herbicides.

There is a firm split in opinions but the science is catching up now on long-term effects of herbicides like Roundup (glyphosate).

Fortunately we now know Monsanto/Bayer employed a unit to discredit scientists who question Roundup's reputation and safety. That is now clear from the court case. There is an answer.

It was less than a week between when our dog got into difficulty on this part of the course and when we noticed that the problem has been rectified.

The renovation to make this a much safer course for dogs also looks fabulous as well as much safer.

My kelpie still insists on jumping onto the top of the structure but now he can do so safely. Thank you and all concerned for such a quick and great outcome.

We also notice that the Beerwah Dog Park has had some modifications as well. Once again thank you.

Re: Nuclear Energy

Mark McArdle’s article on nuclear energy raises a spectre that I had hoped never to see raised in Australia again. Earlier governments in their wisdom decided that Australia should be nuclear free, and the list of disasters in other countries and the costs in terms of human life and repair bills demonstrates clearly the wisdom of continuing to be nuclear free.

Mark mentions the Chernobyl and Three Mile Island disasters but ignores the recent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan that was as big as Chernobyl. The list of nuclear disasters around the world over the past 50 or so years is a very long one.

Just in the USA there have been 50 nuclear incidents that have cost almost $US8 billion. The number of people who have been killed or died from nuclear induced cancer is enormous.

Mark is ignoring the rapidly growing groundswell of energy, money and increasing jobs being devoted to building the renewable industry in this country.

A much wiser and cheaper alternative for the government would be to get behind the renewable power generation movement that people are choosing as their preferred option to lower power prices.

Supporting this movement would cost the government far less that setting up a nuclear industry and provide a safer alternative for us all.

The facts

Maleny is not getting a new pool. However desirable that would be, Maleny and district has nowhere near the population to be eligible for a pool under Sunshine Coast Council policy.

On November 8, and in line with this policy, council declined to fund an aquatic centre on the Maleny Precinct. Council nominally supported but refused to fund a ‘fitness village’ consisting not only of a pool but a splash pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a gym, a kiosk and parking for 98 cars.

Without funding, the prospects for such an expensive development are remote. The proposed site is on the upper part of the area on the Precinct leased to MDSRC, ie, excluding park-perfect Platypus Bend. It is a shame that the hydrotherapy pool could be a casualty.

A site elsewhere for this important asset to our community, a site already well equipped with water, power, access and parking, might well make it possible.

After all, we do at least have a pool. And a gym.

Melbourne Cup treat at Coochin Creek Co-op

This year’s ‘Coochin Creek Co-op Cup’ has been 12 months in the planning. Throughout the year as each staff member celebrated their birthday, they were presented with a ‘hobby horse’.

Over the course of 12 months there was an interesting stable of breeds and colours.

The big day was declared free dress day, this means uniforms weren’t required and most of the staff embraced this, some even dressed to match their horse’s colours or theme.

The day also included a buffet banquet lunch, office sweeps, trivia and a prize for best dressed.

However, the high point of the day was the running of the inaugural cup race.

The form guide was distributed by lunchtime and the race was on! With the start and finish line both in front of the doors of the Shell Shop, the horses and their jockeys ran around the shed.

With the cup day’s extreme heat it was not an easy run.

It was definitely enjoyed by spectators, some customers choosing to stay on to cheer from the sidelines, with just a few odd glances here and there.

Once the racers got their breath back, it was time to watch the real race on the tele and the winners of the sweeps were elated.

Rumour has it that some staff felt a little silly but apparently it was a whole lot fun to let our hair down and enjoy the afternoon with workmates.

For two decades, Joyce championed upgrading the aquatic facility for the Maleny and hinterland communities. When the report comes to council in November, I will asking councillors to support housing the new facility on the Maleny Community Precinct. The precinct is a wonderful place for this asset and I thank the many who have worked tirelessly with Joyce to bring this to fruition. I am sure I speak for many in saying that Joyce will be sadly missed.

Clearing on a road reserve Did you know a permit is required to clear vegetation on road reserves, footpaths and on the nature strip? With the right people doing this work, pedestrian and driver safety is maintained and potential damage to essential services is minimised. When it comes to trees, you’ll need an assessment before any work starts. Contact council, phone 5475 7272, about trees or vegetation on council-managed land that you are concerned about.

