Hi Everyone

W

elcome to GCNews for 2015, I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas and New Year celebrations and are looking forward to the year ahead.

We had a fabulous holiday in Tasmania and I have to say there is nothing like spending time somewhere else to remind you just what a great place we live in, although I do have to say the Tasmanian summer weather is quite appealing! (But I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to stand the winter time, I think of Maleny being cold but I think Tassie residents might do it a bit tougher).

One of my favourite activities, like all good tourists to an area, was that we made sure we ate plenty of local produce, and as Hobart is where Cadbury makes all their family size chocolate blocks, I did feel compelled to support that aspect of their local economy.

However what I really love is the diversity of the landscape, and the range of activities you can do in Tasmania, and we covered quite a lot of them with our holiday ‘seize the day attitude’. Now we just have to work out how to incorporate that into our day-to-day lives in 2015!

Beerwah and Glass House NBN Towers information meeting Contributed by Richard Giles The Maleny and District NBN Tower Action Groups are preparing for the next two months when NBN will come back to the town with word of landowners who have signed up to put a microwave tower on their land.

After those development applications have gone into council, concerned citizens and adjacent owners will have only 10 working days to object.

Currently NBN's campaign is moving onto Beerwah and Glass House towns to look at placing towers in the surrounding district.

As there is so much information to be gathered and so little given out by NBN, Maleny organisers are prepared to assist people in Beerwah, Glass House and Landsborough areas get started on their campaign. All people who have concerns about the placement of these microwave towers anywhere in their vicinity, or near children's schools or housing areas, can meet to be prepared for the NBN pressure campaign.

Maleny residents have been assisted by other tower action groups and have developed a pool of information on how NBN works, how it seeks out landowners, and how they convince people to place towers on local properties. This information is available for sharing.

It is recommended that locals in the Beerwah

district should meet to develop a locally based campaign to develop those skills to deal with NBN and with the council.

A meeting should be held in Beerwah, at a venue like the CWA Hall, to discuss the issues and inform locals. This can be at a time suitable to the local people.

The long arm of the Environment Levy

Two confirmed sightings of a bird so rare it has never been photographed, acquisition of four new reserves, thousands of native plants in the ground and delivery of an extensive community support program are just some of the highlights from the Environment Levy Annual Report 2013-14.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said in one year, council purchased four new environmental reserves totalling 398 hectares conserving them for future generations.

"That represents nearly 15% of environmental land acquired since the Levy was introduced in the early 1990s.

“The Levy also provided $384,000 in landholder environment grants and $454,000 on coastal rehabilitation—the list goes on.

“We want to share those achievements with the community who have made them possible – it’s their Environment Levy. That’s why for the first time, they’ll find the report in cafes, waiting rooms, service centres – the places our residents actually visit.

“We’ve recently had two confirmed sightings of the Coxen’s fig-parrot. This bird is endangered and one of the smallest and least known Australian parrots.

“In 2000 it was estimated there were less than 100 mature individuals left.

“Finds like this really show the Environment Levy in action.

New Year, New Plan?

Steve Irwin Way Forest under threat The Save Steve Irwin Way Forest group believe that the proposed Caloundra Road Interchange and realignment of Steve Irwin Way needs a major redesign.

Their current proposed plan will destroy 24 hectares of endangered forest and koala habitat, as well as cutting off direct highway access to local businesses. It will also prove to be a waste of taxpayer’s money because of its inefficient design.

According to TMR (Transport and Main Roads Dept), land belonging to Mooloolah Cemetery will be resumed.

Local business owners have stated that this inefficient and costly new design would be the end of their business and cost many jobs for local residents.

An alternative design exists that saves money, saves trees, saves koalas, and keeps the highway open for local businesses.

Come along to a family-friendly event on Saturday, January 24, to connect with what this area has to offer. It is being held at Daisy’s Place from 1.00pm.

The event will start with a Welcome to Country with local Gubbi Gubbi traditional owner, Lyndon Davis. Ecological speakers, business speakers, and local state candidates will give their views; aboriginal elders will be present; and food and music will be available.

Children’s activities will include face-painting, arts and craft, hula-hooping and juggling.

