appy International Women’s Day for Sunday!

This global event, held each year on March 8, celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past and present.

At the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News office there is a slight imbalance in the office team, which is 90 per cent women, 10 per cent blokes. (Fortunately, Brownie copes well with the gender imbalance – he seems to have developed very strong selective hearing technique!).

So, for us we like to embrace the spirit of International Women’s Day and for many years we have put together an advertising feature that showcases a selection of our talented local women who are pivotal in the success of the businesses they either own or work in locally.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Make it Happen’ and when you read the profiles you will see that these women are definitely doing that. We hope you enjoy the read.

Local News Road report stirs response

As reported in last week’s paper, the ‘Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan 2015 – 2035’ was unanimously endorsed by council at the recent Ordinary Meeting.

The plan uses a systematic approach to identify, score and rank the important dirt roads which will require upgrading to bitumen over the next 20 years.

This resulted in 106 roads or road sections being listed and prioritised.

Of these, 44 were recommended to be sealed over the life of the plan, none of which are within the readership region of GCM News.

By approving the Plan, council has provided – as the endorsed plan states – ‘… a strong indication as to the status of individual roads and their likely timing for future full upgrading.’

Despite there being no mention of the word in either the planning document or the published minutes, Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski believes the report to be an ‘interim’ one.

“The report endorsed at the last General Meeting was an interim report on an ongoing council effort to assess our unsealed roads against more objective criteria, such as traffic volumes, linkages, and dust impacts,” Cr Baberowski stated.

“I want residents to be aware that the recent report does not mean that no local unsealed roads will receive funding in the next 20 years.

“That would be completely unacceptable, and I would of course vigorously oppose any such plan.

“While I share the community's frustration that none of our local unsealed roads have been identified as high priority so far, that is definitely not the end of the story.

“Even where assessments have been done, the priorities identified by the staff compiling this particular report are not final or binding, and will certainly not stop residents from arguing their case, and it doesn't stop me from seeking funding from council or other sources to upgrade local roads as usual,” he said.

The report identified that an indicative figure of $3 million per year should be allocated towards sealing dirt roads.

“However, I am pleased that council has decided to put significant extra money towards addressing this issue on a more rational and consistent basis, and I will certainly be advocating for us to get a fair share of that money,” he said.

It’s just a shame that they didn’t consider any local roads too in that fair share of the money to begin with.

Volunteers join Beerwah Police Earlier this year a Volunteer in Policing Induction Course was conducted for Police Volunteers for the Sunshine Coast.

Included in the group were two locals who are now volunteering at the Beerwah Police Station – Brian Lewis and Vikki Smith.

The induction ceremony was hosted by Officer-inCharge, Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Unit, Senior Sergeant Brad Grant who said that he was very impressed with the skill sets and enthusiasm that these latest volunteers bring to the Queensland Police Service.

“These volunteers will be a welcome addition in further engaging with local communities and fostering partnerships to help solve policing problems,” he said.

Beerwah Police Community Liaison Officer, Constable Susan Lowndes said there was a rigorous selection process followed for choosing the volunteers, and that the volunteers came from a broad range of backgrounds, each bringing a different set of skills to the role.

“The Beerwah volunteers will be involved in a number of local projects, including updating our ‘Key Register’ which is a database of after-hours contact details for local businesses,” she said.

This information is required when the business owners / managers need to be notified that the premises are not secure, for example when their business may have been broken into or they have been the victim of vandalism.

Constable Susan Lowndes and Brian Lewis The volunteers may also be involved in assisting with regular Blue Light Discos, or in other educational or communication activities.

Brian Lewis of Glass House Mountains, who has previously worked as a Military Police Officer and an Inspector with the RSPCA, said he was really pleased to have the opportunity to become involved in the local community.

“I am enjoying the interactions with others, keeping my mind active and doing something meaningful,” he said.

Beerwah Police Acting Senior Sergeant Glenn Peatling said he was really looking forward to utilising our volunteers in a positive way to benefit our local community.

Working together is showing results

When the community pull together it is amazing what can be achieved, and the campaign the Glass House Mountains Sports Club has been running to save the club is just such an example.

The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club President Warren Raddatz said the generosity of so many has been amazing, in particular the cheque for $10,000 we received from the Maleny Apex Club.

Keith Owen, who serves on the Sports Club's committee as the cricket representative, is also an active member of the Maleny Apex Club.

He encouraged his fellow Apex members to help because the sports club serves a wider community and required supporting. The result was the staggering $10,000 donation.

"It is good to see a club (Apex) that is not from the Glass House area support another," Keith said.