Check your tanks While we have been blessed with good rains, the long-term forecast still shows less than average rainfall for the remainder of the year.

I would encourage residents who rely on tank water to fill their tanks up before they run dry.

Last year some residents were without water until their water carrier could deliver to them.

Book a delivery with your water carrier before you run out.

Dusty roads update As summer gets closer, and our unsealed roads get dustier, I know many will be looking for my rural roads update.

Council is responsible for maintaining all rural roads to a safe standard, but you can partner with council to improve a road that does not carry a lot of traffic, or isn’t a through road, by contributing to the cost of a minimum seal.

They have now planted over 28,000 trees, removed many exotic and feral trees and weeds and transformed the property. I saw firsthand how well nature responded to their hard work. The ‘then and now’ photos show an incredible difference. Where there were empty paddocks, feral vegetation, landslip and erosion, there is now a forest of local species, with erosion and landslip controlled.

My congratulations go to the Lake Baroon Catchment Care Management Committee for winning the National Landcare Award for Excellent Sustainable Farm Practices at the National Landcare Conference – the only Queensland winner. What a great boost to our region.

These locals are Sunshine Coast heroes and without them the Coast would not be able to face the challenges of human impact through growth and natural elements.

Listening to you on hinterland telecommunications

I know how important mobile reception and good internet access is to local residents in the hinterland.

The government is making a difference in our community with, for example, federally funded new mobile black spot towers about to be constructed at Beerwah and Glass House Mountains and another already complete near Peachester.

However, I know that there is much more to be done, and that’s why I brought the federal Minister for Communications Mitch Fifield to Glasshouse Community Hall last Thursday.

More than 60 local residents gathered to give their feedback to the Minister and to ask their questions about the NBN and mobile reception in the region.

I also invited representatives of nbn, Telstra and Optus along to deal with any specific questions about individual properties, or problems residents have been having with their telco.

Thank you to everyone who was there for their passionate feedback.

We had a spirited discussion. It was clear that everyone who attended shared my commitment to getting the best possible infrastructure for the hinterland.

The Minister took away many issues and ideas that he will discuss with the CEOs of nbn and the telcos, and I know that the company representatives will already be assisting with many of the individual issues raised.

Commemorating Armistice in the hinterland

Last Sunday, November 11, we commemorated 100 years since the Armistice that ended World War I. I was privileged to have the opportunity to speak at a service at Maleny RSL on the day.

In recent weeks I have been proud to see a series of memorials dedicated across Fisher to the centenary of Armistice, funded by the Federal Government this year.

In Maleny this included a grant for the construction of a commemorative flagpole at TS Centaur.

This flagpole will allow the cadets to fly the Australian flag during their weekly colours ceremony and will be an important reminder of all the young sailors no older than our cadets who lost their lives during the Great War.

State Member for Glass House Door knocking in your area

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been busy door knocking in Mooloolah/ Diamond Valley and Beerwah. It was fantastic to meet so many of you. The most prominent issue raised with me was the level crossing in Mooloolah Valley. It’s a divisive issue, with many wanting it gone (especially after the freight train broke down in the middle of town last month) while others want it kept to maintain the “feel” of Mooloolah Valley. As it is a state issue, I will continue to monitor the planned upgrade of the North Coast Rail and keep the community informed of any planned changes.

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Upcoming road reseal works

Road reseal works are planned for North Maleny Road, Maleny from Tuesday, November 13 to Wednesday November 14, weather permitting. Restricted on-street parking will be in place between 7am-5pm. Works are also planned for Hunchy Road, Palmwoods from Wednesday, November 14 to Thursday, November 15, weather permitting. Restricted on-street parking will be in place between 7am5pm.

McGilchrist Road upgrade

The current upgrade to McGilchrist Road was affected by the wet weather in September and October. Some unfavourable ground conditions are also still being experienced and have delayed works. Additional resources have been assigned to the project to make up for these delays.

The first section between Ilkley Road and Slaughter Yard Road will open on November 19.

The section from Slaughter Yard Road north to the existing bitumen will then be closed to all traffic until just before Christmas, December 21. Traffic will be detoured via Eudlo and Palmwoods. The project is aiming for completion in February 2019. Council would like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience during the construction period.