Men’s Shed embraces community spirit Contributed by Bob McLean The Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed has been kept busy as they finished off a big year in 2014 with the transition to their new base located at Glasshouse Country Care. They undertook a number of collaborative community projects including new brightly painted picnic tables for the Beerwah Aquatic Centre and possum / micro bat houses with the local cubs.

A request was made by the Glass House Mountains Cubs, for assistance with making kits for the construction of wooden possum / micro bat / or bird houses, suitable for the Cubs (aged eight - 10) to work on in groups.

It was decided that possum boxes would be the project. The men came up with a design that was suitable and then set about gathering and preparing the recycled timber for the boxes.

The kits were packaged up in early September ready for the cubs to assemble, weatherproof, and install for the local possums to make their new homes at the Rocky Creek Camp.

Things were a bit crowded at times in the new shed, while whips were being platted, leather belts being made, petrol engines being repaired and cups of tea and coffee to be had while friendships were being developed.

Don and Michel cooking The men took some time off at their last gathering to sit around, sizzle a few snags, have a yarn, welcome some visitors and yarn about the plans for 2015.

Community grants benefiting Division 1

NEW YEAR

Sunshine Coast Council has endorsed more than $415,000 in community grants to support a range of exciting projects which will benefit communities across the region including a number set to take place within Division 1.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said he was pleased council was able to assist such a diversity of local community groups in the latest funding round.

“From Men’s Shed to sporting associations, seven groups from Division 1 will receive more than $40,000 from council’s Community Grants Program,” Cr Baberowski said.

“I know that these funds are very much appreciated by our community groups and will make a big difference in our communities.”

A snapshot of other exciting projects awarded funding in Division 1 include: • Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association Inc - $7,500.00 for improved sports field drainage • Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed Inc - $4,991.00 for a community garden • Rotary Club of Caloundra Inc - $5,000.00 for a youth driver awareness program • IFYS Ltd - $15,000.00 for Re@l Art • Beerwah Grafx U3A Group - $3,499.00 for laptop for teaching photo and video editing • Glasshouse and Districts Little Athletics Centre Inc - $5,819.00 for a food preparation bench • Glasshouse Mountains Touch Football Association - $4,000.00 for completion line marking.

The next major grant round will open on February 1 and close on March 16.

Applicants can apply for projects up to $30,000. Council officers can assist with the application process, technical queries, project development, grant writing tips and advice on other funding sources outside council.

Somebody recently asked me what my New Year’s resolution is.

The truth is that I’ve never really been a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. Why do we have to wait until the new year to change our habits or resolve to try something different?

It seems the majority of us do however set New Year’s resolutions, so here is how to have the best shot at succeeding.

Be “S.M.A.R.T” when setting your goals.

S – Specific M – Measurable A – Achievable R – Realistic T – Timely Having a resolution to win lotto is definitely not a s.m.a.r.t goal as nice as it would be if it was achieved!

Resolving to lose weight is also not a s.m.a.r.t goal.

Community News Join the Beerwah Walkers in 2015

Contributed by Peter Dodwell Regular daily walking has long been recommended to help promote a healthy heart, and more recent brain research has also shown that walking can also reduce one's risk of dementia.

These are just two of the motivating factors that prompt the Beerwah Heart Foundation Walkers, under the leadership of Frank Cockram, to walk daily (Monday - Friday) for about 45 minutes.

“We have a repertoire of over 50 more-or-less local walks, mostly not strenuous, so there is enough variety and something for everybody,” said Peter.

Occasionally they may attempt something a bit more challenging, such as the walking track around Mt Tibrogargan, or a walk at Ewen Maddock Dam. One of the group’s older members, still going strong at 86, has clocked up over 800 kilometres last year.

“We would love to see more health-conscious people join our group, so phone Frank on 5494 0709 if you're interested, or turn up at the Beerwah Library car park at 6.15am where we meet before setting out for our morning's walk promptly at 6.30am,” he said.

Macadamia ‘nut-rage’ saga

The Australian macadamia industry is set to reap the benefits of the unfortunate Korean Airlines nut saga, with the resulting increased demand for Australian macadamias great news for our local nut growers.

The airline’s vice president of cabin service and daughter of the company's chairman Cho Hyun-ah, ordered a flight attendant off a December 5 flight from New York after she was served macadamia nuts in a bag instead of on a plate.

Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) CEO Jolyon Burnett said the reported surge in Korean demand for macadamias following the incident (the New York Times is reporting that macadamias are now a household name in South Korea, sales are booming and macadamias now represent 50% previously 5% - of total nut sales) is now flowing on to the Australian market.

Mr Burnett said that local processing companies are reporting an increased number of enquiries from Korea and the AMS has received increased international media interest.

New tennis courts a big hit The Landsborough Tennis Club is celebrating the opening of their new courts on January 17 from 9.00am until 12.00noon. It has been an extremely busy year planning and managing the project, but the outcome has been all worth it.

The courts look fantastic with plenty of bounce and speed for all players. The club partnered with the Sunshine Coast Council and Tennis Queensland and worked collaboratively to achieve this wonderful outcome. Mark McArdle MP, representing Minister Steve Dickson, will officially open the courts at 10.00am.

In 2014 the Tennis Club was a successful recipient of the Get in the Game Funding through NPRSR. With further assistance from councillor Rick Baberowski and the Sunshine Coast Council, and the club’s own development fund, the project kicked off.

The Queensland Government provided $100,000 to the Landsborough Tennis Club to revitalise the Landsborough tennis facilities to increase Queenslanders participation in sport and recreation activities.

Mick Blomer (Facility and Development Manager) from Tennis Queensland was appointed project manager and steered the project smoothly from start to finish. Premier Sports and Leisure were the contractors for developing the courts and have delivered a hugely professional outcome.

This has been an enormous entity and highlights when people are passionate and dedicated towards achieving outcomes that anything can be possible. As secretary for nearly five years it’s overwhelming to see the project finally completed after so many years of planning.

The tennis club has been operating for over 40 years with players sharing one bitumen court with the local basketball club in those days.

The committee are so grateful for the support from everyone over the last 12 months.

This is an exciting time for the sport of tennis as participation rates for 2014 across Queensland have topped all major sports including soccer.

As an affiliate club of Tennis Queensland the Landsborough Club is welcoming the support, and programs on offer include hot shots, cardio

tennis, tennis connect and other competitions.

We also have some fantastic opportunities for young players with our new coach Jani Kroyherr for 2015. We hope to see the community come along to our open day and support the club.

This is a wonderful asset to have in our community and we hope to see everyone enjoying and using the facility.

Smart Pup for Dillon

Contributed by Diane Hobson Lions Clubs from the Maleny Blackall Range, Beerwah, Woodford / Kilcoy and Sunshine Coast have joined together to donate $5,200.00 toward a Smart Pup for a young boy who has autism.

Smart Pups are trained to assist special needs children up to the age of 18 years.

Amazingly, the boy’s family has already raised $12,000 toward the $15,000 needed to start the training for Dillon’s dog.

The remainder of the donation will go to the Smart Pup organisation to assist with the cost of training the dog. Each dog guides the child through his or her daily routine and acts as a bridge between the child and the rest of the world.

The dogs attend school with the child and help toward reducing stress levels.

Smart Dogs help to improve children’s social and communication skills.

Walking around with a dog gives the child a natural chance to discuss something everyone is interested in - their special dog.

The children become more comfortable speaking to others as they get more practice talking about their pup in a variety of situations.

This social interaction often results in an increased vocabulary and decreased anxiety creating a social bridge for children who are often unsure as to how they should interact with their peers.

Studies show that children who have a special dog friend to accompany their daily routine feel less pressure from their surroundings and reduces anger and aggression.

This can also translate to improved sleeping habits, as many children with autism suffer from insomnia.

Funds to improve local environment

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, recently congratulated local community groups on the funds they will receive to undertake environmental projects locally.

Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group Inc received $24,000 to continue its work restoring and enhancing Obi Obi Creek on the Maleny plateau. Part of the work will involve removing weeds from Obi Obi creek, including Lantana, Blackberry, Camphor Laurel and Madeira vine, and planting Birdwing on the site.

Maleny-Blackall Range Lions Club Inc. received $75,470 to remove weeds such as Camphor Laurel, Lantana and Madeira vine along MalenyLandsborough Road and Obi Lane South.

“We recognise the valuable contributions of volunteers, who are true local heroes, rolling up their sleeves to improve their Madeira vine local area,” Andrew Powell said.

When Steve Moon and his mum Helen opened up the Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchants on Steve Irwin Way a few years ago, it was obvious that Steve loved creating a café with its own unique environment, and something just a little bit different to what was already available locally.