"It demonstrates the far reach the sports club services and how vital it is to the whole district," he said.

The local member for Glass House, Andrew Powell has also made a contribution of $2,500.00 to the fundraising efforts.

Andrew said he felt that one of the best ways he could show his own personal support was to make a financial contribution towards the community campaign to keep the club going.

“I'm very confident that my little bit, along with the contributions of many community members and groups, will ensure we have this facility open long into the future,” Andrew said.

“We still have a way to go, but as we inch closer to the $100, 000 mark, it is really encouraging that we will make our final target,” he said.

Warren agrees, and says the club is very appreciative of all of the contributions that have been made from community groups, businesses, government funds and residents.

"It goes to show that the whole Sunshine Coast can pull together in a time of need,” he said.

There has even been a ‘Crowd Funding Website’ set up which is a great way for locals to support the cause and make a donation from $10.00.

I hope everyone is okay after the State was battered a fortnight ago by cyclone Marcia and many roads and properties in our region saw flash flooding and damage. It’s times like these when we see a community really rally together, like instances where volunteers showed up to relocate animals from many farms near and far, and just a general sense of community, in the wild 48 hours. It was a weekend that also affected businesses, ours included. It was just not a smart thing to endanger our staff travelling through flood waters for the few people who may have been in a position to come into the office, or to open homes. That being said, there were still people out and about in unaffected parts of the region who did purchase properties, which just goes to show that real estate never stops. Although we’re now into Autumn and the cooler months are upon us, it doesn’t mean that real estate stops. In fact, some would say it’s a much better time to be on the market because competition is sparse. When it does get cold, it wouldn’t hurt to have a wood fire place roaring or the heating on when potential buyers enter the house, transforming your house into a cozy home.

Three local young people were present, after spending most of the previous day being interviewed by a team of independent judges.

Rae Josland in her speech posed the question of whether Australia is over governed, and are state governments really necessary.

Steven Strong led us into the world of chronic diseases, and their effects on the population.

Bethany Murray spoke on becoming a better person and making a difference.

Prior to making their speeches, the contestants had independently been given two impromptu questions to answer.

The contestants were given two minutes to speak on each question.

Rae Josland was judged the winner of the public speaking side of the contest, as well as being judged the overall winner.

Rae will now go on to contest the district finals.

So, the discussions are to introduce a ‘demand’ tariff to everyone, based on the highest demand the household makes on the supply available and even though this ‘demand’ may only be for about 1 minute, for the whole billing cycle the householder is charged at a daily rate – such as 90 days at maybe $24.139 per day … PER DAY!! (or $2,172.51 per quarter). Just so you understand it – we have local businesses who are charged this rate – $24.139 per day because for a moment of time their ‘demand’ shot up.

I do not believe it will start with that daily figure, but when you hear my story about another local householder you may decide to give your power company the flick and be independent. And before you complain about a price a local business charges you for something, try and remember how they are being ‘screwed’ just so they can provide a local service.

We are all part of this vibrant local hinterland community so please buy locally.

Art of many layers By Lea Parkes I recently met Glass House Mountains local Toni Burt, a mixed-media artist, who describes her work as inspirational art. It’s created in a whimsical and heartfelt way, with lovely inspirational messages that uplift the soul.

Toni said she has always been creative and is constantly making, building and growing things.

She has been painting since she was young, however only recently, begun working with mixed media. As you enter Toni’s studio and listen to her talk about her work, it’s clear that she absolutely loves it.

What amazed me most is how she explained that the pieces kind of evolve as she creates the individual layers, and that she never knows how they will look, until they are finished.

“I work with paints, papers, stamps, vintage imagery, and pretty much anything that can be glued down. Even my pet guinea fowl, Basil, has his lovely spotted feathers featured in my works.

Fortunately Toni loves spending her spare time digging around in old bookstores and junk shops looking for little treasures to add to her work.

“My work is created to include a special message,” Toni said. Once the piece has been completed she sees how the image affects her, and then comes up with the words that complement the individual piece.

Toni does have a University degree in Interior Design, however the work she creates these days has a far more personal and delicate touch than the work she did working in the field of Commercial and Corporate Design.

Like most artists, Toni’s passion is about spending time creating, but she also is kept busy promoting,

She has been developing a strong following from overseas buyers through her on-line presence in her Etsy store – ‘Le Petite Bijou’ (which means The Little Jewel in French) and is also the name of Toni's home where she lives.

Toni also recently formed a partnership with a publisher who is selling her designs on greeting cards in Australia and New Zealand, and is currently working on formalising an agreement with an English Agent.