Remembrance Day

November 11 was Remembrance Day. On this day 100 years ago World War I finally came to an end. We continue to honour our fallen diggers and it is a tradition that we as a community must never lose. This year the Maleny RSL Sub Branch hosted a fantastic re-enactment of the Victory Parade, which was followed by a ceremony at the town Cenotaph. The Maleny RSL Sub Branch is known for its fantastic re-enactments and they did not disappoint with this event that was 12 months in the making. Turtle season

Students are rolling out the welcome mat for turtles and I was proud to join 465 students at a massive beach clean-up event this week ahead of turtle nesting season. These wonderful students collected more than 170kg of rubbish and debris from beaches right across the coast in just one hour.

It’s great to see so many students taking part in this event and doing their best to protect our environment and our turtles. I urge everyone to be mindful when they are disposing of their rubbish.

Books4Kids Christmas

Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Salvation Army will once again join forces to promote literacy and spread the Christmas cheer to less fortunate children around the region. The program is now in its 18th year.

You can join in by simply buying a new children’s book and dropping it into any Sunshine Coast Library. You don’t even have to wrap it as the Salvation Army will look after those duties. The books will be distributed to less fortunate children and families by the Salvation Army through their Santa workshops at Maroochydore and Caloundra.

The drive begins on November 12 and will run until December 17.

Septuagenarian conquers 100km cycle challenge

Seventy-six-year-old Beerwah man, Roger Bonhomme, was determined to not only tick last month’s 100km Brisbane to Gold Coast (B2GC) Cycle Challenge off his bucket list, but to complete it in under six hours.

A regular bike rider until his mid-teens, Rogers’s passion for cycling was rekindled last year when given one of his son’s old mountain bikes for Christmas.

He built up distances on the bike and decided to take on the fast, flat and furious ride that is the B2GC, with some key goals in mind.

“My overall plan was to finish the ride, to do it non-stop and to complete the course in less than six hours,” he said.

“I have averaged about 12 to 14 km per hour on rough, gravel cycle trails so far, so I felt that 16 km per hour should be achievable on bitumen.

“I just about succeeded – my only stop was for a puncture coming into Hope Island - and at the finish line, my bike GPS showed I had taken six hours and one minute,” he said.

Roger admitted it was not an easy feat given the strong wind and rain on the day (Sunday, October 14).

“The event for a 76-year-old was tough – mentally and physically – because we had continuous drizzle, sudden heavy showers and a strong head wind,” Roger said.

so it was helpful that I had an ‘L’ plate stapled to my backpack, with the words ‘Mr Wobbly’ written on it,” he said.

Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage said Roger embodied the widespread appeal of bike riding, and encouraged people of all ages and abilities to get involved in cycling.

“Roger is living proof that you’re never too old to get back on a bike and relive your childhood,” she said.

“He’s an inspiration to so many others, demonstrating that age is no barrier to health and happiness. It is a great pathway to connecting with others and strengthening wellbeing.”

Almost 3,000 riders took over a traffic-free South East Busway for the B2GC, pedalling 100km to the Gold Coast.

There were a range of options available for riders of all ages and abilities, including a 60km ride starting at Logan, with all roads leading to live music and great food at the Gold Coast finish line.

This year, the B2GC Cycle Challenge teamed up with five charity partners to raise vital funds for physical and mental illness.

The Heart Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Breast Cancer Network Australia, Smiling for Smiddy and beyondblue were all official beneficiaries of the popular annual event.

Long road to retirement

Today plenty of people are working way past the traditional retirement age of 65 years and for one Beerwah local this was the age he started in his final career as a courtesy bus driver.

John Burrows took on the part-time job with Beerwah RSL 11 years ago.

When the club relocated to the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club, now Club Glass House, he continued in the role.

Over the years, John reckons he had talked about retiring at age 60, then 65, 70 and 75. Finally at age 76 he is calling it quits at the end of the year.

Club Glass House manager Sharon Bochow said that what had been great about employing someone from John’s generation is their strong work ethic and the pride they take in how they do their work.

“As a former mechanic, John has always gone the extra mile. For John the job hasn’t just been about driving the bus, but also about being responsible for keeping it in pristine condition and top working order,” she said.