So when Steve told me about his plans for ‘Vianta’ that he planned to open in Simpson Street, I knew he would once again be creating something new and different for Beerwah.

The State election has been called and we’re off to the polling booths on Saturday, January 31.

In each of the editions before the election, GCNews will be offering each candidate the opportunity to give you some information on who they are and what they stand for (and why they think you should vote for them).

We cannot force the candidates to contribute but we will be giving them all the opportunity.

Readers of GCNews are generally within the electorates of Caloundra and Glass House. If you’re not sure what electorate you live within, you will be mailed information by the Electoral Commission Queensland.

But basically Caloundra includes Mooloolah, Glenview, part of Palmview, Landsborough and most of Beerwah.

Voting is compulsory, and penalties apply for those who don’t exercise their democratic right without a good excuse.

My two brothers and I grew up in Logan City where our mother worked nightshift in a nursing home to support the family.

With this starting point in life I understand the pressures in balancing the family budget, the value of hard work and the importance of access to quality public education and health services.

I’ve worked in the entertainment industry since leaving school, with some of the highlights being editor of Time Off magazine, a publicist at Channel 7 and State Manager for Sony.

Since 2008 Christina and I have run our own entertainment consultancy business from a small office in our home. Being a small business owner, I know first hand the significance of a state government that stands up for working people.

Now, at 48-years-of-age, I feel it’s time to give something back to our community and our state. My breadth of life experience, from a young man having the opportunity of tertiary education, through a career in the private sector, to owning and operating a small business in a rural region allows me to identify with the electorate of Glass House and its needs.

I’ve seen first hand the damaging effects that Campbell Newman’s harsh cuts and broken promises have had locally. I believe the residents of Glass House deserve a representative who will listen to their concerns and fight for our communities.

In my portfolio of Energy, ‘Strong Choices’ would use $3.4 billion to remove the cost of Solar Bonus Scheme from electricity bills.

We are planning for the future and all Queenslanders will share in it.

The Newman LNP Government’s plan will put Queensland on track to record the strongest growth of any state this year. But we cannot afford to take anything for granted.

I grew up in a small country town called Dalby on the Darling Downs.

I am running for The Greens because I want to see more diversity, greater transparency and stronger accountability in politics. I am passionate about our vision for a clean economy, a healthy environment and a more caring society.

Having lived on the Sunshine Coast for many years, I have enjoyed the diversity of the wonderful places within the seat of Glass House.

I love the natural environment in this electorate, our National Parks, the incredible bushwalking trails and rock climbing sites, our clean air and water and the rich agricultural land. These are some of our most important assets and as political representatives we have a responsibility to promote and protect this amazing part of the country.

I am the manager of a rapidly expanding social enterprise that develops community recycling solutions for e-waste, plastics and green waste. I am also completing a Bachelor of Laws at the University of the Sunshine Coast; I’m passionate about human rights, environmental justice, climate change, sustainability and conscious consumption.

I have an interest in social enterprises that match business solutions to social issues and believe that small and medium enterprises require greater support as they are the backbone of our local economies.

I am an ardent sports fan and enjoy playing and watching soccer and cricket. I am a referee for the Sunshine Coast’s premier women’s roller derby league, the Coastal Assassins, where I also bench coach their A-grade team. I am an avid reader and I enjoy writing poetry; my favourite author is Tim Winton.

Since March 2009 I have been humbled to serve the electorate of Glass House as their state parliamentarian. I am blessed to have the unwavering support of my wife and our five young children as I navigate my way through the rigours of being a Member of Parliament and more recently as a Minister in the Queensland Government.

In the nearly six years that have past, I have worked hard to deliver many positive outcomes across the diverse communities of this electorate. I believe I have also been a strong advocate for projects that are priorities for Glass House.

Before the LNP was elected in 2012, locals had been telling me that fixing up our local schools, revitalising frontline services, and tackling the cost of living were top priorities. As part of the strong LNP team, I’ve worked hard to address these, and the many other challenges, facing our communities in Glass House.

Locally, I have campaigned for the last six years to have traffic improvements made at the Reed Street intersection. Thanks to the community's support and efficiency in how the LNP have overseen road projects, I was delighted to announce late last year, that we had secured a funding commitment from Minister Emerson to see this project delivered in 2015.