Hi Nan, I’m writing about my Mum who is 68. My father passed away 5 years ago and my Mum just can’t seem to move on. She has kept all his clothes and belongings and when I mention that maybe we should give his clothes to charity it always ends up in an argument.

Since my Dad died she barely leaves the house, she has no friends and seems lost without him. I try to visit her as much as I can but it’s hard when I have my own family, work and other commitments.

I would like her to get out more and maybe even find some companionship so she is not lonely.

It is important that you respect your Mum’s right to grieve in her own way and her own time, but maybe you could suggest that she join a social club, bowling club, or walking group. There are many opportunities out there for people to meet others for friendship and companionship.

On a side note I offer discounted rates for those over 55 if she would like counselling or even a less formal chat, someone to keep her company or take her out for lunch.

It is once again time for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea! Every year the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Management Committee hosts an event to raise funds to support the fight against cancer. The event will be held on May 27, commencing at 9.00am for morning tea to be followed by a cent auction at 10.00am, and it will be the 11th morning tea that the hall has hosted.

It is always a very successful event as it not only draws our community together for a fun event but also raises a substantial sum of money for this worthy cause.

The Down Under craft group has once again pieced together a beautiful quilt which will be raffled. The craft group warmly welcomes new members so if you would like to come along and join this friendly group please do so.

They meet in the room under the hall at 9.00am every Wednesday morning.

Out & About Ask the Leylands They may have travelled all over the countryside, but these days Mal and Laraine Leyland have very happily made Maleny their home.

In February, Mal’s book ‘Mal Leyland Still Travelling’ was published so, not surprisingly, Anne from Rosetta Books hosted a local book launch at the Maleny RSL last Friday night. The book is a memoir of what is described as a life fully lived. Job well done

Contributed by Rose Daly It’s time to thank our volunteers for a grand effort in Cleaning Up Australia on March 1. Beerwah had its annual team in production on Bells Creek Road and Roys Road and collected an approximate weight of six tonnes of rubbish.

Conditions were tough, after all the rain we have experienced, but regardless, the Beerwah team did a fantastic job, mud and all. A few of the ladies need a pat on the back as they just charged into the bush and pulled out rubbish covered in ants and mud, well done ladies.

Once again a huge thank you goes to Daleys Turf for supplying the use of vehicles also Lenscaping Lawns & Garden (a new recruit) for allowing us

to use his vehicle and trailer. Also thanks to Joe for setting up a site office and smoko area. Once we had finished our clean-up, Jennifer, Manager at McDonalds Glass House, supplied us with cheeseburgers and IGA in Beerwah donated all the liquid refreshments.

As a volunteer picking up rubbish for a few hours and then to have local businesses supply us with burgers and drinks, what more could you ask for.

It makes our efforts worthwhile. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the effort and helped make a difference. Sometimes it’s really nice to know somebody cares! See you next year at clean up time.

Help needed for sausage sizzle Contributed by Lesley McLeod Kids for Life are holding a Sausage Sizzle at Currimundi Woolworths on Saturday, March 14 from 9.00am – 4.00pm to raise funds to send a Sunshine Coast Doctor over to the United States for training with experts in diagnosing and treating Lyme Disease and co-infections.

And boy do we need some help! We need about 20 volunteers to set up, cook snags and serve.

But as the Sunshine Coast needs this doctor to help our growing Lyme Community we are keen to put the word out and get some support.

It is estimated that 20,000 Australians will become infected each year and go undiagnosed.

Beerwah has its own jeweller once again This week, Beerwah Jewellers opened their doors at the Beerwah Marketplace and while you will see some new faces, you can expect the same warm, friendly and caring service that Tania and the staff from Smiley’s Jewellers greeted their customers with.

New owners Jim and Sandra Goulton, who are also the owners of Maleny Jewellers, love running their family business and are happily looking forward to celebrating their 15 year anniversary since purchasing their business in Maleny.

Jim explained that it was only in the last few weeks that they were convinced by Tania that it was the right time for them to expand their business and take on the lease of the shop at the Marketplace that Smiley's Jewellers had operated from.

Jim and Sandra know how well regarded Tania is with Glasshouse Country locals and they are also keen to become an active part of the community, just as they have been in the Maleny community for many years.

Jim and Sandra are very approachable and friendly, and the range of stock they carry is definitely not your average chain store product mix.

Sandra said that they offer the amazing Showcase range, plus they are able to source anything you are looking for, for any occasion.

“We really enjoy being able to give our customers personalised service to get them exactly the piece they are after,” she said.

