Rallying for cancer research

TIME is running out to show your support and help the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee to secure a fair and workable deal from Sunshine Coast Council for its financial future.

To formalise what it has been doing for years, the management committee needs people to tell the council that activities such as caravan club rallies, motorcycle club rallies, Sunshine Coast Kennel Club, community barbeques, pony club events, fundraisers/charity events, volunteer events, charity sports days, carols by candlelight, rugby league club fundraising events, circuses, rodeos, trade shows, caravan/motor home shows, motor car shows and community movie events, are all things we want the committee to continue to provide as a vital part of our local social and economic community.

These events bring tourists and visitors to the area and give locals – young and old – entertainment and activities, and raise funds for local charities and causes.

The committee needs your help to let the council know that you support the committee members and their proposed activities.

All you need to do is send an email to beerwahsportsground@cprgroup.com.au saying you support the proposed uses and that they will benefit the whole community.

Ask everyone you know to do the same. Send messages to businesses, caravan groups, motorcycle clubs, car clubs and sporting organisations.

If there isn’t a strong show of support, the council could say that these types of events aren’t important to the local community and so the committee could lose the right to run them. The deadline for comments is this Friday, October 15.

By Jack Waters TWO local car enthusiasts will participate in the Mystery Box Rally in Rockhampton next month. The five-day event promises plenty of laughs and muchneeded funds for Cancer Council along the way.

This event isn’t anything out of the ordinary for father-daughter team Steve and Bronwyn Graves, who have been participating in the rallies since 2015 – raising around $40,000 in that time.

The Mystery Box Rally is run by the same group that hosts the Sh#tbox Rally. However, instead of using cars worth less than $1,000 participants in this event must use cars that are more than 25 years old.

Steve and Bronwyn’s team – Kiss our Gasses – has already raised $5,500 this year and their 1993 Ford Fairmont is painted up and ready to ride.

The rally will start and finish in Rockhampton, and they don’t have any idea what each day’s destination is until the morning of departure.

The 2020 Mystery Box Rally was cancelled last August due to COVID-19, postponed again in August this year and is now scheduled to take place in November, with only about 30 teams participating instead of the usual 200. No teams from down south will be able to participate.

Steve says he’s sure it will still be one hell of a rally.

“It’s a bit disappointing for the teams that will miss out but it will still be plenty of fun even with the reduced numbers,” he said.

Steve said it had been great to see his daughter Bronwyn get so involved, so much so that she had even done a couple of the rallies without him.

“I think Bronwyn was one of the youngest people to do the rally. She was on her P plates when she did her first one,” Steve said.

“There’s a lot of younger people doing the rally now and I’d like to think Bronwyn helped start that.”

WAM! Waste gets personal in Maleny WASTE Action Maleny (WAM!), a new initiative addressing the waste crisis at a community level, was formed following a recent community forum run by Maleny Forums and Maple Street Co-operative and supported by the Sunshine Coast Council.

WAM! convenor Yvonne Holmes said the group would host a number of events during National Recycling Week, November 8-14.

“We invite individuals, artists, farmers, activists, composters, organisations and businesses who want to share what they are doing to avoid, reduce, reuse, repair and (if we have to) recycle to take part during the week,” Yvonne said.

“We are all on a waste journey and we have come a long way.

“We encourage you to take your green to the next level. We simply want to do waste better.”

Interactive displays, film screenings, entertainment, educational activities and workshops, culminating in a plastic-free picnic in Maleny’s town centre will be held during Recycling Week.

“Waste is now personal. While the science is incomplete about how plastics affect humans and animals, it seems that microplastics are now small enough to breach the blood-brain barrier, and the chemicals in plastics have been linked to reproductive harm, obesity, organ stress and developmental delays,” Yvonne said.

“For the health of the planet and those we love, we simply have to do waste better.

“Let’s come together in November and share our stories, and inspire each other on how we can avoid, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle waste,” she said.

Coast’s largest infrastructure project finally complete

By Greg Brown LOCALS would be familiar with the construction and disruption on the Bruce Highway over the past few years.

From road closures at night, to detours and diversions, dust, tree clearing, noise and – at times – endless lines of trucks, the massive road works seemed to be an unending part of our lives.

However, after more than four years in the making, the Sunshine Coast’s largest ever infrastructure project is now complete.

The $932 million project at Palmview has seen the Bruce Highway upgraded to six lanes between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway, including major upgrades to both interchanges and a new two-way service road for local traffic between Steve Irwin Way and Tanawha Tourist Drive.

To mark the occasion, the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk recently performed the official opening, flanked by state Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey and federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace.

The project was jointly funded on an 80:20 basis with the Australian Government contributing $745.6 million and the Queensland Government providing $186.4 million.

This project is part of the 15-year Bruce Highway upgrade program – a $13 billion program of works to improve safety, flood resilience and capacity along the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns.

Ms Palaszczuk said the project created 680 jobs.

“The Sunshine Coast was already a growing community pre-COVID, which is why this upgrade was vital, but because of our strong health response it’s become even more popular,” she said.

“These projects will transform the Bruce Highway, getting locals home faster and giving tourists more time to enjoy their holidays on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Bailey said the Bruce Highway provided a vital link for our communities and was the lifeblood for travel across the state.

“This project is the first of several current major upgrades to the highway across the region,” he said.

“The project has provided a massive employment boost to the region with nearly four million hours worked and more than 7,000 people inducted to the site during construction.

“Queensland has achieved exceptional things throughout COVID-19, recovering more than 200,000 jobs and seeing more people choosing to call Queensland home than any other state in Australia.”

Mr Wallace said the Sunshine Coast was now seeing federal investment in infrastructure like never before.

“With enhanced safety and smoother traffic flows, this upgraded section of the Bruce is going to improve the Sunshine Coast experience for visitors, allow local businesses to move their staff and goods around the region faster and easier, and help Sunshine Coast

locals spend more time at home with their families,” he said.

“This project is a major boost for our community and, with more Commonwealth-supported upgrades already under way on the highway between the Coast and Brisbane, it is only the beginning for our region.”

New home almost ready for Maleny emergency services IT’S been a long time coming but the new multipurpose emergency services facility at Maleny is on track to be operational next month … all going well.