Across the wider Glass House electorate, I’ve worked to ensure the repair and replacement of bridges and roads damaged by numerous floods. I have also worked to deliver more police at stations in Maleny, Woodford and Palmwoods and to see our schools receive much-needed funding and additional teaching support.

As part of a strong LNP team with a strong plan for our community, I’m committed to ensuring that local families in Glass House have a brighter future.

I have lived in Caloundra since 1973, attending Currimundi Primary School and Caloundra State High School, serving as School Captain in 1987. For the past 15 years I have been a custodial officer at Woodford Prison, the state’s largest high security correctional facility.

As a lifetime local, I understand the local issues affecting our community.

I have been campaigning and doorknocking for the past eight months and have had a chance to chat to many locals and local business owners in the electorate.

What I have heard disturbs me; many feel that the electorate has been taken for granted for far too long by successive LNP members. While our population has grown, our infrastructure and business community has been left behind. With one of the highest unemployment rates in Queensland it is time for a local member who will work for the community.

We also need quality affordable health care, better opportunities to live, work and relax in a safe and thriving community, and we must protect our environment no matter what, there must be no development at Halls Creek.

The LNP will ask Caloundra to help sell off public owned assets that pour literally millions of dollars a year into state coffers. If sold off you will see us join South Australia with the highest electricity prices in the world.

As a father, I am concerned about the sort of community I will be passing on to my son when he grows up, and yet it doesn’t have to be this way.

An economy can be nurtured and maintained without the slash and burn approach of the LNP. We can build a prosperous future for everyone and all we have to do is send a clear message to Mr Newman on 31 January.

It is time for a fresh start for Caloundra and if elected I will work hard as a local member for all the community.

Social justice and equality is extremely important to me. I am a part of the LGBTIQ community and the founding member of the Rainbow Network on the Sunshine Coast. I believe in equality wholeheartedly, for all people, from all races, religions, genders, and sexual identity.

Having spent many years working in the background, raising children and earning a living: I am now at the point where I feel this is no longer enough. I need to be doing a lot more – speaking out for all – and making a difference.

I believe that the Sunshine Coast region has a unique and vibrant lifestyle which the community values and wants preserved. Like all communities there are challenges that we face, but I believe the solutions to these problems are readily available and achievable. The Greens have a strong vision to deliver these solutions, to preserve and enhance the lifestyle we all enjoy. This is why I am proud to be standing for the Greens in Caloundra at the next state election.

The Greens' policies align perfectly with my own beliefs. I want to be part of the change for the better – something I believe we can achieve.

Both Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell are the same as the many politicians in the last 25 years, no money. Their income is $1000.00 a day, all they can come up with is there’s no money. We have got the wrong people in office. We have three major problems in the Glass House area.

1. We need traffic lights on the corner of Reed Street and Steve Irwin way, now not when someone dies.

2. Completion of Beerwah and Glass House footpath so our kids can ride to school in a safe manner. Two kilometres to go 10 years later?

3. Halls Creek has to be stopped; otherwise we lose too much green space. That will affect our water ways, our rainfall, bushland and wildlife.

75.6% increase in Electricity supply charges

Since January 2014 - January 2015 ‘ORIGIN’ have increased their supply charges by a whopping 75.6%, or 26% over July - October 2014, January - April 2014 $43.69, April - July 2014 $43.69, July - October 2014 $60.89, October - January 2015 $76.74.

The last increase puts the supply charges greater than the Qld Government electricity rebate for pensioners.

How does the Queensland Government expect to control electricity charges and sundries when they intend to sell / lease the asset to the private sector? It seems that the government can’t

control charges even when they own it.

Well Ministers what do you intend to do about these over the top charges?

Now don’t make rash promises.

Attention: trolley thieves

There are those in our community who walk home with all their grocery shopping still in the supermarket trolley. And the next time they go shopping, instead of returning the empty trolley, they walk home with another one... And the next time, another one… And another one.

Now you have left four Aldi trolleys, half a dozen Woolworths and half a dozen IGA supermarket trolleys at the end of your walk.

And just this week, I've noticed an IGA trolley dumped on the little bridge over Coochin Creek (end of Kellos Road reserve) and another one dumped beside the footpath near the Skate Park.