Club regulars will have also seen John around the club collecting empty glasses, serving meals to tables and, apparently, he is also a pretty good at washing up.

Co-worker Sonya Bowen reckons that John loves a chat and has plenty of stories to share and that his passengers enjoy John’s friendliness as well as his “very cheery” shirts.

While John works five shifts and around 20 hours a week, he clearly enjoys the job and loves being a part of the Club Glass House team, which he describes as the most harmonious workplace he has ever been a part of.

While John expects he will miss the social side of the job, he is happy with his decision and is looking forward to having more time to pursue his hobbies and finish some of his projects at home.

John is a big believer that keeping your mind active is what keeps you young, but he reckons he will also find the time to come to the club and enjoy being a patron.

Grandparents go back to school Contributed by Debbie Roberts Beerburrum State School students invited their grandparents and stand-in grandparents to join them at school recently.

They were treated to an afternoon tea of lemon curd slice, scrolls, muffins and quiche made and served by our year 6 leaders.

Then it was off to their grandchild's classroom to see where all the learning happens and to view some of their work.

They also joined in some art and craft activities, games and a tour of our kitchen garden, butterfly garden and dream table.

If you need a little harmless escapism in the form of wacky French comedy, Lost in Paris could be for you. Fiona, a small town librarian in Canada, rushes to Paris after receiving an SOS from her elderly Aunt Martha, elegantly played by 89-year-old Emmanuelle Riva (Amour, Hiroshima Mon Amour) in what was to be her last film before her death in 2017.

On Fiona's arrival in Paris, the venerable aunt seems to have disappeared and in the quest to find her we are treated to a fast-paced succession of visually stylish sight gags involving hilarious physical comedy and hijinks.

But don't be fooled! Beneath the light-heartedness lies a level of sophistication we have come to expect from classic French entertainment.

Interestingly, the film is written, directed and co-produced by a real-life couple Fiona Gordon (who plays the librarian Fiona) and Dominique Abel (who plays the annoyingly persistent tramp Dom). Mostly in English with some sub-titles.

Tracey Peck from Razorback Barber has been tidying up the fellas of Australia for more than 35 years.

Tracey was originally given the nickname ‘Razorback’ as a young apprentice and opened her first Razorback Barber shop in 1993. After following other interests for the past five years, Tracey was recently compelled to return to barbering when the opportunity arose to take over the lease of a shop previously managed by a friend. On learning that the shop was located near Razorback Road, Tracey took this as a sign to reconnect with her original passion of barbering.

Help! There's something wrong with my lilly pilly. Do you have any idea what's happening to it?

We have a beautiful lilly pilly ‘Cascade’ in our front garden that is a few years old. A few months ago all of the leaves on one of the branches dried up and died. There was no evidence of any damage to the branch or any insect attack or infection. Soon afterwards, another branch did the same thing. Gradually, more and more branches are being affected and dying off, mostly lower branches, though in a random order. It seems to start with a few leaves on a branch and then spreads. The rest of the tree appears healthy, it has lots of new growth and is currently covered in beautiful pink pom-pom flowers. None of the other lilly pillies in our yard, including another of this variety, are affected.

Lilly pilly ‘Cascade’ (Syzygium luehmannii x Syzygium wilsonii) is a great choice for a garden. The bunches of soft pink fluffy flowers are attractive and a magnet for bees so you’ve chosen well … and yours has certainly grown well in just a couple of years.

And this may (or may not) have something to do with the dieback you're seeing.

I don’t think it’s a symptom of anything wrong with the plant.

Cascade is a fast grower but tends to grow as a large spreading and weeping shrub, so having it grow as a tall, almost standard bush is unusual.

The lower limb dieback may be a response to the plant growing up and so putting energy into the top and diverting its energy away from the lower branches.

One other possibility is waterlogging. Cascade doesn’t like to have its roots in wet soil for extended periods and it’s a chance that the recent rains have caused some roots to die off or become infected with a root rot disease. This often results in branches or one whole side of a plant dying off. But yours seems to be in a location that wouldn’t stay soppy for long periods.

