Sport Judo is his game Glass House Mountains judo champion Ben Lewis (pictured) recently returned from the Queensland State Judo Championships, held on the Gold Coast, with a gold medal around his neck. Ben, a multiple state and national title holder, this year fought in a newly created category for athletes with limitations. Coming up against larger and stronger contestants, Ben used his intuitive understanding of the mechanics of judo to win on skill, utilising the strength of his opponents against them. As a member of the Maleny Judo Club, Ben has grown in competence over the years, holding a brown belt in judo and will soon take his grading towards gaining his black belt. Next on Ben’s hit list is taking out the Judo Australia National Championship to be held in June at the Gold Coast.
Easy Find Classifieds Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese What a difference a month makes! With the past few weeks of showers the golf course is in great condition. While we may have missed a few rounds due to the wet, it's certainly been worth it. And the dams are all full so it looks like a good situation going into winter. Saturday, April 6 we played a monthly medal with 20 players. The winner was Jo Malone on 73 nett followed by Hope Hannah 75 nett. NTPs: 5 - Karen Gannon, 16 - Jo Malone, 18 - (second shot) Tam Reid. Putting - Hope Hannah and Desley Neilson both 27 putts. BRDs went to 78 nett. Thursday, April 11 we played another monthly medal with only 37 ladies. The division 1 winner was Cathy Stone 76 nett on a count back from Jo Malone. The gross winner was Sonia Kenway. In division 2 the winner was Leith Barnes on 78 nett and the runner up was Lesley Eggleston on 79 nett. The gross winner was Fay Barry. In division 3 the winner was Bridget John on 80 nett from Rose Ballard on 85 nett and the gross winner was Jackie Collinson on 119. Putting - Cathy Stone 27 putts. NTPs: 2 and 5 - Jo Malone, 16 - Cindy Godfrey and 18 - (second shot) Mavis Brimelow. BRD went to 82 nett.
The Range Croquet Club
Contributed by Ken Barker The new sail provided by the Rotary Club proved a great success, arriving just in time for the Sunshine Coast Regional Championships held at our lawns last Tuesday and Wednesday. It was and will be greatly appreciated by the players and visitors. There was a lot of fun on the lawns on Sunday, April 6. Conditions were perfect as autumn appears to have arrived. On lawn two Nick Cram and Ken Barker fought to a virtual draw with Ken coming out slightly ahead 14–13. Helen Andrews and Frances Harper played well on the same lawn to defeat Sarah Widin and Stuart Craig 12–0. Meanwhile on lawn one Garry and Brenda Winter played Wallace Roy in a six-ball game of golf where the final scores ended up at 1, 4 and 7 in that order. Well done Wallace. At the regional championships, second division association championships were held on our lawns with three of our players competing. Vince Carbery, Nick and Ken competed with some good games. Nick pegged out against Theo Kleiberg. However, the championship was won by Bill Habner from Noosa in a very good final against George Oliver from Coolum 26-16. It was the best game of the tournament and could have gone either way. Many thanks to Sarah Widin and Wallace Roy for their work preparing the grounds beforehand and to all of those people who came down and helped in the clubhouse and kitchen for the event. Thanks also to Val Carbery who refereed throughout and to Donna Manning who was instrumental in the organisation of the tournament and who refereed on Tuesday. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Playing times have now reverted to the earlier start time of 1pm for games to begin at 1.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555 or check the website https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. 44