After many years of promises and waiting, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES), Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) and State Emergency Service (SES) will soon have a new purpose-built depot, offices and training facilities on the corner of Macadamia Drive and Dixon Avenue on the western side of Maleny, just up the road from the police station and Queensland Ambulance.

The new $5 million facility will bring an end to the annual SES and RFB routine of moving out of sheds at Maleny Showground for the Maleny Show.

The completion will come just in time for the upcoming storm season and the emergency callouts that this hectic time of year can bring.

A QFES spokesperson said the construction was progressing well.

“With practical completion anticipated in late October, operations are scheduled for late November and the official opening slated for December 9,” the spokesperson said.

“The facility will co-locate the auxiliary Fire and Rescue Service, Rural Fire Service and SES. “This fit-for-purpose facility will enable QFES to provide enhanced response services to the growing Maleny and Sunshine Coast hinterland community. community.”

IT hasn’t taken long for Australia Zoo’s new partnership with Crime Stoppers Queensland to come into effect, with a $1,000 reward on offer for information about a number of magpies intentionally poisoned in Redcliffe recently.

Up to 40 birds were poisoned by organophosphates, commonly used in fertiliser. The affected birds required immediate medical attention after they were found haemorrhaging and unable to stand or take flight.

Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital vet and hospital supervisor Dr Ludo Valenza, said the team treated 11 of the birds.

However, only six birds remained in their care as the rest sadly succumbed to their injuries.

“These birds were maliciously poisoned and presented to the Wildlife Hospital extremely unwell,” Dr Valenza said.

“Many of them were found deceased on site and several others were humanely euthanised because of the toxicity of the chemical substance.”

The magpies were found in an area where elderly residents are suspected to have been feeding them, leading to an unusually high number of natives birds in the one area.

Wildlife Warriors founder Terri Irwin urged anyone with information to come forward.

“If anybody is aware of the events that led to the poisoning of these magpies, please contact Crime Stoppers Queensland and help us bring justice to these beautiful and important birds,” she said.

Council supports Landsborough dog breeding business By Greg Brown DESPITE receiving more than 400,000 vehement objections pleading with it to refuse a new puppy breeding (and dog and cat boarding facility) in Landsborough, Sunshine Coast Council planning staff will present a tick of approval for the proposal at this Thursday’s council meeting.

The avalanche of emailed objections to the proposal was so large that council’s IT system blocked the majority, wrongly identifying the volume of emails as part of a malicious denial-ofservice cyberattack.

The application – made by existing dog breeding business Diamond Valley Kennels (DVK) – was first made in 2018, with DVK identifying the need to move from their existing Mooloolah property to a larger facility.

Their original plan was for a 200-dog boarding kennel plus a 60-dog breeding facility, and a cattery for 20 cats.

The access to the property, located between the end of Amigh Road in Landsborough and Steve Irwin Way, was identified off Steve Irwin Way in a shared accessway with the Big Kart Track.

With the development in a rural zone and potentially not strictly within planning scheme rules, the proposal triggered an impact assessment process, meaning a more vigorous evaluation process was required.

Initial concerns flagged by council officers resulted in amendments to the plans, with Diamond Valley Kennels agreeing to reduce the boarding kennel from 200 to 48 dogs but maintained the puppy production at the original 60 breeding bitches.

Council also flagged potential problems with the level of noise that may be generated by all those barking dogs, resulting in extra acoustic management infrastructure as well as operational limits.

These types of applications are normally assessed and approved or rejected by the council planning staff but due to the intense level of public scrutiny, the assessment unit recommended the decision be made by the council’s elected representatives.

Consequently, the first agenda item of the Thursday, October 14 ordinary meeting will decide the fate of the Landsborough dog breeding business.

At the outset of the report to council, the planning staff stated that their job was not to assess the ethics of the proposal, a stance that will no doubt infuriate the hundreds of thousands of objectors who called on council to take a moral stand on animal welfare grounds.

“Animal welfare concerns are not a relevant matter to the assessment because relevant matters must be related to town planning in some way,” the report states.

“They are also not a local government matter, being that animal welfare is regulated by the Queensland Government.

“Dog breeding licences are a responsibility of the Queensland Government through the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and not a local government matter, and therefore cannot be considered as part of this land use application process.”

The report also referenced the RSPCA, saying it was a “third party advice agency” and did not object to the proposal.

However, all is not lost for those against the proposal as the decision will still be voted on by the 11 community-elected representatives who form the Sunshine Coast Council.

The councillors generally vote on matters based on the advice of the professional council staff. However, they have the capacity to argue for or against a proposal based on their personal views and to exercise a conscience vote or a vote supporting community sentiment.

Such a circumstance would require only six votes against to result in a refusal of the application.

Financial support for local tourism operators TOURISM operators, both large and small, on the Sunshine Coast still facing significant financial hardship because of COVID travel restrictions and lockdowns will benefit from extra targeted financial support from the federal government in partnership with the Queensland Government.

Under the agreed package of $70 million, $30 million will target Queensland’s iconic tourism attractions, with the other $40 million to be used for a second round of grants to small, medium and large tourism and hospitality businesses that received an initial grant from the Tourism and Hospitality Sector Hardship Program.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the latest round of lockdowns and border closures had a devastating impact on tourism businesses on the Sunshine Coast.

“Though it was tough for everyone, a great many local tourism businesses were able to innovate, work hard and find a way through previous Queensland lockdowns,” Mr Wallace said.

Woolworths introduces quiet hour WOOLWORTHS stores in Beerwah and Maleny now offer a low-sensory quiet hour shopping experience every Tuesday from 10.30-11.30am. The quiet hour is designed to reduce anxiety and sensory stress for customers with specific needs.

During the hour the stores will make a range of temporary changes including turning off bakery ovens and chicken cooker buzzers, reducing the volume on store phones, registers and in-store music, and stopping all PA announcements (excluding emergencies).

Store entries will be cleared, roll cages will be removed from the shop floor and lighting will be reduced.

Following a successful trial in selected stores, quiet hour is being rolled out nationally. More than 750 stores nationwide already offer the initiative.

Woolworths Group manager Tabitha Millar said customers had told the company there was a need in the community for a low-sensory shopping experience in the area.

“So, we’re pleased to expand quiet hour to Woolworths Beerwah and Maleny,” Ms Millar said.