In general (and not specific to yours), other reasons why this species could do poorly include: • damage to the roots by digging (either a person or an animal) • increased soil compaction, which excludes oxygen from around the roots • whipper snipper damage to the trunk • feeding with a high phosphorus fertiliser • salt or salty water going onto the ground – eg, from a parked fishing dingy or even washing water from the house as it can have a high alkaline salt content • damage from spray drift when using a herbicide nearby • reflection of the sun from something like a window, new shiny shed or a car windscreen, which can burn the leaves • pests such as psyllids, borers and scale can cause problems • myrtle rust – a newly arrived exotic fungal disease of native plants– is a significant threat to any plant from the Myrtaceae family group, such as lilly pilly, myrtle, tea tree, bottlebrush, watergum and many others. It shows up as leaf spots that turn egg-yolk yellow. It is a serious pathogen and should be looked out for. Sunshine Coast Council has an info page on its website.

In the meantime, try watering the area with a seaweed solution once a week week to boost the root vigour.

Noticeboard The gift of literacy for Christmas

As a part of Sunshine Coast Libraries Christmas celebrations, the annual Books4Kids Christmas book drive will begin on November 12 and continue until December 17.

Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Salvation Army will once again join forces to promote literacy and spread Christmas cheer to less fortunate children around the region.

The program is now in its 18th year and helping out is easy.

You simply buy a new children’s book and drop it into any Sunshine Coast Library. You don’t even have to wrap it as the Salvation Army will look after those duties.

The books will be distributed to less fortunate children and families by the Salvation Army through their Santa workshops at Maroochydore and Caloundra.

My family and I have been in the Glasshouse Country region for 12 years now and really love it.

It has great people, beautiful scenery and the semirural environment that we love.

However, over the past five years or so my wife and I have noticed that there are so many more people living here now, the roads are busier, the carparks are fuller and houses are popping up all over the place.

All this change has led to me getting a little anxious that the tight-knit community feel that I knew and loved when we first moved here might be disappearing.

In life, change is something that occurs all around us. Some of the change is good; some of the change is not so good. We will have seasons in our lives where we feel positive, healthy, connected; then we might also have seasons when we feel our health is struggling, we feel alone and dealing with challenges.

Christmas cakes for a cause

The Lions Club of Maleny and Blackall Range will soon have its Christmas cakes and puddings, including individually iced and decorated Christmas cakes, appearing in businesses throughout Witta, Maleny, Montville and Mapleton.

Club president Chris Sang said the iced and decorated cakes had been lovingly crafted by the club’s many experts in cake decorating and would make excellent Christmas presents.

“We appreciate the businesses that generously offer to sell the cakes and puddings on behalf of Lions,” Chris said.

Prices are $17 for a large cake, $13 for small cakes and puddings, and $15 for the iced and decorated cakes.

All profits from the iced and decorated cakes will be donated to beyondblue, with profits from the cakes and puddings donated to local community projects.

Sport Glasshouse District Little Athletics Contributed by Renee Hackney On Saturday November 10, Glasshouse District Little Athletics members competed at the Suncoast regional relay competition, held in Noosa. This competition gives athletes the opportunity to work as a team, both in relay races and in field events. Our athletes showed amazing sportsmanship, competing at a very high level, and cheering on fellow athletes from both our own and other clubs. On the day we had more than 80 athletes participate, with many younger athletes competing in older age groups to complete teams. We even had a young athlete fill in a spot in a relay team for a rival club, which showed fantastic sportsmanship.

These kids did an amazing job in very hot and humid conditions and should all be very proud of their efforts both on and off the track. At the end of the day we had a large group of athletes make it through to the state relay competition in December, including Jordan Delacy who, as an U15, has been with our club for 11 years. Her hard work and perseverance has paid off and we are all so proud to see her go off to the state competition with her teammates.

Happy training to all the athletes going to the state relay and well done to all involved on the day.

Noelle Dean, Chris Dougan and Jack Timm defeated Joy Reason, Graham Meyers and Dennis Hume 21-15. Doug Sweedman, Lyn Griffiths and Tony Verdonk drew with Noelene Annakin, Lee Meyers and Bruce Angus 19 all.