Most of the trolleys have been dumped in the little reserve at the end of Laurel Street (connecting with Mawhinney Street - beside the drive through).

This little reserve now looks a real eye-sore!

I wonder, did your mother ever teach you that to take something that doesn't belong to you is theft?

The Sunshine Coast Council has recently invested considerable funds into revamping the local Beerwah streetscape.

This helps the community feel proud about living in this beautiful township and area, and this should translate to people taking pride in keeping their streets and backyards and shared spaces neat and tidy - and picking up rubbish and reporting graffiti if and where it appears.

This I have done (and continue to do), and I hope that other concerned citizens are doing likewise.

Beerwah celebration group lives on

Following the wonderfully successful Beerwah Street Party, the organising group are now turning their sights toward future events. The group will be working closely with the Glass House Country Festival Committee, so we are sure to have some great celebrations to look forward to in 2015.

Servicing council’s customers

We are a big region and Council’s award winning customer contact staff can be an incredibly busy bunch. Last year, the team assisted a collective 250,000 customers—that’s an average of around 21,300 per month!

The average speed to answer calls was 31 seconds with 85.6% answered within 60 seconds. Customer satisfaction for customer contact officers was 4.62 out of 5 for telephone and online customer enquiries and 4.89 out of 5 for in person enquiries at the customer service counters. Let’s see if we can beat that in 2015.

I’m pleased to advise a number of local not-for-profit community groups have been successful in the latest minor round of council’s Community Grants Program. Here is a quick snapshot of a few of these local projects council is providing funding assistance towards: • Bunya Bunya Country Aboriginal Corporation ($1,940) - an Aboriginal heritage research project to find information relating to Kabi Kabi traditional owners in the Mooloolah area; • Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc ($2,000) – the Mooloolah Valley Community Garden Refurbishment; • Maleny Music and Performing Arts Inc ($2,000) - a new website and logo rebrand for the Maleny Music Weekend 2015; • Maleny Community Gym ($1,899) – a portable defibrillator for use during a possible cardiac emergency as well as a CPR training tool.

The next major round of Community Grants opens on February 2 and the minor round opens March 2. See council’s website for full details.

Glenview Road update

A heads up to local residents that design work is currently underway for the next stage of Glenview Road that will involve improvements and resealing to the west of the stage which was completed earlier this year. Meanwhile you’ll be pleased to know council will also soon be undertaking works for a grassed pathway so that people can safely walk off the road way.

Maleny changes pace

In the interest of community safety, new 50 km/h speed limit signs will soon be installed on Obi Lane. This has occurred as a result of local residents strongly lobbying for greater safety as more people are now visiting and enjoying the Maleny community precinct.

Acting on another safety concern, council has also arranged for the installation of wheel stops in the car park next to Willow Lane footpath in Maleny to prevent vehicles overhanging the footpath. www.gcnews.com.au

There may have been a few tears shed at the Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre on the corner of Page Street and Coonowrin Road last week, and not from the children.

As it is with mixed emotions that current Director Angela Hardey (who is heading off on maternity leave) handed over the reigns to her very capable colleague, Sam Lane.

Sam said the centre will continue to provide Ange Hardey and Sam Lane the current high level of care and education, and she is looking forward to working pro-actively with both parents and staff. “As Ange is heading off on maternity leave, the centre management and staff wish Ange well and look forward to seeing her later on in the year with her new baby,� Sam said.

Sam has been with the company for nearly 11 years, and brings with her a wealth of childcare knowledge and experience (17 years in total).

Having been a Director for nearly nine years, she truly understands the demands of the role, and is looking forward to rising to the challenge.

Both Ange and Sam agree that this transition could not have been made easily without their dedicated team of educators, plus the ongoing support of Head Office.

Sam is thrilled to be able to continue the strong message of the benefits of daily physical activities (coordinated by a personal trainer for the children, making it heaps of fun!), plus positive food choices with the Healthy Cooking Company. This company provides all the meals and snacks for the children, and has been developed by expert nutritionists. All meals are preservative free and with no added salt and sugar.

Sam is also happy to confirm she will continue on at the centre as Co-Director after Ange returns to work.

Bindi officially opens Bindi’s Island with a tropical party!

Lemurs swung from the treetops, giant Aldabran tortoises celebrated with hibiscus cake, as Bindi Irwin hosted the grand opening of ‘Bindi’s Island’ with a tropical themed party for special guests!