The low sensory initiative was developed in consultation with

disability service providers at Life Without Barriers (LWB).

LWB chief executive Claire Robbs said it gave people a way to do their shopping and increase their independence in an environment that was not stressful and overwhelming.

Hairdressers with Hearts making a difference A NEW training program rolling out across the region will equip local hair, beauty and massage professionals with the skills to recognise signs of domestic violence and elder abuse during their clients’ routine visits.

Up to 40 individuals across the four industries will now have the chance to complete an accredited online training program through the Hairdressers with Hearts organisation thanks to funding from Sunshine Coast Council.

The program received a huge push from the Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic Violence Maleny and Blackall Range group, which originally made the request to council after hosting a successful forum that included a guest speaker from Hairdressers with Hearts.

modules and took less than an hour to complete. It outlines ways to pick up on signs and start a conversation.

“Upon completion the trainee receives a certificate of completion, some resources for use in their salon/clinic such as water bottles and aprons, as well as a window sticker. They also receive Queenslandwide informational resources to use for referring clients to services for professional support,” Val said.

“Additionally, the hairdresser receives membership and accreditation through Hairdressers with Hearts and is able to add their name to an online list of accredited hairdressers.

“The Speak Up Now group will also be providing them with information of organisations around the Sunshine Coast who can provide people with more local advice and assistance,” Val said.

Ten local hairdressers, five barbers, one beautician and one massage therapist have registered for the online training with 11 of them already completing it.

Morgan Winter, owner of The Crooked Fringe hairdressing salon in Witta, and Kim Knight, owner of K & S Barbers in Maleny, were the first to complete the training.

Both Morgan and Kim said they now felt comfortable handling difficult conversations with their clients, something Val says has been the case with everyone who has completed the training so far.

“All the hairdressers, barbers and beauticians have told me that over the years they have seen a high number of clients who they believe were victims of either domestic violence or elder abuse,” Val said.

“They know their long-term clients and

boxing career, 22-year-old Beerwah boxer Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell will soon be fighting for the Australasian lightweight title.

Dana earned the honour after downing Townsville boxer Mark Snook for the Queensland lightweight title at the Redcliffe Leagues Club last Saturday, October 5, with a fourthround technical knockout in just his third professional fight.

Dana’s fight for the Australasian title will be held on October 23 when he will face undefeated Warwick boxer Jake Wyllie at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

Hinterland Boxing Club’s Stephen Pitt has been coaching Dana for almost a decade and isn’t surprised the young star has already reached such a high level.

Dana is currently signed by Tasman Fighters, the same promoters that used to boast former WBO welterweight world champion Jeff Horn.

Stephen said the upcoming title bout was the biggest fight either of them had been part of.

“The fight is going to be streamed live and all eyes will be on him. This is going to be his breakout fight,” Stephen said.

“This is going to be a step up for him. Usually Dana fights as a super featherweight but he’ll be going up a division for this one.”

Stephen said he was confident Dana could get the win, with a possible world ranking fight on the horizon if he was successful.

“For a super featherweight he’s extremely strong, he’s fast and his boxing IQ is far superior to the kid he’s fighting,” Stephen said.

“We just want to go out there and make a good impression because a win would propel him onto big things.”

Dana will close out the year with a final fight on December 7 in Beerwah.

A TRAIL ride and come-try fundraiser day has been planned by the Maleny High School Chaplaincy Committee for the school’s chaplain, Donna Turner.

Money raised will support Donna’s work providing services and running programs for students.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 30 at 11 Bretons Road Crohamhurst (off Bald Knob Road, 20 minutes from Maleny, Landsborough or Peachester). Various activities will take place from 8am-5pm.

The Sunny Coast Trail Horse Riders have volunteered to lead horse trail rides for all trail riders, especially those who have never tried trail riding before. All are welcome to bring their own horse or come and try on a beautiful property that will be opened exclusively for this event.

There will also be a mini clinic on horse handling, which will demonstrate how to be safe on and off the horse, plus two sessions on dressing and caring for your horse. For non-riders, there will be guided bushwalks through a beautiful forested area, incorporating a local history talk about the old Crohamhurst School and Inigo Jones, the well-known and sometimes controversial long-range weather forecaster.

You won’t go hungry as a scrumptious sausage sizzle, drinks, snacks and a proper coffee van will be available.

MEMBER for Glass House Andrew Powell has announced Mt Mee local Mikayla Crouch the 2021 winner of the annual $1,000 Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary.

Mikayla was one of three applicants interviewed by a panel consisting of Mr Powell, Mrs Newton’s daughter Jennifer Tunley and the Sunshine Coast Business Council’s Sandy Zubrinich.

“Mikayla epitomises the spirit in which the bursary was established,” Mr Powell said.

Raised on a Mt Mee dairy farm, Mikayla is keen to pursue a career in agriculture and environmental sustainability to show the world that farmers love and care for their environment.

As an indication of how tight the competition was between the three finalists, the panel decided to award bursaries of $750 each to the two runners-up – Leo de Clara of Beerburrum, who attends St Joseph’s Nudgee College, and Chelsea-Ann Johnson of Peachester, who attends Glasshouse Christian College.

Zonta expands business directory ENTRIES close soon for the 2022 Zonta Club of Blackall Range business and community directory, with the club planning to expand its circulation to include Palmwoods and Woombye.

Originally an initiative of the Mapleton Library, Zonta took over the directory in 2008. The Zonta Club of Blackall Range Business Directory currently covers the areas of Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton and includes information and phone numbers for businesses, trades and professions, community organisations, and medical and emergency contacts.

Zonta’s service committee oversees the directory from consultation with clients to publication. Committee chair June Robson said the directory, like its Apex counterpart for the Maleny end of the range, did not compete with the day-to-day advertising in the local media that was important to communication between traders and the public.

“We look on it as complementary to the vital service provided by our wonderful local press,” June said.

“It is so handy to have a quick reference of generic ads on the shelf for when you need help with anything from accountancy to water services.

“I find it so frustrating having to scroll through the confusing mass of information on Google. With our booklet, small enough to carry in your

Local dog trainer Kate Jardine is keen to encourage children to take an active role in training and caring for their dogs. She will be running demonstrations in basic training behaviours with her dog Flash.