Over the years, Maleny Jewellers has developed a reputation as the local ‘go-to store’ for anything sparkly and they are now looking forward to being able to do the same thing with the Glasshouse Country locals.

“We have really appreciated Tania assisting us in preparing the store for re-opening,” Jim said.

“She has given us a good understanding of the customers’ expectations and helped make the transition run smoothly.”

For the past 18 months Jim has been doing all of Smiley’s repair work so now, as the on-site jeweller, he will be able to take care of all your jewellery repair needs in-store.

Not only can he do almost any repair work, he can also do battery and water pressure testing for watches.

Jim also specialises in remaking and remodelling inherited or hand-me-down pieces of jewellery into something more suited to your liking.

And Sally will be remembered from working in her family's business, Bennett's Jewellers, when it was located on the other side of Peachester Road at Beerwah.

Glasshouse Mountains Combined Probus Contributed by Val Machin What is Probus? Come along and see! We no longer work full time, but provide opportunities to keep minds active, expand interests, build new relationships and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. We participate in monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. This month we are at the Beerwah RSL Function Room. Our meeting venues have been changing lately while we wait the outcome of the Sports Club at Glasshouse. Starting time is 10.00am. Our speaker for March is locally known as ‘The Camel Lady’. Lauren Brisbane will be telling us about her life with Camels.

A free morning tea is provided. We have a vegetable and fruit box donated

by Matilda Fruit Barn which we offer as a door prize.

Our monthly outings to various and interesting places are always popular.

SES Response for Cyclone Marcia Contributed by Robert Barry

As Group Leader of the Glass House Country SES I was absolutely amazed at the responses for help in the lead up to and the aftermath of the remnants of Cyclone Marcia recently.

I cannot speak highly enough of the efforts of Deputy Group Leader Dave Erbacher and Duty Call Officer Ross Lowe.

Both Dave and Ross put in long days for the duration of the tasks. They were responsible for receiving all the requests by computer from the calls to the 132 500 SES Emergency Call Centre.

Each request for assistance was contacted by phone to determine the urgency of the request and to enquire as to whether self-help was an option.

In excess of 140 calls for assistance were registered and tasks allocated to the members for successful completion. I must also thank all our members who responded to assist over the period. Some managed a few hours but most were available for a full day or more. I cannot thank them all enough.

Recognition is also given to the Landsborough and Beerwah Rural Fire Units and the Beerwah Fire and Rescue Crew. These organisations provided back-up to ensure that all the tasks were fulfilled quickly and efficiently.

Mostly, I want to thank the community. In my 29 years of involvement with the SES, I have not seen such a response where the community members requesting assistance, actually helped themselves by coming to the shed to pick up sand bags and tarpaulins. In many instances they actually helped fill sand bags. After receiving advice as to the possible numbers of bags required and how to lay them, they then returned to their homes to complete the task.

The high number of calls for assistance was probably a result of the media advising the public to be prepared early which was just as well, for during the exceptionally heavy rain, many local roads started to be cut and this would have made requests for help very difficult if not impossible.

Thanks also to the community members for their cash donations and food which helped to sustain the workers.

Our group is a normal SES Group that happens to specialise in the mountain rescues of which there about 10 to 12 per year. We would like to welcome any persons interested in joining the group to call Dave on 0417 759 483, Ross on 0428 710 711 or myself on 0428 894 182.

There are jobs for male/females of any age (17 and above). Everyone is not required to participle in ‘on the mountain’ activities.

We meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Once again, I thank everyone involved for the great effort over the extended period.

Walk for Women’s Cancers is back We are women, hear us roar, in numbers too big to ignore! Sunshine Coast Walk for Women’s Cancers is back, and ladies we’re lookin’ at you!

Cancer Council Queensland is on the hunt for some inspiring and aspiring local ladies to join the pretty in pink family, and ensure this year’s event on June 27 goes off with a bang.

Since its launch 10 years ago, Sunshine Coast Walk for Women’s Cancers has raised more than $450,000 for CCQ’s vital work in breast and gynaecological cancer research, education programs and patient support services.

Cancer Council Queensland Regional Fundraising Coordinator Esther Attewell said they are looking for ladies with energy and drive, to help bring great ideas to the table. “We have a wide variety of roles to suit any skill sets – with the one common denominator being enthusiasm!”

On the Sunshine Coast alone, around 460 women will be diagnosed with a women’s cancer this year, and sadly at least 90 women will die from these cancers.

“Work alongside a team of like-minded women in a fun, fast-paced and fabulous cancer fighting team – current volunteer opportunities include promotion, marketing, event management and recruitment,” Ms Attewell said.