Local Federal member for Fisher, Mal Brough MP, who is a strong supporter of local tourism on the Sunshine Coast, was one of the guests who was also able to get up close with Bindi’s island friends including colourful Macaws, Boa constrictors, and even an Alligator snapping turtle.

The authentic jungle treehouse is based on Bindi’s treehouse in her childhood TV series, ‘Bindi the Jungle Girl’, and the film ‘Return to Nim’s Island’ – and its views of Lemur Island allow guests to see Vatobe, Betafo, Mandaby and their new friend all the way from Colchester Zoo in the UK, Stan, show off their cheeky and loveable personalities.

The new attraction received support from the Federal Government in the form of an $110,000 Tourism Grant for Bindi’s Island, allowing the Australia Zoo team to fulfil yet another one of Steve Irwin’s long-term dreams.

“I am so proud of the hard work that our Australia Zoo family put into creating Bindi's Island. It is truly amazing to see dad's dream come true, after he first breathed life into this project over 10 years ago,” said Bindi.

“I feel blessed beyond words to be able to experience the joy that the island brings to all those who visit Australia Zoo,” she added.

Mal said it was great to see another one of Steve's dreams realised.

Happenings Things 2 Do on Australia Day Australian Film Festival

What’s your family doing on Australia Day?

In 2015, the Maleny Film Society celebrates 22 years of regular screening of high quality films.

This year’s annual Australian Film Festival, over the Australia Day weekend (Friday and Saturday, January 23 and 24), promises a great program.

Three major feature films with stellar casts, plus three short films by student film-makers from Griffith University, which were chosen recently for screening in Cannes: Friday, January 23 at 7.15pm: Felony directed by Matthew Saville, a brooding thriller starring international actor Tim Wilkinson with Joel Edgerton and Melissa George - plus Ignition (about a 1970 beloved Kombi van called Betsy).

Saturday, January 24 at 3.00pm: The Infinite Man, a time travel comedyromance fresh from the Toronto Film Festival, acclaimed by critics for its unusual quirky script - plus The F-Word, which is about an unpredictable word starting with F. Saturday, January 24 at 7.15pm: Charlies Country directed by Rolf de Heer and starring David Gulpilil, the third part in a trilogy set in a far northern wilderness - plus Jack Rabbit, a tough story about domestic violence contrasted against the beauty of the Australian landscape.

Doors open at 6.00pm for a catered dinner prior to each evening session.

Doors open at 2.30pm for the afternoon matinee. Each screening features a drinks bar and tea and coffee stand, with home-made treats.

Members of the Maleny Film Society may make pre-bookings on-line or via the Maleny Information Centre. Memberships of the society are also available on-line. The festival venue is the recently renovated Maleny Community Centre in Maple Street. Festival passes are $35.00: individual sessions $13.00. Special rates for MFS members.

Why not drop by the Maleny Showgrounds – for a morning of community fun for all ages? Free jam-packed fun in Felicity Park If you are looking for a fun-filled day to entertain the whole family make sure you head to the idyllic Felicity Park, adjacent to Caloundra Regional Gallery, from 11.00am to 8.00pm on Saturday, January 17.

There is literally something for everyone! The free jam-packed day includes a range of arts and crafts for all ages. Children aged six to 12 years are invited to join local artist Kim Schoenberger at the dragons and dinosaurs clay workshop from 11.00am to 1.00pm. Twelve to 16-year-olds can join Kim from 2.00pm to 4.30pm and make their own sacred temple by transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

You can even unleash your eco-friendly fashion design talents and join artist Lindy Saunders and create some wearable art from 11.00am to 2.45pm.

Mike Turner Beerwah High School Chaplain I want to write a column about the New Year that is not cliche or cheesy... here goes...

Have you ever seen a good artist do a sketch or painting from start to finish in front of you? You get to witness something amazing unfold in front of your eyes that comes from their imagination and emotions. My sister's friend is very good at sketching and can draw faces with so much detail it blows your mind.

I want to use this analogy with 2015. It's the second week now but the year is still brand new.

We have our plans and commitments for the year, but we don't really know what the year will look like until we get to the other end - New Year’s Eve. We'll have successes, challenges, celebrations, good times, tears, worries and possibly things we'll be keen to forget, but how that will all look at the end of the year we just don't know yet.