She is also organising a dog show with prizes for owners aged under 18 years. Competition categories include best Halloween costume, best trick and most obedient. These activities will take place outside the hall near the playgroup fence from 9-10am.

The market is also a great opportunity get a start on your Christmas shopping with plenty of stalls with crafts, toys, home baking, produce, plants, homewares and bric a brac.

Pantomime auditions

THE Maleny Players will audition for roles in their upcoming Christmas pantomime ‘The Princess and The Golden Casket’, written by Rob Hobson and directed by Rob and Kim Zwalf.

The plot is of the quest to find the golden casket before the Queen (witch) finds it. The characters are all from fairy tales and rhymes, including Alice and the white rabbit from Alice In Wonderland, The Queen from Snow White and the Huntsman, Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood with Goldilocks and dwarfs.

A REVAMP was recently l completed l d at the Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct, including a new patio at the Mary Grigor Interpretive Centre as well as new pathways and a retro paint of the old house.

The addition of the patio will allow Sunshine Coast Council to hold more all-weather events at the site, with temporary marquees no longer being required for individual events.

Another feature of the revamp was the installation of pathways to link individual buildings.

Seniors community lunch at Landsborough THE Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church’s over 50s group recently hosted a seniors community lunch at the church hall for clients of Glasshouse Country Care and other guests.

The event included a singalong led by singers from Palm Lake Resort Beachmere, followed by a presentation

by Daile and Lyn from Parrots in Paradise bird sanctuary at Glass House Mountains. One of their parrots, Pierre, was part of the presentation.

The group was then treated to an awesome vegetarian lunch supplied by the over 50s group members. Donations were collected to support the work of Parrots in Paradise and nearly $300 was raised.

The event was a good opportunity for senior members of the church to meet with other seniors in the community as well as raise funds for a local volunteer organisation.

Grant for Beerwah Writers Group

Jason Hunt with Beerwah Writers Group President Ian B MacLeod MEMBER for Caloundra Jason Hunt attended the last meeting of the Beerwah Writers Group to present $500 as part of his Caloundra Action Program (CAP) initiative.

Group spokesperson Patty Beecham said the group was delighted to receive the CAP grant, which would subsidise room hire and printing costs of its latest anthology collection of work by local authors, ‘Another Bookworm’s Delight’.

“We are a community-based notfor-profit organisation which has been ongoing for nearly 17 years, with an average attendance of up to 22 people per meeting,” Patty said.

“Our writers are from all walks of life with different writing goals but all wanting to improve their writing skills.

“We actively pursue meetings involving workshops, writing exercises, readings, tutoring and discussion,” she said.

The group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 10am-12noon in the meeting room at The Hub, opposite the skate park, at 32 Sportsground Drive Beerwah.

“The diversity of our membership reflects our community, not only in terms of writing skills but assists our older members with comradeship, support and the sharing of community information,” Patty said.

GLENDA Sellenger’s new garden was the venue for last month’s social gathering. The beautifully kept garden has a multitude of interesting ornamental plants, many from Victoria, planted in the shelter of trees. For those who like salvias, there was a large selection to enjoy.

Results of the competition bench for August were first place to Trish Bradford on 18 points and second place to Pam Innes on 17 points.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 21 at 9.30am. We will meet in the Peachester Hall for morning tea, the

Scone Time on the patio ANOTHER hugely successful Scone Time was hosted at Bankfoot House this month, with guests enjoying tasty scones with lashings of jam and cream or butter and golden syrup along with some great live music.

The event was combined with a celebration of the revamp that the heritage precinct has recently undergone. Guests gave the thumbs up for the new patio on the Mary Grigor Centre as a great all-weather venue for local activities.

EACH day I pass the large fig tree across the road from Glass House Mountains State School, featured in an article in GC&M News September 28 edition, as I walk my dog.

What has often bothered me is how unbalanced the tree looks. It leans towards the school as soon as the trunks leave the ground. An overwhelming number of branches stretch in the direction of the school as they reach for the sun. Should, for any reason, the tree fall it would take out the power lines that run along this section of Coonowrin Road. It would also crush any vehicles parked in the carpark. More importantly, it could crush anyone in the vicinity.

While this is a magnificent specimen it is, unfortunately, in the wrong place.

My concerns are for the lives and safety of the children, parents, staff and anyone else walking past.

Regrettably I believe that the tree should go.

Coles appeal

REGARDING the update of the Coles appeal in GC&M News, September 28 edition, Greg Brown correctly noted that “many who made submissions against the original Coles development application are eligible to join the legal battle but have not elected to do so”.

Along with others, we intended to sign up as co-respondents, subject to legal advice regarding court costs.

After consulting with two legal entities and not obtaining clear-cut information, the decision was made not to join this case as co-respondents.

However, we do appreciate that others have joined up in support of the council in this appeal.

GC&M News frequently publishes readers concerns on the lack of Sunshine Coast Council’s investigations into land use. I can identify with this lack of concern.

Over five years ago I sold a house in Mary Cairncross Avenue. The purchaser wanted a house with dual living. As the house had a part that was easily made separate there was the potential for an Airbnb situation. With very little work, their desire for dual living would be met.

After the sale was completed, the Airbnb did not develop and instead the free-standing shed was converted to a single-person dwelling.

The land is described as 2,231m2 and its land-use as “single unit dwelling”.

Work on the shed seemed to be done by the purchasers and it was duly let.

Several times the council’s attention was drawn to these facts but did not seem to show any concern.

Ready to protest

CORONAVIRUS still features in our news bulletins. With demonstrations in the streets protesting about coronavirus-caused lockdowns, surely the only people who should participate are those who are fully vaccinated.

Now that vaccines are available for everyone the lockdowns are perhaps being caused by non-vaccinated people spreading the virus. So, in effect, unvaccinated protesters in the street are out protesting about themselves.

Maybe people who don’t want to be vaccinated should declare, if they fall ill, they don’t want to use ambulance and hospital facilities.

Anyway, I’m preparing my banners and walking shoes ready to walk around making a statement.

Legacy Week efforts

TO the Glasshouse Country Legacy group members and supporters, I would like to express a genuine vote of thanks.

This small but effective group of dedicated, truly energetic individuals raised $4,389.95.