I have recently been elected the President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and would like to extend a welcome to everyone in business to come along to one of our Networking or General Meetings. Why not come along and find out a bit more about what we do and what we can offer you?

Whilst I have not lived in the area for very long I am truly excited about the opportunities that I see for business and the community in the Glasshouse Country and surrounding regions. I am also in awe at the amount of work that has been done to date by a small but very energetic band of members and supporters of the Chamber.

We are all busy running our businesses and it is easy to sometimes feel like you are working in a silo, isolated and having to sort out problems on your own. However, often someone else has faced that same problem, or has a solution which could work for you.

And wouldn’t it be great to talk to someone in a similar or complementary industry to the one you are in?

Its’ purpose is to ensure the development of good public policy and industry best practice, with a view to helping Australians achieve the best retirement outcomes possible. In December 2014 they released updated retirement income benchmarks, indicating the amount of yearly income we need in retirement.

For a couple who own their own home, and who seek a comfortable lifestyle, a minimum income of nearly $59,000 per year is needed.

A comfortable lifestyle is referred to as one that includes costs that would allow a retired couple to be involved in a broad range of leisure and recreational activities and have a good standard of living.

Alternatively, a couple who own their own home, and who seek a modest lifestyle, will need a minimum income of almost $43,000 per year.

This income will allow retirees to afford only a fairly basic level of activity and is only slightly more than the full rate of age pension.

We also know that Australians are living longer.

For example, between 1998 and 2012, male life

expectancy at birth rose by four years from 75.9 years to 79.9 years. For females it rose from 81.5 years to 84.3 years. Further, Australians can also expect to live more of these extra years free of disability or limitation, meaning we will potentially be more active in our retirement, for longer.

This is all sounding pretty good, but consider this – what if you outlast your money?

To imagine living for a long time with a good quality of life sounds fantastic – but if your money runs out before you do…suddenly it’s not so much fun.

None of us can ever know for sure how long we will live, and therefore how much money we will need to provide our retirement incomes, but the smart thing to do is to plan for a long and healthy life!

Our current economic environment is dictating very low interest rates, and rates are likely to continue to fall throughout 2015.

This means retirees that rely on cash, term deposits or other interest bearing investments to provide their desired income, will have been subject to a pay decrease lately, and are likely to suffer further pay decreases in the future.

Not only will they have had a drop in income, but their capital value is suffering, subsequently losing its’ buying power.

Meet you at the Mailbox Which mailbox? Well that would be the Mailbox Café on Caloundra Road at Landsborough, formally Café on 8. The new owners and staff have survived their first week and are looking forward to catching up with all the regular customers.

The café’s new name harks back to the building’s history as a former Post Office before it was moved to its current location.

The new owners, mum (Joanne) and daughter (Kylie) like the idea of having a family owned business, and have plenty of great ideas.

However it will be Kylie that will be working in the café and Joanne is happy to stay behind the scenes.

School News Students clean up

STEAM Program

Contributed by Kylie Merola Every day is clean-up day at Landsborough State School where the students and staff aim to keep the grounds spick and span. However on Friday, February 27, they went a step further to help the environment by participating in Clean Up Australia Day. They embraced the challenge by swapping their books for garbage bags and gloves then walked around picking up rubbish.

The students and staff cleaned the school's own grounds as well as some surrounding streets in Landsborough Township.

Head of Curriculum, Amanda Shone, said the students learn a great deal from their involvement in Clean Up Australia Day. “They see how they can be good citizens and make a difference in their local area.

“The day teaches students the need to be conscious of the environment and the impact that incorrect disposal of rubbish has on the town.

“I am very proud of the manner in which our students undertook their task,” she said.

A one-day learning event for gifted and talented children will be held on Wednesday, April 8 at the Crystal Waters Eco-Village, Conondale.

The Ethos Foundation’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) Program event aims to engage the head, hearts and hands of young learners, to inspire them with applied knowledge and to give them great ideas for action to take back into their community.

The day offers a wide range of inventive and applied workshops aimed at gifted and talented children between seven and 12 years of age, including the chance for the kids to reach new heights in tree house design, to bend the rules with bamboo construction, to test their maths and survival skills with an ex-SAS officer, and to explore the mathematics of music and instrument construction.

Experienced and dynamic teachers will lead these sessions – including a multi awardwinning architect, university lecturers, a world-renowned instrument maker and performer, and a world-travelled ecologist.

All participating students will receive a Young Ethos Scholars Certificate.

