Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley Sunshine Coast Tennis League junior finals: Unfortunately The Wanderers were hit by sickness for the final and weren’t able to match the enthusiasm of the Ballinger Hawks. They lost their games 5-0. What an effort it was to make it to the final in their first outing in the Sunshine Coast League. Both Leo and Obi played with great sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Well done boys! Friday, November 20: The Wildcats had the bye. Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Meteors. It was warm but a nice breeze came through. We had great games with two sets going to a tie-break. We didn’t get enough but it was good tennis. Score was 30-45 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Maree Hooley, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. Wednesday, November 25: It was a cooler day for tennis at Witta, where the Witta Wagtails played Maroochydore Sapphires. At the end of the day both teams had scored four sets. However, the Wagtails were pipped at the post by three games. Well done Wagtails for a great effort. Thanks to Cynthia Garvie, Cheryl Cavanagh, Sheryn Golledge and Sonia Douglas. Friday, November 27: Wildcats forfeit loss. The Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against the Legends. It was a warm day and it was a long day. We didn’t get enough games but it was very good tennis with lots of rallies and deuces. Score was 22-47 games, 1-7 sets. Team was Maree Hooley, Paula Cudmore, Aki Lepper and Annie Quarmby. That was the last match of the season. It was great to be back on the court after the long break and we are all pleased that we got through the season. Katya’s Tennis Drills Thrills and Fitness: Monday nights at 6pm. Cost is $20. Come along and join in the fun. All levels welcome. Enquiries 0437 295 501. Social tennis: Mondays 8am and Saturdays 1pm. All welcome. Court bookings 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

The Wanderers’ Obi Wynn and Leo Sanderson

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Sunday, November 22, with special rules in place where the lower handicapped player in a team wasn’t permitted to be more than three hoops ahead of the higher, Vince Carbery beat a team of Kath Smith and Val Carbery 13-8. Nick Cram and Gillian Bradley beat Donna Manning and Janelle Wilson 6–4, while on the Ted Singleton lawn (lawn two) Sarah Widin and Helen Andrews went down to Ken Barker and Wallace Roy 6–11. Thursday, November 26 wasn’t as hot as expected. Wallace and Ken played Vince and Val finishing narrowly ahead 11–9. Sarah had a win against Miggy Mackey 20-7 while on the same lawn a group consisting of Sally Adams, Janelle, Lynette Evans and Bev Sockhill played fast and loose in an unscored game with Donna as a roving coach. Afternoon tea turned into a surprise 85th birthday party for Vince with a cake smuggled in and presented. The last Sunday of November was hot. An unrecorded game was reportedly (by Wallace) 11–5 in favour of Wallace and Lynette against Donna and Janelle. Nick and Ken played a game where Nick never seemed to get a go on, eventually losing 4–15. Kath and Vince had a frustrating time against Val and Sarah who won 21-6. Despite the heat everybody enjoyed themselves and even though there was no leftover cake from Thursday the tea break was very