These wonderful workers included Patricia Sweetman, Elizabeth Goodall, Marlene Lewis, Coral McLintock and Desley Hooker, who sold orchids and other treasured items as well as numerous teddy bears representing the Australian Defence Force.

Thanks also to our two back-up providers, Ray Whittaker and Glen Bergman, who kept the sellers very busy.

This was a remarkable response to a very worthy cause, as widows and children are supported by the great effort of volunteers who realise the incredible hardships and daily danger these young people have faced.

Their bravery, endurance and spirit remain with us, through Legacy.

RE: VAD legislation

JOHN P Brodie JP (GC&M News, September 28) pointed out the medical profession have an unprecedented influence on the rights of dying people in respect of the new VAD legislation.

Regrettably John, it’s my experience that other groups and so-called professionals have a baneful presence as well. I was at a community meeting about the legislation when a lawyer took the floor and suggested that those of us who’d already sorted out our advance care directives would have to revisit them because they were outdated.

I wouldn’t do as the gentleman advised because, amongst other things, I’d already had enough of a run from the union of JPs.

I took my original advance care directive, plus power of attorney documents, signed by family members and a medical practitioner, plus a photocopy, to a JP for his signature, etc. He said I should have bought a booklet from a newsagent and not have downloaded and printed the internet version. Nuts, I thought, and left. Why, oh why have two versions? Why should I pay more?

I went to a JP at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. She moaned as well.

Clearly, the job of signing was difficult. I persisted. She reluctantly complied. She said I needed multiple copies. I said it wasn’t her problem. Out of the blue she said that Labor was bringing back death taxes. There was a federal election on.

She said this in a hospital!

The next thing, no doubt, will be the exorbitant price of a funeral that my family will face.

Note: It’s not euthanasia legislation.

It’s voluntary assisted dying. You euthanise animals not humans.

In this country John, you can’t even die in peace. There’s always someone wanting to tell you what to do.

Not everyone knows how to access this information, so thank you.

Now the scary part is the amount of new accommodation planned – be it retirement, aged care or residential.

As there is next to no public transport, these new residents will need to drive.

The Beerwah Village Shopping Centre and Marketplace can’t cope with the number of cars now. I say cars, although many are minibus size.

Yes, the new extension will have more parking but we need more options for shopping.

As D Ferguson states (GC&M News, September 28), if we do have to drive elsewhere to source what isn’t available in Beerwah, we do all our shopping, therefore Beerwah misses out. In fact, Beerwah on a whole would benefit greatly from a Coles, BWS, twin movie theatre, a shoe shop. Not forgetting a Bunnings! How about Coles comes into vacant land in Turner Street and Bunnings goes over to Roys Road and put the servo along Steve Irwin Way towards Australia Zoo! Oh, and Mick Proctor (GC&M News, September 28), I think the bright pink signs are a real eye catcher – brilliantly stand out and inoffensive.

Public transport

I CHOSE to live on the Sunshine Coast because I didn’t want to look down on the Gold Coast. I am now looking at the white sheets of ugliness of Aura and Harmony.

Now with the ‘light rail’ (for heaven’s sake, it’s a tram) proposal, which necessitates the resumption

of properties from Caloundra to Maroochydore, this would entail tram lines either side of the road, or in the middle. Or, in the case of no tracks, overhead wires.

Many people, including myself, are saying that small electric/hydrogen buses are the way to go. They are flexible enough to vary the routes, buildings don’t have to be resumed and won’t waste a lot of money.

However, not as well-known is the fact that council will allow high rises to be built so that there will be enough people to use it. And, let’s face it, if planning allows 5-10 storeys developers will want 10-15. And then? Hello Gold Coast.

This area cannot cope with the population as it is, let alone anymore.

It’s all well and good to bring people in, and it’s bad enough that most will be on flood plains, but this planning is ridiculous.

As far as infrastructure is concerned, it must be in place before any more development is allowed.

While this might not seem to be a direct problem for us in the hinterland, it is still our money that pays for it, as well as all the wasted money that has already been spent on surveys,

preliminary reports, etc. So many people say they don’t want to see us looking like the Gold Coast. Well, that’s where we’re heading.

Sunday, October 17 at 10 am a protest is gathering at Alex Headland.

JOHN MCGRATH – NATIONAL SALES SKYROCKET TO HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE 2004 Almost 600,000 homes have changed hands across Australia over the past year, which is a 40% increase on a year ago and 25% above the 20-year average, according to CoreLogic data.

The biggest increases have occurred in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, which were weak markets for a few years before COVID-19 and are now catching up. Sales are up about 60%.

The number of Queensland sales has also soared by 54% due to the highest level of interstate migration into the Sunshine State in 16 years, primarily from Sydney and Melbourne.

Sales are so high because the pandemic has inspired so many people to upgrade their homes and lifestyles. Historically low home loan rates, along with very high household savings because we’re not travelling or holidaying have facilitated this trend across the entire national market.

We explore this extraordinary population shift in our newly released McGrath Report 2022.

Whilst the inner suburbs of metropolitan markets (especially the bigger cities) will remain entrenched at the top end of the market, proximity to the city is becoming less valuable for many over lifestyle.

This is because many people have now found that their daily trek in and out of the city is no longer necessary, courtesy

of telecommuting, and many have decided to move to their dream location now rather than waiting until they retire.

Fringe areas are already huge beneficiaries, as many inner-city dwellers eye off the enviable lifestyle available 20-30km further afield in areas where value for money compares favourably with the trendy inner urban environment for young families and empty nesters alike.

The same can be said for lifestyle locations (read treechange and seachange) within two hours of major hubs.

I think the biggest question people have today is why is the market performing so strongly, despite being in the midst of one of the greatest social and economic challenges in recorded history?

As counter-intuitive as that reality seems, there’s little doubt that most markets around Australia are experiencing very positive conditions, which have lifted most values to record highs.

So, what are the drivers behind this surge? I think the elements that are buoying this market are several layers deep and include economic factors as well as strong human elements.

Let’s look at what I believe are the top four drivers: 1. Record low interest rates.

We have never seen money so cheap to

borrow in this country and it’s looking like the current low rates are here to stay for years to come. Globally, interest rates are locking-in at these levels for at least five years, so first home buyers, upgraders and investors are taking advantage of them.