Motoring Stay safe these holidays According to the RACQ, only 52% of Queenslanders service their cars at six or 12 month intervals.

More worrying is that RACQ research has found almost 60% of vehicles are defective and would fail a basic safety certificate inspection.

The most common defects included worn or mismatched tyres, brake problems and inoperable lights, with steering and suspension issues also featuring regularly.

Some of these are easy for any motorist to identify and have fixed, while others might only be picked up in a service by a mechanic – another reason why maintaining a regular servicing schedule is critical.

So, are you confident your car is safe and sound for when you take that road trip this Easter?

The roads over Easter can be a frightening mix of fatigued, long distance drivers, cranky last minute shoppers and tourists unfamiliar with the roads, so you don’t need any added extra problems – such as a faulty car – to deal with.

To make sure you arrive home safely after an Easter holiday road trip, the RACQ suggests some holiday motoring tips.

Planning the trip • Plan the route and don’t rush your journey – allow plenty of time • Take adequate rest breaks, at least a 15 minute break every two hours • Make sure everyone uses their seatbelts.

Particularly check young children are restrained properly • Consider how best to keep children occupied to minimise risks of driver distraction • Share the driving • Watch for signs of fatigue – feeling drowsy, lack of concentration, driving mistakes • Plan for breakdowns. If you notice a problem, don't keep driving but pull over into a safe spot and call for assistance

Car preparation • Check all lights are working properly • Check that the windscreen is clean and not chipped, scratched or cracked, and that the windscreen wipers and washers are working • Check that the tyres are in good order, inflate to correct pressure and don’t forget the spare • Check your engine oil and coolant are topped up to the correct level Caravan or trailers • Ensure all planned maintenance is up to date before setting off – particularly tyre condition, tyre pressures, wheel bearings and lights • Check the coupling for condition and operation – don’t forget the safety chain and wiring socket • Load the trailer or caravan evenly and within its weight limits (including the towing vehicle’s towing weight limit and tow-ball load) • Securely tie down any trailer load and periodically check it for movement • Make sure the spare tyre is inflated and in good order The night before you leave • Avoid alcohol • Eat properly but not too heavily • Get plenty of sleep • Don’t leave too early in the morning Part of good driving is recognising that driver fatigue can affect your performance behind the wheel well before you actually feel tired. Signs of fatigue include: • Yawning, heavy eyes or sweaty hands • Droning or humming in the ears • Daydreaming or loss of concentration • The vehicle wandering on the road • Unintentional changes in vehicle speed • Pressure in the head or temples • Stiffness or cramps If you feel these symptoms of driver fatigue, pull over where it is safe to do so, lock the doors and sleep until you are refreshed.

T

o coincide with the timing of International Women’s Day we like to highlight a selection of our successful local business women in our ‘Women in Business’ feature, and this year’s theme for the special day seemed really appropriate:

‘Make it Happen’.

In our local business community we have a really high percentage of small businesses and in many

cases it is women who are the driving forces in those business.

So we think this is a great opportunity to give many of these women the chance to share their stories and to give readers an insight into how they tick.

In last week’s edition we featured eight profiles and in this week even more, including the newest member of our GCM News team Tina Grieve.

It is always a really interesting process for us putting the stories together, as we find out that while a lot of those featured have achieved so much, they can still be quite humble when telling their stories.

Council recently audited the condition of the 285 barbecues in recreation parks across the Sunshine Coast. With each barbecue costing over $3,000 per year to clean and maintain, it is ideal that they are used often to ensure value for money to our community.

The audit identified a number of barbecues that are rarely used and recommends removing or relocating them to more suitable locations. Council has received a number of enquiries about the feasibility of constructing a new pathway along Knox Road, Mooloolah Valley connecting to an existing one on Neil Road which links into Mooloolah Valley Village.

Unfortunately, our preliminary investigation has identified a number of constraints including the need to replace or alter the rail over road bridge, adjacent to the intersection of Knox Road and Neil Road. Queensland Rail has advised this is not planned for the concrete structure at this point in time.

Living - History Remembering local Anzacs The Beerwah Family History Group is hosting an event on March 25, 10.00am - 11.30am at the Beerwah Library entitled ‘Remembering Anzacs’.

Friends of Bankfoot House There’s a buzz amongst the Friends of Bankfoot House as they prepare to move into the new purpose-built facility on the heritage site. The new building will bring many benefits – first and foremost, it will benefit the old 1878 house itself as it will no longer have to suffer the wear and tear caused by people working inside its rooms.

The volunteers are excited because they see many advantages to working in the new facility.