Sometimes January can be a difficult time when we contemplate the year ahead, we can sometimes feel anxious or even scared, depending on what is going on for us personally or financially.

I believe that we don't just exist to survive on our own. The bible says we were created and

Social bowls - Jae’s Place on Mooloolah Connection Road at Glenview, is keen to encourage locals to come along and join in the fun of a game of social bowls. They’ve established three permanent times which are weekly on Friday 2.30pm – 5.00pm (Pairs $20.00), then Sunday 9.00am – 1.00pm (men only includes barbecue breakfast and two games of bowls, $20.00 per player.)

are loved by God. He wants us to be safe, have healthy relationships, find fulfilment in our work and personal lives. Jeremiah 29:11 says ‘For I know the plans I have for you’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope’. I love this verse because I think it shows that even though life has its hardships that God is there with us. The trouble is we tend to go through life ignoring God, saying things like "I'll be right, I don't need God" or "I don't believe in God". Personally, I believe we all need God and if we were truly honest with ourselves and thought about it we'd agree that God is real.

Why else would many people in life-threatening situations automatically pray? I reckon we just choose to put God out of our minds and focus on our conveniences and busyness. God is a gentleman, he won't barge in on us, we need to ask him into our lives. If we allow God to be involved in our lives he can be like that awesome artist guiding us and helping us each day so that when we get to the end of each year we can look back and see an awesome piece of artwork.

At the moment 2015 is like a blank piece of paper. Maybe it is time to pray to God and then together you can start ‘sketching’.

You Said It My neighbour asked me, “where have all the Christmas Beetles gone?” It was a question I had not asked myself. Over the years I had noticed a decline in their numbers though hadn’t given it a second thought. She had a theory that some of the lawn grubs people killed were Scarab Beetles (affectionately known as Christmas Beetles). So I googled it. On first look, scientific papers do not note the cause, as enough research has not been done. When I googled what lawn grub killer targeted, and one of its victims is the Scarab Beetle larvae as they eat grass roots.

This coupled with the demise of native grasses and climate change seems the reason why they are not falling from the sky anymore.

I worked in an organisation with scientists who advised me how detrimental this pesticide is for waterways, I didn’t realise its impact on the humble Christmas Beetle.

Nostalgia aside, what is the role of this fat beetle in the ecosystem? A tasty snack for birds, some fish, turtles and goodness knows what else eats them. I don’t want to look up what Kookaburras, or Tawny Frogmouths or lizards eat – it stresses me to know their habitat and food sources are in decline.

When will the insanity around fighting nature for human vanity stop? I actually like a lawn with dandelion flowers and other insect attracting weeds because it supports biodiversity. I love seeing a lawn abuzz. I would also prefer dead spots and have Christmas Beetles to support nature.

My message to people using lawn grub killer, an easy win for nature is to stop this practice now.

I am a 49-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis, in an electric wheelchair. I live in Glass House Mountains in a home I currently own with my ex. I believe we're here for a good time, not a long time, so a sense of humour is a must.

Disability Services Queensland provide carers for me from 7.00pm until 10.30am which has been great but now I'm finding my good hand is weakening and I drop lots. I still don't require incarceration but if I were to share a house with a person or persons in a similar situation, we could combine carer hours to get what we need. There is currently a huge gap in accommodation options for people such as myself with many having no option but to live in aged care facilities. For a person such as myself with all my marbles still in place, and stubborn independence, I couldn't think of anything worse.

BeeGees Soccer Club prepares for 2015 This season BeeGees have a new Senior Men’s Coach.

Johnny Boyle has taken over from last season’s Senior Men’s Coach Shaun Decourcy, who has had to leave for personal reasons.

We would like to thank Shaun and his team of David Payne and Gavin Thistlethwaite for their efforts last season with limited squad numbers.

We saw some improvement from the previous season and we are confident that Johnny Boyle and his back room staff can improve us again this season, with the addition of a few players.

Johnny’s love of football began at a young age, and he’s looking forward to his new role with the club.

“I arrived in Australia from bonny Scotland in February 2003, married to Sharon, and have two sons, Gary and Tony,” said Johnny.

“Always been a football mad player and fan since I was born.

“When a serious condition hit me, I had to give