2. Comfort and safety Whether it’s upgrading their current home or buying an investment property, most Australians seek the comfort and safety of bricks and mortar in difficult times. So, the sleep-at-night factor that property delivers combined with the aforementioned cheap money has driven millions of Australians to invest or invest further in residential property.

3. Low stock levels Low stock means demand is far outstripping available supply. Until we see a return to a more normalised level of properties for sale, we will continue to see overweight demand pushing prices higher. Even with record high prices, many sellers are fearful of getting out of the market before their next destination is found. So, with everyone waiting for their dream home to come along before they go to market, we find ourselves in an unusually low listing environment.

4. Fear of missing out (FOMO) When a share market or property market runs like this, we usually see a large amount of FOMO engulfing society, meaning, “if everyone else is buying or

Joy of Singing Landsborough LocaL community members, Bekky Hoge and cara Roberts have been chatting with Jody Blackburn (Hinterland Development Worker from caloundra community centre) about the need for opportunities for people to come together and experience the joy of singing.

They approached Brian Martin who runs the successful community choir, Joy of Singing Maleny and he has agreed to host a community choir in Landsborough.

Bekky said we are so lucky as Brian brings decades of music experience, and equally importantly, he shares our passion for bringing people together and connecting with our voices, our community and nature.

“Joy of Singing Landsborough is a little bit different to typical choirs as it’s being held outdoors,” Bekky said.

“With coviD restrictions being part of our lives now, hosting the choir in nature will allow sessions to go ahead at times when masks are required indoors, but not outside.” cara said the land and wildlife at Rocky creek Scout camp are beautiful and this space was very important to the traditional owners, the Gubbi Gubbi people, so that makes it even more special to gather there to sing.

Joy of Singing Landsborough is ideal for anyone who would like to spend time in nature and sing with others.

Brian said you don’t need to be able to read music or have any technical music knowledge or training.

“You just need to be open to connecting and willing to give it a go - it’s a lot of fun,” Brian said. if you are concerned that your singing voice isn’t ‘good enough’, Brian reckons he’s never found a voice he couldn’t work with.

The power of your voice

iT is your personal musical instrument and no one will have one that sounds just like yours. That’s a nice place to start but, depending on you and your life experience, you may not love the sound of your voice. That’s oK. Let’s begin by accepting that sounding like your favourite singer isn’t a prerequisite for this extraordinary source of power you possess and it’s ready to go to work for you if you’d like to tune your physical, mental and spiritual health.

Go online and google “healing with your voice” or similar to get started on this fantastic journey. i’ve recently read books from Jonathan Goldman, Dick Rigby and olivea Dewhurst-Maddock but there are many that can get you started. interestingly, there is so much you do with your voice already that assists you in leading a healthy life and you probably just aren’t aware of those things. Goldman’s ‘The Humming Effect’ is a superb introduction to the value of something you’ve most likely been doing all your life but which could use a little tuning to get it working at it best.

Talking of tuning, you may be someone who thinks they are tone deaf and couldn’t sing to save themselves. Well, quite the opposite is the case and if you can recognise low and high and loud and soft, and can make vowel sounds such as ooh and aah and eey and oh, then you are on the way. Toning, a

word coined in the 1960s, is used to describe the use of the voice to intone or sing long held notes. it can begin as simply as sounding an exhaled breath. Go online and read a little on toning. one of the simplest ways to get started with your voice as a healing or toning instrument is to begin each day with a basic vocal mantra using vowel sounds to resonate or energise your chakras. it is something again recommended by Johnathan Goldman, so he’ll be your best source for this exercise. However, i’ll give you a taste in a few sentences.

You sing a different vowel for each of the seven chakras beginning with number one, the root at the base of your spine, and move up in pitch with each chakra to the highest, the crown at the top of your head. You energise each chakra by intoning a vowel for it and, with luck and practise, find a pitch that seems to resonate with it. Then repeat that a number of times. You will find this whole experience meditative and, for some, quite empowering. accompanying yourself with a pitched instrument might increase your self-assurance with this exercise or finding an audio recording online could be another confidence booster. Take those helpers as a starting point though, as ideally you are being flexible and finding a pitch that sits well with you. Trust me, do a little research or find yourself someone to help you get you started with this. You’ll feel much the better for it.

River School Spring Fair GET along to Maleny’s River School Spring Fair on Saturday October 23 for a good dose of fun and relaxation.

The festivities kick off at 10am and roll through to 3pm, with entertainment, stalls and activities for your enjoyment.

There will be live local music and games on the oval for all ages.

You can enjoy story time at the year 2 book stall or the colouring zone for some quiet time.

Make your own jewellery and slime, and –an oldie but a goodie – you can even help to dunk the teacher.

Fun at Mooloolah Valley Playgroup MOOLOOLAH Valley Playgroup is open to all with little ones aged 0-5 years for mornings of fun, play, interactive learning and social time. Playgroup is on each Wednesday during school term from 9.30–11am at the before and after school care building at Mooloolah State School, 48 King Road Mooloolah.

Little ones come together each week for activities including craft, sand play, playdough, toys, puzzles, ball play, interactive learning, group reading and singing time. The friendly group of parents and carers love a chat over a cuppa and playgroup is a fantastic way to make new friends for kids and adults.

Community grandparents also love to help at playgroup and get to know the kids.

their own snacks and drinks. Anyone with flu-like symptoms is asked not to attend until they are well again.

There is no entry fee. Instead, people are required to become a member of Playgroup Queensland (www. playgroupqld.com.au), partly to cover insurance. Membership is required by the third visit, giving parents and children the opportunity to come and try for free first. Membership is free for families with a child under 12 months old and $40 (77 cents a week) for those with children aged over 12 months.

What ’s happening at the Glassie?

BROWNIE and I decided to head next door to Club Glass House – aka The Glassie – last week for lunch and to check out some of the upgrades the club has been doing.

Before you even enter the club these days you notice work is under way to create an easier access and more enticing entry area, with a lovely big glass sliding door, and more work is happening in the coming weeks and months.

Inside, the main bar area has had a facelift and is looking more contemporary. However, the best news is that there is plenty more choice for the beer drinkers with 12 beers on tap, up from seven.

The Glassie crew has also been working on expanding the regular events to include a monthly family fun Sunday afternoon on the bowling green with live music and entertainment.