Advantages will come with everything being under one roof. When garden jobs call – pruning, weeding, watering – volunteers know that all the tools and equipment will be kept in the special storage room in the new building, rather than in a shipping container on the back lawn.

Volunteers will be able to work on projects without having to access the containers to gather their materials, at times needing to wear gum boots!

They will be able to undertake preservation, cataloguing and transcribing work in a fully equipped workroom, rather than on any ‘ad hoc’ surface in the house itself.

Working on the precious old 1868 red cedar table or the dining table has been unavoidable until now, and certainly less than ideal.

One of the big advantages is not having to pack away the projects they’re working on when preparing to receive visitors to the house.

“The Council endorsed Reference Group provides strategic advice on preserving and accessing cultural heritage in the Sunshine Coast region and works to raise the profile of cultural heritage,” Cr McKay said.

“They also assist in forming strategic priorities for expenditure of the Heritage Levy.

“The Reference Group consists of representatives of council, museums, historical societies, heritage groups, business, tourism and the community.”

Living - Crafts Sharing the art of smocking Maleny resident and president of the Smocking Guild of Queensland, Robyn Tindall, will be one of the group’s members on a roster at their stall at the upcoming Stitches & Craft Show at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 19 to 22.

Robyn said the theme of their display will be ‘Royal Babies’.

“Over the four days our ladies will be kept busy answering questions about smocking, discussing Guild membership and what we offer. We will also be selling a small number of smocked articles,” she said.

The Guild was formed in 1992 and came out of a group of ladies who were making tiny gowns which they donated to maternity hospitals around Queensland for premature babies who didn't survive their early arrival.

It became known as the ‘Sew Precious Programme’ and has been operating ever since.

In 2014 alone they created over 400 gowns.

These gowns are donated to Pre-term Infant and Parenting Association (PIPA) based in Brisbane. The gowns are distributed to the Gold Coast Hospitals, Royal Women’s Hospital, Mater

“These gowns are for premature babies born from 23 weeks to 32 – 36 week gestation, it is a wonderful ministry which are more than appreciated by the parents who are left bereaved,” Robyn said.

They will have a raffle at the stall to raise funds for their not-for-profit cause, Sew Precious Programme, and they will also be looking to recruit new seamstresses to join them in creating these beautifully crafted pieces.

Robyn joined the Guild in 2003 and has been dedicated ever since. Over the years the group has expanded to incorporate various Branches and Affiliates including the local group that Robyn anchors - Laura May Maleny Smocking Group that is an affiliate of the Guild.

Maleny Printmakers work on show in Beerwah This month Vianta Arts showcases five artists from the Maleny Printmakers which includes techniques such as etching and engraving, screen printing, lithograph, and lino or wood cuts.

Although often several prints are made from one block, plate or screen, each work is hand-done and is original artist created work.

This current show at Vianta includes four of Julie Hanrahan’s exquisite hand coloured lino-cuts of Australian flowers and a series of collaged photopolymer prints by Jacky Lowry.

Steph McLennan, renowned for her watercolours, has contributed to the show a number of lino-cuts, perspex engravings, and monoprints, including the engaging ‘Spangled Drongo’.

Fiona Dempster adds variety with an aluminium etching and a work made using hand stamped wooden type face, and Michele Deveze is showing a series of drypoint intaglio prints of plants and animals.

This show is hanging until March 28 – so call by at Vianta on Simpson Street, Beerwah to enjoy the art while nursing a perfect cup of tea or coffee.

In the Garden Get Up & Grow with Jade King

Urban backyard sustainability

Due to recent news regarding food contamination from overseas sources, a greater awareness of what we are actually consuming has risen. Whilst I would have no concerns about consuming Australian produce whether it be organic or conventionally grown by Australian farmers, I am definitely wary of much of our imported foods. The irony of it all is that it is predominantly us as consumers driving this demand as we seek cheaper food and / or produce out of its growing season.

Obviously in my opinion the answer is to experience the joy and rewards of growing your own and eating seasonal vegetables, and when this is not possible, then buying Australian grown produce. Making your backyard garden more productive and sustainable to do this, is no more difficult than any other type of garden.

If you are time poor and you are after a low maintenance sustainable garden, there are many easy care productive plantings. Consider bananas, passion fruit and citrus trees, with an understory of herbs and interspaces filled with strawberries, eggplants, sweet potatoes, rocket and cherry tomatoes.

All of these plants will produce adequately with very limited care once established. Obviously with more care they will produce even better, however it is possible to maintain a time and production balance.