Friday, November 9: The mixed club certified triples 6.30pm, round two, was another fantastic night of bowls under the lights with a big crowd watching on. Kerri Hazeltine, David Hayes and Paul Chirgwin defeated Brian Squires, Dick Coppa and Ann White 26-12. Jack Chirgwin (J), Viv James and Bill James defeated Marilyn Podmore, Brett Collinson and Grant Podmore 2717. Steve Joliffe, Chris Dougan and Jimmy Tatum defeated Jeffrey Parkes (J), Everret Evans (J), and Rae Farrell 26-12. Finally, in a ripper of a game, Brendan Freshwater, Chris Freshwater and

As our golfing year winds down we held our final men's invitation day for 2018 on Thursday, November 8 and it was such a change in weather that we were actually cold at times after the previous extremely hot days! We had a pleasing field of 88 players for a two-person Ambrose and the winners were Geoff and Sue Williamson on 61 nett, first runners-up were Lorraine McCamley and Theron Carpenter on 63.75 followed by Robyn Ryan and Russ Tillyard on 65. NTPs: 2 - G and S Williamson, 5 - J Williams and K Kemp, 16 - R and L Garner and 18 - D Flint and J Downes. BRD went to 72.25 nett.

Sunday, November 11 was Remembrance Day and was a great afternoon with our Diggers vs Civvies game. It kicked off at 1pm with 27 players. This year the Civvies were far too good winning 92-43. Thanks to Jimmy Tatum, Jan Lawson and Rod Platt who presented the trophy.

Saturday social bowls is back again this week with a 9am start.

By Richard Owen Maleny Golf Club has appointed highly experienced performance coach and former elite tour player Wayne Perske as its new golf club manager and professional.

President Dr Max Whitten said Wayne would bring to the club a wealth of experience and knowledge gained over 30 years in the golf industry as a touring professional, performance coach and member liaison manager.

“Wayne understands the growth and prosperity of Maleny Golf Club are our prime focus and he intends working with businesses locally and regionally to expand sponsorship opportunities and do all he can to increase visitation to our club,” Dr Whitten said.

Wayne will start work at the club on Monday, December 3 ahead of the Live Life Group PGA Legends Pro-Am being held at the club on Saturday, December 15 when a field of more than 50 professionals will compete for a $15,000 purse.

“I’m very excited to be heading back up the hill to Maleny and looking forward to meeting all the members and visitors at the beautiful

Maleny Golf Club,” Wayne told his many Facebook followers.

“Maleny is a unique and beautiful place and the golf club suits the area perfectly so if you have yet to experience Maleny Golf Club, do yourself a favour and book your round as soon as possible!”

Wayne is a full vocational member of the PGA, was an international tour winner, an Australian tour winner, an Australian and Queensland representative and three-time Queensland amateur of the year.

With certification in advanced coaching, Wayne is passionate about growing the game of golf especially membership growth, ladies golf and junior development.

Wayne, wife Vanessa and their two children plan to become very invested in the Maleny community. Vanessa, also a keen golfer, is a local artist and business woman.

Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker The November tournament was completed on Sunday, November 4 with 24 players competing from clubs as far away as Bundaberg and Windsor.

Conditions were good throughout, though a trifle hot, for the fourth division players where Priscilla Vickers from Maleny finished ahead of Judy Starr of the Nambour club. Priscilla won the club fourth division championship last week and is showing some fine form. Also of note in this round was Sally Adams posting a break of three.

Saturday, November 3 saw fierce competition in third division with Sarah Widin of Maleny, who was undefeated in her block, losing in the final to Gordon Cooper of Bundaberg.

Second division on Friday, November 2 was dominated by Donna Manning of Maleny who won all the games in her block and then went on to defeat Nick Cram, also of Maleny, in their final.

The first division was won by Ted Singleton, patron of our club, from Caloundra, ahead of Leigh Harvey from Headland Buderim club.

Games in this section were of a particularly high standard with Leigh coming from the dead to nearly complete a quadruple peel, which he was forced to do in order to overtake Donna in their individual game.

All competitors showed good sportsmanship and a pleasant playing environment is a credit to the many helpers and officials from the club who ran the event. Special thanks go to Vince and Val Carbery who refereed for the bulk of the tournament.

Lessons for beginners are held on Saturdays at 8 am on the courts in the showgrounds.