Fortunately for Brownie and I, we managed to arrive just when the staff were doing a Halloween cocktail and mocktail photo shoot, so we can bring you a sneak peek of what will be on the drinks menu on Sunday, October 30.

The cocktails and mega shares are $10 and the mocktails (Snot Tail and Moonshine) are $5.

All about the roads IT’S been a big month for roads on the Sunshine Coast including the completion of the Caloundra Road/ Bruce Highway Interchange. I joined Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey on September 30 to make the big announcement. The project is the first diverging diamond interchange in Australia thanks to state and federal funding coming together to create a design that’s viable for the future.

The active transport tunnels are now adorned with the most spectacular artwork created by local Kabi Kabi artist Lyndon Davis. They tell the story of the seasons here on the coast and they are something really special.

We have also hit 35% completion on the long-awaited Bells Creek Arterial Road this week. If you get a chance, hop onto my Facebook page and check out the video footage of the project so far.

Parliament sits the week beginning October 11 but I will be heading out to Landsborough to catch up with the locals on Thursday, October 21.

I’ll be knocking on doors to hear your thoughts about what the people of Landsborough need.

I WANT to express appreciation to all the private property owners throughout Division 5 who make a special effort to keep their road verges and pathways maintained and tidy. It makes the place much more attractive and appealing. So, thank you for your efforts.

Important road upgrades for Division 5 Over the next five months you’ll see extensive reseal and refurbishment works on 37 separate roads and streets across the Division 5 area, including Conondale and Cambroon. These works are a major injection into the community totalling an approximate expenditure of $3.3 million to maintain our bitumen road networks and keep them in good working condition.

Councils that fail to carry out this type of work can see roads fall into disrepair.

Council will notify residents before work starts but you can expect the works to be undertaken in the warmer months allowing for better adherence of the bitumen.

I will be there, along with the federal Minister for Veterans Affairs Andrew Gee, to meet local former ADF members and hear about their experiences over the past two years, and join them in enjoying a day at the zoo. I welcome the Morrison government’s positive response to both inquiries and their commitment to make progress on these important issues. However, the hard work needs to begin right now and I will continue to press for urgent action.

A COMMUNITY COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Caloundra Indoor Sports Centre will start operating again on Friday, October 8 and will be open seven days a week from 9am-4.30pm.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has reminded locals that vaccinations are our ticket to a safer future and our best defence in the fight against COVID-19.

“The sooner our community is vaccinated, the greater the likelihood that we can start to move on from the impacts of this pandemic on our jobs, our families and many of the things we enjoy,” Mr Jamieson said.

“Now is the time for us to come together as a community and get the

As well as the clinic at the Caloundra indoor stadium there are options available to get vaccinated through participating GPs and pharmacies.

“What could be more important than the health of our community? Please continue to share your vaccination selfies online and talk to your friends and family about getting vaccinated,” Mr Jamieson said.

Queensland Health has also made it even easier to book in for your jab by adding a direct link to its Check In Qld app.

Rats and mice in the garden WITH the weather warming and the rains starting, we’ll see an increase in pests around the yard.

Introduced mice and rats are common across our region, loving the smorgasbord of delights we provide in our chook runs, bird aviaries and compost bins.

Mice and rats not only create damage by chewing and eating, they can also carry and spread serious diseases that can affect us and our pets.

We do have a few native rats (swamp rat, bush rat and water rat) and mouselike marsupials (antechinus, melomys and water mouse) that cohabit with us.

They’ll cause you little grief and provide a good food source for native birds and reptiles.

It’s important to first try to work out if you’re lucky enough to have these native critters rather than the pesky pest varieties. It’s too involved to explain all the identification differences between the natives and all the ferals but a good place to start is the Queensland Museum (https://cutt.ly/qEP8Y55) and the Australian Museum (https://cutt.ly/ PEP8O72).

Next, see if you can dissuade them by removing access to food sources or

making it hard for them to gain access such as using vermin-proof netting.

If you need to control the mice or rats, you basically have three options (and I’m not including buying a cat or getting a snake).

The most humane option is live traps.

These are cages or tube traps where the animals are lured with food or an attractant, and they can’t get back out.

The benefit is that you can check if it is a native or a pest before dealing with it. If it’s a pest, the downside is that you then have to deal with it.

Most people just let the mouse or rat go somewhere else, which sounds good but you’re most likely giving the problem to someone else or allowing the released animal to damage the environment where it’s released.

According to the RSCPA releasing it may also not be as humane as you think. It says that the available evidence suggests the survival rate of relocated animals is often very low.

Releasing animals into a new location is therefore unlikely to be a more humane alternative to killing them quickly and painlessly.

If you’re not up to doing that yourself, the option is to take the animal in the

Lillypilly’s (Syzygium spp.) are all edible (if you are hungry enough) but from our local ones the Riberry S. luehmannii is not only bountiful but tastes good raw and even better glaced in a sugar syrup.

Davidson Plums (Davidsonia spp.) although not strictly local, are spectacular foliage specimens with their large leaves and large beautiful looking plum like fruit. They are a tad sour, but nothing that a few spoons of sugar can’t fix to make a great jam or syrup.

Plum Pine (Podocarpus elatus) also produce a juicy, succulent, plum like fruit with a pleasant pine taste and again is fantastic for jams and syrups. Finger Limes are a great local treat and now highly sought after the world over. We have the cultivar Rainforest Pearl now available as grafted plants ready to fruit in just a few seasons.

Then there are the native mints, native celery, native parsnip, yam, scrambling lily, tamarinds, sour cherry, bunya pine and many, many more. Taste the real Australia and add local flavours to your diet with local native plants in your backyard.

Next on the list is what are called snap traps. These are the traditional mouse and rat traps that use a bait to lure the animal, which triggers a sprung mechanism that quickly and cleanly delivers a deadly blow to the head or neck.

The RSPCA says that, if used correctly, they can be a more humane way to dispose of a pest animal than live trapping.

The downside is that it kills (or injures) what it catches and that could be a native animal or a pet if the trap is placed poorly.

The third, and most controversial, option is the use of a mouse or rat bait.

People often choose to use bait when there are lots of rats or mice, when they are in a hard to deal with spot (like a narrow roof cavity) or – more often – because it gives people an option where the animal dies unseen, so we don’t have to deal with that unpleasantness.