Now if time is not limited, a constant cycle of seasonal fruit and vegetables is a must, along with chooks! I just love the efficiency of chooks in the backyard.

As scrap consumers, they are second only to pigs, but most urban backyards probably should not have pigs! They produce one of the best fertilisers for the garden and they provide the daily gift in the form of a glorious egg!

Initially, years ago, I also believed that they would be great at eating all the caterpillars in my garden, and whilst this is in fact true, they tend not to just eat the caterpillar, but all the leaves too!

On a final note, you will note that your homegrown produce, will yield some perfect specimens as well as those with imperfect blemishes, and some will be nibbled by pests. However, they will be full of flavour that won’t be due to microscopic bacteria from human effluent used for fertiliser in another country….and if it is, at the very least it will only be from your family…eewwh!

For the coming Autumn months, here are my recommended planting plans for sustainable backyard vegetable production.

Land for Wildlife break records With 75 new properties signing up to the program, the Sunshine Coast is home to 36% of all new sign-ups for the entire South East Queensland region last year.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the South East Queensland Land for Wildlife program had about 3,900 members - 830 on the Sunshine Coast.

“With so many dedicated landowners prepared to look after their patch of the earth, it’s no wonder council chose to invest over $50,000 Environment Levy funds in Land for Wildlife incentives in the last quarter,” Cr McKay said.

“Just over 60% of remaining bushland in our region is privately owned.

By providing landowners with the resources to manage their own land, the region as a whole, reaps the benefits.

“Council offers Land for Wildlife members free land management advice, specialist workshops and technical advice as well as access to resources such as government grants and other incentives.

“And there’s always room for more. We welcome anyone who has a property with at least 1ha of native vegetation and wants to manage part or all of their property as habitat for native plants and animals, or is interested in integrating nature conservation with other land uses.”

Local farmers on display Everybody seems very interested in eating and preparing good food these days, but if you really want to know what makes good food good - you need to find out how it's grown.

This is something you will be able to do when you head into the ‘Small Farmers Tent’ at the Maleny Show on May 29 and 30.

The ‘Small Farmers Tent’ is all about putting the spotlight on the great work our local agricultural producers are doing.

From backyard vegetable patches and kids in the chook house to sandalwood tree and free range egg farming or camel dairying, with everything in between.

You'll hear direct from the farmers about what they do, what they farm, how they farm it and how the community can support them.

Stenocarpus sinuatus Exploding into colour all over the Glasshouse region at the moment are the lovely native Firewheel Tree. Great examples can be found in Mooloolah and Landsborough’s main streets. The stunning long lasting red and orange flowers form what appears to be a wagon wheel shape. These flowers are soon replaced with woody pods which split to reveal winged seeds. This tree also has beautiful lobed glossy foliage. It is adaptable to most soil types and is very hardy. It is normally seen as a multi trunked tree approximately 5 to 8m high and 2 to 3m wide. Sport Landsborough Tennis Club

Local club heads to New Zealand San Taekwondo instructors Norm Taylor and Cameron Taylor from the Beerwah and Maleny clubs have been selected in the Queensland team for the New Zealand Open Taekwondo competition in Auckland on April 18 and 19.

Norm has been selected as the team manager and assistant coach and Cameron as the team captain. Student Leo Michael will also be travelling across the Tasman to compete and a few other San students are still considering the trip.

“This is great recognition of the dedication of our club and our commitment to providing the highest standards to our students, and it also reflects just how much our players enjoy participating in the sport,’’ Norm said.

Leo is the current Australian bronze medallist.

Cameron is the current Australian champion and he managed a silver medal at his last entry to the NZ Open in 2013.

Due to the extreme heat the 60 women who played, played under some duress. The competition was a Single Stroke played in three divisions for trophies donated by John Mellish and N Purvis, First National. The lucky winners were Division 1: Winner - Andrea Campbell with a 73 nett, Runner-up- Mavis Brimelow with a 75 nett and Gross Winner - Sonia Kenway with an 85 off the stick.

Division 2: Winner - Jasmin Parkes with a 75 nett, Runner-up - Vikki Bartel with an 81 nett and Gross Winner - Debra Carlton with a 99 off the stick.

Division 3: Winner - Elizabeth Flavelle with a 73 nett, Runner-up - Elizabeth Gemmell with a 76 nett and Gross Winner - Diana Smith on a count back with a 110 off the stick.

The Putting competition was won by Heather Henn on a count back with 28putts.

NTP’s were won by: Sharon Phillips No 2; Jasmin Parkes No 5; Gail Gundry No 16, and Mavis Brimelow No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 79 nett.