Although baiting is an easy option, it is risky for children, pets and wildlife.

However, because this topic is a bit more involved than trapping, I’ll cover it in my column in the November 9 edition.

Orchid Spectacular lives up to its name THE Beerwah Community Hall was transformed into a sea of colour on September 24-25 as the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society held its annual Spring Orchid Spectacular.

Most of the orchids had been sold by mid-morning on the second day, making this year’s event one of the most successful in the group’s history.

Society spokesperson Sue Jones said group members were all exhausted but still on a high.

“It was a very successful two days,” Sue said. “We had about 20% more people through the doors than normal and the sales exceeded previous years too.”

Sue was not too sure why this year’ss show was ecause so popular but she thinks it may be because o last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Contributed by Miles Allen The club has been a delightful place to be in the last two weeks. The amaryllis are blooming, the green has been trimmed and blown dry and our volunteers have excelled at looking after everyone. And of course, we’ve played some excellent bowls, some of the time. and some dreadful efforts at other times.

We have already played four rounds of our last Wednesday night competition for 2021. With 16 teams, it’s the same size as the NRL but we don’t travel as much, are far better behaved and we rarely reach the salary cap.

The Wombats, our new team, won their first game and are rapidly gaining confidence. The Wot Notts coached by Roy Gesch had an outstanding win last week beating the JAM team into a pulp.

It was a tight tussle between the Doubtfuls and the Three Flamingos with the scores equal on the last end. The Doubtfuls edged ahead due to some superb play from Peter Humphries and Brad Williams.

RPT and the Mavericks have both won their last two games, but the competition is wide open at this early stage.

BeeGees Football Club

Contributed by Jodie Morgan What a great week for the club with the Football Queensland (FQ) Sunshine Coast Football Awards being handed out to our much-deserved players and Coach.

Coach Michael Topfer was awarded the Sunshine Coast Premier Women’s Coach of the year – well done for all the time and effort you put into the club Toppy.

Amy Higgins took home the Sunshine Coast Women’s Player of the Year and Melissa Weckert was awarded the Sunshine Coast Women’s Golden Boot

Marilyn Podmore, Roy Gesch, Geoff Jepsen (from Townsville) and Liz Williams The Kingston Triads and the Tutors have been struggling with their form but there’s nothing that a bit of concentration and practice can’t fix.

Recent winners at Friday Scroungers have been Jim King, Kathy King, Joe Walters, Liz Williams, Relma Godfrey, Dave Coultis and Marilyn Podmore (twice).

The winner of the monthly competition was Brett Gillis who bowled like a

champion. We occasionally change the format of the game on Fridays, but the aim of the game is always to get as many bowls as close to the jack as possible.

Runner Up. Beerwah Glasshouse United FC also won the award for FQ Sunshine Coast Administration Award and Amanda Milburn was a runner up in the Sunshine Coast Outstanding Achiever Award – a fantastic effort by all at our club this year.

To top the week off BeeGees FC had seven teams in the finals – Premier Women, Premier Reserve Women, U16 Girls, U14(2) Boys, U14 Girls, U13(3) Boys and U12(2) Green – congratulations to all teams, what a great achievement!

We had two that have gone on to win their finals games and will be playing in the grand finals on Saturday, October 16. If you can, get down and support our BeeGees’ players on this special day!

Congratulations to the U14 Girls who defeated Maleny 3 – 0, goals by E.Sluga, H Collins and M Gladwin. Players of the match were the whole team.

The U 13(3) boys had a fantastic game against Noosa FC defeating them 1 – 0, with the goal by H Jones.

and third Malcolm Lower 36 points on countbacks from Chris Pottinger, Chris Small and Geoff Jepson, all 36 points.

Contributed by Ken Barker THE Eileen Harrison Friendship Day, in honour of one of the founding members of our club, celebrated croquet on Thursday, September 23 with a large turnout from other clubs as well as newcomers. It was a huge success. As well as the traditional forms of croquet – golf, ricochet and association – novelty events were held. Congratulations and thanks to all who made it such an enjoyable day.

While this was happening at home, a Ranbour (Range and Nambour) team consisting of Bill Habner (Nambour), Janelle Wilson and Ken Barker defeated a Headland Buderim team at Headland 2-1 games, playing the last games in the ricochet pennants competition. This win cemented first place for Ranbour with five wins. Runner-up was Coolum with four wins followed by Headland with three.

On Sunday, September 26 Val Carbery and Colin Harris from Coolum teamed up to give Nick Cram and Ken a close game, finishing just behind them 12-14.

Helen Andrews and Kath Smith beat Stuart Craig and Vince 12-3.

The competition for the Bray Shield concluded on Wednesday, September 29 when team one, consisting of Miggy Mackey, Helen Uhlmann and Kath, played a Nambour team of Martin Atkins and Robyn Pettman. Congratulations to Nambour who won the round 3-0.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley Sunday September 26: The challenging weather conditions were masterfully handled by both teams in what was always going to be a close competition between Witta Wompoos and Gympie in the penultimate round of the Seniors teams’ event.

With a dwindling team of injured players, Witta relied on a couple of very capable substitutes to get us through the day. Many thanks to John Bradshaw from Witta Wikings and Malcolm Carlisile for stepping up and travelling to the away game at Gympie on short notice.

Set results alternated throughout the day with some very tight tennis and four tie break sets being contested.

The match went down to the wire and an unpredictable finish with both teams tied on 54 games each. Some consistent and nail-biting tennis displayed by both teams.

Many thanks to the Gympie team for hosting their last hit of the season on their courts. They came out eventual winners having won 7 sets to 5 with a tie break finish.

Witta Wompoos complete the season on October 24 with a home game at

Sarah played Lynette Evans on Thursday, September 30 while Val and Helen U played Sally Adams. Games were shortened because of the weather and no scores recorded.

Stuart Craig and Lynette showed no mercy in their win over Helen A and Vince, defeating them 6-4. Nick was on fire against Kath and Val, running away to a 22-9 victory.

Tennis was great, lots of deuces and rallies, also lots of running. We are happy to be back on the court and brought the win which was a bonus. Score was 6-2 sets, 45-23 games. Team was Aki Lepper, Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner and thanks to Peg Wallace for filling in.
